Have you driven along Krumkill Road in North Bethlehem and wondered about this rather shabby church building? Did you know it is considered the oldest church building in town?

November 3, 1835 marks the date when the First Presbyterian Church of Bethlehem was organized. The church had 53 members and their first pastor was the Rev. William P. Davis.

The congregation set to work building their first house of worship that same year at a cost of $1,800. It’s classic Greek Revival style was popular in the 1830s and it is said that the Delmar Reformed Church (built in 1846) was patterned after it.

The Rev. Davis left the church in 1841 and published a well-received book called The Pastor’s Farewell. According to an article in the Schenectady Cabinet, the “neat volume of 225 pages” contains 11 discourses that were delivered “in view of a dissolution of the author’s pastoral relation with the First Presbyterian Church in Bethlehem.” The article quotes the Boston Record as saying the discourses are “evangelical in doctrine and spirit, easy and flowing in their style, direct and pungent in their appeals to the heart and conscience, and every way fitted to produce a happy impression on the reader.” Rev. Davis went on to serve for many years at the Reformed Church of the Helderbergs.

The first elders of the church were Jonathan E. Walley, John R. Bullock and Volkert V. Bullock.

These names show up on early maps of the area with several Walley farms along New Scotland Road and a Bullock family farm on today’s Blessing Road.

One of the markers still on the church property remembers “Our Lizzie” (Lizzie May Faulkner) who died in 1881 at age 18 months. The finger pointing up symbolized the “hope of heaven.”

Today, the original church parsonage is hidden behind a row of hedges across Krumkill Road from the church.

It is also of a Greek Revival Style and was built about the same time as the church, perhaps for the first pastor, Rev. William P. Davis who served from 1835 to 1841 or the second Rev. Joseph Rosekrans who served from 1843 to 1849. It is now a private residence. p. 14

During the pastorship of the Rev. David Heron (pastor from 1870 to 1880) the Albany Daily News in their January 15, 1880 issue reported that the parsonage of the church had been burglarized and a wagon load of goods stolen, including the communion service. The offenders were soon appended due to the diligence of Detectives Malone, Dwyer and Anderson.

Fellowship. When he purchased the building, it had been vacant for many years. The congregation has spent their efforts on the interior space, and has intentions to tackle the exterior, but those kinds of repairs are expensive for a small congregation to tackle.

Despite its exterior appearance, perhaps those early Presbyterians would appreciate knowing that an active Christian church still uses the sanctuary they built over 180 years ago.

In the background of this undated view of the church, one can see the District 14 one room school building.

The church anchored the small community of North Bethlehem. The Beers 1866 map notes the nearby District 14 school house and a few doors down from that is a blacksmith shop. At one time the church was surrounded by the church graveyard. Local families represented include the Jacobsons, Holmes and Olivers.

One wonders about the story of husband and wife Sarah and David Klink who died within months of each other in 1842, both just 23 years of age.

The Presbyterian Church was active at least through the late 1920s. Their church records are archived with the Presbyterian Church Historical Society in Philadelphia. A field trip is in order to determine exactly when they closed their doors.

It is hard enough for us to show self control during this eating and celebrating frenzy, so here is some great advice to keep you and your pet safe and happy this holiday season. Here are some of the top holiday safety tips: 1.Packing on the pounds is a holiday tradition for most of us, but it can be just as dangerous for our animals as it can be for us.. Even though it’s only once a year, an abrupt change in diet can not only lead to obesity but some digestive issues such as pancreatitis and diarrhea. Feed your pet their normal pet food and refrain from indulging them with table scraps!

2. Pets thrive on routine. Make sure your holiday guests understand your pet's "house rules" when it comes to play time, treats, jumping, getting on counter and table scraps. Help them to keep your pet mindful of its training and good manners.

3. Secure your trash! Keep your trash cans out of reach of your animals, or better yet, take it out right after you’re done with it. Bones aren’t the only danger; even a vegetarian house wants to keep an eye out; onions and chocolate can do just as much damage!

4. Be careful with menorahs and candles. Do not leave them unattended as a wayward tail can knock them down and potentially cause a fire.

And remember, shards from broken glass ornaments can injure paws, mouths and other parts of the body.

Dear Neighbor, Since 1942, the purpose of the Bethlehem Community Fund has been to provide financial assistance for emergency needs of residents of the Town of Bethlehem and students of Bethlehem Central School District, when such needs are not covered by other agencies or sources. Our school personnel, local clergy, Bethlehem Senior Services & other providers make most of the requests for assistance.

Funds are used for short-term emergency needs like medical expenses, utility or insurance bill assistance, auto/home repair bills, educational supplies and unreimbursable school related expenses or personal emergencies except in extenuating circumstances which will require additional details and justification.

This winter, the Bethlehem Community Fund is looking at a record number of families needing assistance. Financial responsibilities and human service needs in our schools and community increase during this time of year. Our goal of $30,000 will enable us to meet many of the needs of our Bethlehem neighbors throughout the year.

Hopefully, by the time you read this all will be back to normal and my shop will be back on regular hours, for Heaven knows, the timing of this…well, enough said!

With the Holiday/Christmas season rapidly approaching may I suggest the idea of a gift certificate or on a more personal level making a gift bag or basket with a theme brings a wonderful level of personalization to your gift. Let your imagination guide you to what you could do with a great book in sports, cooking, fitness, mystery, romance etc. Just think what your golfer would think to have a great book by a golfing icon along with new golfing gloves, a box of tees and a hand towel or club cozies! For your budding chef, create a basket with cookbook, utensils and ingredients. I have several children’s cookbooks here on the shelves for a kid’s basket. How about a few “bodice ripper” romances, a box of chocolates, a mug, a scented candle & beverage of choice! There are several crafting books, instruction booklets for needlepoint, embroidery, quilting, crocheting etc. Recently added to the inventory are books in history, science, military, art & music. Remember that all of our books start at a reduced price due to the fact that they were gently read by others before I acquired them. The children section has hundreds of books for all ages of children, most are in gift giving quality!

Another suggestion for personal gifts: handcrafted earrings by founding Delmar Market Craftswoman, Dana Flint! Dana will be hosting a jewelry/gift extravaganza right here in the shop on December 9 and 16th from 11-4pm.

On sale will be hundreds of sterling wire earrings, each unique and featuring high end beads, Swarovski crystals in various sizes, styles and design. She will also be carrying handpoured scented mini-mason jar candles, necklaces and much more. Starting at under $10 you will certainly find many treasures. In regards to books, local coach and author Jesse Braverman will be here in the shop for another book signing of his newly published memoir, Comeback Coach on Wednesday, December 20th from 3-6pm. The book is also on sale here in the shop.

Because of the timing of Christmas Eve/Christmas and New Year’s Eve…the shop will only be closed on Christmas. If weather becomes a concern. I follow the Bethlehem School District snow day announcement. If it is too dangerous for the buses to run…I figure that you will not be on the roads either! I always post on Facebook, Tattered Pages, LLC any changes in shop hours. Just a reminder the normal store hours are Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday 10-5, Thursday 10-4, Friday 10-7, Sat. 102. As a small business, I truly appreciate your patronage and that you think of me first before heading out to other bookstores. If I don’t have it in stock, I will always do my best to try and procure it for you at the best price possible.

This past month, while recovering from cataract surgery, I found it difficult to read, which was devastating for me. I can now see distance beyond anything I could see when I was young! However, I am now dealing with wearing reading glasses and having cool blue ray reducing glasses on for computer work. Glare is really bothering me, but the Doc says that will continue to improve. I did read one book last month which I would recommend for those of you who like a good mystery suspense novel. “The Woman in Cabin 10” by Ruth Ware was a real page turner and kept me guessing throughout. Similar to “Girl on a Train” it involved a British reporter covering the maiden voyage of luxury cabin cruise heading off to Norway. Did she really witness a person being thrown overboard in the middle of the night? Was there really a woman in cabin 10 when no one was assigned to that room? I have heard from other readers that they enjoy the mysteries of Ruth Ware. This was my first and certainly will not be my last.

The Friendship Singers of Delmar, well-known local womens’ choral group, will open its 2017 Christmas concert series on Friday, December 1 at the First Reformed Church, 8 North Church Street, Schenectady, NY 12305, at 7 pm. Doors open at 6:45. In Delmar, our main performance will be at the Delmar Reformed Church, 386 Delaware Avenue, Delmar, NY 12054, at 7 pm on Wednesday, December 13. These two concerts are open to the public and free of charge. They’re part of our annual Christmas rounds of senior facilities and other venues. Some of our songs will be familiar, others not so well-known, but beauty, harmony and good humor will abound.

The Delmar Presbyterian Church, located at 585 Delaware Avenue, Delmar, NY (the intersection of Delaware Avenue and Cherry Avenue), is in the midst of an exciting landscaping project.

“New Views” is the culmination of a two-year study involving the entire congregation. The goal of this woods beautification project is to make “our church more welcoming with increased visibility and attractiveness. In the process of doing this we will also remove dead and leaning trees, old stumps, and other debris,” according to Gail Chase, a member of the Woods Beautification Committee.

Rev. Karen Pollan, pastor of Delmar Presbyterian Church, said “we are always looking at ways to be a part of the Bethlehem Community, and ‘New Views’ does that. Anyone travelling through the crossroads of Delaware and Cherry Avenues will now be able to see our church. More important, we want everyone to know that they are most welcome to visit us, to walk our new trails, and to sit and rest while enjoying the trees, flowers, birds, butterflies, and wildlife that inhabit our property.”

Additionally, the project will enhance access to the church’s unique state-of-the-art playground, available to everyone in the community, including children with disabilities.

The church has worked closely with the Town of Bethlehem and the State to ensure that everything is being done in accordance with laws and regulations. The church contracted with Weston and Sampson for landscape design services and with Peter Frueh to provide construction support.

In both design and construction, Chase says “our goal was to keep standing as many healthy trees as possible, and to create selective openings, windows if you will, for ‘New Views’ of Delmar Presbyterian Church.”

FINANCIAL FOCU$ Time to Review Your Investment Strategy for the Year

As the year draws to a close, it’s a good time to review your progress toward your financial goals. But on what areas should you focus your attention?

Of course, you may immediately think about whether your investments have done well. When evaluating the performance of their investments for a given year, many people mistakenly think their portfolios should have done just as well as a common market index, such as the Standard & Poor’s 500. But the S&P 500 is essentially a measure of large-company, domestic stocks, and your portfolio probably doesn’t look like that – nor should it, because it’s important to own an investment mix that aligns with your goals, risk tolerance and return objectives. It’s this return objective that you should evaluate over time – not the return of an arbitrary benchmark that isn’t personalized to your goals and risk tolerance.

Your return objective will likely evolve. If you are starting out in your career, you may need your portfolio to be oriented primarily toward growth, which means it may need to be more heavily weighted toward stocks. But if you are retiring in a few years, you may need a more balanced allocation between stocks and bonds, which can address your needs for growth and income.

So, assuming you have created a long-term investment strategy that has a target rate of return for each year, you can review your progress accordingly. If you matched or exceeded that rate this past year, you’re staying on track, but if your return fell short of your desired target, you may need to make some changes. Before doing so, though, you need to understand just why your return was lower than anticipated.

For example, if you owned some stocks that underperformed due to unusual circumstances – and even events such as Hurricanes Harvey and Irma can affect the stock prices of some companies – you may not need to be overly concerned, especially if the fundamentals of the stocks are still sound. On the other hand, if you own some investments that have underperformed for several years, you may need to consider selling them and using the proceeds to explore new investment opportunities.

Investment performance isn’t the only thing you should consider when looking at your financial picture over this past year. What changed in your life? Did you welcome a new child to your family? If so, you may need to respond by increasing your life insurance coverage or opening a college savings account. Did you or your spouse change jobs? You may now have access to a new employersponsored retirement account, such as a 401(k), so you’ll need to decide how much money to put into the various investments within this plan. And one change certainly happened this past year: You moved one year closer to retirement. By itself, this may cause you to re-evaluate how much risk you’re willing to tolerate in your investment portfolio, especially if you are within a few years of your planned retirement.

Whether it is the performance of your portfolio or changes in your life, you will find that you always have some reasons to look back at your investment and financial strategies for one year – and to look ahead at moves you can make for the next.

YMCA COMMUNITY UPDATE: Helping school kids, disaster victims & veterans

The Bethlehem YMCA is more than a gym; it is a leading charitable organization in our community. Just a few examples:

In September, the Y partnered with Town of Bethlehem Senior Services to collect 77 new school backpacks and filled them with school supplies to help children from needy families start the new school year right! Also in September, the YMCA held several special events and a raffle to raise $1,500 to help YMCAs in Florida and Texas respond to hurricane and flood victims.

Veterans Day was just a few weeks ago, but all year long the Bethlehem YMCA helps our heroes who served our country by providing $37,000 in total membership assistance from our Annual Campaign to show our gratitude for their service!

YMCA CHRISTMAS GIVING TREE Now that we are past Thanksgiving, we can look ahead to the many joys of the Christmas season. At the Bethlehem YMCA, we truly embrace the philosophy that it is better to give than to receive. That is why our lobby is graced with the Y’s Christmas Giving Tree!

This marvelous holiday tradition warms the hearts of those who donate gifts and gift cards and brings smiles to the faces of less fortunate children and families in Bethlehem.

The tree is decorated with ornaments handmade by children of YMCA members. On each ornament is written a small gift and some information about a child who otherwise may not have a present on Christmas morning. Last year more than 300 gifts brightened the holiday for many YMCA families.

YMCA members can take an ornament off the tree, purchase the gift listed on the ornament, bring it to the Y, and we will get it to the family in time for Christmas. We identify children and families by working with the Bethlehem School District, as well as recipients of YMCA scholarships from our Annual Campaign.

Please, next time you come to the Bethlehem YMCA, take just a moment in the lobby to look at the Giving Tree and consider taking an ornament home with you and donating a gift. Many families in Bethlehem are in need of help. With your spirit of giving, their holiday will be happier.

NEW Y TRAINING PROGRAMS FOR WINTER

Couch to 5k -- This supportive and motivating 10-week program is designed to prepare you - no matter your fitness level - to run or walk a 5K. The program is based on a jog/walk interval training. It teaches you the proper form and pacing needed to successfully complete a 5K event. Enjoy our supportive, motivating environment as you prepare to run or walk. The Bethlehem Y’s Couch to 5K program meets at the Y on Monday and Wednesday nights from 7-8 p.m. beginning January 8, 2018 through March 4th.

Youth Lacrosse Training -- Participation in youth lacrosse is increasing fast and the YMCA has a program to help kids get stronger, faster and better! Youth lacrosse conditioning focuses on off season strength and conditioning program for grades 6 and up. It is designed to help athletes stay in shape for upcoming season. The program begins on January 8, 2018 on Tuesday and Thursday nights from 5:30-6:30 p.m.

Each Christmas we see more and more families who are more concerned about having food on the table than toys under the tree. That’s why many people donate gift cards for local stores and supermarkets for people who need food, shampoo, a blanket, diapers and formula, coats, hats and boots.
