America’s Worst Winter: 1888
The Blizzard of 1888 was the first photographed natural disaster in U.S. history. Below are actual pictures from the blizzard.
During the winter of 1888, the western U.S. recorded some of its all-time coldest temperatures, and the East Coast experienced the snowiest and most unusual winter storm in U.S. history. In January, the coldest temperatures included –42ºF in Missoula, Montana, -36ºF in Green Bay, Wisconsin, and –56.8ºF in Poplar River, Montana. (To compare, the lowest temperature ever recorded in Columbus was –22ºF in 1994.) In the 1880s, weather stations in the West and the Rocky Mountains were still few and far between, so it is possible that there were even colder temperatures experienced but not recorded. In March, the temperature was much warmer on the East Coast. New York City recorded a temperature of 42ºF at noon on March 11. That’s too warm for snow to fall! In fact, it rained all night until the temperature hit freezing around 1 a.m. That’s when the blizzard started. The wind picked up and blew the snow around as it fell, causing drifts as big as 40 feet in some places. By 8 a.m. the city had stopped. Telegraph lines went down as poles snapped in the wind, and trains were stopped by heavy snow. The biggest snowfall was recorded at Saratoga Springs, New York at 58 inches! That is probably taller than you! Can you imagine that much snow?

Staying Warm When it’s COLD outside, how do you keep warm? Do you like to stay inside, put on lots of extra clothes, or go on a trip to a warmer place? Frozen Treats
Make it!
There are so many fun things to do in the snow! Here’s one more way to enjoy the winter weather—Snow Cream! You can use freshly fallen snow (any time after the first snow of the season) to make a yummy treat by following this recipe: 1. When the snow starts to fall, place a large bowl outside. 2. When the bowl is full, add sugar a tablespoon at a time and vanilla a teaspoon at a time until the mixture tastes sweet and flavorful. 3. Add milk slowly until you reach the desired consistency. 4. Enjoy your Snow Cream!

at the A Sneek Peek … head! Girl Scout fun a If you’re in fifth grade, then this spring and summer you’ll be getting ready to bridge to Girl Scout Cadettes! Being a Girl Scout Junior is super fun, but just wait until you read about all the adventures that lie ahead as a Girl Scout Cadette … Teen Camporee is a perfect example. This past October, we held this annual event for the fourth time. This year, the theme was “Mystical Mythology,” which drew in over 100 Girl Scout Cadettes, Seniors, and Ambassadors who love mythology and the Percy Jackson books. Girls spent the weekend at Camp Wakatomika in Utica, and got to try out tons of activities like archery, pottery, geocaching, weaving, improv acting, myth writing, sculpting with polymer clay, and even creating mystical creatures out of gourds! Plus, we had a campfire, lots of singing, and our very own version of T.A.G. Next year’s theme is “Childhood Memories.” We can’t share too many details about the fun we have planned (surprises are fun!), but if you’re about to be come a Girl Scout Cadette, you should definitely check it out on CORA. Stay tuned to the spring/summer issue of myGSOH for another peek at being a Girl Scout Cadette!
Beautiful & Bright Bronze Awards! Have you recently earned your Girl Scout Bronze Award? Send us a paragraph and some photos, and we’ll feature a few of the brightest Bronze Award projects in the spring/summer issue of myGSOH! Send your name, photos, and a brief paragraph about your project to program@gsoh.org or Girl Scouts of Ohio’s Heartland, ATTN: Program Department 1700 WaterMark Drive Columbus, OH 43215.
My Girl Scout Experience: Badges and Beyond! When I was a Girl Scouts, I wanted nothing more than a highly decorated sash! I love the way they looked, and I loved what they meant to me. I spent loads of time going through badge books figuring out what I had to do for this badge or that one. I rushed through many of the projects, just so I could earn that little piece of embroidered fabric! What I learned was, although I earned many badges, I remember very little about all the cool things I should have learned. Sometimes, we get so excited about the awards we don’t stop to enjoy what we are doing! Take pride in earning your badges. And enjoy each moment so you will remember something special about each one! - Chris Rehs-Dupin
We can’t wait to share your hard work with other Girl Scout Juniors!

Quiz: Can you tell a First-Class Friend from a Bad Buddy? Answers. See quiz on page 9.
1) First-class friend. It sounds like she's trying to help but she doesn't know how. She's probably a good friend, but doesn’t know the best way to help you. Tell her you appreciate her help but that other things might be more helpful. Together, brainstorm other positive ways she can support you. 2) First-class friend. Friends have to cancel sometimes. It doesn't mean they are ditching you. She gave you a good reason, so don't be too upset. But if she repeatedly lets you down, that's not cool. If your friend often cancels, talk about it. Tell her it bothers you and see if things get better. If not, maybe it's time to hang out with other friends. 3) Bad Buddy. It doesn't seem like this is something a good friend would do. Good-natured teasing is okay, but not if you’re always the punch line. Good friends support you. They don't make fun of you or want to make you feel bad. But, there's a chance your friend doesn't know how you feel. Tell him it hurts your feelings and see if he changes. If he doesn't change, you don't want a friend like that. Find people who make you feel good about yourself. 4) Tough Call! While it may be a little strange, be flattered. You have great taste and your friend noticed! People have the right to buy and wear whatever they want. But if it bothers you, talk to her about it. Why not try coordinating so you wear the shirt on different days, or plan a twin day! 5) Bad Buddy. It's important to trust your friends, and it sure seems like you can't trust this one. But before you write off your friend completely, talk to her. Tell her what she did wasn't cool and see what she has to say. Maybe there was a misunderstanding, so give her a chance to explain. If there's no good reason, find truer friends to hang out with. 6) Tough call! Friends tell each other how they feel but they do it in ways that help, not hurt. When anger strikes, it can be easy to say nasty things you don't mean. Before you snap, take time to cool off, and then have a calm conversation. Starting with "I" instead of "you" is less emotional. Say things like, "I get my feelings hurt when…" It's a good way to talk things through and stay friends. 7) First-class friend. It's important to keep a friend's trust. But if your friend could get hurt, don't keep his secret. You're not betraying his trust; you're being a good friend. Speak up. Tell someone you trust—a parent, counselor, or teacher— who can help. If your friend gets mad or confronts you later let him know you did it because you care about him. 8) Tough call! It all depends on why you're telling her. A good friend will tell the truth, but with the best of intentions. If your friend's feelings get hurt easily, maybe keep your opinion to yourself unless she asks for it. Then, be honest, but nice. Offer a solution, too. Suggest she wear something you know she looks great in, like a different pair of jeans or a great top with her new jeans.

Rhyan Klima, one of our very own Girl Scout Council Delegates, was able to put her “dreams into action” during the inaugural GO LEAD Academy this summer, our new five-day leadership experience that allowed girls to learn new skills and pursue their passion for community service. Her passionate experiences lead her to write the following article. Logical in all she does in finding the most efficient and suit fitting solutions to problems. Effective worker, leader, advice giver, and in the many other vast roles she holds. Advocate in what she believes; standing up and holding her ground for her values and truths. Determined to be a catalyst of change, a difference in her community, country and world. She is all these components, working in all directions to make herself a light to others to glimpse and infatuate with. Her heart of passion, her heart of amore, giving to others love and adore. Her mind at work, bursting at the seams, unable to contain all the dreams. Her hands restless, making something anew, molding a future for me and you. Who is this girl? Where has she been and where does she head? The story unfolds as to where she’s lead, for this girl a help to need, is of course the result of Go Lead. Go Lead Academy, casted as “a five-day leadership experience for high school girls created by Girl Scouts of Ohio’s Heartland and Otterbein University,” is more than an experience, a reverie more accurately holds it to its true name. A reverie where young women come to learn more about themselves and their true destiny; and even to those still searching for their passion, a light to seek out and nurture its brightness. And of these young women, I had the beyond fortunate opportunity to be among them. If asked what Go Lead was and what it encompassed, my response would be short, sweet and simple in the two worded answer: action and passion. Even at the start of day one, after the check-in and the many warm greetings, the whole of the Go Lead individuals, including myself of course, were introduced to the wonders and beauties of networking and branding. Not even a night there, and I was already well educated and definitely intrigued with what the rest of the week would offer me. The week ahead, of course, did not disappoint between meeting with today’s female leaders, learning about how a singular dream can be turned into a sensation, and how to follow your passion, it was definitely an action packed week. And let’s not forget optional morning Zumba activities, a movie night, late night snack chats and learning self-defense. Action indeed there was, and with action of course there was the same equivalence of passion! Passion. A strange word at most, but when at Go Lead it is everything; from meeting monumental female leaders in today’s society that shared their humble beginnings, to encouraging and finding the same unique will and humble beginnings within ourselves. Towards the start of the week, the participants of Go Lead were greatly blessed to meet with and learn the styles and stories of women who had a vision and followed it. Then with their help and the most gracious help of the Otterbein University, Girl Scouts of Ohio’s Heartland, and the many appreciated sponsors, the young women of Go Lead were able to put our own dreams into action. What an Opportunity! For some it was education, others health and nutrition, and yet for others public safety and regulations. And in all the hard work, strength, team building, and discovering our dreams could finally come to fruition. So who is this girl? This girl is me, and this girl could be you. This girl is a leader, a light and dream to those around her. She sees the future and her passion that she intends to use to make a change, her change, her difference, and it is to only and for all to Go Lead! –Rhyan E. Klima, August, 2014 8

Study this paragraph and all things in it. What is vitally wrong with it? Actually, nothing in it is wrong, but you must admit that it is most unusual. Don't just zip through it quickly, but study it scrupulously. With luck you should spot what is so particular about it and all words found in it. Can you say what it is? Tax your brains and try again. Don't miss a word or a symbol. It isn't all that difficult?
