Bethlehem Historical Association

APRIL 18th, 2013 The Bethlehem Historical Association program for April 18, 2013 is presented by Matthew J. Kirk. He will speak about Captain Stewart Dean, an Albany Hero. This navigator traveled to China and back in the mid 1780’s connecting the emerging city of Albany to the outside world. But he also aided in the Revolution captaining The Beaver as a privateer in the Caribbean taking prizes and loaded cargos for the American effort. He married the daughter of Pieterje Bradt and built a home on Dock Street. In 1805 he was elected to the city council and moved to Arbor Hill but still maintained his Dock St property. There is much more about Captain Stewart Dean to reveal. Everyone is invited to come and hear about this very interesting man. There will be a short business meeting at 7:30pm. Refreshments will be served. Cedar Hill Schoolhouse at Route 144 (River Road) Selkirk, NY

It’s Not 3,000 Miles If you are one of the many people who let a windshield reminder sticker govern when they get an oil change, here’s our advice to you: Drop that habit. Instead, follow the automaker’s recommended service intervals. In many modern cars, your best bet is to rely on the vehicle’s oil life monitoring system to let you know when it’s time for a change. Let the Manual Guide You Oil change information is in the maintenance chapter of your owner’s manual. If for some reason you’ve misplaced your owner’s manual, many automakers have put their manuals online. You can also search our Edmunds Maintenance Schedules. We have an extensive maintenance database on vehicles dating back to1980.

(518)598-8848

• Written lifetime warranty on all collision repairs! • Original equipment replacement parts routinely used. • A.S.E. Certified technicians • Extensive Insurance claim experience - We handle the details for you. • FREE Pickup and Delivery of your vehicle in the Bethlehem area. • Rental Cars Available

When Should You Change Your Oil?

In many instances, you’ll find that the owner’s manual lists two service schedules. These are based on “normal” and “severe” or “special” driving conditions. Read the descriptions carefully to see which schedule reflects how you drive. In our experience, the vast majority of people fall into the normal schedule. Trust Your Oil Life Monitor In recent years, a number of automakers have installed oil life monitors of varying complexity in their vehicles. The more basic versions are more maintenance minders than actual systems. They’re based on mileage, and switch on a maintenance light when the vehicle hits a predetermined mileage range. The more advanced oil life monitors, on the other hand, constantly take information from numerous sensors throughout the vehicle and then use a complex algorithm to predict the life of your oil. Based on your driving conditions and habits, the frequency of your oil changes can vary. These systems take the guesswork out of knowing when your next service is due. Just drive as you normally would and wait until the maintenance light comes on. You’ll be surprised to see how far a vehicle can go between oil changes. The hardest part is not letting your preconceived notions of oil change intervals second-guess the monitor. It’s also important to note that these systems are calibrated to work with the factory-recommended oil. They aren’t sophisticated enough to recognize that you’ve upgraded to another blend, so save your money and stick to the factory fill. Use the Time Estimate If you have a weekend car or put very low miles on your vehicle, you’ll have to change your maintenance strategy a bit. Robert Sutherland, principal scientist at Pennzoil Passenger Car Engine Lubricants, says that over time, oil becomes contaminated by gases that blow by the pistons, and the longer the oil sits with that contamination, the more it degrades. Whether an automaker uses an oil life monitor or set mileage intervals, all of them also prescribe a maximum time frame for an oil change. For example, the 2010 Toyota Prius has a recommended oil interval of one year or 10,000 miles — whichever comes first. Since some oil life monitors are more sophisticated than others, the vehicles that employ them will have different time recommendations. You’ll also find this information in your owner’s manual.

Thank you Stram Center for using a local sign source.

Get an Oil Analysis The issue of what constitutes “normal” versus “severe” driving has long been a point of contention among vehicle owners, mechanics and dealership service departments. All have their own motivations for their recommendations. But the best way to determine how you drive your vehicle is to get your oil analyzed. An oil analysis will tell you the condition of your oil, and it also can reveal any problems that your engine may be experiencing. Some sample tests can show traces of fuel and coolant in the engine oil, which are early signs of engine problems. When you get your results back from the lab, you’ll also get a recommendation on how much further you can go between oil changes.

SIGNS ~ BANNERS ~ LETTERING GRAPHICS ~ VEHICLE WRAPS

Extended-Life Oils: It’s Safe To Switch Many oil companies are releasing extended-life oils that are guaranteed for the specific mileage listed on the bottle. Mobil’s most advanced fully synthetic product, Mobil 1 Extended Performance, for instance, is guaranteed for 15,000 miles. The company recommends it for vehicles that are beyond their warranty period. This is an important point because many automakers will void your warranty if you do not follow their recommended service intervals. By going to an extended-life product, older vehicles, such as a 1998 Ford Mustang — which calls for oil changes every 5,000 miles — could cut back from three changes per year to just one.

Then

&Now Lehmann’s Garage 1913-2013 By Susan E. Leath After 100 years, Bert Lehmann says he is “too stubborn to quit”. His Selkirk business which started as a blacksmith shop was founded by his great grandfather Jacob Albert Lehmann in 1913. Under the helm of his grandfather Albert Jacob Lehmann, the shop transitioned to auto repair in the 1920s. Bert’s building on Maple Avenue is filled with history. His modern day equipment shares space with the anvil his grandfather used to fit horseshoes. A gleaming Mustang automobile awaits work adjacent to where the horses had their shoes shod. Family lore says the schoolhouse clock ticking on the wall came from a pool hall in Ravena and was given to Jacob when the shop opened. Even the old, worn vice clamp on the scarred workbench tells a story of

generations of repair work. Jacob Albert Lehmann was born about 1861 in Germany and immigrated here when he was about 16 years old. He lived and worked in the Schodack area marrying his wife Ella Baker there. He landed at Cedar Hill working for a blacksmith. This Cedar Hill blacksmith was probably Frank Mathusa whose business included horse shoeing and general blacksmithing plus carriage, wagon and sleigh building. In 1913, Lehmann purchased a former cooper’s shop across from the railroad station in the hamlet of Selkirk and opened business for himself. His son followed with auto repair and today Bert Lehmann reports that both of his sons worked in the shop as teenagers with one going into auto body

repair, although not in his father’s shop. The cover photo (courtesy of the Bethlehem Historical Association) is from about 1930 and features “Dutch” Lehmann (Bert’s grandfather) behind the wheel of the Selkirk Fire Company’s truck. On the far right is great grandfather Jacob Albert Lehmann. You might be curious about what a cooper’s shop is. A cooper makes wooden casks or barrels. These were essential storage and shipping containers. They came in different sizes and could hold a wide variety of goods; everything from flour and wine to shoes and books. With the steamboat landing at Cedar Hill, and later the railroad freight station at Selkirk, this cooper would have been conveniently located to serve Bethlehem’s farmers. Susan E. Leath serves as the Bethlehem’s Town Historian. Susan is also the author of Bethlehem an illustrative history of our town with over 200 0 images dating from the e 1880’s to 1960. The book is available at local booksellers and at the Town Clerk’s office in Bethlehem Town Hall. She can be reached at sleath@townofbethlehem.org m org

BETHLEHEM CEMETERY 286 Kenwood Ave. (At the intersection of Elsmere Ave.)

Families asked for a place where names of loved ones could be engraved, even if they were not interred at Bethlehem Cemetery. We heard you, and this memorial will be placed in our Tribute Garden for Spring 2013 engraving. Families asked for a scattering area and a meaningful service at that place. We heard you, and we will place an in-ground scattering vessel in Spring 2013. A certified celebrant is on staff to create the perfect tribute service for your loved one.

Everyone deserves a place to be remembered. A place for special days to honor a life, also a place for every day, forever.

Families today need to be cost-conscious, and want effective planning for life's ending tribute and for permanent remembrance. We appreciate that and we can help. Our new sections are now open. Pre-need planning discounts and timepayments are available. Call our office and start the conversation.

A: April is designated Lyme disease Awareness and Prevention month. As the weather begins to improve, everyone will be getting outside more, taking walks in the woods, the park and down the street. During those walks, dogs love picking up things like sticks and leaves, but they also can pick up unwanted hitchhikers like ticks. Ticks do not fly or jump, but instead do something called “quest”. Basically, they wait around in the grass and leaves or on low brush and when something warmblooded walks by, they grab a ride. Deer ticks are the ones primarily implicated in carrying the lyme disease organism (a bacteria called Borriella borgdorfori). This particular tick is very small, especially the early life stage called a nymph, which is about the size of the head of a pin. You can imagine how difficult it would be to find something that small on a dog’s coat, even if the dog has short hair. Ticks do not stay on the dogs indefinitely. They attach to the skin using their mouthparts and stay for only a few days at most. They then drop off on their own to lay eggs. Most research indicates that the tick has to be attached for at least 24 hours and maybe as long as 48 hours to transmit lyme disease. Obviously, this means that if you do find a tick, you should remove it as soon as possible. The best way to remove a tick is to use a commercial tick remover or come to our office and we’ll remove it for you. You do not want to burn, smother it in Vaseline or squish a tick with your fingers. All of those things can actually make the tick regurgitate. The lyme bacteria is stored in the tick’s salivary system and when it regurgitates, it can inject the bacteria into the dog more readily. Once the lyme bacteria is inside the dog, it can cause a number of different problems. The most common form of lyme disease affects the joints. Affected dogs suddenly become very lame or have intermittent lameness and often have swollen joints that are painful. They often run a fever and don’t feel well. These dogs usually respond very well to antibiotics. There is also a very serious form called lyme nephritis that causes kidney failure. Unfortunately, dogs with this form often do not respond to antibiotics because the damage to the kidneys is irreversible. This form is usually fatal. To diagnose lyme disease, we have a simple blood test that is run right in the office and takes about ten minutes.

The test we use also looks for heartworm, anaplasma and ehrlichia- the last two are also tick-transmitted diseases – which appear to be on the rise in the Capital District. We recommend this test be run annually to screen dogs for exposure to lyme. Unfortunately, many dogs that get lyme nephritis never show signs of lameness, so we hope that by finding these dogs early, we can prevent them from coming down with this devastating form of the disease. We treat dogs that have lyme disease with antibiotics. If the dog is in pain, we also will usually put him on an anti-inflammatory. Dogs with lyme generally respond very quickly and feel better in 1-3 days. However, the antibiotics are continued for a month. With lyme nephritis, we have to treat the kidney failure, which involves hospitalization for IV fluids and monitoring of the blood work. Unfortunately, as was mentioned previously, many of these dogs will die even with intensive treatment. Because of the potential seriousness of lyme, it is better to prevent it than treat it. There are several things you can do to prevent lyme in your pet. Firstly, keeping ticks off will prevent lyme. Remove any ticks you find as soon as possible. Use a veterinary approved topical tick preventative. The other important way of preventing lyme is the lyme vaccine. It is very effective and very safe. You’ll notice we did not discuss cats and lyme disease. That is because not much is known about lyme in cats. There is no test or vaccine for cats. We do however know that it is not the common, potentially serious disease that it is in dogs, so cat owners can breathe a sigh of relief over this one. A letter from

Bethlehem Town Hall This month you’ll have the chance to vote on a major town government modernization proposal. On Tuesday April 30 there will be a referendum on abolishment of the elective office of Highway Superintendent with the duties being carried out by the Commissioner of Public Works. This change would allow for the consolidation of all town infrastructure functions f ti (water, ( t sewer, engineering i and roads) under an existing management position responsible to the Town Board, as well as the combination of the Highway and DPW departments, creating savings and service improvement opportunities. The initial estimate of savings is $180,000 to $375,000 annually, from consolidation efficiencies such as combined administration, better fleet management and equipment savings. A referendum vote is called for under the State’s Municipal Home Rule law for this type of alteration in local governance. I proposed this change when I learned of Gregg Sagendorph’s retirement after 22 years as Highway Superintendent, and the Town Board voted unanimously to put it on the ballot. While there are many advantages to departmental consolidation and I think it’s best for the Town Board and Supervisor to be accountable for all operations, there are opposing views. For example, while many believe that we are better served by managers recruited based on qualifications, skills and experience (as is the case for most town departments), others favor holding to the historical elective model, feeling that it promotes responsiveness and direct accountability for the highway superintendent. To me, the most important value is efficiency, and I believe that most residents have been pleased with the money saving modernizations implemented so far – like using bank lock box processing for town bills, combining maintenance operations, automated meeting agendas and video archiving – all of which save us time and money. I also don’t want to see town managers entangled in partisan politics, which you have to do when you run for office. Since becoming Supervisor I have been extremely pleased with the performance of Town employees, especially the civil service managers and the three appointed managers, none of whom were brought into Town government by me. I think that the best model for town department heads is professionally qualified nonpartisan employees. But the choice is now up to you the voters, and each of you will have to weigh the issues and decide based on your own criteria. A great deal of information is available on the town website as background, including previous studies, cost estimates, Q&A, etc. So go to www.townofbethlehem. org if you’d like more information as you consider your vote (there is a prominent link on the homepage), or give us a call. Most of all, I’d like to see a lot of people come out to vote in this referendum, which will take place at Town 26

Hall on Tuesday April 30 from 6am to 9pm. Absentee ballot requests are available through the Town Clerk’s office. Many other things are going on. We’re having a series of Community Town Hall meetings in neighborhoods across town, including an Elsmere/Delmar meeting at the Elsmere Fire Department on Monday April 15 at 7:00pm. The Comprehensive Plan Assessment Committee is completing its review of land use planning, a vital topic as we appear to be returning to a period of growth and development pressure. Another news item of special interest to golfers is that the Colonial Acres Golf Course is open again this spring, operated under contract by a PGA professional – so you’ll be able to get lessons there as well as play. Funding was removed from the budget last year given the gap we had to address, but we were hopeful a private operator could be found. Under this arrangement, the town will receive a small net income from the operation, rather than a growing annual loss. At the Elm Avenue Park Pool this year you will be able to renew or obtain a new pool pass right at the Pool, rather than going to the Parks Office, which does not have the same hours. Just show up at the pool for your first day of swimming, and you can renew your pass. Of course, if you renew passes online early, you’ll avoid waiting in line when it’s hot. So don’t forget to vote at Town Hall on April 30, and please have a happy and healthy spring.

BETHLEHEM Y RAYS

SWIMMING TO SUCCESS It was one of the best kept secrets in the Capital Region. And then the word got out. It spread fast among kids who wanted to make a big splash and be part of something fun and exciting. It spread to parents who were looking for something for their children to be active and happy, learn about team work and contribute to their positive development. It is no longer a secret that the Bethlehem-area YMCA Rays is the fastest growing swimming program in the state. It’s also not a surprise, given the tremendous dedication of the kids on the team, their coach Josh Wolin, the support of their parents and the rest of the Y staff. The BAY Rays swimming program was created in the summer of 2011 with 12 swimmers. It grew to 54 swimmers by the time that season began and by the end of the season it expanded more than doubled in size to more than 100 swimmers. When the Rays second season began last fall, 140 swimmers joined almost immediately, and even more were put on a waiting list. Word of the BAY Rays success was getting around fast. In their first season, the Rays had 29 swimmers qualify for the North County League Championships and 12 swimmers participate in the New York State YMCA swimming championships. At their first appearance at the state championships, both the eight-and-under girls and boys placed in the top eight out of 40 teams participating. Lenore Ciancio has two boys on the BAY Rays and said that all the coaches should be “glowing with pride” at the team’s success. “Thanks to each of you for all you do for our YMCA and for the families involved with the BAY Rays. It is rare to find,” she said. This winter, in the BAY Rays’ second season, 78 swimmers qualified for the North County League Championships and 33 qualified for the New York State YMCA Swimming championships. Swim team parent Derek Martin said, “The Y’s swim team program has enjoyed tremendous success due to the leadership and caring of Josh Wolin. He makes every swimmer feel like they are the only kid on the team. He knows all their times, their strengths, their stories and

28

how to motivate them to ensure enjoyment and success. From a parent’s perspective, his dedication and caring for our children is remarkable and it comes naturally for him. “At the recent New York State Championships, he entered our team dinner late after being on the pool deck for 13 hours,” Martin said. “He came in to a standing ovation and cheers from the parents and was ambushed by the swimmers, who gave him hugs and high fives. Mike Turi gave a wonderful speech and each kid shared one word about Josh and the team. It gave us chills as we beamed with pride. The kids, the families and the coaches are what make this team incredible and we are proud to be part of it.” Their success wasn’t just limited to the water. The children and their parents worked together to raise more than $18,000 to purchase a beautiful scoreboard and touch pad system to further upgrade the Y’s outstanding aquatic facilities and get the pool ready to host more swim competitions. In addition, the members of the swim team held a very successful swim-a-thon that raised $5,600 for the Y’s Reach Out For Youth program. The program helps Bethlehem families, who couldn’t otherwise afford it, take advantage of the Y’s programs for child care, summer camp, Circle of Champs, and other programs that benefit the community. Everyone involved with the BAY Rays swim team program is very proud of what they have accomplished and looks forward to even greater success in the future.

FINANCIAL FOCU$ Investors Can Learn from Earth Day’s Lessons First celebrated in 1970, Earth Day has grown into an international movement whose goal is to raise awareness of the need to take action to sustain a healthy, sustainable environment. You can do your part through recycling and other measures, but you can also apply some of the lessons of Earth Day to your financial situation — and, in particular, to your approach to investing.

Give these ideas some thought: ~Make the most of your existing resources. One of the most valuable lessons of Earth Day deals with the need to be responsible managers of the natural resources we have available. As an investor, it’s important to maximize the benefits of the resources to which you have access. For example, are you contributing as much as you can afford to your 401(k)? At the very least, you should put in enough to earn your employer’s match, if one is offered. ~Take advantage of a favorable environment. Underlying all Earth Day activities is the goal of creating a healthy environment in which to live. You may also benefit from a positive investment environment — and that’s what we appear to be experiencing, at least in terms of low interest rates, low inflation and the financial market. So in this favorable atmosphere, look for those investment opportunities that are appropriate for your situation.

with Jerry Pittz

~Don’t over-consume. Excess consumption has played a big role in causing some of the environmental issues we face. Consequently, many Earth Day programs teach us to get by with less, or at least to avoid acquiring more than we need. To translate this philosophy into your investment habits, take a close look at the number of trades you make. Are you constantly selling old investments and buying new ones in the hopes of capturing higher returns? This type of trading can result in significant fees and transaction costs — and possibly higher taxes, too. Perhaps just as importantly, this constant activity, with all its starts and stops, may detract from your ability to follow a long-term, consistent investment strategy. ~Avoid “toxic” investment moves. The motivation to create Earth Day developed, in part, by the growing awareness that industrial toxins were affecting our air and water. And you can find many toxic investment moves, too. To illustrate: Many people chase after “hot” stocks after hearing about them from friends or relatives, or seeing them touted by so-called experts in the media. But by the time these people acquire the hot stocks, the stocks may already have cooled off. Furthermore, these stocks may not have been appropriate for these investors in the first place. Another potentially “toxic” investment move is to try to time the market — that is, try to buy investments when prices are low and sell when they’re high. In theory, this is a good way to invest; in practice, it’s almost impossible to predict market highs and lows Instead, consider buying quality investments and holding them for the long term, or at least until your needs change. By following these Earth Day-related suggestions, you can help yourself make progress toward a healthier — and possibly more productive — investment environment. And that’s worth celebrating more than once a year. This article was written by Edward Jones for use by your local Edward Jones Financial Advisor. Trish’s Pix Tattered Pages Used Books

“Outside of a dog, a book is man‛s best friend. Inside of a dog it‛s too dark to read.” ~Attributed to Groucho Marx Greetings Book Lovers…. April is upon us…and as I write this article, my beloved Seamus is curled up in the chair next to me. Two pot- bellied squirrels are trying to break into my third “squirrel proof” bird feeder as Juncos, Chickadees, Sparrows & Cardinals dart about. Daylilies are sprouting up thru the snow and the sun is shining brightly overhead. Is Spring really here? Now is the time to plan my garden, even though there is still snow on the ground, the better I am planned the better chance there will be for me to move ahead with planting come late April/early May. I know a lot has to do with the weather cooperating and Jack Frost heading back to the polar regions, but this is the year I am determined to have sunflowers and peas …the two things that my lovely bunnies gobble down every year as they attempt to grow! Don‛t get me wrong…I love my wild backyard dwellers…but they provide a challenge in so many ways. The deer eat my apples, as do the squirrels & rabbits…but the tree also provides shade for the yard and homes for so many birds. The ground hogs love my eggplant but they aren‛t as smart or wily as the rabbits when it comes to my fencing. Last year I had a great crop of

36

tomatoes, peppers, zucchini, eggplant & herbs but I am always reading up on “green” fertilizer & pest control. I have started reading through some of the gardening books at the shop on container and raised bed gardening in hopes that this year I will have a more productive garden. I have found the books on perennials & pruning very helpful as well. All gardening books will be an additional 10% off for the month of April. As I refer to gardening books, do you have certain “self-help” books that you have kept and refer to occasionally? I have certain cookbooks that I love to just sit and peruse as I prepare to make my grocery list. I refer to my crafting books as I prepare to knit/crochet gifts for birthday gifts or Christmas gifts. Those gifts take time, so planning is necessary and having those books on hand is a great resource. My husband has a nice collection of woodworking books which he refers to periodically. We have such an eclectic selection of self-help, hobby and home improvement books here at the shop; everything from coffee table size to paperbacks. Also, another non-fiction area we have in our shop is Art & Music. You may not realize that we have a nice selection of music books in our shop. We have music history, music appreciation, sheet music and instrument lesson books starting at $1! We would love to have more…so if you should have any and would like to receive “trade credits”…bring them on by. My granddaughter, Trinity (age 6), spent the day with me at the shop one Friday (teacher conference) wearing a name tag “in-training.” She loves spending time in the shop visiting with customers, making change behind the counter but especially spending time amongst the books. She was reading to the stuffed animals in the children‛s section with such expression!

She showed her confidence by reading to some of our “regulars” & trying books that she had never seen before! We recently acquired approximately 100 new books in our children‛s section, many on animals, insects and dinosaurs. We have hundreds of early chapter readers starting with PK ready to read books straight thru leveled chapter books such as Encyclopedia Brown, Amber Brown, Polk Street School, Bailey School Kids and A to Z Mysteries. We have classics illustrated, Beverly Cleary, Judy Blume, Roald Dahl, Lemony Snicket, Dear America Journals, and American Girl Doll books. Many of our books are in next to new condition! With the April break coming up, why not come in and shop for great books for your children at a fraction of a cost of the big box stores? For adults, we have recently acquired more Lee Child, William & J.A. Johnstone, Susan Mallery, Harlan Coben and Robert Parker books. We are accepting books for trade credits, but in limited quantity as we continue to work on our inventory and cull older/unread inventory off the shelves. We will look at 5 books for trade consideration at this time. My friends, I hope to see you all soon here at the shop and if you have the time, visit our Facebook page, like us and share with your friends. Remember, you can always call us at the shop if you are looking for something specific and we will do the search for you…and hold the book for you until you can come by. Until next month…happy reading!

11 CRITICAL HOME INSPECTION TRAPS TO BE AWARE OF WEEKS BEFORE LISTING YOUR HOME FOR SALE Bethlehem, NY – The real estate market is improving by leaps and bounds and we are again seeing multiple offers on properties that are priced and marketed correctly. However, receiving an offer on your home is only one piece of real estate puzzle. There is nothing worse then receiving multiple offers, selling your home above the list price, and then having the sale fall apart because of home inspection issues. According to industry experts, there are over 33 physical problems that will come under scrutiny during a home inspection when your home is for sale. A new report has been prepared which identifies the eleven most common of these problems, and what you should know about them before you list your home for sale. Whether you own an old home or a brand new one, there are a number of things that can fall short of requirements during a home inspection. If not identified and dealt with, any of these 11 items could cost you dearly in terms of repair. That’s why it’s critical that you read this report before you list your home. If you wait until the building inspector flags these issues for you, you will almost certainly experience costly delays in the close of your home sale or, worse, turn prospective buyers away altogether. In most cases, you can make a reasonable pre-inspection yourself if you know what you’re looking for, and knowing what you’re looking for can help prevent little problems from growing into costly and unmanageable ones.

ALLERGIES!

What causes seasonal allergies? Seasonal allergies are caused due to small airborne particles called allergens. These substances are either a type of pollen or mold spores that come from trees, grasses, and weeds. As the allergens float through the air, they often end up in the nose, eyes, ears and mouth. Once they enter the body, the immune system can mistakenly mount an inflammatory response to fight the foreign invaders. For people who generate this reaction, they experience the uncomfortable and persistent symptoms known as seasonal allergies. How common are seasonal allergies? In the United States, it is estimated that 40 to 50 million people are affected by seasonal allergies. Furthermore, according to the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, 1 out of 10 Americans are sensitive to some type of pollen. The majority of these reactions occur in the spring, summer, or fall months. What are the signs and symptoms of seasonal allergies? Signs and symptoms include itching in the nose, top of the mouth, eyes, and throat sneezing, stuffy nose, runny nose and tearing of the eyes. If you have any or all of those symptoms mentioned above, you may be suffering from seasonal allergies. What do I do next if I think I am suffering from seasonal allergies? There are many over the counter allergy medications that are available to help you. They range from FDA approved medications to all natural drug free options. If you have any questions, ask your doctor or your pharmacist will be happy to assist you and answer your medication related questions. High risk populations such as children, pregnant women, people with high blood pressure and elderly should discuss with their primary care provider regarding their seasonal allergies. How can I treat the symptoms of my seasonal allergies? You can use a class of medication called antihistamines. They are effective at relieving the sneezing, itching of the nose and eyes, and reduces nasal swelling and drainage. Benadryl (Diphenhydramine) is a type of antihistamine that available over the counter. It is the most sedating among other antihistamines. Drowsiness will impact your ability to drive and operate heavy machinery. Allegra (Fexodenadine), Claritin (Loratidine) and Zyrtec (Cetirizine) can cause drowsiness in some people but definitely less so compared to Benadryl hence it is more suitable as daily seasonal allergy management. 40

Nasal Corticosteroids is another class of medication available to relieve your seasonal allergy symptoms. It prevents or reduces inflammation in the sinuses and nasal passages due to hay fever, other allergies and nasal problems. The medication is given in nasal spray which is instilled directly to your nose. This class of medications is available with a doctor’s prescription. Please consult your doctor about the benefits and risks of using nasal corticosteroids. NasalCrom (Cromolyn) is nasal spray available over the counter. Cromolyn reduces allergic rhinitis from by blocking the release of chemicals that trigger allergy symptoms. Some common side effects include headache, nasal irritation, and bad taste in mouth. Decongestants such as Sudafed (pseudoephedrine), Sudafed PE (phenylephrine) shrink the nasal passages which helps reduce congestion, swelling, and discomfort in the sinuses and nose. People with high blood pressure should use this class of medications with caution since they can further increase your blood pressure. Decongestants are also available in other formulation such as Visine Eye Drops (Tetrahydrozoline), Afrin (Oxmetazoline) nasal spray. There products can apply directly to either your eye or your nose to work locally to relieve your itchy nose and watery eyes. Topical decongestant such as Afrin (Oxmetazoline) is only suitable for short term use. Long term use can lead to rebound congestion. People who are seeking a natural drug free option to relieve seasonal allergies symptoms can try All-Natural Treatments Nasal Irrigation. It flushes out excess mucus and debris from the nose and sinuses. Also nasal irrigation often includes the use of saline solution to treat dryness inside the nose. The most common side effect of this medication is stinging. Commonly known names for nasal irrigation are Ayr, Ocean, Simply Saline Nasal Spray, Simply Saline Plus Neti Pot (Sodium Chloride). Avoiding the triggers is also the drug free way helping you with your seasonal allergy. It is definitely difficult to avoid pollens and grasses during spring time, but replacing a morning jog in the park with a run on the treadmill will certainly reduce your exposure to pollens. Also, a face mask can be used to reduce amount of pollen you breathe through your nose and mouth. References

Earth Day is officially celebrated every year on April 22nd. It began in 1970 as an “environmental teach-in” to promote ecology and respect for life on the planet. Now celebrated in more than 190 countries worldwide, it brings attention to the outstanding yearlong efforts of many millions of people to make the world a better place to live. There are many ways to celebrate Earth Day: plant a tree, clean up a local park or playground, remove roadside trash or by holding or participating in a local recycling event. At Scrapster we participate in several ways. Being a scrap metal recycler we operate 100% to make sure the appliances and other scrap metal related items we pick up are broken down and separated correctly into basic components (wire, motors, etc.) for more effective re-use. We also provide a large scale junk removal service where we do the same type of organizing which involves donating items such as clothing and splitting out cardboard, metal, wood, magazines, etc. so they can be recycled properly. We are proudly in our third year as an official NY State DEC Electronics Collection Site. Recycling raw materials from end-of-life electronics is the most effective solution to the growing e-waste problem. Most electronic devices contain a variety of materials, including metals that can be recovered for future uses. We work with our sponsor, eWaste.com, as they handle the dismantling and reuse possibilities, helping conserve natural resources and minimizing air and water pollution caused by hazardous disposal.
