CAR CARE TIPS Is Your Engine Rough? Maybe It’s Time For A Tune Up by: Matt Ban

Every year, Americans spends thousands of dollars repairing their vehicle. This includes maintenance and basic tune up. However, many have refuse or neglect to take care of their car. Some people think they only need to take their care for service when there is a problem. But the problem here is that those “problems” may be big problem. So, are you one of those Americans? Maybe it’s time for a tune up.

In addition to our quality upholstery and window treatments, we also make custom cushions for patio furniture in fabrics of your choosing, including Sunbrella. Call 765-2169 now to get in our spring & summer calendar.

The question here is, is your engine running rough? I’m sure many of you guys do not know why or how your engine is running the way it is. Let’s examine here for a bit shall we? When was the last time you brought your car in for a basic oil change? I hope no more than 3,000 miles or 3 month. If that’s the case, it’s time for an oil change. Now, the importance here is, how many miles do you have on your car? If your vehicle is over 100,000 miles, maybe it’s time to switch the regular oil to synthetic oil. After all, synthetic oil adds that extra protection for your car. The next question is, when was the last time you changed your air filter and spark plug? I’m sure it has been a while. Many people do not know that air filter must be changed every 10,000 miles on average. And spark plugs needs to be changed at least every 50,000 to keep engine running in optimum condition. Now, are you one of those people who did not know this? Now in days, a lot of cars use sensors. Sensor purpose is to monitor your engine’s condition and to keep it running efficient. Some sensor are importance to check periodically. For example on a vehicle, the MAF which is mass air flow and IACV the idle air control valve can make your engine run rough. Both monitor the air to adjust the air/fuel ratio on your vehicle. The mass air flow sensor should be cleaned once every 20,000 miles or so and IACV should be cleaned every 60,000 miles or so to keep them both running in optimum condition. Neighbors Next Door

Steve Bub / High-Flying Electrician It was a few years ago, and Bethlehem electrician Steve Bub was working on a job in a local residence. One of the women who owned the house approached him, wanting to show him something. She had a manilla envelope with a few old papers tucked inside. The woman, in her seventies, had a proposal, a bill and a receipt in the envelope. She presented him paperwork from his own grandfather, for work he had performed nearly one hundred years ago. It turns out that her grandfather had hired Steve’s grandfather to wire his house with electricity - the very house she still lived in. And they had kept the bill. The date on the papers was 1914. The grand total for completely wiring a house back in the day? $50.14. Immediately, Steve realized how special these papers were. Each were written in his grandfather’s hand, with the name of his business across the top: LeGallez Electric. It’s the oldest surviving business in the Bethlehem area. Steve asked for the papers, and the woman kindly handed them over. He had each matted and framed, and presented them to his father Bill on Christmas morning. But it was Steve’s mother, Lois, who burst into tears when she saw them. It was, after all, her father’s handwriting. She hadn’t seen his signature in many, many years and those precious papers ended up being sentimental to the whole family. Today, he still runs the family company his father did for nearly 40 years. His grandfather, Clayton LeGallez, started LeGallez electric sometime before 1914, in Slingerlands. There’s an old photo of Clayton standing beside a 1930 REO Speedwagon, the car he drove for business. It’s parked in front of the LeGallez house - a home that still stands in Slingerlands, across from the post office.

came right back to Maureen, the girl he met in ninth grade at Bethlehem High, and settled in to work with his father. He is content with this job, as much now as he was then. Reflecting on it, he says, “Besides a paper route, it’s the only job I’ve ever had in my whole life.” Maureen became his wife and they’ve been married for 31 years. She works for the business too, doing all of the accounting and finances. The two have five children, between the ages of 18 and 27. The tradition continues now in the third generation, with a company run entirely by one family. Will the fourth generation carry on? Steve doesn’t know. And he isn’t putting any pressure on them, either. For now, he is content, and wants his children to follow their own paths. Listening to him talk about his family business, the great pride is evident. But then, there’s the spark and the smile. The joy that comes from something he doesn’t do at work. It all started about eleven years ago when he was visiting his brother David in Westerlo. They heard a very loud noise in the sky. Running out to see what it was, they saw a small airplane, looping and buzzing about. Intrigued, they followed the plane. Of course, it lead to the airport, where they watched the model airplane freely turning and spiraling. The operator, obviously skilled at the art of flying model planes, made this one swoop

“I haven’t seen a grown man cry. But plenty of them have thrown things.”

and fly with ease. It landed smoothly on the tarmac, took off again only to loop and turn in the sky. He watched, transfixed. “I have to have one,” was all he said to his brother. Since that day in 2000, Steve has had his share of planes. He’s owned over 30, and half of those now are in the trash. This is told to me with a hearty laugh. I ask if he’s ever seen a grown man cry over a broken airplane. “I haven’t seen a grown man cry. But plenty of them have thrown things.” Another laugh follows the last. He spends much of his free time with the Flying Knights, a local club for model plane enthusiasts. The thing with model planes, is that there are crashes. Lots and lots of crashes. The generally accepted motto for people who fly these planes is, “Take-offs are optional. Landings are mandatory.” This is said with the laugh of someone who has had many landings. And possibly, all of them not as graceful and fluid as the plane he watched that day in Westerlo all those years ago. Steve’s first plane was a trainer, a high-winged plane. These Steve Bub grew up in Bethlehem, and graduated from planes, with the wings above the fuselage, are very forgiving. Bethlehem High School. He went on to Canton Agriculture He started with a person who taught him to fly the plane, and Technical, and became certified as an electrician. He actually had control of the plane with a remote attached to his 13

own. It’s called a “Buddy Box”, and it’s the best way to learn to fly model planes. Slowly, he got the hang of it. Enough so that he wanted another airplane. He bought a Spitfire, a model from the British Air Corps. Why? When he was 16, he bought and rebuilt a Triumph Spitfire automobile. Steve still owns both the plane and car. Quickly, he learned that part of the model airplane experience is crashing. Once he became proficient, he went out to fly and tried not to crash. But crashing is part of the experience. “Planes are broken. You either put it in the trash, or you try and glue it back together,” he told me, with the look of someone who has done both many times. But all of this is told without frustration. It’s a hobby, after all, and at the end of the day, it brings him much happiness.

When asked about his best and favorite model airplane story, his enthusiasm shines. Steve once spent over two years building a plane. This plane was built as an exact replica of the Klein Tools plane. He spent many hours getting the plane, paint and logo just right. Eventually, he had the opportunity to meet the man who flew the Klein Tools plane and take a ride in his plane. The pilot was equally excited to see the model, which he had only heard about. Pictures show the planes together, one large and the other a miniature mirror image, together. Both men were impressed and in awe of the other’s plane. Steve was given that ride, one that he calls “the ride of my life.” The Klein Tools pilot showed him a good time, flying inverted more than right side up. He reflects wistfully on that afternoon, saying that, “Klein Tools pulled sponsorship of the plane. But I still have my plane. And I still have the memories.” Now many years - and planes - later, Steve is still building. He’s waiting for the warm weather, when all the flyers are out in the grassy fields, remote controls in hand, turning loops, and trying their best not to crash.

Assisted s ’ Living ior er n e S orn Services are C Tax Deductible April conjures up the welcoming feelings of spring and the anticipation of warmer weather, blooming flowers and sunny days. Unfortunately, it is also a time when we are scurrying to prepare our income taxes for submission. As the tax codes become more complicated and the amount of deductions allowed decrease, there is still some good news for seniors who may have been considering making a change to assisted living. Residents, family members or others who pay for an individual’s care in an assisted living community can, in most cases, file the entire monthly cost of assisted living as a tax deductible medical expense. Under HIPAA, expenses can be tax-deductible if such services are provided pursuant to a plan of care prescribed by a licensed health care practitioner, and the personal care services are required by a person who: * is unable to perform at least two activities of daily living (such as cooking and/or medication management) *has severe cognitive impairment and requires supervision to protect self and others from health and safety threats. (Note that the IRS considers Alzheimer’s a severe cognitive impairment, and is therefore fully tax deductible as a medical expense). Deductions for medical expenses may be claimed whenever the total cost of these expenses exceeds 7.5% of your adjusted gross income for the year. These deductions apply to the cost of diagnosis, cure, mitigation, treatment or prevention of disease, and the cost for treatments affecting any part or function of the body,

20 APRIL 2011

as well as, the alleviation or prevention of a physical or mental defect or illness. There are many items that can be included in your deductions. This article is not intended to give tax advice. For more information on how to claim your medical expenses, possibly your assisted living costs on your taxes, please consult a personal tax advisor, tax preparer or the IRS. The good news is…there is another practical reason to consider an assisted living community. If you are at home perhaps feeling lonely, or struggling to manage some of your daily living skills like cooking, cleaning or managing your medications, BUT want to remain as independent as possible, call your local assisted living community for more information. A great community can help you to remain active, socially engaged and enjoying life without worrying about the minor details. So get out and smell the spring flowers, take in a show, visit with friends or read a good book, because someone else will take out the trash and have dinner ready when you return! This article was submitted by Kristin Vivian of Delmar Place Assisted Living, 467 Delaware Ave, Delmar. Now is a great time to tour and take advantage of our all-inclusive rates with no hidden costs! A: An ounce of prevention may be worth a pound of cure and when it comes to your pet’s health, practicing good dental hygiene may make a significant difference. In fact, an animal’s teeth may be more important to its overall health than most pet owners realize. Overall dental health can be an indicator of current or future health challenges for humans and pets. Taking care of your pet’s mouth and keeping it nice and healthy helps an animal live longer. Preventive dental care includes regularly brushing your pet’s teeth and getting an oral evaluation and dental cleaning as needed by your veterinarian. Many pet owners question the importance of dental health maintenance for pets based on their own experience with childhood pets but veterinary medicine has come a long way over the past 20 years. In the past, most of our pets died at younger ages, so periodontal disease did not have a chance to impact their health and cause damage to their kidneys, livers or other vital organs. Periodontal disease starts off as a bacterial growth on the surface of the tooth which leads to inflammation of the gums and can eventually channel to fatal disease. Approximately 65-80 percent of dogs have periodontal disease before they are 3 to 4 years old. Veterinary medicine has advanced such that we are now better able to treat these diseases and our animals are living longer, healthier lives. Dental therapy for pets includes many of the same procedures that help humans maintain healthy teeth, gums and mouths. Available treatments include oral surgery, periodontics, endodontics, restorations and even orthodontics on animal patients.

It is important that pet owners are aware of the serious consequences of ignoring their pet’s dental health. Without preventative dental care other health complications may follow. Teeth, gum or mouth problems can cause infections and disease or they can be symptoms of serious illness in veterinary patients. More and more pet owners are recognizing the connection between healthy teeth and their animal’s overall wellbeing. When you make a dental appointment for yourself, it might also be a good idea to make a veterinary appointment to have your dog or cat’s teeth cleaned and checked. A letter from Bethlehem Town Hall Over the past fifteen months I have reported to the residents and business persons of Bethlehem on my hopes and vision for our Town’s future, the importance of the process of government, budget issues, the extensive services received for the Bethlehem tax dollar; the progress of our many volunteer based committees, economic development, planning and a number of other areas. This month I believe it is important to provide some perspective on achievements and problems that have been addressed. Achievements and problems are often just opposite sides of the same coin. Your town government’s job is to, as best it can, anticipate problems and solve them in the best interests of the Bethlehem community. And, sometimes in life, as well as on the job, things happen and then the question is how should you react. Then too, sometimes the problems and solutions are subtle rather than clear. But you can be sure that they exist whenever elected officials and staff go about doing its job to serve the people. Consider the following: CREATION OF A TOWN OF BETHLEHEM BOARD OF AMBULANCE COMMISSIONERS: Issue/Problem: For years there has been a definite need to provide Town government oversight to the two Ambulance Departments in Town: the Delmar Ambulance Department and the Bethlehem Ambulance Department. Most people are probably not aware that ambulance services in our Town are a Town government responsibility. And now, with the increased complexity of medical care options, contracts, financing, rising costs of care, dependency on a primarily voluntary service, and the logistics of having two ambulance departments, action was necessary. SOLUTION: On March 23, 2011 the Town Board approved a Town Law creating a Volunteer Board of Ambulance Commissioners that would report to the Town Board and have responsibility for making recommendations related to financial improvements, contracts, approaches to top quality ambulance care and the consistent delivery of ambulance care for the entire Town of Bethlehem. Our next step is to post notices for these volunteer positions and appoint individuals with the appropriate expertise and professionalism. (We understand that other communities are now considering the model we created.)

VISTA TECHNOLOGY CAMPUS: Issue/Problem: For seven years, this major new Bethlehem Central School District and Town revenue and job generating source, encompassing 428 acres and 1.4 million square feet of buildable space, did not advance due to the slowed down economy and, perhaps, other factors. This is a tremendous economic development project for the Town of Bethlehem and at build out will generate millions of dollars in new revenue for the Bethlehem School District and the Bethlehem community. SOLUTION: Through the persistent and creative diligence 30 APRIL 2011

of the Town, the Bethlehem Industrial Development Agency (BIDA) and the developer, significant progress is now being made. A creative financing mechanism for road, sewer and water infrastructure is being advanced, building projects have now been submitted to the Planning Board, and applications have been submitted to the BIDA for consideration. With a continuing effort and a little luck, road construction and vertical building construction will begin together this Spring. NO SMOKING ZONE IN BETHLEHEM TOWN PARKS: Issue/ Problem: The negative health impact of passive smoke on people, and particularly young people, has now been well documented, yet, except for Elm Avenue Pool areas’, smoking was permitted at Bethlehem Town Parks and Recreation field, pavilion and playground facilities. SOLUTION: The Town Board adopted a resolution on March 9, 2011 that prohibits smoking on Town Parks and Recreation facilities, except for the Colonial Acres Golf Course. There will be no additional expenses for the Town, no smoking signs are being provided by the Capital District Tobacco-Free Coalition, and experiences of other communities have indicated that the program works and is self-enforcing. Sometimes, the most subtle changes in policy, like the adoption of a No-Smoking Zone in Bethlehem town Parks, are the ones most important to do and the ones that can have a lasting and positive impact on a community. THE PARAPET WALL COLLAPSE AT TOWN HALL: Issue/ Problem: Going back to April 28, 2010, and even before that, it was recognized that work needed to be done on the parapet wall at the roof line at Town Hall. Regular inspection of the wall did not uncover any advancing deterioration or change in the wall. Unfortunately, the wall collapsed on March 1, 2011, damaging four cars parked against the building. We know that this has also created inconveniences for the owners of the cars. No one could have anticipated this occurrence, and the most important thing is that no one was injured. SOLUTION: The Town Board and staff moved forward quickly to authorize emergency action, financing, request-for-proposals and contracting to perform the necessary repair work. It is possible that this work could have begun before the autumn of 2010 rainy season, but it did not. Fall and Winter weather were not acceptable for parapet repair. Therefore, the work was to begin in the Spring of 2011. Unfortunately, the wall came down before the work commenced. I am proud of the attention and care everyone at Town Hall gave to the four persons who had their cars damaged from the moment the incident occurred, up to the present time when we are still working with the insurance company to try to do the best we can for vehicle replacement or repair coverage. This reality is that in public service we are always dealing with issues and problems – and seeking solutions. We try to anticipate as best we can and act early. As we move forward, we use what we’ve learned, and strive to do better tomorrow. Sincerely,

Sam Messina Supervisor Sam Messina

Health Matters Foam Rolling for Soft Tissue Health I’m a firm believer in the benefit and importance of receiving regular bodywork (therapuetic massage or PT) regardless of how active you are. I’m willing to bet that at least once, you’ve had a tight, painful spot in a muscle. Activity, inactivity and injury can all result in what are commonly called knots, hot spots or trigger points. Even inactivity can result in tight muscles (not the good kind of tightness!). Exercise can cause microscopic tears in muscle fibers - a good thing. When the fibers heal, the muscle becomes larger or more dense. When a muscle is injured, it also increases in density as it attempts to heal. These knots or trigger points often restrict our joints’ range of motion and if they aren’t treated, this can result in pain and sometimes even more injury. Bodywork or massage therapy using techniques like ART (Active Release Technique), MAT (Muscle Activation Technique), and other methods of releasing tight spots in muscle (and soft) tissue can provide relief and prepare it for stretching. Daily deep tissue work isn’t recommended by most therapists (unless you’re a professional athlete), but daily stretching and soft tissue work can be beneficial to almost anyone. Enter foam rollers. Sometimes called the poor man’s massage, foam roller use can achieve the same changes in soft tissue density and relief from tightness. Foam rollers are made of either a highdensity (hard) or a softer, less dense extruded hard cell foam. They come in 1 and 3 ft. length cylinders, and also in half rounds as well. I’ve found the latter more useful for balance exercises than rolling. When choosing a roller, large people usually do well with the higher density, smaller and/or older individuals do well with the softer versions. The technique is pretty simple and should take only about 5-10 minutes. Ideally, you would foam roll prior to exercise, stretch, and repeat following exercise. Put the roller on the floor, and lie or sit on it. Roll back and forth in a slow sweeping motion over tight or painful areas for a couple of minutes. When you notice a knot or trigger point, pause and apply a little extra pressure to that area until you notice the tightness and/or pain decrease. Do not roll over bony areas. Typically tight areas are gluteus maximus and medius (buttocks/ hips), adductors (inner thighs), Iiotibial Bands (long thin, flat muscle that runs along the outside of the thigh), Psoas (hip flexors), hamstrings, as well as upper body muscles (pecs, lats, and neck extensors). Foam rollers can be used for balance and core strengthening exercises too. There is no substitute for the work of a skilled massage therapist, but since most of us cannot afford daily massages, foam rollers are a great alternative. For an investment of around $20.00 (www. performbetter.com or http://www.foam-roller.com/), you can relieve muscle tightness and prevent injury in a matter of a few minutes per day. Both websites contain instructions for rolling as well.

40 APRIL 2011

Spring salutations my dear “reader” friends… As I write this column…it is currently snowing in blizzard like fashion. Yesterday, there were dozens of birds frolicking on my lawn as I cleaned off my Adirondack chair and set it near my bird feeders. The sun was shining, Seamus was rolling in the grass, and I was preparing my chair for outside with thoughts of settling in with a glass of ice tea and a good book very soon. This morning the snow and sleet blew sideways down the street as winter pushed in and snatched the thoughts of Spring away. The calendar reaffirms that Spring is here…but for now…my pleasure reading will have to be inside. Hopefully, by the time you read this April will be here with daffodils, pussy willows and green buds aglow on the tips of branches. Finding time to read for pleasure is often a matter of scheduling and priority. In this high tech world of texting, instant messages, cell phones, and e-mails, or within one’s work day, reading may be an integral part of the day’s work, leaving little time to read for pleasure. The desire may be there, but less time is available. Do you find time during your day to squeeze in a chapter or two… perhaps on lunch break? Or, are you one who stays awake long past midnight reading just one more chapter? Bookshop friend, Elisa, recently discovered Laurell K. Hamilton’s “Anita Blake” paranormal novels, planning to read the series cover to cover. She has had to force herself to close the book, turn off the light and go to bed. Recently, another bookshop friend, Linda filled her arms with children’s “cat-themed” books to take with her for her visit down south to see her four year old grandson. She picked a new book for every night’s bedtime story! What a great shared experience ahead for both of them! Time well spent! Did you happen to receive an “e-book” this past Holiday Season? I have heard pros and cons of this acquisition from many of my regular bookshop friends in past weeks. I love technology…and if my life consisted of long commutes on trains/planes or carpools, perhaps I would consider an e-reader. When I was a Principal I had a PDA, with articles on it. It was difficult to read (I could read down a page on my Palm Pilot almost as fast as it took to turn the page!) so not for me. However, I use the computer to read my news electronically (newspaper ink makes me itch…sorry). A recent customer came in and purchased a half-dozen paperback romances telling me that her kids had bought her an e-reader for her birthday with a few books downloaded on it. Thoughtful as they were, she said they didn’t “get” that the books that she likes to read are not readily available for downloading (Constance O’Banyon romances) and for the cost of one electronic book she could get 2-3 books here! She

shared that she didn’t like holding the “reader”, and was bothered by glare. Last summer while reading (The Help by Kathryn Stockett) at the Town Pool, it started to rain. I moved under the tree to continue reading while a fellow reader had to put a towel over his head and Kindle to continue reading. I told him that “mine didn’t mind getting wet”…he laughed. I did get a kick out of scene in “Modern Family” when the grandchild hops up in the seat next to his grandpa and sits upon and smashes his beloved electronic reader. Having discussed the pros and cons of the e-book recently with several customers when they ask my feelings about the impact that it may have on the future of books, I have compiled some personal thoughts for you to ponder regarding the advantages of paper books…biased…but hey, I run a used bookstore! The classic “paper book” offers multiple advantages: • They’re easily obtainable…with 18,000 titles in our inventory thousands of books not offered for download. • They’re easily portable…fit in your pocket… pocketbook…bookbag easily. • They don’t normally cause significant eye-strain… come in a variety of sizes paperback…trade… hardcover. • They’re cheap 25-60% cheaper than electronic book downloads. At Tattered Pages all books are marked 20-60% off publishers’ prices…with trade credits you receive another 30% off! • They’re recyclable…the same book can go from reader to reader. This is conscientious recycling! • Paper books don’t need power to function. E-books have batteries that will eventually wear out. One consumer told me that you can’t at this time replace e-book batteries. • Paper books can be read anywhere with sufficient light • No software to upgrade or deal with • Though they don’t like being soaked…can take a spritzing of rain, light beverage spill, heat, humidity and sea air. • They handle being dropped, stepped on…sat on. • The pricing model for e-books hasn’t been resolved yet with many publishing houses and authors. For many on a budget, this is an important factor. Also, I want to remind you that you can always call me to see if we have a book in our inventory…save your gas money and check with me first! If I have the book I will hold it for you until you can come and get it. We want to help save you time and gas…though we prefer having our customers come and browse, visit, sit a spell and of course meet the cutest greeter dog around, Seamus. My last books read: The 19th Wife by David Ebershoff a very differently formatted book that blends the memoir of Ann Eliza Young (the 19th wife of Brigham Young) and the fictional murder of a modern day polygamist possibly by his 19th wife. The unexpectedly honest, Prairie Tale: A Memoir, by Melissa Gilbert who played Laura on Little House on the Prairie is an uplifting

tale of an imperfect life of a child star. In closing, these are our April Specials which are reduced an additional 10% off our already reduced prices: All books from our Religion/Inspirational section, Faye and Jonathan Kellerman mysteries, Belva Plain fiction and Sandra Brown romance. Check us out on our website: www.tatteredpages365.webs.com Also, I’d be glad to help you pick out a children’s book for your child’s Easter Basket or Spring reading. Until next month….may you have fun between the pages of a good book!

FINANCIAL FOCU$ “Stress Busters” for the Sandwich Generation You may be too busy to realize it, but April is Stress Awareness Month. Sponsored by the Health Resource Network, a nonprofit health education group, Stress Awareness Month is designed to promote awareness about ways to reduce stress in our lives. And if you’re a member of the so-called “Sandwich Generation,” you may well have plenty of stress to deal with — especially financial stress. And that’s why you may want to look at this month as an opportunity to explore ways of “destressing” yourself. To understand the scope of the problem facing people in your situation, consider this: One out of every eight Americans aged 40 to 60 is raising a child while caring for an aging parent, according to the Pew Research Center. The definition of “eldercare” can range from having the parent living in one’s home to helping pay for the parent’s stay in an assisted living or nursing home facility. When you consider the costs involved in this type of care, added to the expenses of raising your children and possibly even providing some financial support to them as young adults, it’s easy to see how you could potentially face enormous strains, both emotionally and financially.

health insurance, such as Medigap. Plus, you need to find out if your parents have created a power of attorney or health care directive. It’s best to have these conversations sooner rather than later. Delegate. You eventually may have to take some responsibility for your parents’ care — but you don’t have to do it alone. You could, for example, work with a financial services provider that offers trust services, which can be invaluable if your parents are incapacitated and useful even if they aren’t. A professional trust officer can, among other duties, help manage your parents’ investments, pay their bills, keep their records and supervise distribution of their assets to beneficiaries. In short, a qualified trust officer can make life a lot easier for you. Stress Awareness Month lasts only 30 days, but by taking the right steps, you can de-stress yourself for many years to come. After all, just because you’re in the Sandwich Generation, it doesn’t mean you have to be “squished.”

This article was written by Edward Jones for use by your local Edward Jones Financial Advisor. Edward Jones, its employees and Financial Advisors do not offer tax or legal advice.

To help ease this burden, consider these suggestions: Save. As a Sandwich Generation member, you’re probably within shouting distance of your own retirement — so you need to save for it. This may not be easy. You don’t know how much financial support you may someday have to provide your elderly parents — and even after your children are grown, they may need some help from you. Unfortunately, in helping these “boomerang” children, many people disrupt their day-to-day cash flow and raid their savings. That’s why it’s important to try to “pay yourself first” by deferring part of each paycheck into a 401(k) and by automatically moving money each month from your checking or savings account into an IRA.

Talk. Many people in the “Greatest Generation” (over age 80) have not even prepared a will. If your parents are in that group, you may want to talk to them about taking action. Also, find out who, if anyone, is handling their investments. And ask if your parents understand how Medicare works and if they need to add supplemental 45

Mary Rea Mary Rea

It was Sunday afternoon around 3pm. My doorbell rang. I opened the door to greet familiar and smiling faces. I had invited some of my family over to dinner. After exchanging hugs and kisses, we sat down in the living room, enjoying the glowing fireplace. Our conversation quickly turned to talking about Japan’s recent catastrophe. How does one begin to search through what looks like the end of the world? That’s the question I asked myself while watching CNN’s coverage of the devastating earthquake and tsunami that rocked Japan. Perhaps one of the most touching moments for me was watching people walking through the rubble all that remains of their towns, searching for their loved ones. Many parents had the pressing thought of finding and rescuing their children from the crumbled earth and huge waves. I can’t begin to imagine the pain one feels when a loved one is found dead or never found at all. How does one find the strength to rebuild from this type of disaster? Where do you begin? These are some of the tough questions I asked myself while watching people’s lives being torn apart. I was lucky; I was watching the TV coverage from the comfort of my living room couch in a warm home.

food. During dinner, my mom told me to eat more vegetables…..but you know what…..it meant my mom was still with me. It reminded me of her caring ways back when I was a child. Sunday evening I had to clean up after everyone left but you know what…..it meant earlier I had a delightful visit with my family. How fortunate I am to have had the opportunity to spend time with my family. Sunday evening I felt so loved, safe and secure while thousands of people in Japan were struggling with tremendous losses, and threats of radiation. I’ve heard there are 7 wonders of the world. That night I went to bed realizing that having my home and my family safe and sound was the 8th wonder of the world! Talk to you soon.

We all agreed that life isn’t fair. We all want answers when tragedies happen but sometimes the what, who and why are hard to find. I closed my eyes and thought how lucky I was to be sitting in a warm home surrounded by family with delicious foods on the table. And although Thanksgiving is traditionally celebrated in November, I thought this might be a perfect time to give thanks for all the good, everyday things I have in my life that some of the Japanese people lost in an instant. Watching them struggling to survive with the loss of possessions and loved ones made me realize that I should complain less and appreciate more. I thought to myself………… I may have a little indigestion from over eating this afternoon, but you know what ……this meant I had food on my plate! The kids were playing music I didn’t really like, but you know what….this meant they’re alive and having fun and my hearing works well! Earlier this week, I had to wait in line for what seemed forever to buy groceries ……. but this meant we had a place to find food! I’m lucky to have a supermarket just down the street with shelves stocked with all varieties of 46 APRIL 2011

NELSON DENTAL HEALTHCARE

TOOTH TIPS BY NELSON DENTAL HEALTHCARE

What Does the Tooth Fairy Do With All the Teeth? The teeth are used like bricks and toothpaste is used like mortar for my Tooth Fairy castle. Tooth paste is easy to buy at the store so I am able to run down to the store and get it when I need it. But children’s teeth are much more difficult to find, so I collect them as a child looses them. Therefore when I start a new contraption, building, or appliance in or around my castle I have a large collection of teeth to choose from. I have been collecting teeth for quite a while now. I have finished my own living quarters quite long ago, so now I am working on homes for my helpers and their families. The Fairy population has been growing at a fast rate and to keep up the building for all the fairies to live takes many teeth from many children. You never know what your baby teeth may be used for. I may have made my new dishes out of them, or a new bed, or even my own tooth brush. But what ever your teeth have been used for they are helping the fairy community thrive and for that we thank you.

How do I dispose of unwanted medications?

Submitted By: Four Corners Pharmacy Christi Kearns, Doctor of Pharmacy Candidate 2010 Paul B. Pagnotta, R.Ph., Pharmacist and Co-Owner

How do I dispose of those unwanted medications? Flushing medications or putting them down the drain is not recommended for medication disposal as medications have been found in waterways and municipal water supplies around the country. How do I dispose of my unused medications? The first line for disposal of any medication, even those on the list, is to drop them off at a medication collection day event. To find out when and where these events will take place one can call the local health department or check the Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC). These events are organized in a way that the pharmacies or other agencies contract with companies to properly destroy the medications. This may include incineration which can be converted into energy. Medication collection events are considered the most environmentally friendly or “green” way to dispose of unused medications. What if a medication collection event is not available to me? If there is not an event there are other options, don’t not flush the medication (unless it is a medication on the list below). Flushing medications puts them directly into local water sources, as the treatment facilities are unable to eliminate the drugs before they reach the water sources. Therefore, although not a perfect option, discarding medications in the regular trash would be the next option. It will take longer for the medications to be absorbed into the earth through trash than it would through flushing. Medications should not however be directly thrown into the trash. Steps should be taken to first protect your privacy, and then ensure the medications cannot be recaptured. To protect your privacy, labels that contain your personal information should be removed and shredded. After labels are removed each dosage form (i.e. tablet, capsule, liquid, patch, etc.) should be disposed of as follows:

Tablets/Capsules: Dissolve in water with kitty litter, coffee grounds, or dirt so that medications cannot be extracted. Place in a zip-loc bag and place in trash. Liquids: Mix with kitty litter, coffee grounds, or dirt. Dilute with water then pour down the drain if the quantity is too great to mix with the items listed above. Insulin: Draw up the expired/unused insulin in a syringe and then proceed with the same steps for tablets and capsules. Empty the content of the syringe into kitty litter, coffee grounds, or dirt. Then be sure to place the syringe in a sharps container to be properly disposed of. Patches: Fentanyl Patches: fold so adhesive sides stick together then flush down the toilet. Nicotine or Estrogen patches: Fold so that adhesive sides stick together and place in trash. Sharps: -Local hospitals or your trash collection company. -Albany Medical Center: Saturdays 9am – 1pm. Follow the blue and white signs to the collection area. -St. Peter’s Hospital: Entrance opposite of Rite Aid there is a sharps container that although it is outside, one must still park and get out of their car to access. -Contact your trash collection company to see if they have a policy in which they will take your sharps. Inhalers/Nasal Spray: Place in trash The FDA has a list of medications in which the dangers of having them in the home or trash where they can be recaptured by persons other than whom which it was prescribed are greater than the dangers of flushing. The list is as follows:

*These medicines have generic versions available or are only available in generic formulations.

There is nothing worse than planning a relaxing day out of the heat and suddenly your air conditioner doesn’t seem to work properly. Unfortunately this happens quite frequently. A dirty air filter can reduce your equipment’s efficiency by as much as 20%. It may even result in mechanical damage that will require expensive repairs. The dirt accumulated in your air filter slows down the flow of air. This forces your system to work harder in order to keep you cool or warm. Studies show that systems with lack of periodic maintenance and filter changes will fail and need to be repaired or replaced up to 3 times more frequently than a properly maintained system. How often should I change my filter? You should check your filter at least every month, though you probably won’t need to replace it as frequently. For instance, filters have to be replaced less often in the winter, when a snow covering on the ground keeps dust from getting into the air. Also the more efficient a filter is the more pollution it will trap and the more often it will have to be replaced. Air filters not only screen out debris and unwanted pollens from your heating and cooling system, they increase its productivity. Fresh replacements will prolong the lifespan of your system and reduce your utility bills.

years and unfortunately dust and pet hair will pass right through them. Usually the air conditioning coil above your furnace will get so coated that the system won’t cool at all. If you’ve changed your filter and you’re a/c is still not cooling, contact your certified HVAC contractor immediately. They can complete a thorough maintenance and you can have them install a high capacity filter media system so this problem does not occur again. Another problem could be that this is an indication that air is passing through gaps in your ductwork as it returns to your furnace. Needless to say, this means your HVAC system is not running efficiently ($$$) and not cleaning the air as it should be. Contact you certified HVAC contractor and they can seal your ductwork with a thermal mastic that will make your system run better, save you money, and make your living area healthier.

Are filters rated? What does MERV mean? What are these really wide filters I see? It seems that dirty air is here to stay! In fact the EPA has stated that indoor air is two to five times more polluted than outdoor air. But in spite of all the statistics there is something you can do about it! You can filter the air and make it better! However, all air filters are not created equal and the one you choose must be right for the job. An HVAC filter’s efficiency is rated according to its ability to trap air pollution. MERV stands for Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value. The higher the MERV number is, the more efficient (and probably more expensive) the filter. The cheapest filters are so inefficient that most manufacturers advise against them. These are the filters that rarely appear to be in need of replacing because they trap little pollution. The wide filters are called Medias and are the best way to protect your home, family and equipment. They will have the highest MERV rating and usually will last up to a year due to their capacity. These are very convenient because they can be changed by a technician during a routine maintenance so you do not have to worry about poor filtration hurting your family or your equipment. In summary; just like changing the oil in your car, your HVAC air filter requires changing on a regular basis. I simply cannot stress enough the importance of this required maintenance in order to prolong the efficiency and productivity of your system.
