What sets us apart? The Girl Scout Program!
Have you ever wondered: “How do I build girls of courage, confidence, and character?” The answer is as simple as 1-2-3!
1
Know where you're going before you start:
Become familiar with the five outcomes we want girls to achieve through Girl Scouts:
Develop a Strong Sense of Self: Girls have confidence in themselves and their abilities, and form positive identities.
2
Promote
Positive Values: Girls act ethically, honestly, and responsibly, and show concern for others.
Seek Challenges: Girls learn to take appropriate risks, try things even if they might fail, and learn from their mistakes.
Foster Healthy Relationships: Girls develop and maintain healthy relationships by communicating their feelings directly and resolving conflict constructively.
Learn Community Problem Solving: Girls contribute to the world in purposeful and meaningful ways, learn how to identify problems in the community, and create “action plans”to solve them.
Offer activities from the four Program Pillars:
S.T.E.M.: Science, Technology, Engineering, Math: Activities help girls develop problemsolving and critical thinking skills to build their confidence.
3
Outdoor:
Develop outdoor skills over time. This can be as simple as meeting outdoors and working toward more adventurous outdoor exploration.
Life Skills: Develop key life skills girls can use forever, like financial literacy, first–aid, and more. Badges are great for this!
Entrepreneurship: Participate in the Girl Scout Cookie and Fall Product programs to build key entrepreneurial skills girls will use for a lifetime! See the back cover of this guide for more information.
Incorporate these program processes into your activities:
Girl Led:
Girls shape their experience by asking questions, offering ideas, and using their imaginations.
Learning By Doing:
Girls learn through hands-on activities, talking about what they did, and reflecting on how they would do it differently next time.
Cooperative Learning: Girls work together to brainstorm ideas and problem solve their way toward a common goal.
Make your experience even better!
• Host family-friendly events and a caregiver meeting.
• Connect parents to the Volunteer Toolkit, so they can see what girls are doing each meeting.
• See page 11 for other family-friendly events.
• Badges: Girls build skills
• Journeys: Girls build skills, learn, and then take action to make the world a better place.
• Awards: Girls earn these on a variety of topics including leadership and mentoring.
• Support girls in earning one of the Highest Awards: Bronze, Silver, and Gold
• Attend a Girl Scout event in your local service unit to meet other Girl Scouts.
• Attend a council-sponsored event. This book is full of them!
• Attend a community partner event.
• Learn about the history of Girl Scouts.
• Set up a meeting where younger girls learn from older Girl Scouts.
• Practice Girl Scout traditions and allow girls to create their own, by incorporating:
– The Girl Scout Promise and Law into all activities
– Meaningful, girl-planned ceremonies, like bridging and court of awards
– Girl Scout Spirit—Wear Girl Scout uniforms at meetings, events and on field trips
a
• Help girls explore their community through service and take-action projects.
Make it Happen! A handy troop checklist.
Here are 10 essential things you can do to make your troop year a success!
● Host an investiture ceremony/parent meeting at the beginning of the year. Let the girls do the planning, and invite the whole family to attend!
● Let the girls help plan the year. What do they want to earn? Where do they want to go?
●
Start each meeting with the Girl Scout Promise and Law. Ask girls to share examples of how they have used the Promise and Law in their lives since the last meeting.
● Set a plan to earn badges. Events in this book can help you or visit the Volunteer Toolkit
● Attend a council-sponsored event to try new things and meet other Girl Scouts.
● Attend a community-sponsored event to explore your community and connect with experts.
● Complete a Girl Scout Journey, including the take-action project at the end.
●
Participate in the cookie program to build to your troop budget to achieve the girls’ goals. Don’t forget about the Fall Product Program, too!
●
Get girls outdoors! Do an age appropriate outdoor experience or just go for a hike in a local park or meet outside. Check out the events in this book to get you started.
●
Recognize girls’ accomplishments. Host a bridging event or a court of awards ceremony at the end of the year. Invite the whole family, and let the girls take the lead.
These events are hosted by amazing community partners, who focus activities on the Girl Scout leadership program. Leaders (or other approved adults) are required to attend events with their troop and are responsible for ensuring the safety of the girls. Community partner facilitators are never counted in ratio for the girls.
Registration for these events is managed by the community partner. Contact information is included in community-sponsored event listings.
• Community-sponsored events open and close dates may vary. Please check with the community partner for exact dates.
These events are led by staff, community partners, or volunteers. Leaders or other approved adults are required to attend events with their troop (unless otherwise specified) and are responsible for ensuring the safety of the girls.
Registration for these events is managed through the council website at gswo.org/events
* Remember to use zip code 45242 when searching for virtual events.
• August 7, 2024: Registration opens for program events in September-December.
• November 6, 2024: Registration opens for program events in January-August, unless otherwise noted.
• Council-sponsored events will close two weeks prior to the event, unless otherwise noted. Check the online registration page for exact closing dates. If the event you are registering for has already closed, you can call the contact person listed to see if there are any additional spots left in the activity.
• Parents may attend any one-day event with their Girl Scout! Any parents chaperoning are only responsible for their own child.
• All overnights require an approved volunteer.
Once you have registered for an event, you can access confirmation information any time, by logging into your MyGS account and clicking on “My Activities.” Under each event name, you’ll find an attachment with confirmation information. Note: Only the person who makes the event reservation can see this in their My Activities tab.
Girls must be registered members who meet the Girl Scout grade-level recommendations for the event. However, any girl in grades K-12, who is not a currently registered Girl Scout, may register as a member and attend events and activities.
Leaders, or other approved adults, are required to attend events with their troop and are responsible for ensuring the safety of the girls unless otherwise noted.
Unless otherwise noted, Girl Scouts can attend most council program events without a troop. Caregivers must chaperone and be responsible for their Girl Scout at an event. All overnights require adults to be approved volunteers which requires active membership and background check.
There are certain events that guardians and siblings can also join in the fun. Find those great events in this Event Guide!
• In order to receive a refund, a written request must be received 30 days prior to the event date.
• No refunds will be given after the cancellation deadline with the following exceptions:

– Illness or Accident: Refundable with a physician's statement.

“I learned many lessons regarding teamwork. For every challenge we had, we were split into teams of three or our entire team got to do it for missions… One thing Ken Cameron continuously mentioned was that teamwork was the most important part of space missions, and without it, the team most likely wouldn’t succeed.”
