Program Partner Guide

Ways the Girl Scout Leadership Experience sets Girl Scouts apart

1 Know where you're going before you start. Become familiar with the five outcomes girls achieve through Girl Scouts: Develop a strong sense of self: Girls have confidence in themselves and their ability, and form positive identities. Develop positive values: Girls act ethically, honestly, and responsibly, and show concern for others. Seek Challenges: Girls learn to take appropriate risks, try things even if they might fail, and learn from their mistakes. Develop healthy relationships: Girls develop and maintain healthy relationships by communicating their feelings directly and resolving conflict constructively. Learn community problem solving: Girls contribute to the world in purposeful and meaningful ways, learn how to identify problems in the community, and create "action plans" to solve them.

2 Offer activities from the four Program Pillars. S.T.E.M.: Science, Technology, Engineering, Math: Activities help girls develop problem-solving skills and confidence to pursue these topics in school. Outdoor: Develop outdoor skills over time. This can be as simple as meeting outdoors and working toward more adventurous outdoor exploration Life Skills: Develop key life skills girls can use forever, like financial literacy, first–aid, and more. Badges are great for this!

3 Incorporate these program processes into your activities: Girl-led means girls shape their experience by asking questions, offering ideas, and using their imaginations. Learning By Doing means girls learn through hands-on activities, talking about what they did, and reflecting on how they would do it differently next time. Cooperative Learning means girls work together to brainstorm ideas and problem solve their way toward a common goal.

Entrepreneurship: Participate in the Girl Scout Cookie and Fall Product programs to build key entrepreneurial skills girls will use for a lifetime!

Aim high with Girl Scouts' Highest Awards The Girl Scout Bronze, Silver and Gold Awards are the highest honors a Girl Scout can earn. Through them, girls impact their communities, challenge themselves, and gain an edge after high school.

Gold Award

Silver Award

Bronze Award

The Girl Scout Gold Award represents the pinnacle of Girl Scout leadership progression. Open to Girl Scout Seniors and Ambassadors, this prestigious award challenges girls to change the world by solving a community problem in a innovative and sustainable way.

The Girl Scout Silver Award is the highest award a Girl Scout Cadette can achieve and gives girls a chance to work with a small team or as an individual. Girls focus on projects that make lasting change in their communities.

The Girl Scout Bronze Award is the highest award a Girl Scout Junior can earn. Girls work together as a group to complete a service project that directly benefit the Girl Scout community, or the girls’ local community or neighborhood.

Program Partner Events and Opportunities These events and opportunities, hosted by our amazing program partners, are a great way to help your girls earn badges or develop new interests and skills on many different topics. We partner with many nonprofits and businesses to offer fun and exciting opportunities in your backyard and throughout the council.

How to Register Registration for the events is managed by the Program Partner. Contact information is provided in this guide.

Open and Close Registration Dates Event open and close registration dates vary. Check with the Program Partner for details.

Who Can Attend Events

Girls Girls must be registered members who meet the Girl Scout Level recommendations for the event. However, any girl in grades K-12 who is not a currently registered Girl Scout, may register as a member and then attend Girl Scout events and activities.

Leaders Leaders or approved adults are required to attend troop events with their Girl Scouts and are responsible for ensuring the safety and behavior management of the girls. Program Partner facilitators are not counted in ratio for the girls.

Girls Attending Without Troops There may be instances where a Girl Scout wants to attend an activity but the troop is unable to do so. Some Partner events or activities will allow for a Girl Scout to attend with a parent/guardian as a chaperone, instead of a troop. Contact the Partner for verification.

Ticket Discounts As a membership benefit, Girl Scouts of Western Ohio is excited to partner with organizations in our community to provide discounts and promotions throughout our regions. Check out the list of upcoming special ticket prices, Girl Scout days, and more here: gswo.org/tickets

Patch Programs Girl Scouts of Western Ohio has several patch programs that girls can participate in by completing the requirements. Check these out: gswo.org/badges

Holiday Crafts Workshop for Girl Scouts

Learn the history and mystery of Ohio’s oldest sweet, maple sugar! We tap maple trees, collect sap, and learn how to turn it into that yummy stuff we all know so well. Please review our current policies regarding COVID-19, most notably all participants must wear a mask when indoors and when 6"" distance cannot be maintained in an outdoor setting.

Bring your scout troop to LaBoiteaux Woods to enjoy crafts made with natural materials. Nature provides the media and inspiration for creating amazing crafts. Registration is online and required by November 28.

This is a troop event, please no siblings. Due to the popularity of this event, we request that troops only bring the minimum required adults for the adult to scout ratio as noted in the Girl Scout Guidelines. In each class the girls learn how to strike effectively and have the opportunity to break boards to show their effective attacks. We will discuss open communication with trusted adults and girls will practice using their voice to speak for themselves and others. Playground: K-8 Here girls will focus on learning to escape from grabs while not injuring the offending child. Girls will practice and role-play playground bully situations. High School: 9-12 Here we prepare girls for real world situations where they need to escape and defend themselves. An ideal class as girls prepare to leave high school. NMGL Scout Visit

Nature's Nursery Outreach Program

Experience the powerful history of the Great Lakes by touring our expansive and hands-on exhibits, our 617–foot lake freighter and our historic tugboat. Along the way, learn about some of the Great women of the Great Lakes, like Abigail Becker who risked her life to rescue sailors shipwrecked near her home in the 1850s.

We care for 30 education animal ambassadors that cannot return to their home in the wild. Many of these animals are permanently injured while others were illegal taken from their habitat and surrendered to Nature's Nursery. These animals help us educate thousands of people each year and serve as ambassadors for their own species and for wildlife everywhere. We have a wide variety of birds of prey, mammals, reptiles, amphibians that can assist you in completing badge requirements!
