Welcome to myGSOH We’ve made it easy for you to find programs in your favorite category by adding icons to each program description. Get ready to start exploring and pick your favorite activities!

ARTS & HUMANITIES

Through our Arts & Humanities programs, girls develop a strong sense of self and their potential, and become more confident leaders who want to make the world a better place. With these programs, girls have the chance to participate in dance classes, visit the Ohio Statehouse, and even explore a museum!

HEALTH & WELLNESS

Our Health & Wellness programs teach girls the importance of staying active and making healthy choices, all while having a ton of fun! Girls can learn from local athletes, complete physically challenging obstacles at our annual Mad Mud Challenge, and learn how to care for others with our first aid and Safe Sitter programs.

LEADERSHIP, ADVOCACY, & ENGAGEMENT

We teach girls to take action: for themselves, their communities, and their world. By giving them different perspectives and opportunities to make a difference, we inspire girls to give back and share the good! Our programs offer a wide variety of volunteer events for girls to truly make a difference in the world. New this year are two leadership retreats – Ignite and Spark, where girls will learn to raise their voices to affect the changes they’re passionate about.

OUTDOOR EDUCATION

Experiencing the outdoors is a great way for girls to develop a deep appreciation for nature, build skills, and see the Earth as their home. Whether she wants to hike a mountain, camp under the stars, or learn how to horseback ride, our programs will give her the opportunity to gain new outdoor experiences!

STEM

Girls receive hands-on experiences in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math with fun activities that encourage girls to explore their interests in STEM careers. Through aviation adventures, techie camp, and computer coding classes, girls’ curiosity will be sparked to start exploring their STEM career goals. 4 my G S O H

1 8 my G S O H

Girls on the Go! Take a road trip with your Girl Scout sisters this year! Try visiting a new GSOH camp, or a site in a neighboring county. While you’re in the car, fight boredom with one of these car games! 20 Questions

The first player thinks of a person, place, or thing. Everyone else takes turns asking yes or no questions. After each answer, the person who asked the question gets one guess. Play continues until a player guesses correctly.

The Alphabet Game

Each player looks for letters of the alphabet that appear on signs or license plates. The object of the game is to point out all the letters of the alphabet in order, from A to Z. The first person to spot the entire alphabet wins!

The Animal Game

One person names an animal. Then each person in order has to name another animal (no repeats) that starts with the last letter of the previous animal named. There are no winners or losers in this game!

Car Colors

Choose a time limit (like 15 minutes) and have each person guess how many cars of a certain color will be spotted during that time. The closest guesser wins!

Categories

Choose a topic, such as cereals, television shows, animals, etc. Then each person names something new within that category. Play continues until someone can’t think of an item (no repeating). For an added challenge, try to list things in alphabetical order!

Cheese Please

Choose one person to be “it.” That person covers her eyes. Secretly pick another person to say the words, “Cheese please,” in a way that will disguise the person’s voice. The person who is “it” has to guess the person who said, “Cheese please.” If the player gets it wrong, another person has a turn.

I’m Going on a Picnic

This is an alphabet-based memory game. The first player says, “I’m going on a picnic and I’m bringing …” followed by something that begins with the letter A, such as ants. The second player repeats what the first person said, but adds something that begins with the letter B, such as bananas. Continue with C, D, E, and the rest of the alphabet. The last player to be able to list all the items wins!

Grandma’s Cat

This is another alphabet-based game centered on a sentence in which only two words change. To play, start with the letter “A” the first player might say, “Grandma’s cat is an awesome cat named Amy.” The second player replaces the two underlined words with others starting with A such as, “Grandma’s cat is an adorable cat named Albert.” If a player can’t think of a new word, or if she repeats a word, she is out. The play continues with B, C, D, and so on until there is one remaining player.

Laugh a Lot

Choose one person to keep a straight face. The rest of the players choose a silly answer for the player to use (for example, “my shoe.”) Then, players take turns asking questions like, “What do you brush your hair with?” or “What is your favorite snack?” The player keeping the straight face has to answer with “my shoe,” while trying to keep a straight face. If the person laughs, play passes to someone else and a new phrase is created.

Radio Game

Hit the “scan” button on your radio until it stops on a song. The first person to guess the artist or title of the song wins!

The Silent Game

Who can stay quiet the longest? If a player makes any noise at all, they are out. The last person who hasn’t made any noise wins!

Story Telling

One person starts a story with a single sentence. Then the next person adds a sentence. Continue until you build a complete story! For an added challenge, try making all the lines rhyme. Or, try composing a story where each person just adds a single word!

Who’s Next Door?

If you are in heavy traffic, try making up stories about the people in the car nearby. What are their names? Where do they work? What are their hobbies? etc.

Travel with Girl Scouts

There’s a whole world to explore!

Visit www.gsoh.org/for-girls/travel to learn about the troop travel progression and download forms and travel planning guides.

Whether you travel around the block or around the world, some of the most memorable moments in a Girl Scout’s life happen while taking trips! Plus, traveling offers tons of ways for girls to develop leadership skills and learn how to plan and take trips.

GETAWAYS

DESTINATIONS

Getaways are short-term travel opportunities for Girl Scout troops or groups. Getaways are a great gateway to Level 4 troop travel. Once the girls in the troop decide to register for a Getaway, often the only thing left to plan are the travel arrangements!

Girl Scout destinations are trips designed for individual Girl Scouts from across the globe. About 30 different destinations are offered each year for girls in grades 6-12. There are tons of destinations to choose from, covering topics like STEM, the outdoors, the arts, service, and even apprenticeships!

Visit forgirls.girlscouts.org/ travel/take-a-trip/getaways to check out all of the Getaways offered, including visits to Alaska, California, Cape Cod, New York City, and so much more!

Fa l l/ W i n t e r 2 0 1 5

To register for a destination, girls must complete an application, write a short essay, and provide two references. Each fall, GSOH offers informational destinations webinars for girls and parents. See pages 37 and 46 for details and visit forgirls.girlscouts.org/ travel/take-a-trip/destinations/ to explore!

Program Aide Opportunities What is a Program Aide? Program Aides are Cadette assistants who help younger girls in exciting Girl Scout programs. To become a Program Aide you must complete the following three steps in this order:

1

Earn a Leader in Action award.

2

Attend a council program aide training or check out our program aide workshop kit to do the training with your troop or service unit.

3

Volunteer at six program sessions (troop, service unit, or council programs).

All of the volunteer opportunities in the Cadette section count toward your six program sessions required to earn your PA award. If you’re not sure if being a PA is something you want to pursue, why not come and volunteer at one of these events to get a feel for it? (Volunteer sessions before taking the PA training don’t count toward the six required sessions.)

PROGRAM AIDE TRAINING Do you have what it takes to help guide younger girls through all the fun and excitement that Girl Scouting has to offer? As a Program Aide, you’ll be able to assist with troop meetings, service unit events, and council programs. At this training, you’ll define your own leadership style, learn about age level characteristics of younger girls, and practice teaching. You’ll leave prepared to deliver fun and engaging programs to younger girls. Complete six direct service sessions with younger girls to complete the requirements of earning your Program Aide Award. Remember to pack a lunch. Prerequisite: Before attending a Program Aide training, you must first earn a Cadette Leader in Action Award.

Teen Volunteer Opportunities (CIT/VIT/APL)

Volunteering at a GSOH program is a great way to give back, share your passion for Girl Scouting, and sharpen your leadership skills. Haven’t earned your CIT, VIT, or APL award? That’s okay, you can still volunteer to help out! You just might like it so much that you’ll want to earn one of these prominent awards.

WHAT IS A CIT?

A Counselor-in-Training is a high school girl who mentors younger girls in a camp setting. CIT1 and CIT2 awards are earned by participating in a resident camp leadership training program. Look for more info in the camp guide that you’ll receive in January!

WHAT IS A VIT?

A Volunteer-in-Training is a girl in grades 10-12 who mentors girls outside of the camp experience. To earn the VIT award, girls must attend a council VIT training course and implement a thoughtful program that lasts four or more sessions with the same girls.

WHAT IS AN APL?

An Advance Program Aide Leader is a day camp assistant who develops and leads specialty areas based on her specific skills and interests. APLs have progressed through several summers of day camp Program Aide training.

VOLUNTEER IN TRAINING OVERNIGHT Do you want to mentor a Girl Scout Daisy, Brownie, Junior, or Cadette group outside of the camp experience? This training will give you the skills necessary to design purposeful programs, support in seeking an adult mentor, and practice making the most of your unique leadership style. As a VIT, you’ll work with an adult mentor to create and implement a thoughtful program based on a Journey or badges. Your VIT project should last three to six months and could include working with a troop, conducting service unit events, or working on your own or as part of a teen team to run council programs. Dinner and breakfast will be provided. Prerequisite: You must have completed ninth grade to earn your VIT award.
