A message from the CEO and Board Chair

Board of Directors* 2011-2012 Chair Ellen Steel First Vice Chair Rita Van Schoiack

2012, Girl Scouts’ 100th anniversary year, was every bit as eventful as we had hoped! There were special activities throughout the year and across the council, beginning with a public kickoff in Portland's Pioneer Courthouse Square in March.

Second Vice Chair Kathy Lucier

August brought the two biggest activities for the council. The first, the week-long

Treasurer

Northwest Centennial Roundup near Sweet Home, was attended by almost 400

Elaine Teague

girls and volunteers from all over our council. We even had visitors from Canada! August also brought our largest 100th anniversary event of the year – the Birthday Celebration with more than 3,500 participants at the Linn County Fairgrounds in

Secretary Roberta Janssen

Albany. It was truly amazing to see us all together! These events gave us an

Members-At-Large

opportunity to reflect on the first 100 years of Girl Scouting and to think about the

Elizabeth Clarke

challenges and changes the next 100 years will bring for the Girl Scout movement.

Debi Coleman (August 2012) Terry Coryell

2012 was also a year of some difficult choices for our council. Over the past three

Cara Fischer

years Girl Scouts of Oregon and Southwest Washington has operated in an

Elizabeth Hatfield-Keller

unsustainable budget deficit. While the causes of this are varied, it is our

Eva Labby

responsibility to serve girls well today and in the future with a strong financial

Joan Lintz

foundation. A balanced budget is the first and most important step in doing so.

Anna Mortsfield

Thus, the hard decision was made to close service centers in Klamath Falls,

Nancie Paxton

Roseburg and Salem and to reduce personnel and administrative costs across

Ara Serjoie

the council. Through this, we worked hard to maintain and protect services for

Maureen Vega

girls and to continue to provide the highest level of support to our volunteers. We

Lara Williams Pearsall

are confident that these changes, while difficult, will guarantee the financial health of our council going forward.

Chief Executive Officer As we begin our next century, we want to take this opportunity to thank you, our

Karen Hill

members, for your dedication to the Girl Scout movement and for the time, energy and leadership you provide that helps build girls of courage, confidence and character. There would be no Girl Scouting without you!

*As of April 21, 2012.

Sincerely,

Ellen Steel

STRATEGIC LEARNING 2010-2012 Beginning in June 2009, Girl Scouts of Oregon and Southwest Washington undertook an effort known as “Strategic Learning,” a leadership process that generates a cycle of ongoing discovery and adaptation. Balancing flexibility, thoughtful analysis and creative thinking, the process has four steps: learn, focus, align and execute. The first three steps in this process helped GSOSW identify five key priorities: communication, council integration, funding/fund development, membership and program. Gap statements - a sort of roadmap of the “gap” which must be closed to achieve success - were identified for each priority. Over the last three years, GSOSW has actively worked to close these gaps during the “execute” phase, which came to a close in 2012. Below are some highlights of the work that has been done over the last three years for each key priority. The strategic learning process will begin again in 2013 at the “learn” phase, helping us define new priorities to guide our work as we continue to build girls of courage, confidence and character, who make the world a better place. To learn more about the Strategic Learning process, or stay informed about 2013 progress, visit girlscoutsosw.org.

COMMUNICATIONS

Gap statement: Communications to all stakeholders will be consistent, succinct, professional and build a compelling, contemporary brand. Key progress: Refreshed Girl Scout brand, website and related resources

Established consistent email communications to all stakeholders

Increased marketing partnerships and media outreach

Primary learnings and opportunities: Communications resources - whether volunteers, community partners, or technology - can be used more wisely in the future. Communications coordinators and community engagement can help grow and strengthen our brand.

COUNCIL INTEGRATION

Gap Statement: All areas of the council feel supported and involved in an organizational culture that speaks with one voice and provides its girl members with experiences that create new and unifying traditions. Key progress: Developed council staff as a team, leading the conversation

Fostered volunteer interraction across the council

Measured and evaluated progress through surveys

Primary learnings and opportunities: Time and shared experiences are needed for all members of GSOSW to feel a part of the whole. While progress has been made, there is still much work to do. Staff can support volunteers in this process by sharing, across all departments, responsibility for council integration.

INSPIRE GIRLS TO GROW INTO THEI 4

FUNDING/FUND DEVELOPMENT

Gap Statement: Contributed income, combined with other revenue streams, provides the income needed to sustain a vibrant Girl Scout program throughout Oregon and Southwest Washington. Key progress: Provided more timely and informative donor communication

Strengthened Family Partnership campaign

Developed alumnae outreach and communication plan

Primary learnings and opportunities: Opportunities for progress exist with fundraising events, direct appeals, planned giving, major gifts and grants.

MEMBERSHIP

Gap Statement: GSOSW has increased membership and diversity, and provides girls and adults with simple, flexible pathways for participation. Key progress: Increased girl and adult membership

Grew membership in underserved populations

Implemented GSUSA membership/volunteer/ program model

Primary learnings and opportunities: Healthy service units, that acknowledge geographic and community difference, are critical to the success of Girl Scouting in our council. Promotion of all pathways and re-engagement strategies can improve overall membership.

PROGRAM

Gap Statement: Girls in GSOSW participate in relevant programs through flexible pathways that incorporate new and traditional experiences that develop life and leadership skills. Key progress:

Strengthened community partnerships

Integrated Journeys into program curriculum

Developed more volunteer-delivered options

Primary learnings and opportunities: Flexibility is key for Girl Scout program. Further development of all pathways will assist in membership growth and program diversity. Girl program needs and interests will drive program property development.

IR FULL POTENTIAL AND BECOME LEADERS Girl Scouts of Oregon and SW Washington | 2012 Annual Report 5

A new stage for the amphitheater will be a hit with campers this summer! Also huge for girls will be the new, screenedin walls which have been added to the Adirondacks, fully enclosing these structures. This improvement will result in no more bats or other critters to keep campers company. New wood sheds have been built for units. Staff and volunteers will really appreciate the new commercial mixer in the lodge kitchen as well. The new staff house was completed and furnished this year and was in service in the summer. Camp staff loved it and it's getting a lot of use from user groups as well. There are new dock landings at the waterfront, made from Trex material. No more splinters! The hardwood floor in the lodge has been stripped and beautifully refinished and is ready for campers this summer!

The arena has been replaced and enlarged. Girls and their horses appreciated that last summer. Also, girls enjoyed new mattresses. The pool infrastructure has been improved with the addition of an ADA entry lift and electrical upgrades. The ADA bathroom in Richard’s Lodge is now complete and the freezer in The Swallows got a new lease on life with a new condenser. 6

We are all welcoming the addition of a new dishwashing pit and sanitizer in the lodge. The previous machine was old and cranky. Please join us in welcoming the Corn Crib building back. It has been refurbished and is available for use the summer of 2013. New mattresses will be enjoyed by girls too!

Volunteers and day camps especially like the new commercial dishwasher, now available in the kitchen at Marilyn’s Place. The life of the Rafters building has been extended by repairs to the soffit and installation of new gutters. Our ranger, "Hopper," is even more efficient and present all around camp with his new all-terrain vehicle. There is a new bird blind for observing the many birds found near the pond. Along with four pair of donated binoculars, the blind provides an enriching activity for girls. Speaking of ponds, the pond at Mountaindale is teeming with a variety of fish – from catfish to mosquito fish and a lot in between. It is interesting to note that these fish will help seal the bottom of the pond and enhance the overall health of the pond. There is a new duck-breeding house – see if you can find it! We are all hoping that the bats find their new house near Rafters too. We are thankful for two knot demonstration boards, donated by service units. Girls enjoyed the letter boxes and geocache last summer and will for years to come. For those ambitious enough to venture up the Challenger Hill trail, there is a new metal bench ready to rest on at the top.

Visitors to the Seaside house will notice a remodeled, accessible bathroom with a shower. No more trips to the sports center across the street to shower in the morning! Three cheers for this very welcome addition. 7

Where is she now? GSOSW caught up with one of our recent alumnae - one you may recognize

You may remember little Girl Scout Daisy-Kirigin Elstad was on the cover of a local 1988 Annual Report. Have you ever wondered what happened to her? Well, we found out! Kirigin was born on March 12, 1984, and was honored in the hospital by a group of Girl Scouts delivering Girl Scout t-shirts to girls born on the date of Girl Scouting's anniversary. Her birthday is what led to her being on the cover of the 1988 report. Kirigin’s mother and a friend’s mother later became her troop leaders when she became a Girl Scout Brownie. Kirigin continued in Girl Scouting until she was in high school. When GSOSW spoke to Kirigin, she had recently graduated from medical school at Tufts University. She had just returned from Nicaragua, where she had been working with a non-governmental organization called Bridges to Community, which works with medical and dental groups from the United States to bring healthcare to the rural people of Nicaragua. Kirigin was in Nicaragua for two months providing medical care that may seem basic and routine in the United States, but is very hard to come by in rural South America. She said that one of the biggest challenges was finding sustainable treatment for run-of-the-mill ailments - things like iron deficiency and pain that Nicaraguans can continue to use after the volunteer doctors were gone. “We could give a kid a bottle of iron, but that wouldn’t’ last forever,” Kirigin said. “We tried to teach them to find iron in their food.” She said that they spent time educating the community – both about basic healthcare and what to do when things got bad. Kirigin and her mother were featured in an Oregonian article about Girl Scouts delivering t-shirts to newborns

She also said that her time with Girl Scouts helped her be a better doctor and better leader in such an unusual situation. “Some of the character traits that we work on in Girl Scouts really reflect some of the character traits that we strive for in medicine and in medical school - learning how to be doctors and learning how to be good leaders,” she told GSOSW. “Girl Scouts obviously encourages community service, and that’s something we do a lot of in medicine, and that’s what this Nicaragua trip was about. We were giving back a little bit now that we actually had skills to give back with.” Kirigin has since returned to the US and moved to Denver, CO to start the next phase of her education at Exempla St. Joseph’s Hospital. She is excited about the future of women in STEM careers.

“I think that medicine has really opened doors to women…. A lot of the older doctors that I work with are men because there weren’t many women in the field, but a lot of the incoming doctors are women.” Visit girlscoutsosw.org to learn more about STEM opportunities in our council and to check out an Alumnae study of women and STEM fields.

Girl Scout awarded Bronze Cross for saving two lives After risking her own life to save two other children from drowning, 14 year old Christina "Kate" Jerome received Girl Scouting's highest lifesaving award, the Bronze Cross. Only 4-6 girls receive the award annually out of 2.3 million Girl Scouts nationwide. On July 24, 2012, Taytam Trauthwein, her younger brother Rylee and Kate Jerome were swimming in Lake Cleawox near Florence, Oregon. Rylee began to panic and struggle in

the water. Kate immediately offered help and safely got Rylee to shore. Meanwhile, Taytam began to have an asthma attack. Kate swam Taytam safely to shore as well.

Area paramedics, who responded to the emergency in July, said of Kate, "She did a wonderful job. If she hadn't reacted the way she did, things may have played out differently. She deserves the Girlaward." Scouts of Oregon and SW Washington | 2012 Annual Report 9

Girl Scouts kick off anniversary year at Portland's Pioneer Square Girl Scouts of Oregon and Southwest Washington kicked off the 100th anniversary of Girl Scouting with a huge party in Pioneer Courthouse Square. Over a thousand Girl Scouts gathered to learn about the history of Girl Scouting, eat green-frosted cupcakes and rock out at a Radio Disney concert. Even though it was a rainy spring day, girls enjoyed visiting booths from program partners and volunteers, earning stamps in their paper passports through Girl Scout history. Portland Search and Rescue, Teatro Milagro, Dairy Farmers of Oregon, Wells Fargo and Mad Science were just a few of the community members who turned out to celebrate with girls. Volunteers set up booths teaching girls about semaphore (flag signaling), historical uniforms, Juliette Gordon Low and more. Girl Scouts of all ages attended the event and they all held one thing in common: Girl Scouting has helped them grow into the best person they can be. Cassie Hansen, a Girl Scout of 18 years, told The Oregonian that she had joined for the community service aspect, but had also learned leadership, teamwork and lots of outdoor skills. "If you really stick with it, it makes you a better person," Hansen said. The Lake

Girl Scouts participated in a friendship circle that surrouned most of Pioneer Square in downtown Portland.

Oswego High School senior said Girl Scouting served as a common ground when she was applying for honors colleges and emailing with admissions advisors. After a day full of history, karaoke and cupcakes, the Girl Scouts and volunteers in attendance joined hands in an enormous Friendship Circle that

surrounded most of Pioneer Courthouse Square – nearly the size of a full city block – and sang “Make New Friends.” It would be only the beginning of a year of celebrations across Oregon and Southwest Washington.

Mary K. King and her "Hello Dolly" troop bring a lesson in Girl Scout history to La Grande and Hermiston Girl Scouts in Eastern Oregon got a special treat when Mary K. King brought an entire troop of dolls in vintage Girl Scout uniforms to two recruitment events. Mary, a lifetime member of Girl Scouts, even wore her 1991 uniform. She also presented a slideshow of Girl Scout gatherings and taught the girls a traditional song and dance. “Girl Scouts have been going on for a very long time,” said Caci McAloon, 12, 10 10

a Girl Scout Cadette who attended the event told the East Oregonian. “We have a legacy and I want to be a part of that legacy.” "I thought it was a wonderful way to celebrate the 100th anniversary and I loved to be a part of it," Mary told GSOSW. She also told us the most common question girls ask about the dolls: “Can I take her home?”

700 Girl Scouts celebrate at all-day anniversary party at State Capitol Oregon’s state capitol hosted over 700 girls at a celebration on March 17, 2012 hosted by Service Unit 28. The all-day event included free rides at the Salem Riverfront Carousel, “Living Legacy” activities at the Deepwood Estate Carriage House, and many activities at Mission Mill, culminating in a celebration on the steps of the Capitol. Activities throughout the day gave Girl Scouts the opportunity to work toward the Girl Scout Way badge. Girls spoke with Girl Scout alumnae and watched “The Golden Eaglet.” They traded SWAPS and sang camp songs. At the State Capitol in the afternoon, Oregon State Senator Jackie Winters spoke and presented the state proclamation to

Girl Scouts show off their large collection of patches on the State Capitol steps.

SU 28 delegates Allie Kehret and Elizabeth Rushing. After the ceremony, girls enjoyed a special 100th birthday cake.

Bend Girl Scouts in Bend held an anniversary celebration at the Moose Lodge on March 14, 2012. About 150 people attended. Girl Scouts celebrated with a 100th birthday cake. They made friendship bracelets, joined in a singa-long and played Girl Scout bingo. Around the same time, Troop 50221 held a Centennial Alumnae Dinner for over 40 local Girl Scout alumnae. The girls made dinner and gave historical presentations, complete with photos. The dinner culminated in a rededication ceremony for all attendees.

North Bend The Bend anniversary event featured a timeline display of historical Girl Scout uniforms and materials.

The North Bend Service Center honored the occasion with an Anniversary Tea on March 18 at the Pony Village Mall. Around 150 people attended. There was an especially large

turnout of Girl Scout alumnae, who were invited to share their Girl Scout stories during a special “open mic” period of the event. Local Girl Scouts participated in an historical fashion show with vintage uniforms while tea, sandwiches and recipes using Girl Scout cookies were served.

Medford The Medford Service Center hosted an event on March 17, 2012 at the Rogue Valley Mall. The event was open to the public and featured a historical Girl Scout uniform fashion show, informational booths and craft activities for attendees. "You get these festivals, you get these parties. You get to raise money so you can have your own parties. It's just great being a Girl Scout," Girl Scout Brownie Gabriella K. told KOBI at the event.

Board member has a lifetime love of Girl Scout camp There’s a light in Eva Labby’s eyes. She’s holding a simple foot stool – smooth legs and a hand-woven seat. It shows wear, but not much. She made it more than 65 years ago at Girl Scout camp, when she was 11. Eva spent countless summers at Girl Scout camps throughout Oregon. “I can still remember looking up at the stars and being so impressed with the vastness of the universe.” Eva and her family emigrated from Germany in 1937, and have since become an inextricable part of Girl Scout history.

Her mother, Marie Lamfrom, lead a Girl Scout troop at Shriners Hospital in Portland for 35 years. While she shared many of her mother’s Girl Scout experiences, Eva’s true love is camping. Apart from her work on GSOSW’s board of directors, that’s where she’s left her mark. In 1948, before any campers had ever set foot on the property, Eva helped plan and prepare Camp Wind Mountain – now known and loved as Camp Arrowhead. More on Eva's story will be on the GSOSW blog this spring. 11 Girl Scouts of Oregon and SW Washington | 2012 Annual Report 11

Girl Scouts pack Linn County Expo Center for 100th Anniversary Birthday Celebration

Girl Scout Gold Award recipients, continued

Early in the morning on August 11, 2012, the doors opened to the Linn County Expo Center in Albany, OR and the equipment started rolling in. Months of preparation led up to this day: the day of the 100th Anniversary Birthday Celebration. Thousands of girls and adults had registered to attend (the total was over 3,500!) Nearly 50 businesses and program partners had signed on. The day kicked off with an expo-style event that featured fun activities and learning opportunities for girls. Franz Bakery brought different types of bread and talked to the girls about how wheat is grown and what parts of the plant bread is made from. Oregon Fish and Wildlife brought live lampreys for girls to investigate. Cabela’s conducted an archery demonstration and taught girls about the sport and how to enjoy it safely. The event also featured live entertainment from Radio Disney, a historical Girl Scout fashion show and a self-defense and antibullying demonstration presented by Aim High Academy of Martial Arts. Each booth provided girls with an interactive activity or craft. Before long, most attendees were walking around with freshly styled hair, painted nails and Girl Scout tattoos. Adults participated in contests over Twitter, and tweets about the event were displayed on a large wall sponsored by Oil Can Henry’s. All girls who attended the event got a special rocker patch to add to their uniform provided by the Marie Lamfrom Charitable Foundation. The event culminated in a large outdoor concert from Radio Disney stars Savannah Outen, Coco Jones and Greyson Chance. Girls who reached special cookie sales goals were rewarded with meet-andgreet sessions with the performers beforehand and special seating at the concert. Thousands of Girl Scouts gathered to enjoy the music and cool off with ice cream bars. Overall the event was an enormous success, bringing together program partners, community members and Girl Scouts from across Oregon and Southwest Washington.
