Bernard de la Motte Saint-Pierre (1875–1956) was the third child of the aristocratic family of Emile and Laure Gabrielle de la Motte Saint-Pierre. He was born at Montpoupon, the family château, in Céré-la-Ronde in the Loire Valley. Monsieur Bernard de la Motte Saint-Pierre is credited with modernizing the château and expanding its role in hosting an annual hunt. The grounds and the château have been the foci of stag hunting since the time of King François I (1494–1547), who was a frequent visitor.

During the 1880s, the American expatriate painters George Hitchcock and Geri Melchers established an artists’ colony in Egmondaan-Zee on the Dutch coast. Hitchcock settled in the Schuylenburg house and painted the local people going about their daily lives. Rouault

The French artist GEORGES ROUAULT is most closely identified with Fauvism and Expressionism. His friendships with Matisse, Albert Marquet, and Henri Camoin heavily influenced Rouault’s Fauvist style, while Rouault’s identification with socially-conscious art and the artist Van Gogh contributed to the artist’s choice of subject matter and his use of heavy, black contouring and strong contrasts. Unlike Picasso and Toulouse-Lautrec, who portrayed these individuals with pathos, Rouault’s approach was unapologetic and raw. In the present work several layers of pigment can be discerned, with the build-up of translucent and opaque paints creating a three-dimensionality that characterizes the artist’s strongest work. Furthermore, the work is highlighted by the deep swaths of black ink delineating the subject, representing a signature element of Rouault’s portraiture of this period.

UPCYCLING The innovative artist Doug Powell creates the illusion of three-dimensional form through the use and arrangement of recycled, or upcycled, computer keyboard keys. Upcycling has a positive environmental impact due to the reuse and re-purposing of manufactured objects. The reuse of materials has been employed by artists throughout history from Amish quilters and American folk artists to Modern Masters, such as Picasso, Joseph Cornell, and Robert Rauschenberg, all of whom have reused materials or found objects to create new, more complex works of art.
