WELCOME TO THE 2016 SUMMER SEASON This year marks Donald Runnicles’ tenth anniversary as Music Director of the Grand Teton Music Festival. The season is a tribute to his Ten Years in the Tetons, honoring his significant contributions to the Grand Teton Music Festival and the Jackson Hole community. In celebrating this momentous occasion, the sensational line-up includes classical music’s most influential artists and exciting repertoire, presented throughout Jackson Hole. Never has a season brought such anticipation! We invite you to join us in celebrating Maestro Runnicles’ tenure by attending the more than 40 concerts and events this summer. Appearing with the Festival Orchestra, an all-star ensemble comprised of more than 200 musicians from leading orchestras in North America, are classical music superstars including Joshua Bell, Nicola Benedetti, and Jonathan Biss. The 2016 Summer Season promises seven jubilant weeks of exhilarating music with the iconic Teton Mountain range as an unparalleled backdrop.

Joshua Bell will be the one remembered in 50 years’ time. – THE STRAD As one of the world’s preeminent musicians, virtuoso violinist Joshua Bell makes his GTMF debut in the annual Gala Concert with the Festival Orchestra and Maestro Donald Runnicles. In this must-see event, Mr. Bell performs Saint-Saëns’ Violin Concerto No. 3, Piazzolla’s “Buenos Aires Summer” from The Four Seasons of Buenos Aires, and one of the most beloved classical works ever—“Summer” from Vivaldi’s Four Seasons. A violinist for the ages, Joshua Bell’s gala performance will certainly be one of the season’s best.

The National [Collegiate Chorale] of Scotland was thrilling … Runnicles conducted much of the work at a cracking pace, and the choral attack was electrifying … we went home with their glorious sound ringing in our ears. – THE SCOTSMAN The highlight of opening week, Maestro Runnicles, the National Collegiate Chorale of Scotland, several star soloists, and the Festival Orchestra join in an exciting and powerful performance of Beethoven’s monumental Symphony No. 9. Experience the symphony’s riveting final movement “Ode to Joy” live, an unforgettable musical measure and one of classical music’s most exhilarating combinations of orchestra and chorus. The concert opens with a world premiere of For Love of the Mountains by the Pulitzer prize-winning composer Aaron Jay Kernis written in honor of Maestro Runnicles’ Tenth Anniversary.

There is no better musical group to appear as the Festival’s first performance at the Pink Garter Theatre. This summer, experience classical music and cocktails in a club setting and hear what the rest of the country has been talking about! Classically trained trio Time for Three joyously defies musical genres. Mixing virtuosity and showmanship, violinists Nick Kendall and Nikki Chooi and double-bassist Ranaan Meyer perform music from Bach to Brahms and beyond, leaving audiences to savor every minute. This summer, the trio performs works from Pulitzer Prize-winning composers, as well as ingenious arrangements of popular artists such as the Beatles, Kanye West, Katy Perry, and Justin Timberlake. Ms. Benedetti’s sound in the stratosphere of her register is almost improbably pure and gleaming; at times it resembled the supernatural song of a Theremin.

As one of classical music’s most transcendent and sought-after violinists, Nicola Benedetti will perform three times during her weeklong residency. With Donald Runnicles at the piano, Ms. Benedetti will perform Beethoven’s ethereal and final Violin Sonata on July 21. Ms. Benedetti concludes her residency in concert with the Festival Orchestra on July 22 and 23, performing a virtuosic Violin Concerto by the notable Hollywood film composer, Erich Korngold.

P IANIST JONATHAN BISS AND BEETHOVEN WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 10 | 7PM FRIDAY, AUGUST 12 | 8PM SATURDAY, AUGUST 13 | 6PM

The American pianist Jonathan Biss is the most consistently interesting Beethovenist of his thirty-something generation; nobody else interrogates the score with such intensity, or infuses it with such electricity in performance. – INDEPENDENT Amidst his comprehensive nine-year cycle of performing and recording Beethoven’s complete piano sonatas, master pianist Jonathan Biss joins the Festival in a weeklong residency. On August 10, Mr. Biss will perform a solo piano recital comprised of Beethoven sonatas before joining the Festival Orchestra and conductor James Conlon in Beethoven’s melodic Piano Concerto No. 2 (August 12 & 13). Under his expert command, hear why critics consider Mr. Biss to be the foremost interpreter of Beethoven.

Johannes Moser’s tone was big and warm where needed, and he proved himself capable of some Rostropovich-like wild abandon … he was consistently eloquent.

Amidst appearances in the world’s most elite venues, German-Canadian powerhouse cellist Johannes Moser takes the Walk Festival Hall stage for a performance of Tchaikovsky’s Variations on a Rococo Theme (July 15 & 16), a piece which awarded him the top prize at the International Tchaikovsky Competition. Prior to his Festival Orchestra feature, Mr. Moser lends his rich and impassioned artistry to a chamber music performance of Mendelssohn’s Octet (July 14), in concert with violinist Karina Canellakis and the Festival Orchestra’s finest string musicians.

PIANISTS THE NAUGHTON SISTERS WEDNESDAY, JULY 27 | 6PM THURSDAY, JULY 28 | 8PM FRIDAY, JULY 29 | 8PM SATURDAY, JULY 30 | 6PM

An identical-twin, duo-piano team sounds suspiciously like a gimmick assuring fast fame for the mediocre, but the Naughton sisters proved that they are worthy of every ounce of success which comes their way. Their recital displayed stellar musicianship, technical mastery, and awe-inspiring artistry.

Outstanding piano duo Christina and Michelle Naughton take residency during the week of July 26. They exercise their mastery over four days, beginning with an appearance in Saint-Saëns’ Carnival of the Animals, featured in GTMF’s Free Family Orchestra concert (July 27). The following evening, they perform the electric Rachmaninoff Suite No. 2 for Two Pianos as part of the Thursday night Chamber Music program. Concluding their thrilling week of music, the Naughton’s highlight the weekend Festival Orchestra concerts with Poulenc’s acerbic and witty Concerto for Two Pianos (July 29 & 30).

Donald Runnicles’ feeling for the music’s emotional interior was equaled by his command of its technically complex exterior. – THE NEW YORK TIMES Celebrate Music Director Donald Runnicles’ Ten Years in the Tetons in this Opening Week stage-seated concert. Maestro Runnicles performs as a pianist in an intimate evening of chamber music with two of his dearest colleagues—mezzo-soprano Kelley O’Connor and legendary cellist Lynn Harrell. Together, the trio will perform a selection of Maestro Runnicles’ favorite works.

World-class percussionist and Jackson Hole favorite Colin Currie returns to Walk Festival Hall for performances with the Festival Orchestra. A multi-instrumental percussion virtuoso, Mr. Currie delivers an energetic and memorable display of showmanship. During these performances, Mr. Currie will perform Rouse’s sonorous percussion concerto, Der gerettete Alberich.

FESTIVAL ORCHESTRA

Festival Orchestra concerts (Fridays at 8PM and Saturdays at 6PM) are the crown jewel of the Grand Teton Music Festival. Featuring the Festival Musicians led by internationally renowned Music Director Donald Runnicles, these concerts present the very best of symphonic music. ANNUAL GALA CONCERT

Each season, GTMF is proud to present a truly exquisite performance featuring classical music’s preeminent stars. For one evening only, the visiting artist performs with the Festival Orchestra under the baton of Maestro Donald Runnicles. GTMF PRESENTS

The GTMF Presents series features popular musicians who expand the boundaries of classical music. Musicians in this series apply their traditional classical training to create exciting contemporary works, challenging perceptions of what classical music can mean. Chamber Music is an intimate concert performed by a small ensemble of two or more players, but rarely more than 10. Soloists who appear with the Festival Orchestra often make guest appearances in this series. These curated concerts (Thursdays at 8PM) feature much of the core classical repertoire with a surprise here and there performed expertly by members of the Festival Orchestra. | TICKETS $25

Celebrate July 4th in Walk Festival Hall with patriotic favorites such as The Armed Forces Salute and America the Beautiful. Maestro Donald Runnicles leads the Festival Orchestra in this free concert packed with fun for the whole family. For families who choose to enjoy the holiday outdoors, GTMF and the Teton Village Association collaborate to share the audio throughout the Teton Village commons. | FREE, BUT TICKETED

INSIDE THE MUSIC

FREE FAMILY CONCERTS

Engaging hosts share intriguing stories that provide context and insight to works performed around a theme. The evenings are moderated and performed by members of the Festival Orchestra. Listen and learn about the background of classical music’s most influential pieces and players. GALLERY CONCERTS Enjoy chamber music while immersed in art. In these one-hour concerts, visiting artists and Festival Musicians play in one of Jackson Hole’s exquisite fine art galleries. Tickets are limited, providing a unique setting in which to enjoy worldclass music. | TICKETS $30

ON-STAGE SPECIAL EVENTS The Grand Teton Music Festival often features concerts with stage seating. Within these events, Walk Festival Hall is transformed into a smaller venue, inviting the audience to enjoy the performance from only a few feet away. | TICKETS $30
