Neighbors Next Door
It’s hard to imagine the impact that would have on a person. Devastating doesn’t seem quite right. Paralyzing might describe it more aptly. Kim’s reaction to losing all of those dear people was to walk away from the music. She couldn’t bear to sing, to be on stage. Her comrades were lost, gone. So she took her music, and packed it away with her sorrow and grief.
And then, nearly twenty years went by. For the years when singing was not part of her life, she filled it with many other things. Kim carried on, but thoughts of Nicole and her friends were always close. Full as her life was, the void of music and singing tugged at her. And never Sit and talk to Kim Riker, and you find a pretty, sweet, went away. accomplished woman. She’ll smile and laugh as she There is the job, working with Dr. Thomas Abele at modestly describes her quiet life. There is her day job, Delmar Dental Medicine . A job she loves, for both the as administrator for a local dental practice. She’ll also patients and her co-workers. The staff is small, only 20 talk about family and friends who she is close to. And her people, and dogs. Talk of her two labs makes her smile, too.
Rock ‘n’ Roll Singer: Kim Riker
But ask about her musical life, the gigs and her band, Playin’ With Fire. Her face changes from the nice girl next door to a passionate rocker. Someone who lives to strut on stage, belting out rock n’ roll tunes. Kim loves to get up in front of an audience and have that moment with her band mates. The moment where they make eye contact and know they’ve got a certain tune just right. Then, it’s just up to Kim to draw the crowd in. And she will do that. It might be talking to them, or dancing in the audience with her wireless microphone. She’s even been known to jump up on the bar, to wake up a sleepy crowd. Get everyone in the groove. Because while Kim Riker is on stage, folks should be moving. Dancing and feeling the passion in her music. She has known all of her life that she would be a singer. Be on stage and in front of people. Her passion was so great and she was so driven, that she chose Syracuse University to study musical theater. Kim loved the program there. Music. Camaraderie and youth. She was very happy. When the opportunity to study in London was presented, she jumped on it. It was a great three months spent traveling, partying and studying. And always working on the voice. At the end of those three months, she was invited to spend Christmas with friends in Germany. Her parents were not happy about the decision, though. It was a long semester and they wanted her home for the holiday. Spontaneous and a free spirit, she chose Germany instead of boarding the flight home. She said goodbye to her best friend Nicole and all the classmates in her program as they headed back to the states. After winter break, they’d all be back at school together in Syracuse. But it was not meant to be. Because the flight they took from London that day tragically exploded over Lockerbie, Scotland. The flight was Pan Am 103 - and Kim Riker was not on it.
Full as her life was, the void of music and singing tugged at her. And never went away.
they are like a second family to her. The patients are the biggest joy, though. Some, she has known for 20 years. Many know her well and love her singing. They follow Playin’ With Fire to all their gigs - near and far.
Another important piece in Kim Riker’s life is her martial arts. She’s been studying and teaching Aikido for 13 years. The Aikido has taught her to deal with anger and frustration. To find balance and harmony. This, she says, was life altering. Kim has been a black belt for eight years and uses the philosophies and meditation techniques in her life everyday. Her life is full, yes. And she had grown into a happy woman. But there was still that one thing, like an itch that wouldn’t go away. Her voice and music had been quiet for so long. The chance came to audition for a local band, and she knew it was time. Playin’ With Fire is a continued on p.14

Many people have heard the term “assistedliving” and are becoming familiar with this unique level of senior care that exists today. Essentially, assisted living provides care and services to senior citizens who are not yet in need of a nursing home, but may be unable to function at an optimal level in their own home. The goal of assisted living is to encourage and promote independence and quality of life for every resident, while providing the supportive services a person needs to achieve this goal. Assisted living communities generally offer a host of services and amenities to their residents, including accommodations ranging from semi-private rooms to one and two bedroom apartments. Amenities such as cable television, telephone, high speed internet, transportation, housekeeping and laundry services, activities and social events, and three meals and snacks daily are often available. Most assisted living communities provide assistance with managing medications and help residents with personal care and other activities of daily living. In addition, assisted living communities generally have 24-hour staffing, emergency call systems, and other services that provide peace of mind for the resident and their family members. The specific services and amenities offered can vary, so it is important to learn as much as possible to ensure that you find a community that meets the needs of the person. Assisted living is a great way for seniors to remain members of the community at large, while benefiting from the array of services and amenities that will help maximize safe independence. 12 AUGUST 2010
What is Assisted Living? To make a referral to an assisted living community, simply phone the community and schedule an assessment either at the persons home, rehabilitation center, hospital, or if the person desires upon a visit to the community. A thorough search which includes touring several communities is encouraged. Different communities have different ways of billing residents and different levels of services offered. Therefore it is important to be aware of and understand the differences when making a comparison. Your local assisted living community, Delmar Place, is situated right in the heart of Delmar close to town businesses, shopping and the Public Library. A familyowned community, Delmar Place is “all inclusive” and offers its residents one flat-rate, monthly rent with NO buy-in or community fees. This flat-rate includes all care, services and amenities. Stop by for a tour, and see for yourself what a beautiful place to call “home” it really is. Ask about our “Senior Stimulus Savings Plan” extended through September 7th, 2010 to save $2500 in the first year of residency. Submitted by Kristin Vivian, Director of Community Outreach at Delmar Place Assisted Living Residence, 467 Delaware Avenue, Delmar. www.delmarplace.com or 518-434-HOME (4663)

band who’s been around for awhile, started by a group of Elsmere firefighters. Guys who love to jam. They play the music she loves, rock tunes from Heart, Rush and Journey. It was a great fit, right from the start. Her ties to the Elsmere Company though, run deeper. Her dad, Michael Cirillo has been a firefighter at that house for over 30 years and recently was named Firefighter of the Year. Getting up on the stage again after so many years wasn’t easy. She had some work to do to get it all back. The same determination that got her a black belt helped her get up on the stage again. Seeing her recently at one of their gigs, she looked and sounded great. This woman has real talent. She moves around, confident, talking to the audience and hitting all the right notes. The road has been long, and at times very painful. The journey back to the musical world has been healing for her. It’s made her whole again. She’s living the life of a passionate singer again. And clearly, the audience is glad she’s back. For more information about Playin’ With Fire and a schedule of dates, visit: playinwithfireband.net

THE COLLABORATIVE REVOLUTION: CHOOSING HOPE OVER FEAR FOR COUPLES AND FAMILIES IN CRISIS
Where in Bethlehem???
This Article is the first of a three-part series exploring the Collaborative Law Process as an option available to couples or parents who are involved in a separation, divorce, Family Court proceedings, interfamilial disputes, partnership termination or other family law matters, including the modification of current orders of support and custody. Collaborative Practice, including Collaborative Law and interdisciplinary Collaborative Divorce, is an option that combines the advocacy of traditional legal methods with the interest-based negotiations of Mediation. It is a way to resolve disputes respectfully, without going to court, while working with trained professionals, who help you reach a separation or divorce “with dignity”, and has been called “the peaceful divorce”. Collaborative Practice involves a team approach to solving problems. The Professional Team consists of Attorneys, Mental Health Facilitators, Divorce Coaches, Child Specialists and Financial Specialists, all of whom have received collaborative training under guidelines established by the International Academy of Collaborative Professionals (www.collaborativepractice.com). These speciallytrained individuals continue with intermediate and advanced training as part of their commitment to the Collaborative Process. Negotiations are done in a series of conferences with a couple, who are known as the “Participants”, and with the members of the Professional Team. Each Participant has his or her own attorney throughout the process who advocates for them. The attorneys work cooperatively with each other and the Participants in a safe and comfortable setting to insure dignity, respect and full disclosure throughout the process.
There is only one named lake in the Town of Bethlehem. That is Frothingham Lake, pictured here in 1877. This small lake is located at Van Weis Point. Many illustrious Albanians built summer homes at the point in the late 1860’s, including the Frothingham family. An iron gate held by stone pillars marked the entrance to the private road used to reach these lovely homes. One pillar still stands at the entrance to Mosher Road. Submitted by the Bethlehem Historical Association
The rest of the Professional Team works in tandem with the attorneys and the Participants. This unique approach to problem-solving brings together those experts that may be needed by the Participants to address issues such as parenting and custody arrangements, budgeting and financial needs, child and spousal support, and communication facilitation for those couples going through a rough time in the marriage or relationship. Future articles will address in greater detail the role of the various Professional Team members, as well as the “Affiliate Members” who are available to assist those couples who have chosen the Collaborative Process, and include Certified Professional Accountants, Business Valuators and Financial Advisors, Real Property Appraisers and Real Estate Agents. Each member of the Professional Team pledges to stay out of court. No member of the Professional Team can be involved in the case should the Participants leave the process and take their matters into the courtroom. The goals of the Collaborative Process include: to resolve disputes respectfully while staying out of court; to minimize the negative effects of divorce on children; to preserve long term family interests and relationships; to further communication and effective parenting; and to allow the Participants to move on with their lives without having to be part of a protracted or embittered court battle. One effect of collaborative divorce is that parents and children suffer less and recover faster. “Mr. Bouncy Bounce” Q. Describe how you got started in your business. A. I decided to leave a job as Materials Manager at GE Plastics Selkirk after 21 years of service. My wife Janice and I had undertaken 2 different business ventures before purchasing the bounce ride rental business. We were partners in owning the Ravena Bowling Alley and then had a family style restaurant called Shindigs near Lake George. Both of those ventures didn’t pan out so well to put it mildly….. so my wife went back to work for GHI health insurance and I just happened to be looking for a used refrigerator for the garage in the Want Add Digest on a Tuesday morning back in 2005. I spotted the Bounce Ride Business for sale. I called my wife over to the computer and showed her the picture of the bounce ride for sale and her question to me was “You want to be Mr. Bouncy Bounce?” My reply was “sounds like fun to me and after everything that has happened to us with these last 2 businesses I could sure use some fun”. So she being the very supportive partner that I adore said “Ok let’s go talk to the guy”. We did and purchased the business and just 5 years later we are 5 times the size of original business. Bounce Alot Party & Music Rentals Inc is a family owned and operated local business. Kevin and his two daughters Jessalyn and Jaime, currently do the deliveries for our customers. My son Evan is currently serving with the Marine Corps in Afghanistan, and upon his arrival home next year I hope to have him delivering as well.
the kids. Depending on the structure for the event, schools have made from $600 to $1,600 for the kids by hosting a 2 hour event! Q. How does your business give back to our community? A. Since 2007 when I started keeping records I have donated over $26,000 of services to organizations and individuals in our local communities. During the 2009 season I had donated back to the community over $8,000 and I’m above that rate for 2010. Some of the organizations I have helped locally include Churches, the Boys and Girls Scouts, Little Leagues, Bethlehem Braves, Bethlehem Soccer Club, Gilda’s Club, Bone Marrow Society, Fire Departments and many other individuals and organizations totaling 140 in need. Q. Are you known for anything special? A. Along with the bounce rides, carnival games and concessions for rent, I have been playing music professionally since 1977. I play a 12 String Acoustic/ Electric Ovation and use a wireless microphone to entertain at many family events, pig roasts, adult organizations, weddings and may other types of celebrations. I have a unique style of “roaming around” the crowd and getting everyone to sing along. I play all genres of music including but not limited to: 50’s, 60’s, 70’s to today, Jimmy Buffett, Country, Irish, Old Time Sing Along, Rock and Roll, Elvis, Eagles and many others. I also DJ and do weddings and karaoke parties. Many times at family parties I bring a bounce ride and games for the kids along with providing the live entertainment, DJ and KJ music for everyone. B. Another unique service I provide is a special fundraising event for schools called a Bouncin Disco. I bring in 3 bounce rides for the gym along with a full DJ set up with lights. In the cafeteria I set up all 3 concessions, popcorn – sno cones – cotton candy, along with a Karaoke set up for

CAR CARE TIPS 147 Million Gallons of Wasted Gas? It’s a Drop in the Bucket. Loose gas caps, underinflated tires, faulty thermostats, worn spark plugs, malfunctioning engine controls, poor wheel alignment and the list goes on. These are among the conditions that daily cost consumers millions of dollars in wasted fuel. “Something as innocuous as an improperly tightened gas cap, for example, or one that’s missing or defective, might seem a minor factor,” said Rich White of the Car Care Council. “But consider that 17 percent of the vehicles on U.S. highways have either misused or missing gas caps, causing 147,000,000 gallons of gas per year to vaporize into the atmosphere (source: Service Tech Magazine, September 2000). “To the maxim ‘waste not, want not,’ we need to add ‘be car care aware,’ because most drivers are unaware of the economic consequences of neglected maintenance.”

White said the nearly 150 million gallons of gas out of the filler cap are literally a drop in the bucket of waste. “Among the six worst offenders are underinflated tires and incorrect wheel alignment, conditions which increase rolling resistance. Like driving with the parking brake not fully released, it can cost a mile or two per gallon on a car that normally delivers 20 miles per gallon. “Among other gas guzzlers,” said White, “are dirty oil, a mile per gallon; a slipping automatic transmission, another mile per gallon and as much as two mpg for a cooling system thermostat that causes the engine to run too cold. “Finally, there could be a malfunction of one or more components in the fuel, ignition or emission control systems, especially critical in cold weather driving. The fuel penalty for just one misfiring spark plug is two or three miles per gallon. “Combining all of these discrepancies into one vehicle, the cost of wasted fuel easily could exceed recent increases in pump prices,” said White. “It’s what being car care aware is all about.”

A letter from Bethlehem Town Hall Town government offers opportunities for all of us! First impressions of government usually focus on services provided to residents and taxes and fees levied to provide those services. Of course, there is a lot more to it that those simple characteristics. Over the last six months, Supervisor Messina has provided us with reports of what we have accomplished, what we still need to accomplish and how we will move our Town to a higher level of governmental excellence and continue to improve the “quality of life” in Bethlehem. He has also spoken of the skilled professional and dedicated staff at Town Hall that constitutes the team that moves our initiatives forward. When Sam offered me the opportunity to write this month’s report, we agreed that I would write about something a little different, to give you a different perspective. It did not take long to choose two aspects of local government that may be a little different but certainly relate to services we provide and, in fact, even help ease the cost of services. These aspects of Town government involve many of us and, in different ways, benefit all residents. Volunteerism is an expression of community support and Public Participation is an important element of government communication. Let’s look at volunteerism. Bethlehem certainly does have an excellent Town staff and they are often recognized for their individual and collective achievements. In addition to our fine department heads and staff is an incredible and not so well known resource, volunteers! As I was gathering information and statistics for this report, I realized that I couldn’t calculate a precise level of volunteer effort, but I’ll try to give you an appreciation of the scope of volunteerism that is seen at Town Hall. Bethlehem’s Office of Senior Services, along with Bethlehem Seniors, Inc. engages the largest group of volunteers. In a given year they have a roster of 225+ volunteers available to drive seniors to shopping, professional appointments, deliver meals, manage the food pantry, prepare taxes and perform many other helpful, friendly and compassionate tasks. These volunteers range from caring teens to adults; all of them sacrifice their time to help senior programs! In 2009, they donated 17,550+ hours! As you know, our Department of Parks and Recreation employs teens and college students, especially during the summer season, but they also welcome a cadre of young volunteers to help with a variety of programs. They help at special events and work at the PIT, Eagle Scouts build projects at the parks and Job Corps helps with clean-ups at Henry Hudson Park. In 2009, these volunteers donated 2700+ hours! Their Bethlehem experience often is the seed of volunteerism for the future. Bethlehem Youth Court involves volunteer adults providing guidance and instruction for this important function while volunteer teens staff the operation of the court, filling roles of judge, jury, clerks and lawyers. Community cleanup often attracts 10-15 volunteers once a month. Volunteering takes interest, sometimes a passion, and a person willing to adjust a busy personal schedule to accommodate others. Another large (80-90) category of volunteers consists of those appointed or asked to serve on the various advisory committees. Sam has talked about the 20/20 Implementation Committee, (focused on efficiencies in town operations, economic development and cooperation among taxing jurisdictions) and the various planning committees; each committee has Town staff involved in leadership
24 AUGUST 2010
roles but the core workings of the committees consist of volunteers, invited to participate, because of their expertise, experience, familiarity and passion for the particular mission of that committee. These volunteers are not only a Town resource; they are an expression of an involved community. Their work and time are highly valued and there is no doubt that the services the Town provides are enhanced with their help; there is also no doubt that the value of volunteerism translates into cost savings or cost avoidance. One final comment relates to recognition; our volunteers don’t do what they do for recognition or notoriety; they donate their time because they believe it is the right thing to do! (In this Our Towne article I have written only about volunteerism related to the Bethlehem Town government. It would take many, many pages to describe the exceptional volunteer activities of fire and emergency management services, the many other wonderful civic organizations in our Town, those who volunteer in the school system and the many volunteers helping with the charitable causes that are personally important to them.) A sense of community can also be gauged by citizen participation in local government. When we need a local government service, want to air a complaint or simply gather information, we usually don’t hesitate to call Town Hall. But public participation can also be a way that citizens contribute to better decisions and, generally, to better government. Some residents take the opportunities to attend Town Board meetings as well as other official Town meetings and they use the opportunity to comment or take part in the advisory committee meetings. As a member of the Planning Board, I can cite numerous examples of informed public input that made a difference to the final project and the final Board decisions. Town meetings are regularly attended by some residents, whose participation is admirable, thoughtful, and informed and sometimes, because of a different perspective, enlightening. If one person can have a great idea, the ideas of more than one can even be greater. Of course, not all of us agree on all things, but we can agree to disagree without being disagreeable and try to move toward solutions that satisfy all parties. Public participation is not just an idealistic concept; it is a critical tool for building and improving the kind of local government that is responsive to its citizens. It is a practice that encompasses gathering facts and knowledge, formulating opinions, and communicating them to others. Sounds simple, but oftentimes we don’t participate until we’re directly affected, which makes it more difficult to keep emotions in check, balance facts and communicate effectively. Throughout the year, 20 or 30 Bethlehem High School seniors will attend Town Board meetings to satisfy the requirements of the Participation in Government class. That experience begins to instill the essence of local government and public participation into our future leaders. It is not unusual for a student, along with the regular attendees and others, to make a comment or two. Yes, we do rely on our elected and appointed officials to lead the Town to higher and more cost-effective levels of government but the Town will get there sooner and in more innovative ways with your public participation. I appreciate the opportunity Supervisor Messina provided to me to write this piece about two aspects of local government that aren’t mandates, nor are there laws or rules and regulations requiring them. These are actions that citizens take because they care about our future and choose to make a positive contribution to the quality of life and local government in Bethlehem.

drink with a pretty little umbrella sticking out of it. Including a lunch break and the expected and unexpected, “Mom, I gotta go!” stops, it took us about 6 hours to reach our motel. It felt like eternity and I was tired but……..not to worry, in a few days I’d have a great tan while enjoying beach-time with my kids.

NO PLACE LIKE HOME “Summer time…..and the livin’ is easy” From Porgy and Bess These are the beginning lyrics to one of my favorite songs. It certainly has been a hot summer and the dog days of August that are fast approaching us can’t be any hotter than the days of this past July. Growing up, my son and daughter spent many hot sunny afternoons swimming and “chillaxin’ ” at our beautiful town park. I worked part-time on weekdays and arrived home about noon. The sitter already had the kids in their bathing suits and as soon as they heard the garage door going up…..they’d yell out our den door, “Hey mom, can we leave now ….. please….. please….. Mom!”
To my surprise I soon found out that my children, unlike their mom, were not beach and ocean people. In fact, we spent most of the time swimming in the motel’s indoor pool! So here I was inside, looking out across the street at the beautiful beach and ocean. I thought to myself.....we could be doing this at the town park without the cost of a pricey motel room! Oh well, the kids were having a blast and that’s what was important to me. Most of our evenings were spent on the boardwalk going on amusement rides and enjoying some of our favorite foods….. pizza, hamburgers, curly fries, fried dough, ice cream and Italian Ice. One evening though, was spent in our motel room watching TV because both kids had belly aches which led to frequent bathroom trips. I pulled out a bottle of Pepto-Bismol from my “doctor mom” medicine bag and waited anxiously for the pink potion to work its magic. After 5 active days, we were ready to come home. The only tan I got though was on my left arm, from laying out the car window. The kids were happy to be back and I was looking forward to sleeping in my own bed. The next day we took another vacation – this one 5 minutes
We were back at the Town Park! The kids were laughing and swimming with their friends and I was sitting in my beach from home.
chair reading a magazine. Oh well, it wasn’t the ocean but at least I was beginning to get the tan I never got on the beach in Wildwood. I guess sometimes the best vacations are the ones just around the corner. Enjoy the rest of your summer…..have fun, be safe and stay cool! I’ll talk to you soon. I remember packing the cooler with sandwiches, fruits and cold drinks and the beach bags with towels and snacks. I’d lather up their little bodies with sunscreen and off we went to attend swimming and diving lessons. Afterwards, the kids swam, did arts and crafts and ran around the park playing with school and neighborhood friends. Like clockwork, we’d take our daily walk over to the concession stand for ice cream. I wasn’t worried about the calorie intake …..after all…..I was sporting my, “Look 10 Lbs. Thinner Instantly” bathing suit! It was great being in Bethlehem because the “livin’ was easy” at the Town Park. Summers usually included a family vacation away from home. One that stands out in my mind was a trip we took to Wildwood, New Jersey. The kids were 7 and 4. If I had known how vacations with small children can age you……I never would have left the town park! I stayed up late the night before doing laundry and packing the car. The next day I drove down the Jersey Turnpike with both kids in the back seat instigating each other anyway they could imagine. If I had a dollar for every time I was asked, “Are we there yet?”, I would be retired, sitting on a beach sipping a fruity 26 AUGUST 2010

Find out what your pet’s doctor is really thinking Though annual visits to your cat or dog’s vet are essential for maintaining their health and well-being, there are many more things you should be doing for pets in order to keep them in tip-top shape. And since your pets can’t tell you what they need, here’s the next best thing: Here is the inside scoop what vets think, wish and disapprove of during your appointments. Read on to find out how you can boost your pet’s health and make your trips to the vet easier and more productive. 1. Your pet isn’t “extra-fluffy” or “big-boned.” Over 40 percent of pets in the U.S. are overweight. Obesity in pets can cause a number of health problems from heart disease to diabetes. Though ideal weights vary within breeds, there are general indicators of an overweight pet, including not being able to feel their ribs, seeing a pooch in their abdomen from the side looking more like a sausage than an hourglass when viewed from above. After noting these factors, consult your vet to figure out if your pet needs to be put on a weight loss plan. 2. Veterinarians are available for consultation— consider sitting down with us before you buy or adopt a pet. Caring for a pet is a big decision and one that you should put a lot of thought into. Ask your vet to talk to potential pet owners about their work schedule and family life to ensure they have adequate time to care for a cat or dog. Vets can inform potential owners of the varying needs of different types of pets; some breeds have more exercise and training and even medical problems than others. It’s crucial for pet owners to understand they must budget beyond the initial purchase of the pet, especially for veterinary care. 3. Correctly reporting your pet’s symptoms to us is essential. A good percentage of our diagnosis can be made based on getting a good history and getting the correct information from owners. “There are differences between vomiting and regurgitation, upper respiratory coughing and lung coughing, pain and anxiety, etc. Take careful notes when you notice unusual behavior in your pet and don’t try to diagnose them yourself. 4. Just because your pet stays indoors or in your yard doesn’t mean that it shouldn’t wear a collar or be microchipped. There is no reason that your pet should be without ID .Disasters can happen at any time. A pet without identification has a lesser chance of being reunited with its owner. 5. Spaying and neutering pets is better for their overall health. Cats who are spayed before six months of age are 92 percent less likely to develop breast cancer, which is highly malignant in cats. Not
www.canterburyvet.com 88 Delaware Ave, Delmar NY 12054 + 439-2700 to mention that approximately 4 million dogs and cats are euthanized each year simply because there are not enough homes for them. 6. We wish that you’d regularly brush your pet’s teeth. Ensuring your pet has good dental hygeine is essential for their health and well-being. Potentially harmful bacteria live in the gums of your pet’s mouth and can enter their bloodstream, leading to infection. Other common problems that stem from poor dental care include other infections and rotten teeth. So get brushing! A few minutes a day will save you time and money down the road. 7. Prepare your pets for a visit to the vet. A trip to the vet can be a stressful experience for dogs and cats, but there are a few things that you can do to make the visit easier on everyone. Pets that have been exercised prior to their vet visit are less stressed, and the visit is more pleasant for them, the owner and the veterinarian. Pets afraid of the vet come in for social visits and treats until they feel comfortable enough for their actual checkup. 8. Dogs and cats aren’t small people or kids. Just because medications may be safe for adults or children, doesn’t mean they are safe for pets. Even though many human medications are used in veterinary medicine, the dosing is often quite different and many human medications are very toxic to dogs and cats. Never give anything to your pet without asking your vet first, no matter how safe it might seem.
9. The type and frequency of vaccinations needed depends on your pet—there’s no standard formula. Vaccine protocols have changed dramatically over the years. The vaccines that a pet needs are based on lifestyle, exposure and life stage. A puppy or kitten needs a series of vaccines to help establish immunity. Older pets need periodic boosters. How frequently your pet needs these immunizations should be a decision made between you and your vet. 10. We wish you’d call us for medical advice. Calling our office is free. If you’re concerned about your pet’s heath, call as soon as you notice the problem. Don’t ask the dog walker or the groomer or your neighbor – unless they are a vet. We are always here and we went into this profession to help pets and their owners

THE
Itching to have some outdoor fun this summer?
Beware of Poison Ivy! Prepared by Matthew VanKampen, Pharm.D. Candidate, Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences (ACPHS). Edited by Jennifer Cerulli, Pharm.D. Associate Professor (ACPHS) and Pharmacist, Four Corners Pharmacy
What is Poison Ivy? Poison ivy refers both to a plant common throughout the United States and the itchy rash (allergic dermatitis) that it causes. More than four out of five people are sensitive to urushiol, a resin found in the oily sap produced by the poison ivy plant. There’s an old saying, “Leaves of three? Let it be!” Poison ivy (Toxicodendron radicans) can grow as a low ground cover or climbing vine, the shiny leaves are in groups of three with red stems.
Calamine lotion, a protectant, will aid in drying weeping areas while providing some relief of itching. It can be used in all ages of children and adults. There are many products on the pharmacy shelf specifically targeted for poison ivy which contain combinations of these and other ingredients. Be sure to ask your Four Corners Pharmacist or your physician what product is right for the condition of your rash. There are many products that should not be used for poison ivy rashes (topical antihistamines, antibiotics and anesthetics) or are limited to certain age groups. Should I go to the doctor? You should contact you doctor if itching is not adequately controlled with over the counter products, if your rash has lasted more than two weeks or covers more than a quarter of your body. If you have rash on your face, eyelids or genital area, or if you have pus, yellowish discharge or swelling in the affected areas, contact your doctor.
How do you get Poison Ivy and what are the symptoms? The poison ivy rash is caused by contact between the sap of the plant and the skin, either from direct contact or transferred from an object, person or animal. The rash occurs where the sap contacts the skin and is characterized by itching, redness, bumps and fluid filled blisters. Itching usually appears soon after contact with the rash developing within about forty-eight hours. Symptoms range from mild to severe depending on individual sensitivity. Smoke from burning poison ivy will also readily spread the urushiol. What to do if contact with poison ivy is suspected… If you suspect that you’ve come into contact with poison ivy, wash any exposed skin with warm soapy water to remove the sap as soon as possible (most of the oil is absorbed in 30 minutes). A nailbrush can be used to clean under fingernails to prevent spreading the urushiol. Wash any clothing, objects or pets that may have come into contact with the plant. Once the sap has been removed from the skin and all objects, the rash is not contagious. Technu and Zanfel are specifically designed to cleanse the sap from the skin without the use of water. They are available through many pharmacies are popular with hikers and campers. I’ve got the rash, what now? A poison ivy rash will usually clear up in two or three weeks regardless of treatment. The worst symptoms generally occur in the first week after exposure. Treatment is targeted at reducing discomfort, drying weeping lesions and preventing infection. Keep the rash clean by washing gently (scrubbing can aggravate symptoms) with warm water and mild soap to prevent infection. Lukewarm soap-less showers or baths and/or cool compresses can help control the itching. If these measures don’t provide relief many over the counter options are available. Oatmeal bath/soak products can help cleanse and soothe. Hydrocortisone cream or ointment applied sparingly up to four times a day reduces the itching. 30 AUGUST 2010
I enjoy hiking, camping, gardening etc., how can I avoid getting poison ivy? The easiest way to avoid getting poison ivy is avoidance; learn how to identify the plant through a field guide or other such resources (a picture is worth a thousand words!) and the areas where it’s common. For people who are either particularly sensitive or can’t avoid areas with the plant, an FDA approved preventative lotion called “Ivyblock” is available from pharmacies and stores dealing with camping and outdoor goods. It must be applied at least 15 minutes prior to exposure and works in about half of users. It is only recommended for those over 6 years of age. For more information: 1.Plake KS, Darbishire PL. Fat Burning Exercise: How To Exercise For 15mins And Burn Fat For 36hrs Afterwards! If you are used to traditional cardio labelled LSD (long slow distance), chances are you have heard of but may never have tried techniques such as Fartlek and interval training. Cardiovascular exercise in all its forms are indeed great for building endurance and to burn off energy and calories, but once you stop, so does the burn. There is no additional effect to keep your system blast through its fat stores while you are standing still. Now wouldn’t it be better if we could burn the energy right there and the spot AND increase our fat burning abilities for up to 36h? Indeed it would, and it is possible - this is how. Fartlek and interval training is essentially the same thing; burst training. It means that you go hard, I mean flat out (80-90% of max) for a short burst and then you go slowly again. Most often you don’t stop, you just go considerably slower, allowing your body to relax. In Fartlek you burst when you feel like it, and when you feel like recovery, you recover until you are ready to go again. Interval training is a step up and you will have set work and rest ratios to work with. Needless to say, Fartlek is the introductory level to burst training and here is how to implement it. Choose your cardio activity, pick a distance or a time and decide on how many burst you will complete in your session. The rest is easy, let’s say you decided on five bursts, before you’ve finished your distance or worked for the set amount of time, you will have bursted into 80-90% of your max five times. You burst until you can’t keep the intensity up, you may even set a time or a distance and then you recover. Recovery for running would be a jog or a walk and for cycling it would be slower pedal at less resistance. Interval training obviously has an even greater effect on the energy spent and the fat burning effects after your workout, but it makes sense to progress into it and not step in there straight away depending on what your fitness background is. For intervals an easy way to get started is to do 30 seconds hard and 30 seconds slow - work towards a total of 10-20 minutes of total work. This burst training creates something called an oxygen deficit demand in your body, which will boost your fat burning abilities for up to 36 h. Yes, that’s while you are resting but also while you are doing other kinds of activities. I wouldn’t recommend more than 2-3 sessions like these spread out over the weak, and probably 1-2if you are a beginner. But hey, that’s what I call effective. And remember, if you want to decrease the impact due to join problems or what not, choose equipment with minimal impact like a stationary bike, cross-trainer or a rowing machine. Good luck and enjoy shorter workouts and much greater rewards! Nancy L. Stroke risk temporarily increases for an hour after drinking alcohol Call it the not-so-happy hour. The risk of stroke appears to double in the hour after consuming just one drink — be it wine, beer or hard liquor — according to a small multi-center study reported in Stroke: Journal of the American Heart Association. “The impact of alcohol on your risk of ischemic stroke appears to depend on how much and how often you drink,” said Murray A. Mittleman, M.D., Dr.P.H., senior author of the Stroke Onset Study (SOS) and director of the Cardiovascular Epidemiology Research Unit at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in the Harvard Medical School in Boston, Mass. Prior to the SOS, researchers didn’t know if alcohol consumption had an immediate impact on ischemic stroke (caused by a blood clot in a vessel in or leading to the brain), although modest alcohol use (less than two drinks per day) may potentially lower risk in the long term. Researchers interviewed 390 ischemic stroke patients (209 men, 181 women) about three days after their stroke regarding many aspects of their lives. Patients were excluded if the stroke seriously impaired their ability to speak or if they weren’t well enough to participate. Fourteen patients had consumed alcohol within one hour of stroke onset.
A more definitive answer would require a controlled study in which some people are randomly selected to consume alcohol while others don’t, he said. The findings may not apply to patients with severe stroke. Stroke is the No. 3 killer and a leading cause of long-term major disability in the United States, according to American Heart Association statistics. The American Heart Association recommends that if you drink alcohol, do so in moderation. This means no more than two drinks per day for men and one drink per day for women. (A drink is one 12-ounce beer, 4 ounces of wine, 1.5 ounces of 80-proof spirits, or 1 ounce of 100-proof spirits.) High intakes can be associated with serious adverse effects and may increase alcoholism, high blood pressure, obesity, stroke, breast cancer, suicide and accidents. Consult your doctor on the benefits and risks of consuming alcohol in moderation. For information about this and other heart-related topics, visit heart.org.
Amanda Geiger bought these sunglasses to wear on spring break. She wore them only once before she was killed by a drunk driver.
Compared with times when alcohol wasn’t being used, the relative risk of stroke after alcohol consumption was: • 2.3 times higher in the first hour; • 1.6 times higher in the second hour; and • 30 percent lower than baseline after 24 hours. The patterns remained the same whether participants had consumed wine, beer or distilled spirits. When the researchers eliminated patients who had been exposed to other potential triggers (such as exercising vigorously or drinking a caffeinated beverage) just prior to their strokes, the alcohol connection didn’t change. Only one participant had consumed more than two drinks in the hour preceding the stroke, and removing that data didn’t alter the pattern.
Friends Don’t Let Friends Drive Drunk.
Just after drinking, blood pressure rises and blood platelets become stickier, which may increase the possibility of a clot forming. However, consistent use of small amounts of alcohol is associated with beneficial changes in blood lipids and more flexible blood vessels, which may reduce risk overall. “At this point we don’t have enough evidence to say that people who don’t drink should start, or that people who drink small amounts — on the order of one drink a day — should stop,” Mittleman said. 38 AUGUST 2010
“The evidence on heavy drinking is consistent: Both in the long and short term it raises stroke risk,” Mittleman said. “But we’re finding it’s more complicated with light to moderate drinking. It is possible that the transiently increased stroke risk from moderate alcohol consumption may be outweighed by the longer term health benefits.”

I am running the NYC marathon this fall as part of the Boomer Esiason Foundation (BEF), which supports fundraising for Cystic Fibrosis (CF) research. Our family is good friends with someone who has lived with this disease for close to the past 20 years. She is a wonderful young woman, and her family has been there and supported her over the years. I am proud to know them. Great strides have been made to combat this disease, and its effects on those who live with it, but as we all know this takes money, lots of it. I hope to offer something towards that goal. I promise to do my best fo this race, and I ask for your support. I know it is never a good time to ask for money, but if you trust my judgment, then trust me that this is for a great purpose. My donation page address is listed below. If you can, then do.

Trish’s Pix from Tattered Pages Used Books
Summer Salutations Readers… So…what are you reading during these steamy, hot summer days? Reading is a very personal past-time… a matter of personal taste! Just as our eating habits change with the seasons…so may our summer reading menu. Beach reads… poolside fare…vacation reading…summer required reading lists…. “too many re-runs on TV” reading…are often lighter, faster paced, action packed, thrilling or lazy, lilting nostalgic reads of times and places long ago. Summer always offered an opportunity for me as a teacher more time to read for pleasure. While raising my boys in the suburbs of Philadelphia, we headed to our town pool with a bag of swim gear, sunscreen, food, drink and books. The Library was across a residential street from the pool. A great place for rainy days and air-conditioned breaks from those humid, lazy days of August; the library was a weekly stop in our lives. Swim team practice started at 10 am and we often stayed poolside until 5pm or later on swim meet days. My sons and I spent most weekdays at the pool, because we lived on a busy road and getting to friends’ houses was not an easy or safe journey for my boys. Everyone we knew went to the pool, most were on swim team as well. Being a teacher, my friends always requested help with their child’s summer reading fare. So, with the Library close by, and a bag full of books of our own, I became the Summer Reading Lady at Glenside Pool. Over time, my role expanded not only to swim team coach for the 6yr old and unders, but book club advisor to the “pool Moms” and lifeguards. With our sun chairs and towels staked out on our prime grass spot (one where we could keep eye on our kids easily) that provided both sun and shade…we would share our latest books. It was here that we first discovered author James Patterson in Along Came a Spider, Robert Ludlum’s Bourne series, Fannie Flagg’s, Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Café, John Grisham’s, The Client, and our suspense/horror/fright/ writers: Stephen King, Dean Koontz, Anne Rice, Ann Rule and John Saul. What can I say…from ’85-’93…we Moms were into suspense, intrigue and horror. These were our “salad” days without cable TV or money for the movies or VHS rentals; books were our getaways…but they also connected us. I will never forget the time one of the “moms” suggested that we set page limits so that no one read ahead! We were currently reading Stephen King, real page turners (probably It or Needful Things). Jane was a young mom with five children, and her husband was on the road 3 days a week. Her days were full and reading these books at night, well…she often deferred to sleep instead of reading once the last child was tucked in ( also, some of the scarier reads were best read with another adult

around.) We all pitched in to give Jane reading time at the pool and swam with her clan and kept them from Mommy as she had her private time to read. I look back at those summers with such fondness for the friendships made and the books read. I moved from Glenside, PA to Glenmont, NY in late 1993 and now swim, whenever I get the chance, at the Bethlehem Town Pool. My swim bag contains goggles, swim fins, snack, drink and my latest book! As I enter the pool I am greeted by lifeguards that are reading at the entrance desk. I am often greeted by Chelsea, who has been diligently reading Ken Follett’s “Pillars of the Earth” an ambitious read! There is a rack of paperbacks available from Bethlehem Library for patrons! It is always being replenished! I delight to see so many people reading under the trees, in their chairs, on their blankets…reminiscent of those long ago summer days at the Glenside Pool. From recent conversations with several customers over their “summer reads”: Mary said that during these sweltering summer days she loves retreating to her cool cave (her family room in her basement) with ice tea and a thriller. Her latest choices…books by Kay Hooper, Iris Johansen and Mariah Stewart. Marge’s summer has consisted of air conditioning and thrillers by Karen Rose and Jeffrey Deaver. A young Mom recently purchased a bag filled with poetry, short stories, gardening books and a new vegetarian cookbook to prepare her garden harvest! Another came in looking for “anything good” to read on her vacation. She was a “book club” member tired of these “best sellers that take you think”! She wanted light, easy, fluff and was looking for suggestions. Stacey, heading to the Bahamas, asked me to help find her a new author, a real page turner. I introduced her to Tess Gerritsen. (I just finished “The Sinner” by Gerritsen…at the pool….featuring crime team Rizzoli and Isles…recent novel as TV series) Another bookstore friend, Joan, filled her arms with quite the eclectic selection from biographies to historical fiction. Patrick grabbed two books by David McCullough from our History section. Jeff found two more Star Trek books from Sci-Fi for his collection. The “teacher in me” loves helping young readers with their summer reading selections, helping them to experience new authors, adventures, and experiences …the ever present “teacher” in me…evoking the Summer Reading Lady of days gone by! So, when looking for your next summer reading choice…why not stop into Tattered Pages Used Books in Glenmont? With over 18,000 books all reduced 20-60% off original publisher’s prices, let us help you find your next summer read! Until next month….Happy Reading. -Contribute to your 401(k). Since many people don’t have unlimited funds available to save for retirement and college, it’s important to get the most mileage possible from the money invested. Try to utilize the tax-advantaged retirement accounts available to you. For starters, contribute as much as you can afford to your 401(k) or other employer-sponsored retirement plan. Not only can your earnings grow on a taxdeferred basis, but your contributions are generally made with pretax dollars, so the more you contribute, the lower your annual taxable income — which, in turn, could give you more disposable income to invest for college. In 2010, you can contribute up to $16,500 to your 401(k), or $22,000 if you’re 50 or older. -Fund your IRA. Depending on your income level, your contributions to a traditional IRA may also lower your taxable income, again potentially freeing up resources for college. Plus, your earnings can grow tax deferred. If you qualify for a Roth IRA, your contributions are not tax-deductible, but your earnings grow tax free. Withdrawals are also taxfree, provided you’ve held your account at least five years and you don’t start taking withdrawals until you’re at least age 59½. Also, you can withdraw Roth IRA contributions without paying taxes (since you’ve already been taxed on this money), so you could use these funds, if necessary, to help pay for college costs, although ideally you’d like to leave your account untouched until you retire. If eligible, you can contribute up to $5,000 to your traditional or Roth IRA in 2010, or $6,000 if you’re 50 or older. -Open a 529 college savings plan. Contributions to a 529 plan are made with after-tax dollars. However, when you contribute to a 529 plan, your earnings grow tax free. Withdrawals are also tax-free, provided they are used for qualified higher education expenses. (Withdrawals for expenses other than qualified higher education expenditures may be subject to federal and state taxes plus a 10% penalty.) Furthermore, 529 plan contributions may be eligible for a state tax deduction or credit in certain states for residents who participate in their own state’s plan. Also, the lifetime contribution limits for 529 plans are quite generous, and you can gift $13,000 per year, per beneficiary, without incurring gift taxes. To make sure you understand the tax ramifications of a 529 plan, you’ll want to consult with your tax advisor. It may not be easy to put away as much as we’d like for retirement and college. But you do have some attractive savings and investment options. Don’t delay, because when saving for any goal, time is a great ally.

What if I Don’t Like Sports?
want to play on a competitive team. For instance, you might play softball or volleyball, just for fun, at a summer picnic.
Not everyone likes organized sports or team sports. If this sounds like you, don’t sweat it. We’re going to talk about what keeps some kids from liking sports. With a few changes, you might find out that there is a sport out there that you could like. But if not, we’ll suggest other fun ways to stay active.
A Bad Sports Experience
Learning About Sports Sometimes, kids feel that they don’t like sports because they may not understand how to play them or they haven’t had much practice doing them. Sports can seem complicated because of all the rules and special equipment. Even the fields and courts they are played on come in different shapes and sizes and have confusinglooking lines drawn on them. People spend many years learning about favorite sports and practicing how to do them well. So don’t feel bad if you don’t know the difference between a “corner kick” and a “goal kick” in soccer. If you want to learn more about a sport, you might ask your mom or dad about camps or programs that introduce kids to new sports. These may be better than just joining a team that starts playing games right away without much explaining first. Gym class and intramural programs at school also can be a way to try new sports with a mix of kids. Another way to learn about a sport is to watch instructional videos or DVDs or check out library books that explain the rules and offer suggestions for kids learning to play them. If you have an older friend or family member who’s good at a sport, you might ask him or her to help you practice. Some sports are just good to understand, even if you never
Kelly Kleeners
Some kids don’t like organized sports because they were once on a team and they didn’t have fun. Maybe all of the other kids seemed to know what they were doing and you felt unsure. Or maybe you didn’t like the pressure of competing against other teams, where you know one team is going to win and the other is going to lose. Competition can bring out some intense emotions. Sometimes, kids on a team get so fired up about winning that they may yell or get upset at a player who makes a mistake. This can be stressful - especially if it’s you who made a mistake! But everybody makes mistakes sometimes and no one should tease you for it. If they do, it’s a good idea to talk with the coach or your mom or dad. Sometimes kids need to be reminded about being understanding and respectful to each other. Parents and coaches also can get upset about a game situation and put too much pressure on kids. Kids might feel confused and stressed out during games if they’re not quite sure what they should be doing. But team sports also can be a great experience. Kids get to improve their skills and feel that team spirit as they work together toward a common goal. If you’ve had a bad experience with a team, maybe it’s time to try a new sport or a new league. Some leagues and programs emphasize skill building over competition - and some leagues don’t even keep score!

“We’ll make your Sad House a Happy Home!â€? There are dozens of sports, so you might not have found the one for you yet. Lots of kids try soccer and baseball. But what if your best sport is going to be volleyball, cheerleading, or gymnastics? You’ll have to try it and find out. Some kids are naturally graceful. Others are strong. And still others have great aim. Different sports require different skills, so you’ll want to try different sports to find one that suits you. Some activities you might not think of as sports, such as karate or cheerleading, but they are great for staying active. If you don’t like being on a team that much, you might consider individual sports. An individual sport means a kid does the sport on his or her own. You can do these sports competitively or just for the fun of doing them. Here’s a list of some individual sports: •swimming •diving •running •ice skating •wrestling •gymnastics •golf •tennis •skateboarding •in-line skating •biking •martial arts •bowling
a great form of exercise and exercise keeps your body healthy. We’ve already talked about how there are many sports to choose from, but there’s even more good news: There are many other nonsport activities that can give you exercise and keep you active. Here are just a few: •playing at a playground •raking leaves •jumping rope •dancing around your bedroom •walking your dog •cleaning your room •watering the garden •washing the car •making a snowperson You also might find that by limiting certain activities - like watching TV and playing computer games - you’ll just naturally be more active. So, no, you don’t have to play a sport, but you might still find one you like. The most important thing is to be an active kid. And you have a world of activities to choose from. Somewhere out there is a special one that’s just right for you.
