New Automotive Engineering Badges Page 8
Our pre-COVID world seems like a lifetime ago. I am so proud of the way our staff and volunteers immediately began working on new ways to serve our girls and volunteers safely and to support them during these challenging times. While we have been busy offering a robust portfolio of programs this summer, we have simultaneously been preparing for the fall. The reality is we will be delivering Girl Scouting Marguerite Woungduring a pandemic over an extended Chapman period of time. We will continue to Chair of the Board and follow the guidelines of the CDC and President of the Council our local officials regarding in-person meetings and events. In the meantime, our staff and volunteers will continue to produce quality, alternative programming that keeps girls engaged until the day when we can re-open all of our Resource Centers and camps for the comprehensive in-person experiences our families love. When girls were asked what they are interested in doing online, it is no surprise that the #1 response is the opportunity to hang out and have fun with their troop! When very interested and somewhat interested are combined, this response is closely followed by badge earning with their troop, STEM workshops with cool scientists, and videos where you can follow along at home. We know that girls need a sense of community more than ever. And we know that Girl Scouts is uniquely positioned to offer that sense of community. We can offer girls virtual opportunities when in-person is not available. And we can quickly pivot to local blended opportunities when it’s safe to get outdoors in small groups and then to travel and larger events when those open up too. We also know that our volunteers, most importantly our Community and troop volunteers, need additional resources to be successful – and those resources need to be tailored to the wide spectrum of volunteers we serve, from the 1st year leader to the experienced/comfortable leader to the experienced/overwhelmed leader – and we know that last group is growing in a COVID world. I can tell you that we are working around the clock to build the resources you need. Right now, the most important thing you can be for your girls is an anchor to community…to friendships, to a caring adult and to a place where your girls are always welcome when everything else in the world may be changing. If that means that you don’t earn as many badges this year, that’s okay. If that means, you have some meetings that are truly just fun hang out sessions with your troop, you’re doing exactly what the girls said they want the most right now. Now is also a good time to draw your parents in. You can ask your parents to hold some of these hang out sessions using the resources we will provide while you focus on other things. Girl Scouting will always be here for you. We are really excited about the Fall Product Program that will start on September 29. This program helps troops earn money that they can use all year. Plus it helps girls earn entrepreneurship skills. Have you seen the new tin for this year! Check it out on page 4.

The Importance of Giving Back Giving back to the community is a longstanding Girl Scout tradition, and in times of crisis that is no different. Whether Girl Scouts are stepping up to provide resources or coming together to support their sister Girl Scouts, you can always find a Girl Scout wanting to help her community. From safely delivering cookies to first responders and sending notes to seniors to helping our local food banks make sure no one goes hungry, there are many ways Girl Scouts are giving back. Our Movement instills these values in girls, and they carry this with them for the rest of their lives. GSSJC also relies on those giving back – through the generous donations of our donors, parents and families. Many families in our communities are struggling to cope, not only with COVID-19, but the implications of job loss and a vulnerable economy. This is also true for girls. There will be much need for Girl Scouting as girls deal with the stress of the current situation and its impact on their lives, and we expect an increase in the need for financial assistance as family situations change. As families turn to trusted and accessible activities for their girls, we are prepared to meet their needs, serve our community and deliver our programming in ways that are safe and effective. And we need your help. Girl Scouts can make a huge difference right now in the lives of our girls by providing a sense of belonging to girls who are missing school and their friends and safe spaces to grow their confidence and leadership skills. We build resilience, compassion and coping skills which will help girls navigate through this new normal. Girl Scouting can provide a sense of calm in her life amidst all the uncertainty. We hope you will consider a donation to Girl Scouts of San Jacinto Council now to ensure we can continue our life changing programming for all girls. Help us ensure we have the necessary funds to meet the increased demands for financial assistance at a time when our girls need us the most. We believe that every girl has the right to be a Girl Scout regardless of her family’s situation or ability to pay. Girl Scouts have a long history of giving back. We help our girls find meaningful ways to give back, which helps them understand what it really means to live by the Girl Scout Law. We will hope you will honor this tradition by giving back too. Your gift to GSSJC is an investment in the lives of girls within 26 counties in Southeast Texas. We use our resources to ensure every girl in Southeast Texas gains the skills and confidence to accept challenges, overcome obstacles and become leaders. Every dollar you give stays right here in our council, bringing Girl Scouting to nearly 54,000 girls each year. Girls are worthy of your investment and on behalf of them and their future, we thank you. For more information, visit our website at gssjc.org/donate or contact Nancy Hall at nhall@sjgs.org or 713-292-0282.

National Hispanic Heritage Month Since 1988, Americans have celebrated National Hispanic Heritage month from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15. This 30-day period encompasses the independence celebrations of various Latin American and South American countries and is a time to highlight Hispanic history and heritage as well as the contributions of Hispanic Americans to our country. Girl Scouts of San Jacinto Council is proud to have had the first Hispanic troop established in the country in 1922, the same year the council was founded. Some inspiring Hispanic Girl Scout alumnae include: Supreme Court Judge Sonia Sotomayor; Ellen Ochoa, the first Hispanic woman to go to space; Dolores Huerta, a civil rights activist; and Girl Scouts' former CEO and rocket scientist Sylvia Acevedo. There are so many great Hispanic female role models- see who your girls know about! These women aren’t just role models for Hispanic or Latina women. They’re not even just role models for women. They are role models for all of us as humans, striving to be the best we can and give the best we’ve got back to our chosen fields, our communities and future generations. Join us in applauding all they’ve given us, as well as the legacies they’ve already left and continue to create. Girls and troops are encouraged to take time during this period to celebrate the rich diversity in Girl Scouts of San Jacinto Council through education about Hispanic heritage and participation in activities and events that are culturally relevant to the Hispanic community. This wasn’t the first time my daughter has completed a Journey, nor is it her first time to be a camper. My daughter had more excitement in this week about her camp than she’s ever had! She couldn’t wait to tell us what funny things her counselors did or said. She told us all about her Take Action project over dinner one night.

She loved it and enjoyed it. She said, “When is the next virtual camp? I want to be in it because I had fun!”
