LET'S GET YOU HIRED! DECIDING YOUR CAREER CHOICE
Transitioning from Student to Young Professional If you find yourself dreading life after graduation due to the uncertainty, have no fear. Shiffa Aziz shares a few ways you can deal with leaving your university life behind.
Manage your money
C
hange is never easy. We all experience it, as change is inevitable. During this period of uncertainty, you may be overwhelmed by the pressure of becoming a working adult. You’ve had your fair share of aunties and uncles telling you, “If you think college is hard, just wait until you start working.” Although, not enough people tell you how to cope with this transition. We’ll take it from here.

How To Get Hired 2020
Ah, personal finance and budgeting. It’s every college student’s least favourite item of discussion. However, if you don’t want to be about that #brokelife anymore, then it is time to start planning. Pop quiz: As a working adult, you will be receiving your pay check at the end of each month. Do you a) spend it all at once; or b) put some aside? Let’s hope your answer was ‘b’, because you will have bills to pay, debts to settle, and savings to keep for the future. You can track your monthly expenditure by constructing a budget sheet, which can easily be done with Microsoft Excel.
LET'S GET YOU HIRED! DECIDING YOUR CAREER CHOICE
Maintain your work-life balance Whether you plan to have a nine-to-five job, be a freelancer, or start your own business, you always need to remember: there is more to life than work. Balancing your personal life and work can be harder than you think. It’s easy to fall prey to revolving your life around your job and eventually becoming a workaholic. Do make time for the things you love. This could be anything, from hanging out with your friends at the mamak, to binging Netflix shows at home. You will find that many companies out there do emphasise on work-life balance as well, because they know that a happy employee is a productive employee!
Keep your friends close… …and your enemies closer? Nah, not in this instance. Chances are, you and your chums will be graduating at the same time, and even if they aren’t, you should still keep in close contact with them. You’ve stuck together through thick and thin, and you can continue to do so by supporting each other through all the trials and tribulations that have yet to come. It doesn’t end there though. While you maintain good relationships with your old friends, don’t forget to make new friends at your workplace. By surrounding yourself with people who care about you, you have a strong support system to fall back on when the going gets tough.
Realign your goals As a student, one of your main priorities is passing your examinations with flying colours each semester, so you’d be able to flaunt that graduation scroll at the end of your study in uni. After that’s done, what then? Have you given any thought to your long-term career goals? Take some time to make these decisions. This is a new learning curve for you, so be sure to deal with any concerns you have about your career choice. It is a chance to discover yourself; be it by finding out which career path is the most suitable one for you, or by determining where your passion lies.
Luckily for you, we’ve taken the liberty to ask current working professionals how they managed to deal with their transition from college to the workplace! Head on over to the Employer Hub section and check out the Career Corner profiles to find out more!
Part of what makes change difficult is that we are often so deep-rooted within our comfort zone, we neglect to think about the consequences of being underprepared when the time comes for a change. Which is why it is essential for you to not panic, breathe, and deal with this transition as smoothly as possible.

LET'S GET YOU HIRED! DECIDING YOUR CAREER CHOICE
Planning Your Career
Planning a career path is more than just deciding you want a job.
Y
ou’re nearing graduation and you either have many potential career paths in mind or none at all. You may have no concrete ideas about your career yet, but you perhaps have an idea of what you want or don’t want from internship experience, and have only just begun looking around. Or maybe you already have a career in mind – you know what you want to do but don’t have a clue on how to get there. Perhaps you want to spend a year working in a different field before moving on to your chosen career path. Alternatively, you may be considering further studies, have been offered a position upon graduation, or have other plans. It’s not unusual to be slightly confused when the topic of your career comes up. But we hope to address it here and help you plan your career.
Get an idea Inklings of fear or intimidation when the talk of your future career comes up is not uncommon, and no one is going to judge you if you have not developed an idea of what career you want, or even when you are not ready to start thinking about it yet. You’re simply at the stage where you’re still deciding what career is the best for you as an individual. Remember that there is no one way to determine which path you should follow. Take the time to challenge yourself, get to know yourself better and develop your self-awareness. Audit your skills and continue developing them through internships or extracurricular activities, and, after that, assess them and find out what careers suit your skillset the best and which employers keep a look out for the skills you have honed. From there, make a decision and begin planning your career.

LET'S GET YOU HIRED! DECIDING YOUR CAREER CHOICE
Plan If you have a career in mind but are not sure how to get there, you have already begun planning for your future career. You may want to consider visiting your campus career consultant to talk over your ideas and flesh out a customised plan to keep you on track, or attending specific career programmes that offers training for a sector. Alternatively, if you already have a career in mind but want to spend some time gaining work experience, relevant or not, first, you may wish to turn your attention to building your network instead as you gain more experience. But planning does not only encompass a career path – if you are planning to apply for further studies, don’t be afraid to reach out for help to ensure you have settled on the best path, and make sure you have a plan as well.
Jump into action At this stage, you may either be ready to apply for graduate studies or professional opportunities. Look out for opportunities in graduate schemes or vacancies in the market, and don’t be shy to ask if you need support in drawing up your résumé or writing a cover letter. The market is competitive, and if you have been applying without success, it is vital that you don’t allow yourself to be disheartened. Your campus career counsellors would be able to help you master the key skills you would need to impress employers, and there may even be times when your résumé or cover letter just needs to be refreshed, tweaked or updated. There is a job waiting out there for you – you just have to find it. But if you have achieved a graduate job or a chance to further your studies on the postgraduate level, or decided to set up your own business, congratulations are in order! Start looking out for your future career progression instead, and keep self-promoting on the relevant social media sites, such as LinkedIn.

PASSION VS PRACTICALITY: THE DO'S AND DON'TS
“Follow your dreams!” “In this economy?”
T
orn between doing the right thing and doing right by you? Even if you feel your current career path is the best decision you’ve made, it is normal to have doubts from time to time. The key is to toe the line between choosing your passion and making practical decisions. Nor Atikah Abdul Wahid outlines the do’s and don’ts in doing just that.

How To Get Hired 2020
DO your research Researching about your chosen career path isn’t just about which job title sounds nice on a business card. There are many aspects to consider, such as the level of education and experience required for the position, salary expectations and job viability in today’s economy. If this sounds overwhelming, seek out advice from lecturers, career counsellors and even, senior students. They can respond to your concerns with their own perspectives and experience, enabling you to imagine your prospective future better. Don’t just hit the books – hit up the people with the know-how, too!
DON’T become attached to future plans If you’ve done your homework above, great! But planning for the future must also include being prepared for the unexpected, such as an entirely different career interest. There are many famous celebrities today with a wildly different career history. Who would be the face of such iconic Hollywood movie characters like Indiana Jones and Hans Solo if Harrison Ford remained as a carpenter? The same goes for acclaimed fashion designer Giorgio Armani who attended medical school. While it’s great to plan for your future career, you should also allow yourself the possibility of finding your true calling later in life. Whether you heed the call, however, is an entirely different story.
LET'S GET YOU HIRED! DECIDING YOUR CAREER CHOICE
DO what excites you
DO explore different module pathways If opening up to different career paths sounds too extreme for you, consider exploring different module pathways within your department. Most higher education institutions encourage their students to explore various specialised subjects and sign up for classes from different departments before settling to a chosen career path. This not only gives you an overview of potential career choices but it also equips you with a diverse set of knowledge. For example, if you are a Psychology major, your range of potential career choices vary from a forensic scientist to a human resources executive. The choices you make while studying could easily change the direction of your career without having you to commit drastic changes.
DON’T limit yourself People love to give themselves labels: extrovert, artistic, melancholic and the list goes on. While these labels can be useful for self-discovery, it would be a mistake to limit yourself based on preconceived notions of who you think you are at the moment. Do you feel pressured to choose a solitary job in a lab simply because you’re an introvert? Or are you aiming for an Arts-related career simply because you’re an imaginative person? Basing your career on a prominent trait or strength ignores the fact that people can change and that every job requires various skills and traits. Sure, your detail-oriented personality may bode well for your medical studies but being an excellent doctor also requires great social skills in treating every patient. Instead of using your personality as a crutch or limit, evaluate your other abilities and traits to enhance them further.
Perhaps “excite” is a strong word but if you’re already dreading going to your classes now, imagine having a decadeslong career based on those very same topics. If you don’t have any career or field that excites you, choose one that at least piques your curiosity. As time goes by, your priorities may change – you may swap a highpaying position for a fulfilling low-paying one and vice versa. However, a career that keeps you interested is the one that will demand you to change and improve to retain that career. Instead of seeing only obstacles, you welcome the challenges that come with the job and this will ensure longevity in career satisfaction.
DON’T ignore the warning signs There is a difference between following your passion and freefalling into one. Even if you are committed to a career path, you need to acknowledge the potential negative aspects of the job, such as low salary, gruelling working hours, competitive job market and so on. While this exercise may damper the fire in you, it is vital to know what to expect in the long run. If you find these negative aspects worth the hassle of having your dreams come true, then carry on! But if you balk at the thought of being indefinitely unemployed or working in a high-tension environment, it’s time to go back to the drawing board.

LET'S GET YOU HIRED! DECIDING YOUR CAREER CHOICE
Practicing Self-reflection in Your Career Journey Whether you’re a newly minted first-year undergrad or a fresh grad looking for their first job, there’s always time to pause and evaluate your life choices in your career journey. Take a breather with us.
S
elf-reflection is not only vital in your career planning but also, for envisioning the future you want, realigning your priorities and even overcoming setbacks. If you find that self-reflection is an alien concept to you or just plain tedious, gradmalaysia has prepared a simple list of questions to get you going.
Have you experienced any eye-opening moments lately? Whether positive or negative, any moment could be a powerful learning experience. If you have finished a semester or even, an entire undergraduate degree, contemplate on the moments that gave you a lasting impact. You don’t necessarily have to experience a monumental milestone – even surviving a particularly trying week could be enough for contemplation.
What were the most interesting challenges What is currently happening? and what made them so? This question may seem too simplistic or too broad. But this question is supposed to spark the act of mindfulness – the act of paying attention to everything that is happening to you and around you. Are you sitting comfortably? Can you hear noises in your surroundings? While mindfulness tends to be described as a form of meditation, you can practice mindfulness even for a brief period. This question prepares your mind to pay attention and relax so you can have a calm objective session of self-reflection.

How To Get Hired 2020
The scenarios you deem as challenges can be revealing – you might ace participating in group discussions but struggle to write the written assignments. Certain obstacles could point out the areas in your life that need improvement. On the other hand, the way you choose to overcome every obstacle also shows your personality and personal beliefs. Do you face problems head-on without any hesitation or do you take a step back to strategise for a better outcome? You also need to contemplate whether you have made the right choice in those moments.
LET'S GET YOU HIRED! DECIDING YOUR CAREER CHOICE
How is your relationship with the people in your life? Self-reflection doesn’t always need to centre on just yourself – the way you treat others is equally important. Have you assisted a fellow coursemate or teammate until the problem has been resolved? Did you provide solutions or did you hinder others? Your relationship with others does not only reflect your ability to communicate but also your openness to learn and tolerate alternative perspectives. Your current communication style could also indicate your preference for certain types of careers. For example, if you prefer a casual and open relationship with your teammates, you may prefer to work in a company with a flat hierarchy in the future.
Where should you channel your efforts next?
What is your biggest improvement or progress so far? It’s easy to get fixated on the mistakes and problems, especially if you feel that you’re lacking in major accomplishments. Hence, it is also important to take note of the positive developments in your life as it encourages you to stick to good habits and keep improving. Have you improved your public speaking skills lately, based on your last class presentation? Did you manage to bump up your CGPA last semester, even by a little? While you may not see direct results, it is these small changes that would accumulate into achievements later.
After a session of contemplating the past, it’s time to focus on the future. If you’ve met all your current goals or deadlines – congratulations! But now is the time to plan on how to improve further or, perhaps, shift your focus onto another area of your life. For example, if your CGPA has immensely improved since the past semester, you might want to consider focusing on extra-curricular activities next. Nowadays, it takes more than just great academic results to land a job!
After all is said and done, self-reflection should bring you more clarity in what you set out to achieve. While it may seem nerve-wracking to ruminate on your life, you will feel much more confident with your past choices and also, future plans after a moment of self-reflection.

A plethora of clubs and societies are at your fingertips, so why not take advantage of this opportunity? Shiffa Aziz stresses on the benefits of joining a club while in university.

eing involved in extra-curricular activities will definitely give you an edge over others when applying for internships or jobs. You should know that relying solely on your academic achievements is a big no-no as was the case when you were in secondary school. The only difference is the number of clubs have increased tenfold since school, including the existence of new activities you never knew you wanted to partake in. Putting aside the excitement, here are a few things to keep in mind as you experience a whole new world.
Power is power Always remember to keep in touch even after leaving the club. While it may be impossible to keep in contact with everyone, take extra care of those contacts you have built good relationships with.

How To Get Hired 2020
All organisations have an established corporate structure. There are the top positions – such as the president, vice president, secretary, or the bureau leaders (varies depending on the type of club) – where a single person would be elected to be in charge of managing their team. Offer yourself to take up a role within the organisation. Being a regular member of a club is one thing but holding an important role in one is another. HOWEVER, with great power comes great responsibility! If you feel you aren’t up to the task of taking on a role of responsibility, don’t. You know yourself better than anyone. But do not let the lack of experience prevent you from giving it a go. Sure, you might hit a bump in the road here and there but it is a learning curve after all. Learn from your failures and take in the experience.
LET'S GET YOU HIRED! PLANNING YOUR JOB SKILLS
It’s never too early to network Who better to start networking with than your teammates? Like it or not, you will be acquainted with these people as you will be working alongside them and can observe their work ethics. So, how do you get better acquainted with them? Always remember to keep in touch even after leaving the club. While it may be impossible to keep in contact with everyone, take extra care of those contacts you have built good relationships with. Clubs offer many ways for you to take part in activities and events where you will be exposed to people from different organisations and institutions. You might even get the chance to meet up with potential employers! They may not seem useful to you at the moment but, trust me, when you’re looking for internship placements or a good recommendation, these contacts will become invaluable to you in the future.
Particular set of skills
Get moving! While it is perfectly fine to be a regular club member, that doesn’t mean you should be a dormant one. Whenever you have the chance, take part in festivities! Your club is joining a competition? Sign up as a participant. Organising an annual dinner? Help out as the event crew. There’s a weekly club activity? Be there. You’ll find this tip easier to follow if you are passionate about the club, especially when the activities are catered towards your interests. You may think it is a hassle but imagine if you had actually unlocked an achievement, eg winning a team competition. That achievement speaks volumes of your character as you have not only done it for yourself but also for your team. By building a sense of camaraderie among you and your fellow members, you will learn the meaning of teamwork – a useful trait not only in the workplace but in life as well.
Whether you’re leading a team, participating in club activities or networking with members, you are inadvertently gaining and sharpening skills that will prove useful in the working world. These include leadership skills, communication skills and teamwork skills, so be sure to absorb those experiences as much as possible! However, you shouldn’t just leave it at that as one of the most important skills you will learn (and master) is the art of multitasking. Ensure that you are able to balance both your studies and your extracurricular activities. It is best to excel at both as this will make you a well-rounded student.

WE WANT
YOU TO VOLUNTEER! Are you ready to volunteer as tribute to the numerous causes available in Malaysia? gradmalaysia encourages you to take that step and reap the benefits.
H
ere’s the deal: if you’ve never volunteered before, now is the perfect time to do so. It doesn’t matter who you are: a college student, a fresh graduate or a working professional – you have the means to put yourself out there and be a good Samaritan by volunteering! However, it’s not just the satisfaction of helping others that you’ll gain. There’s more and we’re here to bring it to light.
You are giving recruiters the impression that you are not just any candidate who stays in their comfort zone.

How To Get Hired 2020
Expanding your connections Chances are you’ll be working in teams for a volunteering activity, which means you will be paired up with complete strangers. But don’t remain strangers after all is said and done! This is your chance to connect with your community AND broaden your network. It shouldn’t be too hard to strike up a conversation with them. After all, you are working together to achieve a shared goal. Whether it be by partaking in a soup kitchen organised by PERTIWI or helping out at PAWS Malaysia, you’ll definitely have things in common to talk about. After connecting with your peers, shift your focus to the organisers of those activities. Receiving their contacts will be invaluable to you and your career, specifically for your résumé and CV.

HELP THE HOMELESS
Building invaluable experience
FREE FOOD
The range of activities volunteering entails is endless. You could be a part of an environmental movement to save the planet, a charity organisation to help the needy, or a human rights cause to raise awareness. If you feel that these experiences may not be related to the career you wish to pursue, keep in mind that these experiences offer you an insight into real-world situations, which can be a real eye-opener for graduates and even, working professionals. By showing interest in the world around you and actively making it a better place, you are giving recruiters the impression that you are not just any candidate who stays in their comfort zone. Ultimately, these experiences make you a cut above the rest.
Joining corporate social responsibility
Reinforcing current skills Volunteering regularly helps you stay on your toes and keep your skills in check. It’s one thing to gain useful skills but it’s another to apply those skills in the real world. By doing so, you will not lose your touch or get rusty as you have an avenue to keep practising those skills. The main skills you will constantly be sharpening are your social skills as volunteer work requires you to communicate, be it with your team members or with the target audience. Ensure that you are constantly putting the skills you’ve gained to practice as we all know it is easier to forget than to remember. Also, remember to keep track of these skills by constantly updating your résumé, so you don’t forget about them later.
Most companies nowadays are investing in corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives. It is their way of showing support to a good cause as well as garnering positive attention from the general public. This is where you, the friendly neighbourhood volunteer, may bring up your volunteering work to the recruiters during the interview process.
Here’s a tip: Try to align your volunteering activities with the company’s CSR initiatives. Or better yet, try to volunteer for the company’s programmes prior to the interview! You can bet that recruiters will want to hear your thoughts and discuss your experiences with them.

W
e all know how incredibly important having a particular set of skills are. Take a look at the requirements for any job and you will find that recruiters seek candidates with an impressive skill set. It may be “strong leadership skills”, “able to write and converse in Mandarin” or “up-to-date with current trends of the IT industry” – the list goes on. Ideally, the best time to start garnering these skills is while you are still in university as it ensures you have ample time in perfecting them. In this article, we take a look at the two types of skills necessary for advancing your career: hard skills and soft skills.
You need to be clear on what is important to focus on and how you go about meeting deadlines.
22 |
How To Get Hired 2020
Hard skills Hard skills are also known as technical skills. They are usually acquired through formal training, professional certifications or previous work experience. This means that these skills are teachable and can be measured. Language skills
Language skills are measured through levels of proficiency, usually labelled as beginner, intermediate and advanced. While us Malaysians are taught Malay and English in schools – which asserts our claim as bilinguals – many possess other language capabilities as well. Having a multilingual background is sure to get you more visibility within a pool of candidates. Check out the language classes offered by your university or if you are willing to spend on one-on-one coaching, as there are many available tutors out there. Remember, learning a new language takes commitment and effort, so set aside time to actively practise using that language. Also, don’t forget to take language proficiency tests to see where your fluency stands!
LET'S GET YOU HIRED! PLANNING YOUR JOB SKILLS
Soft skills Following hard skills are soft skills, which are also known as transferable skills. These skills are generally in-demand as transferable skills can be used across all careers, regardless of the industry you are in. You can bring these skills to different jobs because they involve essential people skills. Here are a few soft skills you should master: Leadership skills
It's about assigning and delegating tasks well, setting deadlines and leading by a good example. Getting actively involved with a group activity, such as with student societies, and taking responsibility for something is the best way to learn leadership skills in university. Or just go a step further by taking on a coaching or mentoring role as it can also develop the relationship-building and performance-enhancing aspects of management and leadership. Communication skills
Job skills
These are work-specific skills which you MUST have to excel in your chosen career. It varies from field to field, eg IT skills (data analytics, software development, etc), graphic design skills (Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, etc), finance skills (accounting, financial reporting etc) and many more. These skills are usually obtained through a university diploma or degree, which itself is a certification of the hard skills you have learnt within your course. However, they also can be gained by attending courses, workshops and even through on-the-job training.
Pro Tip If you already have an idea about your career path, you can start planning the type of skills you need for it. For instance, if you aspire to join the automotive industry, scan through the job requirements of the job positions advertised in that field and find out what are the skills automotive engineers require.
This covers verbal and written communication, not to mention your listening skills. It's about being clear and concise as well as effectively tailoring your message for the audience while listening to the views of others. Practise your communication skills by seeking out opportunities that require interactions with others. For example, take up parttime jobs or volunteer for work that require communication such as customer service. Teamwork skills
Teamwork is about building positive working relationships that help everyone to achieve goals and business objectives. They can be developed in many different extracurricular activities. Joining the committee of a student society is a perfect way to gain experience in working as a team and managing others. Earn pocket money If you have time to spare, such as waiting for a new semester to start or after completing your university education, why not do a part-time job? You get to earn pocket money and use it for your travels or for your own spending. Not only that, you could use it for something that you need such as a laptop. The bottom line is that you have the freedom to spend your money on whatever you want. In the same vein, if your parents are struggling financially, your part-time job could be the remedy to lower their burdens. You could pay for half of the cost of your fees while your parents could come up with the other half. That way, they would not be overburdened with the total cost of your tuition fees. You could do a part-time job at a retail store or a fast food joint, depending on your choice. These places are always in need of frontline staff so this is where you could be a part of the team. You will not only earn an income but also, learn how to properly manage your finances as well.

Build your networking circle
Develop interpersonal skills Interpersonal skills are important in the workforce as you will have to handle many personalities such as demanding or impatient customers. Interpersonal skills are key in part-time jobs whether it is in retail, education or fast food restaurants where you would always need to face people and see to their requests. Moreover, through a side hustle, you will learn how to talk to people and be sensitive to the needs of others in the workplace. For example, when you speak to your manager or your clients, you will learn how to speak politely to get your point across. However, when you speak to your peers, you will have more freedom in interacting and voicing out your opinions about the work culture in general. When you learn how to speak to different people from different backgrounds, you will also learn the art of speaking to a variety of people. Consequently, you will also build up your confidence level and find presentations in university or at the workplace easier to tackle than before. This is because you would already have the experience of engaging in conversations with so many people from different walks of life.
If you think networking is only for when you have a fulltime job, think again! Networking can even happen when you are doing a part-time job. For example, if you meet a client who happens to work in your dream company, you should build a rapport with him or her so that you will know someone working in that company. Similarly, you can maintain the relationships you have with your former co-workers even when you’re already working full-time as their contacts might become useful later in their respective jobs. For instance, you might need their help to get information on a potential project for a company where they might be working at on a full-time basis. When you build your circle of network with different groups of people, you do not only learn about other job opportunities out there but make new friends in the process, too. Other than that, you get to mingle and share your similar interests too, such as your hobbies or any other interesting activities. Do not underestimate the power of networking as it is a useful tool in any industry you are in. In conclusion, a part-time job offers you the chance to better yourself through the many skills you will learn. Don’t miss the opportunity, especially if you have the time to spare to get a brief taste of the working world.

LET'S GET YOU HIRED! UTILISING YOUR INTERNSHIP EXPERIENCE
Choosing the Right Internship Programme for You It is that time of the year where you get to apply what you have learned in uni into an internship. There might be so many companies that you have in mind but, ultimately, you should choose an internship that will help you grow as an individual.
A
fter studying for two to three years, you are finally able to take a short break from your books and experience the working world – through an internship programme. Here are some of the factors you should take into consideration before embarking on your internship journey.
26 |
How To Get Hired 2020
Gain meaningful experience One of the important factors in selecting an internship is how it can help you get a job later once you complete your studies. Employers would want to know if you can incorporate your learning experience to the specific job role you applied for. Moreover, when you complete tasks during an internship, your superiors could entrust you with more responsibilities that enrich your experience further. Remember that an internship might not necessarily be something in your field, especially if you have other areas of interest. Therefore, it is a great trial-and-error ground for you to know whether it is something you would want to do when you start working later. For instance, if an internship programme you experienced is not your cup of tea, do not feel rejected. Know that you can apply to other internships even after completing your university education.
LET'S GET YOU HIRED! UTILISING YOUR INTERNSHIP EXPERIENCE
Select the right location
Research the company Look out for the company’s values and whether you will fit in. Ask yourself these questions: what do I want to get from the three months being in this company? Will I be able to achieve my learning goals in this company? You could also ask your seniors who underwent the same internship and get their feedback about their experience. That way, you will have an idea of how the programme is run, such as the working culture of the office, the superiors and their work attitude, and of course, whether there are training courses given to interns. Ultimately, you should get both the perspectives of your seniors and your own research about the company. That way, you will have an informed decision on the company.
Location is also an important factor in deciding an internship position for you. The city areas, such as Kuala Lumpur or Penang Island, are ideal places to find an internship because of the massive job market they have to offer. However, bear in mind that the cost of living would be higher there than in other parts of the country. In addition to that, as an intern, your salary would not be enough to cover your expenses, such as rental, food and other necessities. If you are wondering about solutions to tackle this problem, there are a few options. One of them is by asking your parents for a soft loan so that you have more than enough to cover your expenses. Alternatively, you could also use your own savings to finance these payments. On another note, minimising your spending is a great way for you to live within your own means. For example, you could opt for public transport if it is accessible to you. Another way to save money is to always keep a budget for your daily expenses. Getting an internship position is definitely going to be an exciting period in your life. However, in order for that to happen, you will need to do your homework in choosing the right one. Look into these factors wisely before choosing your internship programme!

Y
ou will definitely feel excited and nervous before starting your internship. There might be a lot of questions running through your mind: will I be able to perform my best as an intern? Will I be able to fulfil my own learning goals during the internship? If you have already made up your mind on the company, here are some useful tips to create a good impression of yourself as an intern.
Seeking feedback on the work you have completed is a way to know what to improve on and what can be better presented.

Show your commitment Commitment is an important ingredient in being an excellent intern. It shows how serious you are about the role. Show your bosses that you are interested in the tasks and projects assigned to you by doing them well and on time. By keeping up with your excellent work and deadlines, your bosses would be impressed and might even turn your internship into a full-time job. This would definitely require you to prove to your bosses that you have a track record of excellent work since the day you started. Seeking feedback on the work you have completed is a way to know what to improve on and what can be better presented. For instance, as a visual designer intern, you might get feedback to further improve on the colours and layout of a product so it is more visually appealing to clients. That way, you get to tap on areas that need improvement to produce quality work Sometimes, commitment may also include working overtime, especially when preparing for an event or meeting deadlines. At times, you may also be required to work during weekends, too. But remember, your plans can be adjusted if you plan well and work efficiently.
LET'S GET YOU HIRED! UTILISING YOUR INTERNSHIP EXPERIENCE
Do challenging tasks Doing a difficult task will definitely force you out of your comfort zone but it is worth the shot as you get to tap on your other talents as well. Usually, doing something difficult will require more time, effort and research. The price for the risk you take is the experience of learning something entirely new and enriching your skills. Sometimes, your superiors will ask you to take on a challenging task, especially if they believe that you can execute it. A demanding task might seem overwhelming at first but, with proper guidance from your superiors, you should be able to complete it. Remember that you should seek help from colleagues, and even your superiors, if you need help with harnessing substantial ideas or reducing the workload.
Ask questions when in doubt An important trait to have as an intern is to always ask questions when you are unsure of anything, such as the systems in the office or vague instructions on tasks. You could start by asking your co-workers in your department as they will be more than willing to help you familiarise yourself with systems at work. This is important so that you are not stuck and will be able to progress with your own work. Do not let fear grip you from reaching out. The bottom line is to always seek clarifications if you need help with a task. An outstanding intern is definitely one who sees their learning growth progress since their first day of internship. Do not lose the opportunity to be a star intern as your bosses might even offer you a full-time position at the end of your internship. Be a willing intern who takes initiatives and thirsts for knowledge and experiences throughout the internship.

Boost Your Internship Experience For the next two to three months, you will be undergoing your internship and get a sneak peek of the working world. Nashrah Ghazali brings to light the different ways to make it worthwhile.
Seek career mentors Although mentorship is not practised widely in our country, it is extremely beneficial, especially during your internship. Basically, mentors are those who can give you career-related advice, help you make connections as well as write recommendations for you. Recommendations are words of acknowledgement of your abilities for your future employers’ reference. But how do I find a mentor, you ask? During your internship, you will be working with a lot of people from different departments. If you have a colleague who is helpful in answering work-related questions, works with you regularly and cares for both your personal and professional development, start having conversations regarding mentorship with them. If you’re in luck, sometimes your supervisor would even offer themselves to be your mentor.

From the simplest to the most complicated, it can be a very long list of responsibilities. It’s important for you to keep track of everything you’ve done and the knowledge you have obtained during your internship as they all add up to your overall experience. There are many different ways to do this: a) you can keep a journal if handwriting is your thing or b) you can keep a draft email and type out every new knowledge or task that you have done along with their dates. All this information will support your achievements and add weight to your résumé later. Believe me, it will make your résumé look impressive in the future.

research the company and industry If your career journey is like going through a university course, then internships would be the introductory chapter in gaining industry knowledge. For instance, if you are an editorial intern of a publishing company, you will learn more about the publishing industry. Aim to learn about the company as a whole. Try to seek out colleagues from other departments (eg marketing or sales) and learn how they contribute to the company.
While doing your internship, start thinking ahead – is this the type of company and department that you would want to work in the future? You may discover during your internship that you prefer to work in a different company or industry. However, don't view the internship as a waste of time, as it’s a blessing to find out your preferred career early. This short list of things to do will make a difference in your internship experience. Remember that you’re not doing this internship just for the sake of graduating from university but to shape yourself as an ideal candidate for your future career.

LET'S GET YOU HIRED! UTILISING YOUR INTERNSHIP EXPERIENCE
Why an Internship is Vital for Your Career Going through an internship experience is important as it lets you get a feel of the working world. Anne Grace Savitha reveals five reasons why an internship is important for you!
Gain new skills Internships are the best place for you to gain valuable skills that you can use in the workforce. You can apply what you have learned into a specific role and also, gain practical skills that are equally essential. For instance, if you are assigned the role of a business development intern, you will learn multiple skills together along with the job such as researching on the types of markets and using your persuasive skills to get your clients to buy a certain product. Additionally, you will also learn soft skills when you team up with your colleagues for projects and speak to your bosses at work. These skills are important to foster a way of communicating effectively with your peers at work and to better prepare you for the workforce. Also, it gives you a sense of how to handle different personalities when you start your first job.

Make fruitful connections An internship is one of the ways you can make meaningful relationships with the people in the industry. A colleague at work can become a close friend over time through collaborative projects, or even lunch dates. By the same token, you get to forge friendships with other interns in the office and maintain that relationship even after you have completed your internship. These connections are beneficial to you as your peers could recommend job positions for you when you are looking for a job later. Similarly, you can also approach them if you face any problems at work and need a listening ear to help you pull through the day.
LET'S GET YOU HIRED! UTILISING YOUR INTERNSHIP EXPERIENCE
As an intern, there will be many things you will find intimidating, such as speaking with your superiors and doing a task that is entirely new to you. However, the key to breaking away from this feeling is to practise.
Understand yourself better When you undergo an internship, you would be able to understand yourself better. For instance, if you are assigned a social media intern role, you could find out whether it is the kind of job you want to take on as a full-time role. Alternatively, if it is a role that does not suit you, you could explore other areas in the same field such as a digital marketing role. Through internships, you get to discover yourself through the roles you take on and whether they resonate with your passion and interests.
Build your confidence Let’s be honest, as an intern, there will be many things you will find intimidating, such as speaking with your superiors and doing a task that is entirely new to you. However, the key to breaking away from this feeling is to practise. When you continuously do a task, you will get the hang of it. Similarly, when you break the ice with your superiors by steadily communicating with them, you will know their working styles and how to approach them for a discussion or meeting. These are some of the ways you can build your confidence in the workplace and adjust yourself to the working culture.
Strengthen your résumé There is always the need to impress recruiters and employers about your qualifications and work experience. An internship is an experience that you can add to your résumé as it provides information on what you have learned throughout your internship. If you are called for a job interview, you can tell the recruiter the assignments and projects you have executed during your stint as an intern. That way, they will know your experiences and whether you can use your learning takeaways into the job.
In conclusion, an internship is an important period where you get the opportunity to learn as much as possible within a short period of time if you put in the effort and make it a good learning ground for you!

How To Get Hired 2020
#2
Use the same general format for Work Experience, Education and Extracurricular & Volunteer Activities sections. It makes your résumé more visually consistent and helps recruiters pick out the relevant details.
LET'S GET YOU HIRED! WRITING YOUR JOB APPLICATION
Evaluate The Writing 1. Choosing the right keywords What is it?
Keywords let the recruiter know – at one glance – which job you are actually applying for and that you have the right skills and/or work experience for it.
How-to
In three simple steps, this is what you can do to identify the right keywords for your résumé: 1) Print out the job ad you’re applying to 2) Highlight or underline the keywords or key phrases you come across in the job ad (eg "collaborate", "multi-platform marketing strategy", "content creation", "increased subscribers") 3) Use the relevant keywords or key phrases in your résumé and cover letter.
2. Tailoring your résumé What is it?
Every job application you send out should highlight the skills and experience that’s relevant to the position you’re applying for. It’s no good using the same résumé or cover letter for all the jobs you’re applying for.
How-to
Answer these questions to learn the art of crafting your résumé to the job and company you are applying for: • What are the most important requirements? Most jobs require candidates to meet several different criteria or roles. Find out which requirements or roles are most important for the job you’re applying for. • How do I meet the job requirements? Start linking your career objective and the bullet points underneath each previous job in your work experience section to the job you are applying for. You want to make these as relevant as possible to the job!
3. Quantify your achievements What is it?
Quantification is using numbers, percentages and statistics to quantify your accomplishments, which paints a clearer picture in indicating the success rate of your achievements. This will have a bigger impact on recruiters, as opposed to using vague statements.
How-to
• Insert all the details of the project as well as stating the exact numbers involved to show a solid and concrete achievement. Bad example: Helped create a phone application for the company Good example: Assisted in the development of the myHealth mobile app for Hospital Ting which has 50,000 downloads as of 1st January 2019
How To Get Hired 2020 | 39
LET'S GET YOU HIRED! WRITING YOUR JOB APPLICATION
4. Using relevant action verbs What is it?
Action verbs describe your accomplishments and activities to liven up your résumé (eg "organised", "participated", "completed", "developed", "produced"). When you use action verbs, you are telling the recruiter how YOU performed the action, as opposed to how the action was performed by you.
How-to
Here’s a sure-fire way in constructing your achievements and responsibilities by using action verbs: 1) Select the project you wish to include in your résumé. Make sure it fits the job description. 2) Choose an action verb which describes your role in that project. 3) List down the result of the project. This is where you can use exact figures or numbers to quantify your accomplishment. 4) Write it out in a complete sentence according to the formula:
Action Verb Organised
+
Project the annual blood donation drive on 5th March
+
Result which resulted in 45 students donating blood for accident victims
=
Accomplishment Organised the annual blood donation drive on 5th March which resulted in 45 students donating blood for accident victims
5. Avoid typos! What is it?
Typos are like landmines in your résumé: they are hard to spot and just one will do plenty of damage. Always double-check your documents, or get someone else to help proofread your résumé before it goes out to recruiters.
How-to
Those wiggly red, blue or green lines that sometimes appear underneath the text in Microsoft Word are there for a reason! Here’s how to spot those mistakes: Red lines: these appear when there is a potential spelling mistake. Which is why they only show up underneath single words, and not entire sentences. Blue lines: formatting errors or inconsistencies, such as extra spaces between words. Green lines: these appear when there is a potential grammatical error in your sentences.
Please note that sometimes these lines can be false alarms! Print out your résumé and check the hard copy just to be sure. Also, always save your résumé as a PDF file so that all formatting remains intact.

I’m writing to apply for the position of Social Media Writer for the Breakfast Club website and magazine, as advertised on your Instagram account on 28 April 2019. Although I have limited experience as a social media account manager during my days as Secretary for the Wogharts School of Arts Student Council, I believe that my work experience as Part-Time Promoter for Famous Bookstore prepares me for the aforementioned role. In your job posting, you stated that you require a Social Media Writer who understands both digital and print publications. During my time as Secretary for the Wogharts School of Arts Student Council, I was in charge of handling the Student Council’s Facebook, Instagram and Twitter accounts, which had a combined follower base of 1,890 users. In my part-time role for Famous Bookstore, I worked on many different promotions for print publications, which included several best-selling books and graphic novels including the Captain Varmel graphic novel promo which coincided with the launch of the movie. When I saw the job posting on your Instagram account, I knew that I could offer my skills and experience to your company. My drive to continuously improve both my digital and traditional marketing skills makes me a strong candidate for this position.

LET'S GET YOU HIRED! ACING YOUR INTERVIEW
Inside Your Interviewer’s Head Interviews are stressful and intimidating. We get that! The trick to keeping calm is to know the questions running through your interviewer’s head and answering them before they even think about it.
Is the candidate really Does the candidate interested in this job? have the basic skills to get the job done? The last thing recruiters want is to hire someone who isn’t really interested in the job and may leave in a few months after starting. They also do not want to employ someone who will be unhappy in their role and can add little to the organisation.
How to reassure the interviewer:
Show your interviewers that you have a realistic grasp of what the job entails by: • asking about your day-today responsibilities and their expectations of you as an employee • clarifying the interviewer’s response to your questions • rehashing what was said by the interviewer to show that you understand what is expected of you. Take note, though, that doing these just for the sake of it won't work – you must be genuinely enthusiastic about this job offer. Make it clear from your reactions that you are serious about your career and hope to stick to your job for some time, at least.

How To Get Hired 2020
It costs time and money to market a job opening and assess applicants, and even more to train a fresh graduate. Hence, graduates who showcase a ready and extensive set of skills are usually more appealing to managers and recruiters. Moreover, a candidate with experience and skills are more likely to work independently.
How to reassure the interviewer:
Firstly, demonstrate that you have the specific skills required for the role. Secondly, discuss good transferable skills (communication, commercial awareness, leadership skills, etc) and basic knowledge gained from previous experiences or vocational exposure. Interviewers don’t expect you to have expert knowledge of your job scope or position, but they do want to see if you have the willingness to learn while on the job.
Can the candidate bring anything new to my organisation? When hiring, recruiters must consider the skills, interests and knowledge that their current employees possess, and then decide if you can "add value" to the company.
How to reassure the interviewer: Show that you have the skills and qualities that the interviewer is looking for. Find appropriate opportunities to bring it up during the interview, such as when your interviewers offer you a chance to share additional information.
LET'S GET YOU HIRED! ACING YOUR INTERVIEW
How well will this candidate get along with colleagues and clients? No recruiter wants to hire an individual who cannot sustain a working relationship with their colleagues or clients. Rude, cynical, difficult or arrogant interviewees will be weeded out.
How to reassure the interviewer:
Stay polite and positive. But most importantly, listen. Take an interest in the other roles and people in the organisation. Ask questions about your potential colleagues or how your applied role may influence theirs. If your position is a client-oriented one, it may also be a good idea to ask about the kind of services or support you will be expected to provide. This shows initiative and dedication on your part to maintain the company's relationship with its clients.
Does the candidate have other interviews or job offers lined up? Recruiters are always running a talent race with each other – they're constantly competing for the best talent. They will want to know if you're being courted by any other organisation as well so they can timetable their final decision (if they like you) and extend you an offer before someone else does.
How to reassure the interviewer:
There's no point in lying or pretending you don't (or do) have other opportunities lined up. Don't be shy about talking about other job applications if asked. If they're similar to the one you're interviewing for, it shows that you are really serious about working in that field and that you have put a lot of thought into your job search. However, if you've already accepted a job offer, don't keep shopping around for more prospects! This is highly unethical and may cause recruiters to write you off on the spot if they suspect you of this!
How do I feel about this candidate? ARE THEY lying or behaving strangely? Experienced recruiters often use their instincts and can tell if something doesn't feel quite "right" during an interview.
How to reassure the interviewer:
Be honest. Admit if you don't know the answer to a question instead of trying to lie your way through. Being honest about your shortcomings is better than having recruiters discover that you lied during the interview – even if it's only a small bluff. Also, if you happen to have any mitigating circumstances on the day itself or have suddenly fallen ill, it's wise to flag this up to the interviewer right at the start. That way, the interviewer will understand and make allowances if you look uncomfortable, upset or less enthusiastic than expected.

Types of Interviews
Quick tips to help you prepare for different types of job interviews.
One-on-one Interviews
Video Interviews
Most job seekers are familiar with the one-on-one interview session. Personal or face-to-face interviews are pretty straightforward as your interviewer asks you a series of questions to evaluate whether or not you’re suited for the job. Some companies prefer using several rounds of oneon-one interviews with different department heads before deciding the candidate’s fate with the company.
Conducted to filter suitable candidates at an early stage, video interviews are a new trend in the graduate recruitment process. However, due to the potential technical pitfalls and how different they may be depending on the platform used by each employer, they tend to intimidate graduate job seekers. Video interviews may take place “live” (eg through Skype) or pre-recorded (eg video submissions).
Interview tips
• Show your interviewer that you are interested in the job by asking relevant questions. Some simple ones include asking about the role’s day-to-day tasks, the work culture or the role’s career path. • You should also talk about how the job role matches your aspirations, career plans and relevant interests. Enthusiasm is key. • Demonstrate specific examples of the skills required for the role you’re applying for and discuss relevant transferable skills you obtained from any school/work experiences. • Also note that body language is just as important as verbal communication. Maintain a decent level of eye contact throughout the interview, sit upright to exude confidence and remember to smile!

Interview tips
• Practice makes perfect. Start by getting used to appearing on-screen. Switch on your computer’s webcam and record yourself as though you’re running through a practice interview. • Set the scene by dressing smartly and make the area where you’ll be carrying out the interview look like a professional workplace. • If you are using a Wi-Fi connection, make sure you have a good signal strength so that the video conference doesn’t end unexpectedly. • If you’re taking the call on a laptop, remember to plug it in to a power source F O R – you may be online for longer than you think.

LET'S GET YOU HIRED! ACING YOUR INTERVIEW
Panel Interviews
Phone Interviews
Panel interviews will typically involve anywhere from three to eight interviewers (usually three for graduate interviews). They will likely consist of a mix of HR personnel, business managers and some departmental specialists. Panel interviews tend to be more rigorous and meticulous than individual interviews as you will be juggling questions from multiple sources. This may sound intimidating but fret not, the interviewers are out to find out the same thing as at any other interview: whether you’re a good fit for the company!
A phone interview is often a screening exercise where employers check some basic information prior to a faceto-face interview. It is also used to filter through suitable candidates early in the recruitment process. The relative anonymity of a phone interview may allow you to speak to your interviewer without the stress of travelling to an unfamiliar place in professional attire, but that doesn’t mean that you should let your guard down!
Interview tips
• Maintain direct eye contact with the interviewer asking you a question. Don’t look away! • Address the interviewer by name when speaking to them. One little trick is to get their name cards at the beginning of the session and then arrange them in front of you according to the interviewers’ sitting arrangement. • Don’t panic if one of the interviewers looks bored. Each member on the panel will have different interests, so it’s likely that not everyone may be interested in your response to a question asked. • You will sometimes be asked the same question twice by mistake. Don’t second-guess yourself and always keep to the same version of your story.
Interview tips
• Much of the impact you make will come through your voice, so it’s important that you sound attentive and enthusiastic. • Take note of the keywords in the questions asked; you can refer to them when responding to your interviewer. • Don’t be distracted by your surroundings or lose track of what you want to say next. Avoid “umms” and “uh-huhs” or constant requests to repeat the questions. • Have your CV or completed application next to you in case you need to refer to them during the phone interview. • Choose a conducive, quiet environment for the phone appointment to prevent background noise from ruining your session.

LET'S GET YOU HIRED! ACING YOUR INTERVIEW
Interview Mistakes You Should Avoid at All Costs You’ve probably heard these tips a gazillion times now but let us refresh your memory, just in case. Benny Razali elaborates.
T
48 |
here’s no harm in reminding you of the same tips over and over again as long as they are relevant, useful and will still help you to get hired. So here are the interview mistakes that you should avoid at all costs:
Putting on whatever outfit you have
Thinking that time revolves around you
Please put some effort into dressing up appropriately. Everybody knows that short hemlines, flip flops, collarless shirts and low necklines are NOT acceptable, but don’t forget that wrong colours can also be grossly inappropriate for a job interview.
Even if you are not an early riser, please try and be early for the interview. Try to be at the venue 5-10 minutes earlier as this will give you time to calm down and prepare your documents beforehand. But don’t be too early as this can irritate the interviewers.
How To Get Hired 2020
Thinking that last-minute Google search solves everything Please do your research on the company/organisation right after you got the call for an interview. The company wasn’t built in a day, so you need more than a day to collect important information regarding the company.
LET'S GET YOU HIRED! ACING YOUR INTERVIEW
Thinking that last-minute Thinking that the LinkedIn search solves interviewers need to everything know you inside out While we’re on the topic, please don’t forget to look up your interviewers’ profiles as well. Make sure to ask the HR personnel that called you about who your interviewers might be and then find them on LinkedIn or across the internet. Know what their positions are so you can prepare relevant questions for the session (head over to our "So, You’ve Got Questions?" article for reference).
Thinking that badmouthing previous employers makes you favourable Newsflash: It doesn’t.
While your childhood experience might be fun and memorable enough as an autobiography, it’s not relevant to the interviewers. Keep your introduction short yet compact (your hometown, your alma mater, your major, etc) and then move on to what they’ve been waiting to hear: your experiences.
Using your phone/not setting phone on silent during interview If you can turn off or put your phone on silent mode for the whole day during a date, you can afford to do so for a couple hours during your interview session. Most people tend to overlook this nugget of common sense. It is rude and it shows that you can’t seem to be serious with the task at hand.
Lying about your experience/achievements You could mention your non-existent Mount Everest climbing expedition or the imaginary business dinner with Jack Ma about your new e-commerce idea. But remember: recruiters are resourceful people. Your claims are traceable to their origin. Honesty is always the best policy and it also helps to keep your dignity intact.
Being rude to the people other than interviewers – before and after the session This might sound irrelevant at first glance – after all, why would the way you treat the janitors and security guards you met at the front desk influence your possible future career? Well, employers are not just hiring employees with technical skills; they are hiring professionals who know how to carry themselves in society. Be polite and respectful towards everyone so that they have a good impression of you.
In a nutshell, the mistakes pointed out above are all avoidable if you put some common sense (and effort) to work. Ask yourself this whenever you feel you are about to commit either of them: if I am the interviewer, would I be pleased to see this kind of behaviour from a candidate?

So, You’ve Got Questions?
The most nerve-wracking moment during an interview is neither at the beginning nor at the in-betweens. It creeps in towards the end of the session, after all is said and done, and it usually sounds like this: “do you have any questions for us?”
I
t might sound like you were asked this question out of courtesy: this candidate has done well throughout the session so let’s at least hear what they want this time, right? WRONG. They have verified your general information, experience and skill set at the beginning of the interview, so this is the part where the employer confirms whether you are really interested in the position offered or just trying your luck. So here are some questions that you might want to ask your interviewers in the next time around:
Are there opportunities for professional development? If so, what do those look like? This question is as straightforward as it sounds, honestly. At the end of the day, you will always be looking for ways to improve yourself and go further in the career path of your choice as stagnation is a threat. Remember to look into opportunities for growth and find out if the company has a learning and development programme.

How To Get Hired 2020
Who’s the longest working employee here and where are they now? Following up to the previous question, the answer to this one can be a dealbreaker on whether you want to be a part of the company. It helps in letting you know whether the company appreciates their deserving employees and getting a foresight of how you will be treated once you’re on board.
PRO-TIP! It really helps to ask a few introductory questions before the interview takes place! Ask the HR personnel that called you in for the interview about the interviewing panel. Knowing their positions may help you in strategising your questions better.
Who was the person in this position and why is it vacant now? It is alright for you to know what fate befell the previous owner of the seat they are offering you. Just like how badmouthing previous employers shows your negative personality, this method also works the other way around. It gives you a clue about the overall professionalism in the office.

This question shows that you are highly invested in the position offered and committed to view it from the interviewer’s perspective. In the meantime, knowing their answers, you can prepare yourself to answer any concerns that they have regarding you and the position right there and then.
What’s your favourite Who will I be working part of working in this closely with? company? You are not going to be alone in Get a general sense of your interviewer’s opinions about working there. The best guide as to whether it’s going to be a good working place is with the enthusiasm shown in their answers. completing your tasks, so it makes sense for you to figure out the people you are going to collaborate with most of the time. Jotting down their names and positions can help you understand the relevancy of their titles to the tasks and evaluate the crossfunctionality of the roles.
You don’t have to limit yourself to just these questions – if you have any other things that concern you, just ask away. Make sure the questions are straightforward and easy to understand. Remember to show your confidence in what you have to offer and never undersell of oversell yourself while doing so. Good luck!

mid a global drop in oil and gas prices, this sector is facing a challenging period. Despite the downsides, however, there are many positives that make this sector both rewarding and challenging for fresh graduates. Malaysia has long been a contributor to global oil and gas production with around 40% of the country’s revenue dependent on oil and gas exports. Engineers in this field are usually assigned to either exploration and production (upstream) or refining and marketing (downstream). More importantly, the country is also making inroads into more sustainable forms of energy such as biofuels, biomass, solar energy and hydroelectric energy. With this comes fresh opportunities for graduates with relevant qualifications.

onsumer goods are any products bought to be used directly by consumers, rather than being bought by manufacturers to be used in the production of other goods. Fast moving consumer goods (FMCGs) are usually high volume, low-cost products that are sold quickly and in large quantities, such as toiletries, cosmetics, cleaning products, food and drink. The consumer goods industry is fast-paced and highly competitive; the pace means that changes and results can be seen quickly. Efficiency is key during the processes involved in producing consumer goods to meet demands and maximise returns. In this industry, graduates are likely to go far if they are creative and innovative, and can come up with practical new ideas that will put their employers ahead of the competition.

FUN FACT: According to experts, it’s a stable industry. Tim Morris of Coriolis Research stated, “There’s a saying in the industry that goes ‘everyone has to eat’. To this I would add ‘and wash their clothes and brush their teeth.’ Unlike other industries, FMCG does not suffer from mass layoffs every time the economy starts to dip. You may put off buying a car, but you don’t put off dinner. This lends FMCG a level of job security unknown in other industries.”

hile still considered one of the “smaller” sectors in Malaysia, it does offer many career choices for graduates. Within print media, roles such as writers, designers and photographers abound, while radio and television require producers, editors, hosts and production crew. With internet streaming services blurring the line between traditional and new media, full-time jobs such as vloggers or YouTubers are not uncommon. On the more conventional side of things, there are a host of graduate opportunities within advertising, PR and marketing. Working skills
In any job, compelling communication skills are key. While it is essential to strive for good academic results, being able to articulate your knowledge and thoughts clearly are equally important. The ability to communicate effectively will leave a positive first impression on the recruiters. Besides that, fresh graduates must also be resilient when facing challenges. For instance, the current digital era requires new recruits to be agile and learn new skills quickly.

Résumé mistakes
It is important to double-check your résumé to ensure there are no grammatical errors before sending them to recruiters as this could be an indication of your attention to detail. Moreover, graduates should also highlight the depth of their experiences instead of only their accomplishments. This will allow the recruiters to have a better understanding of the graduate’s skills and competencies, and subsequently match the graduate with a suitable role.
Internship importance
Candidates with internship experience will have a higher chance of getting hired. An internship would enable students to gain first-hand exposure to working in the real world and to apply the theoretical knowledge they have acquired during their studies. As a result, fresh graduates will be able to integrate themselves better at work.
Ideal interviewee
Besides being able to articulate their thoughts in a clear and concise manner, the candidates must also have an in-depth understanding of the types of business and the roles they have applied to. It would be a huge plus if a candidate is able to have a lively discussion with the interviewer on the current issues the company is facing and how they can contribute to the business moving forward. On top of that, the candidates should be genuine and honest about their strengths and weaknesses as this will allow the interviewer to better assess their suitability for the roles they have applied to.
Word of advice
At the start of your career, have an open and positive mindset. You will never know what your limit is until you have experienced it. Be brave and eager to take up any challenges that may come your way, and learn as much as you can!

Career choice
As someone who switched from medicine to business, I believe in the need to pursue what makes us happy. I am passionate about business as well as creating unique experiences for customers. This has led me to Astro – a company that has been entertaining Malaysians for the past 23 years. It has been an exciting journey and I am glad to have chosen this career path.
Into the company
I visited Astro’s booth at a career fair to understand more about its Management Associate programme and I was interviewed right away. After a second interview, I was offered a placement in Astro. The takeaway is that we need to take time to talk to the companies’ representatives at career fairs. It helped me to better understand the company, its employment programme for graduates and it even landed me an interview opportunity on the spot, too!
Daily hustle
The Management Associate programme allows me to undertake job rotations among key departments, each with its own unique working environment and job scopes. My experience in customer division helped me to better understand Astro’s products, such as On Demand and Astro GO. When I was with Go Shop, I managed the e-commerce website, drove marketing initiatives and even hosted several Facebook Live shows. Next, I found

Skill set
Effective communication can make or break a project. It’s important to be pleasant with everyone you meet. I’ve experienced meeting a random stranger in a café one morning and she turned out to be the person I had to work with closely for a new project! Other than that, I also find being able to adapt important as I can absorb and learn as fast as I can. In terms of hard skills, possessing some computer skills, such as advanced Microsoft Excel, will help a lot in this new era where data analysis is indispensable.

Then and now
There is not much difference for me except less flexibility in terms of time. On this, time management comes in handy. As a working adult, I have a lot more responsibilities and commitments compared to as a student. It’s no longer about getting good grades; it is now about building a career, owning a house and giving back to my parents. However, I know that I can always seek advice and learn from my co-workers and friends around me who share the same commitments.

Do's
• Treat your internship like it's a real job • Introduce yourself to everyone in your department on your first day at work • Know what your strengths and weaknesses are and work on them
Don'ts
• Be afraid to ask questions or ask for help when necessary • Spend your lunch time alone. Use this chance to network with your colleagues • Remain empty-handed if you have finished all your tasks. Do something!
There are numerous things I enjoyed: the skills I have gained as well as the relationships I have developed with co-workers and the other interns I spent time with. The practical experience I gained here has helped me bridge the gap between what I learnt in university and the actual work being done in the industry. It is really satisfying to be able to apply what I have learnt to my job. The culture and work atmosphere at Astro are great, too. People are approachable, friendly and supportive. They are always willing to help. I was also pleasantly surprised that the dress code is not as strict and employees could wear any outfit that they’re comfortable with to work.

I was able to practise what I have learnt – computer science. I developed my proficiency in various programming languages, such as PHP and JavaScript, and had the opportunity to see how the technology architecture department functioned. I have also learnt and developed my soft skills such as being more independent and not relying on others to find out what I was supposed to do, and working well with my colleagues to complete a project. Besides, I learnt a lot from my co-workers who have invaluable experience. I sought for their advice, observed how they talked to others and learnt office etiquette tips from them.
Life hacks
First, make friends with other interns. As they are around the same age as you, you will probably find them easier to talk to and they could be your best support during your time with the company. Catch up and share insights with each other. Communication is key. Ask questions if you do not understand. Remember to make a good impression. Arrive early or at least on time to the office. On your first day of work, dress professionally. It’s always better to overdress than underdress. You can observe what the dress code is later and adjust.

CAREER CORNER
DAGANGNET TECHNOLOGIES SDN BHD
DagangNet Technologies Sdn Bhd Name Ahmad Syahir Bin Abdul Ghariff, 25 Position Analyst Programmer (Java) Qualification Bachelor's Degree in Information Technology Been working here for 1 year and 4 months
Career choice
I have been fascinated with computers and technology ever since I was young. I was amazed by the sophistication of computers and gadgets. That inspired me to pursue Information Technology at the tertiary level at the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM). My interest in the area increased as I worked on the development of iOS mobile apps using Swift for my final year project. During my leisure time, I learned technical skills through online courses in order to broaden my knowledge in this thriving industry.
Into the company
I was an intern at DagangNet Technologies Sdn Bhd for six months. During that period, I was tasked to improve the existing system of ePermit, which is a system to facilitate applications for trade permits. The internship programme benefited me because I was able to apply my theoretical and technical knowledge that I acquired from my university, especially in web application development to real-life situations in the industry. I was then offered a full-time job as an analyst programmer upon completion of the internship programme.
Daily hustle
I work in a team consisting of project managers, business analysts, system analysts and test analysts. I also work closely with network engineers, system engineers and the database
administrator team. As a programmer, my responsibility is to write system instructions, integrating with other systems, modifying source code and debugging. I’m also responsible for identifying and fixing defects, ensuring the system produces the expected results aligned with the business process.
Skill set
Soft skills: • Teamwork • Time management • Business communication • Problem solving Hard skills: • Java • HTML / CSS • JavaScript • Angular JS
Then and now
My years of learning at the university has taught me how to become creative and independent. Although I was constantly tied up with class schedules and assignment deadlines, I was still able to manage my time and find the balance between my studies and other sports and recreational activities. I learned to prioritise my work, capitalise on my strengths and adapt to my weaknesses. I also learned the importance of teamwork.
However, I realised that my experience was inadequate when I joined the internship programme. It was my first exposure to the application of my technical knowledge to the needs and practice of the industry. I may have the basic technical knowledge for the job but I realised that I also need soft skills, confidence and readiness to shoulder huge responsibilities that come with the job. I took the initiative to seek knowledge in areas that I was lacking in and had to make a few sacrifices, especially my hobbies, but in time, I learned to adapt to the situation. The internship period has indeed helped me to prepare for the working world. However, in light of the fast rate of change in technology, I believe one has no alternative but to strive for continuous lifelong learning.

Career choice
I believe that if I wanted to excel in a career, it has to be something that I am passionate about. I soon realised that I love making genuine connections with people. Working as a Human Resource Executive, specifically in talent acquisition, allows me to meet new people almost all the time. In addition, I love the exhilarating feeling of making people’s lives better by providing them with great opportunities within my organisation. Besides that, I did my homework and learned that every organisation needs HR and the opportunities in this career path are plentiful.
Into the company
I searched on the internet for a place to carry out my six-month long internship and I knew I wanted to do my internship within a public listed company (Bursalisted). I stumbled upon DNeX and applied through the careers section on their website. Then, the recruitment manager (who is now my manager) called me and proceeded to conduct a phone interview with generic but vital questions about my studies and the list of subjects I took in university. Thankfully, I got accepted. During the internship period, I’ve learned a great deal on how to manage expectations and complete all tasks. Subsequently, I was absorbed and hired as a full-time staff member.

As one of the organisation’s frontliners, I am responsible in screening all profiles as well as carrying out job matching between candidates and job requirements. Since I began my career at DNeX Berhad, I have handled more than 20 positions, mainly involving the IT and Energy sectors within the organisation, such as system analyst, Java developer, sales and project engineer. From time to time, I also assist in preparing, organising and participating in job fairs organised by universities. Job fairs are vital for us as they help to build positive brand awareness and develop connections with both students and universities.
Skill set
I believe soft and hard skills are not something that you can magically possess and master – they are something you need to build over time with patience and experience. I would say that the three most important skills to master for recruiters are communication, teamwork and adaptability. On the other hand, when it comes to hard skills, negotiation and screening skills are incredibly important. Negotiation skills especially are vital when you are faced with rejections; how you communicate and deal with such situations will create an image of your company. The first impression of the company from the talents' perspective typically lies on recruiters.
Then and now
It’s undeniable that adulting is tough on anyone and everyone. Being an adult requires an extensive amount of effort and, with so many responsibilities on your shoulders, you need to know how to navigate the challenges yourself. I adjusted my lifestyle by understanding that, while the theories I’ve learned in university helped frame my thought structure, I now need to implement those theories to practice at work. You should at least know how to steer yourself in an unfamiliar working environment. A huge part of adulting is knowing how to pick yourself up on bad days and how to clean up your own mistakes.

Nowadays in the employment market, fresh graduates need to compete with experienced job seekers. Hence, fresh graduates need to be at par or better than experienced job seekers. They need to be extra prepared in their knowledge about the company and skills as follows: • Research about the company background and learn about the business and culture of the company • Good behaviour and human relations skills • Excellent presentation skills • Excellent communication skills, especially in English • Prepare some questions to ask about the company and its future growth
2-3 pages
Fresh graduates rarely put effort in their résumés. After studying hard in university, some graduates believe that the ultimate objective is gaining that graduation scroll, without realising that it’s only just the beginning. Pay attention to details when preparing your résumé and make sure it catches the recruiters’ attention, not with a fancy résumé but with information that is essential to secure the job you are applying. Here are some common mistakes made by fresh graduates: • The résumé is too simple and straightforward: a single page résumé • It is too fancy with incomplete or insufficient information • The objectives do not match with the company’s aims • It is too lengthy with irrelevant information (“syok sendiri”) • The photo attached is too casual, which does not show professionalism
Internship importance
Internships are very important to expose fresh graduates to the real working environment. The longer the internship, the better it would be for them. Universities should be more innovative to review their syllabus to include more practical training opportunities and work-based experiences for their graduates. Government initiated programs such as SL1M and Protégé would not be necessary if fresh graduates already have related working experience between six months to one year or more. Fresh graduates with vast exposure to the working environment would be more confident when attending interviews. They will have no problem answering questions about what they have learnt as well as what they have done at the workplace during an interview.
Ideal interviewee
Preparation is very crucial before you attend any interview. The ideal candidate would ensure that they are well dressed and ready for the interview: • Polite • Good discipline • Ambitious • Creative • Organised • Pleasant • Self-assured
Word of advice
Always believe in the “Power of Dreams”. Strive for success and never give up. Improve yourself and stay ahead of others by continuously learning and acquiring new skills. Lastly, success is about being happy in life. Have a well-balanced life and be happy.

Culture
At first, when I decided to enter the automotive industry, it was very difficult because I was more interested in the education field. However, as human beings, we can only make plans. After my father passed away in 2013, I had to accompany my mother in Melaka and I decided to finish my Industrial Training in the Logistics Department at Honda Malaysia Sdn Bhd (HMSB). Just as the Malay proverb goes, “tak kenal maka tak cinta”, it was the same case for me as, after almost five months of joining HMSB, I realised that the Automotive Industry is an interesting and challenging field. That’s the reason why I decided to continue working in this field. Even though I’ve had practical training at HMSB, there was no special treatment for me as I was still required to go through a few screening interviews. Since I was interviewed for the Purchasing Department, I was asked to handle a situation where I have to negotiate with a supplier (role played by the interviewer) to buy a pen. Thus, I needed to have a good strategy in dealing with the supplier to get the best price with the best quality, despite the item costing less than RM1. Besides that, they will also appraise the way you communicated with the supplier as you will be representing Honda when you are hired.

How To Get Hired 2020
In the Cost Control Department, we not only need to control the cost of direct parts but also the commercial issues that are related to sourcing parts from local and overseas suppliers. Commercial issues have a broad meaning and every issue needs to be tackled immediately as our quick response will save the company’s profits. As a purchaser, you can’t simply just look at the cost as you must consider “QCD” (quality, cost and delivery) to make sure our cars are sold at an affordable price and the best quality. This indirectly implements Honda’s philosophy of “Three Joys”, which are the joy of creating, the joy of selling and the joy of buying. In HMSB, you will learn many things and face different issues that require different ways to solve the problem. Always remember that you need to have a strategy and good communication skills not only within the team but with your superiors as well. Utilising the Japanese practice of “Ho-Ren-So” (which translates to “report, contact and consult”) in communications with your superiors and team members allows for better teamwork and smoother work progress, and ensures everyone keeps up to date to avoid repeating similar mistakes in the future. This is one aspect of Japanese culture that has been applied in our daily tasks.
In HMSB, there are many ways to learn, especially from senior colleagues because they have more experience in the processes, technical work, etc. As a newcomer, you must be willing to learn, understand the various situations encountered and never be shy to ask questions. You can also learn from the seniors about how to come up with good strategies because every senior colleague has their own opinions and perspectives. Additionally, do more research before making a decision and put your heart into expanding your knowledge by going out of your comfort zone so you can be more successful in the future.

Internship application
I’ve always had an interest in the automotive industry and Honda is one of the most famous brands in the world. The automotive industry is always growing and improving its technology, hence this internship was beneficial to me since I am currently studying Mechanical Engineering in my university. In my third year, my university had organised a career opportunity event called Technology Education and Career. Honda Malaysia Sdn Bhd joined the event and introduced the wonders of the automotive industry to the students. So, I decided to do my internship with this company.
Enjoyable moments

Do's
• Give out ideas and solutions to every task assigned • Ask any tips from experienced associates • Take part in every event and learn as much as you can
Don'ts
• Fail to submit any work assigned in the time given • Pretend to understand when the instructions were not clear • Be silent and not ask for help in any problems
I enjoyed the culture, work environment and the learning experience. The company promotes practising Japanese culture in daily activities such as using Japanese terms, providing Japanese food to staff and performing morning exercise (Taisou). This gives a different experience for the students which is very exciting. The associates in the company are also very friendly and supportive as they often teach and even encourage students to provide ideas in solving daily problems in the production lines. Honda Malaysia Sdn Bhd gives the students the real experience of working in an automotive industry as the internship provides proper planned activities for the students to follow and learn about the production.
Learning curve
Honda Malaysia Sdn Bhd is a fast car production factory that requires its associates to be quick on the uptake and take swift action. This requires associates to keep up with the pace, improve their time management skills and solve any problem in no time. Being in the Quality Section in the Painting Department taught me how to inspect the paint condition of a car through visual inspection. The inspection requires the inspector to be familiar with defects and have good viewing skills to detect any defects. My analysing skills have also improved as the Quality Section requires a solution for each defect found and this demands for good analytical skills to find the root cause of the problem.
Life hacks
As a staff member in the Quality Section, having creative ideas is very crucial in solving problems. Solving problems without hands-on experience is not easy. The easiest way to find ideas and inspiration is to practice Genba (a Japanese term meaning “the actual place”) and tackle the problem after understanding the situation. Genba also requires communicating with other associates and this comes in handy as they will share their thoughts and ideas in order to find the solution. After assessing the information, I would use some tools to solve the problems such as the Why-why analysis and 4M factors.

The most in-demand skills fresh graduates should learn is the ability to cope with technology advancement. They need to be computer literate especially in churning out reports, analysing data, preparing the findings/solutions and constructing the findings. As for soft skills, they need to know how to communicate (interpersonal communication) as most jobs require you to speak and present your ideas. With these skills in place, it will also be an advantage for fresh graduates to have experience in project management as to equip themselves for future projects/assignments in their future employment.
Résumé mistakes
The most common mistake fresh graduates make in their résumés is the email address. Don’t use a fancy email address as it would confuse the recruiters to contact you, should your profile match with the hiring manager’s requirements. Please ensure all your contact information is updated and reachable. We would also prefer a twopage-long résumé or less. There’s no need for you to pitch in details about your final year projects. Just a brief description (objective) would do. A similar approach is applicable as well when you are furnishing information about your internship.
Ideal interviewee
Panels of interviewers are keen to explore candidates who are confident in presenting themselves. A candidate needs to understand the position they are applying for, hence they are able to relate their capabilities/ competencies with the role that is expected for them to perform. In other words, "promote yourself" to the position. Share with the interviewers ideas and potential contributions that you can bring to the team/company, should you be considered for the position.
Word of advice
There’s always a job for you, find your inner talent and let it shine. Bring it on and showcase yourself during the interview session. Don’t be disappointed if you did not make the cut, learn from it. Get feedback from the interviewers at the end of an interview session on your performance during the interview. Improvise from the feedback received and continue to excel better.
There’s always a job for you, find your inner talent and let it shine.
Internship importance
An internship does increase fresh graduates’ chances of securing a job as these experiences give them an insight into the working lifestyle. Through internships, they would be able to apply knowledge that they have acquired during their college years and at the same time learn new knowledge which were not taught during their educational years.

Most colleges and universities provide an expanded curriculum to equip students with digital skills. Many institutions are starting to realise that application is critical and have established joint ventures and MOUs to enable students to obtain handson experience in a real working environment. We do not expect fresh graduates to be experienced in immediate application of what they have learnt, but strong work ethics, communication, creative and critical thinking, problem-solving, and being a team player are what we do look out for. Machines will change how we work, and we believe because of that, these soft skills and digital literacy – knowing how to use big data and Artificial Intelligence (AI) – are increasingly important for us to become better performers. So is the propensity and interest to learn. Curiosity and experimentation. All these show your potential. Hard skills can be taught but the mastery of it depends on one’s mindset and attitude.
Résumé mistakes
A common mistake would be to submit a résumé without knowing your audience. As an employer, we would want to see résumés that reflect they have done their homework. That they have a sense of who they are as a person and the assuredness of their strengths and goals. Showing us what you stand for and the value that you can bring to an organisation makes it easier to visualise what we can offer you.
Internship importance
Internships are an avenue to gain work experience and a great way to accrue skills and network for a good job. It is also the best opportunity to "practice"; try new things and learn from trials and errors. Going for multiple internships indicate you are a driven and learningoriented individual without you having
to say it. Internships are a rich source of giving one the "edge" when it comes to screening résumés, so take the opportunity to build up your experience. Part-time jobs, freelance work or even volunteering experiences too are considered valuable work experiences. It does not matter where you gained your experience from, it just matters that you did it.
Ideal interviewee
Authentic and prepared. The ideal candidate exudes confidence. A person who embraces their true self, their values. They acknowledge their weaknesses and use their strengths for the benefit of all. They are passionate about what they do, driven and committed to excellence. Each company has a culture and it is important you are a right fit. With the ever-changing work landscape, we value agility in a person; fastthinking, responsive, and having quick decision-making abilities. Most importantly, the hunger to learn, unlearn and relearn to stay ahead. It is also very important to know what is happening in the world today.
Word of advice
The right job is rarely found on the first try because sometimes, we are not even sure what "right" is, and its meaning differs for everyone. One way to find it is by experiencing and learning, via internships for example. Having an ambition helps too. That can guide you. So, do not worry about finding the right job at your first try. The process will be the one that takes you there. Resilience is going to take you far, right up to the top of the career ladder so to speak.

Career choice
Like there are two sides to every coin, it’s always a tough choice for fresh graduates to decide on where to begin their career. With the advent of FinTech and start-ups, we mull over: would going to non-banks be more exciting and challenging, or should we go to a prominent financial institution for the chance to climb the corporate ladder? To me, joining a corporation like Maybank made more sense because of the depth and steady opportunities to learn, its regional presence and more possibilities to network. Corporations today are also embracing digital trends and flexible working, and the opportunity for employees to push boundaries and explore – all in a responsible way, of course. So, if one is up for a challenge supported by futureready infrastructure, go corporate.

job training and an international assignment to offices where Maybank has a presence. It also allows graduates to design their career based on their interest and personal preference. I was fortunate enough to receive the offer, which I then gladly accepted.
Daily hustle
As part of my rotation in the Group Digital & Strategic Alliance department, my daily tasks include researching on global digital & technological trends to preparing research decks for the Group President & CEO of Maybank. There are also times where we are required to meet and discuss collaboration opportunities with local and global FinTech. This can get very exciting especially since ASEAN is the hotbed of FinTech innovation. Other tasks include recommending how to digitise Maybank’s presence in other ASEAN countries and strategising Maybank’s digital journey moving forward. Not a day goes by without me learning something new.
Skill set
One soft skill that I feel is really important is the ability to articulate your message in a clear and concise manner including your personal thoughts as it shows confidence in your knowledge. Being able to justify it is also a good complementing skill. Another skill I’ve learnt and gained is that whenever you have a problem at work, it is always important to frame

To me it’s more on reprioritising my to-do list to ensure I can stay productive at work because as a working adult, you spend a lot of time at the office, and travelling to and from work. Hence, before joining the workforce, I made small efforts to better manage my time and priorities. In terms of projecting the image of a working adult, I am actually glad Maybank encourages a smart-casual, modern way of dressing at work. This goes to enabling an agile and adaptive mind. So, I can still wear my collared T-shirts and jeans to office, which used to be my uniform when I was a student. And this reminds me that learning is a life-long journey.

Internship application
I was afforded the privilege as I was a scholar. Although completing an internship is part of the scholarship requirement, I went through the same application and interview process as the rest and was offered an internship placement with Maybank Etiqa, the insurance arm of the company.
Enjoyable moments
Maybank Name Ahmad Fikri bin Abdullah Asuhaimi, 21 Department Human Resource Internship Programme Maybank Internship Programme
Do's
• Be proactive and willing to learn new things • Make friends with everyone! • Let others know your boundaries to avoid potential conflicts
Don'ts
• Be restricted and confined to what you think you can’t do or achieve • Forget to plan both your work and life! • Be compelled to please everyone and leave your own set of principles!
Being entrusted to organise an engagement called "FuturEtiqa with Maybank Etiqa" that connected me to all the Senior Management Committees. By observing the way they think, how they communicate and lead their teams have helped me to expand my perspectives and the insights were beneficial. Also, I had the privilege to be part of the "Maybank GO. Ahead Challenge (MGAC)", Maybank’s annual student competition as a marshal and I would not trade the experience for anything! I love how it gave me a reality check on the steps that I needed to take before reaching the top. There is no shortcut to any success, but with grit, determination and hard work, we’ll get there.
Learning curve
Part of my daily work is to do research and present my findings to my manager, and she will always remind me: one can never be perfectly prepared, but being over-prepared is always good. Her wise words propelled me to always be hungry to learn and grow. I become more proactive. I no longer wait for instructions from her, but would actively seek out to do more and to gain constructive feedback.
Life hacks
I think most interns think they are limited by experience and work structure, hence they tend to confine themselves to the amount of work that they can easily complete. The truth is the only limit we have is ourselves. Do ask for more work and constantly seek for feedback and advice from your superiors. You should always push the bar higher and deliver your best—always have a growth mindset. Maybank’s values are dear to me, so always build and nurture relationships by being a strong link and helping others grow too.

In my opinion, essential skills that companies are looking for are a strong learning ability, the ability to execute tasks, leadership capabilities and team player qualities. Although not all were born to have these abilities, they still can learn the theory via various channels such as TED talks as well as top-selling management and leadership books. Nothing is immediate, but if you don’t start, you won’t arrive at your destination.

Judging from my past experiences, I would rate “Unpolished Résumé” as one of the most common mistakes. Simply put, grammar, spelling and syntax should be in proper order in your résumé. Applicants nowadays are equipped with spelling or grammar checkers at their fingertips which they can utilise. Another major mistake is writing a lengthy résumé without a main focus. Most hiring managers only have a six-second attention span for your résumé, so be specific and highlight your best qualities. Think of your résumé as an eye-catching and clear advertisement, not a long biography.
Internship importance
For fresh graduates, doing an internship will definitely give them an edge in the job market. They will gain real-world working experience and access to networking with professionals in the field. An internship also helps fresh graduates to explore a career path and decide whether it is something they actually want to pursue after graduation. Similarly, many companies take internships as a trial employment to shortlist potential candidates for future openings, so it is a two-way process.
Ideal interviewee
Good preparation will boost candidates confidence during the interview, and candidates tend to make a bad impression when they are ill-prepared for the interview. It’s very important to make eye contact, observe your interviewer and also listen carefully to the information given and questions asked by the interviewer. Remember, the interviewer has done this many times before, so he/she will appreciate hearing the truth more than a long cover-up, so be honest and genuine with the interviewer.
Word of advice
Be humble and learn from the smartest people around you. Find yourself a mentor that you admire and respect, as he/she can help and add value to your career. Also, don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone and try something that may seem a little off track at the beginning. Most candidates may not land their dream job at first, but be persistent, don’t lose hope and keep working on it. Gaining experience and building work-life relationships are important for fresh graduates, and thereafter great things will come naturally.

Career choice
As a technology enthusiast, I've always wanted to start my career in this industry. When OPPO first entered the Malaysian market in 2014, I did some research on the company, and was immediately attracted by their trendsetting products and the way they use technology to benefit their customers. So, I decided to take the leap and apply for a position in the OPPO product department. Not long after, I received good news; that I would be part of the very first batch of OPPO-ers in Malaysia!
Into the company
Thankfully, the first interview was casual and not too intense. In the second interview, the Product Manager talked about OPPO’s company culture, and we had a general discussion about smartphones and technologies to gauge my passion and industry knowledge. The interview felt like I was chatting with a friend, and I was allowed to share my opinions freely. Of course, I did a lot of homework about OPPO’s products beforehand but I felt the preparation wasn’t needed as much as a good attitude and outlook.
Daily hustle
As a Product Manager, I am fully responsible for managing a full product lifecycle, which includes market research, sales, marketing and inventory management.

How To Get Hired 2020
Before any product launch, the first step is to undertake a lot of market research, so that we can understand consumers’ needs, our market opportunities and also what our competitors are doing. After the upper management decided to launch the product, we would work on a sales proposal to target potential business partners. After this came marketing strategy and planning, to make sure that the product could effectively reach out to our target audience. In this part of my role, I have to monitor and take control of the day-to-day management sales and marketing within the product’s lifecycle, to ensure that we achieve our monthly target performance.

The beginning of my career was the most challenging transition of my life! However, I made it through by always remembering my mantras: • Always be passionate about what you love and pursue it with energy. Passion is what drives you from the inside. Without passion, there is nothing to fuel you to go further. • Connect with people, not devices. Communication is important, and building networks will help complete your work much better. • Embrace trial and error, and learn from failure. Of course, you will make a lot of mistakes during learning, but all of these mistakes build up valuable experiences.

I learnt so much during my internship! Firstly, I became more disciplined and independent because I wanted to be on time and to set the right example. Lastly, my self-confidence improved significantly since I started at OPPO, and I think this is because I was placed in an environment where I had to work with new people from many different backgrounds.
Life hacks
In my point of view, you have to love what you do for the company. This is the most important life hack during the internship period. If you don’t love what you do, you will easily get bored and won’t perform to the best of your ability.

To be honest, I really could not decide my career path and what I wanted to do after graduating. Apart from looking for a permanent job, I also applied for graduate training programmes that were offered in the market. I went to a number of career fairs as well as GLC Open Day. After that, I was accepted into the Skim Latihan 1 Malaysia (SL1M) programme under the Boustead Group and was stationed in my current company until now. In my opinion, graduate training programmes are a good platform if you can’t decide just yet on what you want to be as some of the programmes offer job rotations that allow you to experience everything. At the end of the programme, you can decide on your preferred department.
Into the company
I applied for the SL1M programme for many government-linked companies during the GLC Open Day. I finally landed an interview with the Boustead Group. I was called in for an interview and, within one week, I was accepted. I was required to undergo a medical check-up and the offer letter was issued afterwards.

I’m in the Employee Relations unit that oversees three important aspects of Human Resource, which are Employee Relations, Insurance/Medical and Communication Services. At the moment, we are forecasting the budget to be utilised for next year. My daily tasks comprise of preparing memos and emails for internal communication, dealing with different universities in collaboration matters as well as attending and assisting any ad hoc matters pertaining to Human Resource.
Skill set
In my line of work, communication and language skills are crucial as I am dealing with external parties from diverse backgrounds and levels. Furthermore, being in a life-saving and highly regulated business, good communication skills are important. One miscommunication can lead to huge consequences that might jeopardise the business.
Then and now
When I was a student, I was pretty much carefree and did not follow any routine except attending classes. Ever since I started working, I am bound to the same routine and sometimes it can be quite stressful as I do not have the time to socialise. However, I learned to catch up with things off-work. During the weekends, I have free time for my hobbies, I go out with my friends, and I do everything that I could not do on weekdays. Fresh graduates should emphasise their working experience, participation and contributions of past activities and projects clearly in their résumé. It is not advisable to include redundant information such as family background, courses attended and expected salary in your résumé. This may cause your résumé to become too lengthy. The general rule of thumb is to keep your résumé no longer than two pages and allow your future employer to view your strengths and suitability to the targeted role as quickly and as briefly as possible.
Internship importance
Internships are crucial for fresh graduates to build their network and relationships with other people as they are usually restricted to only interacting with college mates in school. We spend at least eight hours at work connecting with people in order to communicate and leverage each other’s strengths. If your university doesn’t mandate an internship in your course outline, do take the initiative to look for internship opportunities in a company where teamwork and communication is abundant. Alternatively, you may consider a part time job which involves a lot of face-to-face interaction in order to gain experience.
Ideal interviewee
Most candidates display very good skills and qualities in their report card. However, candidates who are able to portray the positive personal qualities like being open to new ideas, eager to learn new things, adapt to the fastchanging environment, etc during the interview will be more valuable. We believe skills can be learnt, but personal qualities are embedded in someone and are hard to change.
Word of advice
Be yourself during the interview. Identify your interests and passions and work towards it. There is no point following others to secure a job which you are not keen on. Believe in yourself for the strength to make a contribution at your job and absolutely deliver what you have committed. Be instrumental in other’s success. Always take the initiative to go the extra mile and continually strive for excellence.

Setting up guidelines and standardising procedures, and ensuring project delivery became my routine job. I had to travel periodically to work with talents from different countries. There is a shared sense of satisfaction and achievement when we release something new to the public. Working with a group of talented engineers is also a daily hustle. Great communication is key to maintain a healthy working environment and nurture good relationships between team members. In a hyper growth start-up, we had to deal with multi-national candidates. Good communication skills and teamwork are essential. But as an engineer, problem-solving skills are a priority. We are usually attracted to candidates who show passion and empathy. In terms of hard skills, we prefer candidates who display strong knowledge in OOP-oriented language and modern JavaScript. Domain knowledge and cloud technology skills are an added advantage.
Then and now
It was difficult in the beginning. I had to give up my gaming time in exchange for gaining knowledge in my industry. It was not that smooth at first, learning alone with no mentor or friends in the industry. Despite the hardships, I feel it was worth it every time I look at my bank statement at the end of each month. To be honest, I feel fortunate to have been able to learn online. Don'ts

Throughout this internship, I have met a lot of experienced seniors who were willing to teach me important programming knowledge as well as gaining personal experiences that would help me grow. One of the most memorable moments of my internship was being given the opportunity to fly to China for training with the team. Being in China for a week, I was able to visit Alibaba’s headquarters at Hangzhou and it was superb. We were brought to tour the property and it seemed more like a university campus than an office building. I also managed to visit Ant Financial’s office at Z Space where I got to see their workstation and their working culture.
Learning curve
The lessons learnt here were countless. Amongst the most important lessons I learnt are how to apply new programming skills. There is so much that I was not exposed to while I was in university. Here, I learned how to apply the best practices while writing codes. Aside from that, I also learnt how to take constructive criticism well, and how important clear communication is. There were times when I misunderstood what my superiors were saying and I provided them with the wrong output. Practicing clear communication where you clarify what they are saying would help avoid such mistakes. Also, proper planning and scheduling of your time is very important for projects to be delivered on time.
Life hacks
One of the most useful life hacks that I can think of is: try to talk to other colleagues, as their words would always help guide you, maybe not in your current situation but in the future. Another life hack would be to always record or jot down the important things that your superiors tell you because there are chances that you might forget them. Lastly, if you don’t know or are unsure of something, you should always try to Google it. There is a great chance that it might help you.

Internships definitely play an important role for fresh graduates. Since university life and working life are totally different, an internship will prepare students for the working world as they will experience working together with employees from different departments to achieve organisational goals based on employers’ expectations. Students who went for internships will less likely experience a ‘culture shock’.
Ideal interviewee
You need to be brave in terms of speaking up and telling stories about yourself. Be prepared before the interview, e.g. learn a thing or two about the company you are applying for. As technology is so advanced, you can easily get information regarding the company. Once you have sufficient knowledge, you can better position yourself in terms of the areas you can contribute to the most. The basic aspects such as first impressions through body language, proper grooming and attire would be an added advantage.
Word of advice
You have to know what you are looking for and then follow your passion and interests. Do keep in mind that there is no perfect job that will provide you 100% satisfaction. You win some, you lose some. As for the first job, aim for companies that can give you the working experience and training you need to shape you into a better individual, instead of looking solely at the salary package. As a graduate with a Psychology degree, I often find difficulty in giving a satisfactory answer when asked why I chose to venture into Human Resources. Deciding a career pathway right after university was undoubtedly daunting. Due to my indecision, I re-evaluated my interests and quickly realised that I desired to become a part of a big community. Learning about people remains my burning passion. Eventually, I landed a career with a job that intrigued me the most – an HR practitioner in Top Glove, The World’s Largest Manufacturer of Gloves.

To support our rapid business expansion, I am also actively involved in the integration and alignment of HR functions during mergers and acquisitions.

It would be beneficial for HR personnel to be equipped with soft skills, particularly strong adaptability and flexibility combined with persuasion and diplomacy skills. Serving a diversified group of 18,000 employees, leveraging these abilities will encourage employees' commitment to the company in addition to maintaining harmonious relations between the management and its employees. On the other hand, the new wave of tech transformation has resulted in a major shift in HR roles where HR processes are gradually being automated. However, there are so many aspects to Product Supply, such as manufacturing, procurement and planning. I wasn’t sure which function I wanted to pursue at the moment, thus I chose the VLA programme where I am exposed to and work across these functions. Upon being shortlisted, I went through online exercises which includes three mobile games and submission of a video where I answered behavioural questions and specified my area of interest in the company. The next stage was a challenging simulation with a case study tackling a real-life business problem, which was then evaluated by the Regional Leadership Team. Finally, I had an interview with the President to learn more about the company’s culture, vision and expectations. It was a thrilling journey coming into the company!

Culture
Due to the explorative nature of the VLA programme, the tasks I have today are very different from the tasks I had when I first joined the company. Previously, I participated in an interesting project that involved designing the flow of people in the office where I applied a lean concept to make the office more efficient. Currently, I am working on tackling several continuous improvement and automation projects, such as raw material movement from the warehouse into production, and finished goods movement in the warehouse picking phase and onto outbound loading docks. Nevertheless, each involvement touches on different aspects of project management. I think the most important soft skill in my role is adaptability. Coming from a non-technical background, I am required to adapt quickly to understand the technical language used by the project managers. Hence, I must be able to pick up information from supplier presentations, consultant meetings and online research. Besides, I see flexibility as another crucial skill. In the projects I am involved in, many changes can happen on a daily basis, including changes to design details and scheduling. I believe that being flexible can help me react to these changes quickly while remaining calm, professional and composed.
I am an early sleeper and early riser, so luckily this part of the routine was not an issue! Jokes aside, instead of changing my routine and lifestyle, I focused more on changing my mindset. Despite being fully occupied with projects, assignments and exams as a student, I had a lot more recreational time and I wanted to do everything that excited me impulsively. Coming into the working life, I learned to prioritise and recognise what is truly important to me, what is worthwhile of my time, and most importantly, what is good for my mental health.

Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad www.malaysiaairports.com.my
About us Malaysia Airports was established in 1992 to focus on the operations, management and maintenance of airports. Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad was incorporated as a public listed company in the Main Board of Bursa Malaysia Securities Berhad in 1999, which became the first airport operator in Asia and the sixth worldwide to be listed in a stock exchange. Malaysia Airports is the only airport operator group with such a diverse airport portfolio, putting it in a league of its own. Airports under our stable of operations range from five international gateways, 16 domestic airports, to 18 short take-off and landing ports (STOLports) that serve the rural and remote areas in Malaysia. As the nation’s flagship international gateway, KL International Airport (KLIA) is well-positioned as a key aviation hub for Southeast Asia. It boasts the flexibility to combine short-haul and long-haul connections with facilities that integrate both full-service and low-cost airlines’ operations and geographic centrality with adequate catchment areas within four to five hours of radius flight time from KLIA. We look beyond the present and into the future by setting the pace with Next Generation Hub, a concept to transform KLIA as the ultimate hub where the world of full-service airlines and low-cost airlines are unified. While KLIA Next Generation Hub is created to promote airline interconnectivity, the world’s first purpose-built terminal dedicated for low-cost carriers, klia2, is set to be the standard bearer for other future terminals of its kind in the world. Malaysia Airports expands its expertise in airport management and investment to other airports overseas, further diversifying its airport portfolio. Today, our overseas ventures span as far as the Istanbul Sabiha Gokcen International Airport in Turkey. Malaysia Airports has also established global training centres that focus on providing airport operations and management, airport fire and rescue service, and aviation security courses to participants from across the Asia Pacific region as well as to all Malaysia Airports’ employees. Our training facilities are also certified and recognised by the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO), Airport Council International (ACI) and Department of Civil Aviation (DCA) Malaysia. The Malaysia Airports Training Centre (MATC) located in Penang is recognised as the ICAO Aviation Security Training Centre (ASTC) and MATC KLIA is recognised as the ACI Global Training Hub (GTH) for Asia Pacific region. Meanwhile, the Malaysia Airports’ School of Airport Engineering in KLIA focuses on providing training to our employees.
