Trish Pix Tattered Pages Used Books
“Your mind is your own personal library of what you have read in life!” Patricia Eldridge ~ owner of Tattered Pages New & Used Books
founding vendor at the Delmar Farmer’s Market at the Bethlehem Middle School on Saturdays. She is taking a break from selling in the winter market and will be here with her incredible inventory of sterling silver earrings featuring Swavorski crystals and high end beads. Most selling for $10, they are often one of a kind, strikingly beautiful earrings for women of all ages. They are my earrings of choice to wear most days. She will also be selling her unique wine glass charms. Mark your calendar! I have had time to read a bit more (while in the hospital, nursing home, and when doing home care for my Dad before he fell) and would like to share some books and authors for consideration. S.J. Watson’s “Before I Go to Sleep” was a fascinating tale of a woman who awakens to realize she has lost over 20 years of her life. Each morning it is as if her life has been reset until she receives a phone call from her doctor who directs her to a shoe box in her closet which contains her journal. He is working with her regarding this unique form of amnesia. Her patient, supportive husband attempts to help her piece her life together each and every morning. But as her memory begins to return, why does she dream of conflicting events and not remember what he tells her every day? A mystery is entangled in this page turner and keeps you guessing as the fog lifts and danger ensues! Recently released as a movie with Nicole Kidman, we all know that the book is always better than the movie. Staying with movie/book connection: I just re-read “Catching Fire” & “Mockingjay” by Suzanne Collins (book 2 & 3 of the Hunger Games), I enjoyed the re-read and referred to the actors as the characters in the book. The movies were a wonderful adaptation of the books! I read “The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time” by Mark Haddon, a book which lends incredible insight into the mind of an autistic child as he writes a journal of his daily life and the decision to solve a series of mysteries. Having been an educator, I found this book fascinating! It provided a plausible explanation of the mannerisms, reactions and behavior of the unexplainable actions of a brain that perceives differently! I opened with a quote regarding our mind as our own personal library. What we read, when we read and why we read is all highly personal. As I have asked before, who decides what you read? What drives you towards that author, that genre? Only you can answer that and I would love to connect you to just that right book. I would like to suggest a new resolution…stop by Tattered Pages…support a locally owned small business, check out what I have to offer, avoid the malls, the big box stores and if you have a trade credit account, all of your books will be an additional 22% off of our already reduced prices! As our Holiday Season & New Year approaches, I wish you peace, happiness, good health and a few good books! Bless you all…with sincerest wishes for a Shiny, Healthy New Year!
Greetings my fellow readers, I feel it necessary to explain why there was no article, from me, in last month’s Our Towne. I appreciate the calls and questions as to “why?” My Darlin’ 85 yr. old Dad had recently fallen & broken his hip in late September. He deals with Parkinson’s every day and since his fall, I have been involved in many aspects of his care & placement. I was also dealing with upper respiratory complications and the deadline date escaped me! My Dad is currently in a rehab and we are trying to keep “normalcy” as we pursue this next chapter in all of our lives. I have had to close the store in the past 2 months on several occasions to attend to emergencies and many needs because I am his primary health proxy. I appreciate your understanding that as a one woman (and one adorable puppy) operation, I have to make choices where family comes first. I have had to put signs on the door explaining early store closure, and due to this, have lost significant business since September. So, as December rapidly approaches and gift shopping time is upon all of us, I appeal that you consider Tattered Pages for one of your gift shopping stops and would appreciate your continued support! There are over 19,000 books here, many in new to next to new condition. I have a lovely selection of books that are in gift giving quality. All of the books are reduced in price between 20-60% off original prices. I also sell gift certificates. My children’s section and Romance section Christmas, Winter & Holiday books are out. I have a wonderful selection of Christmas preparation books as well as Holiday stories & would hope that you might come to see what I have in store for you. Here’s a great gift idea. Make a “theme” basket or gift bag; Ex.: sports theme book in with sports items, toys to match the characters in the children’s book, cookbook with cooking items! I have done this in the past and it really personalizes the gift! Imagine a Pasta bowl, pasta spoon, pasta, garlic, cheese, olive oil, pot holder, and a cookbook of pasta dishes; Cookie cookbook with ingredients, rolling pin, cookie cutters; Dog training book, with dog toys, dog biscuits! You get the idea. I am always available for help to match you up with just the right book. I just recently acquired 25 beautiful hardcover Charles Dickens books in my literature section along with Little House on the Prairie set, Shakespeare and a dozen Large Print “Murder She Wrote Novels!” Remember you can e-mail, contact me on Facebook or call me with your requests and I will search for you Trish, Linda & Seamus and hold your books until you can come and get them. I also will order hard to find books for you and you never, ever pay full price here! Then
& Now The Bank of Bethlehem By Susan E. Leath The Bank of Bethlehem is seen here in 1928. The prominent box on the left side of the building is probably part of the bank’s burglar alarm system. Such alarm bells could be triggered from a switch inside the vault and at the teller windows. The loud alarm could probably wake the whole neighborhood.
The Bank of Bethlehem was prominent in the Delmar community for 9 years. Charted by New York State in September 1927, the bank issued 500 shares at $150 per share. They promptly sold out. Horace B. Casey was president of the bank along with directors LeRoy Arnold, Daniel A. Bennett, William Gillespie, John Herber, Thomas Holmes, Samuel Nuttal and Edward J. Slingerland. Shortly after organizing, plans for the bank building were created by architect Galen H. Nichols and construction begun by the C.V. Soule Company of Delmar. Due to mild winter weather, construction was completed quickly and the bank opened for business on Monday March 26, 1928. The cashier was Stanley C. Cornell, teller Earl Hevenog, stenographer Lucille A. Robinson and David Keefe janitor.
A picture of the Tewksbury Rocking Cradle used in a February 1930 advertisement for the Bank of Bethlehem. Other ads featured old fashioned ice skating, spinning wheels and George Washington’s horse drawn coach.

During 1929 and 30 the bank ran a series of charming historic themed ads in the Altamont Enterprise. One featured a mechanized Tewksbury Rocking Cradle asking potential customers “Are you awake to the marked influence a Time Deposit account has upon the future of your child? …One dollar opens an account at the Bank of Bethlehem.” Annually, the bank published a statement of condition listing resources (approaching one million dollars in 1936) and liabilities. This attested to the bank’s stability and was important reassurance during these Depression Era years. Recall that the Great Crash happened September 4, 1929. The Bank of Bethlehem was acquired by the National Commercial Bank & Trust Company in 1937. Stockholders received $225 per share. Henry Keelan, cashier, became the branch manager. National Commercial traces its history back to 1825 when it was charted by Governor Dewitt Clinton as the Commercial Bank of Albany. It reorganized in 1865 as the National Commercial Bank of Albany and in 1979 adopted the name Key Bank. In 1974, Key Bank moved to its current location at the corner of Delaware and Kenwood Avenue. Walking into today’s TD Bank, one sees modern banking fixtures with the expected teller counter, vault and desks. One needs to use imagination to guess at the decorative wood work and high tin ceilings that probably existed in 1928. Long gone is the alcove room for women patrons with its writing facility and telephone. Gone is the upstairs director’s room (now a kitchen) and the downstairs ballroom (now a storage room, although the 1960s era chandeliers still hang there.) Hidden behind the drop ceiling is the
