from the heart of Spring 2018
Girl Scouting builds girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place. From the Heart of GSOH is our newly designed Girl Scouts of Ohio’s Heartland newsletter! Filled with Girl Scout news, features and events, From the Heart will keep you up-to-date on all things Girl Scouts and share stories of impact in our community.
Celebrating Girls in Real Life In a room filled with alumni, volunteers, community leaders, and friends, we came together to support girls and get a taste of what they learn with Girl Scouts. (And a taste of maple syrup tapped by Girl Scouts at Camp Ken-Jockety!) November 9, 2017 was the third annual Girls in Real Life, where we heard from inspiring G.I.R.L.s (Go-Getter, Innovator, Risk-Taker, Leader)™ in our community that dream big and change the world – G.I.R.L.s like Board Member Shakila Ali and Chief Creative Officer of Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams Jeni Britton Bauer. Thanks to the generosity of our attendees and sponsors, we raised more than $40,000. These funds will provide outreach programming to underserved girls so that they can have meaningful Girl Scout experiences in a girl-centric, girl-led environment. These programs provide every girl a chance to practice a lifetime of leadership, adventure, and success. At Girl Scouts, we are proud to help every girl access her inner G.I.R.L. and help her grow in courage, confidence, and character. Thank you for joining us in our mission.
Meet
Brontë Johnson
Gold Award Girl Scout
A Junior at Gahanna Lincoln High School, Brontë puts the “L” in G.I.R.L. as a leader. She’s involved in varsity golf, varsity speech and debate, Chinese National Honors Society, and Multicultural Club as vice president, all while working parttime and maintaining her GPA. And Brontë is a shining example of a Girl Scout. She credits much of her success to experiences that she had with Girl Scouts – like coding camp and horseback riding – since her days as a Daisy. “I’m so blessed to have opportunities like these,” Brontë said. “I owe so much to the organization.” For her Gold Award project, Brontë built an app dedicated to making health and wellness fun. Her goal was to engage youth in exercise and healthy eating as an alternative to constant social media usage. She presented her Healthy Living app at a local event, sharing the link for people to download, and it was a huge success! Brontë shared the impact Girl Scouts has had on her life at Girls in Real Life, from her Gold Award project to where she’s going next. We’re so glad to be a part of Brontë’s leadership journey – we know that she will change the world!
