The Post-Impressionist painter Albert André was a close friend and student of Renoir--he was the first biographer of Renoir. The elder Impressionist artist admired André’s work and provided mentoring for the artist’s career. André became an accomplished and important Post-Impressionist painter who exhibited frequently during his lifetime at all of the important venues of modern art. Albert André’s works are found at major museums worldwide: Musée d’Orsay; Metropolitan Museum; Art Institute of Chicago; Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza; Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; National Museum of Western Art, Tokyo.

Ophelia Ewerbeck’s work, Ophelia, was inspired by his exposure to the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, a school formed by a group of young English artists in 1848 that was at its height during the years Ewerbeck spent in England. The Pre-Raphaelites created an entirely new style of painting that reflected the romance of medieval chivalry while documenting Victorian social themes. Ophelia was a favorite subject for the Pre-Raphaelites who often depicted literary characters from Shakespeare, as well as from the works of Yeats and Keats. Ewerbeck depicted the comely Ophelia from Shakespeare’s Hamlet in a style lovely in its precision, realism and thematic content.

Kyu-Hak Lee is a contemporary South Korean artist specializing in mixed-media mosaic. His unique and signature method of creation involves wrapping pieces of Styrofoam—the most exemplar material of modernity for Lee—with strips of magazine, newsprint, or traditional Korean hanji paper. Lee arrived at his mixed-media technique while exploring the strong and expressive brushstrokes found in the work of Van Gogh, with Lee’s tightly-wound mosaic pieces meant to simulate the bravura brushwork of the famous Post-Impressionist. Each one of the artist’s works contain between 25,000 and 30,000 individually cut, shaped, and wrapped pieces.
