A New Year Begins
Basic Girl Scout Terms Girl Scout Lingo
Happy 110th Girl Scout year! As Girl Scouts begins its 110th year, we look forward to sharing with you the many wonderful traditions that have been carried through the decades, and providing new and evolving opportunities that support girls in today’s world while preparing them for tomorrow’s. One constant thread through the years is that Girl Scouts is a safe place for girls to share their hopes, fears, and individual experiences, building bonds of sisterhood that carry them through good days and bad. For this reason, we continue to work for racial justice and equality in our organization and our world. We continue to educate ourselves, and have the difficult conversations so that all girls feel welcome and have a sense of belonging, because the unique spirit of each and every girl is woven into the dynamic fabric of who we are as an organization. This past year taught us that coming together, learning, and sharing with others has never been more important. By joining the Girl Scout family, your girl will explore and grow and connect in ways that will push her to do more than she thinks possible. Together with you and her new sisters, she will discover her special way of making the world a better place!
Roni Luckenbill Chief Executive Officer
Welcome, new Girl Scouts!
When I earned my first STEM badge, I didn’t realize that one day I would attend Space Academy. When I planted my first flower garden,
I never imagined it would lead me to a service immersion trip in Costa Rica. Girl Scout Destinations made these possible. Girl Scouts has given me the confidence to be out on my own. Girl Scouting has also taught me to be humble, to build others up, and to not take a single experience for granted. Whatever journey you choose to embark on, I hope that Girl Scouts brings adventure, friendship, and joy!
Kaitlyn Lott Girl Scout Ambassador & Member of the GSWO Board of Directors
Daisies. Grades K–1 Brownies. Grades 2–3 Juniors. Grades 4–5 Cadettes. Grades 6–8 Seniors. Grades 9–10 Ambassadors. Grades 11–12 As you advance in school, you’ll move up to the next age level. Girls have the opportunity to “bridge” and hold a ceremony to mark the occasion!
• Juliettes: In honor of our founder, this term refers to Girl Scouts who are not part of a troop. Juliettes earn badges and participate in all activities that Girl Scouts has to offer.
Girl Scout Motto
• Troop Leader: A registered Girl Scout adult, and background-checked and trained volunteer who meets regularly with girls to help them achieve the purposes of Girl Scouting.
Girl Scout Slogan
• Uniform: Girl Scouts typically wear a tunic, sash, or vest to display official pins, awards, badges, and patches. Our organizational structure: • GSUSA: Girl Scouts of the USA, the national organization that supports and promotes the Girl Scout movement. • Council (Girl Scouts of Western Ohio): A corporation chartered by GSUSA that manages Girl Scouting within a geographic region. • Service Unit: Geographic unit of troops/ groups within a council that provides programs and services to girls and adults.

Any girl in grades K–12 can join the fun at Girl Scouts. Whether you want to be part of a troop, sign up for exciting events, explore the outdoors, or travel the world, each Girl Scout level (based on your grade in school) has something for you.
• Friendship Circle: Representing the unbroken chain of friendship among Girl Scouts and Girl Guides around the world, Girl Scouts stand in a circle, cross their right arms over their left, and clasp hands with their friends on both sides. Everyone then makes a silent wish as a friendship squeeze is passed from hand to hand around the circle. • Troop: A group of girls and adults who meet on a regular basis to engage in Girl Scout Program activities. Troops are organized according to “Grade Level” which places girls together with others in the same social/ developmental stage.
In Girl Scouting,
Whether you’ve been in in Girl Scouts for years or are just starting your journey, the opportunities are endless! I’m in a troop with the same five girls I started with 13 years ago. We’ve had sleepovers, gone camping, road-tripped to Savannah, and spent spring break in NYC. We’ve been through moves, new schools, celebrations, sorrow, and even a pandemic. Most importantly, we have been through it all together as a Girl Scout family.
• Girl Scout Sign: Official Girl Scout greeting. The right hand is raised shoulder high with the three middle fingers extended and the thumb crossing over the palm to hold down the little finger.

Do a good turn daily.
On the cover How sweet it was to be together at camp again! After a summer off, Girl Scouts once again slept under the stars, sang songs, did skits, and made s’mores over the camp fire. Whether at Day Camp, Resident Camp, or Troop Adventure Camp, hundreds of longlasting memories were made!

The Girl Scout Leadership Experience
Girl Scouts grows with her
Setting girls up for a lifetime of success
Special opportunities for older girls
With the support of caring adults, Girl Scout programming follows distinct and deliberate processes that progressively, over the years, teach girls to have a voice, respect others, and learn how to take action on things that are important to them.
Cadettes, Seniors and Ambassadors (CSA) have a number of exclusive opportunities. From CSA Clubs and meet-ups to Girl Scout Destinations and councilsponsored trips, girls in grades 6-12 can create their own Girl Scout experience! Plus, with CSA Con (north and south) there are two entire weekend conferences just for girls this age.

Girls achieve five key outcomes as they progress through Girl Scouts:
Girls take part in activities from four Program Pillars:
Girl Scout activities include three Program Processes:
Develop a strong sense of self Girls have confidence in themselves and their ability, and form positive identities.
S.T.E.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) Activities help girls develop problemsolving skills and confidence to pursue these topics in school.
Girl-led Girls shape their experience by asking questions, offering ideas, and using their imaginations.
Develop positive values Girls act ethically, honestly, and responsibly, and show concern for others. Seek Challenges Girls learn to take appropriate risks, try things even if they might fail, and learn from their mistakes. Develop healthy relationships Girls develop and maintain healthy relationships by communicating their feelings directly and resolving conflict constructively. Learn community problem solving Girls contribute to the world in purposeful and meaningful ways, learn how to identify problems in the community, and create "action plans" to solve them.
Outdoor Develop outdoor skills over time. This can be as simple as meeting outdoors and working toward more adventurous outdoor exploration. Life Skills Develop key life skills girls can use forever, like financial literacy, first–aid, and more. Badges are great for this!
Learning By Doing Girls learn through hands-on activities, talking about what they did, and reflecting on how they would do it differently next time. Cooperative Learning Girls work together to brainstorm ideas and problem solve their way toward a common goal.
Entrepreneurship Participate in the Girl Scout Cookie and Fall Product programs to build key entrepreneurial skills girls will use for a lifetime!

Teresa, a Girl Scout leader, reflects on a decade of Girl Scouts The 2020 Girl Scout year didn’t look anything like it had in the past. Due to COVID-19, our troop faced many obstacles both as a troop, and in our personal lives. But Girl Scouts gave us the connections we needed to keep going. My troop went from meeting weekly in-person to finishing out their cookie sales virtually to shattered dreams of heading to Orlando for the 2020 Girl Scout Convention. We tried Zoom meetings, but that was challenging to keep the girls focused. With the community in need of facemasks, we did complete a service project and donated masks to the heroes working throughout the pandemic. As we approached the summer, my daughter Jordyn and I joined fellow Girl Scout sisters and another mother-daughter duo for a weekend camping trip. From campfire meals, tie-dying t-shirts, ghost hunting, friendship rock searching, kayaking, to stargazing and seeing the Milky Way, being outdoors with friends was just what we needed after all the ups and downs of the pandemic. The experiences that Jordyn and I have gotten to experience over the last 10 years have been amazing. Girl Scouts have helped us both grow as a person. Especially pulling us out of our shells and becoming more outgoing with high confidence. We have turned many friendships into lifelong sisters.
Help her plan her adventures Girls have many opportunities to learn new skills, try new things, meet new people, and earn Girl Scout awards through program events. Girls in grades K-12 who meet the event’s Girl Scout grade-level recommendations can attend with their troop, or on their own with a caregiver chaperone! Friends are welcome to join: Any girl who is not a current Girl Scout may register as a member and attend events and activities. Find activities and registration details at gswo.org/events. We add events and open registration on a rolling basis, so check in often.

Maximize your Girl Scout Experience with Product Program
Aim High with Girl Scouts Highest Awards The Girl Scout Gold, Silver, and Bronze Awards are the highest honors a Girl Scout can earn. Through them, girls impact their communities, challenge themselves, and gain an edge after high school.
Product Programs: the key to more adventures During the Fall Product and Cookie Programs, girls learn the value of a dollar, how to budget, the difference between needs and wants, how to make tough decisions, and how to set big goals, all while remembering to be honest and fair. Girls begin to practice the skills they need for a financially independent future. They also learn to work as a team to accomplish common goals and solve problems, while building their confidence. Building this entrepreneurial mindset creates long-term benefits that many business owners credit as the start of their success!
In the short-term, girls love earning the fun mascot-themed rewards, and seeing their earnings add up! Parents and caregivers love that participating in product programs also helps girls earn Digital Dough – which can be used to attend programs, register for summer camp, and/or buy uniforms or camp supplies at the Girl Scout Shop. So help her set her goals and make a plan to achieve them – she’ll gain those lifelong skills and reap those immediate rewards!
Coming this year:
Open to Girl Scout Seniors and Ambassadors, the prestigious Gold Award challenges girls to change the world by solving a community problem in an innovative and sustainable way.
Working in a team or as an individual, Girl Scout Cadettes earn the Silver Award by focusing on projects that make lasting change in their communities.
Girl Scout Juniors, working together as a group, earn the Bronze Award by completing a local service project.

Cookie Program
How cookies fueled our troop’s adventure Troop 4023, a Brownie troop in Clermont County, worked hard this winter to sell cookies, then rewarded themselves with an awesome summer outing! Using some of the same skills learned in the Cookie Program, the girls set a goal to take their first camping trip at a local state park. They planned the activities and menu, budgeting from their cookie proceeds to pay for everything.
Make memories at GSWO camps and properties Many Girl Scouts say camp is their favorite Girl Scout activity. There, girls discover the wonders of nature, challenge themselves to reach new heights, and reinforce friendships for a lifetime. Summer camp registration begins in January, and you can choose from a variety of options to get outdoors and have great adventures with friends old and new! Plus, troops can enjoy many outdoor opportunities at our six camp properties and make use of our four Service Centers for Girl Scout activities. Meet our camps and make a reservation at camp.gswo.org/properties. Learn more about our Service Center spaces and the reservation processes at gswo.org/properties.
Inspired by this year’s Cookie Mascot, the girls used their profits to pay for a horse riding experience. They learned how to care for horses and helped with the afternoon chores at the stables.

I became a Girl Scout Daisy troop leader “by accident.” I signed up as an assistant only because without one, there wouldn’t have been a troop, and I needed to get my daughter connected at her new school. I was just the “placeholder,” until a “real” leader could be found. But I just kept showing up—and started contributing. Looking back, Girl Scouts engineered a pathway for friends and community that Geneva and I needed at a difficult time in our lives. My daughter and I bonded; she proudly proclaimed to everyone how I was her Girl Scout leader.

Mr. Chuck, the Accidental Daisy leader
By volunteering with Girl Scouts and stepping outside my comfort zone, I am echoing what we teach our Daisies about courage, confidence, and character—and reaping the rewards of those efforts. At the end of the year a quiet Daisy handed me a note written in crayon, “Mr. Chuck, thank you for being our Daisy leader.” I’m not gonna lie—I absolutely bawled.
