GUILFORD TECHNICAL COMMUNITY COLLEGE
May 11, 2017
Guilford Technical Community College Guilford Technical Community College was established in 1958 as the Guilford Industrial Education Center. It opened to train residents for jobs created by rapid manufacturing growth during the early 1950s. The Center occupied the site of the former Guilford County Tuberculosis Sanatorium (1924-1955). Today, the sole remaining structure from the Sanatorium is the gazebo on the front lawn of GTCC’s main campus in Jamestown. Guilford Technical Community College is a comprehensive, public twoyear college accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. The College focuses on training and retraining Guilford County’s workforce, and preparing students for further education. GTCC offers more than 61 programs of study leading to associate degrees, certificates or diplomas, hundreds of professional development and personal enrichment courses, adult education classes, and corporate training for business and industry. GTCC's open door admissions policy means that no adult is denied admission to the College. The College will help every applicant choose the appropriate courses or program of study. The fourth largest of the N.C. Community College System’s 58 institutions, GTCC serves approximately 35,000 students annually. Five campuses include the main location at Jamestown and additional locations in Greensboro, High Point and Colfax. In addition, the Aviation Campus in Greensboro includes three specialized aviation centers, and the College operates two small business centers. Union Square Campus, Inc., a partnership campus with UNC Greensboro, North Carolina A&T University and Cone Health, opened for nursing program classes in Fall 2016. While the majority of GTCC’s credit students are from Guilford County, the College also enrolls students from surrounding counties, several states and more than 22 foreign countries.

Academic Apparel American academic dress originated in the garments worn at medieval British universities, particularly Oxford, which was founded in the 12th century. Chancellors at Oxford were representatives of the bishop, and because of that close connection between university and church, students and faculty wore clerical dress. The mortarboard cap came into use during the 16th century. Authorities differ on its origin. Some say the cap is square like a scholar’s books; some say it is patterned after the shape of the Oxford campus. A black tassel signifies holders of bachelor’s and master’s degrees. The tassel may be gold for doctoral degrees and the governing offices of educational institutions. Caps and gowns have been used in American schools since colonial times, but widespread movement for their use began in 1885. By 1895, the Intercollegiate Commission had prepared a code for academic costume that was approved by 95 percent of the American universities and colleges. Individuals in an academic procession usually wear regalia appropriate to their highest degree. Variations to this procedure are authorized only for members of boards of trustees – who may wear doctoral gowns but whose hoods must be appropriate to the degrees they actually hold – and for an individual who is the official representative of an institution. There are several types of gowns. Bachelor’s gowns are black with long, pointed sleeves. Master’s degree holders wear black gowns with a long, closed sleeve with an arc near the bottom and a slit for the arm. Doctoral gowns are usually black with full, round, open sleeves and front. The color of the velvet trim may be black or the same color as the velvet that edges the hood. Some institutions have authorized doctoral gowns in their school colors. The gray gown has been accepted for use by graduates of colleges offering less than a bachelor’s degree. The hood is worn at the back, suspended near the shoulders. The bachelor’s degree hood is three feet long, with a two-inch velvet border; the master’s degree hood is three and a half feet long with a three-inch border; the doctoral hood is four feet long with a five-inch border. The inner lining of the hood is the official color or colors of the institution conferring the degree. The color of the border indicates the field of learning in which the degree is earned.
