Trish Pix Tattered Pages Used Books

“Books are the perfect entertainment: no commercials, no batteries, hours of enjoyment for each dollar spent. What I wonder is why everybody doesn’t carry a book around for those inevitable dead spots in life.” -- Stephen King

Greetings, fellow readers, As I write this, summer is already half over! It has been my pleasure to assist so many readers here at Tattered Pages during July. I hold a special place in my heart for children, especially children who love to read. One of those phases of summertime that always makes me cringe is to hear any child say that they are bored! CBS Sunday Morning commentator, Bunmi Laditan, addressed this condition beautifully this past week. Following are some of her own words regarding her children & boredom! “I need to explain something to you: You are bored. You are not sick. You are not a victim of misfortune. You are not undergoing great tragedy, nor are you in the midst of personal crisis. The discomfort you are experiencing is what previous generations referred to as “a state of rest.” Boredom is an opportunity for something called, “free play.”…You are human children with fully-functional imaginations. I’m going to need you to use them. Boredom is not a problem to be solved. It is an itch to be scratched. Boredom is the dawn of ideas. Boredom is curiosity knocking gently at your mind, asking to play. Boredom is infinite possibility.” As a teacher, I would give each student a new pencil & a writing journal and a pep-talk very similar to the aforementioned commentary on the first day of school. Boredom is a state of rest that should give each individual pause to think. If you cannot occupy yourself, I feel sorry for you! I told my students that an inactive mind should be stimulated and the infinite possibilities can lie in music, artwork, physical activity, and reading! Books are still the most affordable method of entertainment. Without the constraints of time that “school” brings, summer often has looser time parameters. One has the time to stretch out in the shade, with a cool drink and a book. You can enter a world of intrigue, adventure, mystery, romance, humor, history, and so much more. If you haven’t read, “To Kill a Mockingbird”, I strongly suggest that you read it this summer and drift back to a hazy, southern summertime of crickets, cicadas & ice tea, while stepping back to that remarkable summer of Scout, Jeb, Calpurnia, Dill, Atticus and Boo Radley. What you choose to read is your own personal preference, though many have required summer reading selections from school. Many of my “required” readings still remain some of my favorite books even today. Tattered Pages holds about 19,000 titles, all on a database, and all at reduced prices. I will order books, if they are not in stock, and always pass the savings on to you. The shop has been in this location for over 7 years and I would love to be here for 7 more, but so much of that depends on you, my dear readers. Please tell others about my shop and the services that I offer. You can find me on Facebook: Tattered Pages, LLC and on the web: www. tatteredpages365.webs.com. Recent additions to the store are gently used toys for babies & toddlers, DVDs and several children’s series & picture books. I am currently in need of clean “board” books for babies & 4

toddlers. I am also, always looking for “classic literature” as there is a huge turnover in books by Austen, Hawthorne, Hemingway, Steinbeck, and Vonnegut! My most recent books read are “Eat This, NotThat” ( a nutritional look at our choices & alternative choices for eating.) “Summoning”(the first in a trilogy of supernatural teens just discovering their powers while under the scrutiny of a psychological lab) by Kelley Armstrong, and Rick Riordan’s “Rebel Island”. I am gathering my big bag of books for my vacation trip to Maine the end of August/Beginning of September. I usually bring about 10 books for the duration. Looking forward to hours of reading on the deck, the dock, on the porch and next to the woodstove in Sebec Lake, Maine with the sounds of the loons on the lake and my buddy Seamus cuddled nearby. During that time Linda & Larry will be covering the store with these amended hours. August 25, 26, 27, 28 10am5pm, August 29 10-6pm, August 30 10-4, CLOSED: September 1,2,3,4, /OPEN: Sept 5: 10-6, Sept. 7 10-4. I appreciate your understanding during my vacation time. In closing, I want to thank all of my customers who have frequented Tattered Pages this summer. Tell a friend about my unique shop where Seamus & I are always up to helping you fight the dreaded boredom that may sneak up on you. We are always prepared to suggest a few good books. Until I return from vacation…Happy reading… Trish, Linda & Seamus Patricia Eldridge is the owner~operator of Tattered Pages, 365 Feura Bush Rd. in the Glenmont Center Square. Ask the

Canterbury Vet August 3rd-10th is National Assistance Dog week, in recognition of all the devoted, hardworking assistance dogs helping individuals mitigate their disability-related limitations. International Assistance Dog Week is a time to recognize the importance of service dogs and the freedom they provide to their human counterparts. Assistance Dogs transform the lives of their human partners with debilitating physical and mental disabilities by serving as their companion, helper, aide, best friend and close member of their family. These specially trained dogs perform many tasks for their partners with disabilities and are classified in the following ways: Guide Dogs assist people with vision loss, leading these individuals around physical obstacles and to destinations such as seating, crossing streets, entering or exiting doorways, elevators and stairways. Service Dogs assist people with disabilities with walking, balance, dressing, transferring from place to place, retrieving and carrying items, opening doors and drawers, pushing buttons, pulling wheelchairs and aiding with household choirs, such as putting in and removing clothes from the washer and dryer. Hearing Alert Dogs alert people with a hearing loss to the presence of specific sounds such as doorbells, telephones, crying babies, sirens, another person, buzzing timers or sensors, knocks at the door or smoke, fire and clock alarms. Medical Alert/Medical Response Dogs alert to oncoming medical conditions, such as heart attack, stroke, diabetes, epilepsy, panic attack, anxiety attack, and posttraumatic stress disorder. All of these types of assistance dogs are dedicated to their humans, who rely on them to achieve their daily function. Please celebrate the selfless love and devotion these dogs so humbly provide by participating in National Assistance Dog week. What should I do if I meet a service dog team? Thank you for taking the time to read about how to handle interactions with a service dog team. Keeping these points in mind when meeting or just passing by a service dog team will make a world of difference and the handler will certainly be appreciative.

12

A. If a service dog handler will not let you pet his or her dog. Some service dog handlers have a strict “no petting” policy and some don’t. If a handler doesn’t allow petting, it may be because it would prevent the dog from performing his or her her job correctly. It is up to the handler to decide, on a case by case basis, whether others may pet the service dog. B. If a service dog handler doesn’t stop to chat. Many service dog handlers are happy to answer respectful questions about their service dogs. However, this may not always be possible, as the handler may be in a hurry, may not feel well, or have other reasons not to be able to stop and talk at that moment. 3. Never offer food to a service dog without first receiving permission from his handler. Even service dogs can be tempted by food. While service dogs are trained to ignore food on the ground and not to beg when there is food around, it can still serve as a distraction. Furthermore, not all dogs can eat all food- even dog food or dog treats. Feeding a service dog something that can cause an adverse reaction could not only make the dog sick, but this would also mean the dog cannot work until he is better. This would effectively take away his handler’s independence. 4. Offer help but do not insist. Service dog handlers are very appreciative of others who ask them if they need any help. If you think a service dog handler may need some help, ask before acting. Do not attempt to take the dog’s leash or harness from the handler and do not attempt to physically move or direct a handler unless he or she has given you permission to do so. If a service dog handler rejects your offer to help, please respect his or her wishes. Navigating roads with traffic can be very challenging for a service dog team. Many drivers and fellow pedestrians try to help, but end up making things more difficult for the team. Do not honk your horn at a service dog team to indicate that it is safe to cross the street, as this can make it more difficult for the handler to observe other signals that traffic has stopped. Do not announce from afar that it is safe to cross the street. If you are a fellow pedestrian, simply ask the handler if he or she would like help crossing the street. 5. Treat service dog handlers with dignity. Speak to the handler, not to the dog. Speak to the handler as you would anyone else and do not ask personal questions about his or her disability.

1. Most importantly, do not distract the dog or interfere with his job. In order to perform their jobs to the best of their abilities, service dogs must be able focus on either their handler, or the task at hand. While service dogs are trained to the highest of standards and typically ignore distractions, they are not infallible. A distracted service dog could slip up on a key part of his job and put he and his partner in danger. Some things that can distract a service dog are: - Calling to the dog - Making kissy, barking or other sounds at the dog - Petting the dog without permission

6. Do not ask a service dog handler to have his or her dog demonstrate a task. It is in poor taste to ask a service dog handler to cue the dog to demonstrate a task. Service dogs’ jobs revolve around mitigating their handlers’ disabilities, and disabilities are very personal matters. Furthermore, many service dogs do work that is dependent on very specific circumstances that cannot be recreated on a whim.

Please do not allow young children or pets to interfere with a service dog team.

7. Do not draw unnecessary attention to a service dog team. Pointing, exclaiming things like, “Look, a dog!” and doing other

things to make a spectacle of a service dog team are rude and make service dog handlers feel uncomfortable. Allow a service dog handler to go about his or her business just as you would anyone else. 8. Do not photograph or video record a service dog team without permission. 9. 11 CRITICAL HOME INSPECTION TRAPS TO BE AWARE OF WEEKS BEFORE LISTING YOUR HOME FOR SALE Bethlehem, NY – The real estate market is improving by leaps and bounds and we are again seeing multiple offers on properties that are priced and marketed correctly. However, receiving an offer on your home is only one piece of real estate puzzle. There is nothing worse then receiving multiple offers, selling your home above the list price, and then having the sale fall apart because of home inspection issues. According to industry experts, there are over 33 physical problems that will come under scrutiny during a home inspection when your home is for sale. A new report has been prepared which identifies the eleven most common of these problems, and what you should know about them before you list your home for sale.

Whether you own an old home or a brand new one, there are a number of things that can fall short of requirements during a home inspection. If not identified and dealt with, any of these 11 items could cost you dearly in terms of repair. That’s why it’s critical that you read this report before you list your home. If you wait until the building inspector flags these issues for you, you will almost certainly experience costly delays in the close of your home sale or, worse, turn prospective buyers away altogether. In most cases, you can make a reasonable pre-inspection yourself if you know what you’re looking for, and knowing what you’re looking for can help prevent little problems from growing into costly and unmanageable ones.

Then

& Now Bethlehem Baseball By Susan E. Leath The Slingerlands Village Wonders about 1910.

22

Bethlehem residents have enjoyed a long relationship with the game of baseball. Notable teams include the Echos of Slingerlands who played from about 1889 to 1895. From the early 1900s until about 1915, the Village Wonders were a strong team from Slingerlands. Slingerlands and Delmar had teams from the 19-teens right up to the 1930s. The Tri-Village Little League and Bethlehem Babe Ruth got going in the 1950s and continue strong today. The Slingerland Village Wonders organized about 1901. These talented players swung their bats on a ball field that was just north of today’s Cherry Arms Apartments on the west side of Cherry Avenue. Later the diamond was moved to near today’s Kenwood and Union Avenues. By 1909 yet another field was utilized at the end of Mullens Road in Slingerlands. They were a part of the Susquehanna League organized around villages along the D&H Railroad line. Teams came from Delanson, Guilderland, Altamont, Voorheesville, Slingerlands, and Delmar. The September 4, 1908 edition of the Altamont Enterprise notes that over 500 people watched the baseball game against the Altamont team. It was described as “A Snappy Game From Start to Finish.” While the Village Wonders disbanded around 1915, Slingerlands continued to field other teams as part of the Albany County League. Delmar’s baseball team also played for the

Susquehanna League, the Albany County League and as an independent club team. Their first field, Station Field, was near Delmar’s stop on the D&H Railroad which was at intersection of today’s Hudson Avenue and Adams Street. Later they played near today’s town hall on Delaware Avenue and later still at Brockley Field near today’s high school. Bloomer Girl teams also made appearances in our area. The Knox team played the Stanford Heights Bloomer Girls in September of 1921. The Bloomer Girls were said to be a fast team and the game was expected to be a “hummer.” Slingerlands played the New York City Bloomer Girls in 1929 and had a scheduled game rained out in 1930. The Electric City and Mohawk Giants Bloomer Girls also played in the area. Little League has its roots in Williamsport, PA where the first Little League game was played on June 6, 1939. Littleleague.org reports that “the basic goal remains the same as it did in 1939, to give children of the world a game that provides fundamental principles (sportsmanship, fair play and teamwork) they can use later in life to become good citizens.” Bethlehem’s Tri-Village Little League held their first tryouts on April 3, 1954 at Bethlehem Central Junior High School (present day Middle School) and their first games were played on May 15 at Magee Park

on Kenwood Avenue. Four teams were organized sponsored by F.F. Crannel Lumber Co, Carroll Pharmacy, Studler’s Sales and Services and Main Brothers Oil Co. 60 years later, the league still plays at Magee Park. In April of 1955, efforts were underway to organize the Bethlehem Babe Ruth League for players between the ages of 13 and 15. The season opened on June 27 with four teams sponsored by Redmond & Bramley, Handy Dandy Cleaners, Heath’s Shady Lawn Dairy and Franchini Painters & Decorators. Games were played at the Junior High School. Today, the league consists of 10 teams who play their games at the ball fields on Line Drive. Today, sociologists and government planners are making the argument that the age of the suburb is drawing to a close. While change is constant, consider this quote written on a cuneiform clay tablet to the King of Persia in 539 BC, “Our property seems to me the most beautiful in the world. It is so close to Babylon that we enjoy all the advantages of the city, and yet when we come home we are away from all the noise and dust.”

Message from the Supervisor Bethlehem is a great town, with many advantages, and we have a real sense of place and community. We have a natural town center, a series of hamlets both historical and modern, and are much more of a walkable town than most suburbs. We have great parks, nature preserves, rural areas and other open spaces. All of these attributes help define i and d it’s i vitally important to preserve and our community, enhance them where we can.

We’re also helping BCSD lower costs and raising our own interest earnings by using town funds to provide for the usual cash flow borrowing done at the start of each school year. We’ll keep looking for win-wins in shared services, working with the schools and other governments. Town managers are now busily working on the 2015 budget, which will be presented next month. The Town of Bethlehem is in good financial condition, and we’ll keep working hard on savings so that it stays that way.

That’s why we’re taking another look at our parks and recreational opportunities through a master planning process, investing in sidewalks and other civic improvements. We’re also focusing heavily on traffic and safety issues, and working with NYS DOT on crosswalks, speed limits and intersection improvements.

I hope you’re enjoying the summer!

Every traffic issue is ultimately a planning issue, and we’re facing increasing development pressure, so it pays to think ahead. The Town works in many ways to preserve open space, and these efforts got a big boost this year with passage of state legislation allowing Bethlehem to offer conservation easement property tax exemptions. These exemptions will be available to landowners willing to forego development for a minimum of 15 years, and in return they’ll get a tax exemption of 50% or more, depending on the period of the easement. That’s an ideal way to incentivize open space preservation and help keep growth in check.

Town Supervisor

Another defining aspect of our community is the great schools we have in Bethlehem, and town government is working with the school districts on various ways to improve efficiency. This year school property taxes for Bethlehem Central (BCSD) and Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk (RCS) will be billed and collected by the responsible school districts, rather than by the Town of Bethlehem. The change will provide savings by consolidating collections, which span several towns and currently involve differing systems. Instead, BCSD and RCS will now use a regional collection service run by BOCES. Guilderland school taxes in North Bethlehem will continue to be collected by the Town, at least for this year. For most residents – those who mail in their payment using the envelope provided, or pay through a bank escrow account – this change may not even be noticed. School tax bills are mailed out by early September regardless of which district you live in. The address for payments mailed to BCSD and RCS will change, so those using bill paying systems will need to update the address. Both BCSD and RCS are making arrangements with local banks for people who want to pay in person. Requests for 2014 school tax information, tax bills or receipts for BCSD and RCS should go to those school districts (check their websites or call). Regardless of how you pay, please be aware that school tax bills must be paid or postmarked by September 30 under state law, and penalties of 2-4% are assessed on late payments. 26

You should also know that under a new state Tax Freeze Credit program, rebates will be mailed out to residents in the fall, as all three school districts within the Town stayed under the property tax cap this year. The rebate is intended to have the effect of freezing taxes, but will be paid even for taxpayers with lower school taxes (which many will have due to the reassessment).

CAR CARE TIPS MAKE YOUR CAR LAST LONGER! Don't Drive Want your car to last? Don't use it. That sounds obvious, but it's worth keeping in mind. Chances are there are plenty of times when you currently use your car that you could be walking, biking, using public transportation or carpooling — choices that are better for the environment, your wallet, your health, and the car you won't be driving. It's simple: The less you drive, the longer your car will last.

J.A. Myers & Co. Interior / Exterior

Painting 421-3813 jamyerspainting.com

Make Fewer Short Trips Short trips of less than 10 minutes can be particularly hard on a car, resulting in excessive wear and tear. During a short trip, your car's engine never has a chance to reach its full operating temperature. So what? Here's why it matters: One of the byproducts of engine combustion is water. When an engine reaches its operating temperature that water turns to vapor and is expunged, either out the tailpipe or the crankcase ventilation system. On a short trip, however, that water stays inside your car's engine and exhaust. Unfortunately, water is one of only three ingredients necessary to make rust (you've already got the other two, oxygen and metal), and rust kills. A further complication of condensation and water is that it dilutes your oil, which then does a poorer job of lubricating the engine. If you can't avoid taking lots of short trips, we recommend you change your oil frequently, such as every 2,000-3,000 miles.

Free Estimates Fully Insured Serving the Town of Bethlehem

Do Your Regular Maintenance Skipping regularly scheduled maintenance intervals is one of the quickest ways to assure your car finds its way to an early grave. Regular oil changes and oil, fuel and air filter changes all help make sure your car has what it needs to run without problems: clean air and clean fuel, plus fresh, uncontaminated oil to prevent wear and tear. An added bonus to regular service? It gives good mechanics an opportunity to spot problems before they balloon into something more serious. If you’re wondering how often to do these things, there’s a book that explains it all to you. It’s called the owner’s manual. You’ll find it in your glove box, shrink-wrapped in plastic, because — if you’re like most of us — you’ve probably never looked at it. In the back you’ll find a list of service intervals, and the services that are recommended during each of them. If intervals in the book stop at 120,000 miles, that doesn’t mean you’re done with maintenance. Go back to the beginning and start over.

Tips for Stress-Free Summer Travel Tips for Air Travel • Book your ticket ASAP. If you must book last minute, remember, you have options. The key to securing the best deal is flexibility in travel dates--ask your travel agent to check into special fares or consider flying into an alternate airport and renting a car. • Arrive early. Difficult airport parking, long lines at security checkpoints and the possibility of the airline overselling the flight and bumping passengers, should all be considered when deciding what time to arrive at the airport. Give yourself plenty of extra time. Need some incentive? Keep in mind that those who arrive earliest for an overbooked flight stand the greatest chance of staying onboard. • Keep a close eye on all your belongings. Just as flights are becoming extremely crowded, airports can also be fraught with thieves. Be aware of your surroundings and maintain a close watch over tickets, wallets, purses, and other belongings at all times. • Avoid getting bumped. 1) Get an advance seat assignment. Passengers with seat assignments are typically only bumped if they arrive late and their seat assignment is released. 2) Check-in online. Most airlines allow you to do so within 24 hours of departure. Seat assignments that were not available at the time of ticketing may be available when checking in online. 3) Don't be late. If all else fails, get to the airport early. Some airlines reserve a portion of their seat assignment inventory for airport check-in.

• Remember 3-1-1. New regulations limit the amount of gels and liquids passengers can take through security in their carryon luggage to travel-size toiletries of three (3) ounces or less that fit comfortably in one (1) quartsize, clear plastic zip-top bag and the one (1) bag per passenger must be placed in the screening bin. • Know your limits. Pack light and know baggage limits. Some airlines now charge for a second piece of checked luggage. Tips for travel by car •

Plan itineraries and arrange accommodations well in advance. Reservations for hotels, restaurants and rental cars get booked quickly during peak travel times. Your travel agent can help you get the lowest rate and make sure your rental car has room for your family, luggage and whatever souvenirs you bring home. • Get a tune up. Before any long-distance drive, make sure to have your oil changed and your brakes, fluids and tire pressure checked. The slightest deficiency in air pressure significantly reduces your car's gas mileage. On the flip side, too much air can result in a flat. •

Get an early start to avoid gridlock. Traveling during late night/early morning hours helps. The worst times to travel are after meals since most travelers postpone leaving until they've eaten with their families. Make sure that all drivers are thoroughly rested.

439-2833 TRASH TALK

IMPORTANT NEWS UPDATE! Summer continues in the Capital District and you know what that means. Sweltering temperatures with no breeze in sight, seemingly endless stretches of humidity followed by random thunderstorms on any days you schedule an outdoor barbeque, the AC in your car suddenly stops working the one day you need to wear a suit to work, etc. Welcome to August my friends! Let’s focus on the positive: it’s finally nice out and all your appliances are actually working great. But if something stops working properly, you’ll want to replace it right away and have the broken one taken out ASAP. That’s where we come in, in this case, literally. Don’t let just anyone take these away for you; it’s time to call Scrapster. Here’s why: older air conditioners, central air condensers, dehumidifiers, refrigerators, freezers and water fountains/ coolers all contain refrigerants (think Freon) like R-12, R-22 and R-500. It is commonly believed that these substances are major contributors towards the depletion of the ozone layer and other problems in the environment. Even modern refrigerants like R-134a and R-410a are not the greatest, but they are vast improvements over the older technology.

At Scrapster we are fully EPA608 certified for the responsible reclamation and recovery of all types of refrigerants. Scrapster will remove the items from exactly where they are located-you don’t need to do a thing. We bring the unit back to our facility where we process it, pulling out the refrigerant with our recovery equipment and then shipping it out to be fully recycled by our supplier. We then take apart the appliance and separate and recycle all the metal components such as motors, wire, tubing, plus radiators and sealed unit compressors. Scrapster is a family owned local business which provides a NO COST scrap metal and appliance pick up and removal service. We also offer LOW COST junk removal and clean outs. Additionally we are a New York State DEC approved location for business or personal electronics recycling. You deal directly with us. Everything is properly recycled, disposed of or donated. We are convenient, reliable, insured, and we do all the work. “Don’t Worry…We Can Take It!”™ Please call us today at (518) 505-5055 or visit our website at www.scrapster.com for more information or to schedule an appointment. We hope you continue to have a great, safe summer!

Avoid Expensive Errors When Paying for College It’s just about Back-to-School time again. If you have young children, you might be hustling them to the store for backpacks and binders. But if you fast-forward a few years, you can envision driving your kids a little farther — to their college dorms. And when that day comes, you’ll want to be financially prepared. So you’ll want to avoid making costly mistakes when preparing for, and paying, those big bills. Here are some of the most common of these errors: •Not saving enough — Only half of all families with children under 18 save any money for college, according to a recent study by Sallie Mae, the country’s largest originator of federally insured student loans. You might find it easier to save for college if you automatically move a set amount each month from your checking or savings account to a college savings vehicle. •Not considering vehicles with growth potential — The same Sallie Mae study found that more parents use a general savings account than any other method of saving for college. But since most savings accounts these days pay only a minimal rate of return, you will have trouble getting the growth potential you need to achieve your college savings goals. Consider working toward your college savings goals by investing in a vehicle specifically designed for college, such as a 529 plan or a Coverdell plan. There are differences between these plans, such as contribution limits and tax treatments, but both allow you to invest for growth potential. As with any 3 38

•Stop your savings once your children are in college — Unless your children plan to take an awful lot of credits, they’re not going to finish college in just one year. Consequently, you’ll want to keep investing in your plan or other college savings vehicle while your children are in school. •Taking out 401(k) loans — Your employer may allow you to take out a loan against your 401(k) to help pay for college. But this may not be a good idea for two reasons: First, when you remove money from your 401(k) — even if you plan on eventually paying it back — you will slow the potential accumulation in your account, thereby depriving yourself of resources you will eventually need for retirement. Second, should you leave the company, you might have to repay the loan within a limited number of days. •Not using available tax credits — Depending on your income, you might qualify for the American Opportunity tax credit, which is worth up to $2,500, provided you spend at least $4,000 on college expenses. Check with your tax professional to see if you qualify for this credit and how to most effectively incorporate it. And be careful you don’t waste the credit, because you may not be able to use it and your plan distributions at the same time. Paying for college can be challenging — but if you can avoid making the above mistakes, you’ve got a better chance of getting your kids through school without derailing the progress you’d like to make toward your other financial goals.

THE

LWhat do I need for a Summer First-Aid Kit? Paul Pagnotta, Pharmacist & Co-Owner Four Corners Pharmacy

Ready for some summer fun in nice weather? Don’t forget to bring along your first aid kit. The American Red Cross recommends having a well stocked first aid kit in your home and car. What items should be included in a first-aid kit? It is important to have some basic items in your kit (listed below). However, make sure that your kit includes anything special your family might need for their own health (prescription medications, epi-pens for bee allergies) or for the type of trip you are taking (snake bit kit in certain parts of the country, or blister bandages for long hiking trips). Check the kit about twice a year when you change your clocks (and smoke alarm batteries) to be sure everything is in date and nothing is missing.

SUPPLIES

MEDICATIONS

Flashlight (with extra batteries) Scissors Tweezers Thermometer Safety pins Eyewash cup Elastic bandage Waterproof tape Butterfly bandages Blanket Waterproof matches Instant cold pack Bandage strips Gauze pads Disposable Gloves – non latex Emergency contact information (phone numbers for doctors and family)

Anti-diarrhea medicine Motion Sickness pills Sunscreen with UVA & UVB protection Lip balm with sunscreen Calamine lotion (bug bites, poison ivy) Eye saline drops Antibiotic ointment (cuts and scrapes) Hydrocortisone Cream (rash, bug bites) Hydrogen peroxide (wound cleansing) Instant hand sanitizer Baby aspirin 81mg (heart attack) Bug repellent Acetaminophen (fever, pain) Aloe gel or spray (sunburn) Allergy medication (allergic reaction to bees/stings)

How do I use the medications and products suggested? Get a pocket first aid book for the kit to be prepared and read the medication box to know when to use them and how to use. More importantly, read when NOT to use them. For example, it is recommendation not to use anti-diarrhea medication in someone with a high fever. And, some patients with certain disease states or other medications should not take motion sickness or allergy medications. Check with your doctor or Four Corners Pharmacist for your specific conditions.

How can I avoid motion sickness while traveling in a car, boat, airplane, or train? There are a few things you can try to avoid motion sickness. First, face forward looking at the outdoors and look far toward the horizon. Get in the middle of whatever you are riding to get the least amount of movement. Some people find settling their stomach with dry crackers or bland pretzels helps ease the nausea. There are nonmedicated wrist bands that work for many people available at a low cost. Non- prescription and prescription medications can be taken before the trip starts, however, they can make you drowsy and should not be used in certain people. Ask your doctor or pharmacist and read the package.

What sort of bug repellent should I put in my first aid kit? Insect repellants containing 20-30% DEET is effective at preventing mosquito and tick bites. It is safe to use infrequently and in low concentrations. DEET should be applied only to exposed areas of the skin and not underneath clothes. Reapply it every few hours (check the product label). To limit exposure to DEET do not apply it to broken, wounded or sun-burned skin and wash the treated area and clothes with soap and water after returning indoors. Concentrations above 30% DEET are not recommended for prolonged or frequent use, 40

For children (under age 5) use products containing less than 10% of DEET and try to avoid repeated applications. Spray the product on your hands first and then apply it to your child to avoid children transferring the product from their hands to their eyes, nose or mouth. Alternatives to DEET, such as picaridin and oil of lemon eucalyptus can repel mosquitoes but may not repel ticks.

How should we manage sunburn? If you could not avoid sunburn by using a broad spectrum UVA UVB sunscreen, you can reduce the pain and heat of a mild to moderate sunburn. Apply cool, wet compresses to the affected area and an aloe based lotion or spray can soothe the pain. Over the counter sprays containing lidocaine, a local anesthetic, can help alleviate the heat and pain associated with sunburn. It is important to stay hydrated so make sure to drink plenty of fluids when healing sunburn. For continued sunburn pain, over the counter medications such as ibuprofen and naproxen are also helpful in reducing pain and inflammation. However, be sure to read the package label on how to use these medications safely. During the recuperation process avoid further sun exposure.

What else can I do to protect my family on a summer vacation? There are many things you can do to protect your family. Having a first-aid kit is no substitute for prevention. The best way to deal with injury and illness is to prevent it. Remember to use the proper protective equipment (helmets, padding), get proper rest, don’t drive when tired, and take a cell phone for emergencies. Consider taking a Red Cross First Aid or CPR class to better handle family emergencies. You can also read reference books about plants and bugs to help better protect your family from common summer ailments. And always be aware of your family’s sensitivities and needs so you can protect him or her as necessary.

GET TO KNOW GEORGE CORSAN If you learned to swim at the YMCA, you can thank George Corsan. If you’ve taken your son or daughter to the Y for a group swimming lesson, you can thank George Corsan. Many people who will go swimming this summer in oceans, lakes and pools, can thank George Corsan too. So, who is George Corsan? George H. Corsan, Sr. was a Canadian who did more than any single person to popularize swimming in North America. In the early 1900’s he developed YMCA swimming programs, designed the pools and originated the first group swimming lessons. In response to a YMCA campaign “to teach every man and boy in North America” to swim, George Corsan arrived at the Detroit YMCA in 1909 to teach swimming using radical new methods: group swimming lessons and lessons on land as a confidence builder. In Newark, N.J., alone, he taught 800 boys to swim in just four weeks. Swimming classes expanded throughout the century to include families and people with disabilities. In addition to helping youth feel safe around water, swim activities develop kids’ problem-solving abilities and bolster their self-esteem. This year, the Bethlehem Y will give swimming lessons to over 400 kids and 100 adults, and there were about 200 youths on the Bethlehem-area Y swim team this year. Prior to coming to America and the YMCA, Corsan was the head swimming instructor for the International and National YMCAs in Canada where he was the first swimming teacher to teach beginners the crawl stroke rather than the traditional and more difficult breaststroke.

52

More George Corsan Uberfacts: He directed swimming instruction at World War I training camps in California; he developed the Boy Scout masters course for aquatic instruction; he invented “water wings” for beginning swimmers; he received the Canadian Royal Life Saving Society Award of Merit in 1899; his motto was “Paddle your own canoe, but first learn to swim;” He wrote three books on swimming, diving and life saving; His book entitled: At Home in the Water: Swimming, Diving, Life Saving, Water Sports, Natatoriums, published in 1914, is still available and is number 12 million on the Amazon best seller list (really, it is). Corsan was also an expert diving instructor. He wrote an article for a YMCA publication in 1918 on the need for diving instruction and the benefits of diving. In Corsan’s article, which used some colorful phrases for the time, he wrote that knowing proper diving technique is essential if you must dive 90 feet off a sinking ship that is in flames. He also wrote that learning to dive is great for “fraidy cats” because “it is an anti-dote to faintheartedness.” He also relished the challenge of teaching diving to people he described as “structurally awkward, stiff-jointed and stupid at coordination.” So, next time you come to the Y for a swimming lesson, or the next time you jump in a lake, or off a burning, sinking ship, take a moment to thank George Corsan, the father of swimming and diving instruction.
