The Albany County Department of Health is holding a public health emergency preparedness exercise after school on Wednesday, March 1, 2017 between 3:00-5:00pm.

In a real public health emergency, medications may need to be dispensed quickly to lots of people in our community. This exercise will help us practice, teach you about public health, and make sure that we are all PREPARED! What Do Volunteers Have to Do? We need you to come to Gym A between 3:00-5:00 pm to volunteer to go through the dispensing process on March 1st. We’ll give you instructions when you get there. Canterbury Vet Climate Change

Climate change has its critics and not everyone agrees on the issue. Nevertheless, warmer temperatures have been changing our ecosystems, which can play a role in your pet’s health. As responsible pet owners, one way we can protect our furry friends is by being aware of how climate change can affect them.

Climate change can influence our weather by creating winter and summer storms with more intensity, severe and longer lasting heat waves, droughts and floods that impact agriculture, and changes to ecosystems that impact wildlife and hibernation habits for animals, including pests that seek out our pets for a blood meal.

Winter was once considered a time when the population of fleas, ticks, mosquitos and other pests decreased, especially in the colder climate of the Midwest and Northeastern states. However, due to warming environments, the season for these pests has gotten longer, even in the northern states. Fleas and ticks are adapting and breeding with zeal.

These parasites are finding places where they can survive and they are eating more, which can affect the health of our dogs and cats.

Fleas can cause anemia, tapeworms, flea allergies, and can transmit Bartonella (aka cat scratch fever). Ticks can put you and your pet at risk of getting Lyme and other tick borne

diseases. Warmer winters mean ticks are out waiting for a warm-blooded animal to walk by so they can hitch a ride.

Heartworm, a mosquito-borne disease, was previously more common in southern states, but has now been found in every state in the United States.

In the past, bloodsucking pests that seek out our pets have been kept in check during the cold months of winter.

Predators like bats, birds and larger insects also help. When habitats are modified by climate change, a decrease in the number of these predators can take place which allows fleas, ticks and mosquitoes to grow in numbers thereby increasing the chance of infecting us and our pets with the diseases they carry. Preventive medications and other methods for controlling these pests are a necessity for the entire year, as is heartworm prevention.

Climate change has produced an increase in natural disasters such as forest fires, hurricanes, tornadoes and floods. This puts pets at risk when families are forced to move away from the danger or are unable to escape a disaster. Pets can become lost or separated from those they love. Not all shelters that house people during natural disasters will accept pets, so it’s important to have a plan on how to keep yourself and your pets safe when the unthinkable happens.

Climate change can affect your pet’s health, but awareness of how it can impact us and our pets helps you find ways to deal with warming temperatures and keep your furry friends happy and healthy.

FINANCIAL FOCU$ On Valentine’s Day, Consider Financial Gifts Last year, Americans spent more than $19 billion on Valentine’s Day gifts, according to the National Retail Federation, with the majority of this money going to flowers, candy, cards and an evening out. These gifts were thoughtful, of course, and no doubt appreciated, but they were also somewhat disposable, for want of a better word.

On the other hand, some financial gifts can have a pretty long “shelf life.”

Beyond simply enclosing some money in a card, what sort of financial gifts can you give? The answer depends somewhat on the recipient. For example, if your sweetheart is also your spouse, some of the gifts suggested below may be redundant to the financial moves you make together.

However, if you aren’t married, or if you and your spouse maintain separate finances, these ideas may make excellent Valentine’s Day presents: • IRA contributions – Technically, you can’t contribute directly to someone else’s traditional or Roth IRA, but you can write a check to your loved one – although, of course, he or she is free to use the money for any purpose. Like most people, your valentine may not usually contribute the yearly maximum amount – which, in 2017, is $5,500, or $6,500 if you’re 50 or older – so your check should be quite welcome. A traditional IRA can grow on tax-deferred basis, and contributions may be tax-deductible. (Taxes are due upon withdrawal, and any withdrawals you make before you reach 59½ may be subject to a 10% IRS penalty. A Roth IRA’s earnings are distributed tax-free, provided withdrawals aren’t taken until the account owner is 59½ and has had the IRA for at least five years.

• Charitable gifts – Consider making a gift to a charitable organization supported by your loved one. When you send cash to a qualified charity, you can get a tax deduction, but you might gain even bigger benefits by donating appreciated securities you’ve held for more than one year. By doing so, you can generally deduct the value of the securities, based on their worth when you make the gift. Plus, neither you nor the charity will have to pay capital gains taxes on the donated investments.

• Contributions to an emergency fund – It’s a good idea for everyone to maintain an emergency fund to cover unanticipated expenses, such as a major car repair, a new furnace or out-of-pocket medical bills. If your valentine doesn’t have such a fund, consider helping him or her establish one, with the money going to a liquid, low-risk account.

• Gym membership – Although not actually a “financial” gift, a gym membership can nonetheless bring some positive economic results to your valentine. For one thing, the insurance industry is providing more incentives to encourage people to exercise and live healthier lifestyles. But even if a gym membership doesn’t give your loved one a break on insurance premiums, it can nonetheless result in better physical conditioning, which, in, turn, could ultimately result in lower medical costs.

On Valentine’s Day, you may still want to get your sweetheart something associated with the holiday. But if it’s within your means to do so, also consider one of the above suggestions for financial gifts. Your generosity will still be felt long after the chocolates are eaten and the flowers have faded.

Bethlehem during World War I: John Adams Dyer

100 years ago in April, the United States of America entered World War I. Centennials such as this offer a time to pause and reflect and wonder about our local history during a transformative era in American history.

Perhaps you’ve heard of Nathanial Adams Blanchard? The Blanchard Post in Delmar is named after him and every year before the Memorial Day Parade, the members of the post lay a wreath at his gravesite. Blanchard, son of Grace Adams and Clarence Blanchard, was killed in action in France on November 9, 1918, just two days before the armistice of November 11. But have you heard of his cousin, John Adams Dyer? His story too has a tragic ending.

John Adams Dyer is the son of Jessie Adams (sister of Grace) and Zeb A. Dyer. The couple married in 1889 and their son John was born in Delmar September 24, 1891. Zeb was a prominent lawyer active in the Democratic party and elected Albany County District Attorney in 1899. He died of typhoid fever at the age of 43 on September 18 1904. John was not quite 13 years old.

The Dyers lived right next door to the Blanchards on Kenwood Avenue in the heart of the Four Corners. One can imagine the cousins, four years apart in age, hanging out together. Dyer went to the Albany Academy and was on the baseball and hockey team. His time there, with the academy’s emphasis on military procedures and training in leadership, would have served him well after his enlistment.

When he filled out his Draft Registration Card, Dyer listed his place of address as Delmar and occupation as automobile salesman with H. E. Lishman in Troy, NY. Congress declared war on Germany on April 6, 1917, but it took time for the U.S. to gear up. On June 26, the first 14,000 troops arrived in France to relieve the war battered soldiers of France and Great Britain. It wasn’t until the summer of 1918 that U.S. troops arrived in Europe in large numbers.

The Selective Service Act was enacted in May of 1917. From these registrations, the U.S. military built up and by the end,

over four million people had been mobilized for the war effort. John Dyer was among the first rounds selected for Albany County. On September 8, 1917, he was inducted at Delmar, and he and other Albany County men soon found themselves on a special train bound for Camp Devens in Ayers, Mass.

Camp Devens was the regional cantonment set up to train the draftees. Dyer was assigned to 76th Division of the National Army, Company L of the 303rd infantry. By the time his unit was sent overseas on July 7, 1918, Dyer was a Sergeant.

The 303rd was part of the American Expeditionary Forces.

Reportedly, the 76th was assigned to a depot division at St Aignan, France and the division was soon broken up with cadres of soldiers going to the front to replace and relieve those already in place. One source for the 76th division “battle honors” lists the St. Mihiel Offensive, a successful drive by General Pershing’s forces against the Germans.

Here we lose track of Dyer specifically. Was he assigned to the frontlines in France? Did he experience the horrors of trench warfare? The blasts of artillery? The fumes of mustard gas? The death and destruction? We simply don’t know. His record indicates that he served overseas from July 7, 1918 until July 9, 1919. At the time of his honorable discharge on

July 30, 1919, he was a Second Lieutenant. Dyer then came home to Delmar, and lived with his mom.

We know he continued as a car salesman, and later was a salesman for Dearstyne Brothers, purveyors of fine cigars.

He was a member of the Masters’ lodge of Masons, the Knights Templar and the Shrine. The local newspapers have a few mentions of Dyer after he came home from the war. In 1922, he helped organize a social for the Delmar Democratic Club (a concert and dance at the Delmar fireman’s hall). In 1923 there is a mention of his name in a long list of attendees of a Tawasentha Chapter DAR card party and dance also held at the Delmar firehall. And then there is this headline from the January 2, 1925 issue of the Altamont Enterprise: “John Dyer Dies of Gas Fumes in Delmar Garage.” His mother Jessie found him behind the wheel of his car in a closed garage dead from carbon monoxide poisoning. He was just 33 years old What to make of this tragic story of a life cut short?

Bethlehem’s local history is part of the story of our national history. Many from Bethlehem served overseas in the military during World War I. Many others remained behind and supported the war effort on the home front. What was Bethlehem like 100 years ago? The family is part of the YMCA’s Circle of Champs program that provides support and respite for children facing life-threatening illnesses, as well as for their parents and siblings. Circle of Champs is one of the many programs supported by donations to the Y’s Annual Campaign.

For one family, their first miracle was that their son is here at all. Doctors diagnosed him with a rare genetic disorder, and his prognosis was dire. Yet, last month he was celebrating his fifth Christmas with his parents and older brother.

However, medical and other expenses didn’t leave any money for presents. Ornaments representing a few small items on their Christmas list were placed on the YMCA holiday giving tree. That’s when the Bethlehem Police got involved and fulfilled the families’ Christmas wish list. The Bethlehem PBA, Supervisors Association, and Telecommunications Union worked together with the Y to buy gifts and deliver them to the family.

To an older boy in the family, police officers are his heroes and he wants to grow up to be one. For him, having the officers show up at his home with a patrol car carrying presents was better than Santa arriving on the rooftop in his sleigh.

Bethlehem Police Sergeant Steve Kraz coordinated the effort that made it such a special Christmas. “After hearing more about their situation and another child in the family who has an admiration for police officers, we stopped at their home and visited with their family,” Steve said. “It was such a gratifying experience to see the love of their family and the care they give their children. The time we took to stop and visit made this holiday season more memorable, not only for us, but for the family. It truly left an impact that paying it forward is something this community recognizes.”

Beyond the gifts, the Police also donated food, formula and diapers to help meet the families’ needs.

Thank you to the Bethlehem Police, YMCA volunteer board member Diane Lykes, and all the Y members who adopted families, took ornaments from the Giving Tree, and purchased presents and food gift cards.

Your efforts helped make Christmas brighter for over 300 children and families in our community.

Afghan Family Update – Thanks Sew Much!

Last month in this space, I wrote about the important role the Bethlehem YMCA is playing in the lives of a family from Afghanistan who are living in our area. Part of the story mentioned that the family makes

hats, gloves, and aprons and would love to have a sewing machine. Well, Bethlehem YMCA members and others in our community stepped up to help in a big way. The family now has six sewing machines (and counting)!

The women in the family plan to join with other Afghan women in the area who are talented at making clothing.

They hope to start a small business, making and selling clothing at local shops and markets.

In addition, another person in our community read about the family’s struggle to put food on the table and volunteered to donate groceries each month to help!

It is always inspiring to see how the members of our community step up to assist families and individuals in need. If you would like to help a Bethlehem family, please consider contributing to the YMCA’s Annual Campaign.

Every penny stays in our town to help low income families use the programs and services of the Y and helps build a stronger community. No one is turned away from the Y because they cannot pay, but we can only keep that commitment with your help.

However, toward the end of life it’s important to be aware of the options available to you to make sure your loved one is cared for with utmost dignity and respect. Hospice is one of the options you may want to consider in your search for care.

Here’s some helpful information on hospice and what it means for you and your family.

Q: Who qualifies for hospice?

A: Most hospice programs admit patients who have a terminal illness with a life expectancy of 6 months or less. Hospice care can occur in the family home, in a hospital setting, in nursing homes, and other community settings.

A doctor’s approval for hospice care is usually required to qualify, although hospice programs will often have their own medical team who can help make this decision if you or your family member does not have a doctor.

Q: What exactly is hospice care?

A: Hospice is a service that puts a patient’s comfort at the forefront of care.

Pain management and symptom control to ease the discomfort of a terminal illness are the priority for hospice care professionals. Once enrolled with a hospice program, most patients will have consistent nursing care, spiritual services as requested, palliative care specialists, and emergency support by phone 24/7. While Medicare mandates a certain benchmark for hospice programs, it’s important to discuss the nuances of any hospice program when considering this option.

Q: When should I talk about hospice care with my loved one?

A: It’s appropriate to begin this discussion whenever you and your family feel comfortable talking about it. In fact, it’s often better to have these topics out in the open well in advance of making a formal decision. It is often easier to make decisions that stay true to a family member’s wishes before he or she becomes terminally ill rather than after.

Q: Does hospice make people die sooner?

A: Absolutely not. The goal of hospice has nothing to do with quickening the dying process. It’s simply an opportunity to surround a patient with experts in the dying process to make it as comfortable as possible while preserving the dignity of the dying.

Q: Isn’t this giving up?

A: There is a shift in focus with hospice, but it doesn’t mean that you are giving up. The medical team does everything it can to save and cure the patients they treat, and your family member is no exception. Once a terminal illness strikes that cannot be treated, it’s a hard fact to accept. But the best thing you can do for your loved one is often to preserve the dignity and quality of life to make their time here as enjoyable as possible. Even after beginning hospice, if a patient’s condition changes course and shows signs of recovery, it is well within the rights of the patient to choose to leave hospice.

Q: Will my insurance help pay for hospice?

A: It is very likely. The federal government considers hospice a covered service under Medicare, and most states include hospice coverage in Medicaid. Those insured through private companies will likely have coverage available as well, although it’s best to contact the insurance company to make sure.

If your loved one is covered under the Medicare hospice benefit, there will be very little out-of-pocket expenses for you and your family. Many support services for not only the patient but also caregivers are covered as well, helping to keep all involved as well as possible during this challenging time.

Q: What happens after my family member passes?

A: Usually support services and contact can be maintained for caregivers for up to one year after a hospice patient’s death.

We celebrate Black History Month, Ground Hog Day, St. Valentine’s Day, President’s Day, President’s Week, as well as National Cherry Month, Dental Health Care, Random Acts of Kindness and so many more…there is even a National Old Broad’s Month!!! No matter your preference…Tattered Pages has a book for that!!!

Since last writing my darlin’ Dad turned 88! We had a huge celebration at the Teresian House in Albany where they allow residents to use a beautiful café area, The Avila Lounge. The ages of those celebrating ranged from 6 months to 88 years!

One of the things that I love about where my Dad lives is the eclectic environment of media, books, music and activities for the residents. Besides attending Mass daily in the Infant of Prague chapel, there is Bible study, rosary, Bingo, arts and crafts…but there are books available in regular and large print for residents and workers! Recently I read to Dad from one of his Chicken Soup for the Soldier’s Heart books. When one of the assistants noticed my Dad’s collection, she asked to borrow a book written by Max Lucado. It is a positive reflection a day book. Reading inspires, educates and inspires…have you read for enjoyment today? I hear from many that they are often too tired to read after a day’s work and on the flip side, I hear from people who listen to audio books on the treadmill or stationary bike! Reading is like exercise to some…and like exercise, people are opinionated about that as well!

I have been reading since I was 3 years old! I taught myself listening and following along with those wonderful Disney books with 45rpm records. My two boys often went to sleep listening to books on cassette. Boy, the George Washington at Valley Forge tape wore out from repeated use! Currently, my 4 year old granddaughter Raven enjoys her books with audio cds and is recognizing words and connecting alphabet to sounds. I have always been a bookworm, or as my grandmother joked, a “story sponge”! To this day, I love a great story! I have viewed reading like a visit to an alternate universe where I observe and often participate in the adventures and lives of others; famous or fictional! My love of the supernatural is no stronger than my love of mystery, history, and thrillers. This year I have stepped out of my comfort zone and have taken the recommendations of several of my customers with new authors and genres. All have been an incredible success.

As most of you know, the books at Tattered Pages have been willingly brought in by avid readers to attain credits so that they receive an additional 20% off their future purchases. I do not buy books but the credits earned like a coupon on purchases.

My software keeps track of what you have brought in and what you have purchased, so, no duplications can occur in purchasing.

This is NOT the place to “get rid of books” or bring in more than 6 books (12 if they are children’s books or DVDs)! It is a benefit to avid readers who wish to conscientiously recycle their books and get an incredible break on the cost of gently read books.

There are close to 19,000 titles in here, many in gift giving quality. There are approximately 2,000 in the children’s section alone. I find it amusing when people new to the shop ask where the most recently published books are kept! I tell them that

I don’t discriminate…that they are mixed in the shelves with the others. If you know the author or title I can find whether I have that book immediately! If you belong to a “book club” and know your book assignment ahead of time, consider my shop for your next purchase. I can often get a book, cheaper than any store in the area, and quickly!

I am often asked “What am I looking for?” This might help: classic literature that is read in high school and college, Harry Potter, Nancy Drew, cookbooks by Food Network chefs as well as crockpot cookbooks, history books written by renowned authors such as McCullough, Doris Kearns Goodwin, Erik Larson, Bill O’Reilly and Cokie Roberts, anything on the American wars, recent “best-sellers” that are less than two years old, children’s board books, emergent reader chapter books, sci-fi fantasy authors and books on CD. This is not the place for encyclopedias. Books brought in should be clean, free of dirt and any kind of water damage (of course). Paperbacks by law must have front and back covers, hardcover novels should have dustjackets.

During the month of January I had a special in the shop of “Spend $15 and receive a free book” and it has gone over very well. In the month of February I have two specials: on Saturday, Feb. 11th from 11-4 our Valentine’s Day Jewelry Sale hosted by Dana Flint a founding member of the Delmar Farmer’s Market!

Her beautiful and unique sterling silver wire earrings, rings and accessories will be on sale at the shop. She will have 300 + pieces starting under $10! There will also be a vendor here with homemade soap for sale. There will be book specials as well throughout the shop! I will be featuring the “Buy $15 and choose a free book” special all during February! There is also a diverse array of books each day for $1, $3.99 and $5.00.

As a small business owner in Glenmont, I would like to ask your help in spreading the word about my shop. The competition of the e-reader, big box stores and online stores makes it increasingly difficult for those of us in small business to stay viable. Please spread the word…it is the most effective way of advertising. The shop will have been in this location 10 years in June…Remember most of my books are in gift giving quality and it is my service, selection and value that sets me apart from the others. Also, I have in residence the cutest store greeter ever, Seamus my long-haired red dachshund who has now worked in the shop 7 years!!!

Fort Orange was built by the Dutch at the same early date the English were landing at Plymouth Rock.

Nothing remains in either location from those first houses built circa 1620, however both the Hudson and the Mohawk Valleys contain a number of fine examples of Dutch architecture from the early 17th and early 18th centuries. The focus of the lecture will be on the earliest houses that were built either as urban dwellings or rural homesteads. Several of the homes that have been fully restored from the inside out highlighting their unique Dutch features. The lecture will end with one of a kind examples of furniture these homes contained and illustrate how they differ in their designs and forms from their New England counterparts. ​ arilyn Sassi is currently an adjunct instructor at M Schenectady County and Hudson Valley Community Colleges.

She has also presented series for U-Call at Union College. Marilyn is the past curator of the Schenectady County Historical Society, the Fulton County Museum and the Van Alstyne Homestead Society. In addition, she has had many years of involvement in the field of antiques.

Valentines Day Facts

Although no one knows for sure the exact origin of Valentine’s Day it is believe that it started in the Roman Empire around 270AD under the ruling of Claudius II. During time of war Claudius did not want men to get married because he believed it made them weak.

It is said that Bishop Valentine would perform secret wedding ceremonies so men could marry their sweethearts.

Bishop Valentine got in big trouble for performing marriage ceremonies and was sent to jail.

While in jail Bishop Valentine wrote a love letter to the jailer’s daughter and signed from you Valentine.

Bishop Valentine was put to death for his crime on February 14th.

Why is the color red the symbol of Valentine’s Day? Red is the color of blood. It was once believed that the heart (the body’s organ that pumps the blood) is that part of the body that the feeling of love came from.

King Henry VII of England declared St. Valentine’s Day a holiday in 1537.

During Medieval Times girls would eat unusual foods on Valentine’s Day. It

was believed that it made them have dreams about their future husband.

During the Middle Ages men and women would pick names out af a bowl and the person’s name they drew would be considered their Valentine. They would wear that person’s name on their sleeve for a week. This is where the saying wear your heart on your sleeve comes from.

The oldest known Valentine’s Day card is on display at the British Museum in London. It’s dates back to the 1400’s.

The first box of chocolates for made for Valentine’s Day was made by Richard Cadbury in the 1800’s.

Valentine’s Day is celebrated in America, Italy, United Kingdom, Mexico, Canada, France, Australia and Denmark.

In Shakespeare’s play Romeo and Juliet it is said that they lived in Verona Italy. Every year thousands of Valentine’s Day cards at sent to Verona addressed to Juliet.

It is believed that the tradition of giving red roses for Valentine’s Day has to with the Greek Mythology Goddess Aphrodite. Aphrodite is the goddess of love, beauty and pleasure.

In Roman Mythology Venus is the goddess of love.

Who is Cupid and what does he have to do with Valentine’s Day? Cupid is the Roman god of desire, erotic love and affection. In Latin (ancient language) Cupid means Amor. Amor in English means love.

Lace is a fabric that is associated with Valentine’s Day. Lace comes from the Latin word laques meaning to snare or net as in to catch a person’s heart.

Teachers receive the most Valentine’s Day cards followed by children, mothers, wives, sweethearts and pets.

Millions of heart-shaped boxes of chocolate are bought every year for Valentine’s Day. Over 1 billion Valentine’s Day cards are sent worldwide every year.
