Third Symphony

MAHLER’S

“Hearing Mahler’s symphonies for the first time, when I was a student in Edinburgh, I felt as if I could reach out and touch their sound and live in their musical landscapes. It’s a feeling that has never left me … Each of his works is a quest for truth. I believe that Mahler was seeking to convey through his music the beauty that surrounds us, the joys and tragedies of life, and the big questions that face us all.” – Donald Runnicles A foremost interpreter of Mahler, Donald Runnicles’ performances have been praised as “a thing of special beauty” which capture “that most elusive and most critical of Mahlerian moods: joy tinged with melancholy (The Cleveland Plain Dealer).” In this pair of penultimate Festival Orchestra concerts, the Maestro takes the podium for the composer’s most demanding work. Boasting a large orchestra, two choirs, and mezzo-soprano Kelley O’Connor, the symphony radiates calm introspection, jubilation, and “heavenly life.” Festival Orchestra
