YOUR GUIDE TO THE HONORS G N I N R A E L G N I V I L COMMUNITY

Honors LLC

A Community of Scholars

ABOUT THE COMMUNITY LOCATION & ROOM TYPES Armstrong Campus Windward Commons Private or Semi-Private Bedroom Statesboro Campus Centennial Place Shared Bedroom, 2-, or 4-Bedroom Suite

REQUIREMENTS $20 RLC Activity Fee (per semester) Participation in Community Activities Throughout the Year

Sponsored by the Honors College, this inclusive community allows ďŹ rst year Honors students the opportunity to engage with peers, faculty, and alumni through socials, service projects, and leadership development workshops. The community also provides students with an environment that supports academic success. Because LLC members are in many of the same courses, it is natural for study groups to form.

THE COMMUNITY EXPERIENCE Students in this community tell us how much they appreciate living with like-minded peers. Not only are the other LLC members your classmates and friends, but they also become your cheerleaders, sounding boards, support system, and professional network. The LLC truly provides students with the opportunity to be a part of a community of scholars. Your Honors peers are just as dedicated to their academic and professional goals as you are. Like you, they are motivated and driven to reach their goals. Between the community atmosphere, meaningful conversations, specialty events, and opportunities to connect with faculty - you will be inspired and challenged to be the best possible version of yourself during your time at Georgia Southern.

COMMUNITY TRADITIONS & PROGRAMS The LLC Advisory Board is made up of housing staff and Honors College leadership. Each year, this group works together to design experiences tailored for our LLC students. Some past community traditions and events include: ★

Early Move-In & LLC Welcome Events: For years, our Honors LLC students have participated in an early move-in. Not only does this give you a stress-free move-in process, but it gives you an opportunity to get to know your neighbors, meet Honors faculty, and participate in LLC welcome events before classes even start. Cooking with the Profs: Faculty and staff volunteer to come to the community to cook a home cooked meal for students. This informal time with professionals from all over campus is a great time to learn more about them, their journey, and get their advice on how to make the most of your first year. Coffee Chats: These laid-back coffee hours bring in a guest speaker to discuss a predetermined topic. Past topics have included how to meet your Honors College experiential learning requirements, learning about campus jobs and leadership experiences, info sessions on study abroad opportunities, and more! You can also let the LLC Advisory Board or SAB know if there are other topics you’d like to hear about.

The Student Advisory Board: Members of the community are welcome to join the Honors LLC Student Advisory Board (or SAB for short). This board gives feedback to the LLC Advisory Board, plans social events, and guides the student experience.

The Development Series: With topics typically chosen by the SAB, these sessions focus on developing a skill that enables success. Past topics include organization / time management techniques, leadership skills building, completing personality assessments, and more!

LLC Social Events: Throughout the year we host multiple social nights, trivia nights, community competitions, holiday parties, and community service events.

Motivation Stations: Midterms and finals can be stressful especially with advanced coursework. During these times, our staff have been known to have late night pancakes, distribute snacks from a ‘treat trolly,’ and more!

While there are no attendance requirements at these events, we highly encourage everyone in the community to participate in at least 2-3 LLC events each semester and those that attend the most events are able to earn incentives throughout the year.

MEET REQUIREMENTS In order to be placed in the LLC, students must first 1) apply to the Honors College, 2) accept their offer to join the Honors College, and 3) complete their housing application. These three items must be met before you are qualified to live in the LLC. INDICATE INTEREST On the Honors College Acceptance Form and your University Housing Application you will be able to indicate interest in living in the community. We suggest that you indicate interest on both forms; however, if you indicate interest on either form we will ensure you meet the requirements of the community and assign you a room within the LLC. DUAL TIMELINES Because the timelines for Housing and the Honors College are different, it can be a little confusing. To the left you will see the timeline for the LLC assignments process. An important thing to note is that Honors College Offers will go out after the Housing priority deadlines. This means that if you want to be in the Honors LLC, you will most likely be assigned to a room outside of the LLC first. But don’t worry! We will re-assign you to the LLC once we have confirmation of your Honors College offer and acceptance. It also means we recommend you complete all steps above as soon as you are able so that we can place you in the community by May 18th.

COMMUNITY LOCATIONS & ROOM TYPES Students who join the LLC will live in Windward Commons on the Armstrong Campus or in Centennial Place on the Statesboro campus. When you indicate interest in the LLC, you will also provide your preferred room type. While we do our best to assign students to their preferred room type, it is important to note there are limited amounts of each room type in the communities. Rooms are assigned based on housing application date, student preferences, room availability, and how soon you accept an offer to join the Honors College. The sooner these items are completed, the sooner you will be placed thus the more likely you are to receive your preferred room type and roommate.

No! To be assigned to the Honors LLC you must be a member of the Honors College. But you can be a member of the Honors College without living in the Honors LLC. The two memberships are connected, yet separate. HOWEVER… We do recommend living in an LLC to all our Honors College students. We’ve found that students in the LLCs tend to have more support and an easier transition to college overall. Additionally, students in the Honors LLC members better understand and meet their Honors College requirements, and go on to gain leadership positions with the Honors Ambassadors program, the Honors College Student Organization, and Resident Advisor positions with University Housing.

Yes! Many of our Honors students also qualify for or are interested in our other RLCs. Each of the RLCs have their own culture and goals. You are free to join the one that speaks to you most. See the next page for more information on the differences between the Honors LLC and other communities.

“My experience in the Honors LLC provided me with a sense of community everytime I walked in the door. It’s a very welcoming place to be.” - Past LLC Resident

No! To be in the LLC, you must accept an offer to the Honors College AND fill out your Housing Application. Once you pay your Housing Application Fee, you are ready to be assigned a room.

No Worries! As mentioned on previous pages, the timelines for the Honors College and University Housing are different. This can be confusing, but essentially it means that you may be placed in an assignment outside of the community UNTIL we can confirm that you have accepted an offer to join the Honors College. Once this happens, we will move you into the LLC. This is one of the reasons we recommend accepting your Honors College offer as soon as you are able. Additionally, indicating interest in the LLC on your Housing Application will let us know that you are hoping to move into the community and allow us to hold a tentative place for you in the LLC until we get that confirmation and officially change your room assignment.

Because the Honors College attracts a lot of our students majoring in engineering, computing, science, mathematics, and education - prospective students sometimes do not know if they would prefer to be in a major-related LLC or the Honors LLC. Below are some of the differences between the communities. ACADEMIC LLCs The goal of these LLCs are to ensure a successful transition to college life and an understanding of your chosen career field. While the academic LLCs host plenty of social and networking events too, the programming is specifically designed to help students be academically successful, understand majors options and requirements, and gain the skills needed to achieve professional goals..

HONORS LLC The goals of the Honors LLC are based on learning more about and living a life that focus on the Honors College foundations: 1. 2. 3. 4.

Critical Sense of Inquiry Spirit of Creativity Civic Responsibility Global Perspectives.

Ultimately it is really up to you to decide which community best matches your goals, needs, desires. All of the communities are wonderful and as long as you are involved in your RLC - you’ll get something out of whichever one you choose!

“I’m so grateful that the LLC has given me so many friends! The sense of community is phenomenal and it’s helped Georgia Southern become my home.” Past LLC Resident

No! Should you choose to be in an LLC with a LLC-Designated section of First Year Experience (FYE), you’ll be released from the LLCs FYE requirement so that you can take the required Honors College-designated section of FYE. However, if there is an RLC 1000 course required in the other LLC - you must still participate in that course to be in that LLC.
