CAR CARE TIPS Motorists Are Warned “To See the Light” Every time you start your car they glow to greet you, but after a few seconds of engine operation they fade away - hopefully not to be seen again until the next engine start. We are urging motorists to heed their car’s cry for attention and be aware of the red and yellow indicators on the instrument panel that illuminate to let you know when a problem occurs. “Motorists need to be aware of the critical - ‘big three’ warning lights. They include those that monitor engine oil pressure, engine coolant temperature, and the vehicle charging system,” says John Nielsen, Director of AAA Automotive. “To reduce the chances of vehicle damage and/or a roadside breakdown, these warning lights require prompt and proper action when they illuminate.”
Engine Coolant Temperature The engine coolant temperature warning light commonly displays a thermometer symbol or the logo “TEMP.” When the coolant temperature light illuminates, the engine temperature has exceeded the safe maximum. Until the rise in coolant temperature is reversed, the engine will suffer accelerated wear. If the increase in temperature continues, major engine damage or catastrophic failure will result. If the coolant temperature warning light comes on, quickly assess the situation. Steam or liquid coolant coming from under the hood are clear indications of overheating and/or a leak. Pull off the road at the first safe opportunity and call for assistance. A lack of steam or leaking coolant does not mean it is safe to drive the vehicle. Continuing to operate an engine with an illuminated temperature warning light will result in a major damage and a significant repair bill. Caution! Boiling coolant can cause severe burns! Do not attempt to open the hood in the presence of excessive steam, and never remove the radiator cap when the engine is hot. The cooling system is under pressure and scalding coolant will be expelled with great force.
Charging System The charging system warning light commonly displays a battery symbol or the logo “ALT” or “GEN.” When the charging system warning light illuminates, the vehicle electrical system is no longer being supplied with power by the alternator.
To help motorists better understand the important role of these three warning lights, here is a brief explanation of each.
Warning Light Test When the ignition key is first turned to the ON position, all of the vehicle’s warning lights should illuminate. The “big three” lights typically remain on until the engine is started and running. If a warning light fails to illuminate at this time, have the related system checked out. Once the engine is running, all the warning lights should go out within a few seconds. If any light remains illuminated, consult your owner’s manual or the sections below for further information.
A charging system failure rarely results in serious mechanical damage, and of the “big three” warning lights, this one gives you the greatest amount of time to take appropriate action. Depending on the electrical demands of your vehicle, and the reserve capacity of its battery, you will generally have at least 20 minutes of daylight driving time before voltage drops to the point where the ignition system will no longer function and the engine will quit. Sponsored by Bob Buttercase of BAILY’S GARAGE 23 Oakwood Road
439-1446
Engine Oil Pressure The engine oil pressure warning light commonly displays an oil can symbol or the word “OIL.” When the oil pressure warning light illuminates, the engine has lost its supply of pressurized lubricating oil and severe engine damage or catastrophic failure can occur within seconds. Of all the warning lights, the oil pressure light indicates the greatest potential for serious mechanical damage, and also allows you the shortest time in which to take appropriate action. If the oil pressure warning light comes on and stays on: pull off the road immediately, shut off the engine, and call AAA to have your vehicle towed to an Approved Auto Repair facility. Unless you are in an extremely dangerous situation, do not attempt to drive the vehicle any farther. This can significantly increase the extent of any engine damage - turning a possibly minor repair into a complete engine replacement. 14

hours and hours. Then, she put two dogs together. Then three. And four. Finally, they could all be together without barking. The owner was left in blissful silence. So what exactly does Rachel do to tame these misbehaved pooches? She teaches dogs the way dogs teach each other. Dogs do not give each other treats or put another dog in a time-out. Dogs use voice (growling) and body language to train each other. Bark Busters uses the same philosophy. She explains it this way: if there are two dogs together, and one is being socially inappropriate (like jumping) the other will growl first, then possibly snap jaws if the first message doesn’t get across. Bark Busters gets the message across to the dog by praising the good, desired behavior. Another piece of Rachel’s interesting history is a book, published in 2007. Her book is a compilation of poems and readings appropriate for funerals, memorials and services. Many come from a famous person’s funeral, and is referenced as such. She was moved to put the pieces together after many years of requests for poems or readings for services. An example of what you would find in the book is the poem read at Jackie Onassis’ funeral service.

Reduce Your Risk of Falls
Improve lighting in all areas, but especially in stairwells. Wear firm shoes with good support and non-slip soles. If your home can’t easily be made safer or physical limitations prevent you from being safe, consider a move to an assisted living community where the floors are even, hallways are wide and staff can assist with your needs.
Watch out for medication side effects. Look at Did you know that falling down is the leading cause of injury for adult Americans age 65 and older? According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, each year 35 to 40 percent of older adults fall at least once, leading to serious injury and/or broken bones. Many falls can be avoided by preventing the circumstances that cause the mishap. Below are four simple steps that can be taken to significantly reduce your risk of injury from falling.
Improve your body balance with exercise to prevent falling. If you don’t have an exercise program, start one. It is never too late. Exercise improves your strength, body balance and flexibility which can decrease your risk of falls. Specific exercises, like Yoga and Tai Chi, improve balance and coordination, but any simple exercise is good. Try to incorporate some form of exercise, about 15 minutes a day, to improve your overall health. Be sure to consult with your physician before starting any new exercise program to make sure it is right for you.
Increase your homes accessibility and safety to reduce falling risks. About half of all falls happen at home. Work to de-clutter your home by removing items you might trip over like stacks of papers, books and shoes, on floors, stairs or in areas where you walk. Remove throw rugs. Keep items within arm’s reach and avoid using step-stools and ladders. Have grab bars installed in the bathroom and use non-slip mats.
24
all of your medications, both prescribed and over the counter, with your Doctor. A discussion about each medication’s side effects can help you to be informed of the risks. Some medications may cause increased dizziness or drowsiness which can increase your risk for falls, so understanding the pattern of these side effects can help you avoid danger.
Have your vision checked regularly. Visit your eye care provider at least yearly. Low vision from conditions like cataracts and glaucoma can increase your risk for falls. Wear glasses as prescribed, make sure areas are well lit, use a walker or cane to assist in maintaining stability. Falls can cause serious injury, but simple steps can help to reduce the risk of falling. Talk with your doctor about your risks, and ask friends and family to help you implement the changes necessary in your home and lifestyle to keep you safe.

Ask the
Canterbury Vet Q: My vet just recommended I microchip my pet. Why should I have my dog microchipped? I have a collar on him. What about my cat? A: There are many different methods of identifying your pet including collars, tags and tattoos, but none of these provides a complete solution for lost pets. Collars can fall off and be lost and tattoos can be altered, but microchips are permanent. On average, eight to 10 million pets are lost in the United States each year. Only 22 percent, find their way home after they’ve reached a shelter or animal control. That is in large part due to a lack of proper pet identification. Microchipping is the best way to help reunite lost pets with their owners. In the United States, fewer than five percent of pets are microchipped. In the United Kingdom, where microchipping is a more prevalent pet safety practice, more than 47 percent of lost dogs make it home.

No Job TOO BIG or TOO SMALL
A microchip is a tiny, totally inert electronic transponder about the size of a grain of rice. The chip is implanted into an animal using a simple, painless procedure similar to a routine vaccination. For most animals the chip is implanted in the loose skin over the pet’s shoulder blades. This procedure takes seconds and does not require anesthesia. Once implanted into the animal, the microchip remains inactive until read with a scanner. The ID number is registered with the microchip company who maintains the owner’s contact information. After implantation, the device remains with the animal for life. Once the microchip is inserted it would require a veterinarian to surgically remove the chip. While it is recommended that all dogs and cats are microchipped, they should still wear visible forms of identification – collars for dogs and breakaway collars for outdoor cats. While the local animal shelters and animal control officers all have microchip scanners, the average person on the street who finds a missing pet will not have a scanner. Please send all your veterinary questions to Dr. Estra at: AskTheVet@canterburyvet.com or mail them to Ask the Vet c/o Canterbury Animal Hospital 88 Delaware Avenue Delmar, NY 12054

A letter from Bethlehem Town Hall Dear Our Towne Readers: As your town’s Supervisor, it is my responsibility to not only do my best to move our Town forward in ways that are best for the entire community, but to also report on where we are and where we should be going. From day one, Bethlehem’s financial well being, openness, ethics, professionalism and quality-of-life have been the guiding principles of all my work as Supervisor. As I look at all aspects of our Town, as I consider what is going on all around us, at national, State and other local government levels, I will tell you that Bethlehem is in excellent shape, and I believe getting even stronger in each of these guiding principles. Town officials and Town staff strive for excellence, and deal responsibly with always competing priorities. Residents and businesses are involved in the community and should be involved in government. It is your government. Attend a Town, Planning or Zoning Board meeting to see what is going on. Check out the Town’s website (http://www.townofbethlehem.org/pages/news/ showTownCal.asp) to see the range of things happening that may interest you. Government works better when you are involved. So please, volunteer, attend meetings, get involved! Here are recent highlights of several excellent and important Town initiatives: Vista Technology Campus – Following months of work by the Town and Bethlehem Industrial Development Agency (BIDA), all required organizations have now approved the BIDA financing plan for Vista Boulevard and associated water, sewer and electric infrastructure. This entire project has been a creative example of how government and the private sector should work together when they have shared interests. Vista will create a strong economic activity center and a major revenue and job source for Bethlehem. This Comprehensive Plan priority, which languished for more than six years, is now marching forward.

The Rail Trail – A 1.9 mile section of the Rail Trail will formally open on National Trails Day, Saturday, June 4th. Albany County, Hudson Mohawk Land Conservancy and the Town of Bethlehem have partnered to share responsibilities to open and maintain the trail. The Town now has a new recreational and open space resource, running from the Veteran’s Memorial Park in Delmar to the Fireman’s Park in Slingerlands. The Town will manage the small amounts of additional work within its existing budget. This has been a wonderful example of government and a not-forprofit organization teaming up to take positive action, particularly considering that the $8 million needed to open up the full 9-mile trail was not likely to happen any time soon. Local Waterfront Revitalization Program (LWRP) - The LWRP has now been submitted to the NYS Department of State for Federal and State review. With a study area stretching 7 miles north to south, and from the Hudson River westward to the thruway, the LWRP establishes a vision and policies to guide future public and private investments and development. The LWRP will create a balance between future development and the protection of the unique environmental and heritage along the riverfront. The plan outlines regulatory tools that will help bring about the envisioned future for the waterfront as well as an implementation schedule with some financing mechanisms for consideration. There is no doubt that an approved LWRP for Bethlehem’s Hudson River waterfront is a major step in managing this beautiful and unique treasure to protect its recreational and open space value, and to favorably position Bethlehem to apply for future grants. Slingerlands Historic District – The Town has acted to create a Slingerlands Historic District, the Town’s first, encompassing 73 historic homes and buildings. The district will run along New Scotland Avenue. Our Town Historian and volunteers have worked diligently on this project, which will be submitted to the State board of Historic Preservation and then onto the National Register of Historic Places for approval. This project is a winner from every point of view: there are no restrictions on property owners, tax breaks may become available to businesses in the district, and it will be an honor for Bethlehem to receive this designation. Remembrance of Tom Little – Sometimes the small things truly do count a lot. For instance, the new memorial bench and flowering tree in Town Hall’s front lawn, dedicated to the life and service of Dr. Tom Little, a former Bethlehem resident, who died

at the hands of rebels of Afghanistan, where he volunteered to provide ophthalmic rehabilitation eye care services to people who needed help. At the small ceremony, his wife Libby said that “This will be the place in the United States where she will come to remember Tom.” It is important that Bethlehem reach out beyond our borders sometimes to show what community means to us. Looking to the future, my State-of-the-Town message set forth a plan for the future and we are focused on results! Economic Development – With the Vista Technology Campus now moving forward, we will direct our efforts to the Selkirk Rail Yard Area, the next appropriate location for economic development that will bring jobs and revenue to our community to help hold down taxes and provide for other community enhancing opportunities. And I hope you noticed the new fresh look of many retail establishments around town (examples include Town Squire Plaza and Glenmont Plaza) and new infill of retail stores along Delaware Avenue. There is less than 5,000 sq. ft. of space vacant at this time on our major commercial corridors and we are working on that! We have not forgotten that retail is part of the vital fabric of our community. The Town’s Financial Well-being – As we look at our financial situation rolling from 2010 to 2011, and for the first four months of 2011, our revenues are up and costs are down in all funds. This is all good news. Our departments have done a good job at holding down costs, and the improving economy and census results have helped too. Our job here at Town Hall will be to manage these positive results in a way that is financially sustainable in the longer run. The 2012 budget process will begin soon, and once again, our Town faces significant challenges in terms of increasing costs, particularly for employee retirement and health insurance. In 2011 we implemented the first ever Capital Program budget to deal with our infrastructure needs (water, sewer and facilities). Now we must, for the 2012 budget, get a more detailed plan for investments that need to be made over the next four years to replace costly and aged water and sewer systems, meet our longer term building needs, and evaluate the options and impact of actions on you – the taxpayers.
Quality Planning and the Preservation of Open Space – In Bethlehem, to improve the quality of life, we must pursue balance as called for in our Comprehensive Plan. That means that we must advance significant planning initiatives. The work plan that has been developed as part of my management approach with our Planning and Economic Development Department calls for actions in the following areas: PaTHs 4 Bethlehem; Citizen Advisory Committee on Conservation; Agriculture and Farmland Protection Program; Delaware Avenue Hamlet Enhancement Study; Local Waterfront Revitalization Program (see above); Route 9W Corridor Study and Zoning Revisions. You can be sure that you will hear more on these programs in the following the next few months. 20/20 Implementation Advisory Committee – The volunteer 20/20 Implementation Advisory Committee co-chaired by George Leveille and Terri Egan was instrumental in supporting the Vista Technology Campus project and the Unification of Bethlehem’s Water System, resulting in economic development benefits and major cost reductions. Now the committee is presenting its “21st Century Town Governance & Management Structure” report. A number of forums, hosted by the Town and the League of Women Voters are being conducted to inform the public and to listen to their perspectives. I would emphasize that this is the first step in a long process to consider: extending the supervisor’s term of office from 2 to 4 years; creating appointed rather than elected positions for some organizations; strengthening the supervisor’s authority to appoint or recommend appointments; and various forms of internal consolidation. Any initiatives will have to benefit the Town financially or improve efficiency and effectiveness, and, in my opinion, be, at the very least, neutral (and more desirably, favorable) for the individuals involved. (No changes would affect any current office holder or those running for office this year.) I hope everyone is looking forward to a fine summer and I look forward to the progress, that I know we will make in Bethlehem Town government. In Bethlehem, that means making a fine community even better. Excelsior, to pursue excellence, is the journey we are on and should be on. Sincerely, Sam Messina

Going Green at GreenFest BCS students singing songs of peace with local singer Ruth Pelham
By Erin Brozek
On April 29 , Bethlehem Children’s School hosted their th
3rd annual GreenFest fundraiser. This one has been the most successful and excitement-filled ever! With games, face painting, food, a garage sale, craft vendors, baskets, performers, and a Bouncy-Bounce, this GreenFest did not disappoint. Towards the end of the day, local singer Ruth Pelham arrived and invited the students to sing along with her, which the students did enthusiastically.

Mary Rea “LAST BUS TO CLARKSVILLE” I was saddened to learn that Clarksville Elementary School is closing its doors at the end of this school year. My son and daughter attended Clarksville and even now at ages 20 and 23, they still fondly reminisce about the staff and students who were an important part of their “elementary school family”. From a parent’s perspective, I liked that it gave them a small school atmosphere nestled in a country setting with the Helderbergs serving as a backdrop to the playground. What a wonderful learning environment to begin their educational journeys while being part of the Bethlehem Central School District. Webster’s dictionary defines school as, “A place in which persons are instructed in any species of learning; an educational establishment; a place in which instruction is imparted to the young.” This definition only describes a small part of Clarksville Elementary School’s impact on the lives of its students. Beginning with the first bus ride to a colorful kindergarten classroom, staff worked together as a team to provide the surroundings that would enable and encourage learning as well as the development of social and emotional skills in each child. I believe that many of the necessary skills and attitudes a child needs to be successful in life are nourished in this classroom. It kind of reminds me of Robert’s Fulghum’s inspiring poem, “All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten”. My favorite line in the poem reads: “Take a nap every afternoon.”…… how nice would that be! Over the years I saved a lot of my children’s early schoolwork in folders. while writing this article. Their schoolwork, particularly the artwork, brought back some great memories…… and some good laughs. I’m still trying to figure out what some of the pictures are supposed to be of! Both folders are filled with a variety of K-5 assignments. Some of their favorite works were their autobiographies, holiday stories, book reports, story books written by themselves, science projects and the “Egg to Chick Journal” (check out the picture!). Also among these souvenirs were dozens of “Clarksville Elementary School” certificates that were awarded each June for anything and everything, ranging from intramural programs to music performances and perfect attendance to most improved.
I remember seeing one musical act with our little performers chugging across the stage carrying a cardboard train engine while the Monkees song, “The Last Train to Clarksville” played over the PA system. Sadly, the last bus ride to Clarksville is taking place this June.
a chaperone on the Bronx Zoo field trip taken in 5th grade. Standing behind the glass and seeing the gorillas in their natural habitat was so awesome. I never thought I’d get that close to one and the kids and I still talk about that trip to this day. My children made many friends at Clarksville. Some of those friendships have carried over into their young adult lives and they still stay connected (we all know phone calls are obsolete) through the internet and texting - long live Face Book! One has to wonder how their children will one day keep in touch! Over the years it was a pleasure meeting staff and parents when attending school functions. Today, when we meet around town, we all wonder, where did the time go? Their students and our children are in, or have recently graduated from college. Yikes….oh…..btw….I’ve noticed that parents and staff look the same…..forever young! I’m sure all of BCSD’s elementary schools do a fine job in developing the skills and attitudes of our young students. In fact, our school district was one of the reasons why I choose to live in Bethlehem. I guess I’m just partial to Clarksville. The school gave my son and daughter the best of both worlds…..a superb curriculum taught in a little school setting. Thanks Clarksville Elementary for making a positive contribution in my children’s lives and the lives of so many other students. Talk to you soon.
I also found pictures which sparked memories of classroom holiday and birthday celebrations, chorus recitals, the annual Halloween marching parade, the beloved Clarksville marching band and exciting field trips. I loved being

Greetings fellow readers…
May presented as one of the rainiest months this past spring. Nothing compliments a rainy day or night than a good book! I finished the fifth book in the “Fae” series by Karen Marie Moning on a rainy afternoon here in the shop. This paranormal adventure in modern day Dublin did not disappoint with its intense concluding book. I was bleary-eyed as I finished; immediately considering my next book “getaway”. Reading is a very inexpensive means to “get away.” Reading can take you away to another place, another time, even another realm. Reading can temporarily take your mind off your troubles as you involve yourself in the dilemmas, exploits or problems of a good story! When led by the author, we often step out of our own shoes and into those of the author who may effectively change our perspective or bring us into the midst of a setting or situation foreign to our reality. I have seen a rise in interest, here in the shop, in Science Fiction, Paranormal romance, Historical Fiction, Westerns and Adventure. When faced with the problems of today, an escape into a futuristic fictional setting can whisk you away for just a little while from your troubles. Though written years ago, here are some series that remain popular: Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings series, Stephen King’s Dark Tower series, C.S. Lewis’ Chronicles of Narnia, George R.R. Martin’s A Game of Thrones, Brian Jacques’ Redwall series as well as the various novels written in the Star Wars , Star Trek, Magic, Dresden Files, Babylon 5 series. All Science Fiction Books will be an additional 10% off in June! Another popular series of books that can “take you away” are historical fiction. Steeped in historical fact, places and events, historical fiction, is interlaced with fictional characters, alternate scenarios, as well as factual events, peoples and time. They may illuminate an earlier time in a way that nonfiction may not. Recurring customer’s favorite authors in the field of historical fiction: Tracy Chevalier, Bernard Cornwell, Philippa Gregory, John Jakes, Diana Fuller Ross, Wilbur Smith, and Susan Wiggs. Perhaps a “getaway” to a simpler way of life might interest some. Writers Wanda Brunstetter, Shelley Shepard Gray, Beverly Lewis, Beth Wiseman and Cindy Woodsmall are just a few of the ever growing number of authors who set their stories among the Amish of our country. Some books, written as series, often show the lives, loves and dilemmas of those living within the Amish communities in the past and present.
Here are some suggestions of great books for children that take them away: Magic School Bus by Joanna Cole & Bruce Degen Great illustrations & a great teaching resource as Miss Frizzle takes her class off on incredible adventures around the world, into the environment, across the universe and even inside our bodies! Great lessons for both young and old. Magic Treehouse by Mary Pope Osborne . Oh what adventures Jack and Annie are whisked away on from the Amazon to the Moon to the dawn of time! Your independent reader will enjoy these fun filled adventures. They also make for great bedtime stories to read to your children. Guardians of Ga’Hoole, Dear America, Royal Diaries by Kathryn Lasky This acclaimed author has written a wonderful variety of chapter books for children in grades 4-8. The Guardians series, 15 in all, weave a tale in mythical land of owls, knights, townspeople and villains. Dear America: historical fiction journals of immigrant children in America. Royal Diaries are filled with life and times of such historical figures as Queen Elizabeth I, Marie Antoinette and Mary Queen of Scots. Middle School and Up: Artemis Fowl, by Eion Colfer is a series of books with currently 7 books in the series. The main character is a young boy-genius who is the last in line of a legendary crime family teetering on the brink of destruction. With the assistance of his bodyguard, Butler, he masterminds his plan to regain the Fowls’ former glory: capture a fairy and hold her ransom for the legendary fairy gold. This series delivers not only endless action but also witty wordplay, dialogue, understated humor, and plenty of magical technology and gadgetry. Harry Potter by JK Rowling continues to be popular with readers of all ages. My new personal favorite for Junior High thru adult is: The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins. As of this writing I am finishing book 2 in the series. The New York Times Book Review said: “At its best the trilogy channels the political passion of 1984, the memorable violence of A Clockwork Orange, the imaginative ambience of The Chronicles of Narnia and the detailed inventiveness of Harry Potter.” I couldn’t put it down! Many years ago I promised my husband that I would write a book. While a teacher and young mother, I thought it logical that I should have one good children’s book in me. I have toyed with the idea…but have never committed to the task. Like a foggy memory from my early motherhood days, this story sits waiting to unfold onto paper. Something more urgent in life always seems to get in the way (an excuse, I know). Perhaps, like anything new, it takes the first step, a lot of confidence, and determination. I want to give a shout out to a local author, Christine C. Slingerland, who took that step and had her first book, Descent into Madness, published this past year. Christine set her book in Schenectady, Niskayuna and the Adirondacks. In a very interesting format, Chris presents each character’s point of view in each chapter as this story of suspense unfolds. Kudos Chris for making her personal dream a reality!

FINANCIAL FOCU$ Explore Different Options When Purchasing Bonds
with Jerry Pittz
not change its holdings. And since no manager is involved in making changes or trades, a UIT has low management fees. A UIT is typically established for 20 to 30 years, but, as an individual investor, you can sell your shares whenever you want, for whatever the market will bear.
As an investor, you may find that bonds can be a valuable part of your holdings. But there’s more than one way to own bonds, so you’ll want to be familiar with the various investment vehicles available — because the more you know, the better the choices you’ll be able to make.
Although UITs can be some of the most cost-efficient, low-risk options in the fixed-income arena, they are not without risk. Specifically, since a UIT’s bonds provide fixed interest rates, there’s always the possibility that the bonds will lose purchasing power to inflation over time.
So, let’s look at three popular ways of owning bonds:
When choosing how to own bonds, you’ll need to evaluate many factors — and we’ve only looked at some of them. You may want to consult with a financial advisor to determine which methods of bond ownership are appropriate for your needs. By doing your homework, and getting the help you need, you can maximize the advantages of adding bonds to your investment mix.
Individual bonds —When you buy an individual bond, you will receive predictable interest payments. And when your bond matures, you’ll get the original principal back, unless the issuer defaults, which is not common in cases of “investment grade” bonds. However, the value of your bond — the price you could get for it if you sold it on the open market before it matured — will fluctuate over time, primarily in response to interest rates. (When market rates go up, the value of your bond drops, and vice versa.) In general, you’ll pay at least $5,000 for an individual bond, though that amount may vary. Consequently, while this approach gives you more control, it can be more time consuming and require a larger investment in order to build a diverse fixed-income portfolio. Bond funds — By investing in a bond-based mutual fund, which may own dozens of different types of bonds, you can efficiently increase your diversification, which is important, because diversification can help reduce credit risk (although it can’t guarantee a profit or protect against a loss). A bond fund does not pay you a fixed rate of return; instead, you receive dividends, which will fluctuate based on the underlying bonds’ interest rates and capital appreciation. In addition, bond funds don’t have a maturity date when principal is repaid. Keep in mind that when you purchase bond funds, you could be subject to capital gains taxes in two different ways: if you sell your fund shares for a profit or if the fund manager sells an underlying bond for more than it’s worth. This increased capital gains liability is one reason that many people put bond funds in a tax-deferred vehicle, such as an IRA or a 401(k). Bond UITs — A unit investment trust (UIT), like a mutual fund, contains a variety of bonds, so you get the benefit of diversification. Unlike a mutual fund, however, a UIT is not actively managed and does 44

DELMAR MOMS AND DADS REACH THE BEACH IN A 200 MILE MARATHON RELAY It was a brutally cold day early January when I met up with my running friends for another winter beating in the name of staying in good running shape. As we dodged the ice chunks of our Delmar streets and wondered what the Bahamas would be like if we could be there at that very moment, my friend Dan invited us to join the "reach the beach" inaugural run that would take place in May in Massachusetts. He mentioned that it would be a relay race over 200 miles in length which would end on the beach of Westport. My befuddled mind wrapped itself around the word beach and I soon found myself joining the members of Team Whippet Good. The roster of Team Whippet would include six men and six women all in the 40 and up range. Our team formed through word of mouth and mainly consisted of Mom's and Dad's of the local Delmar Track and Field club. The team would include a fine mix of serious marathoners, adventure seekers, and parents who generally like a challenge but may not have run serious miles recently. The challenge involved two vans and the ability to be able to withstand running in shifts through a twenty four hour period with little chance for sleep but lots of chance for adventure.
The profits from the Garden Tour are used to establish and maintain public garden areas in the Town of Bethlehem.

Our group met a few times to review the lengthy rule handbook. We reviewed that we must wear reflective gear at all times. We were required to run the night shift outfitted with head lamps and red blinkers on the front and back of our bodies. We fretted that we runners were not allowed to dodge into the woods to relieve ourselves if necessary but were to wait until we reached the baton change station in order to use the port o johns to avoid being disqualified. We mused that it would be impossible to be discrete while dressed like a blinking Christmas tree anyways. We were to observe quiet hours as we made our way through towns and villages as quiet sojourners sharing the road with Massachusetts drivers who were busily going about their daily lives. We made lists of food items to eat. We argued over vegetarian/organic verses replacement drinks or chicken and beans. We packed our sleeping bags with the hopes that we may have time to spread out in between shifts at various designated stop offs on the 200 mile route. On Thursday night before the big race I laid awake trying to figure out how over 1,000 runners would quietly and safely make the 200 mile race over hill, dale, suburb and country lanes on their quest to make it to the beaches of Westport.
On Friday our group met excitedly for team pictures. Most of us had not known each other before this race and yet we committed to sitting in vans together for over 24 hours. Each runner on our team received our legs and we were responsible to run our best and be ready to support our teammates as they ran theirs. We arrived at the start among the myriad of 300 vans all decorated in team regala. We were to start the first leg at the ski mountain in Wachusett. We wished our front runner Leah Giordano luck as she lead our relay with a leg that traversed upward over the mountain. The rest of our twenty four hours together was described by one of our team members as entering into a different dimension or in others words "being squeezed through a worm hole" as we raced to meet each other at each station and supported each other. I remember briefly crawling into my sleeping bag during the light evening rain and happy to catch an hours sleep before my 12:40 am baton exchange when I was to run a five mile leg before my am 8 mile leg.

We worked together through the night and set up two hour camp sites for resting areas in designated meeting areas. At one time I looked around to see hundreds of runners strewn in sleeping bags along the sidewalks of a local high school at a designated "sleep section". Vans quietly traversed through the night. I was running in head lamp gear past the local vfw as closing time was occurring and out pops all these patrons scratching their heads and trying to chase after me out of curiosity, drunkenness or confusion... I am not sure which. One in particular was dressed in big red devils horns with the moniker "wicked soles" taped onto its sides. Good thing they aren’t runners... What is Asthma? Asthma is a chronic lung disease that impacts about 22 million Americans. Over a quarter of those are children. People with asthma can have a lower quality of life, more missed school or work, more emergency room visits, and more hospitalizations. The good news is that asthma can be controlled by avoiding triggers and proper use of medications! Asthma causes difficulty breathing in two important ways. When your lungs become irritated, your airways become narrow and tight which makes it difficult to move air in and out. During an attack, your lungs can also produce thick mucus that blocks the airways. What causes asthma? There are many different factors that can contribute to asthma. Some are genetic, meaning you can inherit traits that make you more likely to develop asthma from parents or grandparents. Some causes are environmental allergens or irritants such as cigarette smoke and air pollution. How do I know if I have asthma? Your doctor can diagnose asthma by doing a physical and asking about your symptoms such as: ◊ Wheezing, or a high-pitched whistling sound when you breathe out ◊ Cough that is worse at night ◊ Chest tightness ◊ Difficulty breathing Symptoms can be worse at night, during exercise, infection, when allergens or irritants are present, when the weather changes, while experiencing strong emotions or stress, or during a menstrual cycle. How do I avoid asthma triggers? Everybody responds to environmental allergens and irritants in different ways. Here are some tips to follow to control exposure to some triggers: ◊ Tobacco smoke - Do not let anyone smoke around you, your home, or your car. ◊ Dust mites - Encase pillows and mattress in dust mite covers. Wash sheets, blankets, and stuffed animals in hot water once a week. Remove carpets from bedroom if possible. ◊ Animal dander - Keep pets with fur outside or out of your bedroom at a minimum. Keep them off furniture if possible. ◊ Cockroaches - Keep food outside of the bedroom and in airtight containers. Use traps or sprays to remove them. ◊ Pollen and outdoor mold - Keep windows closed and avoid going outside on days the pollen count is high. ◊ Indoor mold - Fix leaky plumbing, clean moldy surfaces, and dehumidify basement. ◊ Sulfites in food - Avoid beer, wine, shrimp, dried fruit, and processed potatoes. ◊ Cold air - Cover your mouth and nose with a scarf when you go outside on cold days. ◊ Vacuum twice a week. Wear a dust mask or use a vacuum with a HEPA filter or double-layered bag.

Some medicines, called controllers, are taken every day to reduce inflammation and prevent asthma symptoms. All patients with persistent asthma should have controller medications. Some people with moderate or severe asthma may take more than one kind of controller medicine. Relievers, or rescue medications, are used as needed to relax airways and relieve symptoms during an attack. Everyone with asthma should have a rescue inhaler. If your asthma is in good control, you should need less than 2 to 4 rescue inhaler per YEAR. Keeping a diary of when you use the rescue inhalers can help you and your doctor determine how well controlled your asthma is. You can also take the Asthma Control Test to find out how well your asthma is controlled (http://www.asthmaactionamerica.org/i_ have_asthma/control_test.html). Take the test results and your medication diary to your doctor’s office. It is important that you know when and how to use each of your medications. Be sure to ask your doctor or pharmacist if your medicine is supposed to be used every day or just when you need it to relieve symptoms. It is also important to use the inhaler correctly. There are many different kinds of inhalers and each has a different technique for use. If the right technique is not used you may not be getting the medicine into your lungs where it needs to be. The next time you have a doctor’s appointment or pick up a prescription, ask your doctor, pharmacist, or other healthcare professional to review how to use your inhaler. What do I do if I have an asthma attack? What you do during an asthma attack depends on how severe your asthma symptoms are. Some asthma attacks can be managed at home by using a rescue inhaler. Other attacks need to receive immediate medical attention. When you are diagnosed with asthma, ask your doctor to help you develop an Asthma Action Plan. This is a written plan that you can take home. It will help you keep track of when to take your asthma medications, what triggers you should avoid, what to do when you experience symptoms, and when you should seek immediate medical attention. Where can I get more information about asthma? The best place to get more information about asthma is from your doctor, pharmacist, or other healthcare professional. Malocclusion What is malocclusion? Malocclusion means having crooked teeth or a “poor bite.” Orthodontic treatment can correct the way teeth and jaws line up. Dentists who are specially trained to correct malocclusion are called orthodontists. They use a variety of treatment tools and techniques (including braces ) to move teeth, and sometimes the jaw, into the right places. What causes malocclusion? A common cause of malocclusion is teeth that have too much or too little room in the jaw. If children have a small jaw, their teeth may grow into a space that is too small. As a result, teeth may grow or drift out of place. Other causes of crooked teeth include thumb-sucking, pacifier use, and tooth loss. What are the symptoms? The most obvious sign is teeth that are crooked or stick out. Malocclusion can range from mild to severe. Most of the time, having crooked teeth is only a cosmetic problem, meaning people don’t like the way their teeth look. But in severe cases, it can cause problems with eating or speaking. How is malocclusion diagnosed? A dentist usually checks for malocclusion in children during regular dental visits. If the jaw or teeth are out of line, the dentist may suggest a visit to an orthodontist. The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that all children get a checkup with an orthodontist by age 7. An orthodontist will: Ask questions about your or your child’s past health problems. Check the mouth and teeth. Take X-rays of the face and teeth. Take photographs of the face and teeth. Make a plaster model of the teeth. Start your child’s trips to the dentist at age 12 months. This will help your child get used to seeing a dentist. It will also catch any early problems. Keep up with regular dental checkups 2 times a year. How is it treated? In children and teens, the first step in treatment may be to take out certain teeth to make room for teeth that may still grow in. The next step is to attach braces to teeth to straighten out the bite . In addition to straightening teeth, braces can help move a child’s jaw into the right position. Teeth tend to move forward as you age, even after treatment with braces. Retainers are devices you wear in your mouth to keep your teeth from moving. Some people need to use retainers for many years after treatment. Adults can successfully straighten their teeth with braces. webmd.com/oral-health
