A Message from the PRESIDENT
Dear GTCC Community and Supporters,
I am delighted to share the extraordinary milestones we have achieved this past year at Guilford Technical Community College. Thanks to your support, GTCC has not only grown but reached new heights in our mission to transform lives through People, Pathways, and Partnerships.
These achievements reflect the collective dedication of our faculty, staff, donors, industry partners, and community leaders who continually invest in the future of our students and the broader community.
One of the year’s most notable accomplishments was our remarkable enrollment growth, making GTCC the third-largest community college in North Carolina. With over 30,000 students enrolled, this milestone underscores the strength of our Guided Pathways model, which has been instrumental in expanding access, increasing student persistence, and guiding students toward their academic and career aspirations. Initiatives like the Access Amazing Scholarship, which awarded over $403,000 to Guilford County high school graduates, have made higher education more accessible than ever, opening doors to brighter futures.
Our commitment to workforce development is as robust as ever, exemplified by the plans for a $56 million, 100,000-square-foot aviation training center. This state-of-the-art facility will train the next generation of aviation professionals right here in the Triad, ensuring GTCC continues to meet the rising demand in this thriving industry. Vital partnerships with local employers like HAECO Americas, Honda Aircraft Company, Marshall Aerospace, and Boom Supersonic have been key to shaping these opportunities, and we look forward to the continued success of our aviation programs as they drive economic growth in our region.
Additionally, we are proud to celebrate the achievements of our North Carolina Federation for Advanced Manufacturing Education (NC FAME) cohort, which has set a new standard in advanced manufacturing
education. This innovative program combines classroom learning with hands-on training, offering students a debt-free associate degree and direct employment opportunities with esteemed partners like Toyota NC, Jowat Adhesives, Ziehl-Abegg, P&G, and Masterbrand. The success of this program is a powerful example of how partnerships between education and industry create pathways to high-demand, high-wage careers for our students.
None of these accomplishments would have been possible without the generosity of our donors. This year, the GTCC Foundation raised a record-breaking $1.5 million, directly supporting our students, employees, and the community. Donor contributions have allowed us to expand scholarships, enhance the student and employee experience, and provide essential program support. Be sure to explore the details of this historic year on page 20. Philanthropy plays a critical role in our college’s success, enabling us to make a lasting impact not just on our students, but on the entire community.
As we look ahead, I am filled with gratitude and optimism for all that we have accomplished together. With your continued support, we can build on this momentum and create even greater opportunities for our students to thrive. Thank you for being an essential part of this journey and for your commitment to Make Amazing Happen at Guilford Technical Community College.
Sincerely,
Dr. Tony Clarke President, Guilford Technical Community College

GTCC Students Earn 5 Medals and Top-10 Finishes at SkillsUSA National
Our students proudly claimed four silver medals and one bronze medal at the 60th National SkillsUSA competition held in Atlanta, GA. The event saw participation from over 6,000 students across the United States, including more than 500 from North Carolina. GTCC students excelled, with six participants placing in the top three and 13 students finishing in the top 10, contributing to North Carolina’s fourth-place rank in overall medals.
GTCC students won 16 first-place awards and seven second-place awards at SkillsUSA North Carolina state competitions at locations throughout the Triad from April 11-24. Their strong showing in multiple categories showcased GTCC’s dedication to hands-on learning and excellence in skilled trades and technical education.
FAME Students Won Big at National Manufacturing Competition
Shackti Martinez and Muhammad Abu Khass shone at the national FAME USA conference in Fort Worth, Texas, winning the Manufacturing Core Exercise (MCE) competition. Their presentation, focusing on Workplace Organization/5S, showcased their first-year learnings in the program. The duo, part of GTCC’s inaugural FAME class, impressed the voting audience with their efforts, securing first place despite limited preparation time. Both students were thrilled with the experience, earning $250 each and gaining recognition for their outstanding teamwork.
I was confident that we would win first place. My teammate, Shackti, was incredibly helpful.
Celebrating Student Excellence: GTCC Honored Over 30 Award Winners
GTCC held its annual Student Excellence Awards Ceremony, where over 30 students were recognized for their academic achievements, community involvement, and co-curricular contributions. GTCC President Anthony Clarke, Ph.D. praised the dedication and perseverance of the students, many of whom overcame significant challenges in their educational journeys. Among the distinguished awardees is Joanne Martin, who received the North Carolina Community College System (NCCCS) Academic Excellence Award for her exceptional
performance in the Humanities and Social Services program. Her achievement exemplifies the commitment to excellence that GTCC nurtures in its students.
The ceremony also celebrated a range of awards, including the Dr. Dallas Herring Achievement Award, SkillsUSA National Awards, and various service and perseverance honors, showcasing the diverse talents and dedication of GTCC students.
JOANNE
MARTIN OVERCOMES ADVERSITY TO WIN ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE AWARD
Joanne Martin, a 52-year-old nursing student at GTCC, overcame personal and family hardships, including her husband’s COVID-related heart attack and her parents’ declining health, to pursue her dream of becoming a nurse. Despite these challenges, she persevered and is now on track to graduate while being honored with the prestigious NCCCS Academic Excellence Award.
A New Location for The Center for Academic Engagement
The Center for Academic Engagement (CAE) relocated to the first floor of the Sears Applied Technologies building, making it more accessible for students. The expanded 11,000-square-foot area allows for longer hours and more tutoring staff.
In fall 2023, the CAE supported over 1,500 students with in-person, online, and embedded tutoring. The center also provides essential academic support for students facing challenges, ensuring a more successful college experience.
Cybersecurity Prodigy Mojo Ariunaa Earned Silver in National Competition
At just 17, Munkhtsetseg “Mojo” Ariunaa has already made a name for herself in cybersecurity. Originally from Mongolia, she’s pursuing an associate in science degree and plans to transfer to a four-year university.
Drawn to cybersecurity for its problem-solving and code-cracking challenges, she competed in the National Cyber League (NCL) competition, placing second in the individual games out of nearly 8,000 participants.
Mojo’s success has fueled her ambition to become a cybersecurity investigator and advocate for women in STEM, as she continues to push boundaries and inspire others.
How Azadeh Hazemi Transformed Her Career and Confidence
Azadeh Hazemi arrived in the U.S. as a refugee from Iran, uncertain about her future. After years in lower-wage jobs, she discovered GTCC through World Relief, the organization that helped her resettle. Hazemi enrolled in GTCC’s supply chain management program, gaining valuable skills for a high-demand field. The college also offered English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) courses, boosting her confidence. After graduating in 2022, she secured a job as a shipping clerk and was promoted to schedule planner. Now, she is pursuing her bachelor’s degree at UNC Greensboro.
GTCC helped me find myself, my abilities, and gave me a lot of confidence to talk to people and learn how to communicate with them.
Student-Athletes Honored for Academic and Athletic Excellence
GTCC celebrated its student athletes’ academic and athletic accomplishments during the annual banquet recognizing their hard work in the fall, winter, and spring seasons.
A total of 19 student-athletes were honored for their achievements, with standout recognition going to one student named to the All-Region 10 second team in women’s basketball. In addition, nine athletes earned spots on the prestigious National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Region 10 All-Academic Team for the fall semester. To be eligible for the NJCAA Region 10 All-Academic Team, student-athletes must have competed in a fall sport, maintained a 3.0 GPA, and passed at least 12 credit hours.
This year’s honorees included volleyball players Riley Blake, Mallory Duggins, and Carson Simmerson; women’s basketball players Bentlee Chockley, LeAsia Matthews, Kayla Reynolds, and Ariel Williams; and men’s basketball players Aiden Daves and Dylan Miller. Chockley was also named to the All-Region 10, second team, for women’s basketball.
Titans Claim No. 1 Spot in the U.S. for Esports
In just its second year, GTCC’s esports program claimed a National Junior College Athletic Association Esports (NJCAAE) national championship, with its Rainbow Six Siege team ranked No. 1 in the country. The championship match against Trinity Valley Community College was a grueling six-hour contest that began at 10 p.m. on December 1 and concluded at 3:58 a.m. the next morning.
The Titans defeated Trinity Valley 3-2 in an intense battle, overcoming a team that had previously bested GTCC in a regional tournament before Thanksgiving. This victory came on the heels of a challenging semifinal win against Wichita State, demonstrating the team’s remarkable endurance and skill.
The program has quickly grown, fielding 10 teams this season, with five advancing to the national tournament. The team’s success reflects their incredible dedication, balancing school, work, and esports while achieving national recognition. Enthusiasm for the future of esports remains high, as the program continues to positively impact students.

Veterans Resource Center Eases the Transition to Academic Success
GTCC’s Veterans Resource Center (VRC) is a crucial hub for veterans adjusting to academic life. Located in the Medlin Campus Center, the VRC provides a quiet space to study, connect with other veterans, and access resources like VA benefit guidance and computers for coursework. For Navy veteran Justin Tyler, the VRC became a place of comfort between classes, where he could share stories and experiences with fellow veterans who “got him.” Marine Corps veteran Joshua Cherry also found valuable support there, using the center’s resources to navigate his benefits and feel a sense of belonging. With its welcoming environment, the VRC helps veterans transition smoothly and succeed in college.
I love the camaraderie they have in the resource center. The staff makes everyone feel welcome…It was a very easy transition. I definitely feel like I’m part of the student body.
Army Veteran’s Engineering Journey Leads to Graduation Success
Bret Crissman fulfilled a lifelong dream by enlisting in the Army before finishing high school. After serving two years as a drone mechanic, Crissman pursued his passion for engineering. His military experience guided him to an associate degree in mechanical engineering technologies. During his studies, Crissman worked in financial aid, assisting fellow veterans and students.
Now, with his degree complete, Crissman is set to enter the workforce, applying his technical skills to 3D design and engineering, ready for the next chapter of his career.
Marine Corps Veteran Finds Purpose in Law Enforcement
Joshua Cherry’s dedication to planning has guided him through significant life transitions. After graduating high school in 2019, he joined the Marine Corps, serving for four years before charting his next path. Determined to help others, Cherry enrolled in GTCC’s Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET) program even before leaving the military. “I love helping people,” he says, reflecting on his decision to pursue law enforcement, a family tradition.
Cherry began his BLET training in January and graduated in May, quickly securing a position with North Carolina Central University’s police force. His journey was supported by GTCC’s Veterans Resource Center, which provided guidance and community.

GTCC and High Point Arts Council’s Collaborative Community Concert Band
In 2023, GTCC formed a partnership with the High Point Arts Council to establish the Titan Civic Band, a community concert band uniting students, faculty, staff, and local residents. This collaboration addressed the college’s desire to expand its music program while fulfilling the council’s goal of organizing a community ensemble. Rehearsals and performances are held at the Centennial Station Arts Center, housed in the historic High Point Train Station.
During its inaugural 2023-24 season, the band maintained a steady membership of around 50 musicians and performed three concerts. Looking ahead, the 2024-25 season is planned with two concerts in the Fall and two in the Spring. The initiative provides musicians an opportunity to participate in a concert band, enriching their musical experience.
