MY GIRL SCOUT OPPORTUNITY HANDBOOK
GSOH gets growing!
What do Girl Scouts do? Girl Scouts go on field trips, explore their communities, and learn about nature, science, and the arts. They work together in groups or on their own, earn badges and awards, and take part in special projects that help other people. There are many ways for you to be involved in Girl Scouts. The first step is simply choosing activities based on your interests. You can create your own journey filled with wonderful adventures! We need more volunteers, members, cookie buyers, and donations to continue building girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place. Visit www.gsoh. org to volunteer or donate. Or call 614-487-8101 for more information.
Troop membership is a wonderful setting for your Girl Scout experience. Whether in a troop, or as an individually registered member, you have lots of fun ways to participate in Girl Scouts. Attend an outdoor-themed activity at one of our camps, or resident camp or day camp in the summer, and experience the wonders of nature. Perhaps you like events where you meet other girls, learn new things, and have a great time. Come on your own or with a friend to several of our cool events. Want a bit more involvement? A series is a great way to explore a topic that interests you without committing to a full year of meetings. Do you like to travel? You can take local trips, travel somewhere in the U.S., or venture around the world. Traveling with other Girl Scouts makes the experience even more awesome! Interact online with girls and volunteers in a safe, secure environment. Want to give service and use your leadership skills? This symbol marks a chance to do just that. This symbol lets you know you'll need a troop leader, parent, or guardian to participate.

GSOH Gets Growing!
If you visited one of our camps recently, you might have noticed that we have been working on some big projects. In 2013, we finished construction on the wetland boardwalk and education shelter at Camp Ken-Jockety. We’re also creating a natural play space (which is a cool way to say a playground built out of nature!). Camp Molly Lauman got a brand new amphitheater, composting toilets, and a challenge course. But most excitingly, both Camp Molly Lauman and Camp K-J started to get-their-grow-on by adding raised bed gardens to grow some delicious fruits and veggies.
The gardens didn’t just come out of nowhere – a lot of careful planning went into them. In 2012, Girl Scouts of Ohio’s Heartland paired up with a nearby organization called Local Matters. Local Matters teaches people how to choose healthier foods that are grown close to home, or even to grow their own. This awesome group helped us brainstorm how we wanted our gardens to look and to plan action-packed programs for Girl Scouts, like you.
garden to look unique and interesting, but also grow a lot of food, so we decided that we would place half of our raised beds in a flower shape in the center of the garden and put the other half closer together near the greenhouse. At Camp Molly Lauman, we decided to build three very long beds that would allow gardeners to reach all of the soil easily and grow plenty of food for the salad bar. Since we were growing food for the salad bar, guess where we put the garden? Did you guess near the dining hall? Well…you would be right! Once we had our plans drawn out, we had to prepare the sites for the new beds. At Camp K-J, we removed a few small trees. Our camp rangers built fences around both gardens to keep deer and rabbits from eating all of our plants.
From the get-go, we knew our gardens would be chockfull of food, but each camp had special ideas for its own unique garden. Most girls who come to Camp K-J come out for just a few hours, or for day camp. Since Then came the time to build the programs are offered all yearbeds. Camp Work Day in April was round, we knew the gardens at the perfect time for this project. K-J could have plants growing Dozens of Girl Scouts and their spring through fall, and we family members came to camp could even grow plants from to help. Girls helped to screw the seed. We knew we wanted boards together to make the beds, the brand new veggie patch filled them with soil and compost, to be planted near the Elam and even planted our first seeds! Center, because that’s where We had a few challenges getting most of our programs take Gardens at Camp Ken-Jockety started. We were able to buy very place. K-J also already had high-quality soil for the Camp a greenhouse, but it wasn’t yet in tip-top shape and Ken-Jockety garden, with lots of organic compost wasn’t up to doing the work our garden needed. to feed our new plants and help them grow strong. Down at Camp Molly Lauman, we knew most of our Unfortunately, we were only able to buy topsoil for campers would be coming for summer resident camp, Camp Molly Lauman. Without rich, organic material, and our goal was to be able to supply a delicious, fresh the soil would become hard and dry and there salad bar for all the girls in camp to enjoy. Campers wouldn’t be very many nutrients for the plants. As would spend some of their time learning in the garden good Girl Scouts do, we put on our thinking camps and and helping out with the picking and weeding. decided to mix bags of hummus, similar to compost, After thinking about what each garden would offer, into the soil. Problem solved! we set-out to design them! We wanted the Camp K-J 8

You might be curious to know what we planted in our gardens. Since the garden belongs to the Girl Scouts who visit camp, it made sense to let you decide. Every girl that came to Camp Ken-Jockety day camp last year got to work in the garden, whether planting new seeds, pulling weeds, or picking something fresh to eat. If you went to resident camp last year, you probably did activities in the garden and maybe even made a salad for dinner with fresh greens and veggies. We planted lettuce, broccoli, radishes, carrots, peppers, tomatoes (lots of different kinds!), asparagus, green beans, snap peas, cucumbers, zucchini, and more. Once the jury came back, it was clear: Lots of you told us that the food was yummy. That’s because it was as fresh as can be and everything tastes better when you helped grow it! So, what’s next for our gardens? Well, spring is when we are preparing the soil for new plants and deciding what we want to grow this year. In the summer, we will be picking lots of produce for our programs or to
Camp Ken-Jockety and the Elam Environmental Center are looking for a few motivated gardeners to help us harvest our crops during the summer of 2014. Throughout the summer we have tons of different veggies that will need to be picked, weighed and prepared to send to a local food bank. It’s a great way to learn about our camp garden, and to all lend a helping hand to those who don’t always have food on the table. If you have a troop or group who is interested, we would love to set up a time for you to work with the KJ Program staff to pick some wonderful produce! If you are looking for service hours, this may be the perfect opportunity! Harvest Club programs are free and can be scheduled at your convenience! You will receive a patch!
