High temperatures engulf Georgia

Maui wildfires’ death toll still on the

Greek coast guard rescues 48

According to WSB-TV, the metro Atlanta area experienced smoldering heat in the third week of August. A heat advisory was put in place Sunday, August 13. Just south of the metro Atlanta area, an excessive heat warning was issued with a heat index of 105 and 112 degrees Fahrenheit. An excessive heat watch followed on Monday in the metro Atlanta area with temperatures reaching to mid 90s. The heat index estimates it will feel upwards of 110 degrees. Brief relief from the heat may be provided in the form of short scattered showers. Furthermore, northern Georgia may experience severe weather along the lines of heavy wind, rain, hail, and more.

Started by a simple brush fire, the Maui wildfire turned into one the deadliest United States wildfires to date. Due to the heavy gusts of wind caused by Hurricane Dora and the severe drought on the island, the fire went from mild to catastrophic in just a few hours. The wildfire’s death toll rose to 93 with only 3 percent of the area being fully searched according to the Associated Press. Thousands of survivors are in need of shelter, and tourists are urged to avoid the island for travel in an effort to reserve the remaining hotels for the evacuees.

On Sunday, 48 migrants were rescued off the Island of Lesbos in an inflatable boat, Greek authorities said. The boat was spotted by the coast guard who evacuated the migrants to the port of Mytilene according to ABC News. Three of the evacuees, who were in need of medical attention, were taken to the General Hospital Mytilene where they were given first aid. The migrants are hospitalized currently. The Greek coast guard stated that the inflatable boat that drifted an exceedingly large number of individuals, sank. Due to the summer sailing conditions, Greece is seeing a rise in migrant arrivals.

Long awaited Publix location opens close to campus

A

much-awaited change for students has finally been made in the form of a brand new Publix minutes away from campus. A new Publix location opened on June 21 at 572 Hank Aaron Drive, which is a short distance from Center Parc Stadium’s blue and green parking lot. These lots are accessible for parking to all students and are stops on the university’s blue and orange PantherExpress routes. The new storefront is open seven days a week from 7 a.m.-10 p.m. The accompanying pharmacy is open from 9 a.m.- 9 p.m. with reduced hours on the weekend. The Summerhill neighborhood helped welcome the new Publix location during its grand opening ceremony. Summerhill residents, Georgia State students, faculty and city officials joined the store's parking lot to commemorate the opening. The ceremony concluded with a speech by Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens and a ribbon cutting. Dickens spoke in an interview with Fox 5 Atlanta about what the opening of this Publix might mean for the rest of South Atlanta. “The south side of the city does not have many grocery stores. We are incentivizing grocers to come, and now we want to see them taken advantage of,” said Dickens.“I'm looking at Campbellton Road and Martin Luther King [Drive], Cleveland Avenue, and other southside areas”

In an Instagram post made the following day, Dickens also wrote about the impact this new Publix will have on the Summerhill neighborhood and the city. “This new addition will provide greater access to fresh food for our beloved residents in Summerhill and beyond,” Dickens wrote. “These Summerhill redevelopments started under Keisha Bottoms and continue now.” As of now, the opening of the new Publix has received a positive response. Georgia State University President Brian Blake commented on the new Publix in a statement posted to his website. “The opening of this grocery store marks a milestone in addressing a long-standing issue of food insecurity in the Summerhill neighborhood,” wrote Blake. Blake believes that the opening of this grocery store is a great step towards addressing the “food desert crisis” in the city of Atlanta. The opening of this new storefront also included a $2500 donation on behalf of Publix to Panther’s Pantry. Panther’s Pantry is a non-profit organization run at Georgia State’s Atlanta, Clarkson, Decatur and Dunwoody campuses that aims to help alleviate the burden of food insecurity for students. In a statement provided by Panther’s Pantry, they spoke about the benefits that this donation will bring to the pantry and students. “Panther's Pantry was honored to receive $2500 in support from the

new Summerhill Publix location! This financial support provided by Publix allows the pantry to purchase food and hygiene items that go directly to our Georgia State community.” The opening of this Publix location marks one of the many actions being taken towards fulfilling a decadelong promise made by lawmakers to correct issues of food insecurity within communities such as Summerhill. Food insecurity is a prominent issue facing the city of Atlanta and the state as a whole. A report published by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) revealed that in 2021 approximately 9.9% of people in Georgia suffer from food insecurity. Atlanta has the most prominent non-profit food bank in the world the Atlanta Community Food Bank. This year, statistics published by the Atlanta Community Food Bank revealed that approximately one in nine people within the food bank's 29 county service area suffer from food insecurity. The Publix sits in the newly opened Summerhill Station shopping center. Development of the 85,000-squarefoot shopping center is said to continue in the coming years, with more stores applying for building contracts and setting up for business. Some of these potential businesses include AT&T, Tropical Smoothie Cafe, Cava and Piedmont Urgent Care.

e have reached the era of record-breaking triple-digit temperatures worldwide. This has been affecting ecosystems all over, ranging from the melting ice in the Arctic to the failure of crops in many parts of the world leading to famine. The concept of sustainability has never been more important than now. Sustainability is the practice that acknowledges the limited resources we have and therefore propels us to make environmentally and economically feasible decisions and take actions that benefit society in the long term. The concept of sustainability first appeared in fictional books in the 1970s and eventually gained momentum along with climate change and grabbed the attention of the United Nations in 2015, therefore creating the 17 sustainable development goals for a better future on Earth. Given the status of our planet and the importance of sustainability, are Georgia State students and faculty doing enough to make Georgia State a sustainable campus or not? Georgia State students were surveyed and participants of different majors and classifications stated that sustainability is important to them and the majority recycle as much as they could. However, when asked if they thought Georgia State valued sustainability, 86% of them replied no or somewhat. This data indicates that students are willing to make sustainable choices on campus but the school isn’t making that easier. Georgia State has a Sustainability Initiative on campus that is making a positive impact through recycling, making things such as Panther Dining more sustainable. However, according to the survey, 54% of students aren’t aware of this program at all and 29% of students know very little about it. As an environmental activist myself, I wasn’t aware of this program until my sophomore year. I have seen the sustainability truck multiple times on campus but didn’t know what it was about. When walking

through campus, there aren’t many signs that indicate the university’s willingness to be sustainable. The university doesn’t organize consistent, engaging workshops or handson sustainability projects. Given that only 14% of students are aware of Georgia State’a sustainability initiative reflects the university's lack of effort to make sustainability a top priority. The lack of advertisements for the Sustainability Initiative robs students of the opportunity to access eco-friendly services such as shredding, packaging, the recycling of plastics, cans, food and so much more. Students are paying for these resources and it’s injustice not to make them aware of these resources. Importing items from foreign countries is one of the biggest hindrances to sustainability. I noticed many of Georgia State’s supplies such as notebooks, accessories, dorm items and much more are supplied from overseas instead of local businesses. This practice increases our carbon footprint on our suffering planet. Georgia State didn’t make it to the 2023 Princeton Review of the 50 most green campuses in the U.S. There is a lot that Georgia State can learn from the campuses on this list. We can start by having multiple recycling bins at every building because the vast majority of students are willing to recycle if provided with the resources. Secondly, the school should purchase more of its supplies from local vendors to reduce the university’s carbon footprint. Thirdly, Georgia State needs to host more educational and handson environmental activities on campus for the sustainability program to gain more participation among students. Given that Georgia State is one of the largest universities in the state, it would be a shame to not shift towards sustainability given the depressing status of our planet

e’ve all seen it: whether you were scrolling on Social Media or taking a walk down a busy street, the Barbie marketing team has done a remarkable job at assuring that everyone knows there was a Barbie movie coming out this summer. From companies such as Primark and Crocs partnering to create hot-pink ‘Barbie-core’ items ranging from shoe accessories to entire articles of clothing. All the way to Boston cruise ships setting sail with a Barbie theme to AirBnB collaborating with the construction of an entire life-sized Barbie Dreamhouse in Malibu, California, it has without a doubt been a busy couple of months for Barbie’s marketing team. However, as we reach one month since the long-awaited Barbie movie hit theaters, climate change activists are actively trying to get Barbie fans to take off their rose-tinted glasses and see the difficult reality behind the seemingly innocent and fun marketing that was making headlines worldwide. All of these Barbie collaborations are contributing to the fast fashion industry. Climate and human rights activists have been calling out the dangers of a new terminology called fast fashion for the better part of recent decades. Fast fashion can be defined as articles of clothing that are created in a cheap and poor-quality manner to meet high consumer demands for trendy items. This phenomenon has caused various activists across the globe to worry about the morality behind people supporting brands and companies that partake in the fast fashion industry due to it feasibly causing excessively harmful impacts on both a social and environmental level. For example, Zara came out with a Barbie collaboration in mid-July, selling various types of products that were inspired by current ‘Barbie-core’ trends gaining extreme popularity in social media platforms. Anagha R. Ratna, an author at India Retailing, wrote about how Zara’s collection contained “accessories, beauty products, homeware and even a signature Barbie fragrance”. Pop-up stores were also opened by Zara in both Paris and New York that celebrated the collaboration. Zara has been repeatedly called out for its unethical fast fashion practices. The owner of the compa-

ny has been under scrutiny for greenwashing as well as the mistreatment of its workers and environmental disturbances. With statistics that include Zara workers producing more than 450 million items every year and half a thousand new designs every single week, it comes as no surprise that Zara is known to be one of the sharks of the fast fashion world. The high-speed turnover rates of the items that fast fashion companies produce lead to an excessive amount of microplastics being found in the ocean – over one-third – and contribute to the production of 20% of water waste worldwide. Additionally, with 85% of clothes ending up in landfills across the world, there comes the extremely damaging environmental issue that these articles of clothing release greenhouse gasses, including carbon dioxide and Methane gas. Barbie collaborating with unsustainable companies such as Zara is not the only thing that worries activists. Greenly, a carbon-accounting platform that calculates carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, investigated to see just how large Barbie’s carbon footprint has been. The results state that Mattel, the company that produces Barbie dolls, is producing weighty amounts of plastic per year, which lead to 39,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent to greenhouse gas emissions and waste. Alexis Normand, the co-founder of Greenly, called the new Barbie movie and its marketing tactics “an ode to overconsumption”. He could not be more in the right: including the data revolving around Zara and the recent studies made by Greenly, there are also the dozens of other brands that the Barbie marketing team has chosen to collaborate with that leave activists extremely uneasy about the high levels of products that have been churned out in an attempt to capitalize off of the movie. If you are one to care for the environment and ethical consumption, keep these unsettling statistics in mind next time you pass by stores or scroll through social media. The color pink has always been in fashion, and your local thrift store is bound to have the perfect ‘Barbie-core’ outfit to represent your love for this trend-setting doll.

MERISSA WARE Staff Reporter hether you are looking for a quick bite to eat after class, a weekly supply of food and hygiene products or engaging events that provide food, there are many options that you will find on and near campus. Panther’s Pantry is a great resource for food, hygiene products and more. Panther’s Pantry’s mission is to aid the Georgia State community and ensure students can succeed academically by providing food and other supplies to Panthers in need of additional support. Once a week, any student, staff or faculty member will be able to pick up one food bag and one hygiene bag. A Panther ID is needed to receive a bag. Panther’s Pantry is located at the Atlanta campus in room 0035 of 75 Piedmont Avenue Northeast, and pantry lockers are located on the third floor of the Urban Life Building. Pantry lockers are available for pickup at all campuses, and are open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. The Georgia State Garden Volunteer Team and Panther’s Pantry work together to provide fresh food to the Georgia State community. The Georgia State Garden Volunteer Team donates the produce they grow at the Rooftop Gardens at Center Parc Stadium to Panther’s Pantry. For more information about Panther’s Pantry and how to get involved, visit their website at pantry.gsu. edu. To stay connected with Panther’s Pantry, follow their Instagram account @ pantherspantry. If students want to get something to eat right after class ends without having to walk far, there are multiple choices on and near campus. Two restaurants on Georgia State’s campus are Panda Express and Chick-Fil-A.

Panda Express is located on the first floor of Student Center East and ChickFil-A is located just outside of Student Center East. There are also many options located near campus buildings and dorms. Starbucks is a popular choice that has multiple, convenient, locations. The Starbucks on Auburn Ave NE is the closest to the dorms. This relatively new Starbucks is built for picking up mobile orders. For students who commute by train, the Waffle House on Piedmont Avenue is the closest restaurant to the Georgia State MARTA station. For students who live on campus and want to get something to eat without walking far, there are a few options. On Piedmont Ave, there is a Dunkin Donuts, Stoner’s Pizza, Checker’s and Racetrac. They are across the street from University Commons and Piedmont Central. If you are looking for a way to access groceries close to campus, the new Publix at Summerhill is just what you are looking for. The Publix had its grand opening in June. It is a couple of blocks away from Central Parc stadium and the Blue Lot. One of the best ways to find and enjoy free food on campus is to attend campus events. Panther Involvement Network will keep you updated on all of the upcoming campus events and upcoming meetings hosted by student organizations. Top 5 places to study on campus Exploring the Ideal Campus Sanctuaries: Top 5 Study Spots KAWTHAR ALASAAD

G

Staff Reporter

eorgia State’s campus holds a variety of people and places to study. A downtown campus can be overwhelming with the city's noise and busy life, especially for freshmen and new students. This guide offers a new perspective on study spots that some students aren't aware of. These unique places provide a serene environment conducive to concentration and productivity, allowing students to fully immerse themselves in their studies.

1. Library

Starting simply, a beloved spot for many students on campus is the library. Library South and Library North can easily confuse many new students, as they expect two different libraries based on the name. However, Library South and North are the same library but hold two separate entrances. There are five floors, with each floor designated for students' preferences. If a student is looking for a place to study with a bit of noise to hang out with friends, the first four floors are preferred. On the flip side, if a student is looking for a strictly quiet place, the fifth floor is considered the silent floor, which is the busiest during exam season.

2. Starbucks

The campus provides two different

Starbucks locations, which are often very busy as it is a favorite treat and place to study for many Georgia State students. One Starbucks is held in the Hurt building, which can be found right in front of the green space. The other Starbucks can be found in front of the Aderhold building. Both Starbucks locations are near classes for most students, so it is the most convenient place to visit for students to study. In addition to being conveniently located near classes, the Starbucks locations on campus offer a wide variety of beverages and snacks to fuel students during their study sessions. The cozy atmosphere and free Wi-Fi provided by Starbucks make it an ideal spot for students to relax, socialize and focus on their academic tasks.

3. Law Library

Georgia State's law library is a hidden gem that many non-law students often don't know about. The law library provides much different scenery for students; it is a taller building with serene views of the city and quiet places to study. Aside from its unique architecture and peaceful atmosphere, the law library offers an extensive collection of legal resources and research materials. Students can access a wide range of legal databases, journals and books that are essential for their studies and academic success.

4. 55 Park Place

When students hear about 55 Park Place, they often think of organizational holdings, important meetings and a parking spot, however, it offers a much greater value. 55 Park Place has various study spots that students enjoy, including a beautiful view of the campus and private rooms to rent. These study spots provide a peaceful and conducive environment for students to focus and enhance their productivity. Additionally, 55 Park Place offers amenities such as high-speed internet access and comfortable seating arrangements, further enhancing the overall study experience for students.

5. Green Space

During the warmer seasons, most students can be found in the green space, either studying or hanging out with friends. The green space allows students to study while nourishing themselves in the sun and the weather. It provides a peaceful and refreshing environment that enhances concentration and productivity. Additionally, the green space offers an excellent opportunity for students to take breaks, relax and socialize with their peers, creating a sense of community on campus.

Robinson to prove doubters wrong leading up to the new season

Home Game vs UConn @ Center Parc Stadium 09 / 09 / 23 7:00 p.m.

MATTHEW TINDLE Staff Reporter decorated final year in college had many scouts claiming Robinson was the best athlete in the 2023 draft with CBS ranking him fifth overall. Despite all this, fans and experts question the pick due to the lack of longevity at the position due to major injuries. They feel Atlanta could have received more value as many of the premier running backs in the league were selected late in the draft. Atlanta seems to recognize this problem as Bijan also shares a backfield with second-year running back Tyler Allgeier and veteran Cordarrelle Patterson, taking the workload off of the star running back with hopes of extending his career. According to coaches, the surrounding doubt has proven not to affect the 21-year-old rookie. He has been showing out in training camp with head coach Arthur Smith telling reporters he’s “Pretty damn pleased with Bijan so far, the way we use him, I think, is different than most, just philosophically with guys all over.”

Videos showing his versatility have gone viral as Robison has been seen beating linebackers and cornerbacks in one on one drills. Robison was later asked about this as he told Michael Rothstein of ESPN “Obviously, I do a lot of different things that maybe a lot of running backs are starting to do. For me, I’m a player that loves to give an opportunity to my offense, whether it’s me lining up out wide or me lining up in the slot or trying to it off to get an opportunity to maximize ourselves.” This positionless mindset in the Falcons' running back room is not new as Cordarrelle Patterson has been seen not only lining up in the backfield but out wide as well as returning kicks. Atlanta has much to look forward to this upcoming season, with Bijan Robinson poised to make an impact on the NFL and prove doubters wrong. The sports world awaits to watch the rookie running back make his debut against the Carolina Panthers in week one of the new season.

n the 2023 NFL Draft, the Atlanta Falcons surprised many by selecting Texas running back Bijan Robinson with the eighth overall pick. This decision marks the highest a running back has been drafted since 2018 when the New York Giants chose Saquon Barkley as the second overall pick. Given the extreme devaluation of the running back market, some fans and analysts have raised many doubts about the Falcons' choice to draft Robinson at such a high position, questioning why Atlanta would pick him. In his final year at Texas, Robinson rushed for 1,580 yards, 18 touchdowns and averaged 6.1 yards per carry. He showed his versatility by making 19 receptions for 314 yards and a pair of touchdowns. This led to him securing first-team All-Big 12 honors, as well as the Doak Walker Award, given to the best running back in college football, and named a unanimous All-American making him the fourth Texas running back to receive the honor.
