PROFESSIONAL AND GRADUATE STAFF RECRUITMENT GUIDE
MESSAGE FROM OUR EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR I can remember when I arrived here at Georgia Southern University to interview. The sun was out, Sweetheart Circle was flowering, lakes and ponds on campus were beautiful. Students walked, biked and skated by, displaying a lot of pride for both Georgia Southern and the many student organizations they represented. What I remember the most, though, and what I am most thankful for to this day, were the people. The students, faculty and staff stuck out as some of the most encouraging, welcoming people I’d met. As the University has expanded to three campuses (the Statesboro Campus, the Armstrong Campus in Savannah and the Liberty Campus in Hinesville), the connections with our people are deeper than ever. The people I get to work with help make Georgia Southern and University Housing so special. It is our goal, from the simplest to most complex level, to deliver a living experience which will positively impact the lives of our students. It is my goal to impress upon everyone we meet that our staff is available, inclusive, hard working and innovative in supporting and developing our students. I should hope anyone would say we do the same for one another as staff. This team challenges one another to the highest of standards and ethics, always keeping true to our student-centered approach. We are committed to the ideas behind living and learning on campus. Partnerships and collaborations across campuses are hallmarks for what we do to provide the best for our students. Guided by our values and PRIDE for what we do, University Housing has the opportunity to continue to improve and innovate to meet the needs of our residential students on both the Statesboro and Armstrong campuses. I am excited you have expressed an interest in joining the team and being part of what makes University Housing truly unique. I feel the professional experiences available to you through Residence Education, Housing operations, facilities, teaching and customer service will allow you to expand your competencies and to grow and develop as professionals. I trust after you review this guide and meet our team you will be eager to discuss how Georgia Southern University Housing may be the right fit for you! Thank you for your interest. Welcome to your home away from home.

MESSAGE FROM THE ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR OF RESIDENCE EDUCATION I am thrilled you have shown an interest in applying to Georgia Southern University. The potential to have you join our Eagle family as a Graduate Assistant, Graduate Resident Director, or Resident Director is an exciting one for us, as hopefully it is for you. We feel that the experience one can gain as a Georgia Southern GA, GRD, or RD is among the best that you will find in your search for similar positions. Our University and our team is growing and changing on a regular basis, and while that can be challenging for many, we look at it as an opportunity to develop and grow. Our team in Residence Education brings together professionals and paraprofessionals from across the world who strive to create a positive, safe and engaging residential student experience. We utilize a residential curriculum model based in Emotionally Intelligent Leadership, Maslow’s hierarchy, and Transition theory to guide our interactions with our residents. We are constantly assessing our approach to the work we do, and are always seeking to improve the experiences of both our residential students and the student and professional staff members in our department. When I arrived at Georgia Southern four years ago, I took note of the tremendous potential that exists in this University and within our department. I desperately wanted to be part of that experience, and I have gained so much from having been here. I also sought the opportunity to be part of and build a great team of staff members within Residence Education, and I am proud of the strides we have made in those efforts, and I always look forward to leading the process of finding new individuals to join our family. Our family (as that’s what we are, in so many ways) strives to provide an authentic, caring and enriching experience for our Graduate staff and full-time Resident Directors. We fully recognize all that goes into making a decision like the one you will soon face, and we feel that the experiences one has as a Georgia Southern GA, GRD or RD is equitable to any you may explore in this process. We acknowledge that these are strange times we are all navigating. Our experiences running a successful search for both graduate and full-time staff last year has given us confidence that our process helps our candidates to gain a comprehensive understanding of what it means to be a part of our department. We value and espouse transparency through our process, and are seeking for you to gain an understanding of our culture as much as we are hoping to ascertain your personality, skills and interest in our department. We are looking for great new additions to our Residence Education family on both the Armstrong and Statesboro campuses, and we hope you will give us the opportunity to explore the fit that might exist between you and us. We are committed to making the experience a positive one, and look forward to discussing your potential as a Georgia Southern Eagle!
Warmest Regards,
Ben Wicker
Associate Director of Residence Education
Getting to Know Southern PEOPLE. PURPOSE. ACTION. Georgia Southern is a university rich in history. Since its humble beginnings as First District A&M School in 1906 through its 2018 consolidation with Armstrong State University, the school has established a wide range of traditions which serve to distinguish it from its peers and deepen the bond with its own students as each year passes. The Eagle Nation is built on these bonds, soaring on the cheers of students, alumni and loyal fans who shout “Georgia…” and know with confidence the answer they’ll receive. Georgia Southern has grown to three distinct campuses, serving the needs of one dynamic institution. The Statesboro Campus is 900 acres of Georgian-style, red-brick historic buildings and modern contemporary buildings set amid pines and oaks and is home to more than 20,000 students; the Armstrong Campus in Savannah is a 268-acre arboretum campus just minutes away from historic downtown Savannah and is home to some 6,500 students; and a modern, state-of-the-art facility in Hinesville is geared for local and military-affiliated students.
A Regional Powerhouse Georgia Southern is now the state’s largest and most comprehensive university south of Atlanta and is classified as a Doctoral/R2 “high research” institution by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. Emphasis on serving returning veterans has earned the University a “military-friendly” designation for the 10th year in a row by Victory Media, publisher of G.I. Jobs, STEM Jobs and Military Spouse magazines. Kiplinger has named Georgia Southern a “Top 100 Best Value,” and Forbes magazine named the University among America’s Best Midsize Employers for 2018. It is an exciting time to be a part of Eagle Nation! We are focused on student success. We are focused on hands-on learning. We are focused on close connections with faculty and students, and we are here because we want to make an impact on our communities, our region and our state.

INTEGRATION OF A RESIDENTIAL CURRICULUM Our Learning Philosophy
LEARNING IN THE RESIDENCE HALLS Our staff know that living on campus is more than just having a place to sleep. It is one of the most impactful out-of-classroom experiences for students during their college experience. Because of this, our department is dedicated to providing a supportive and engaging environment which helps students succeed during and beyond their time in our halls. Our goal is to provide a space for residents to grow as individuals, connect with others, and understand the impact they have on their community. In order to reach this goal, our department has utilized a residential curriculum model since the summer of 2012. A residential curriculum model is a specific method of delivering intentional, sequenced education in the residence hall environment to promote student growth and success. Stemming from an educational priority and department goals, this model serves as the foundation upon which our department operates. It influences our priorities, decisions, staff training practices, professional development plans and student engagement practices.
RESIDENTIAL CURRICULUM TERMINOLOGY COMMUNITY-WIDE STRATEGIES

These events will be implemented by a curriculum subcommittee, which will consist of one RD lead and 2-3 RD, GRD, and/or RA members and one RELT advisor. All residents will be invited to participate in all Signature Events, regardless of RD/GRD complex assignments, and all events will be marketed to all residents campus-wide by the central office and each complex. Participants of this series will be tracked by the event subcommittee and provided to the HIP Subcommittee to count into HIP participation.
• Socials - Strategies that may be active or passive which occur within an individual community within a complex once or twice a month. These strategies should incorporate the outcomes of the either/both of the Student Success Goals. • Passive Strategies - Interactive, passive strategies that will be implemented within an individual community within a complex typically once a month. OUR RESIDENTIAL CURRICULUM Our department’s educational priority states that “students who participate in the residential experience will become engaged citizens and lifelong learners who actively contribute to the betterment of themselves and their communities.” From this priority we have Student Success Goals, Learning Goals and Residential Learning Community Goals. These goals work together to provide engaged students with a transformative experience that contributes to their success personally, academically and professionally. Within our Student Success Goals, we concentrate on increasing student’s sense of belonging and academic success through intentional conversations with student staff, partnerships with academic units, and hosting events that promote connection to peers and campus. Our four Learning Goals state that students who participate in their residential experience will:
Commit to Self-Discovery We want our students to learn about their own values, interests, strengths and goals while developing the ability to overcome challenging situations.
Develop as a Lifelong Learner We want our students to be able to think critically about sources of information and be able to appropriately transfer learning to new situations.
Become an Engaged Citizen We want our students to learn how to acknowledge, take pride in, and positively contribute to the communities in which they belong.
Contribute to Inclusive Communities We want our students to learn about their own identities, how others may have different experiences from their own, and be able to advocate for their needs and the needs of others effectively. Lastly, staff who work with students in our Residential Learning Communities focus on connecting students to their major, a campus program, faculty and staff, and/or a topic of interest.

ARMSTRONG CAMPUS At A Glance... In 1935, Savannah Mayor Thomas Gamble founded the Armstrong Campus — then known as Armstrong Junior College — in order to help stimulate Savannah’s economy and advance opportunities for local youth who could not afford to attend college away from home. The school began with 175 students and was located in the historic Armstrong House on Bull Street at the northern end of Forsyth Park. In 1966, after receiving four-year status and a 250-acre donation from The Mills B. Lane Foundation and Donald Livingston, Armstrong moved to its current location on Abercorn Extension in Savannah’s southside. Throughout the next 30 years of growth, Armstrong added graduate programs in business and education and became a Regional Health Professions Education Center. The institution’s growth culminated in 1996 with university status and a new name: Armstrong Atlantic State University. Just two years later, Armstrong collaborated with Georgia Southern and other USG institutions to create the Liberty Center in Hinesville in order to offer degree programs to the active duty and veteran military and their families in the area. Liberty County is the home of Fort Stewart, the largest military base east of the Mississippi. In 2018, Armstrong and Georgia Southern University consolidated, creating an institution which retained the Georgia Southern University name comprised of nine colleges on three campuses: the Statesboro Campus, the Armstrong Campus in Savannah, Georgia, and the Liberty Campus in Hinesville, Georgia.

STATESBORO CAMPUS At A Glance... The Statesboro Campus was founded in 1906 as a school for teaching modern agricultural production techniques and homemaking skills to rural school children. The First District A&M School began within two decades to shift its emphasis to meet the growing need for teachers within the state. Its name and mission were changed in 1924 to Georgia Normal School as a training ground for educators, though it continued to accept “preparatory” or high school students. Five years later in 1929, full-fledged senior college status was granted as South Georgia Teachers College. Ensuing decades saw additional name and mission changes: to Georgia Teachers College in 1939 and Georgia Southern College in 1959. Continued program and physical expansion, including one seven-year stretch, 1984-91 in which enrollment doubled from just over 6,000 to more than 12,000 students, led to a final transformation in 1990 to Georgia Southern University. The growing demand for online learning has brought online bachelor’s degrees in business, nursing and information technology. Master’s programs are offered online in nursing, business, accounting, economics, computer science, coaching, kinesiology and a broad choice of education fields. A doctoral program in nursing is also available.

SWEETHEART CIRCLE Some universities have “squares,” but Georgia Southern University has Sweetheart Circle. Sweetheart Circle derives its name from what students used to call the “Sweetheart Campus.” The rolling lawn of picturesque live oaks and pecan trees has played host to many important events in the University’s history, including countless marriage proposals and wedding ceremonies – a tradition that continues today. It is said that if you walk around the circle three times with your sweetheart, you are sure to be married.
GEORGIA!... SOUTHERN!... Georgia Southern alumni and fans all know this famous Eagle “shout out.” Georgia Southern spirit is alive and well as fans and alumni make sure everyone knows who we are. Whether you run into a fellow alum in the airport, see a classmate at a restaurant in Atlanta or are cheering on your Eagles at a sporting event, the chant “Georgia …” — “Southern…” are the only two words you need to know.
