Planning on traveling to a nearby city or state this summer? Think about visiting a sister Girl Scout Council!

There are many councils near our own. If you’re planning a visit to another council, have an adult help you look up the office hours of the council headquarters and their council store; you and an adult might also want to call the council headquarters to get important information to plan your visit. You might even be able to collect council patches from the stores you visit!

Traveling farther away this summer? Be sure to check out your Girl’s Guide to Girl Scouting “Handbook” section to see a map of all the councils in the U.S.

Write in! We want to hear about your Girl Scout adventures! Send us photos with captions, and you might see yourself on our GSOH Facebook page or blog! Email your summer travel pics to MarComm@gsoh.org

RoAD TRiP bINgO! Turn your next long car trip into a game! Create your own bingo card to take with you in the car and play Road Trip Bingo. 1. Draw a grid on paper using the ruler and an adult’s help, if needed. Make six lines going up and down and six lines going side to side. Like this:

You’ll need: A blank piece of paper Pencil Ruler Crayons, colored pencils or markers

2. In each box on your grid, draw or write the name of something you can see while you’re in the car. This could be a bird, a STOP sign, a license plate from another state, or a certain fast food restaurant. If you’re feeling creative, add color to your pictures or decorate your paper. Don’t forget to add the free space in the middle! 3. When you’re in the car, look out the window and mark off each square as you see the item in the square. The first person to get five squares in a row up and down, side to side, or diagonally, yells, ”Bingo!” and wins!

You can fill out lots of different cards or the same one a few times for new games. Remember, if you’re playing with someone else, their card should be different from yours!

on the Go!

Traveling in the summer is a great way to practice your skills of observation and become a Field Scientist! Field Scientists study plants, animals, rocks, and other natural things in the field (where they are found in nature). Take a note book with you and create your own field journal by writing down and drawing plants and animals that you see. What color is it? Where did you find it? If you’re far from home, see if you can find bugs, birds, or other things that don’t live in your home state. You can make journal entries in the city, in the woods, at the beach, or anywhere you find plants or animals!

You can complete Step 3 of the Bugs badge while writin g in your Field Journ al! STEP 3: Wa tch Look for thre three bugs. e different bugs in your area. SWAPS, a Girl Scout tradition, is an acronym for Special Whatchamacallits Affectionately Pinned Somewhere. Girl Scouts often trade SWAPS as a symbol of sisterhood with other Girl Scouts they meet when traveling. SWAPS can also be called potlatches and hatpins. As you travel this summer, either as a troop or individually, what creative SWAPS could you make and give to represent your troop, or where you’re from?

How to make a Passport SWAP:

3

Glue or staple the white pages into the blue cover.

4

Write “Passport” on the front cover (or you can layer another piece of paper and glue it to the blue cover). For an added touch, create your own seal for yourself or your troop! (The U.S. Passport uses an eagle as a seal.)

Attach a safety pin with glue or by poking a hole in the cover and threading string through and you’re done!

Cut four to five slightly smaller rectangles of white paper, and fold them to fit inside. These will be the pages of your passport.

other Girl Scouts you meet on your travels. Include an instruction page at the beginning that tells other girls what information the passport collects (their name, troop number, where they’re from, and where they got the SWAP) and to pass the SWAP along to other girls they meet on their travels!

Use it to track the places you visit with your Girl Scout troop by making a page for each place you visit together.

Girl Scout Destinations are the ultimate adventure for girls ages 11 and older!

Choose from lots of different trips—from surfing camp on the east coast and breathtaking hikes out west, to the crazy-cool wonder of new cultures abroad! Make new friends—travel with girls from all over the country!

Getting started is easy: 1. Visit girlscouts.org/destinations. Destinations will be updated in September for 2017 but you can get ideas now to start planning and saving! 2. Once 2017 trips are posted, choose up to four that spark your WOW. 3. Complete the application process and turn it in to GSOH by the deadline—November 2016. 4. Go on your amazing trip! 5. Some of the most memorable moments in a Girl Scout’s life happen while taking trips. Travel also provides many opportunities for girls to develop leadership skills and enhance their worldview. Everything girls do in Girl Scouting is based on the Girl Scout Leadership Experience, and Girl Scout trips are no different. From budgeting to traveling, girls learn valuable life skills, connect with their troop, and discover new things about themselves and the world. In your role as a supportive troop leader, you can shape girls’ adventures through girl-led planning and preparation, as well as cooperative learning activities. By doing this, you are helping to ensure that girls will have a meaningful and fun experience.

Reminders and Tips: Plan ahead! Effectively and safely planning a troop trip can take more time than expected, especially if you are used to traveling alone or as a family. Start small. Thinking about taking your girls to Europe as Ambassadors? Try a trip to Chicago as Seniors, or how about taking your Cadettes to Niagara Falls? You could even start with a weekend trip to one of GSOH’s camps. Travel readiness is a huge part of the travel process, and will ensure your trip is a success! Define the purpose of your trip. How are you incorporating the GSLE? Dot your i’s and cross your t’s! If you’re taking a quick trip within our region, submit a Level 3 Trip Application to your Service Unit. If you’re leaving the state and/or traveling for more than two nights, submit a Level 4/5 Trip Application to your Service Unit and to Council. Trip applications help us ensure that your trip has been planned well and that we know where you in case of emergency. To have your trip approved as a Girl Scout event, GSOH must receive and approve your trip application. Applications are available on our website at gsoh.org.

Writing a Resume FOR TEENS

1

Looking for a summer job or applying for college scholarships that require a resume? We’ve got you covered with some resume-writing tips!

Start with a short summary. Start with your name and contact information at the top. Be sure to include a phone number and email that you check often. Responsiveness is critical to employers and colleges. Under your introductory information, create a three-line paragraph (Elevator Pitch) summarizing your skills and intentions. Simply state what you’d like to do, and list a few reasons why you’ll be great at it.

Consider your strengths. When applying to jobs and scholarships, think about your strengths and skills. These may come from jobs, volunteering experiences, or extracurricular activities. For example, you might have great customer service skills from working at a retail store or restaurant, or excellent public speaking skills from leadership roles in school clubs.

3

Use a resume template. This is a great starting point to create your own resume. Add your information to the template and personalize it with your own work experiences, skills, and abilities.

List experience. This includes work history and activities. List the employer, dates of employment, your position, and job functions. Since most high school students have limited work experience, it’s important to include volunteer and extracurricular activities. These experiences demonstrate your character, work ethics, skills, and personality.

5

2

4

Include resume keywords. Your resume should include keywords mentioned in the job description. This will increase the chances of your resume matching available positions.

Emphasize your grades and study skills. If you’re earning straight A’s and involved in extracurricular activities, emphasize this in your “Education” section. If you don’t have much work experience, good grades and strong study skills demonstrate work ethic and dedication.

7

6

Leverage your skills. Use the “Skills” section to highlight skills that may be valuable to your employer. Beyond your lifeguarding, stockroom management, or basic childcare skills, include proficiency with software platforms like Microsoft Office, athletic accomplishments, language skills, and extracurricular achievements.

Write well. Your resume should contain absolutely no typos. Your phrases should be clear and concise. Before submitting your resume, ask a parent, teacher, or other adult to review it.

COLLEGE VISIT TIPS

Is college on the horizon? From writing admission essays to planning campus visits, this is an exciting, yet nerve-racking, time for high school students! To help you prepare for your upcoming college visits, keep these tips from College Board in mind. College Board is a not-for-profit that connects students to college success and opportunity. You can see more tips and find the resources mentioned at www.collegeboard.org.

Arrange a Visit

What to Expect

Colleges have admission offices that can help you plan your visit. Your high school may organize group tours of nearby colleges, or you can plan your own informal visit to a college campus.

Campus visits can range from a quick hour tour to an overnight stay. Be sure you know the length of the visit before you go. Most campus visits include:

• Contact the college admission office to get details and make a reservation. You can find information on the college’s website. • Talk to your counselor about joining an organized tour of campuses. You might not get to visit otherwise! • Schedule time to be on your own. Walk around the public areas of the college and don't be shy about asking students questions.

Get Ready

• An information session: An admission representative talks to you or your group about the college before the campus tour. • A campus tour: These are typically led by current students. You’ll see the main parts of the campus and have a chance to ask questions.

Be a college student for the day!

At many colleges, you can also arrange to attend a class, club meeting or sports events; meet with a professor; eat in a dining hall; or spend the night in a dorm.

Before your visit, do some research: • Explore the college’s official website and review any materials the college has sent you. This will help you form questions specific to that college. • Make a list of questions to ask both staff and students. You can use the Campus Visit Checklist as a starting point. When you’re road-tripping this summer, your cell phone can come in handy for many things. For instance, you can use GPS technology so you don’t get lost or go on a geocaching adventure. You can use the camera on your phone to capture fun memories or listen to audiobooks on long-distance car rides. However, don’t forget to look out the window and live in the moment! Before you hashtag your way across the U.S., take time to enjoy the world around you. We are often so enthralled with the social media world that we miss the world right in front of us. During your travels, set aside time each day to be cell phone free. Just because you didn’t get a picture of a fun experience for your Facebook timeline doesn’t mean it didn’t happen. Some of the best moments are the ones that we don’t capture with our cameras, but are remembered in our minds forever! Spring /Summer 2016
