ARTS & CRAFTS Oil Painting This course is designed to teach the fundamentals of traditional oil painting techniques. The genre of still life painting will be featured, as well as drawing basics when working from life, and time-honored methods and materials unique to oil painting. Basket Making This course is designed to teach basic to advanced level basketry techniques and terms included dyeing and weaving with reed. Weaving with painted paper is also available. First-time students will start with a reed basket and can move on from there. Participants may complete two to three baskets in one session. Please bring to class a basin, spray bottle, small screw driver, measuring tape, pencil, towel and heavy-duty scissors. There will be an extra cost for materials.

A career as a Customer Service Representative spans many industries; call centers, retail, sales, hospitality, food services, and other office environments. This course is designed to provide students with the work-ready skills needed to effectively connect with customers. Students will be taught skills to meet customer needs, how to evaluate and resolve complaints from customers in a positive way, and ways to satisfy and retain customers.

North Carolina Families Accessing Services through Technology (NC FAST) is a program designed to improve the way the NC Department of Health and Human Services and county departments of social services do business. NC FAST introduces new technological tools and business processes that will enable workers to spend less time on administrative tasks and more time assisting families. This course is for individuals interested in residential electrical wiring. It offers the knowledge and skills necessary for career pathways in the electrical trade. The course is designed to cover the principles of electrical wiring as it applies to residential applications.

This is the required course you need in preparation to become a “provisional broker”. This course covers basic real estate principles and practices, including real estate law, contracts, brokerage practices, financing, closing, valuation, fair housing, property management, taxation, and mathematics as well as other related topics. To qualify for the IN-CLASS final exam, students MUST have a combined average score of 80% on the seven weekly tests given during class. High School Equivalency (HSE)

This program is for adults 18 and older who want to earn a high school diploma. Courses are taught in a lab setting. Students must provide an official transcript from the last school attended, maintain strict attendance, and complete 24 credit-bearing courses to receive a diploma.

This self-paced, flexible program prepares adults age 16 and older to earn a High School Equivalency Diploma (GED or HiSet Diploma), accepted as a high school equivalency by most employers and college admissions offices. Students must pass four subject on the GED test: Reasoning through Language Arts, Social Studies, Science and Math. Students must pass these 5 subjects on HiSet and TASC tests: Reading, Writing, Science, Social Studies and Math.

Adult Basic Education (ABE) The ABE program helps adults improve basic reading, math and writing skills. You may enroll at any time during the semester. Students with intellectual disabilities (Compensatory Education students) are served in the ABE program, dependent upon their assessment scores.

When to Register

You may register for a course up to the first day of class, but late registration is discouraged to be sure you get the course(s) you want. You may not be allowed to enter classes after the starting date.

Students in all continuing education classes will be assessed a $5 CAPS fee to help cover expenses associated with providing campus access, parking and security at the college.

After You Register

Some programs require malpractice insurance. These fees, where applicable, are included in the published course fee.

Plan to attend the classes you registered for as scheduled. You will not be contacted unless there is a change in the class; for example, if the class is postponed or cancelled.

Dropping and Adding Classes

In 1993, the N.C. legislature enacted a law that requires anyone who takes the same occupational extension course more than twice within a five-year period to pay an additional cost of $6.41-$7.12 per scheduled hour.

If you want to drop a class and receive a refund, the amount of your refund will depend on when you drop the class. Please refer to the refund policy. Course Repetition Policy

Sponsorships

The purpose of a sponsorship is to help pay college expenses (tuition, fees, books, and supplies). Sponsors may include your employer or government agencies (i.e. Employment Security Commission, Job Link, or Vocational Rehabilitation). Each semester, detailed sponsor information must be received by GTCC. This information may be mailed, faxed, or brought in person to the Cashiers Office located in the Luther R. Medlin Campus Center. Authorizations must be received at the time of registration. If authorizations are not received at the time of registration, the student is expected to pay registration fees. It is the student’s responsibility to make sure the Cashiers Office has received an authorization for each class. Contact the cashier’s office when you register to ensure your sponsor information has been received and processed. GTCC Sponsor Agreement forms can be obtained from the Cashiers Office.

Authorizations must include the student’s name, identification number (SID and/or last 4 digits of SSN), and semester to be paid by the sponsor.
