One of our favorite parts of summer in Bethlehem is the Farmers’ Markets and outside dining at our great restaurants. Enjoy! A few months ago, we made the decision to discontinue running non-paid ads and articles. With 12 years of print and postage increases, this was necessary. Everyone was offered to continue at a discouted rate if they chose to. We will still post non-profit listing like the Library calendar, as a community service. Finally, we wish all our Triathlon friends the best of luck as they compete in IRONMAN this month. It has been an awesome journey. BELIEVE!
Enjoy the Summer!

Ask the
Canterbury Vet It is finally summer! Schools out, the weather is nice and summer vacation is on the horizon. If it’s not possible to bring your dog along on your vacation, you’ll have to arrange for his care while you are away. The best option is to have a reliable friend, family member, or neighbor come to your home (or even stay in your home) several times a day to feed, water, exercise, and spend time with your dog. You could also hire a professional petsitter to perform these duties. Another solution is to board your dog at a reputable kennel. Services for kennels vary, but whether you choose a basic facility or a lavish “bed-andbiscuit” resort with pet aromatherapy, keep these considerations in mind. • Make sure that the whole kennel, outdoor and indoor runs included, is clean and orderly. • There should be no offensive odors. A wellrun kennel should not stink of doggy odorsdog odor is an indication of poor ventilation and lack of cleanliness. • The environment should be temperature adjusted – adequate air conditioning/heating. • Ask to see the outdoor run/play area. It should be close to spotless and made of gravel, rubber, concrete or other easily disinfected surface. Ask how frequently areas are cleaned. • Kennel owners and operators should be happy to show you each area in which pets are kept. • Outdoor runs and the entire kennel should be very secure. Many dogs will attempt to break out, jump fences, so talk to kennel owners about this if your pet is an escape artist. • The staff should seem knowledgeable and caring. • Pets should be required to be current on their vaccinations, including the vaccine for canine kennel cough (Bordetella). This helps protect your animal and others. • Each dog should have his own adequately sized indoor-outdoor run or an indoor run and an exercise schedule. • Cats should be housed away from dogs. • There should be enough space for cats to 8
move around comfortably. There should also be adequate space between the litter box and food bowls. • The kennel should feed your pet his regular food (which you bring) to help prevent GI distress while boarding. Some final tips to help make the transition to a kennel less stressful for your pet: Be sure your pet knows basic commands and is well socialized around other people and pets; if your pet has an aggression problem or is otherwise unruly, he may not be a good candidate for boarding. Before taking your animal to the kennel, make sure he is current on vaccinations. Accustom your pet to longer kennel stays by first boarding him during a short trip, such as a weekend excursion. This allows you to work out any problems before boarding your pet for an extended period. Prior to heading to the kennel, double-check that you have your pet’s medications and special food (if any), your veterinarian’s phone number, and contact information for you and a local backup. When you arrive with your pet at the boarding facility, remind the staff about any medical or behavior problems your pet has, such as a history of seizures, allergies (food or otherwise) or fear of thunder. After the check-in process, hand your pet to a staff member, say good-bye in a positive and upbeat manner and leave. Avoid long, emotional partings and do not apologize to your dog- your dog will sense your discomfort and become upset himself. Finally, have a good trip, knowing that your pet is in good hands. You may return to find your dog enjoyed his “vacation” as much as you did! To Protect and Serve Ah summer has arrived! Our officers have been busy, not only with our roles in public safety, but we’ve also been busier than ever in the community. The summer months can be a challenge for law enforcement, but we are up for the task no matter what the criminal element or Clarkson throws our way.
neither of these employees would have left the Town of Bethlehem. Multiple other police department employees that are well trained, educated, and are lifelong town residents, are now pursuing employment in other jurisdictions. Whether Clarkson wants to admit it or not, we remain short staffed, demoralized, and overworked.
Finally, Clarkson has recently determined a need to fill the Deputy Chief position, which was unfilled for over two years, and to appoint an additional non-civil service commander position to force his agenda on the police department. If the Town Supervisor and Board Members filled these positions in a timely manner and stopped the deteriorating working conditions that encouraged As the Bethlehem Police Lieutenant unionization, then Clarkson would not have to Officer’s Union President and lifelong Town resident, I circumvent civil service and create additional appointed have the responsibility to inform the public of the facts positions. regarding the dispute between the police department and Town elected officials. Meanwhile, taxpayer dollars the police force has shrunk from 44 to 37 officers – are needlessly spent on litigation and consultants with actually now - 36 officers. no end in sight. Even Clarkson’s bought-and-paid-for consultant studies have indicated that police staffing levels should be minimally maintained at 39 sworn officers and that every shift should have a Supervisor. Clarkson has dismissed these recommendations since he knows better than the consultants he commissioned at our expense.
As a lifelong resident and employee of the Town, I want nothing more than a modern, efficient and fiscally sound police department. We agree that overtime is at an alltime high and needs to be curtailed by proper staffing and innovative policy changes. As a police officer, I am sworn to protect the public and will not be bullied by this agenda that fundamentally deteriorates the mission and With decreased staffing, overtime costs have risen. COVER: David Baxter’s blacksmith shop at Normansville. The horse’s ears were colored in by David’s granddaughter Barbara Baxter Castle.
John Martin’s blacksmith shop at Bethlehem Center.
By that time he was living with his brother-in-law William Comstock on the Bethlehem Stone Road, another name for Route 9W. David Baxter is another blacksmith working in Bethlehem who followed in his father’s footsteps. His father, Henry Cox Baxter (1833-1914) was born in England. He came with his family to the U.S. and settled in Knox. By the 1892 New York Census, Henry and his wife Elizabeth Van Auken had settled in Adams Station (today’s Delmar.) Henry continued to make a living blacksmithing while they raised their six children. Son David was born in 1869. David married Anna Marie Adams on November 6, 1895. Anna was the granddaughter of Nathaniel Adams proprietor of the Adams House Hotel and namesake of Adamsville and Adams Station. Shortly after their marriage, Anna and David set up their own household in Normansville. Through the 1920 census, David is listed as a blacksmith in Normansville. By, 1930 when he is 60, his occupation has changed to laborer for the State. Anna and David had one son named Malcolm. The Blacksmith Shop at Normans Kill Farm Park One of the pleasures of being town historian is the chance to lead History Hikes. The one through the hamlet of Normansville often includes a visit to a working blacksmith shop.
Through the years Bethlehem has had many independent blacksmiths in support of our rural, agricultural economy. Hamilton Child’s 1870 Gazetteer of Albany County lists nine blacksmiths in the Town of Bethlehem including John Martin of Bethlehem Center. Martin is listed as a wagon maker and blacksmith. Just about everyone in the directory for Bethlehem is listed as a farmer, often in combination with another occupation. Soap maker and farmer. Physician and farmer. Milk dealer and farmer. Carpenter and joiner and farmer. Christopher Trager, also of Bethlehem Center, is a blacksmith and farmer as are Edward Cloeweny and Daniel Caley. Henry Arnold, James Carpenter, Charles Kinny, Robert McDowell and Joseph Moore are the other blacksmiths. John Martin and wife Elizabeth Rawer were both born in Germany. By the 1870 U.S. census they were established in Bethlehem Center near today’s Price Chopper and Farm Family Insurance on Route 9W. John, age 37, was blacksmithing and Elizabeth, age 31, was keeping house. They have seven children including son John, age 13, who would go on to be a blacksmith. Also in the household was Fred Garehiner, age 21, a blacksmith. Next door was A. Vandenburg, his wife Polly and son Levi. Vandenburg was a wheelwright which fits with the gazetteer listing mentioned above. John (1833-1890) and Elizabeth (1839-1902) are buried down the road in Elmwood Cemetery. John the younger remained single and continued on blacksmithing in Bethlehem Center at least through the 1925 New York census where he is age 68 and still listed as a blacksmith. Tools of the trade. (Michael Joyce, photographer.) 20
Stepping into the blacksmith shop at the Normans Kill Farm Park, the first things I notice are the tools, everywhere hand forged tools, the smell, the oily smell of burning coal, and Jim Moran, tall and lanky, standing beside the forge ready to show our group a little bit about blacksmithing. Lighting up newspaper, adding a scoop of coal,
adjusting the airflow with the bellows, Jim gets the forge hot. He picks up a bit of steel (recycled from one of those pesky lawn signs that show up in abundance during election season) and demonstrates how the application of heat turns the steel pliable. Using hammer and anvil, he can then shape it as desired. Such is the basic premise of the blacksmith. Jim Moran has been blacksmithing since 1972 enjoying the process of taking a raw material, like iron and steel, and crafting it into something. He can use hammer and anvil, heat and force, to create all manner of useful and decorative items, from hammers and tongs to nails and hooks. But his favorite work is repairing things and making them functional again. The blacksmith shop at the Normanskill Farm Park was part of the Stevens farm. It was set up to handle maintenance work for the farm and included a brick forge for blacksmithing. For a large farm like the Stephen’s property, which went on to become the hub of the Normanskill Farm Dairy, it made sense to have a blacksmith on site. J.M. Drew wrote Farm Blacksmithing in 1910 and advocated for farmers to do their own basic blacksmithing. Drew argues that the time saved by making one’s own repairs is more important than any cash saved. “What farmer has not often been obliged, by some slight breakage, to go to the town or village shop, perhaps several miles away, and there find that he must wait for several horses to be shod before his little job… could be attended to by the blacksmith.” The original Normanskill Farm building dates from the 1830s. The farm’s maintenance shop and blacksmith were in the front section and ice storage was in the back. Over the years the forge fell into disrepair. In 2007, it was restored using the designs of Patrick Grossi. Grossi, himself the son of a blacksmith, was the lead blacksmith at the Farmer’s Museum in Cooperstown. His design was built by a city of Albany mason. Sadly, Grossi died just two months shy of the opening of the forge. Jim Moran has lead blacksmith duties ever since and hosts regular meetings of the Capital District Blacksmiths Association as well as

countless school children. The Normanskill Farm Park, owned by the city of Albany since 1980, hosts several hundred elementary age students in the spring for farm tours and blacksmithing demonstrations. The park boasts hiking trails, a dog park, and community gardens. It is the home of the Albany police horses and mounted patrol. Also on the property and not to be missed is the historic Whipple bowstring truss bridge. Moved here in 1899 to carry the farm road over a steep gorge, it is one of the earliest surviving iron bridges in the U.S. It was constructed in 1867 in Syracuse, NY to span the Erie Canal. One should note that the park was located in the town of Bethlehem until 1910 when the area was annexed by Albany. Many thanks to Michael Joyce for the modern day photographs. Susan E. Leath presently serves as Bethlehem’s Town Historian. She is the author of Bethlehem an illustrative history of our town with over 200 images dating from the 1880s to 1960. CAR CARE TIPS When asked, you may hear answers such as every 3000, 5000 or 7500 miles, or when the vehicle’s oil monitor indicates that this service is necessary. It is no wonder consumers are confused. The simplest answer... well, there is no simple answer! In fact, there is no interval that applies to most vehicles. AMRA/MAP has been examining this question for some time. Read on to find out what we feel every motorist needs to know about this subject. The engine serves as the heart of your vehicle, so changing its oil based on the manufacturer’s recommendation is perhaps the single most important thing that you can do to keep your vehicle’s engine running longer. However, you must read these recommendations closely to determine the correct interval; the interval that matches your vehicle’s operating conditions and your driving habits. The Normal interval listed in the owner’s manual applies to vehicles driven under ideal conditions. While you may consider your driving habits and operating conditions quite normal, read the fine print. Some exceptions to Normal driving include: •Frequent short trips (less than 10 miles, especially during cold weather) •Stop-and-go city traffic driving •Driving in dusty conditions, on gravel roads, etc. •Driving at sustained highway speeds during hot weather •Towing use •Diesel or turbocharged engine These conditions commonly appear in the description of severe service driving. AMRA/MAP advises that you read your owner’s manual to locate the correct interval.
What about the 3000 mile oil change myth? Consider these facts:
•Oil requires complex additives and detergents to help prevent corrosion and sludge buildup •Additives allow oil to flow freely at extremely cold temperatures while also providing protection under extremely hot temperatures •Testing shows that aer 3000 miles the oil itself still lubricates, but the depletion of critical additives may no longer allow the oil to offer the same protec.on and benefits •Longer intervals may benefit the environment, but perhaps at the expense of engine life •Re-refined oils offer an alternative for motorists with concerns about the environment •Re-refined oils use the remaining lubricating qualities of used oil, and replenish the depleted additives to create oils that meet the quality of new oil
Proper Maintenance Helps Extend Vehicle Life!
Your driving type or vehicle usage may affect the maintenance 28
intervals below. You should follow the manufacturer’s service schedule that best matches your vehicle’s operating conditions. Those recommendations may include: •Change your engine oil at the vehicle manufacturer’s recommended service interval that matches your vehicle’s operating conditions and your driving habits •Check your tire inflation pressure monthly •Rotate your tires at the vehicle manufacturer’s recommended service interval or every 6 months/5,000 miles •Change the engine air filter annually or when visibly restricted. •Inspect Brake System every 12 months/15,000 miles

“The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.” Dr. Seuss Happy Summer to you my dear constant readers, July is a time of celebration of our independence in so many ways! Summertime often brings a shift to our lives. This season offers many freedoms and often more opportunities to enjoy this great country of ours! Whether you have a vacation planned, day trips, shortened work days, or staycations planned…do you have your summer “read” to bring along with you? Summer always offered me more time to read. Often the TV would not come on at all (re-runs) and we squeaked out that last bit of sunlight riding bikes, swimming, hiking, picnicking, or just walking about talking. As twilight came we had to be within shouting distance of the house as we had no street lights in the suburb of Westmere where I lived. Porch lights came on slowly and that whistle by Mr. Chapman not only brought the 11 Chapman kids running, but signaled to all it was time to come in. That last kick of the can, freeze tag touch, and hide and seek had to come to a quick end. We often went on to my cousin Barney’s screen porch to play Monopoly, Risk, Stratego, Uno or double solitaire. That last breath of fresh air before going in for the night was the recognition that one more summer day was done. As I prepared for bed I often had to read a bedtime story to my baby sister, Kelly or a chapter to my little brother Donny before I could dive into my own book. I loved the summer reading list that I was assigned while at Christ the King and Mercy High. Some of those books feel like old friends met on a hazy, humid night as they took me off on incredible adventures in distant times and far away locations (My Antonia, Willa Cather; Jonathan Livingston Seagull, Richard Bach, Little Women, Louisa May Alcott, Last of the Mohicans, James Fenimore Cooper, Kidnapped, Robert Louis Stevenson, The Little Prince, Antoine de St.-Exupery, Island of the Blue Dolphins, Scott O’Dell, and of course my alltime favorite, To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee.) There were books that were taken poolside, on vacation, on a picnic, on a long road trip, there were those assigned to read and each one opened my imagination to the cadence of language, of cultural traditions, of locations near & far. I have a T-shirt that says “Reading is exercise for your brain!” Summer offers a great opportunity for that experience in so many ways. If your child has a summer reading list, check with me first. If I don’t have it in shop, I would be glad to order one for you, and unlike bookstores that carry only “new” items, I will do my best to get you books that are “out of print”. I am always amazed by those people who share with me their difficulties with other bookstores in getting books for them, especially if they aren’t newly published! I try my best to keep prices low and often make minimal profit from those sales because I want to do my best to connect readers with just the right books. Books in my shop start at $1 and the others are marked off between 20-60% off publishers’ suggested price. I have them in genres, in alphabetical order by author’s name, 30
and all inventory is on my computer. I also offer the service of looking for you if you contact me on Facebook: Tattered Pages, LLC or my website: www.tatteredpages365.webs.com or e-mail me at mytatteredpages@gmail.com where you can tell me what you might be looking for, and I can look for you and contact you. I just recently took in a nice collection of children’s chapter books, especially the Dear America series, The Lunch Lady series, Polk Street School, Harry Potter and Boxcar Children books. I am in need of Magic Treehouse, Jigsaw Jones, and any 2nd-4th grade chapter books and toddler board books. Remember you can earn credits that will take 22% more off in-store purchases! I also carry some greeting cards for $1 and DVDs starting under $5. As many of you know, my Darlin’ Dad now resides at Rosewood Gardens and I have become very close to many of the residents, CNAs, Nurses and activities directors. Seamus comes with me 5 times a week and sits on many laps, greets many in wheelchairs, and even attends church service there on Sundays. I love seeing how reading is a commonality in so many of the residents’ lives. At church they take turns reading poetry, from the scriptures and raise their voices in song. They have come to realize that I read daily to my Dad in his room. I will often sense someone listening outside his room and invite them in. They hold Seamus and listen to me read to my Dad from Father Joseph Girzone’s “The Parables of Joshua”, “God Calling”, Max Lucado’s “Come Thirsty”. There is a wonderful library there, which I add to weekly and often bring books to certain residents for them to keep. They always ask me to inscribe inside a sentiment from Seamus and me! I love the time spent reading to my Dad. I reflect upon those times when he read to me as he closes his eyes and holds Seamus close. When gathered in the dining hall, I look around the room and think of each resident and aide, and wonder, what is their personal story? Like books on the shelf, they each hold secrets, lives of love & regret, adventures, education, family and experience. So many have shared their stories with me, if any of you know of someone in that situation and don’t know what to say in conversation, you could always offer to read to them! You cannot imagine the joy that it will bring you both! In closing, I would like to share this with you. I received a Thank You card from a gentleman who would come into the shop about 6 times a year. He would fill his arms with hardcover fiction, usually mysteries & suspense books, for his 92 year old mother who lived in Vermont. She passed away in April, and he sent me a thank you card that said… “On a recent visit to my mother, before she passed, I found her propped up in bed with books in piles around her. I asked her if I could remove the books from her bed. She in turn said, ‘Why? This is my idea of Heaven!’ Thank you for helping my mother have her idea of Heaven through your books” Until next month…may Tattered Pages be your Summer Connection for your summer reading pleasure! FINANCIAL FOCU$ Keep Your Investments from Going on “Vacation” It’s that time of year when many of us hit the road for a summer vacation. If you are fortunate, you will be joining them — after all, “all work and no play” is a difficult way to live. But while you may not think it beneficial to work all the time, the same can’t be said of your investments and your investment strategy — because, ideally, they should never stop laboring on your behalf. How can you avoid “taking a vacation” as an investor? Here are a few ideas: • Don’t let your portfolio get “lazy.” Laziness is fine for vacations, but it’s not so great for an investment portfolio. When you invest, it can be easy to let things drift along and stay the same as they’ve always been. But over time, things can change: Your goals can change somewhat, your family situation can certainly change and even your investments themselves may change. That’s why it’s important to review your portfolio and your investment choices regularly, possibly with the help of a financial professional. You may not need to make drastic changes, but even modest-seeming adjustments may make a big difference down the road. • Don’t choose an investment mix that just “sits around.” If you were to put all your investment dollars in conservative vehicles, such as certificates of deposit (CDs), your principal would likely not experience much volatility — which is good. But your money almost certainly would
with Jerry Pittz
not have the growth potential to help you reach your long-term goals — which is not so good. That’s why you will need to own some investments, such as stocks and stock-based instruments, that offer growth potential. It’s true these investments will fluctuate in value, and there’s no guarantee you won’t lose money on them. You can help address this risk by focusing on the long term and by creating an investment mix that is suitable for your situation. • Don’t become a “spend-happy” investor. It can be pretty easy to spend more on vacations than you had planned. For some reason, perhaps the carefree nature of a vacation, the act of spending money seems less grounded in reality — until you get home and see the bills. As an investor, you can also get carried away with your transactions — and it can cost you. To be specific, if you are constantly buying and selling investments, you’ll be making it harder for yourself to follow a unified, longterm investment strategy. As mentioned, you will need to make changes as needed, over time, to your portfolio, but making moves such as chasing after “hot” investments, or giving up on other investments after one bad period, will likely not benefit you and could prove detrimental to your progress. As someone who spends most of your life working, you may very much appreciate your vacations. But as someone trying to achieve important financial goals, such as a comfortable retirement, you shouldn’t take a “vacation” from investing — and you shouldn’t let your investments take one, either. As you know from your career and your other activities, making a consistent effort may pay off — and it’s the same with investing.

YMCA Golf Tourney To Benefit Annual Campaign The Bethlehem YMCA has a slogan that describes its mission. It’s not a catch phrase and it’s not a sales pitch. It’s a philosophy of what the Y is all about, because it is truly much more than a gym. The Y strengthens our community through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility, and we never turn anyone away for an inability to pay.
YMCA Golf Classic
To help support our mission, we rely on the generous contributions of people and businesses to our Annual Campaign. This year we are helping thousands of people from low income families take advantage of the Y’s programs and services through our Annual Campaign scholarship program, and the need keeps growing. The largest part of our Annual Campaign fund raising effort is the YMCA Golf Classic which is being held this year on August 3rd at the Edison Club in Rexford. The YMCA Golf Classic attracts hundreds of golfers from across the Capital Region and receives support from many area businesses and individuals that make donations for sponsorships at the event. The money raised by the Bethlehem Y is kept right here in our community to help our neighbors and friends.
camp at the Bethlehem YMCA for boys and girls going into grades 1 through 4. The camp will be held July 13-16 from 9:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. and can be combined with Y summer camp. Rich Hurley has been coaching high school basketball for over 19 years and has led his teams to multiple sectional and league championships, as well as a state championship. Fundamentals of both offense and defense will be taught in a fun, challenging, and fast paced format. There will also be a wrap-around YMCA day camp available where kids can be dropped off at Y camp as early at 7:00 a.m., attend basketball camp 9-1, and go to Summer Camp from 1-6 p.m. The basketball camp runs Monday thru Thursday. On Friday, campers will have a full day of summer camp with a field trip to FunPlex in East Greenbush. Registration for the basketball camp, wrap-around camp, and Y summer camp can be done at the Bethlehem YMCA, online at www.cdymca.org, or by mailing in a registration form with a check. For additional information contact the Bethlehem YMCA at 439-4394.

Route 66 Walking Challenge
Grab your sneakers and take a stroll down America’s Main Street – or Bethlehem’s Main Street, by taking the Bethlehem YMCA’s Route 66 Walking Challenge. This is a particularly good exercise opportunity for seniors who want to get or stay active and fit, but it is open to anyone. The YMCA will give you a pedometer to record how many steps you take during each day. At the end of each week, you can report your results to the YMCA and as you reach each stop along Route 66, you’ll earn prizes. The Route 66 Walking Challenge helps you increase your activity levels using the famous roadway as a guide. Regular walking can improve your health and help you lose weight and it’s one of the least expensive forms of physical activity. You can walk anywhere, at any time. Try walking at the YMCA, in your neighborhood, at a park, at the mall, on a treadmill, or at a track, wherever you enjoy most. Stop by the Bethlehem YMCA to ask about the Route 66 Walking Challenge and remember, active older adults over 65 can have their visits to the Y paid for through programs with their health insurers, including Empire Blue Shield, MVP and CDPHP.
