Deer and Tick Committee Initiatives The Bethlehem Committee on Deer and Ticks are hosting a series of educational forums this fall. All events will be in the Town Hall auditorium, beginning at 7pm. The program will include guest speakers and there will also be informational tables where residents can get more information on a variety of topics related to deer and ticks. Please check out the committee webpage as information about these events will be updated as the dates approach.

Ticks and Tick Borne Disease – A Primer: Thursday 9/24 7pm Learn more about ticks including tick biology and life cycle, as well as the symptomology of various tick borne diseases Keeping Ticks Away: Thursday 10/15 7pm Learn about integrated pest management techniques you can implement at home and learn about the managing ticks and pets.

We’ve supported a number of additional community groups this year, including; “The Shriners, VFW Men’s Auxiliary, Regional Food On Saturday, May 22, Gaffney was riding his bicycle with a friend on Bank, YMCA Day of Caring, Judge Jordan Scholarship, Anthony the sidewalk of Delaware Avenue. The Bethlehem Police Officers’ Union and the Bethlehem Police Supervisors’ Association were proud to support the Spring Renegades 8U Baseball Team that competed in the American Amateur Baseball Congress (AABC) Roberto Clemente World Series held in Waterbury, CT the week of July 23-26.

PS – We’ve recently heard again that dozens more of the “We support Bethlehem Police” signs have been stolen from homes in our community. The purpose of these signs was to start a conversation and increase communication with the residents and business owners of Bethlehem. From our perspective, this dialogue has been extremely helpful and we cannot thank the community enough for its support! Unfortunately, we cannot continue to sustain the sign campaign. As the Town has continued to take them down and as residents continue to have their signs vandalized or stolen, it doesn’t make sense to keep replacing them. Remember, you can still show support by stopping by the Bethlehem Police Department in person to pick up your PBA window decal. Thank you again for your support!

Town of Bethlehem Partners with Habitat ReStore to open second in the nation donation program at the Town Transfer Station Town of Bethlehem residents with gently used household goods and building materials will be able to donate them to Habitat for Humanity Capital District under a new program the organization and the Town are launching this Thursday, July 23 at 10 a.m.

The Habitat chapter will open a pickup and storage facility at the Town of Bethlehemâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Transfer Station, 136 Rupert Road, Selkirk, NY 12158.

Tax-deductible donations of furniture, working appliances, plumbing and lighting fixtures, and building materials such as windows, doors, full gallons of paint and lumber in good condition will be sold at Habitatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s â&#x20AC;&#x153;ReStoreâ&#x20AC;? at 70 Fuller Road in Colonie, which is open to the public. The nonprofit aďŹ&#x192;liate uses proceeds from resold items to build aďŹ&#x20AC;ordable homes in Albany, Rensselaer and Saratoga counties.

The Bethlehem program is modeled after the success of Habitatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s first such venture at the Clifton Park transfer station, which was unveiled last spring. While there are 1,700 Habitat for Humanity centers across the country and 900 ReStores, the Clifton Park and Bethlehem sites may be the only non-ReStore Habitat donation sites of their kind in the entire country, according to Mike Jacobson, Habitat for Humanity Capital Region Executive Director. â&#x20AC;&#x153;â&#x20AC;&#x2122;One personâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s trash is anotherâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s treasureâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; as the old saying goes. And this gives Bethlehem residents and transfer station customers a new, convenient option for giving a second life to their unwanted goods and building materials,â&#x20AC;? said Dan Rain, Bethlehem Recycling Coordinator.

Bethlehem, like most of the rest of the country, was fascinated by the Greek revival style of architecture in the early to mid 1800s.

By Susan E. Leath style public edifices to common vernacular farmhouses sported an interpretation of this distinctive style. Two examples in Bethlehem are the Adams House Hotel and the Haswell-Houck Tavern.

and picked his spot in Bethlehem. On February 10, 1834, he purchased 92 acres from Dexter Brown that included the location on the turnpike where he would build his hotel. In the years to come he would go on to buy more parcels in the Four Corners area and Normansville totaling to 515 acres. Adams built his Greek Revival style Adams House in 1838. It was a stagecoach inn and local gathering spot becoming the nexus of the community soon to be known as Adamsville.

The Adams House In the 1830s, the crossroads that would become the Delmar Four Corners was a quiet, rural spot on the Delaware Turnpike. Burr’s 1829 map indicates one could head south west out of Albany to the rural metropolises of New Scotland or Rensselaerville About this time, Nathaniel Adams was the proprietor of the popular Marble Pillar in Albany catering to a well-to-do clientele.

As late as 1837, Adams was advertising in the Albany Evening Journal his “splendid and fashionable resort… the Marble Pillar… given a new polish… besides his daily ordinary, Mr. A. has made arrangements for an early and full supply of first rate oysters, lobsters, fish and every delicacy.”

Adams saw opportunity in the continued development of stage coach service along the Delaware Turnpike

A recent picture of the Adams House. While the front part of the building keeps its Greek Revival character, the rear portion has been substantially added on to over the years to accommodate the Delmar Fire Department.

On the personal side, Adams (1802-1892) was born in Connecticut to Simeon and Ester Adams. He married Rhogenia Baumis (1806-1861) September 4, 1825.

They had a number of children but surprisingly the usual sources are a bit murky about exactly how many they had. The 1850 Federal census lists George (21), John (15), Martha (11) and William (9), while the 1855 New York census lists John (20), Martha (16), William (13) and Delia (4). All of which makes sense until a newspaper clipping regarding Nathaniel’s will turned up. George, John, Martha and William are mentioned plus James and Ann but no Delia.

Besides his career as a hotelier, Nathaniel was the first postmaster in Adamsville, appointed in 1840. He was also a noted horticulturalist. In 1842 the Adams’ donated land for the Delmar Reformed Church and in 1871 the First United Methodist Church of Delmar purchased their plot from Adams for $500. He and his family left a lasting mark on the hamlet. For example, John continued to run the Adams House until it was sold to the Delmar Fire Company in 1920. George was Bethlehem’s supervisor from 1867-1870. He donated the land on Adams Street for the original Bethlehem Public Library building. William served during the Civil War with Company F of the 7th New York Heavy Artillery.

The Haswell-Houck Tavern The same 1829 map Burr map shows no roads in the vicinity of today’s Feura Bush Road and Elm Avenue.

By 1854 the Clarksville and Albany Plank Road (a.k.a.

Feura Bush Road) and Elm Avenue are clearly on the map. And so is the building known as the Haswell Houck Tavern. It’s massive triangular pediment and square white columns have been a landmark at this intersection since about 1845.

The Historic American Building Survey, undertaken as a WPA project that began in 1933, surveyed the building in 1937. It reports that the building was “at one time an old tavern, used frequently by the stage coaches when crossing the county, and where mail was frequently exchanged. Now it is used as a private dwelling and during the summer is rented to a family by the name of Houck. It was also at one time used as a Meeting House.”

Bethlehem Revisited reports that the building was constructed by W. Haswell and occupied by the Houck family. This makes sense as Gould and Moore’s 1854 map has W.H. & D.C. Haswell on this corner as well as the one diagonally opposite. Looking at the 1850 US census, one can infer that Houcks and Haswells were neighbors. John & Susan Houck, their four year old son Peter , James & Harriett Houck, their son Isaac (also age 4) and their baby (listed as infant age 3/12) all share a dwelling and are listed as farmers (dwelling #659). The very next dwelling (# 660) is headed by John Haswell (age 70, farmer) and included William and Hester Haswell and their children Henry and Margaret. Dwelling #652 is Lucus W. Feder (or Veder – the spelling is unclear.) who is listed as innkeeper. Whether this is the Greek Revivial house that stands today is a mystery. When the Beers map of 1866 was published it lists no Haswells at the intersection but does list a Mrs. Houck on the corner where the house is.

Interestingly, inn or hotel keeping seems to be something of a family business for the Houcks.

An Albany directory for 1844 lists a Mrs. Houck as running a boarding house at 95 ½ Market Street. An 1870 gazetteer lists James Houck as proprietor of the Plank Road Hotel in Clarksville (which was built c.1851 by Peter L. Houck) and James B. Houck as the proprietor of the Sager Hotel in New Salem. Another Albany directory, this one for 1878, lists a James Houck as proprietor of the Globe Hotel on South Pearl Street with William P. Houck clerking there.

Also listed is William Houck as a hostler, someone who looks after the horses of those staying at an inn.

Christian Houck is another prominent hotel-keeper in nearby Guilderland. Houck’s Hotel in Clarksville was a going operation through 1927.

While it couldn’t be verified that Houcks (or Haswells for that matter) ran a tavern or inn here, they certainly left a mark on the hamlet. Houck’s Corners, with its schoolhouse, was certainly a known place name for many years.

FINANCIAL FOCU$ No Secrets to Investment Success Many people look for the “secrets” to investment success. Is it timing the market just right? Is it finding those hot stocks or getting in on the “ground floor” of the next big thing? Actually, these types of moves have little relevance to the vast majority of investors — even the most successful ones. So let’s take a look at some steps you can take that can be effective in helping you work toward your financial goals.

•It’s time in the market…not market timing. Some investors think they can succeed at “market timing” — buying when the price is low and selling when the price is high. And this would indeed be a good strategy if they could predict highs and lows. No one can accurately forecast these peaks and valleys, though. So, instead of ducking in and out of the market in a vain attempt to catch the highs and lows, simply stay invested. The more time you spend in the market, the lesser the impact you’re likely to feel from short-term price swings. And if you’re always invested, you’ll always be in a position to benefit from the next market rally.

•It’s “buy and hold” — not “buy and sell.” Even if you aren’t trying to time the market, you may be tempted to buy and sell frequently as you look for new and better opportunities. Yet, this constant buying and selling can be costly. Frequent trading, with all the additions and subtractions from your portfolio, can make it hard for you to follow a consistent, unified investment strategy. You’re better off purchasing quality investments and holding them for the long term, until either your needs change or the investments themselves no longer possess the same attributes they did when you purchased them.

•It’s building a strong foundation — not getting in on the “ground floor.” Many people regret not being one of the initial investors of a company that has done spectacularly well. But most new companies don’t achieve anywhere near that level of success. So, instead of looking for the next big thing on the “ground floor,” try to build a strong “foundation” consisting of a mix of quality investments suitable for your risk tolerance, goals and time horizon.

This type of investing may not sound glamorous, but a strong foundation is better equipped than a possibly shaky ground floor to withstand the shifting winds of market forces.

But by the time the news reaches you, these stocks may already be cooling off. Even more importantly, they might not be right for your needs in the first place. Instead of chasing after hot stocks, which, by their nature, carry a strong emotional component (namely, the desire for quick, big gains), try to coolly and dispassionately analyze your situation to determine which investments are really most appropriate for your goals.

There really aren’t any shortcuts to reaching your desired financial destination. But by taking the slow and steady path, you can work toward getting there.

CAR CARE TIPS MAKE YOUR CAR LAST LONGER! Don't Drive Want your car to last? Don't use it. That sounds obvious, but it's worth keeping in mind. Chances are there are plenty of times when you currently use your car that you could be walking, biking, using public transportation or carpooling — choices that are better for the environment, your wallet, your health, and the car you won't be driving. It's simple: The less you drive, the longer your car will last.

Make Fewer Short Trips Short trips of less than 10 minutes can be particularly hard on a car, resulting in excessive wear and tear. During a short trip, your car's engine never has a chance to reach its full operating temperature. So what? Here's why it matters: One of the byproducts of engine combustion is water. When an engine reaches its operating temperature that water turns to vapor and is expunged, either out the tailpipe or the crankcase ventilation system. On a short trip, however, that water stays inside your car's engine and exhaust. Unfortunately, water is one of only three ingredients necessary to make rust (you've already got the other two, oxygen and metal), and rust kills.

A further complication of condensation and water is that it dilutes your oil, which then does a poorer job of lubricating the engine. If you can't avoid taking lots of short trips, we recommend you change your oil frequently, such as every 2,000-3,000 miles.

Do Your Regular Maintenance Skipping regularly scheduled maintenance intervals is one of the quickest ways to assure your car finds its way to an early grave. Regular oil changes and oil, fuel and air filter changes all help make sure your car has what it needs to run without problems: clean air and clean fuel, plus fresh, uncontaminated oil to prevent wear and tear. An added bonus to regular service? It gives good mechanics an opportunity to spot problems before they balloon into something more serious.

If you’re wondering how often to do these things, there’s a book that explains it all to you. It’s called the owner’s manual.

You’ll find it in your glove box, shrink-wrapped in plastic, because — if you’re like most of us — you’ve probably never looked at it. In the back you’ll find a list of service intervals, and the services that are recommended during each of them. If intervals in the book stop at 120,000 miles, that doesn’t mean you’re done with maintenance. Go back to the beginning and start over.

Dear Constant Readers,

I hope that your children have been staying active with their reading during the summer. There is a wonderful selection of books, actually hundreds, for your children here in the shop. Don’t let them get out of the habit of reading & writing just because formal school is out. Yes, they need a “break”, but reading & learning should not be something that has a vacation! Even if they are struggling with reading, that experience should not be dropped and expected to be easily picked up again come September.

For those History buffs amongst you…I have just acquired some incredible books on the founding Fathers, Revolutionary War & Civil War. Some of these are beautiful coffee table books from a former history teacher who is moving south for his retirement. I have also acquired quite a few more books in the “urban fantasy” section of the shop. Books which have a paranormal flair, witches, vampires, faeries, etc. are part of my guilty pleasure. With hundreds to choose from, remember that I have these in my inventory along with Sci-Fi/Fantasy!

A request for more “board books” and books for toddlers, please, for my inventory; as well as a request for “Magic Treehouse” and early chapter books for grades 2-4 would be greatly appreciated!

August is the month when I take my vacation to Sebec Lake, in north central Maine where I retreat, refresh & renew myself in the crystal waters of the lake and fill my lungs with pine-fresh air. My hours of operation will be posted on the front door and Facebook (though I will be off the grid). My e-mail will be down during my absence. Our dear friend, Linda, will be working certain days while I am gone. Tentatively this will be the breakdown, but could change, so if in doubt, please call before coming over. The store will be closed M,T,W: August 17, 18, 19, then open TH & F: August 20, 21, 12-5, Sat: August 22, 12-4. The following week the store will be closed M,T,W: August 24, 25, 26 and open TH & F: August 27,28 12-5 and Sat. August 29: 12-4 and closed Monday, August 31. I should be back for full function on September 1st.

In preparation for my trip to Maine, I will be bringing about a dozen books to read. Last year I read 7 books in 2 weeks. I will most likely review them for you in the future. As I write this today, the door is open wide on Tattered Pages Bookshop, Seamus is asleep, curled up atop the cash box on the counter, the sun is shining, there is a light breeze and the humidity is low! My Pandora channel is upbeat and the shoppers have been intermittent. Tattered Pages is in its 8th year of business here in the Glenmont Center Square at the corners of Route 9w South & Feura Bush Rd. and I am ever hopeful that this year will be my most profitable! I have a clear view of the new CVS thru my front door as traffic bustles thru the intersection. Summertime is in full swing. A dragonfly just buzzed up and down the center aisle of the shop before turning around and departing in a blur out the door! Today is one of those days where there is a magical air in the shop! Each book here containing its own tale to tell, awaiting the next reader to set it into motion!

These past few weeks there has been a high demand for one particular book: Harper Lee’s “To Kill a Mockingbird”, which many of you know is my favorite novel of all time! I have just recently acquired a copy of “Go Set a Watchman”, the recently released Harper Lee novel. I have to admit, I am a bit nervous about reading it. The history and controversy surrounding this book I have mentioned previously in other articles. When Harper Lee submitted her first manuscript, over 50 years ago, the editor’s ripped the work apart, literally. What they felt was worthy of publishing were the memories of the main character, 26 year old Jean Louise “Scout” Finch as she travels home South to be with her aging father, Atticus. As in reality, I am afraid to find flaws revealed in our otherwise sterling character of Atticus Finch. I have read “To Kill a Mockingbird” more than a half-dozen times over my life. Written in the mid-50s by a young novelist, her vision, her very personal novel has become like a hazy memory from my own childhood.

My first reading was done my seventh grade summer.

That hazy, humid summer with the music of the night orchestrated by crickets & tree toads, I read each chapter imagining a time, a place and people so foreign from my own personal life & experience. These memories of “Scout” & one influential summer in the South, were Trish, Linda & Seamus so beautifully presented, I relished every word, every event. three years ago. In his memory, Laurel formed the “Myles of Smyles” Foundation to provide support for families facing life-threatening challenges. Alicia Ramos, a wellness and group exercise instructor at the Y, told the cyclists about her experience as a breast cancer survivor. Also speaking to the group was Alexandra Siy, who told them about her mother, who loved cycling and battled cancer.

Last month at the All Star game home run derby in Cincinnati, a crowd of 60,000 people took time out from the competition to stand up to cancer. Each fan stood and held up a sign with the name of a friend or loved one with cancer.

One night. One event. One stadium. One huge crowd. And every single person stood to remember someone close to them who was fighting cancer or had their life taken by cancer. Everyone in Bethlehem could do the same.

The students train throughout the year and commit to raising $3,500 each to fund cancer research as well as to provide support for cancer patients. Since 2006, the Illini 4000 has raised more than $800,000. This year’s goal is $150,000.

In May, the Bethlehem YMCA opened its doors for a special group of young people who are cycling across the country to open people’s hearts and minds about the devastating impact that cancer has on families in our community.

A group of 29 students from the University of Illinois are cycling from New York to San Francisco to raise money for cancer research and raise awareness. They began their cross-country biking journey in Central Park in New York and arrived at the Bethlehem YMCA on Memorial Day for a barbeque dinner and some much-needed rest. But their stop had a much larger purpose than to refuel and relax.

The cyclists gathered in the Y’s conference room to hear from members of our community about how cancer has impacted their lives and the lives of their families. The group refers to these sessions as “portraits,” a collection of narratives that illustrate how Americans respond to cancer.

Each story reflects an individual’s unique life experience.

The Illini 4000 are collecting and sharing these portraits across the country to inspire people to rise together in the fight against cancer.

The group heard from Laurel McAdoo, who lost her nineyear-old son Myles, a fixture at the Bethlehem Y, to cancer 38

Junior Alex Kott of Aurora, Ill., joined the Illini 4000 because several members of her family are cancer survivors.

“Every morning we dedicate the day to a person, and when things get hard you just think about them (and what they went through),” Kott said. “Compared to that, giving up my summer is not that big of a deal.”

The Capital District YMCA offers the LIVESTRONG program to help cancer survivors begin their journey toward recovery. Through this program, the Y provides adult cancer survivors with a safe, supportive environment where they can participate in physical and social activities that focus on strengthening the whole person, not the disease. This nocost, 12-week program meets twice a week for 90 minutes, using traditional and holistic exercise methods to ease back into fitness and help people maintain a healthy lifestyle.

The team rides an average of 72 miles per day and relies on the charity of others for a place to stay, stopping at schools, community centers and churches along way. As of mid-July they had just crossed from Utah into Idaho. The Bethlehem YMCA was proud to help out these dedicated young people who have a big trip, a big goal, a big mission, and even bigger hearts.
