LET'S GET YOU HIRED!

DECIDING YOUR CAREER CHOICE

Transitioning from Student to Young Professional If you find yourself dreading life after graduation due to the uncertainty, have no fear. Shiffa Aziz shares a few ways you can deal with leaving your university life behind.

C

hange is never easy. We all experience it, as change is inevitable. During this period of uncertainty, you may be overwhelmed by the pressure of becoming a working adult. Adding on to that pressure is the emergence of the New Normal, caused by the COVID-19 situation. Do not despair, we’re here to help you with this transition.

MANAGE YOUR MONEY Ah, personal finance and budgeting. It’s every college student’s least favourite item of discussion. However, if you don’t want to be about that #brokelife anymore, then it is a good idea to start planning. Pop quiz: As a working adult, you will be receiving your pay check at the end of each month. Do you a) spend it all at once; or b) put some aside? Let’s hope your answer was ‘b’, because you will have bills to pay, debts to settle, and savings to keep for the future. If you’re guilty of impulse buying, then it’s time to take matters seriously and control your spending habits. Retail therapy can only feel so good until you realise your pockets have run dry.

LET'S GET YOU HIRED!

DECIDING YOUR CAREER CHOICE

MAINTAIN YOUR WORK-LIFE BALANCE Whether you plan to have a nine-to-five job, be a freelancer, or start your own business, you always need to remember: there is more to life than work. Balancing your personal life and work can be harder than you think. With many employees working from home due to the coronavirus, it’s easy to fall prey to becoming a workaholic, which eventually leads to a terrible burnout. Do make time for the things you love. This could be anything, from hanging out with your friends at the mamak, to binging Netflix shows at home. You will find that many companies out there do emphasise on work-life balance as well, because they know that a happy employee is a productive employee.

KEEP YOUR FRIENDS CLOSE... …and your enemies closer? Nah, not in this instance. Chances are, you and your chums will be graduating at the same time, and even if they aren’t, you should still keep in close contact with them. You’ve stuck together through thick and thin, and you can continue to do so by supporting each other through all the trials and tribulations that have yet to come (whilst physical distancing, of course). It doesn’t end there though. While you maintain good relationships with your old friends, don’t forget to make new friends at your workplace. By surrounding yourself with people who care about you, you have a strong support system to fall back on when the going gets tough.

REALIGN YOUR GOALS As a student, one of your main priorities is passing your examinations with flying colours each semester, so you’d be able to flaunt that graduation scroll at the end of your study in uni. After that’s done, what then? Have you given any thought to your long-term career goals? Take some time to make these decisions. This is a new learning curve for you, so be sure to deal with any concerns you have about your career choice. It is a chance to discover yourself; be it by finding out which career path is the most suitable one for you, or by determining where your passion lies.

Part of what makes change difficult is that we are often so deep-rooted within our comfort zone, we neglect to think about the consequences of being underprepared when the time comes for a change. Which is why it is essential for you to not panic, breathe, and deal with this transition as smoothly as possible. Luckily for you, we’ve taken the liberty to ask current working professionals how they managed to deal with their transition from college to the workplace! Head on over to the Employer Hub section and check out the Career Corner profiles to find out more!

LET'S GET YOU HIRED!

DECIDING YOUR CAREER CHOICE

Planning Your Career Planning a career path is more than just deciding you want a job.

Y

ou’re nearing graduation and you either have many potential career paths in mind or none at all. You may have no concrete ideas about your career yet, but you perhaps have an idea of what you want or don’t want from internship experience, and have only just begun looking around. Or maybe you already have a career in mind – you know what you want to do but don’t have a clue on how to get there. Perhaps the pandemic has caused you to rethink your career choice in terms of its longevity in the future. Alternatively, you may be considering further studies, have been offered a position upon graduation, or have other plans. It’s not unusual to be slightly confused when the topic of your career comes up. But we hope to address it here and help you plan your career.

GET AN IDEA Inklings of fear or intimidation when the talk of your future career comes up is not uncommon, and no one is going to judge you if you have not developed an idea of what career you want, or even when you are not ready to start thinking about it yet. You’re simply at the stage where you’re still deciding what career is the best for you as an individual. Remember that there is no one way to determine which path you should follow. Take the time to challenge yourself, get to know yourself better and develop your self-awareness. Audit your skills and continue developing them through internships or extracurricular activities, and, after that, assess them and find out what careers suit your skillset the best and which employers keep a look out for the skills you have honed. From there, make a decision and begin planning your career.

LET'S GET YOU HIRED!

DECIDING YOUR CAREER CHOICE

PLAN If you have a career in mind but are not sure how to get there, you have already begun planning for your future career. You may want to consider speaking to your campus career consultant to talk over your ideas and flesh out a customised plan to keep you on track, or attending specific career programmes that offer training for a sector. Alternatively, if you already have a career in mind but want to spend some time gaining work experience, relevant or not, first, you may wish to turn your attention to building your network instead as you gain more experience. But planning does not only encompass a career path – if you are planning to apply for further studies, don’t be afraid to reach out for help to ensure you have settled on the best path, and make sure you have a plan as well.

JUMP INTO ACTION At this stage, you may either be ready to apply for graduate studies or professional opportunities. Look out for opportunities in graduate schemes or vacancies in the market, and don’t be shy to ask if you need support in drawing up your résumé or writing a cover letter. The market is competitive, and if you have been applying without success, it is vital that you don’t allow yourself to be disheartened. Your campus career counsellors would be able to help you master the key skills you would need to impress employers, and there may even be times when your résumé or cover letter just needs to be refreshed, tweaked or updated. There is a job waiting out there for you – you just have to find it. But if you have landed a graduate job or a chance to further your studies on the postgraduate level, or decided to set up your own business, congratulations are in order! Start looking out for your future career progression instead, and keep self-promoting on the relevant social media sites, such as LinkedIn.

DECIDING YOUR CAREER CHOICE

Passion vs Practicality: The Do’s and Don’ts “Follow your dreams!” “In this economy?”

T

orn between doing the right thing and doing right by you? Even if you feel your current career path is the best decision you’ve made, it is normal to have doubts from time to time. The key is to toe the line between choosing your passion and making practical decisions. Nor Atikah Abdul Wahid outlines the do’s and don’ts in doing just that.

DO YOUR RESEARCH Researching about your chosen career path isn’t just about which job title sounds nice on a business card. There are many aspects to consider, such as the level of education and experience required for the position, salary expectations and job viability, especially in the wake of the global pandemic. If this sounds overwhelming, seek out advice from lecturers, career counsellors and even, senior students. They can respond to your concerns with their own perspectives and experience, enabling you to imagine your prospective future better. Don’t just hit the books – hit up the people with the know-how, too!

12 |

Section 1.0.indd 12

DON’T BECOME ATTACHED TO FUTURE PLANS If you’ve done your homework above, great! But planning for the future must also include being prepared for the unexpected. Not long ago, many around the world were affected by COVID-19 by being forced to change career paths or even change jobs. Make no mistake, it will be a long while before the world recovers from the aftermath of the pandemic, thus it’s important to be more flexible when it comes to your future plans. While it’s great to plan for your future career, you should also allow yourself the possibility of finding your true calling later in life. Whether you heed the call, however, is an entirely different story.

DO EXPLORE DIFFERENT MODULE PATHWAYS If opening up to different career paths sounds too extreme for you, consider exploring different module pathways within your department. Most higher education institutions encourage their students to explore various specialised subjects and sign up for classes from different departments before settling to a chosen career path. This not only gives you an overview of potential career choices but it also equips you with a diverse set of knowledge. For example, if you are a Psychology major, your range of potential career choices vary from forensic scientist to human resources executive. The choices you make while studying could easily change the direction of your career forcing you to make drastic changes.

LET'S GET YOU HIRED!

DECIDING YOUR CAREER CHOICE

DON’T LIMIT YOURSELF People love to give themselves labels: extrovert, artistic, melancholic and the list goes on. While these labels can be useful for self-discovery, it would be a mistake to limit yourself based on preconceived notions of who you think you are at the moment. Do you feel pressured to choose a solitary job in a lab simply because you’re an introvert? Or are you aiming for an arts-related career simply because you’re an imaginative person? Basing your career on a prominent trait or strength ignores the fact that people can change and that every job requires various skills and traits. Sure, your detail-oriented personality may bode well for your medical studies but being an excellent doctor also requires great social skills in treating every patient. Instead of using your personality as a crutch or limit, evaluate your other abilities and traits to enhance them further.

DO WHAT EXCITES YOU Perhaps ‘excite’ is a strong word but if you’re already dreading going to your classes now, imagine having a decades-long career based on those very same topics. If you don’t have any career or field that excites you, choose one that at least piques your curiosity. As time goes by, your priorities may change – you may swap a high-paying position for a fulfilling low-paying one and vice versa. However, a career that keeps you interested is the one that will demand you to change and improve to retain that career. Instead of seeing only obstacles, you welcome the challenges that come with the job and this will ensure longevity in career satisfaction.

DON’T IGNORE THE WARNING SIGNS There is a difference between following your passion and freefalling into one. Even if you are committed to a career path, you need to acknowledge the potential negative aspects of the job, such as low salary, gruelling working hours, competitive job market and so on. While this exercise may damper the fire in you, it is vital to know what to expect in the long run. If you find these negative aspects worth the hassle of having your dreams come true, then carry on! But if you balk at the thought of being indefinitely unemployed or working in a high-tension environment, it’s time to go back to the drawing board.

LET'S GET YOU HIRED!

DECIDING YOUR CAREER CHOICE

Practising Self-reflection in Your Career Journey Whether you’re a newly minted first-year undergrad or a fresh grad looking for their first job, there’s always time to pause and evaluate your life choices in your career journey. Take a breather with us.

S

elf-reflection is not only vital in your career planning but also, for envisioning the future you want, realigning your priorities and even overcoming setbacks. If you find that selfreflection is an alien concept to you or just plain tedious, gradmalaysia has prepared a simple list of questions to get you going.

WHAT IS CURRENTLY HAPPENING? This question may seem too simplistic or too broad. But this question is supposed to spark the act of mindfulness – the act of paying attention to everything that is happening to you and around you. Are you sitting comfortably? Can you hear noises in your surroundings? While mindfulness tends to be described as a form of meditation, you can practice mindfulness even for a brief period. This question prepares your mind to pay attention and relax so you can have a calm objective session of self-reflection.

HAVE YOU EXPERIENCED ANY EYE-OPENING MOMENTS LATELY? Whether positive or negative, any moment could be a powerful learning experience. If you have finished a semester or even, an entire undergraduate degree, contemplate on the moments that gave you a lasting impact. You don’t necessarily have to experience a monumental milestone – even surviving a particularly trying week could be enough for contemplation.

14 |

Section 1.0.indd 14

WHAT WERE THE MOST INTERESTING CHALLENGES AND WHAT MADE THEM SO? The scenarios you deem as challenges can be revealing – you might ace participating in group discussions but struggle to write the written assignments. Certain obstacles could point out the areas in your life that need improvement. On the other hand, the way you choose to overcome every obstacle also shows your personality and personal beliefs. Do you face problems head-on without any hesitation or do you take a step back to strategise for a better outcome? You also need to contemplate whether you have made the right choice in those moments.

LET'S GET YOU HIRED!

DECIDING YOUR CAREER CHOICE

HOW IS YOUR RELATIONSHIP WITH THE PEOPLE IN YOUR LIFE? Self-reflection doesn’t always need to centre on just yourself – the way you treat others is equally important. Have you assisted a fellow coursemate or teammate until the problem has been resolved? Did you provide solutions or did you hinder others? Your relationship with others does not only reflect your ability to communicate but also your openness to learn and tolerate alternative perspectives. Your current communication style could also indicate your preference for certain types of careers. For example, if you prefer a casual and open relationship with your teammates, you may prefer to work in a company with a flat hierarchy in the future.

WHAT IS YOUR BIGGEST IMPROVEMENT OR PROGRESS SO FAR? It’s easy to get fixated on the mistakes and problems, especially if you feel that you’re lacking in major accomplishments. Hence, it is also important to take note of the positive developments in your life as it encourages you to stick to good habits and keep improving. Have you improved your public speaking skills lately, based on your last class presentation? Did you manage to bump up your CGPA last semester, even by a little? While you may not see direct results, it is these small changes that would accumulate into achievements later.

WHERE SHOULD YOU CHANNEL YOUR EFFORTS NEXT? After a session of contemplating the past, it’s time to focus on the future. If you’ve met all your current goals or deadlines – congratulations! But now is the time to plan on how to improve further or, perhaps, shift your focus onto another area of your life. For example, if your CGPA has immensely improved since the past semester, you might want to consider focusing on extra-curricular activities next. Nowadays, it takes more than just great academic results to land a job! After all is said and done, self-reflection should bring you more clarity in what you set out to achieve. While it may seem nerve-wracking to ruminate on your life, you will feel much more confident with your past choices and also future plans after a moment of self-reflection.

LET'S GET YOU HIRED! PLANNING YOUR JOB SKILLS

Join the Club A plethora of clubs and societies are at your fingertips, so why not take advantage of this opportunity? Shiffa Aziz stresses on the benefits of joining a club while in university.

B

eing involved in extra-curricular activities will definitely give you an edge over others when applying for internships or jobs. You should know that relying solely on your academic achievements is a big no-no as was the case when you were in secondary school. The only difference is the number of clubs have increased tenfold since school, including the existence of new activities you never knew you wanted to partake in. Putting aside the excitement, here are a few things to keep in mind as you experience a whole new world.

OUR JOIN

CLUB

!

POWER IS POWER

All organisations have an established corporate structure. There are the top positions – such as the president, vice president, secretary, or the bureau leaders (varies depending on the type of club) – where a single person would be elected to be in charge of managing their team. Offer yourself to take up a role within the organisation. Being a regular member of a club is one thing but holding an important role in one is another. HOWEVER, with great power comes great responsibility! If you feel you aren’t up to the task of taking on a role of responsibility, don’t. You know yourself better than anyone. But do not let the lack of experience prevent you from giving it a go. Sure, you might hit a bump in the road here and there but it is a learning curve after all. Learn from your failures and take in the experience.

GET MOVING!

While it is perfectly fine to be a regular club member, that doesn’t mean you should be a dormant one. Whenever you have the chance, take part in festivities! Your club is joining a competition? Sign up as a participant. Organising an annual dinner? Help out as the event crew. There’s a weekly club activity? Be there. You’ll find this tip easier to follow if you are passionate about the club, especially when the activities are catered towards your interests. You may think it is a hassle but imagine if you had actually unlocked an achievement, e.g. winning a team competition. That achievement speaks volumes of your character as you have not only done it for yourself but also for your team. By building a sense of camaraderie among you and your fellow members, you will learn the meaning of teamwork – a useful trait not only in the workplace but in life as well.

LET'S GET YOU HIRED! PLANNING YOUR JOB SKILLS

IT’S NEVER TOO EARLY TO NETWORK

Who better to start networking with than your teammates? Like it or not, you will be acquainted with these people as you will be working alongside them and can observe their work ethics. So, how do you get better acquainted with them? Always remember to keep in touch even after leaving the club. While it may be impossible to keep in contact with everyone, take extra care of those contacts you have built good relationships with. Clubs offer many ways for you to take part in activities and events where you will be exposed to people from different organisations and institutions. You might even get the chance to meet up with potential employers! They may not seem useful to you at the moment but, trust me, when you’re looking for internship placements or a good recommendation, these contacts will become invaluable to you in the future.

PARTICULAR SET OF SKILLS

Whether you’re leading a team, participating in club activities or networking with members, you are inadvertently gaining and sharpening skills that will prove useful in the working world. These include leadership skills, communication skills and teamwork skills, so be sure to absorb those experiences as much as possible! However, you shouldn’t just leave it at that as one of the most important skills you will learn (and master) is the art of multitasking. Ensure that you are able to balance both your studies and your extracurricular activities. It is best to excel at both as this will make you a well-rounded student.

LET'S GET YOU HIRED! PLANNING YOUR JOB SKILLS

WE WANT

YOU

TO VOLUNTEER! Are you ready to volunteer as tribute to the numerous causes available in Malaysia? gradmalaysia encourages you to take that step and reap the benefits.

H

ere’s the deal: if you’ve never volunteered before, now is the perfect time to do so. It doesn’t matter who you are: a college student, a fresh graduate or a working professional – you have the means to put yourself out there and be a good samaritan by volunteering! However, it’s not just the satisfaction of helping others that you’ll gain. There’s more and we’re here to bring it to light.

EXPANDING YOUR CONNECTIONS

Chances are you’ll be working in teams for a volunteering activity, which means you will be paired up with complete strangers. But don’t remain strangers after all is said and done! This is your chance to connect with your community AND broaden your network. It shouldn’t be too hard to strike up a conversation with them. After all, you are working together to achieve a shared goal. Whether it be by partaking in a soup kitchen organised by PERTIWI or helping out at PAWS Malaysia, you’ll definitely have things in common to talk about. After connecting with your peers, shift your focus to the organisers of those activities. Receiving their contacts will be invaluable to you and your career, specifically for your résumé and CV.

LET'S GET YOU HIRED! PLANNING YOUR JOB SKILLS

REINFORCING CURRENT SKILLS

Volunteering regularly helps you stay on your toes and keep your skills in check. It’s one thing to gain useful skills but it’s another to apply those skills in the real world. By doing so, you will not lose your touch or get rusty as you have an avenue to keep practising those skills. The main skills you will constantly be sharpening are your social skills as volunteer work requires you to communicate, be it with your team members or with the target audience. Ensure that you are constantly putting the skills you’ve gained to practice as we all know it is easier to forget than to remember. Also, remember to keep track of these skills by constantly updating your résumé, so you don’t forget about them later.

JOINING CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY

Most companies nowadays are investing in corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives. It is their way of showing support to a good cause as well as garnering positive attention from the general public. This is where you, the friendly neighbourhood volunteer, may bring up your volunteering work to the recruiters during the interview process. Here’s a tip: try to align your volunteering activities with the company’s CSR initiatives. Or better yet, try to volunteer for the company’s programmes prior to the interview! You can bet that recruiters will want to hear your thoughts and discuss your experiences with them.

BUILDING INVALUABLE EXPERIENCE

The range of activities volunteering entails is endless. You could be a part of an environmental movement to save the planet, a charity organisation to help the needy, or a human rights cause to raise awareness. If you feel that these experiences may not be related to the career you wish to pursue, keep in mind that these experiences offer you an insight into real-world situations, which can be a real eye-opener for graduates and even, working professionals. By showing interest in the world around you and actively making it a better place, you are giving recruiters the impression that you are not just any candidate who stays in their comfort zone. Ultimately, these experiences make you a cut above the rest.

Remember, if you are participating in any volunteering activities which requires you to work in groups and in public, always maintain your distance and take the proper precautions when interacting with others e.g. wear a mask, sanitise your hands. It’s better to be safe than sorry! #SaynotoCOVID19

Fantastic Skills and How to Acquire Them Before you even think about sending out that résumé of yours, we want you to be equipped with the right tools for the workplace. Check out gradmalaysia’s crash course on the skills you need to develop your career.

W

e all know how incredibly important having a particular set of skills are. Take a look at the requirements for any job and you will find that recruiters seek candidates with an impressive skill set. It may be “strong leadership skills”, “able to write and converse in Mandarin” or “up-to-date with current trends of the IT industry” – the list goes on. In this article, we take a look at the two types of skills necessary for advancing your career: hard skills and soft skills.

HARD SKILLS Hard skills are also known as technical skills. They are usually acquired through formal training, professional certifications or previous work experience. This means that these skills are teachable and can be measured.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Language skills are measured through levels of proficiency, usually labelled as beginner, intermediate and advanced. While us Malaysians are taught Bahasa Melayu and English in schools – which asserts our claim as bilinguals – many possess other language capabilities as well. Having a multilingual background is sure to get you more visibility within a pool of candidates. Check out the language classes offered by your university or if you are willing to spend on one-on-one coaching, as there are many available tutors out there. Remember, learning a new language takes commitment and effort, so set aside time to actively practise using that language. Also, don’t forget to take language proficiency tests to see where your fluency stands!

JOB SKILLS

These are work-specific skills which you MUST have to excel in your chosen career. It varies from field to field e.g. IT skills (data analytics, software development, etc), graphic design skills (Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, etc), finance skills (accounting, financial reporting etc) and many more. These skills are usually obtained through a university diploma or degree, which itself is a certification of the hard skills you have learnt within your course. However, they also can be gained by attending courses, workshops and even through on-the-job training.

SOFT SKILLS Following hard skills are soft skills, which are also known as transferable skills. These skills are generally in-demand as transferable skills can be used across all careers, regardless of the industry you are in. You can bring these skills to different jobs because they involve essential people skills. Here are a few soft skills you should master:

LEADERSHIP SKILLS

It's about assigning and delegating tasks well, setting deadlines and leading by a good example. Getting actively involved with a group activity, such as with student societies, and taking responsibility for something is the best way to learn leadership skills in university. Or just go a step further by taking on a coaching or mentoring role as it can also develop the relationship-building and performanceenhancing aspects of management and leadership.

COMMUNICATION SKILLS

This covers verbal and written communication, not to mention your listening skills. It's about being clear and concise as well as effectively tailoring your message for the audience while listening to the views of others. Practise your communication skills by seeking out opportunities that require interactions with others. For example, take up part-time jobs or volunteer for work that require communication such as customer service.

TEAMWORK SKILLS

Pro Tip If you already have an idea about your career path, you can start planning the type of skills you need for it. For instance, if you aspire to join the automotive industry, scan through the job requirements of the job positions advertised in that field and find out what are the skills automotive engineers require.

Teamwork is about building positive working relationships that help everyone to achieve goals and business objectives. They can be developed in many different extracurricular activities. Joining the committee of a student society is a perfect way to gain experience in working as a team and managing others. Internships and part-time jobs are also good places to develop teamwork skills because you will be working with new people within a professional environment.

ORGANISATIONAL SKILLS

This is about prioritising tasks, working efficiently and productively, and managing your time well. You need to be clear on what is important to focus on and how you go about meeting deadlines. Reflect on and try out different techniques that enable you to plan, prioritise and get things done. Are you a fan of “to-do” lists? Do you keep a diary? Do you use an app or the traditional way of pen and paper? What keeps you on track and why? Discover the method that works best for you.

Take Part in Part-time Jobs Ever thought of earning extra income when you have the opportunity to do so? Here are some of the perks of getting a side hustle.

T

here is nothing like earning your own income while learning a few skills through a side hustle. Not only that, you can also do a part-time job in the field of your interest and see whether you want to pursue it as a career. Read the tips below to find out why getting a part-time job is worthwhile.

22 |

Section 2.0.indd 22

EARN POCKET MONEY

If you have time to spare, such as waiting for a new semester to start or after completing your university education, why not do a part-time job? You get to earn pocket money and use it for your travels or for your own spending. Not only that, you could use it for something that you need, such as a laptop. The bottom line is that you have the freedom to spend your money on whatever you want. In the same vein, if your parents are struggling financially, your part-time job could be the remedy to lower their burdens. You could pay for half of the cost of your fees while your parents could come up with the other half. That way, they would not be overburdened with the total cost of your tuition fees. You could do a part-time job at a retail store or a fast-food joint, depending on your choice. These places are always in need of frontline staff so this is where you could be a part of the team. You will not only earn an income but also, learn how to properly manage your finances as well.

BUILD YOUR NETWORKING CIRCLE

DEVELOP INTERPERSONAL SKILLS

Interpersonal skills are important in the workforce as you will have to handle many personalities such as demanding or impatient customers. Interpersonal skills are key in part-time jobs whether it is in retail, education or fast-food restaurants where you would always need to face people and see to their requests. Moreover, through a side hustle, you will learn how to talk to people and be sensitive to the needs of others in the workplace. For example, when you speak to your manager or your clients, you will learn how to speak politely to get your point across. However, when you speak to your peers, you will have more freedom in interacting and voicing out your opinions about the work culture in general. When you learn how to speak to different people from different backgrounds, you will also learn the art of speaking to a variety of people. Consequently, you will also build up your confidence level and find presentations in university or at the workplace easier to tackle than before. This is because you would already have the experience of engaging in conversations with so many people from different walks of life.

If you think networking is only for when you have a full-time job, think again! Networking can even happen when you are doing a part-time job. For example, if you meet a client who happens to work in your dream company, you should build a rapport with him or her so that you will know someone working in that company. Similarly, you can maintain the relationships you have with your former co-workers even when you’re already working full-time as their contacts might become useful later in their respective jobs. For instance, you might need their help to get information on a potential project for a company where they might be working at on a full-time basis. When you build your circle of network with different groups of people, you do not only learn about other job opportunities out there but make new friends in the process too. Other than that, you get to mingle and share your similar interests too, such as your hobbies or any other interesting activities. Do not underestimate the power of networking as it is a useful tool in any industry you are in.

In conclusion, a part-time job offers you the chance to better yourself through the many skills you will learn. Don’t miss the opportunity, especially if you have the time to spare to get a brief taste of the working world.

LET'S GET YOU HIRED! UTILISING YOUR INTERNSHIP EXPERIENCE

Choosing the Right Internship Programme for You It is that time of the year where you get to apply what you have learned in uni into an internship. There might be so many companies that you have in mind but, ultimately, you should choose an internship that will help you grow as an individual.

A

fter studying for two to three years, you are finally able to take a short break from your books and experience the working world – through an internship programme. Here are some of the factors you should take into consideration before embarking on your internship journey.

Gain meaningful

EXPERIENCE One of the important factors in selecting an internship is how it can help you get a job later once you complete your studies. Employers would want to know if you can incorporate your learning experience to the specific job role you applied for. Moreover, when you complete tasks during an internship, your superiors could entrust you with more responsibilities that enrich your experience further. Remember that an internship might not necessarily be something in your field especially if you have other areas of interest. Therefore, it is a great trial-and-error ground for you to know whether it is something you would want to do when you start working later. For instance, if an internship programme you experienced is not your cup of tea, do not feel rejected. Know that you can apply to other internships even after completing your university education.

Research

THE COMPANY Look out for the company’s values and whether you will fit in. Ask yourself these questions: what do I want to get from the three months being in this company? Will I be able to achieve my learning goals in this company? You could also ask your seniors who underwent the same internship and get their feedback about their experience. In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, you should find out from employees how the company handled their operations during these difficult times. That way, you will have an idea of the working culture, the superiors and their work attitude towards the whole situation. Ultimately, you should get both the perspectives of your seniors and your own research about the company. That way, you will have an informed decision on the company.

Select the

RIGHT LOCATION Location is also an important factor in deciding an internship position for you. The city areas, such as Kuala Lumpur or Penang, are ideal places to find an internship because of the massive job market they have to offer. However, bear in mind that the cost of living would be higher there than in other parts of the country. In addition to that, as an intern, your salary would not be enough to cover your expenses, such as rental, food and other necessities. If you are wondering about solutions to tackle this problem, there are a few options. One of them is by asking your parents for a soft loan so that you have more than enough to cover your expenses. Alternatively, you could also use your own savings to finance these payments. On another note, minimising your spending is a great way for you to live within your own means. For example, you could opt for public transport if it is accessible to you. Another way to save money is to always keep a budget for your daily expenses.

Getting an internship position is definitely going to be an exciting period in your life. However, in order for that to happen, you will need to do your homework in choosing the right one. Look into these factors wisely before choosing your internship programme!

Making an Impression as an Intern You’ve finally received an offer letter from a company after applying to many places. The next step is ensuring that you stand out as an intern to make the best out of your internship.

Y

ou will definitely feel excited and nervous before starting your internship. There might be a lot of questions running through your mind: will I be able to perform my best as an intern? Will I be able to fulfil my own learning goals during the internship? If you have already made up your mind on the company, here are some useful tips to create a good impression of yourself as an intern.

Show your

COMMITMENT Commitment is an important ingredient in being an excellent intern. It shows how serious you are about the role. Show your bosses that you are interested in the tasks and projects assigned to you by doing them well and on time. By keeping up with your excellent work and deadlines, your bosses would be impressed and might even turn your internship into a full-time job. This would definitely require you to prove to your bosses that you have a track record of excellent work since the day you started. Seeking feedback on the work you have completed is a way to know what to improve on and what can be better presented. For instance, as a visual designer intern, you might get feedback to further improve on the colours and layout of a product so it is more visually appealing to clients. That way, you get to tap on areas that need improvement to produce quality work. Sometimes, commitment may also include working overtime, especially when preparing for an event or meeting deadlines. At times, you may also be required to work during weekends, too. But remember, your plans can be adjusted if you plan well and work efficiently.

Do

CHALLENGING TASKS Doing a difficult task will definitely force you out of your comfort zone but it is worth the shot as you get to tap on your other talents as well. Usually, doing something difficult will require more time, effort and research. The price for the risk you take is the experience of learning something entirely new and enriching your skills. Sometimes, your superiors will ask you to take on a challenging task, especially if they believe that you can execute it. A demanding task might seem overwhelming at first but, with proper guidance from your superiors, you should be able to complete it. Remember that you should seek help from colleagues, and even your superiors, if you need help with harnessing substantial ideas or reducing the workload.

Ask questions

WHEN IN DOUBT An important trait to have as an intern is to always ask questions when you are unsure of anything, such as the systems in the office or vague instructions on tasks. You could start by asking your co-workers in your department as they will be more than willing to help you familiarize yourself with work processes. This is important so that you are not stuck and will be able to progress with your own work. Do not let fear grip you from reaching out. The bottom line is to always seek clarifications if you need help with a task. An outstanding intern is definitely one who sees their learning growth progress since their first day of internship. Do not lose the opportunity to be a star intern as your bosses might even offer you a full-time position at the end of your internship. Be a willing intern who takes initiatives and thirsts for knowledge and experiences throughout the internship.

Boost Your Internship Experience For the next two to three months, you will be undergoing your internship and get a sneak peek of the working world. Nashrah Ghazali brings to light the different ways to make it worthwhile.

Seek

CAREER MENTORS Although mentorship is not practised widely in our country, it is extremely beneficial, especially during your internship. Basically, mentors are those who can give you careerrelated advice, help you make connections as well as write recommendations for you. Recommendations are words of acknowledgement of your abilities for your future employers’ reference. But how do I find a mentor, you ask? During your internship, you will be working with a lot of people from different departments. If you have a colleague who is helpful in answering work-related questions, works with you regularly and cares for both your personal and professional development, start having conversations regarding mentorship with them. If you’re in luck, sometimes your supervisor would even offer themselves to be your mentor.

Document and record

EVERY TASK

During your internship, you will be learning a whole lot of things and also, entrusted with many different tasks in this journey. From the simplest to the most complicated, it can be a very long list of responsibilities. It’s important for you to keep track of everything you’ve done and the knowledge you have obtained during your internship as they all add up to your overall experience. There are many different ways to do this: a) you can keep a journal if handwriting is your thing or b) you can keep a draft email and type out every new knowledge or task that you have done along with their dates. All this information will support your achievements and add weight to your résumé later. Believe me, it will make your résumé look impressive in the future.

Research the company

AND INDUSTRY

If your career journey is like going through a university course, then internships would be the introductory chapter in gaining industry knowledge. For instance, if you are an editorial intern of a publishing company, you will learn more about the publishing industry. Aim to learn about the company as a whole. Try to seek out colleagues from other departments (e.g. marketing or sales) and learn how they contribute to the company. While doing your internship, start thinking ahead – is this the type of company and department that you would want to work in the future? You may discover during your internship that you prefer to work in a different company or industry. However, don't view the internship as a waste of time, as it’s a blessing to find out your preferred career early.

This short list of things to do will make a difference in your internship experience. Remember that you’re not doing this internship just for the sake of graduating from university but to shape yourself as an ideal candidate for your future career.

LET'S GET YOU HIRED! UTILISING YOUR INTERNSHIP EXPERIENCE

Why an Internship is Vital for Your Career Going through an internship experience is important as it lets you get a feel of the working world. Anne Grace Savitha reveals five reasons why an internship is important for you!

Gain new

SKILLS Internships are the best place for you to gain valuable skills that you can use in the workforce. You can apply what you have learned into a specific role and also, gain practical skills that are equally essential. For instance, if you are assigned the role of a business development intern, you will learn multiple skills together along with the job such as researching on the types of markets and using your persuasive skills to get your clients to buy a certain product. Additionally, you will also learn soft skills when you team up with your colleagues for projects and speak to your bosses at work. These skills are important to foster a way of communicating effectively with your peers at work and to better prepare you for the workforce. Also, it gives you a sense of how to handle different personalities when you start your first job.

Make fruitful

CONNECTIONS

An internship is one of the ways you can make meaningful relationships with the people in the industry. A colleague at work can become a close friend over time through collaborative projects, or even lunch dates. By the same token, you get to forge friendships with other interns in the office and maintain that relationship even after you have completed your internship. These connections are beneficial to you as your peers could recommend job positions for you when you are looking for a job later. Similarly, you can also approach them if you face any problems at work and need a listening ear to help you pull through the day.

Understand yourself

BETTER

When you undergo an internship, you would be able to understand yourself better. For instance, if you are assigned a social media intern role, you could find out whether it is the kind of job you want to take on as a full-time role. Alternatively, if it is a role that does not suit you, you could explore other areas in the same field such as a digital marketing role. Through internships, you get to discover yourself through the roles you take on and whether they resonate with your passion and interests.

Build your

CONFIDENCE Let’s be honest, as an intern, there will be many things you will find intimidating, such as speaking with your superiors and doing a task that is entirely new to you. However, the key to breaking away from this feeling is to practise. When you continuously do a task, you will get the hang of it. Similarly, when you break the ice with your superiors by steadily communicating with them, you will know their working styles and how to approach them for a discussion or meeting. These are some of the ways you can build your confidence in the workplace and adjust yourself to the working culture.

Pro Tip You may have to do your internship on a work-fromhome basis, given the severity of the COVID-19 pandemic. Do not let this be a major factor which influences your decision, especially if the internship you want checks every other box. You’ll find that working from home has its own benefits as well!

Strengthen your

RÉSUMÉ

There is always the need to impress recruiters and employers about your qualifications and work experience. An internship is an experience that you can add to your résumé as it provides information on what you have learned throughout your internship. If you are called for a job interview, you can tell the recruiter the assignments and projects you have executed during your stint as an intern. That way, they will know your experiences and whether you can use your learning takeaways into the job. In conclusion, an internship is an important period where you get the opportunity to learn as much as possible within a short period of time if you put in the effort and make it a good learning ground for you!

Résumé: The Skeleton New to the job scene? Fear not, gradmalaysia has got you covered on what to include in your first résumé.

A

résumé is your personal brand. It’s all about putting yourself on paper, with the sole intention of showing potential employers what you have to offer. While writing your first résumé, keep in mind that it doesn’t have to be a perfect, star-studded, 10-page document filled with all your accomplishments. However, there are certain criteria you need to adhere to, so that your résumé contains all the necessary information employers would want to know.

Your résumé should have… Your personal details

Worry not, it doesn’t have to be too detailed. Your full name, age, phone number and email address would suffice. Without these key information, employers would be unable to contact you for an interview. Make sure you do not overlook these small, yet crucial, details.

Your academic performance

You don’t have to include all your results since elementary, as this will take up a whole chunk of space. Just start from your most recent (final) academic results, and backdate it to your SPM results. Here is where you can include your academic-specific special achievements/awards too! E.g. Dean’s List Award/Best Student Award, etc.

A list of your co-curricular activities

Focus on the activities and volunteering work experience during your time in college. This shows that you aren’t just an academically-driven person, but also showcases ways you initiated to build some of your soft skills through the activities you were involved in. For example, leadership roles build your confidence as well as your teamwork and communication skills.

Your previous internship/job experience

This section allows employers to evaluate you based on your employment history. For fresh graduates, you may not have much work experience to list here, seeing as you’ve just left college. Not to worry though! In the eyes of an employer, they would understand why you would be lacking job experience. However, in that case, you should list down your internship experience, so that employers know that you are familiar with the ways of the working world.

Résumé: The Character With the rough outline of what goes into your résumé, here’s the character your résumé should carry.

Tailored to different jobs

If you have ever sent out a large number of applications with the same résumé, you might want to rethink your strategy. A better approach would be to highlight different strengths according to the job description, for the jobs you are applying for. Here’s the thing – employers sift through plenty of résumés for a single job position. Personalising your résumé to fit their requirements would make you stand out among the rest. It’s worth the effort!

Written with a professional writing style

Allow me to demonstrate: ‘So, like, if you were to kinda write you’re résumé with an overly casual tone like this and with loads of spelling mistakes, you ain’t gonna have any employers calling you anytime soon, ya know what I’m sayin?’ Keep it professional, and make sure your email address is subject to this rule too. Can you imagine an employer’s reaction if they were to come across an email address like, ‘peterkavinskyslover@ gmail.com’? Stick to your first and last name, please.

Easy to read

If you’re not writing your résumé from scratch, then you’ve probably come across many résumé templates online. So, which of these templates should make the cut? It’s advisable to choose one which allows employers to read your résumé with ease. Avoid using over-the-top graphics and fonts. Instead, focus on templates which have arranged different sections of information in a way that is neat, organised, and clear. Microsoft Word and Google Docs, for example, provide exceptional résumé templates.

Straight to the point

You want to be as concise and as straightforward as possible. Yes, yes, you want to provide an explanation for your latest exploits and give the employer more context regarding your accomplishments, right? Well guess what, that’s what your cover letter is for. While you explain your suitability for the job in your cover letter, your résumé bullet points the facts of the matter. This helps to shorten your résumé, as it should not exceed two pages.

Proofread

Carefully scan your résumé from top to bottom before sending it out to employers. Make sure you AVOID TYPOS AT ALL COSTS. You need to be meticulous when checking your résumé for errors, because mistakes of any shape or form will reflect poorly on you. Sometimes, a second pair of eyes helps in pointing out any mistakes you might have overlooked. You can ask your family and friends for help, or you can always enlist in proofreading services offered online.

inkedIn, Facebook, YouTube and Instagram are four of the most frequently used social media platforms that are used by fresh grads to seek for jobs and engage with employers. It’s especially important for you to make your online presence better known, as recruiters are increasingly using the internet as a medium for recruitment purposes, since it’s difficult to meet with candidates face-to-face because of the COVID-19 situation. In the job-hunting field, it is almost a guaranteed process for future employers to browse through the data you have put forth with the intention to evaluate if you are a favourable addition to the organisation. So how can you properly tailor your information to make sure that you put your best foot forward and help yourself in this job-hunting process by gaining favour from your potential employers?

36 |

Section 4.0.indd 36

Go into detail on what you did during your internship and all the times you participated in voluntary programmes in university. Add that to your profile! Some recruiters are more interested in your participation in extracurricular activities than your academic achievements, so let’s make sure you don’t miss anything.

Connect with thought leaders of your preferred field

Initiate conversations with them in their postings. If you are brave enough, you could always message them for some career advice. They would usually be more than willing to share their knowledge with keen to motivate fresh graduates (perhaps you remind them of their younger self). Once you have established a genuine connection with them, politely ask them if they could endorse you on some skills you are confident of.

Status: Employed. (Facebook) Again, post pictures of events that are relevant to the job Candid pictures and fun captions are a great way to showcase your personality, rather than just through your standardised résumé.

Be extremely careful with your words

This does not mean that you have lost all rights of posting about interesting topics, though. Just be sure to remove any content that could be offensive. Be yourself, but if your true self is a wee bit too much to handle, maybe it’s time to tone it down a little.

#Promoteyourself along with your selfies (Instagram) Ah, Instagram – the perfect platform for self-marketing. The vibrant short videos, pictures and of course, #instagramstory

While you’re busy posting about that concert you were at last week with your followers and friends, why don’t you market yourself to the right recruiters as well?

Click and subscribe… for a job! (YouTube) An extensive history on YouTube is not needed to garner attention from corporations

You merely need to tailor your content to your targeted recruiters. If you are interested in pursuing a career in media, utilise this platform to its maximum limit. Research on ways to effectively tag your videos, put thought into planning your content and be sure to not oversell yourself. P/S: Don’t forget to share your video links on your résumé and other social media!

Give them a little clue on what kind of social events excite you, or the kind of topics would trigger your concern Let’s bait them into a small portion of your ‘personal space’ to show them that you can be responsible and have fun at the same time.

The best way to keep your digital presence in check is to make sure that you only post useful and nondetrimental content. Connect every platform to one another to create a wider reach, and monitor your updates. Utilising all of these platforms in your career advancement is a legit skill to have nowadays, so start planning today and get on those platforms like a professional.

Show them; don’t tell them!

If you find it difficult to explain your strengths through words, you can flaunt it in your videos. For fields such as graphic design and architecture, you can always choose to show off your skills by capturing live footage of yourself using core programmes during your design process. Think of it as your online portfolio – surely you want to make it as neat as possible.

6 Marketing Strategies for Your Résumé Jaideep Patel shares six marketing tips you can use to make your résumé work that much harder for you.

T

he world of marketing is fast-paced, competitive and exciting. Marketers work around the clock to promote specific products or services (or even ideas) to targeted groups of customers. Many of these tips are tried-and-tested, and some work wonderfully well in helping you create a résumé that gets you noticed.

Tip #1: Know your target

Start by understanding how your target (in this case, the recruiter) behaves on a daily basis. Recruiters are busy, constantly skimming through résumés after résumés, day in and day out. The implementation of AI and automation in the recruitment process can’t replace the human element required to spot the right talent for the right job. So make this task easier for recruiters by keeping your résumé (especially the first page) neat, tidy and easy to read.

38 |

Section 4.0.indd 38

Tip #2: Optimise your headline

While it is tempting to brand yourself as a ‘Creative Extraordinaire’ instead of the plain old ‘Graphic Designer’, remember that the best headlines work when they are descriptive. Keep it simple and don’t make it hard for recruiters to understand what you do, or what job you are applying for. Being creative in a résumé can work against you, and this is a good example.

When you’re in the market for a new job, your name is your brand. So be consistent with it. If you’re going to use ‘Wan Rohaini’ for work-related communication (résumé, cover letter, email address, etc) then stick to that. It is completely fine to use a shortened (or a simpler version of your name if it is hard to spell) for job-seeking purposes, as long as you are consistent with it.

We discussed being consistent with your brand, but you will also need to protect it. Your greatest enemies: typos, grammatical errors and formatting slip-ups. This will tarnish your personal brand – not to mention lower your chances of getting a job. Sending in a sloppy résumé is no excuse these days, so take every precaution to protect your greatest asset: your reputation.

There will be dozens (if not hundreds) of people applying for the same position as you, so how do you stand out from the rest? Start by positioning yourself within your industry of choice. Among the things you can do to build your authority is using your social media networks to create content relevant to your area of work. It can be as simple as blog posts or observations on happenings within the industry.

Your résumé should be clean, tidy and easy to read, so it’s time for you to explore other platforms to highlight other things, such as your creative skills. It doesn’t matter if you are applying for one of the more conventional sectors, such as banking or accounting – creating a visumé or a website will display a more interesting and balanced side of yourself to the recruiter.

LET'S GET YOU HIRED! ACING YOUR INTERVIEW

Job Interview Survival Guide Before attending job interviews, you should have an idea of the kind of questions interviewers have ready for you. It’s important to remember that no matter how challenging the question is, there is always an appropriate answer for it.

Y

ou can never be too prepared when it comes to interviews. After all, the sheer number of possible questions you could face are endless. But don’t let that intimidate you into avoiding interviews altogether. Take it as a challenge! No one said entering the workforce would be easy. Here are a list of interview questions which could potentially stop you in your tracks.

$

Tell me about yourself

“What? How can I possibly summarise myself in just a few sentences?” you ask. For starters, it’s possible if you know what to say. You need to tell them aspects about yourself which show them that you are the right person for the job. Don’t regurgitate your résumé, instead tell them about your personality, past experiences, and future goals. Also, refrain from generic statements like ‘I like long walks on the beach…’. Remember, this is your chance to make a good first impression on the interviewer for the job that you’re applying for.

What is your greatest weakness?

You might be hesitating to answer this honestly because you don’t want to reveal compromising information about yourself. However, know that the interviewers would appreciate your truthfulness rather than your claims to not possess any weaknesses. After all, no one is flawless. The best way to follow up your answer is by telling them the measures you have taken or are taking to combat your weakness. This is a subtle way of informing interviewers that you are capable of overcoming your weaknesses.

40 |

Section 5.0.indd 40

Where do you see yourself in five years?

For this question, you need to be familiar with the career path you are on. Is it possible for you to move on to a higher position? Is there any room for career growth? Be ambitious but also realistic. For instance, you can’t expect to be a member of parliament in just five years or less, unless you’re P. Prabakaran or Syed Saddiq. In any case, you have to be confident whilst answering this question, otherwise the interviewer may question your commitment to this job.

LET'S GET YOU HIRED! ACING YOUR INTERVIEW

Why should we hire YOU?

Interviewers are inadvertently asking, “Why should we hire you instead of anyone else?” through this question. The idea here is to distinguish yourself from the competition by selling yourself as the best candidate for the position. Carefully align your strengths to the requirements of the job and narrate them in an engaging manner. A summary of what you should say is – I have the necessary skills you are looking for and I can prove it by telling you how I solved a problem I encountered by using said skills.

What do you know about our company?

Mark my words, this is definitely a question you do NOT want to be under prepared for. There is no way you can smooth-talk your way out of this one if you neglected to do your research. Make sure you are well versed in the company’s history, their business and services, and their products. Avoid controversial topics or negative issues which involve the organisation. Your main source of information would very much likely stem from the company’s main website and social networks.

How do you handle pressure?

This question is usually asked by interviewers because they want to gauge how well you react in stressful situations. Like it or not, you will face these kinds of situations in the workplace, be it regarding co-workers, bosses, or in some cases, clients. Describe an experience where you had to deal with pressure, whilst describing the steps you took to counter it. Make sure the outcome of that experience was a positive one, so the interviewer will see that you have a sure-fire way in dealing with such problems.

Do you prefer to work independently or in a team?

There is nothing wrong with having a preference for working in groups or working alone, though the best way to phrase your answer would be in the case of listing pros and cons of both sides from your perspective. However, there is no room for you to say you only like one and not the other. Notice the use of the word ‘prefer’. This means the interviewer expects you to state that you are comfortable with both approaches. With that said, try to lean towards being neutral to both methods.

LET'S GET YOU HIRED! ACING YOUR INTERVIEW

4 types of interviews Quick tips to help you prepare for different types of job interviews in the New Norm.

The One-on-one Interviews

Personal or face-to-face interviews are pretty straightforward, as your interviewer asks you a series of questions to evaluate whether or not you’re suited for the job. Some companies prefer using several rounds of one-on-one interviews with different department heads before deciding the candidate’s fate with the company. PS: I f you’re meeting with a recruiter faceto-face, remember to follow the proper standard operating procedures (SOP) as we’re still in the midst of dealing with COVID-19.

iNTERVIEW TIPS • Show your interviewer that you are interested in the job by asking relevant questions. Some simple ones include asking about the role’s day-to-day tasks, the work culture or the role’s career path. • You should also talk about how the job role matches your aspirations, career plans and relevant interests. Enthusiasm is key. • Demonstrate specific examples of the skills required for the role you’re applying for and discuss relevant transferable skills you obtained from any school/work experiences. • Also note that body language is just as important as verbal communication. Maintain a decent level of eye contact throughout the interview, sit upright to exude confidence and remember to smile!

42 |

Section 5.0.indd 42

Video Interviews

Video interviews are a new trend in the graduate recruitment process. In the effort to practice physical distancing due to COVID-19, more recruiters are opting to use virtual interviews. However, due to the potential technical pitfalls and how different they may be depending on the platform used by each employer, they tend to intimidate graduate job seekers. Video interviews may take place “live” (e.g. through Skype) or prerecorded (e.g. video submissions).

iNTERVIEW TIPS Practice makes perfect. Start by getting used to appearing on-screen. Switch on your computer’s webcam and record yourself as though you’re running through a practice interview. • Set the scene by dressing smartly and make the area where you’ll be carrying out the interview look like a professional workplace. • If you are using a Wi-Fi connection, make sure you have a good signal strength so that the video conference doesn’t end unexpectedly. • If you’re taking the call on a laptop, remember to plug it in to a power source – you may be online for longer than you think.

LET'S GET YOU HIRED! ACING YOUR INTERVIEW

Panel Interviews

Panel interviews will typically involve anywhere from three to eight interviewers (usually three for graduate interviews). They will likely consist of a mix of HR personnel, business managers and some departmental specialists. Panel interviews tend to be more rigorous and meticulous than individual interviews as you will be juggling questions from multiple sources. This may sound intimidating but fret not, the interviewers are out to find out the same thing as at any other interview: whether you’re a good fit for the company!

iNTERVIEW TIPS • Maintain direct eye contact with the interviewer asking you a question. Don’t look away! • Address the interviewer by name when speaking to them. One little trick is to get their name cards at the beginning of the session and then arrange them in front of you according to the interviewers’ sitting arrangement. • Don’t panic if one of the interviewers looks bored. Each member on the panel will have different interests, so it’s likely that not everyone may be interested in your response to a question asked. • You will sometimes be asked the same question twice by mistake. Don’t secondguess yourself and always keep to the same version of your story.

Phone Interviews

A phone interview is often a screening exercise where employers check some basic information prior to a face-to-face interview. It is also used to filter through suitable candidates early in the recruitment process. The relative anonymity of a phone interview may allow you to speak to your interviewer without the stress of travelling to an unfamiliar place in professional attire, but that doesn’t mean that you should let your guard down!

iNTERVIEW TIPS • Much of the impact you make will come through your voice, so it’s important that you sound attentive and enthusiastic. • Take note of the keywords in the questions asked; you can refer to them when responding to your interviewer. • Don’t be distracted by your surroundings or lose track of what you want to say next. Avoid “umms” and “uh-huhs” or constant requests to repeat the questions. • Have your CV or completed application next to you in case you need to refer to them during the phone interview. • Choose a conducive, quiet environment for the phone appointment to prevent background noise from ruining your session.

LET'S GET YOU HIRED! ACING YOUR INTERVIEW

Inside Your Interviewer’s Head

I

nterviews are stressful and intimidating. We get that! The trick to keeping calm is to know the questions running through your interviewer’s head, and answering them before they even think about it.

‘Is the candidate really interested in this job?’ The last thing recruiters want is to hire someone who isn’t really interested in the job and may leave in a few months after starting. They also donot want to employ someone who will be unhappy in their role and can add little to the organisation.

How to reassure the interviewer Show your interviewers that you have a realistic grasp of what the job entails by: • Asking about your day-to-day responsibilities and their expectations of you as an employee • Clarifying the interviewer’s response to your questions • Rehashing what was said by the interviewer to show that you understand what is expected of you

‘Does the candidate have the basic skills to get the job done?’

It costs time and money to market a job opening and assess applicants, and even more to train a fresh graduate. Hence, graduates who showcase a ready and extensive set of skills are usually more appealing to managers and recruiters. Moreover, a candidate with experience and skills are more likely to work independently.

How to reassure the interviewer Firstly, demonstrate that you have the specific skills required for the role. Secondly, discuss good transferable skills (communication, commercial awareness, leadership skills, etc) and basic knowledge gained from previous experiences or vocational exposure. Interviewers don’t expect you to have expert knowledge of your job scope or position, but they do want to see if you have the willingness to learn while on the job.

Take note, though, that doing these just for the sake of it won't work – you must be genuinely enthusiastic about this job offer. Make it clear from your reactions that you are serious about your career and hope to stick to your job for some time, at least.

LET'S GET YOU HIRED! ACING YOUR INTERVIEW

‘Can the candidate bring anything new to my organisation?’

When hiring, recruiters must consider the skills, interests and knowledge that their current employees possess, and then decide if you can "add value" to the company.

How to reassure the interviewer Show that you have the skills and qualities that the interviewer is looking for. Find appropriate opportunities to bring it up during the interview, such as when your interviewers offer you a chance to share additional information.

CV

CV

‘Does the candidate have other interviews or job offers lined up?’

Recruiters are always running a talent race with each other – they're constantly competing for the best talent. They will want to know if you're being courted by any other organisation as well so they can timetable their final decision (if they like you) and extend you an offer before someone else does.

How to reassure the interviewer There's no point in lying or pretending you don't (or do) have other opportunities lined up. Don't be shy about talking about other job applications if asked. If they're similar to the one you're interviewing for, it shows that you are really serious about working in that field and that you have put a lot of thought into your job search. However, if you've already accepted a job offer, don't keep shopping around for more prospects! This is highly unethical and may cause recruiters to write you off on the spot if they suspect you of this!

‘How do I feel about this candidate? Are they lying or behaving strangely?’ Experienced recruiters often use their instincts and can tell if something doesn't feel quite "right" during an interview.

‘How well will this candidate get along with colleagues and clients?’ No recruiter wants to hire an individual who cannot sustain a working relationship with their colleagues or clients. Rude, cynical, difficult or arrogant interviewees will be weeded out.

How to reassure the interviewer Stay polite and positive. But most importantly, listen. Take an interest in the other roles and people in the organisation. Ask questions about your potential colleagues or how your applied role may influence theirs. If your position is a client-oriented one, it may also be a good idea to ask about the kind of services or support you will be expected to provide. This shows initiative and dedication on your part to maintain the company's relationship with its clients.

How to reassure the interviewer Be honest. Admit if you don't know the answer to a question instead of trying to lie your way through. Being honest about your shortcomings is better than having recruiters discover that you lied during the interview – even if it's only a small bluff. Also, if you happen to have any mitigating circumstances on the day itself or have suddenly fallen ill, it's wise to flag this up to the interviewer right at the start. That way, the interviewer will understand and make allowances if you look uncomfortable, upset or less enthusiastic than expected.

LET'S GET YOU HIRED! ACING YOUR INTERVIEW

So, You’ve Got

Questions?

The most nerve-wracking moment during an interview is neither at the beginning nor at the in-betweens. It creeps in towards the end of the session, after all is said and done, and it usually sounds like this: “do you have any questions for us?”

I

t might sound like you were asked this question out of courtesy: this candidate has done well throughout the session so let’s at least hear what they want this time, right? WRONG. They have verified your general information, experience and skill set at the beginning of the interview, so this is the part where the employer confirms whether you are really interested in the position offered or just trying your luck. So here are some questions that you might want to ask your interviewers in the next time around:

PRO-TIP! It really helps to ask a few introductory questions before the interview takes place! Ask the HR personnel that called you in for the interview about the interviewing panel. Knowing their positions may help you in strategizing your questions better.

46 |

Section 5.0.indd 46

‘Are there opportunities for professional development? If so, what do those look like?’

This question is as straightforward as it sounds, honestly. At the end of the day, you will always be looking for ways to improve yourself and go further in the career path of your choice as stagnation is a threat. Remember to look into opportunities for growth and find out if the company has a learning and development programme.

‘Who’s the longest working employee here and where are they now?’

Following up to the previous question, the answer to this one can be a dealbreaker on whether you want to be a part of the company. It helps in letting you know whether the company appreciates their deserving employees and getting a foresight of how you will be treated once you’re on board.

LET'S GET YOU HIRED! ACING YOUR INTERVIEW

‘Who was the person in this position and why is it vacant now?’

It is alright for you to know what fate befell the previous owner of the seat they are offering you. Just like how badmouthing previous employers shows your negative personality, this method also works the other way around. It gives you a clue about the overall professionalism in the office.

‘Who will I be working closely with?’ You are not going to be alone in completing your tasks, so it makes sense for you to figure out the people you are going to collaborate with most of the time. Jotting down their names and positions can help you understand the relevancy of their titles to the tasks and evaluate the cross functionality of the roles.

‘Is there anything about my background or résumé that makes you question whether I am a good fit for this role?’

This question shows that you are highly invested in the position offered and committed to view it from the interviewer’s perspective. In the meantime, knowing their answers, you can prepare yourself to answer any concerns that they have regarding you and the position right there and then.

‘What’s your favourite part of working in this company?’

Get a general sense of your interviewer’s opinions about working there. The best guide as to whether it’s going to be a good working place is with the enthusiasm shown in their answers. This can be easily deciphered in their intonation when they’re speaking about the office, the culture or the people around them.

You don’t have to limit yourself to just these questions. If you have any other things that concern you, just ask away. Make sure the questions are straightforward and easy to understand. Remember to show your confidence in what you have to offer and never undersell or oversell yourself while doing so. Good luck!

usiness Process Outsourcing (BPO) is a third-party service provider where organisations may enter into a contract with to carry out services that are required for the organisation to run smoothly. The practice of outsourcing business tasks is done by engaging with the employees of a BPO company who will perform the tasks using their skills and resources. Essentially, shared services provide the same functions. However, unlike BPO, it is an internal service provider across different business units in an organisation. onsultants are problem-solvers for hire: businesses and government agencies bring them on board to solve their most pressing problems. The mysterious world of consulting eludes most people outside the industry but those in the know understand the satisfaction of taking on complex issues that have a real impact on businesses and people. Business and enterprise, government and not-for-profit organisations seek out advisory services from consulting firms on matters ranging from technology, policy, marketing and strategy to people, pricing and products. Typically, a consultant or a consulting team will be called in to advise a senior decision-maker because their staff are too busy to consider long-term strategies, or the problem is too complex and outside the skill sets of the people in charge.

SECTOR SYNOPSES FMCG

C

onsumer goods are any products bought to be used directly by consumers, rather than being bought by manufacturers to be used in the production of other goods. Fast-moving consumer goods (FMCGs) are usually high volume, low-cost products that are sold quickly and in large quantities, such as toiletries, cosmetics, cleaning products, food, and drink. The consumer goods industry is fast-paced and highly competitive; the pace means that changes and results can be seen quickly. Efficiency is key during the processes involved in producing consumer goods to meet demands and maximise returns. In this industry, graduates are likely to go far if they are creative and innovative, and can come up with practical new ideas that will put their employers ahead of the competition.

FUN FACT: According to experts, it’s a stable industry. Tim Morris of Coriolis Research stated, “There’s a saying in the industry that goes ‘everyone has to eat’. To this I would add ‘and wash their clothes and brush their teeth.’ Unlike other industries, FMCG does not suffer from mass layoffs every time the economy starts to dip. You may put off buying a car, but you don’t put off dinner. This lends FMCG a level of job security unknown in other industries.”

FOOD MANUFACTURING

T

he food manufacturing sector in Malaysia is mainly dominated by local small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), although domestic and foreign multinational companies (MNCs) and limited liability companies remain very much involved in the industry as well. With advancements to technology within the food industry, this increases the usage of raw materials, which in turn leads to a wide range of food products. According to the Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA), 10% of Malaysia’s manufacturing output is accounted for by the food manufacturing industry. The amount contributed in 2018 was about RM19.4bil, where processed food was exported to over 200 countries.

With its world-class healthcare services and sophisticated infrastructure, the country practises a dual-tiered healthcare service system: the government-led and funded public sector and the co-existing private sector. With the expected arrival of around two million international healthcare tourists for 2020, the Malaysian Healthcare Travel Council (MHTC) predicts that the amount received next year will surpass RM2bil in hospital receipts, which will lead to an economic impact of RM8bil. In addition, MHTC is launching the Malaysia Year of Healthcare Travel 2020 (MyHT2020) campaign, which aims to label the country as a destination for top-notch healthcare.

While law is one of the most exciting career fields to be part of, it can be competitive: law degrees and follow-on professional qualification routes require high academic standards in order to secure a job. But for those interested in pursuing this career, the rewards are many if you enjoy challenges and are prepared to work hard. In Malaysia, a lawyer is both advocate and solicitor. hile still considered one of the “smaller” sectors in Malaysia, it does offer many career choices for graduates. Within print media, roles such as writers, designers and photographers abound, while radio and television require producers, editors, hosts and production crew. With internet streaming services blurring the line between traditional and new media, full-time jobs such as vloggers or YouTubers are not uncommon. On the more conventional side of things, there are a host of graduate opportunities within advertising, PR, and marketing. However, graduates should note that many of these roles can be very demanding, with a lot of the hard work hidden from view behind the scenes, and require a specific set of skills which take time and experience to develop.

Some of the other more common social services bodies in operation within Malaysia are non-profits that focus on educating specific groups, such as street kids, who require attention and care to help them reintegrate into society and keep them in better-off conditions than they previously were in. Attitude shows how expensive you are. No matter how much talent or skills you have, without a humble attitude, it won’t mean as much. I always use children as an example. All children react to what they’ve been told by their parents and teachers. Without any doubt, they’ll immediately take action. That’s how they learn very fast. But when we grow old, we tend to say, “I know” a lot. If you maintain this kind of attitude, no one will give you advice nor opportunities. From the perspective of a seasoned employee, I can tell you that no one wants to work with such staff. One more thing: be willing to put in the effort. Apply what you’ve learned outside and apply it to what you’re doing within the company. Those who are willing to make time to gain skills are the kind of staff that will be valued in any industry.

New job skills

Video editing skills and graphic design skills. All these off-line skills will be necessary to market the product in our current situation.

Online interviews

Firstly, ensure that your internet speed is decent. Soundcheck must be done. On top of that, wear the proper attire, even though you’re not in the office. Interviewers will be keeping an eye on things like these. Whether the interview is successful or not largely depends on your preparations.

Keep moving forward

Find your passion and explore jobs that give you a sense of purpose. When you do what you like to do, you can work without external motivation. If you are doing what you like to do, you can always be happy. What if you cannot wait to go to work? Your life is much better than those who can only wait for the weekend to come around.

We sometimes don’t really focus on things written on the résumé. We would prefer to meet you and talk to you to gauge whether you’re a good fit for the company. You should be able to tell clearly what your weaknesses are, and you should be ready to answer questions. For example: what was the hardest moment in your life? How did you cope with that situation? Employers want to know if you can go through hardships or not. We’re always looking for staff who can change situations, rather than staff who wait for the situation to change them. If you fall under the latter, you’ll not be able to enjoy your job, because it’ll not be able to make you happy. Always remember: what if you were the employer? What kind of person would you want to hire and work with?

Personal growth

Been working here for 3 years and 7 months

A day in the life

I’m a Health Advisor at Cosmo Goodness Malaysia. My daily tasks are to conduct effective presentations to customers about the products that we offer, provide expert customer service, cultivate a strong relationship with customers to drive business development, and ensure that customers’ issues are resolved in a professional and timely manner. In addition, I perform various marketing duties which include advertising showrooms, word of mouth, and create a fun and lively environment for our customers.

Company culture

I’m very grateful to have the opportunity to work with a Japanese company. The company culture pushes me to work hard and perform well. There will likely be obstacles in the course of my work that I’ll need to tackle head on, but I’m glad to have such great leaders who are willing to guide me with their knowledge and experiences. It allows me to develop the skills and abilities that are hidden even from myself. Plus, all the colleagues here are motivated and very supportive.

Overcoming obstacles

As a health advisor at the showroom, most of my time is spent dealing with hundreds of people each day. Ever since our country began its fight against COVID-19, all of us have been required to comply with the new norm, including in the Cosmo Dr advertising showroom. It started with working from home, and slowly, we resumed our showroom operations through the implementation of the necessary regulations. The challenge in educating not just our customers but

ourselves was quite tough in the beginning. Sanitising hands and chairs, wearing masks, and practising physical distancing had to become a norm to gain back the trust of our customers.

Facing COVID-19

The moment the lockdown was implemented, our management team decided to take drastic action to deal with the pandemic. All of the showrooms announced closures and the contact numbers of customers were gathered for further updates in the future. All staff were asked to work from home. During the lockdown, effective communication played such an important role in the delivery of orders and messages from employers to employees. Our leader, Mr Ryunosuke Ohashi, with his great leadership was able to manage the situation very well.

The new normal

In the beginning, it was quite tough to adapt myself to the new normal, but I had to adjust myself and be open to it. I also had to boost my spirits up during the challenging time by making myself feel more motivated. It helps to always be curious and willing to explore new things, as well as seek support and advice from superiors on the challenges faced.

With this, trust tends to build up and you’ll establish your reputation as a dependable and consistent candidate. Fully focus and concentrate during the interview. It’s important to understand the question asked by the recruiter before you attempt to answer. When it comes to answering questions, be very true to yourself, otherwise the recruiter will sense it.

Keep moving forward

When there is a crisis, there is also an opportunity. Hence, there are job opportunities available. Some businesses took this opportunity to restructure for long term sustainability or are rebuilding their operations to be more competitive. Please don’t let your guard down. You must be good enough and be very well prepared for the interview.

New job skills

Virtual Collaboration You must prepare yourself to work on collaborative platforms with typical gaming features, such as giving or receiving immediate feedback, and completing a series of challenges. You have to demonstrate your participation by showing desired results for the objectives set as a virtual member. Social Intelligence Social intelligence is the capacity for fresh graduates to communicate and form relationships with empathy and assertiveness. This reflects your sensitivity towards the environment, which involves your ability to listen, communicate and adapt. All these social soft skills are essential in producing a productive working environment.

Personal growth

Been working here for 1 year and 1 month

A day in the life

Typically, my daily tasks involve handling tenders and technical inquiries from mechanical and electrical subcontractors. For tenders, I have to specify the suitable materials that adhere to the needed specifications, followed by tabulating and quantifying the total estimated value of the project. Once the tender has been submitted, it would then proceed to the technical and commercial clarifications, where I would be required to furnish any required information from the subcontractors.

Company culture

Working in this company has been a bliss as there is a sense of camaraderie amongst fellow colleagues and superiors alike. This has enabled a greater sense of collaboration as it’s easy to share ideas and receive constructive feedback on what can be further improved while achieving the best results for a certain task at hand. We have a company motto which is “We Work, Manage and Share Together”, and this is truly embodied by all fellow colleagues and this makes working a much more effortless and seamless affair.

Facing COVID-19

During the start of the lockdown, KVC Industrial Supplies did a great job in handling the new normal by transitioning all physical meetings and discussions into virtual formats. By temporarily postponing certain projects, the company progressed into selling essential items such as hand sanitisers and face masks as well as offering disinfecting services. By embracing the virtual format, the new normal has challenged my organisation into thinking of how we could optimise various virtual platforms to connect with customers effectively.

The new normal

It has made me focus more of my time and energy into creating content, handling technical inquiries and solving any issues through an online medium. This has also made me into a more well-rounded employee, as I’m now required to be knowledgeable in video editing as well as copywriting. By exposing myself to different sets of knowledge, I am able to approach a set of problems with an altered perspective, thus enabling a better outcome to be achieved.

Overcoming obstacles

When the Movement Control Order (MCO) first commenced, it was a relatively jarring experience as most of my work would require me to be interacting with my customers and fellow colleagues, and for the first few weeks it was all about realigning my goals and targets to suit the current situation. Since then I have created online content for my company such as product showcase videos and technical write-ups as most of the time spent during the MCO was via screens, thus it was vital to exploit this avenue to reach the target audience. This shows the importance of being versatile when changes are afoot.

Cost Management: On the monthly operating expenses with government subsidy, redeployment to optimise resources and low activities has helped us bring down the expenses. Sales & Marketing: New effort in sales and promotion of essential goods were brought in recently. Thanks to the collaboration between the special team and existing sales team in finding innovative ideas to boost sales despite the tough times. As a result, we are reducing the loss of sales. Community Care: We had launched CSR Programme to primary schools nationwide – we donated RM1 with every box of mask sold at a very affordable price. We had successfully contributed accumulatively at RM510,000.00 to almost 400 schools in 11 states with the overwhelming responses.

Aside from picking up new soft skills, graduates should also be adaptable. A flexible graduate can unlearn, learn, and relearn information by discarding obsolete ones to make room for more current and relevant knowledge and skills. People who find opportunities in an ever-changing environment are those who are actively looking for them. The choice is simple: act or be acted upon. Since change (e.g. COVID-19) is something we can't control, we can only truly rely upon learning to navigate ourselves around change, and adapt to it. We need to do so in order to thrive in the job market.

Attractive applications

Graduates should always find a way to compliment job requirements with the achievements and values obtained from past work experiences or cocurricular involvements. It's vital to align your skillset with the needs of the job opening. One mistake that candidates often make is to try and fit everything in their CV, resulting in a poorly described and overly lengthy CV. Instead, it should be brief, concise, and relevant to the job applied. Another essential point is that every CV should be customised to the position that the candidates are applying for, and never a "One-SizeFits-All".

New job skills

Digital is definitely the way forward. Jobseekers should at least have the necessary knowledge for it and be familiar with the available tools and platforms or the willingness to take up digital up-skilling programmes. This is in line with Maybank’s FutureReady up-skilling programme, aimed at equipping our employees with digital literacy to assure their relevance moving forward.

Good communication skills are crucial when you are working from home, away from your colleagues and supervisors. Being able to articulate and communicate your thoughts in a concise yet clear manner while continuing to stay connected will serve you well in the long-run.

Online interviews

Candidates should not take online interviews lightly. Always be on time and dress appropriately even though you're in the comfort of your own home. Before the interview, candidates should do the same amount of preparation and thorough research on the company and job position that they have applied for. It is also beneficial for candidates to practise answering some of the more commonly asked questions. The internet is a useful tool for fresh graduates to read, research, or even watch relevant videos to upgrade themselves.

Keep moving forward

Be resilient. Take this opportunity to build up your grit and character. Always remember to ask for feedback from recruiters to improve if you are turned down for a job. Keep an open mind and be eager to explore new things. Chances are, you have little understanding towards what you know and not know, and this can be applied to your knowledge about the current market too. Be prepared to seize opportunities that come your way even if they sometimes do not relate to your course of study. This will also be a time to produce your own internship experience instead of just applying for one (e.g. taking online classes, volunteering for projects, etc).

Global Maybank Apprentice

BSc Economics, University College London, UK

Personal growth

Been working here for 10 months

A day in the life

As a Global Maybank Apprentice (GMA), I’m given the opportunity and flexibility to personalise my rotations in different departments of my choice, as an accelerated training requirement in this two-year, on-the-job graduate programme. Before entering the Group Digital Strategy team, I previously worked in the Business Banking division and Global Banking Risk department. My current responsibilities within Digital Strategy include project management for existing digital partnerships within Maybank, research on the digital landscape, and formulation of strategic digital recommendations that the bank may pursue. As a GMA, I’m also involved in special projects such as the design of digital challenges and assessment centres. These projects aim to identify potential talents.

Company culture

As a fresh graduate starting out in Maybank, I'm grateful to receive equal parts of guidance and independent learning. I am in awe at the countless learning opportunities offered, both formal and informal, and in the willingness of Maybankers to share and impart knowledge. The Global Maybank Apprenticeship Programme (GMAP), of which I am a part of, further bolsters my career aspirations through a healthy support system amongst fellow young professionals, should I ever need advice and encouragement.

Overcoming obstacles

Having been accustomed to working in the office, transitioning to fully working from home was a novel idea six months ago. Now, it's my new reality, especially in times of COVID-19.

76 |

Untitled-1 76

Although it was challenging at the beginning, I quickly adapted to the new work environment by adjusting the setup for maximum productivity. Working virtually also means that I can manage multiple responsibilities and get involved in numerous projects, without being physically present. This allows me to manage my time better and communicate effectively with all stakeholders.

Facing COVID-19

Since before the Movement Control Order (MCO), Maybank has taken proactive measures to ensure the safety of its employees, by administering temperature checks and providing masks and hand sanitisers to all Maybankers. Since the onset of the MCO, most teams initially operated from home. As infection rates abated, some groups began working from home with limited access to offices. During the MCO, multiple wellness initiatives were carried out to keep Maybankers connected and to bring people together from all over the globe in an effort to continuously inspire one another and lead a healthy lifestyle.

The new normal

Winston Churchill once said, “Never let a good crisis go to waste”. I try to live up to similar standards by quickly adapting into what we now call the New Normal. Since the MCO, I have been serving my civic duty by spending more time at home. I have been keeping busy with whatever extra time I have by picking up new knowledge relevant to my career in Maybank through the abundant resources online. I have also devoted more time to study for the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA), a finance-related professional certification.

Malayan Banking Berhad (Maybank)

Choice of internship

Ever since I was young, I've always dreamt of working at Maybank for several reasons. Firstly, the company has won multiple awards and recognitions. It is also well known for its humanising mission; hence, this progressive organisation was one I’ve always wanted to be a part of. Being a finance and investment enthusiast myself, I believe this internship programme is in line with my interests and goals. On top of that, Maybank also ensures job security if you perform well during your internship period.

Maybank Young Bankers Internship Programme (MYBIP)

Do's

• Go above and beyond of what is expected of you, and be proactive • Learn to accept constructive criticism to improve yourself • Express gratitude to everyone who has helped you along the way

Don'ts

• Be defined by your course of study – no learnings are wasted learnings • Be afraid to ask questions • Assume any assigned task is trivial

Undergoing an internship is a mandatory step to complete my bachelor’s degree. Having read past participants’ experiences, I expected myself to enrol at the Maybank Academy for the MYBIP trainings, expanding my skill-set and meeting new faces. However, due to the pandemic, those training sessions were converted to virtual sessions, which I found engaging. The Maybankers that I engaged with were extremely helpful and friendly. The sessions were mostly packed with comprehensive insights and wholesome engagements, and prepared us to become full-fledged Personal Financial Advisors (PFAs) at Maybank.

An intern’s responsibility

For now, I'm still in the phase of undergoing virtual trainings. I'll transition into my on-the-job (OTJ) training in my assigned branch soon. The company briefed us about the internship programme, which is well-structured with weekly modules and submissions. As interns, we are expected to assist other Maybankers in their day-to-day tasks, take on responsibilities such as reaching out to clients, and shadow experienced PFAs as they go about their work.

The primary mission for an intern is to be the lead generator at the branch, which means guiding and assisting customers in fulfilling their needs.

Internship experience

It is a missed opportunity for my intake as we did not get to experience the academic environment in Maybank Academy. However, we were fortunate to be able to complete our training virtually. I attended several specially curated workshops which helped me understand the bank and its business a little better. We were given insights into what it is like to be a Personal Financial Advisor (PFA). This provides us with a clearer picture on what is expected once we move into our onthe-job (OTJ) training. I am really excited to soon be able to work with customers at the branch!

Lessons learned

The most important lesson I learnt is to be brave and confident. The only way to stand out from other people and be noticed by others is to ignore the naysayers and to be yourself. It is crucial to speak your mind and ask the right questions. Make sure to be an active participant in discussions and give your full attention during learnings. By doing so, it will be an added advantage for me when I transition into my on-the-job (OTJ) training as I'd have already grasped the basics about the various banking products and operational processes.

Communication Skills Graduate job hunters need to show that they can listen as well as speak out. They need to be able to express themselves concisely to impress recruiters. Effective communication skills in a job interview is essential to achieve success. Be 110% Prepared for Interview Sessions Always do research about your future company. Know where the place of interview is, arrive early, and understand the roles and responsibilities of the job itself. Always be in control of yourself during the interview session.

Engage in Extra-Curricular Activities Participation in extracurricular activities is similar to getting work experience. It shows that you have gained transferable skills that can be applied in the workplace. For example, if you are a mass communication student, you may want to consider joining the university’s student newspaper to experience writing news stories and to understand how the editorial process works.

Attractive applications

Since you have no working experience to speak of, maybe you can focus on your academic achievements. Your academic assignments and projects as well as the activities that you have participated in can give potential employers an idea of your personality, capabilities, and skills.

New job skills

Communication Skills (Listening, Speaking and Writing) Communication skills are perhaps the first set of skills that potential employers will notice. From the initial moment you get in touch with them, employers will be scrutinising the way you behave. This skill can be developed by taking online classes or reading or getting your hands on any free materials on the internet.

Online interviews

Candidates need to be prepared well for the interview. Make sure the session goes well, determine the best professional outfit for the interview, check that your internet connection is stable, and find a location e.g. a secluded room that is free from distractions and noises. But before all that, you should conduct research on the employer and prepare responses to expected interview questions. Also, formulate a few questions that you would want to ask them.

Keep moving forward

Don’t give up on your job search! Be creative and smart. Always try to equip yourself with new skills, go for trainings, and take courses or classes – any medium of learning during this pandemic. Grab any job. Any job is better than no job at all. Last but not least, don’t get discouraged and don’t give up!

A day in the life

As an analyst under Strategic Planning Department, my day-to-day task consists of responding to internal inquiries regarding the division’s business plan. I also deal with a handful of ongoing projects that involved external parties. Additionally, I do some research on potential collaborations and update my team on the current pharmaceutical news locally and also globally. I am also in charge of updating the weekly WIP to ensure that our current projects are running smoothly.

Company culture

Pharmaniaga emphasises on its core values of Respect, Integrity, Teamwork, and Excellence. This shows in our working environment. We have a very heavy workload and my department relies a lot on teamwork as we are a small team within a big company. As employees of Pharmaniaga, we push towards excellence as we always want to be the best. The company believes that running a clean operation is crucial and it also believes that its employees are its best assets. Hence, taking care of the staff is the company’s highest priority.

Overcoming obstacles

When the COVID-19 pandemic hit, Malaysia went into lockdown and everyone had to start working from home. Initially, it was great as I got the opportunity to work within the comfort of my own home. However, it changed quickly because I couldn’t focus as much as I could in the office. I immediately had to do something to change this and created a workspace.

Another challenge I faced was when our government lifted the lockdown policies. It was hard to maintain physical distancing in the office since I was not used to it. Nevertheless, I made sure that my workspace was six metres apart from the rest.

Facing COVID-19

Pharmaniaga reacted quickly when COVID-19 hit. They reduced the number of workforce in the office to guarantee the safety of employees. Only essential staff – mostly warehouse workers – were required to be at the office. The company also provided boxes of masks to employees, especially to those who couldn’t afford it. Not only did Pharmaniaga make sure that it provided essentials during the pandemic to employees, but it also worked together with other GLCs to distribute PPE, masks, sanitisers, etc to hospitals and clinics.

The new normal

I had to take some time to adjust to the new normal just like everyone else. Part of my job is to meet with potential clients and the new normal did not allow that. I had to shift physical meetings to virtual meetings, which also was a struggle as the internet connection wasn’t great. However, I managed to push through and made the new normal a part of my everyday life.

Interning during the COVID-19 pandemic gives me an advantage. It exposes me to experiences that other interns may not get the chance to experience. Based on our current situation, there are many challenges, such as interns being required to work from home. In the future, I expect to discover where my career path leads me and experience in-person the actual work as well as learn how to work with people in this industry.

An intern’s responsibility

My daily tasks are to assist and perform clerical duties such as maintaining files; organising, sorting, and creating PowerPoint presentations; and drafting HR-related reports. Besides, I assist the HR team in planning special events and induction for new employees who have just joined the company. At the end of it, I’ll prepare the Induction Summary. I also assist in sending out birthday wishes to employees who are born within the current month. Other than that, for SOCSO claims, I need to complete staff details and make sure that all documents needed are in order before submitting them to SOCSO.

Internship experience

It has been great so far because I love to do all the work that has been assigned to me. One good example would be the temperature screenings and sanitising that I conduct once a week, before employees in the organisation enter the premises. During this COVID-19 pandemic, I may not experience the same opportunities as other interns because many activities have been postponed. But I don’t feel bad because I still get the valuable opportunity that others may not get. No matter the situation we have to face, we just have to remain positive and be focused.

Lessons learned

I have learned to step outside of my comfort zone. Trying out new opportunities has made me challenge myself. And I’ll always try, even though I have no idea how to do a certain task. For me, this is the best time to learn and develop. My internship has shown me what I’m good at and what I’m not good at, very quickly, and it gives me time to improve. I have learned how to apply and transfer the skills and knowledge that I have learned from my syllabus. I have also learned not to be shy to ask any question to my co-workers.

Fresh graduates are akin to blank slates, and when your résumé is in a pile with other graduates’ for the same job, the only thing that differentiates would be your university, and your degree. Hence, tell us what you have done, or achieved, other than just your academics. This is where your extracurricular activities come into play. Maybe you’ve learnt another language, one used at the headquarters of a Multinational Corporation (MNC), or you’ve volunteered at an NGO before. It’s these small details that tell us WHO you are, and not WHAT you are. It’s all that matters for a fresh graduate; attitude.

New job skills

Online interviews

First, know the company, the history – to know the culture, the leaders – to know their direction and strategy. Second, check your mobile data or Wi-Fi connection. Is the room bright enough? Is there backlight? In the interview, speak clearly and choose your words carefully. Don’t rush through your replies as you may be misheard. Don’t fidget too much when you see yourself in the camera. Ask relevant questions, and your knowledge of the company would come in handy here. Be mindful of what you wear. As for me, I’d rather play it safe by being overdressed than to be too casual or underdressed for the interview.

Keep moving forward

It’s never easy looking for your first job, and more so at the height of a pandemic where unemployment is high and consumer sentiment is low. I’d encourage fresh graduates not to be too picky of jobs. Even if you’re not waking up to your dream job every morning, you’re learning and picking up new skills. Ideal plans don’t always happen, so you need to improvise your plans. Keep your dreams close to heart, and persist to work towards it. A detour leads you through a scenic path. In the end, you’ve seen more, and done more than your peers.

For decades, employers have listed skills such as global literacy, critical thinking, solution-oriented thinking, design thinking, and creativity as crucial. Astonishingly, these skills are still very much in demand. These are skills that don’t come just through reading, you need practice. So, if you have spare time, do volunteer in an NGO; it would provide you with some understanding of how to manage a project, and that includes problemsolving. You can even run a free tuition class for high school kids, and you’ll improve on your delivery of ideas.

Evelyn Yap Jia Hoey, 31 Ecommerce Manager Bachelor of Law

Been working here for 1 year and 3 months

A day in the life

My job is to grow the Samsung brand on online platforms like Lazada and Shopee, and to understand the overall online landscape and its business demands for mobile and consumer electronics. This means tailoring online campaigns, for example, the Samsung Super Brand Day, to cater to the specific needs of our online customers. Being responsible for the sales and marketing of all Samsung products on online platforms in Malaysia provides me with opportunities and exposure to the constant changing nature of online shopping, which has always been a professional interest of mine.

Company culture

Before joining Samsung, I worked for an online shopping platform with many new staff members, and the work processes frequently changed to adapt to the company’s demands; I grew used to that work culture. When I joined Samsung, it seemed like I was stepping into a new world. Many of my colleagues have years of experience and are very knowledgeable about the industry. I was eager to learn from them, and they are always more than willing to share. My new team also has similar working backgrounds with me, so their support was a great help.

Overcoming obstacles

During the COVID-19 pandemic, the demand for online shopping skyrocketed. It was the solution for many of our dear customers in a time of need. As part of Samsung’s online team, we passionately pushed each other to provide the best for our customers despite having our own personal commitments at home, which was also our workplace during the lockdown.

82 |

To cope, we held weekly check-ins with each other to understand the difficulties and challenges each colleague was facing. It was important that we put our own work aside for an hour and focused on what the team needed.

Facing COVID-19

I would highly commend our HR team for their fast action during this crisis. All staff members were promptly informed regarding any new government regulations and received daily updates on the pandemic situation. Samsung’s leadership also truly impressed us as our management team quickly changed our operations to ensure all the correct SOPs were followed as a joint effort to keep everyone as safe as possible. As a staff member, it was helpful to feel reassured by our company at a time of uncertainty, which Samsung did very well.

The new normal

I think this question would have had a completely different answer 10 years ago. It’s a blessing that we’re living in the age of connectivity, where everyone is just a call (or video call) away. Honestly, the idea of relying heavily on technology seemed a bit daunting to me at first, but we are definitely heavily equipped with the tools we need to create a new working norm for ourselves. I love that this is the type of norm we are choosing to practise to keep each other safe during this crisis.

While waiting for my graduation, I believed that pursuing an internship was the best option for me to be prepared mentally and physically for the smooth transition from student life to working life. My expectations before starting the internship were pretty simple! I expected to make use of my skills and was looking forward to being challenged and stretched outside of my comfort zone.

An intern’s responsibility

I was assigned to the Consumer and Market Insights team, and my tasks were focused on two major areas – consumer and market! At the start of my workday, I had to prepare a report on relevant updates and key news concerning Malaysia and the Asian economy with a specific focus on the technology industry. Moreover, I further supported the team by providing findings from a couple of research papers. My task was to compile these findings into an easily digestible form, so other teams

could understand better and apply this information in their operations and strategies. Occasionally, I did some side research on specific consumer segments to understand them better. I also helped to translate documents from English to Malay and vice versa.

Internship experience

As the COVID-19 situation in Malaysia is still in a worrisome state, Samsung is taking precautionary steps to protect the safety of its employees. The company has employees working in the office on a rotational basis, which allows me to experience working from home and in the office. Both situations have their pros and cons. While working from home can offer more flexibility in my working hours and the utmost in comfort, it limits social interaction within the team. But these concerns are solved through digital solutions, such as online meetings, and it helps to avoid any feelings of detachment that may occur when you are working from home.

Lessons learned

To sum up the past few months, an important aspect that I’ve picked up is agility! You have to be quick and sharp. These are the skills that I am currently improving on. Honestly, it is quite challenging sometimes to keep up with the pace, but you have to try to do it and ask for help if you can’t manage. Be open and willing to do tasks that you are not familiar with to gain new knowledge and acquire new skills! My supervisor is an outstanding mentor, guiding me well through my internship and allowing me to solve tasks independently.

Preparation needs to start way before you create your résumé for a job application, it starts early during your varsity days. You need to ensure that you get an education and strive to do well academically, not just passing in exams. In the current culture, academic performance is an important element, but not the only element used in gauging a candidate’s capability. You also need to be equipped with soft skills – displaying confidence, good communication, leadership, agility, resilience, interpersonal etc. These skills can be obtained through participation in college or university activities, besides just attending lectures. Moreover, these skills can also be developed through immersing yourself into events, parties, internship etc. There are lessons to learn even in the fun stuff too!

Attractive applications

I like to see a balance of academic and co-curricular achievements since both are important. When I review a résumé, I look at the style of it: Is it going with a text book style? Is there creativity? Or is just facts and figures? Other than reviewing the résumé, I’d look at the candidate’s result transcripts too, as a high GPA scorer may not do well in the needed subject matter for the job. And this needs to be complemented by great co-curricular achievements – leadership roles, etc.

New job skills

The current graduates grew up in a mostly 'digitised' world, with technologies like mobile phones, internet, touch screens etc, where there may be a lack of (formal) human interaction, except perhaps with family members. I would strongly suggest that the current graduates enhance as many aspects of their communication, interpersonal and emphatic skills as possible. In the working world, for most jobs, human interaction is a must, and you’ll not be able to avoid that.

Online interviews

First of all, candidates should find a spot with good connectivity and familiarise themselves with the tools to be used. Assuming that this is a video screening, ensure that your face is always facing the screen (to demonstrate your focus and attention), and the rest will be like a normal in-person interview – speak with confidence, clarity, etc.

Keep moving forward

The economy of the world will never end, and there’ll always be vacancies and economic opportunities. Just believe that the right job is waiting for you, and remember to learn from your previous interviews. At the end of an interview session, it’s crucial to ask for feedback on your performance and for areas of improvement. In the meantime, don’t be choosy, go with any opportunity that arises.

A day in the life

My main role as Technical Sales Manager is to provide technical support associated with pre-sales activities. I am required to possess extensive knowledge of the products in my portfolio, keeping up-to-date with our products through frequent webinars, tele-conferences with HQ, social media and documentation in the intranet. My job also includes setting up equipment and conducting simulation tests as part of promotion activities and creating knowledge awareness for the customers. The part where I am required to manage my customers is what makes this job interesting!

Company culture

With digitalisation, a lot of daily tasks are handled online eg HR support, IT support or administration. Most of these tasks require extensive computer use. When first confronted with these tasks, it can be quite overwhelming, especially when required to use new tools and learn new skills. Fortunately, my colleagues are friendly and willing to provide guidance and tips and tricks which enabled me to get up to speed, especially in the first few months without any problems!

Overcoming obstacles

During the COVID-19 pandemic, we are encouraged to work from home. Job-wise, it’s an easy transition because the tools used for work are already available to us. All the necessary software and applications were installed and running on laptops even before the pandemic started. Basically, I just need an internet connection and a workspace at my home.

As my job involves meeting people and having faceto-face discussions, these can still be done via teleconferencing. The downside of this is that we lost the human connection that we usually have during face-toface meetings.

Facing COVID-19

When the lockdown was implemented, the company followed the guidelines and instructions given by the government. We have daily updates on the COVID-19 pandemic situation by our very own EHS department, which is very helpful! The management kept us informed with updated company policies and SOPs in place. Our superiors are understanding as they recognise that we have families to take care of and our working schedule and deadlines have to be adjusted to accommodate the extra workload from home.

The new normal

Gone were the days when we greet people with a firm handshake and a pat on the shoulder as a show of encouragement and appreciation. We have to make adjustments in our daily routines and find new ways to express our emotions. Keeping in mind that with physical distancing, we cannot lose our business connections. The technological tools do help with physical distancing but we need to make use of these tools to be socially connected as well.

A day in the life

My day-to-day tasks as a proposal engineer mainly consists of reading technical specifications, designing automation systems and providing proposals to clients. Even though I am still new to this role, an important aspect that I’ve discovered to be essential is to have good communication skills. I need to communicate internally with my team on understanding the requirements and assigning tasks. It is also important to liaise externally with clients, understand their problems and propose the best solutions for them.

Company culture

The work environment at Siemens is definitely healthy. When I joined in 2018, I felt welcomed by everyone. I came in as a fresh graduate, this was my first job, and I had no experience of the industry. Nevertheless, my colleagues helped me a lot in understanding how the organisation works and also in settling down. Everyone has their own goals, and we use this as motivation to push each other every day to become better in our individual roles.

Overcoming obstacles

Creating a proposal requires a lot of communication. Before I start designing any systems, I usually will have a discussion internally with the team on how to manage the task given. Luckily, I have a great and helpful team who’s willing to help and guide me, since I am still new in my role. It’s also important to have a good relationship with clients to understand their needs and help them solve their problems. With the recent COVID-19 situation, all these communication and discussions were done online.

86 |

Facing COVID-19

Even though this pandemic took everyone by surprise, I think Siemens did a great job in handling the situation. When Malaysia was under lockdown, everyone started working from home. Daily online updates internally and discussions externally with customers are mostly done through Microsoft Teams. After the lockdown, employees came back to the office in batches. We carried out alternate rotations with half on Team A and the other half on Team B while following the SOP, which includes physical distancing. This strategy ensures that when there is a situation, there is still another team to support it.

The new normal

Nothing really changed for me, besides following the SOP set by my company and physical distancing. Everyone here in Siemens are goal-driven, and we understand what is needed from us to achieve our goals. Having everyone on the same page makes it a lot easier to work together and get the job done. There’s really nothing much you can do about this pandemic situation. It is definitely affecting everyone globally, so I just have to keep my head up and continue moving forward with the help of my colleagues.

Recruiters spend an average of 7 seconds to review an individual’s résumé! An experienced recruiter has a very trained eye from reviewing hundreds of applicants, and knows exactly what they are looking for, so here is some advice to make your résumé stand out: There are four types of résumés: • Chronological • Functional/skill-based • Combination • Targeted For fresh graduates with limited work experiences, opt for functional/skillsbased résumé format. Highlight the academic achievements, projects, and relevant internship or part-time experiences in chronological order. Always include your email address, phone number and links to your online profiles. Use keywords and graphics/tables/ bullet points to list down your skill sets.

My role as Senior L&D is to maximise our Customer Experiences Specialists’ effectiveness by preparing them with thorough product knowledge, first-level system troubleshooting and problem-solving to provide positive customer service and experiences. To ensure the training's effectiveness, I track the performance from the weekly and monthly analyses – typically on the technical skills of our call centre employees. The corresponding training materials, process guides and assessments are developed based on the analyses to bridge the gaps for improvement in our team. Furthermore, it is also my responsibility to conduct new joiner orientation and ongoing trainings to provide them with the resources and assistance before they start in the call floor.

Company culture

In TDCX, we're like a family; everyone at the company is like brothers and sisters. I'm grateful to have a bunch of helpful colleagues. Whenever I need help, they will pop up and say, "Sure, Kent, let me help you with this!". Also, not forgetting our supportive management team that prepared great career development plans for everyone at TDCX. The company considers our mental health as a top priority by designing the workplace in such a way that it is fun and comfortable. You will never find a better working space like TDCX elsewhere.

Overcoming obstacles

When COVID-19 worsened in March, our management prepared everyone to work from home within 48 hours. The challenge that I faced when working from home is that it gets a little bit lonely sometimes as I am working alone

88 |

in my own space. To overcome this, my manager started performing daily hurdles to check out how everyone is doing, and we create fun activities together at the end of each day. It was very thoughtful of my manager to have this hurdle because I know that my friends are supporting me on the other side of the screen.

Facing COVID-19

When the government announced MCO during March, TDCX immediately implemented the Work From Home arrangement for all staff within 48 hours. The company was fast and efficient in putting the pandemic procedures in place. I have been working from home since March. Sometimes we would need to return to the office for certain matters and TDCX would ensure everyone adheres to the SOP by practising social distancing and provide all staff with sufficient hand sanitizers and masks in the office. Our company takes its employees’ health as a priority.

The new normal

Adjusting to the new normal was very tough at the beginning because we'd usually conduct the training sessions face-to-face with ample interactions and engagements. We transformed all our programmes virtually and had to think about how to retain our audience's attention on a virtual platform. My manager provided us with various tools, techniques and activities that we can implement to keep the audience entertained, at the same time, have a fruitful session. With all the preparations done, our training sessions are even more effective via the virtual platform!

Do's

Don'ts

• Waste the opportunity to learn • Forget your responsibilities • Be shy to ask questions

I was looking for an internship that will greatly benefit my career progression. I applied to TDCX because it's a large company with many years of experience. The BPO industry is very new to me; therefore, working at TDCX would be an excellent opportunity for me to gain new knowledge and experience in the field. Addition to this, I believe with TDCX's long-running history in the BPO industry, I'd be involved in a well-developed system to run their business, along with great mentors.

Deciding to intern

I am a person who craves to learn and improve my skills overall. I was excited and nervous at the same time, especially when I'm stepping out of my comfort zone. I hope that I would learn more about the BPO industry internally and understand how the management process works.

Internship experience

My internship experience has been very fruitful! Although it has only been one month, I have learned so much more than I expected. Being consistent and detailoriented has been an essential skillset. Everyone at TDCX has been very welcoming and friendly, and this opportunity made me understand the importance of leadership and management.

Lessons learned

The most important lesson I've learnt during my internship is to strive for progress and not perfection. It's good to ask more questions and be more involved in discussions and projects. In the beginning, I was afraid of making mistakes, but then I realised it is the only way for me to learn. Keeping a notebook has been very helpful for me to keep track of the things I have to do. I can always go back to it for reference whenever I need to.

An intern’s responsibility

There are a few reports that I'm responsible for. My colleagues were very helpful and patient in guiding me step by step. The reports that I'm handling are for daily and monthly operations report purposes. There's also some ad hoc work; hence it's always important to be focused and ready.

EMPLOYERS' EXPECTATIONS TNG Digital Sdn Bhd

Getting hired

As a fresh graduate, you should be focusing on exploring internships or part-time job opportunities to gain working experience, especially in acquiring fundamental skills like communication and teamwork. There are many ways to land yourself a first job or internship, such as sharing your résumé with your university, searching online or attending career events. Raise your visibility by creating a solid LinkedIn profile. There are lots of recruiters, and a few from TNG Digital too, who will notice profiles that fit the vacancy, especially those that have indicated “open to work”. Other than that, you could also email the recruiter.

Change is the only constant, especially in the fast-evolving technology landscape. Since the start of the pandemic, the world has seen a digital transformation unlike any other. Job seekers should demonstrate knowledge of digital trends that are taking place. They would need to be knowledgeable in using social media tools to connect professionally in the job market, while demonstrating an adaptable attitude to suit the landscape of the new norm.

Get familiarised with tools used for virtual meetings, such as Microsoft Teams and Zoom. Keep yourself updated on developments in emerging areas, such as artificial intelligence (AI) and internet of things.

Online interviews

Candidates should ensure that they have the necessary equipment to conduct online interviews. The environment in which you conduct the interview will be important too. Find a quiet place for an interview, free of distractions. Log in earlier, dress smart, and ensure the network is stable. Give us a short introduction of yourself, keep it simple and informative. Highlight your achievements and what you can contribute to the company. As a fresh graduate, you should display a willingness to learn and a positive attitude. Most importantly, research the company you are applying to and study the job scope details.

Keep moving forward

Be proactive in finding opportunities to grow. Learning and acquiring skills is a lifelong process and by being a fresh graduate, you are required to set yourself on that path to success. Opportunity reveals itself to the prepared mind. Even in the midst of a global pandemic, keep a positive outlook and be aware of opportunities that crop up. Keep an open mind and be adventurous enough to take up opportunities in different fields. This will only serve to expand your repertoire of skills and knowledge. Fresh graduates should not be focusing on a good paying job right out of school. Be open-minded enough to acquire invaluable experience with every opportunity given. Lastly, have fun embarking on this exciting journey!

A day in the life

I oversee the technical implementation and direction of the payment business scenarios and merchant integration with the Touch ‘n Go eWallet system, while leading a team of 18 software developers, working together to introduce more features that will serve the needs of the general public through our app. My days are spent working closely with the business and product teams through discussions and brainstorming sessions, and translating the ideas into workable technical solutions to support new business needs. At the same time, I work on minimising tech debt, improving efficiency, and developing our people in terms of skillset and mindset.

Company culture

As the Touch ‘n Go eWallet serves the entire nation, the work culture here is fast-paced. We need to be nimble enough to respond to changing market requirements, especially when an unexpected situation like the COVID-19 pandemic takes place. Being a fintech start-up, we often venture into new territory, so self-leadership, innovation, and a desire for continuous improvement is critical in order to succeed. Teamwork, unity, and being supportive of each other form the backbone of life at TNG Digital. A cord of three strands is not easily broken; working cohesively is what pulls us through the rough spots.

Overcoming obstacles

Working from home has its merits, but it was important for me to maintain self-discipline and minimise distractions during that time. I had to manage my time wisely as the line between work and personal life started to blur. Communication between team members was challenging during the pandemic, but this also presented a good opportunity to adapt to a new style of communication, and to address concerns that were not apparent prior to the pandemic due to us having the luxury of being in the same physical space.

Facing COVID-19

We initiated a full work-from-home policy starting late March until May, after which we split into three different teams to avoid crowding in the office. For our day-to-day tasks, we were familiar with remote working tools, such as video conferencing even prior to that, so the transition to a fully remote working model was not particularly disruptive. There were adjustments initially, such as adopting the use of digital whiteboards. Fortunately, the organisation settled into a steady rhythm rather swiftly.

The new normal

I was fortunate not to have my career affected by the pandemic, although I couldn’t say the same for many of my friends and family. While this situation is challenging for many, the pandemic nudged many out of complacency and spurred innovation in business, now that we are compelled to go digital in order to survive. For those of us who still have our jobs, I believe it is our duty to carry them out diligently, be thankful, and support those around us who are affected.

As a Software Engineering student, I am always fond of technology and what it can do to improve our lives. I tried to search for organisations that fit my own interests. I subsequently stumbled across job listings from TNG Digital on gradmalaysia and thought the company was a good place to kickstart my career because the vision and mission of the company fits what I am looking for.

Do's

• Be creative. Try finding new ways to perform/complete a task assigned to you • Take initiative to solve tasks and speak out on obvious problems when you see one • Be curious. Ask questions when you are stuck on a task

Don'ts

• Be too afraid, try to get as much out of it as you can • Be silent when encountering problems • Be discouraged when working on difficult tasks

92 |

Honestly speaking, I only came looking for an internship because of my university’s requirements. Looking back though, I can see why universities encourage their students to pursue internships. It gets us ready for the real deal. It was a good experience for me to learn about and get used to working life. My expectations were quite high for a company, such as TNG Digital – one of the leaders in the e-wallet business. I expected TNG Digital to teach me a lot more about real-world use of technologies and the applications than what I learnt during my time in university. I’m happy to say that my company did not disappoint.

An intern’s responsibility

As a Risk Quality Analyst intern, my daily work revolves around manually testing new products and features of the TNG e-wallet mobile application. It was quite tedious at first, but I got over it by using my knowledge in programming to automate these tasks for the team and myself. It reduced a lot of my workload, which in turn gave me time to focus more on learning about the non-technical side of things such as planning and processing.

Internship experience

The COVID-19 pandemic really impacted how things are normally done within the company. Employees are required to work from home, and all communication is carried out online. It really is a different experience from what I expected considering the suddenness of the outbreak, but it was manageable. Some handy tips that I can give would be to learn how to communicate effectively through text and speech. Try to keep your words concise to avoid misunderstandings and avoid taking up too much of people’s time in reading huge walls of text.

Lessons learned

Everyone must start out somewhere once they graduate from university, and internships are a way to help you get equipped for the real world. Creativity, taking initiative, and a learning mindset are important takeaways during my time as an intern. With these three concepts in mind, you would be able to tackle any tasks thrown at you during your internship. When it gets tough, do not be too discouraged as experience is gained through hardship, which would in turn pay off when you get to land your dream job in the future.

Getting hired

In this day and age, to be noticed online is the first step to securing a job. Graduates should diversify their resume on various job-seeking platforms such as LinkedIn, Jobstreet or the ATS (Application Tracking System) of each company. The more platforms a fresh graduate deposits to, the higher the chances they will get recruited.

There are many opinions on how one should structure their resume, but in my experience, less is more. Candidates don’t need to overpopulate their resume with elaborate designs unless they’re applying for Graphic Designer roles. That being said, many online platforms now allow candidates to share their design portfolios through links. Populate the first page of your resume with essential details such as: • Academic Details • Final Year Projects • Notable Achievements and Leadership Positions held in your alumni Recruiters will generally only spend three minutes to decide whether to proceed or reject a candidate for a phone interview.

Employers generally gravitate towards graduates who have special IT skills aside from being able to use standard Microsoft applications. While academic results are important, having some knowledge about design software (e.g Canva, Adobe PS, After Effect) and data analysis tools (e.g Power BI, Tableau) would make a candidate stand out more to employers. Consider these special IT skills as the secret sauce, and you will be able to use it to make yourself stand out from the crowd. Good academic results are great, but a candidate with these additional IT skills is more attractive.

Online interviews

Having a good internet connection is essential during an online interview, as you'll not be able to communicate well if the connection is disrupted. Many of the first impression tips still apply here. While the interview is conducted at home, candidates still need to dress up professionally. Some interviewers may utilise a framework in asking their interview questions, like the STAR interview approach. I've provided sample questions for your reference below: Situation: Could you provide a situation where you resolved a conflict with a college partner during your projects? Tasks: Can you provide us with a list of tasks that you assigned to the individual project team members that led to your project completion? Actions: What actions did you take to lead to the desired outcome? Results: How did you measure the success of the results you achieved in your projects?

Keep moving forward

One way to think about job hunting is finding the right playground (company) and waiting for your turn to play. Sometimes, you may have identified a suitable playground. Still, there are others ahead of you waiting to play, and the timing isn't right. This is when you need to persevere elsewhere while waiting for your turn to play. While waiting, try to observe how others (staff in the company) play and adopt the skills and behaviours of the staff in that company. Reapply when the time is right, and you will be called up to play. Your struggles today will be your strengths tomorrow.

There's a level of discipline in everything we do to prevent mistakes so that we can move forward faster and continue improving. We also practise good values of 'Honesty, Integrity and Transparency' to educate our employees on how corrupted or shady practices can crumble an organisation. Top Glove also prioritises the physical, mental and financial health of our employees. Our Chairman always reminds us that we can only do well when we are fundamentally healthy.

Facing COVID-19

Top Glove’s foresight and vital planning have undoubtedly helped cushion the blow of the pandemic on our production lines. We have set up in-house raw material plants that have helped ease the impact on our supply chain. Top Glove’s investment in automation & digitalisation has also further improved the productivity and quality of overall production, as well as reduced the company’s dependence on labour. Back in 2001, we used to require 9 workers to produce a million pieces of gloves, today, we only need 2 workers for the same number of gloves.

The new normal

Unlike other businesses, the demand for gloves has been busier than ever due to the impact of COVID-19. Top Glove is running at maximum capacity and working extra hard to meet customer demands all around the world. While it is physically exhausting, it has also allowed me to maximise my learning opportunities during this period. As a fresh graduate, I appreciate my job at Top Glove especially since many of my peers are facing unemployment due to business shutdowns.

Overcoming obstacles

Top Glove is an important industry for the current pandemic. Still, Top Glove was not spared the situational difficulties of the COVID-19 pandemic. The company has not taken COVID-19 lightly and put in many preventive measures to curb the spread of this infectious disease. For example, we have conducted most of our meetings virtually to reduce the need to travel between factories. Besides, we have also enforced strict wearing of face masks, and social distancing practises among our employees.

INTERN INSIGHTS

Top Glove Sdn Bhd

Choice of internship

When deciding on my internship, the first thing that came to my mind was Top Glove as I wished to experience corporate life. After discovering that Top Glove is the world’s largest manufacturer of gloves, I encouraged myself to apply for an internship here to gain experience from an established global brand. Top Glove has been operating for 29 years now. I believe that pursuing my internship here will be beneficial to me as it can widen my perspective on international business operations.

Deciding to intern

Top Glove Sdn Bhd

Vivian Fung Jing Yun, 20 Department Marketing

Internship Programme Trainee, Marketing

Do's

• Always be punctual and prepared, especially for meetings and appointments • Be positive. It's important to stay motivated and perform better • Get as much exposure as possible to various parts of the organisation

Don'ts

• Be afraid to ask questions – learn something new and get the most out of your internship • Repeat the same mistakes – it’s important to learn from them • Stay in your comfort zone – you’ll miss out on great opportunities

The reason why I decided to pursue an internship is to gain first-hand experience in the working world before graduating. In addition to that, I applied for a Marketing internship as I wanted to understand the role of a marketing department in a company and how the department contributes to the overall company growth. Another reason is to develop and enhance my soft skills such as communication, problem-solving, teamwork and so on, which can help me perform in a dynamic environment and fare well in the working world.

Internship experience

Adjusting to the “new normal” is a new experience for everyone, including myself. Thankfully, the glove industry hasn’t slowed down. Top Glove has taken the necessary measures to ensure the safety of its employee at the workplace. I have been able to experience both working from the office and working from home. Working from home has been a unique experience. I have faced several challenges while doing so, such as dealing with distractions, communication issues, poor internet connection, but overall, it has been a memorable experience.

Lessons learned

The most important lesson I've learnt throughout my internship is thinking out of the box. Today's market is always in a state of flux. To adapt to these changes effectively, we need to anticipate problems and be adaptable. While a traditional classroom setting only provides theoretical methods to solve problems, I was given the opportunity to understand and apply theories from the textbook to real situations during my internship.

An intern’s responsibility

As Top Glove exports to over 195 countries worldwide, I was assigned to the team in charge of the Colombian market. I was entrusted with the task of approaching our potential customers from Colombia and handling customer enquiries. My daily tasks involved providing excellent customer service by ensuring prompt communication of information regarding our products and services. Besides that, I assisted my mentor in tracking customers' payment status and future order structures based on customer requirements.
