How Were These Rankings Compiled? Learn more about the methodology behind Singapore’s most comprehensive and extensive survey of student opinions on graduate job applications, career expectations and today’s most popular employers.

or over a decade, the Singapore’s 100 team has surveyed fresh graduates and students at institutions of higher learning to find out which companies, firms and organisations caught their interest as they entered the working world. Our Singapore Graduate Barometer survey is promoted on the official Singapore’s 100 website, university career centres, official career events, social media and through word-ofmouth among students. Each year, students from all universities across the nation complete the survey under guaranteed anonymity, and it remains the key to honest insights regarding their career goals and job-seeking habits. Students first receive the survey, either via hyperlink or a physical copy at career centres. Unlike typical employer brand surveys, however, they are first asked about the sectors they are interested in. Afterwards, the students are requested to disclose which particular organisations or firms they prefer.

Tips for the guide

• • Keen on a specific sector? Head to page 19 for more information • Curious on what employers look for in potential hires? Turn to page 57 and find out what makes these highflying graduates stand out! • Look up key information and job opportunities on Singapore’s Leading Graduate Employers from page 67 onwards

Despite its quick completion rate (about 15 minutes), the survey boasts high numbers of responses and accuracy rates. It offers valuable and meaningful insights into student preferences, ethics and values when it comes to jobhunting. This system reflects the process most students undergo when making career choices regarding who they would like to work with. The survey not only compiles a list of Singapore’s top 100 employers, but also provides a glimpse on how these companies rank among themselves within their own sectors. Field research took place from June 2022 to March 2023. In addition, the survey also provides insights on the differences between first-year students and those in their penultimate or final years in regards to job preferences. Dissimilarities between student learning and habits can also be picked out, such as how engineering students aiming for positions in construction consultancies seek out job opportunities, as compared to those looking to enter civil engineering in the public sector.

As for the students reading this, we hope these results can help you better weigh your options between your choice of employers. We also hope that you

Accounting and Financial Management Graduate accountants have the opportunity to work with a range of employers from different industries, and on a wide variety of tasks; ranging from tax issues to day-today accounting work.

R

egardless of industry, accountants are considered a vital aspect of business. Mainly responsible for financial soundness, their job ensures that the company stays compliant with all the relevant and up-to-date legislation matters. Accountants can be found just about anywhere – from large multinationals and governmental bodies to small enterprises – and hold a significant degree of influence over strategic development via the assessment of finances. While some accountants specialise in one area of practice – such as tax accounting or internal financial reporting – others help businesses plan their budgets ahead for the financial year with management accounting. Forensic accounting is yet another area of work where cases of potential financial fraud are investigated. Depending on their specialisation and the employer’s needs, accountants may not spend all their time behind a desk. For instance, those employed by accounting firms and consultancies can find themselves at client premises for a significant chunk of their working hours. At present, companies are still exploring creative accounting solutions, as executives continue to work towards recovering their company’s prepandemic financial standing. Although Singapore’s rebound is outperforming similar economies, recovery is uneven due to ongoing sanctions and inflation. Regardless, Singapore continues to look into solutions that will help stabilise the economy.

Graduate accountants will be able to work with the Big Four accounting firms, boutique consultancy firms, and the public sector. Moreover, even without a relevant degree, graduates can still pursue an accounting certification if they want to gain entry into this field. A common path to become a practising accountant is to complete professional qualifications while working at accounting firms in junior positions or in training programmes. These tend to be rotational, giving exposure to all aspects of the business. Starting out in a large organisation can be intense, especially since graduates will find themselves juggling between learning the ropes at work and keeping up with their studies. On the other hand, opportunities can also be found in both private and public companies who onboard graduates for roles in the finance or accounts departments. Students interested in an accounting career should possess strong analytical, teamwork, communication and organisational skills. They should also be knowledgeable about current financial technologies and terms, and have a good understanding of their risks and opportunities.

Aviation, Transport and Supply Chain New consumer behaviour and the rise of e-commerce has given rise to new challenges in this sector.

S

upply chains handle the fast, safe, and effective movement of goods, materials and services. They do all this while transport planning and management oversee the designing of systems that move people and cargo through land, air, and sea. Organisations involved in supply chains include logistics and distribution enterprises, transport companies, and courier services. In transport planning, the main employers are usually local authorities, specialist consultancies, civil engineering firms, and transport providers. The logistics sector — along with air, land, and sea transportation — benefited from the Industry Revolution 4.0, boosting efficiency and innovation through tools like collaborative robotics and artificial intelligence (AI). New delivery capabilities such as autonomous vehicles have also changed supply chain designs, upping their capabilities. Despite international upheaval and the resulting disrupted supplies and routes, the industry in Southeast Asia is steadily growing, driven by changes in consumer behaviour due to the global pandemic. With this sector emerging as a crucial, promising industry, Singapore has launched a new biennial event – Transport Logistic and Air Cargo Southeast Asia. Crucially, with Singapore’s borders reopening and the surge in air traffic, tourist footfall has significantly recovered, with numbers expected to hit prepandemic levels by 2024, reinforcing the country’s position as one of the top air hubs in the world.

There are a variety of positions open to graduates regardless of degree relevance. This industry also has many sub-sectors they can consider, such as sourcing and operations management, as well as supporting roles in finance and marketing. The widespread adoption of technology in logistics has also created new roles in data management and software development. Graduates are brought into companies through training programmes, providing them with an overall introduction to the field before they choose an area of specialisation later on. Interested candidates should not only have a logical mind, but also strong problem-solving skills. Good team players are also valued by employers due to the high rate of cross-departmental collaboration. Stress management, negotiation skills and patience will also serve new hires well during hectic periods. While careers in the supply chain industry are uncommon choices among graduates, those who choose to are presented with plenty of job opportunities. With a projected growth rate of five per cent, graduates with skills specific to this sector will be in high demand in the years to come.

“Despite international upheaval and the resulting disrupted supplies and routes, the industry in Southeast Asia is steadily growing, driven by changes in consumer behaviour due to the global pandemic.”

Banking and Financial Services A key aspect of the world’s economy, graduates will play a critical role in a variety of money matters; from saving and lending to estate planning, insurance and investment.

R

egarded as the backbone of the financial sector, those in banking are responsible for the handling of cash, credit, and other financial transactions. Larger employers are typically retail banks and insurance companies who supply customers with financial management products like bank accounts. Digital banks — which debuted in 2022 — are also set to boom and drive hiring trends. However, there are other paths that graduates can take; such as in actuarial consultancies and regulatory compliance firms, which are overseen by the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS). With a wide range of positions and employers alike, the variety of roles one can undertake is vast. For example, portfolio managers can be found managing investment portfolios for both companies and individual clients or buying and selling investments on their behalf to maximise returns. Risk managers and actuaries hedge against market risks and assess complex risks based on market predictive mathematical models respectively. Continued adoption and integration of technology is the name of the game here, as banks and financial institutions look to roll out AI services and consolidate digital consumer websites and applications into “one-stopshops” to maintain market share in the face of new digital banks. On an industry-wide scale, global inflation has led to higher interest rates and a reversion to more conservative financial strategies. Graduates looking to enter the sector will need more than just a finance or business degree. To secure their position, soft skills like good leadership, an ability to work under pressure and strong communication skills are needed.

Opportunities for graduates While there are plenty of graduate trainee programmes and entry-level roles available, competition for limited spaces can be fierce. To gain an advantage, candidates should take up relevant internships and work experiences, as well as submitting their applications early to better their chances. Graduate hires usually start off as analysts, though trainee programmes may have them rotate through various departments to gain a better understanding of the entire business and its different functions. Another method to ease in new hires includes Top rated employers shadowing senior relationship managers to client meetings, allowing them to pick up essential communication skills along 1. Consulting In the wake of uncertain business outlooks and more uneven economic recovery, it is up to graduate consultants to assist enterprises with their goals and needs.

B

y assessing the ways that enterprises can improve their business performances, as well as providing unbiased insights on maintaining their competitive edge, expert consultants are often sought-after by clients big and small to help achieve their goals. These can include improving an organisation’s capacity to make profit, their effectiveness, and position in the market, as well as add or enhance their current brand value. Most industries will benefit from consultants, and their requests can require a range of differing skills and techniques. As a result, there are both consultancy firms and niche freelancers who specialise in specific areas like HR or information technology (IT), while others cover all aspects of business practices. Graduates will quickly come face-to-face with a variety of responsibilities: making recommendations, attending meetings, fact-finding and keeping clients up-to-date with the progress of various projects or strategies. There are several benefits that come with this industry, including high starting salaries and the opportunity to travel the world. However due to its popularity among graduates, competition can get stiff. While the consulting business took a large blow during the pandemic, recovery has been going strong, with a positive outlook foreseen beyond 2023. New, post-pandemic, trends have been observed as well, which are slated to greatly change the business landscape in the long run. These include “industry wars” between larger corporations, boutique firms and freelancers, as well as globalised staffing enabling remote client work.

The demanding nature of jobs in this sector means that consultants have to be extremely dedicated to the job. This is not limited to completing projects within their deadlines, but also going the extra mile to deliver added value to clients. In exchange for the attractive benefits, most management consultants work between 50-80 hours a week to get their tasks done. Most established consultancy firms recruit through graduate trainee programmes, though some do offer specific projects to high performing graduates. Placements and internships are usually extended to students in their penultimate year, which gives them a unique opportunity to impress potential employers a year ahead of the normal recruitment cycle, providing a means to test their suitability for the job. To best thrive in this industry, graduates need to be equipped with a passion for lifelong learning, communication, analytical and organisational skills, and in this time of great business change, adaptability. Having first-hand knowledge of the industry they wish to consult for is also a significant advantage as well, so it is important to keep up to date about your chosen industry.

Energy, Oil and Gas, and Utilities With the existential threat of climate change looming, this industry has taken the opportunity to explore new and sustainable long-term strategies, such as shifting to renewable energy, while still maintaining profitability.

T

he energy, oil and gas, and utilities industry encompasses any form of exploration, exploitation, and supply and management of natural resources that are crucial to a nation’s development. In addition, the field is also responsible for harnessing alternative energy sources such as solar, wind, and nuclear power. Despite lacking natural resources, Singapore is still established as one of the world’s largest oil-refining hubs, with one of the top liquid bulk ports in Asia. Advancements in oil refining have also encouraged the growth of the country’s chemical scene, giving a boost to oil and gas equipment, as well as oil rig manufacturing. In addition, Singapore also aims to become a global clean energy hub through renewable energy, and achieve net zero emissions by 2050. To do so, companies are developing new technology that allows them to tap into regional power grids, solar, low-carbon alternatives, and natural gas. In particular, Singapore has been using intelligent remote sensors and prediction models to leverage on natural gas, to help transform the nation into a trading hub for liquefied natural gas (LNG). Moreover, due to Singapore’s location near the equator, solar remains the most promising and reliable energy resource for the short term. To leverage this, Singapore is on track in regards to deploying a targeted two gigawattpeak (GWp) worth of solar panels, from common areas like rooftops, to unconventional ones such as water bodies and sheltered walkways.

With such a wide variety of roles and positions, this sector unsurprisingly comes with diverse academic requirements. For example, while commercial roles generally do not require a specific degree, those looking to go into technical ones will need to have a degree in engineering, science, or mathematics to be considered. While the economy can experience disruptions, there will always be a need for power for industries and households alike. As such, this sector is relatively unaffected by recessions. Moreover, Singapore’s strategic location has also made it a prime spot for organisations to establish regional bases, creating new opportunities for both exploration and production roles.

Engineering, Design and Manufacturing From aerospace to built environments, the best engineers combine high technical knowledge with efficient teamwork and client management skills.

E

ngineers play a huge part in creating not just the environment around us, but in aerospace and beyond, too. Those who gain satisfaction from seeing their schematics transformed into a real, tangible product, this may be the ideal industry for them. Plus, in accordance with Singapore’s post-pandemic recovery, the transport, marine and offshore and aerospace engineering sectors are growing fast. However, this also means that hopefuls should be prepared to deal with the common occurrence of tight deadlines and demanding workloads. Since even the smallest of delays can result in high costs for both contractors and investors, good time and project management skills, along with high efficiency, are highly valued among employers. The way we live, work, and play has been impacted by new technologies such as AI, robotics, and 3D printing. Along with Singapore’s target of achieving net zero emissions by 2050 driving the “green economy”, engineers are also looking for new ways to better harness alternative means of energy. In addition, there is Singapore’s drive to continue widespread adoption of automation in the industry to consider. This trend has culminated in tech-savvy graduates being highly sought-after as food manufacturers and health equipment suppliers alike continue to improve the efficiency of their manufacturing facilities and plants to better cater to new consumer behaviour. On the other hand, a decline in external demand has hit manufacturing. Growth in the manufacturing arena continued to slow down earlier this year, falling 8.9 per cent year-on-year. However, demand from China is expected to pick up the slack and help mitigate the manufacturing downturn.

Opportunities for graduates Historically, the electronics and chemicals sectors have always been the largest clusters in Singapore’s manufacturing field, and provide employment for a significant number of engineers. Fast-Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) With ever-changing consumer habits and expectations, this industry makes for an exciting and engaging one.

D

efined as non-durable products created in large quantities, fastmoving consumer goods (FMCG) range from toiletries to cleaning products, food, and cosmetics; all of which are are known for their short shelf lives and relatively low cost. With a mix of both local and multinational corporations (MNCs) to choose from, graduates can expect to be exposed to a variety of trends in the sector. For example, consumers in 2023 are now gradually shifting their spending to travel and retail, in response to the local Goods and Services Tax (GST) hike, economic slowdown, and inflation. The introduction of popular online platforms has also provided FMCG companies with another channel to reach out to new consumers or maintain present ones. To that end, companies have begun utilising consumer data through collection and analysis. This data may include consumer location, rate of engagement, online behaviour and even purchase histories. Upon interpreting the data into usable information, FMCG companies then create and implement products that can be pushed to consumers, both online and offline. The ultimate goal, however, is to allow consumers to experience the full brand value of their products. As consumers continue to raise their expectations due to their increased knowledge on the origin of their goods and services, it is only fitting for companies to focus on their corporate social responsibility (CSR), and their awareness of e-commerce convenience. As a result, this sector will continue to face substantial challenges in order to maintain and improve market share.

Larger firms in the field do offer graduate training programmes, where new hires usually go through a rotation of numerous functions in the business. They are then given the choice to specialise in a department – according to not only their interest, but their level of experience and background as well – under assistant and junior roles. Other companies may also offer general schemes that serve to test their applicants’ competencies in varying sectors. This ensures that by the end of the training period, they would be better equipped to decide what role is best suited for them. While graduates from all disciplines are generally welcomed, recruiters will still expect them to have some knowledge about both the brand and their competitors. Having an invested interest in CSR is also useful for those wishing to progress up the career ladder in this industry. A new employment trend to keep in mind is a demand for graduates skilled in both digital sales and advanced analytics . In addition, graduates who are quick, creative thinkers as well business savvy are valued by recruiters. From IT to HR, logistics to research and development (R&D), the FMCG sector has a range of job positions for any interested graduates, regardless of their academic backgrounds and interests.

Hospitality, Leisure and Tourism Graduates joining this sector will find their expertise leveraged across a variety of areas: from health and fitness to food and entertainment.

O

pportunities in hospitality, leisure, and tourism can stem from a wide variety of areas. Apart from hotel management, it also includes events, heritage tours, and entertainment. As such, graduates can tailor their job search based on their own interests. However, a good chunk of the job will include customer service, problemsolving and working in shifts, which can take up both evenings and weekends. So, be aware of these aspects when entering this sector. International tourist arrivals are expected to blow past 12 million in 2023 due to continued border reopenings and rising international flight capacities, with a full post-pandemic recovery expected by 2024. The industry is also set to hit $21 billion in tourism receipts; a jump from $14 billion in 2022. However, these predictions are based on several uncontrollable factors, such as the possibility of new Covid-19 variants. The hospitality, leisure, and tourism sector aims to maintain a meaningful and enjoyable customer experience for visitors. To this end, those interested in this field should be passionate about improving the industry through inventive and creative initiatives, while also expanding their repertoire to work across multiple disciplines.

Opportunities for graduates

Top rated employers

While recruitment is done all year round, graduate schemes under large employers – like those in hotel management – can be competitive. Those with retail or service-related work experience tend to have an advantage, as a headstart on their professional network will be beneficial. Successful graduates, once recruited, will be able to rotate through different departments in the company. Not only do they develop the basic skills needed, but it also gives them hands-on experience on the multitude of roles available, allowing them to make a more informed decision on their career path. While most job roles in this sector do not require a specific degree or qualification, some will require some skill-based certifications, such as that of culinary and facility management. However, having post-graduate qualifications in tourism or hospitality management is still advantageous, not only in experience and knowledge, but also in terms of commitment. For non-management roles, however, applicants may have to compete with non-graduates, so having relevant work experience will be beneficial here. Moreover, having soft skills such as clear communication and teamwork skills, as well as initiative will also be helpful. Interested candidates should also be adaptable, resourceful, and have plenty of fortitude.

Insurance and Risk Management The first priority of the insurance and risk management industry is to protect a client and their relevant assets from numerous threats and ensure preservation of wealth.

W

ith exponential growth in the Asia Pacific, much of the insurance industry involves safeguarding individuals or entities’ financial assets in the event of unexpected occurrences such as an accident or sudden death. While larger firms tend to dominate this sector on a global front, there are also plenty of smaller, newer, entrants that continue to flourish in Singapore. Singapore’s insurance and risk management industry continues to be a hot topic and object of scrutiny in 2023, as it forges on in its evolution to new consumer demands in data protection, healthcare, and usage of new digital technology platforms. This push is also driven by the announcement made by MAS regarding the Financial Services Transformation Roadmap (ITM) 2025 in September 2022, with the intent to expand Singapore’s capabilities in Asian insurance and risk transfer. As a result, Singapore’s general insurance industry is set to hit $4.2 billion in 2025. The General Insurance Association of Singapore (GIA) is presently driving innovative change in the sector with the new Market Development Committee, while the Life Insurance Association Singapore (LIA) has turned its attention to supporting regulators and regulations more effectively.

Opportunities for graduates This field offers a wide spectrum of careers – from corporate underwriting, to personal insurance and even reinsurance – all of which revolve around the protection of an individual or entity’s financial assets. The hiring landscape has since become more competitive, with companies jostling with each other to onboard talents familiar with various technology platforms. If successful, graduates can look forward to establishing their professional credibility and skill sets in this field. They can also expect to exercise their entrepreneurial attitudes in this industry, especially in positions that call for creative thinking, problem-solving, and a desire to help others. Landing a role in risk management, on the other hand, may require qualifications by external professional bodies. Further accreditation will be required to advance the career ladder, as well.

Investment Banking and Investment Management A challenging yet engaging sector, graduates here are relied on to make good financial decisions for their clients.

W

ith good career progression prospects and competitive remuneration, this sector is popular among graduates. However, the industry’s unpredictable and demanding nature means that they may have to work for long hours under high pressure at times. Work environments can be highly dynamic, with motivated colleagues and plenty of chances to gain early responsibilities. Unfortunately, as this sector is dependent on the economic climate, career paths can be volatile. Thankfully, the Asian market is expecting a solid recovery despite the global economic slowdown, according to the 2023 Investment Managers Outlook Survey. Equities and credit markets are expected to lead Singapore’s investment banking and investment management industry over 2023, despite tightening regulations on cryptocurrency. Changing consumer trends are also driving new value propositions to clients, with more emphasis on datadriven analytical offerings, digital toolkits and more.

Opportunities for graduates Successful applicants usually start out as investment analysts, studying the performance of companies and industries. Some organisations may offer graduate training programmes, where new hires can try out various roles in other departments, such as in management and legal controls. Most banks include formal internships as part of their recruitment process, where hopefuls have to ensure they stand out. Alternatively, graduates can explore jobs in stockbroking firms, where apart from buying and selling shares, they will also offer financial advice to investors. There are also opportunities in insurance companies and investment fund houses, though highly qualified candidates may be recruited directly as analysts, junior associates, or junior traders. Investment roles can also be found in institutions such as property developers and in the public sector. Although hiring has become more conservative in recent years, the job market remains competitive and vibrant, pushed by offshore wealth management positions that can be filled remotely, and private and specialised lending bankers needed in the Top rated employers growing Asian scene. IT and Technology A drive to understand new trends is crucial for those entering the IT and tech industry.

S

ingapore has built a globally recognised IT and technology industry well-known for its innovation and rapid development in areas such as AI, cloud computing, and data analytics. Graduates can look forward to a dynamic pool of jobs and work with cutting-edge tools. As of 2022, approximately 80 out of the world’s top 100 tech firms and 261 software-as-a-service (SaaS) companies maintain a substantial presence in Singapore, making it the perfect incubator for IT and tech companies looking to expand their business in the region. Technological expertise is a need especially in a post-pandemic world. Recent concerns on climate change have also opened opportunities in the areas of sustainability analytics, green management solutions, and predictive modelling as well.

Opportunities for graduates Various roles are available across the industry. They range from IT support and programming to development and internal operations. Jobseekers looking to explore IT roles in less conventional fields can consider working in banking, finance, or the public sector. Smaller, niche companies can also offer good entry roles. In such a fastmoving industry, it is entirely possible for a humble start-up to become a multinational company. Employers are always looking out for graduates with strong analytical skills to handle large amounts of data, to better improve operational performances. While science-based degrees – such as engineering or math – are preferred, they are not completely necessary. In fact, some graduates with backgrounds in physics are employed by the IT sector, due to the high involvement of numerical and analytical skills. However, in exchange, graduates from non-IT backgrounds may have to supplement their knowledge by taking up related courses and modules. That said, an IT-related degree does not guarantee a spot in a company. Commercial awareness, enthusiasm, and having the right attitude are a few complementary soft skills that are also needed to succeed.

Media and Advertising An ability to communicate well over a number of channels is essential to thrive in this field.

T

he dynamism from this industry crosses multiple platforms — from print and broadcast to social media. The media and advertising sector plays a key role for multiple industries, with many companies utilising it to grow their businesses. Within this sector, graduates can pick from a sprawling range of roles: from copywriting to brand management, market research to database analysis. Some of these jobs involve working on the frontlines; engaging directly with stakeholders and the public alike. Those looking for a more supportive role can consider working as animators, illustrators, or media producers. Some professionals are adept across various industries, while others can choose to establish themselves in a specialised area. Post-pandemic consumer behaviour has also taken a turn, making hybrid conferences and events the norm, expanding the potential of the industry.

Opportunities for graduates

Top rated employers

There are plenty of roles in the sector that are open to all disciplines but also some that require specific skills or qualifications. Writing, video-editing, and a graphic design skillset are especially crucial for positions in advertising and marketing. Relevant work experiences and internships are also very beneficial in this industry. It is also helpful to build up and develop a portfolio showcasing your best works to better stand out as a candidate. With the increasing prevalence of social media and digital marketing, multimedia and online skills have become essential as companies tap into these avenues as well. Employers also look for specialisation, hence, graduates should consider focusing on their individual strengths, such as their skills and knowledge in a particular field. While creativity may be the foundation of this sector, it is not paramount. Avenues in marketing, research, and communication find employers seeking creative graduates who are also capable of offering their insights through extensive research too. Good communication and teamwork are extremely useful skills, as collaboration with other departments as well as pitching ideas to stakeholders is a common occurrence. A good network will also serve graduates well and can be helpful when needing to secure talents and resources in this competitive sector. Additionally, commercial awareness and business acumen are also important aspects to have, especially when working in-house for agencies or pitching campaigns to clients.

Property and Real Estate As this sector follows a cyclical trend, graduates will need to keep a close eye on when the property market heats up or cools down.

W

ith developable land being considered a highly-valued commodity, there is a healthy demand for graduates to join the property and real estate sector. Revolving around the sale of built environments or land, to clients for revenue, this industry boasts plenty of job positions and roles, including those with developers and investors. Firms tend to operate in either one or a combination of markets: commercial, residential and rural. However, as this sector is synonymous with both the construction and finance fields, it will pick up and slow down accordingly. Singapore’s property and real estate industry has been left relatively unscathed by recent events, such as the global economic slowdown, increasing interest rates, and pressuring inflation rates. In fact, despite rising mortgage rates and cooling measures introduced in September 2022, private home prices rose once again in the first quarter of 2023, this time by 3.2 per cent. Even though challenges like climate change and supply chain pressures are mounting, demand for construction has been forecasted to remain stable through 2023. This drive will be maintained by projects such as MRT lines, water treatment plants, and Build-To-Order (BTO) flats.

Opportunities for graduates The paths graduates can take in this sector are vast – from valuation, real estate management, to urban planning and more. Taking up internship placements is a good idea, as not only does it allow graduates to gain experience in the field, it also helps make a more informed decision about the industry’s suitability. This benefits recruiters as well, since they can also offer high-performing interns a full-time position at a later date. There are also merits to working with smaller firms, as there are more opportunities to get field experience, such as participating in ongoing property deals. Soft skills that recruiters are after in this field include commercial awareness, analytical abilities, and communication skills, which will serve graduates well if they are after rapid career development and growth. Public Sector For those looking to make a positive impact on the lives of their fellow citizens, the public sector is the ideal platform to make a difference, no matter the role or ministry.

G

raduates with a deep passion to serve Singapore and its citizens can consider joining the public sector. With approximately 150,000 officers across 16 ministries and more than 50 statutory boards, it is Singapore’s biggest employer, with a range of roles that span civil defence, education and administrative service. Frontline roles include those in education, healthcare, and social services, while backroom roles such as drafting policies may require analytical skills and strategic planning. Administrative and executive roles also make up a large chunk of the public sector, and involve rolling out initiatives that can make a difference in the way people live. Over the tumultuous past few years, this industry has remained stable, and even embraced digital and cultural transformation. On a whole-ofnation scale, the public sector is driving the Singapore Green Plan 2030 in order to realise sustainable development. Key targets include planting one million trees and pushing a fifth of schools to become carbon neutral by 2030. In addition, with the evolution of technology, Singapore is making headway in its goal of digital transformation since the launch of the Smart Nation initiative in 2014. This has led to the formation of both the Government Technology Agency (GovTech) and the Smart Nation and Digital Government Office (SNDGO), which were established under the Prime Minister’s Office. Notably, SNDGO is currently developing an Artificial Government Cloud Cluster (AGCC) with Google Cloud, in order to hasten AI adoption in the public sector. GovTech is also working to develop and enhance data science and AI skills across the entire government via Digital Academy programmes, another collaboration with Google Cloud. This industry is also one of the few where retrenchment is rarely considered as a solution to an economic slowdown or downturn, as jobs in this sector are more resistant to pay cuts or layoffs.

If job stability and security are high priorities, this sector is an appealing option. Starting roles can vary depending on interest, ranging from educators to foreign service officers, analysts and more. Within these career opportunities, graduates can be recruited from specialist fields to general positions in the civil service or via graduate schemes. Typically, employers here tend to seek out potential hires from a diverse range of backgrounds — save for more specialised fields —, as it is essential that its workforce demographics and characteristics reflect the people they serve. Scientific Research and Development With an aim to tackle real-world problems, graduates should be prepared with the required technical expertise and a drive to alleviate and solve current issues.

R

&D is the heart of any new breakthroughs and is responsible for solving everyday problems. Graduates can expect to put their academic and creative knowledge to the test, working with renowned companies and leading researchers to develop new solutions funded by research grants, all in the name of benefitting the world. Under a $25 billion plan charting the country’s research landscape under the Research, Innovation and Enterprise (RIE) 2025 plan, the industry has focused on four key areas — health, sustainability, the digital economy, and manufacturing — with firm support for basic research. New manufacturing capabilities in scientific R&D are still being explored with leading biopharma companies planning to advance their biologics production in Singapore. The focus is also being placed on mental health, with a Singapore-based mental health start-up recently raising $20 million to drive R&D and develop products in Asia that are both seamless and affordable.

Opportunities for graduates Due to the specialised nature of the work, applicants must have the necessary training, qualifications, and skills of their chosen field to accumulate valuable experience over time. For scientific R&D roles in particular, opportunities can be found in the pharmaceuticals, medical devices, diagnostics, sports science, IT, environmental protection, food, health and education industries, as well as in the public sector. Aside from lab work, researchers may undertake field work or deal with administrative matters. Regardless, work experience is still required for all of them, thus graduates should still look through the requirements of the job scope before applying. Employment in this sector generally involves a structured working environment with regular hours. However, there are times where shift work, working overtime, or on weekends is needed, depending on the nature of projects and time zones. This is especially when international collaborations are involved. While a doctorate is not necessary, having a postgraduate Top rated employers education is important in securing a research-based job. BUILDING UP EXPERIENCES TO GROW

Celia Wong Manager, Project Development and Design, CapitaLand Development

2015: Joined CapitaLand’s Graduate Development Program 2016: Became a part of Funan’s project team 2018: Promoted to Senior Executive 2021: Promoted to Manager

“Technical and interpersonal skills can be honed on-the-job. The important thing is to have a positive attitude and an open mind.”

How did you get into your current line of work? After my A levels, I was offered the Building Construction Authority (BCA)-Built Environment Scholarship, under which BCA paired me up with CapitaLand as a sponsor. In a way, CapitaLand took a leap of faith in me then since I had not yet started my intended course of study - Architecture in National University of Singapore. Similarly, I grabbed this opportunity to have my tertiary education fully sponsored and a guaranteed position upon graduation in one of Asia’s largest real estate firms. The industry then and now Compared to the tech or financial sectors, the construction and real estate industry moves at a relatively slower pace. Physical buildings and projects take many years to complete and there is a prevailing sense of inertia towards change in an industry that reveres the tried and tested. To initiate positive changes, the government has been encouraging top-down digitalisation and increased efficiency through requirements such as mandating submissions in Building Information Modelling (BIM) format. Through BIM, up-todate two-dimensional drawings can be automatically generated, incorporating any latest changes from the model. Sharing this BIM model with the full suite of consultants and contractors on the same project also ensures that the whole team is working on the same page, minimising clashes or abortive works on site. In the past few years, the emphasis has pivoted to green and sustainable design and construction practices. In my role as design manager, I hope to influence and contribute positively in this aspect even though at times it could be challenging to convince various stakeholders.

What I enjoy most about my job In my role, I get to interact with various architectural firms, contractors and industry players However, asserting my views was challenging when I first started out as a fresh graduate with little experience. Representing the developer, I had to take certain positions, make decisions, and express my point of view in front of industry seniors. By remaining open and respectful, I navigated my way and learnt to take things in my stride. I was also fortunate to be involved in a greenfield project – the redevelopment of Funan DigitaLife Mall into the Funan integrated development – from start to finish, which helped me to gain experience with managing the whole project cycle. How was your path to leadership? I am still charting my path! I believe everyone can hone and demonstrate their leadership qualities without necessarily holding a leadership title. It starts with daily concerted efforts of listening respectfully, treating others like how you would wish to be treated and using your voice and your actions to make a positive difference, no matter how small. Essential skills Technical and interpersonal skills can be honed on-the-job. The important thing is to have a positive attitude and an open mind. For me, keeping healthy and spending time on hobbies or personal interests outside of work have also helped me to avoid burnouts in a stressful work environment. My advice to graduates Understand what your job would entail by talking to various industry players, be open, and do not be too harsh on yourself if you make mistakes or feel inadequate – it is only the beginning!

LEADING OTHERS TO SUCCESS

Ng Hui Wen Senior Manager, Departure Experience, Airport Operations Planning, Changi Airport Group

2016: Graduatedwith a Bachelor of Business Administration from the National University of Singapore and joined the Arrival Experience team in Changi Airport Group (CAG) 2019: Part of the team that led the planning and operationalisation of ground transport options at the Jewel Changi Airport 2020: Joined the Departure Experience team 2022: Led an enterprise-wide effort to re-open Terminal 4

“Through the years, I discovered that the key DNA of a successful leader is the desire to enable others to succeed. By enabling each team member to succeed in their area of work, the team will be able to achieve significant milestones together.”

How did you get into your current line of work? As an undergraduate specialising in operations management, I was fascinated by the idea of managing and operating the world’s most awarded airport. I joined the Talent Internship Programme in 2014 and learnt how Changi consistently delivers the best experience to passengers. In an operational role, the rewards of our efforts are very tangible as we receive immediate feedback from passengers, a process I greatly enjoyed. Furthermore, there is a sense of purpose knowing that our work contributes to Singapore as a global air hub. Needless to say, I jumped at the opportunity to join CAG upon my graduation in 2016. The industry then and now It has been a roller-coaster ride for the aviation industry with years of booming traffic decimated overnight by the Covid-19 pandemic. Thankfully, we are now striving towards full recovery. While air travel will continue to grow due to people always wanting to explore and travel, there is an urgent need to reduce reliance on manpower by improving operational efficiency through automation and digitalisation. Post-pandemic, I have been working closely with our airline partners to bring them onboard Changi’s Fast and Seamless Travel (FAST) programme, which offers selfservice options for their passengers. We reduce the need for check-in agents, while providing a better passenger experience at the same time. What I enjoy most about my job Our core mission remains unchanged – to connect lives. Seeing our passengers reconnect with their loved ones with the warmth and smiles is the strongest motivation for me. This is especially true during the COVID-19 pandemic. I was part of the team responsible for the design and implementation of the new zonal concept of operations to ensure that airport users and workers are wellprotected from the risk of COVID-19 transmission, even as the airport remains open for flight operations.

Page 56 | SINGAPORE’S 100 Leading Graduate Employers 2023

Post-pandemic, I was also part of the team to reopen Terminal 4 to welcome back passengers as air travel demand increased. Despite the differing situations in both examples, we stayed true to our mission to connect lives. How was your path to leadership? I had the opportunity to participate in multiple stretch assignments that placed me in unfamiliar terrains which accelerated my learning. With the successful completion of each assignment and experiences gained, I was eventually entrusted with the responsibility of leading a team. Through the years, I discovered that the key DNA of a successful leader is the desire to enable others to succeed. By enabling each team member to succeed in their area of work, the team will be able to achieve significant milestones together. I look forward to this ongoing development journey and growing alongside my team. Essential skills We must be a team player and contribute collectively. The airport is built with countless processes and systems intricately linked, with multiple airport partners collaborating to deliver the Changi Experience. Without a doubt, the teams behind the scenes would therefore require team players that constantly enable one another to succeed. My advice to graduates Adopt an inquisitive mind and never cease to learn. This is applicable for all industries, and especially so if you are working in CAG, where we need to innovate consistently to deliver the best experience. In doing so, you will also find yourself to have transformed at a personal level.

Strategic

2019: Promoted to Principal Research Engineer 2020: Named in the inaugural ‘Singapore 100 Women in Tech’ list 2022: Awarded the Defence Technology Prize Team (R&D) Award 2023: Appointed Director for Communications Exploitation

“To me, overcoming these complexities alone is difficult, but when harnessing the collective expertise and experience of my team, we reach greater heights!”

How did you get into your current line of work? It was a chance encounter – during my university days, I had to take on an internship as a mandatory requirement. As I looked through the list of internships , DSO stood out as it had 50 internship opportunities. Hence, I applied without hesitation. During my internship, I was impressed by the passion and dedication of DSO engineers, which made me decide to stay on as a defence R&D engineer. I also became the youngest engineer to be awarded a full sponsorship from DSO to pursue a PhD in NUS. The industry then and now Today, our world is moving much faster and as technology advances, the problems we face also increase in complexity and unpredictability. While this means that there are more areas for us to research into, the solutions delivered also needs to be developed faster and with fewer resources. The rapid progress of Artificial Intelligence (AI), quantum and new communications technologies bring in exciting and uncharted opportunities in advanced communications development. With my personal motto of “Impossible is Subjective”, I aim to find the simplest solutions to the toughest problems, to challenge convention and explore innovative ideas. Working with a great team where every member is passionate in delivering their best helps me stay motivated and focused. What I enjoy most about my job Knowing that what I do makes a difference to our nation’s defence and security drives me to keep bringing unconventional methods to solve conventional problems to constantly push the boundaries to develop more advanced communication systems for our defence. I also enjoy the opportunity to drive collaborations with both foreign defence and local R&D agencies, and being part of the integral team, which charts long-term technology development and develops impactful capabilities for our national defence.

How was your path to leadership? I built my foundation in signal processing and wireless communications system design as a research engineer, and soon took on technical lead roles. I wanted to contribute further, so I sought opportunities for leadership development with support from my bosses. My stint in strategic planning and leading the Advanced Communications Systems team gave me a wholistic view of R&D developments, providing a foundation for my deployment to MINDEF’s Future Systems and Technology Directorate (FSTD). There, I charted the R&D plans for AI and Command, Control and Communications (C3) as a Deputy Director. I also engaged with R&D entities such as start-ups and foreign academia to diversify our limited capacity. I later returned to DSO to lead more projects and continued to push boundaries in delivering solutions. It has been a meaningful, albeit challenging, learning journey. With more complex projects, I have learnt to rely on our greatest asset – people. To me, overcoming these complexities alone is difficult, but when harnessing the collective expertise and experience of my team, we reach greater heights! I am grateful for those who have journeyed with me and the opportunities I have had for shaping the way I lead. Essential skills An important part of DSO’s work is about delivering solutions in practical scenarios. As such, while your academic background is foundational in applied research, there are other essential skills like system engineering and project management, which can be learned on the job. My advice to graduates Be brave – realise that your pursuit is more than worthy of the fear to overcome. Be ambitious – do not be limited by your background. Step out and be amazed by what you can achieve.

MOVING THE WORLD

Melvin Tan Assistant Vice President, Investment and Business Development, PSA Corporation Ltd

2010: Graduated with a degree in Accountancy (Honours) from Nanyang Technological University, joined a large accounting firm 2013: Joined PSA as an Operations Executive 2015: Transited from Assistant Manager in Operations to a managerial role in HR (Workforce Strategy) 2019: Took on a Business Develop portfolio as a Senior Manager 2021: Promoted to Assistant Vice President (Investment and Business Development)

“Although things can get challenging, the satisfaction is indescribable when we align strategic intents and co-create mutually beneficial opportunities. In the business development space, 1+1 is always greater than 2!”

How did you get into your current line of work? After two years at an accounting firm as a young graduate, I wanted to further expand my horizons and challenge myself by exploring other facets of our highly complex world. So, I took a leap of faith and chartered my route out of the stable path of an auditor into a different domain to gain new experiences. This drew me to an operations role at PSA, which gave me space to branch out to different career paths. Furthermore, PSA is well-regarded as a global leader in the maritime industry, so I was eager to start my journey and advance from there. I was at the right place and the right time. PSA was going through a phase of transformation and growth, moving towards automation and digitalisation and expanding our scope of business, opening up new roles and the need for cross domain sharing and integration. While in operations, I was offered a rotation to HR to drive workforce planning and transformation. To further deepen my business acumen, I subsequently took on a role in Business Development where I oversee investment opportunities in the Southeast Asia region. The industry then and now The world is constantly evolving, but the pace and magnitude of change in the last decade has been unprecedented. Shipping lines are both merging and demerging; business sustainability and environmental awareness have shifted from being “good to have” into “must-have”; supply chain setups have evolved with influence from COVID and geo-political factors and will continue to do so. As a company or an individual, agility and adaptability are critical. This is apparent in PSA where things are constantly dynamic, with new functions being set up to drive new technologies and new jobs being created. We place emphasis on creating a purpose-driven and open mindset to prepare our staff for these new roles.

Page 58 | SINGAPORE’S 100 Leading Graduate Employers 2023

What I enjoy most about my job The positive and impactful outcomes my role brings to the business is what keeps me going. Engaging with diverse groups of stakeholders across industries, cultures, and perspectives is not easy, and its complexity can only be felt when doing it yourself. Although things can get challenging, the satisfaction is indescribable when we align strategic intents and co-create mutually beneficial opportunities. In the business development space, 1+1 is always greater than 2! Essential skills I would say the two most essential skills would be communication and critical thinking. These skills are relevant in most roles today, enabling effective solutioning and articulation of ideas. Other than receiving feedback from colleagues and mentors, these come with putting ideas into practice and conscious effort throughout my everyday work. My experience from my operations stint was exceptionally helpful. I had to manage and coordinate between multiple stakeholders to deliver in a time-critical environment. My advice to graduates Stay hungry, stay curious and always give it your best shot!

BUILDING UPON OUR MIGHT

ME5 Kristy Rose Ryan Air Force Engineer, Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF)

“As an Air Force Engineer, we are held to very high standards to ensure the airworthiness of the aircraft and systems.”

Creating a first-class Air Force takes more than brute strength – it requires unparalleled ingenuity too, on top of a flair for problem-solving and expertise in state-of-the-art aviation and weapon systems, as well as providing innovative solutions that enhance and sustain our Air Power. The deciding factor Growing up, my parents frequently brought me to the Singapore Airshow where the fascinating aerobatic displays and thunderous roar of the jet engines left a big impression on me. It was then that I decided to embark on a career in the Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF) after graduating, as it allowed me to combine my interests in engineering and airplanes.

Challenges and opportunities As an Air Force Engineer, we are held to very high standards to ensure the airworthiness of the aircraft and systems. As such, it is imperative that we continuously develop our technical competency and knowledge to do our job well. I am thankful to have been given the opportunity to attend numerous professional training courses, both overseas and local, which has helped deepen my engineering expertise. Experience and skills I was the Officer Commanding (OC) of Communication, Navigation and Electronic Warfare Flight in 808 Squadron, where I led a team of Air Force Engineers to manage and maintain the systems on board the F-16D+. I lead the team to rectify aircraft and provide engineering solutions to ensure that the aircraft systems were fit for flight.

A VARIETY OF LEARNING EXPERIENCES

Tan Lei Ni Audit Senior II, BDO LLP

2021: Graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Accountancy from the National Technological University, joined BDO LLP as an Audit Associate 2022: Promoted to Senior Audit Associate 2023: Promoted to Audit Senior II

“I am privileged to be exposed to a variety of different industries, which helps broaden my knowledge of how they operate.”

About my job I joined BDO Singapore during the COVID-19 pandemic, and since then, the firm has continued with flexible working arrangements. Regardless of where I work, however, I aim to turn on my laptop 30 minutes before work officially starts at 8:45 am. During this period, I read through my emails and spend some time updating myself on the accounting standards, which I receive regularly from the Knowledge and Professional Development team. Afterwards, I will review my to-do list that I updated the day before, which allows me to organise and prioritise any critical tasks. We often have multiple tasks on hand, so it is essential to learn to plan our tasks and complete them before their deadlines. I also arrange status calls in the morning or a quick check-up with team members on the status of their assigned tasks and enquire if they have any difficulties or have any significant findings that need further discussion. In addition, I also prepare a work allocation status file with the sections allocated to the person in charge, allowing me to monitor their status. As a senior in charge, it is important to stay updated about the audit’s progress; if there are queries that need further discussion with the client, I will either schedule a call or approach them if I am on fieldwork. When approached by team members for any difficulties they have encountered over the course of the audit, I try to understand them from their perspective to provide guidance to help them solve the difficulties faced. When I myself encounter problems at work, I will do my research to try and understand ‘‘what went wrong’’ before approaching my seniors or managers for help. I am delighted that my seniors and managers are approachable and willing to set aside their own work to listen to my queries and guide me, which helps shorten the time spent dealing with the issues.

Page 62 | SINGAPORE’S 100 Leading Graduate Employers 2023

While our official working hours end at 5:45 pm, there is no fixed end time for auditors. Sometimes, working beyond our regular hours is required, especially during peak periods when we rush to meet deadlines. However, an auditor’s life is about more than just work; I also spend quality time with my team members. For example, we would head out for lunch in a group, using this chance to update each other on our life or discuss non-work-related topics. This break from work allows us to understand and form closer bonds with each other, which helps build a stronger sense of teamwork when working together on the audit engagement. Sometimes, we even plan short trips together during offpeak periods! While the workload may be hectic during the peak period, we aim to achieve work-life balance whenever possible. Important skills I have learned many skills as an auditor, such as time management, communication, and multi-tasking skills. I am privileged to be exposed to a variety of different industries, which has helped broaden my knowledge of how they operate. The knowledge, skill sets and experience I have gained thus far have been both invaluable and useful.

FACING CHALLENGES WITH POSITIVITY

Wong Ming Kang Senior Analyst, Southeast Asia, CapitaLand Investment Limited

2021: Graduated with a Bachelor of Science (Real Estate) with Honours (Highest Distinction) from National University of Singapore (NUS) 2021: Joined CapitaLand Graduate Development Programme (GDP) with rotations in Funan’s Centre Management Office (CMO), CapitaLand Ascendas REIT (CLAR), and Digital Ventures 2022: Completed CapitaLand GDP and deployed to Southeast Asia (SEA) as a Senior Analyst

“As newcomers, we have the opportunity to challenge traditional approaches and look for better ways of doing things in a respectful and sensible manner.”

Getting started I have always been interested in the built-environment sector since my time at Singapore Polytechnic, majoring in Facilities Management. As I transitioned to specialising in Real Estate at NUS, I developed an appreciation for the diverse disciplines contributing to every real estate life cycle facet. This realisation sparked my interest in CapitaLand’s Graduate Development Programme (GDP), where I could explore different integral functions that drive CapitaLand’s ecosystem. The people I met and the lessons I learned during my three rotations were invaluable, giving me a holistic perspective of the organisation’s operation. I am excited to continue learning and contributing to the CapitaLand ecosystem to the best of my abilities. About my role In my current role, I support the CapitaLand Southeast Asia Logistics Fund (CSLF), which leverages innovation and technology to provide advanced logistics and warehouse solutions in the region. I work with the team in developing investment strategies and evaluating deals across key markets of Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, and Indonesia. The saying “together, we are stronger” resonates with me in the SEA department. I have witnessed how the five key markets synergise to enhance the region’s competitiveness globally. Moreover, the strength of CapitaLand’s ecosystem is evident as colleagues from CapitaLand Development (CLD) and CapitaLand Investment (CLI) collaborate, leveraging their on-the-ground expertise to shape our strategies in SEA. What I enjoy most about my job I have been fortunate enough to have met mentors in CapitaLand who have been nothing but patient, trusting and nurturing. The supportive environment that I experienced at the beginning of my professional career is what I value most about my job. While challenges are inevitable in any

role, the nurturing culture has empowered me to overcome learning curves with confidence. Then and now I often grapple with self-doubt and concerns about whether I am doing enough, especially at the start of each rotation, where I enter into a new environment with a fresh learning curve that can be uncomfortable and intimidating. However, throughout my rotations, I have learned the importance of pacing myself while maintaining a positive attitude. Sometimes, even though it feels like we are unable to see the light at the end of the tunnel, we just need to have faith in taking that single next step, and the rest tends to fall into place. Essential skills Effective communication and asking questions are vital for performing any task successfully. In a fastpaced business environment, it is crucial to clarify doubts promptly by seeking answers directly instead of spending excessive time searching the internet endlessly. Innovative thinking and bringing fresh perspectives are also key skills that I believe fresh graduates could bring to an organisation. As newcomers, we have the opportunity to challenge traditional approaches and look for better ways of doing things in a respectful and sensible manner. My time in Digital Ventures was particularly rewarding, as it allowed me to develop skills in being enterprising and innovative. Working in a new department focused on venture building provided a blank canvas with minimal restrictions, enabling me to explore creative solutions from scratch. My advice to graduates Career progression does not always follow a linear path. Setbacks and challenges are valuable lessons that provide you with stepping stones towards success. Trust yourself, exercise patience, embrace the unknown and cultivate resilience as you navigate through uncertainties whilst seeking opportunities for growth.

INNOVATING THROUGH CHALLENGES

Lenet Kong Assistant Manager, Airport Operations Planning, Changi Airport Group

2021: Graduated with Bachelor with Honours in Business Administration (Operations and Marketing) from National University of Singapore 2021: Joined Changi Airport Group as a Senior Associate 2023: Promoted to Assistant Manager

“It is most fulfilling to witness the tangible outcomes of our work benefiting passengers or airport staff and knowing that our efforts add value and create a positive impact on someone’s life.”

Getting started I have always been intrigued to find out what goes on behind the scenes of a world-renowned airport. With my specialisation in operations, joining airport operations was a good opportunity to make practical use of my classroom learnings and at the same time discover what it takes to be the world’s best airport. During the third year of my university studies, I interned at Changi Airport Group (CAG) under the Talent Internship Programme (TIP) and was offered full time employment. My internship experience was very positive – the company culture and nature of work gave me confidence that CAG is where I can grow my career and make tangible impact. I returned to the same team I interned with and started off as a Senior Associate in Airport Operations Planning. About my role My main role in Airport Operations Planning is to oversee the taxi systems that facilitate taxi operations at the airport. This encompasses ensuring day-today functioning of the different systems, exploring ways to innovate and improve the efficiency of taxi operations using technology, and planning for the future of airport ground transport. Prior to joining, I had no idea of the complexity and scale of taxi operations at the airport; it includes dedicated systems, infrastructure and manpower working together. The dynamic nature of the job that requires collaborating with multiple stakeholders to handle unforeseen situations and problem-solve with tight timelines make it challenging, yet exciting. What I enjoy most about my job I really appreciate the opportunities to explore projects beyond my regular job scope. Although my main portfolio focuses on taxi systems, I had the chance to take part in other projects such as planning the year-end glamping event at Jewel Changi Airport, managing tenants and leases, and coming up with business development ideas for Hub & Spoke (one of the F&B offerings

Page 64 | SINGAPORE’S 100 Leading Graduate Employers 2023

at the Changi Airport Connector). CAG’s culture supports crosslearning, allowing us to pick up new skills that we may not be exposed to in our regular work. It is most fulfilling to witness the tangible outcomes of our work benefiting passengers or airport staff and knowing that our efforts add value and create a positive impact on someone’s life. Then and now Different stages of one’s career present different hurdles. I think it is important to adapt and progress as I grow in my role. In the beginning, my biggest challenge was understanding the intricacies of the operations in the airport. There was a need to be on ground a lot as many aspects could only be learned through hands-on experiences. Subsequently, it shifted to being able to challenge the status quo, to improve and futureproof existing processes. I am now learning to develop and train my critical thinking and the ability to relearn. Essential skills Strong interpersonal skills are essential in Airport Operations as there is a significant focus on stakeholder management, involving different departments within CAG and with external parties. As different stakeholders often pursue their own interests, the ability to negotiate and understand others’ perspective is crucial in achieving mutually beneficial outcomes. Thinking out of the box also plays a vital role as the key to excellent and sustainable operations lies in a continuous cycle of optimisation and innovation. These skills must be honed over time and experience. I think what is most important is the willingness to learn and understand where your areas of improvement are. My advice to graduates It is normal to feel lost or uncertain about what are the “correct” next steps. Take time to figure out what matters to you and gives you a sense of purpose. Embrace experimenting and making mistakes – it is a neverending learning process!

EMPOWERING INNOVATION TO HELP OTHERS

Chang Su Min Manager, Self-Employed Collections Department, Central Provident Fund Board

2020: Graduated with degree in Sociology from the Nanyang Technological University 2020: Joined the Central Provident Fund Board as a Manager

“Each day brings about exciting challenges, yet I continue to be empowered with the autonomy to brainstorm and propose new ideas, which keeps me going.”

Getting started I have always wanted to make a meaningful impact in people’s lives. By this guiding principle, while job-hunting, I focused on citizencentric job postings and that led me to CPFB. One thing led to another and here I am in a department that focuses on helping self-employed persons save for their healthcare needs. This role brought a new challenge to my life as it opened my eyes to the diverse array of citizens that I would be interacting with – citizens whom I might not know personally yet am able to help! About my role In my current role, we actively seek opportunities to collaborate with different agencies to educate self-employed persons on the importance of building up their healthcare savings. Other than requiring a strong understanding of both business needs and IT systems, this job also encourages me to hone important skill sets such as project implementation and management of various stakeholders. Thus far, my colleagues and I have embarked on several projects and outreach programmes to improve the communications and service experience for self-employed persons.

Then and now Adapting to a post-pandemic lifestyle while entering the work force has presented numerous challenges, especially having to learn and adapt in a short time for projects with tight timelines. Fortunately, I was surrounded by supportive and patient supervisors and colleagues who have guided me through those times. Essential skills It is important to be open-minded at the workplace as it encourages innovation and creativity. It also helps us consider different perspectives in today’s everchanging workplace and navigate complex problems while making more informed decisions. My advice to graduates Never be afraid to try something new because life gets boring when you stay within the confines of your comfort zone and the limits of what you already know!

What I enjoy most about my job Despite having been on the job for three years, no single day is the same. Each day brings about exciting challenges, yet I continue to be empowered with the autonomy to brainstorm and propose new ideas, which keeps me going. On top of gaining new knowledge, I am also given the opportunity to develop my skills in various domains. Of course, some days things do not go as planned, but that is when I put my critical thinking and problemsolving skills to the test.

STAYING CURIOUS AND INNOVATIVE

Kwa Zhi Ying Antenna Research Engineer, DSO National Laboratories

2019: Awarded the DSO Merit Scholarship (formerly DSO SOAR) 2020: Graduated with a Degree in Electrical Engineering from the National University of Singapore (NUS) 2020: Joined DSO as an Antenna Research Engineer

“Problem-solving ingenuity is about applying sound theory and being open to adopting solutions that have yet to be tested. This is especially useful in light of the complex challenges that we face on a day-to-day basis.”

Getting started Ever since primary school, I have always been fascinated with electronics. This passion intensified over the years such that I would accumulate components, tools and measuring instruments to build a mini laboratory at home. When the time came, it felt natural to pursue a degree in electrical engineering at the National University of Singapore (NUS). During my third year, I interned under DSO’s Antenna Systems Laboratory (ASL). The breadth of passive and active antennas that ASL has developed over the years resonated with me and cemented my passion towards specialising in antennas and radio-frequency (RF). The team encouraged me to apply for the DSO Merit Scholarship (formerly DSO SOAR) which I did. This helped to kick-start my career with them. About my role As an antenna research engineer from the Engineering Division in DSO, my expertise lies in the design and implementation of antenna systems used for various applications such as radar, navigation, tracking and communications. These antenna systems are mission critical and fitted across a spectrum of sea, land, air and space platforms. What I enjoy most about my job The beginning of an antenna development cycle entails research into the current state-of-the-art. Due to the cutting-edge nature of our work, we often venture into the unknown, pushing us to design novel solutions unique to the market. Our work is challenging yet high in impact, hence the sense of achievement is immense when the system is brought to fruition. In addition to technical work, I also am involved in DSO’s outreach activities. I actively coordinate the annual World of Science (WOS) Electromagnetics workshop held during the June holidays for students. The fulfilment of sowing the seeds of interest in technology in the next generation of young engineers is priceless.

Page 66 | SINGAPORE’S 100 Leading Graduate Employers 2023

Then and now When I first joined, the learning curve was truly steep. Many of the electromagnetic simulation methodologies, component choice, hardware fabrication or measurement techniques were very foreign to me. I am very fortunate to be mentored by a pool of high-level technical colleagues who possess a wealth of experience. They also spontaneously offer advice and help whenever I faced difficulties, which helped ease me into the environment in no time. Over the years, this background has helped me grow from strength to strength in terms of technical competency and teamwork. Essential skills From my experience in a Research and Development (R&D) environment, two invaluable skills for success are problem-solving ingenuity and collaborative outlook. Problem-solving ingenuity is about applying sound theory and being open to adopting solutions that have yet to be tested. This is especially useful in light of the complex challenges that we face on a day-to-day basis. Collaborative outlook is about working well with the Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) on tap. By having an environment where open sharing of knowledge is encouraged, we can leverage on the perspectives (and strengths) of everyone. On an organisational level, the sum is often greater than its parts. My advice to graduates Embrace continuous learning. Graduation is not the end of your education; it is just the beginning. With the ever-changing landscape, stay curious and update yourself with new skills and technologies throughout your career. In addition, cultivate a resilient and positive mindset. Learn from failures, adapt, and move forward with determination.

BREAKTHROUGHS AND BIG BREAKS

ME5 Shaman Suresh Depot Commander, The Singapore Army

“As an engineer, thinking about problems and tinkering towards a solution is an everyday affair.”

What can you tell us about Our Army’s top tech? That is classified! What I will say is that as a Military Expert, you can be sure of working on our many marvels first-hand. As an engineer, thinking about problems and tinkering towards a solution is an everyday affair. We apply our engineering expertise in many ways to solve issues such as obsolescence to ensure Our Army has the decisive edge. For me, that involves working on behemoths like the Bionix armoured fighting vehicles and Bronco All Terrain Tracked Carriers. Trust me when I say that there is no greater satisfaction than seeing them in action!

Is technology the main star in Our Army? While we leverage technology to deliver more with less, Our Army’s unity and heart is what gives us the edge. During the initial outbreak of COVID-19, I was part of a support operations team. It was truly an inspiring experience to see everyone come together to get the job done. It really impressed upon my heart that when the situation calls for it, Our Army is ready and our people are committed to work together for the nation.

How has your engineering expertise grown and where is it headed? Our Army has definitely developed my skill set. In the area of courses, the Logistics Officer Cadet Course built up my leadership skills while others expanded my engineering skills in areas such as coding, data analytics and 3D printing. Our Army makes active efforts to ensure we pick up new skills, as well as gain exposure and progress. This includes high-value skills that are also highly sought after in the private sector, such as people management and logistics planning.

NURTURING LEADERS BEYOND THE CLASSROOM

Chia Jin Guo (Caleb) Outdoor Adventure Educator, Ministry of Education (MOE) Physical, Sports & Outdoor Education Branch (Outdoor Adventure Learning Centre)

2016: Graduated with Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Education from Nanyang Technological University, Singapore 2016: Joined Frontier Primary School as a Physical Education (PE) Teacher 2017: Led and coordinated school-wide programmes for co-curricular activities 2021: Joined Physical, Sports & Outdoor Education Branch as an Outdoor Adventure Educator (OAE)

“While teaching the students, be open to being taught by them as well.”

Getting started I have always enjoyed participating and competing in sports from a young age, and my career aspirations include being a professional athlete or a PE teacher. When the opportunity to be a PE teacher came after completing my A-level examination, I decided to enter the National Institute of Education (NIE) to train in educational psychology and sports science. Prior to entering NIE for my tertiary education, I was a contract teacher for a year. During my contract teaching stint, I got to experience and realise how much impact and influence I had on the young minds under my charge. It reinforced my sense of purpose, and I felt privileged to be able to make a difference in shaping the lives of children. About my role In my current role as an OAE, I champion outdoor education by conducting Primary 5 cohort camps as a group facilitator. As an Education Officer in the Outdoor Adventure Learning Centre, I also get the opportunity to take on some of the tasks and responsibilities of an Outdoor Programme Manager such as conducting professional development sessions on pedagogy and classroom management strategies for my OAE colleagues who did not go through teacher training at NIE. I love how the outdoor environment can be so intriguing and mesmerising at the same time. Being in and working with the elements of the outdoors is the most interesting and challenging part of my job. What I enjoy most about my job As an educator, I feel heartened whenever my students write notes of appreciation and mention what they have learnt from my lessons or whenever I “catch” them applying the values taught. I also find it rewarding when students who did not initially believe in themselves managed to put in their best and achieve success.

Page 68 | SINGAPORE’S 100 Leading Graduate Employers 2023

Then and now When I first started teaching, I faced challenges when my classroom lessons did not go according to plan. Over the years, through learning from my colleagues and mentors, I managed to increase the “tools” in my “toolbox” and become more prepared for unforeseen circumstances. This is even more crucial now that my “classroom” is in the great outdoors. One key thing I have learnt is that one can never be over-prepared. I also believe that honing one’s skills as an educator is a continuous journey. Every mileage that I clock and the experience that I gain will add to my repertoire of skills as a PE teacher and as an OAE. Essential skills As PE teachers or OAEs, we need to be creative and flexible when putting into practice what we have learnt from theory or from the experiences shared by others when we are on the ground. We may have planned for wet weather and contingencies, but there could be other changes that would disrupt our plans. Being able to adapt quickly to unforeseen changes and devise creative solutions to achieve the learning outcomes amidst external challenges would be essential. On a personal level, developing a gratitude mindset has kept me going. I have been taught that “gratitude begins when the sense of entitlement ends; entitlement begins when the sense of gratitude ends”. Therefore, I constantly remind myself to be thankful for the opportunity and platform to shape the lives of the next generation. My advice to graduates Remember that education is a reciprocal journey. While teaching the students, be open to being taught by them as well. Youths are leaders today, not just tomorrow. Believing in them and encouraging them to be their best will also bring out the best in you.

A FULFILMENT IN HELPING OTHERS

Maria Binte Mohamad Ayub Commercial Banking Relationship Manager, Oversea-Chinese Banking Corporation (OCBC)

2020 – 2021: FRANKpreneurship with OCBC’s Group Customer Experience (GCX), second internship with Enterprise Banking Industries (EBI). 2021: Graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Business from Singapore Management University (Communications and Marketing). 2021: Joined OCBC’s 2-year Graduate Talent Programme. 2022: Promoted to Relationship Associate (RA). 2023: Promoted to Relationship Manager (RM).

“An RM must also be inquisitive and adaptive, as many of the required skillsets are acquired on the job.”

Getting started My career in OCBC started as a FRANKpreneur under OCBC’s flagship internship programme in the Market Research team under GCX. During the internship, I was intrigued to find that Banking went beyond money and numbers. However, as a Communications and Marketing major, I was not sure where to start or which area of Banking best suited my skills. I was fortunate to have a supportive mentor, Wilfred Lieu, who guided me on some key roles and encouraged me to network with other internal stakeholders to find out more. Thankfully, the seniors in OCBC were very receptive to speaking with me about the various functions across the organisation and I was subsequently offered an internship under EBI. Fast forward 2.5 years, I am servicing a portfolio of companies in the Resources industry who have dealings across Asia. About my role A key part of my role is to support customer’s business needs and help them grow sustainably by offering curated banking solutions such as structured trade financing, working capital loans, fixed asset financing and more. These, together with advisory services, are provided to the customers in collaboration with our various product partners such as Group Treasury, Global Transaction Banking and Global Investment Banking. As part of my career development and growth, I have also been tasked to support the department’s various projects such as our sustainability initiatives, digital transformation efforts, industry research and quarterly reviews. These projects enabled me to have exposure to the different industries that EBI covers beyond my portfolio in the Resources industry, and I also have the chance to be rotated to these industry teams in the future.

What I enjoy most about my job The most exciting part of the job is the access that we have to SME owners. It is always inspiring to hear about their passions, how they started, and the challenges they have overcome throughout their journey. This allows me to understand the intricacies of their businesses and further motivates me to help them in their continued growth. As EBI serves SMEs across various industries, I am also able to observe how businesses in different industries differ and learn what products would best suit their needs. Then and now OCBC’s nurturing culture is prevalent in my department, where we have many experienced RMs who assist in coaching new joiners. With the training provided and exposure to several customers across the department’s coverage, I am now better equipped with increased product knowledge and effective communication skills to engage customers. I am now able to formulate structured solutions to meet customer’s needs while managing credit risk. Having said that, there is still a lot more to learn and I am excited to be able to grow with the team. Essential skills While it is very important to have an understanding of the various banking products, one cannot discount the importance of having interpersonal relationship skills; an RM must be able to connect with their customers to deeply understand the customer profile before offering banking solutions. An RM must also be inquisitive and adaptive, as many of the required skillsets are acquired on the job. My advice to graduates For those interested in Banking, consider a role where you can get exposure to a variety of customers, products and solutions that will help tremendously in your career. Either way, always keep an open mind – consider each day an opportunity to learn and never be afraid to ask questions.

STRIVING FOR CREATIVITY IN LEARNING

Muhamad Mikhail Bin Muhamad Tahir Senior Manager, Indonesia Singapore Tourism Board

2018: Graduated with degree in Business Administration (specialization in accounting and marketing) from the National University of Singapore and joined STB’s Management Associate program 2019: Promoted to Assistant Manager after completing STB’s Management Associate program 2020-2021: Promoted to Manager 2022-Present: Promoted to Senior Manager

“I am thankful that STB threw me in the deep end and provided me the opportunity to work on marketing-related projects, even as a fresh grad.”

Getting started I studied two very different specializations, accounting and marketing, and found that I was more passionate about the latter. The allure of marketing Singapore through STB, which has been traditionally very creative in its execution, led me to apply for the MA program for my first job. I am thankful that STB threw me in the deep end and provided me the opportunity to work on marketingrelated projects, even as a fresh grad. I worked with agencies to produce video assets for tourism campaigns, which allowed me to flex my creativity. I also got to work on promoting the International Champions Cup as part of STB’s push for leisure events, and as a huge football fan, I was ecstatic! About my role As the job is project-based, my day-to-day is dependent on the stage the project is at, and we oversee projects from the start (pitching), middle (executing) to end (review). The interesting bit about it is due to the nature of tourism and its intersection with lifestyle/ entertainment, the possibilities for collaboration with all sorts of partners are endless – from instant noodle brands, travel agents, and even mega stars like Billie Eilish! What I enjoy most about my job I like how STB has so many different divisions, and that rotations are encouraged after two years to expose STBians to other business functions of the Board. You can gain exposure to different areas of work, be it working on something like leading a branded entertainment piece, drafting a policy for the hospitality industry or doing business development work under MICE.

Page 70 | SINGAPORE’S 100 Leading Graduate Employers 2023

Then and now Prior to my posting to Indonesia, I was worried about whether I was able to learn about the characteristics and nuances of the Indonesian traveller and the local trade ecosystem well enough to be able to share my findings with HQ. But I have grown to learn that the process is a gradual one, and you will form an understanding over time eventually without having to force it – whether it be through talking to stakeholders at networking events, working on projects with partners, or even scrolling the local TikTok feed on my bed! Essential skills I rely more on soft skills to do my job like critical thinking, problem solving and creativity. As a Statutory Board, we have to ensure the activities we do contributes to either the economy, the tourism sector, or the public. Thus, we do have to justify why resources spent on a particular project are more efficient than say, another project. My advice to graduates I am interest-driven, so I would advise finding a project you can relate to, so you can be more productive or effective. At project level, I usually try to flip the switch and imagine myself as a consumer to determine what works – would I care for this destination Singapore ad, deal or event?
