There is nothing like the bond that Girl Scout Summer Camp brings. Every year, former Girl Scout counselors from Camp Wakatomika gather for a reunion at the camp’s Letz Lodge. These women have been gathering for almost 40 years. Professors, researchers, engineers, beauticians, and landscapers are a few of the career roles these women chose. Ranging in age from 67 to 79, they are also mothers and grandmothers. These women have followed each other’s careers and growth of families throughout the years and come back to camp annually, traveling from as far as Arizona, Vermont, Canada and of course, the local gals from Ohio.

Alumnae Spotlight: Jan Hamann
Girl Scout Alumna and GSOH Alumnae Advisory Committee founding member, Jan Hamann, says that “Girl Scouting is in her blood”. Her mother, Betty Johnston, was a scout for over 50 years. In her younger days, Jan was a Brownie, Junior, Cadette and Senior scout and served on the Senior Planning Board for the Seal of Ohio Council. The summers of her college years were spent at Camp Ken-Jockety, first as a camp counselor and then as the assistant cook in the camp dining hall. She met her husband, Ed, at Camp Ken-Jockety when he worked there one summer as a grounds keeper and handyman. Ed also remained active in Girl Scouts during the years that Jan and her life-long friend, Sherri Bishop served as leaders for their daughters’ troop from Daisies through Seniors. Camping trips to Michigan and the 1996 Atlanta Olympics are among their favorite shared Girl Scout memories. Jan retired from Westerville City Schools in 2012 where she taught for 32 years. She currently volunteers as an ESL instructor for the Columbus Literacy Council and serves in several leadership positions as a member of Church of the Master United Methodist. She continues to use her Girl Scout skills during travel adventures and time spent in the outdoors with family and friends. Like her mother, she plans to always remain active in Girl Scouting.

We have a great story and we’re sharing it! Check us out on social media and our blog! gsoh.org/beyondthebadge 2
Ruth Lucille Shafer Crumrine was an active volunteer and Girl Scout leader for Ashland Girl Scout Troop 1. She and her husband, John Crumrine, were long time supporters of the Girl Scouts. Prior to their death, Ruth and her husband John established the John S. and Ruth L. Crumrine Charitable Remainder Trust designating a percentage of the funds to be left to the Girl Scouts of Ohio’s Heartland. By including GSOH in their estate plans, the Crumrines are making a difference in the future of Girl Scouting here in Central Ohio. For more information about how you can support GSOH through your estate plans, contact Jennifer Blank, jblank@gsoh.org. GIRL SCOUTS OF OHIO’S HEARTLAND
WHERE ARE THEY NOW?
Hillary celebrating graduation from The Ohio State University
Hillary Tate My name is Hillary Tate. I am a 15 year Girl Scout veteran. I was a member of the Three Rivers Council in Cincinnati for 11 years, where I completed my Bronze, Silver, and Gold Awards. In 2010, I transferred to Girl Scouts of Ohio’s Heartland, and became a Lunch Bunch leader at a Columbus inner city school, was a program facilitator for three summers, and was a program intern for council. I recently graduated from The Ohio State University with a BS in Architecture and minors in City and Regional Planning and German. For the summer of 2015, I accepted an internship in Orlando, Florida, working for FINFROCK DMC, a design, manufacturing, and construction company specializing in precast concrete. In August, I accepted a full-time offer to be an assistant conceptual designer. I build 3-D models, create schematic plans, and assist the conceptual designers in their work.
As part of everyone’s ‘initiation’ into the company, I spent half of the summer in the company’s manufacturing plant, spending long days in the Florida heat as part of the Quality Control team. I learned the different product types, how work moves from conceptual design to architecture, engineering, to creation, and then to construction. One of my favorite parts was talking my way into cleaning the giant concrete mixers with a small jackhammer. Girl Scouts has always been my passion and another part of my family, and it is my turn to give back. I joined the Citrus Council volunteers shortly after relocating, and I will be a new leader coming this fall.
