Greetings Constant Reader,

Well, as I write this on a cool, damp May morning, I have to remind myself that “time or tide waits for no man!” Time can be so kind and yet also so cruel! In just reflecting upon it another second has passed…and life moves on. When you receive this it will be June, a month that always seems so full of activity that there aren’t enough days! Time…when you are young it seems to tick very slowly. A school day seems almost endless when all we want is to be home riding our bike, playing with our pets, participating in sports, heading for the pool or being with family and friends. As an older student it can mean graduation, moving up, leaving friends, looking for jobs and a much fuller social life. As a parent, June brings a change & often a challenge to scheduling what life brings from doctor appointments, to sports, summer programs, vacation and the responsibilities of a home owner. Time… it is constant, and yet we are each effected by it in a very personal way. A dear friend of mine is dealing with time in a very unique way to her…40 weeks. At the end of that 40 weeks her life will change forever! That life of being “your own person” will now morph into that of a Mom with someone else impacting her day, her time, her life. One thing which has always been constant with this friend is her love of reading. I know that she will share this love with her “little bean” once born. I will have tons of reading suggestions, you can be sure! I hope that you all will be able to find time to read this summer!

I realize that not everyone shares my love of reading. For whatever reason, they may not see reading as I do, a way to entertain, educate and escape! I also think of it as exercise for the brain, a weapon against boredom, and the most affordable get away. I have such respect for the “storyteller” from the beloved elders of my family, to our parish priest, to my teachers, my friends, my children and grandchildren…a good storyteller has a true talent that has been respected for thousands of years. I think of those gathered around a fire, sharing oral tradition, telling tales that are generations old. Time is woven into the fabric of all of our personal stories. As I have more years behind me, than ahead, I have been reflecting about those years behind me. Sharing time with my Darlin’ Dad who is 88+yrs is often bittersweet as his memory remembers in a very different timeline.

Sometimes 50 years ago is clearer than his morning! The other day I went through a string of questions that I often do when he seems a bit off normal. He told me my name was “Heartbreak”! I laughed and said, “I certainly hope not!”. He said “Well at least you look pretty today!” We laughed…and as we recalled some events, his beautiful blue eyes cleared their fog and he said, “Donny”. “No, I’m not Donny!” He said, “Of course not, my son is Donny, you are my Patricia!” Yup, and always will be. I took out a book of prayers and read to him as he demonstrated more clarity. He even remembered Seamus’ name. He held on to Seamus as we discussed how books have always had an important place in our lives. He reached out for his Bible & prayer books and started, “Your mother loved those”.

Yes, she did. Books for reflection, study, comfort, they too filled the bookshelves in their home. I have a wonderful religious, spiritual & self-help section here in the shop.

June will be a time when more people will come in search of books to read on vacation. A recent series of customers were off to vacations in Europe, Caribbean, Disneyworld, Arizona, California, Oregon and various camping/RV parks. Packing a book, small enough for the carryon, but packed with enjoyment for under $5…not a bad deal, don’t you think? As your children prepare for summer reading, don’t head to the “Full Price” shops, ask me first, all you need to do is give a call, or drop me a request on Facebook or e-mail. I can always beat those prices, get books out of print, and meet your needs for at least 25% off original prices. If you have a trade credit account, that means 45% off!

With summer comes garage sales, which are great, but I must put out that reminder: “Tattered Pages will take up to 6 clean, odor-free books at a time for trade credits” I will take up to 12 children’s books. I do not purchase books, but might be able to help you find someone who does. Trade credits will take an additional 20% off books purchased in the shop. There are some that feel that by “donating” books they are helping me…I have been overwhelmed lately with people who I have to remind of the store policy. I am not the answer to their problem!!! True readers understand that. Those who have done business here, understand that. As I enter into my 10th year at Glenmont Center Square, I want to thank the thousands of customers who have made this possible.

Tattered Pages is not a hobby…it is my business, my way to pay my bills, meet the store’s financial obligations, but also allow me to send off gifts to my grandchildren, nieces/nephews as well as make donations to local charitable organizations for their fundraisers. Supporting this Small Business helps a fellow “Glenmonter” help support others in our community as well, such as books donated to a local VFW and money sent to Blue Star Mothers.

With June comes my new Summer Hours created so that I can spend some more time with family. The only big difference is on Thursday. The shop will be open M, T, W 10-5, Th. 10-3:30, Fri. 10-7. Sat. 10-2, Closed Sunday.

My current book that I am reading is “Library of Souls” by Ransom Riggs (3rd in the Miss Peregrine series). Perhaps I will see you this summer here in the shop, or at the Bethlehem Town Park Pool swimming & reading…not at the same time though, it could get messy! Until next month…

Canterbury Vet National Microchipping Month The month of June is associated with summer, the end of school, swimming pools, hiking, barbecues and fireworks.

Did you know that summer also means more lost pets at animal shelters? Therefore, the month of June is National Microchipping Month, and all pet owners are encouraged to microchip their pets if they haven’t done so already.

A study conducted by the American Veterinary Medical Association, found that dogs are 2.5 times more likely while cats are 21.4 times more likely to be returned to their home from a shelter if they have a registered microchip. By microchipping your cat or dog, you can greatly increase your chances of being reunited with your pet in the event that it becomes lost.

A microchip is a permanent form of identification designed to last the lifetime of your pet; the chip cannot wear out, break or need replacement. The microchip itself is a passive device; there is no battery or power source. About the size of a grain of rice, the chip is enclosed in an inert bio-glass bead and becomes activated when a scanner passes over it. Using Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology, a scanner reads the microchip’s radio frequency, which then transmits a unique identification number that’s nine, ten or 15 digits long.

The microchip is implanted into the skin between the shoulder blades with a needle. It is only about as uncomfortable as your pet getting a vaccination. While your pet does not need to be sedated for the procedure, microchips are often implanted during procedures such as spaying and neutering. It only takes a few minutes and after a quick scan of the chip your pet will be ready to go.

In order for the system to work you must activate the microchip by registering the number with the appropriate registry service. This can easily be done online or over the phone. Be sure to update the registry service with your new contact information whenever you move, change phone numbers or email addresses. It is important to note that the microchip is not a GPS. Additionally, the microchip does not store your pet’s medical information.

But how does a microchip help a lost pet reunite with its owner? A found pet that is picked up by an animal control officer or taken to a shelter or animal clinic will be scanned for a microchip. If a microchip is found and the chip contains up-to-date contact information, the microchip registry would then be able to contact the owner.

When a pet becomes lost or missing a microchip is a simple way you can increase the chances you will be reunited with your beloved cat or dog. Ask your veterinarian how you can get your pet microchipped. If your pet is microchipped, make sure your contact information is up to date with their microchip registry.

A Look at Four Houses as Seen in 1992

This month’s then and now takes a look at four historic homes that have undergone significant changes in just 25 years, two for the better, two for the worse. The 1992 pictures that inspired this article come from a draft copy of a historic structures inventory completed in 1992 for the town’s Land Use Management Advisory Committee.

The Ironweed House on New Scotland Road in the hamlet of Slingerlands was transformed from an over grown mess to an elegant painted lady. It is known as the Ironweed House because scenes from the move Ironweed were filmed there in 1987. Ironically, the production wanted the rundown appearance of the home. The house dates from 1876 when it was built for Charles and Eunice Hammond. Charles was a Superintendent of the Delaware and Hudson Railroad. The longest owners of the house were the Dillenback family.

In 1926, Garrett and Adele Dillenback purchased the house from the Saxtons (who had purchased it from the Hammonds in 1911.) Their son, Garrett Vander Veer Dillenback, Jr. was a graduate of M.I.T, who pursued a career in engineering receiving a U.S. patent for a “television motor structure” in 1930. His 1993 obituary notes that he held other patents related to the inventing the facsimile process. He was a dedicated Ham radio operator and his obituary states that he “received an Air Force Commendation Medal for maintaining radio communications between Air Force personnel in Thule, Greenland, and their familied during he Cold War.” He lived in the Slingerlands house until

1964 when he moved to Selkirk. The Slingerlands house fell into disrepair, finally coming into the hands of the Tryon family after Dillenback’s death.

Marc and Eileen Tryon are responsible for the home’s remarkable transformation.

Less is known about the simple, vernacular farmhouse at the corner of Feura Bush Road and Elsmere Avenue. The town’s records indicate that it was built in 1890, but it could very well have been constructed earlier. The 1854 Gould & Moore map has a W.H. Haswell on the site. This is back when Feura Bush Road was still known as the Clarksville and Albany Plank Road. Maps from 1866 and 1891 carry on the Haswell name. These Haswells were descendants of John and Mary Haswell who came here from England with their 10 children in 1774 aboard the Golden Gate. John Haswell rented 300 acres from the Patroon near today’s Haswell Farms development. Sometime around 2004, the house began its transformation to the tidy home it is today.

The Gerrit Oliver House located on Meads Lane near Delaware Avenue has been slowly returning to the earth for many years now. It is possible that this house dates to the early 1700s. References indicate it was the farm of Garret Oliver, Jr. and his wife Mary Ann VanDerHeyden. There is a nearby family burial ground on Meads Lane where several members of the extended Oliver family rest, including Revolutionary War veteran Aaron Oliver and his wife Christina. A quick search in Bethlehem Revisited reveals many members of the Oliver family that contributed to life in Bethlehem. Included are two Revolutionary War veterans (Aaron and John), three veterans of the Civil War (Aaron, Andrew and George), two for the first World War (Charles and John) and five for World War II (Chester, George. Robert, William and Charles). Some remember John Oliver, town

supervisor from 1942 to 1959. Also in the book is Joanne Oliver, a teacher at the elementary level with Bethlehem Central from 1945 to 1978.

The Ironweed House in 1992 and 2008.

Another house that is long gone but remembered by many is the Jacobson-Blessing house. It was located off of Krumkill Road. Today, the roundabout at Schoolhouse Road has a stub that would have led to the house. Jacob Jacobson built the house in the 1850s and it came to his daughter Mary after her marriage to John L. Blessing. Mary and John Blessing are the ones that enlarged and updated the farmhouse giving it its distinctive Empire style and massive mansard roof. A couple of interesting tidbits turn up in a search of old newspapers. The home was the subject of a burglary in 1872 when the premises were robbed of an overcoat, vest, dress coat and several articles of jewelry, and again in 1874 when the home was entered while the family was at church and several pieces of silver were stolen. John and Mary had three children, Marion, Willard and Edward. They are buried side by side at the Prospect Hill Cemetery in Guilderland.

The house passed to different owners through the years, and eventually came down in the mid1990s.

FINANCIAL FOCU$ Financial Gifts Can Help Dad for Years to Come Father’s Day is almost here. Dad will probably like any gift you give him, of course, but this year, why not go beyond the ordinary? By presenting your father with an appropriate financial gift, you can bring him some benefits that can keep on giving.

For starters, how about a back-to-school gift for Dad? If you have children, you may already be familiar with 529 plans, which many parents use to help their children pay for college. But 529 plans have no age limits, so there’s nothing stopping you from reversing the usual formula and opening an account for your father. While 529 plans are commonly used to pay for four-year colleges, the money can also go toward most two-year community colleges and trade schools, so if Dad has a future interest in learning about anything from anthropology to auto repair, the 529 plan you’ve established can give him the gift of knowledge and enjoyment.

As the owner of a 529 plan, your earnings can accumulate tax free, provided they are used for qualified higher education expenses. (529 plan distributions not used for qualified expenses may be subject to federal and state income tax, and a 10% IRS penalty on the earnings.) Furthermore, if you invest in your own state’s 529 plan, you might be able to deduct the contributions from your taxes.

Here’s another suggestion: Help Dad reach a distant goal.

For example, if you know your father will be retiring in, say, 10 years, you could give him some type of bond that matures just when he retires. During those 10 years, he will receive regular semiannual interest payments, and when the bond matures, he’ll get the original principal back. He can then use this money to help fulfill a long-held dream –

perhaps one of traveling the world or even opening a small business. Whatever he decides to do with the money, it will make a nice retirement gift.

If you’re giving Dad a corporate bond, make sure it’s “investment grade,” which means it has received one of the highest ratings for safety from one of the major bondrating agencies. Investment-grade bonds are generally the least likely to default. If your father is in one of the upper tax brackets, he might benefit from a municipal bond, whose interest payments are exempt from federal income taxes and possibly state and local taxes, too. (Some municipal bonds, however, are subject to the alternative minimum tax.)

Finally, you may want to help Dad plan his legacy. Although your father may be interested in what sort of legacy he will leave, he may not yet have taken any steps in this area – in particular, he might not have created a comprehensive estate plan.

You might consider giving your father some resources on estate planning, such as books or online articles. Better yet, though, consider setting him up with a consultation with a legal professional. It will take considerable time and effort to create the necessary documents, such as a will, a living trust, a durable power of attorney, and so on – and since the future is not ours to see, it’s best to take care of these tasks sooner, rather than later.

Father’s Day is just a blip on the calendar. But by giving Dad some valuable financial gifts, you can help brighten all his days.

LOCAL SPECIAL OLYMPIANS STRIVE FOR FUN The automatic doors opened at the entrance to the Bethlehem YMCA, letting out a gentle blast of warm air to welcome athletes from across the region who were looking to escape the cold wind and snow.

They made their way to the indoor running track. Some bolted up the stairs, others wheeled into the elevator.

For 15 people ranging in age from 12 to 56, they were not coming to the Y for just a simple workout; they had their eyes on a summer weekend when the state Special Olympics tournament comes to Siena College, June 16-18.

Now, fast forward to a mild May evening at the Bethlehem High School track. The Special Olympics athletes have moved outside into the sunshine and warmth to continue their many weeks of training. Their work ethic is amazing and their smiles are contagious.

Bethlehem YMCA member Barry O’Keefe has been head coach of the Thunderbolts Special Olympics team for 10 years. After the Special Olympics track season moves through the local, regional, and finally the state meet at Siena on June 16-18, he will coach the local Special Olympics softball team.

“We have a great coaching staff and family participation,” O’Keefe said. “We’ve got folks that come from home, some live in community residences, and some folks that live independently on their own and we are looking for more participants.”

Christopher Williams started Special Olympics track nine years ago. His mother, Bonnie Hildenbrand of Fuera Bush, said: “I think it makes him feel great. I enjoy being here with him and working with him. He loves it. He interacts with the other folks and it’s great for him to get to know other people.”

Assistant Coach Jeff Touchette of Albany said the athletes, coaches and families are a tight-knit group. “It is inspiring,” Jeff said. “Everybody comes together and has each other’s back. Some of the older guys show the young kids what it means to compete. It’s good for them to get this kind of social interaction. It’s great to see them show up and give it their all.”

Shazear Wright of Albany has competed in the Special Olympics for two years and is doing the running long jump this year for the first time. He is excited about running, but cautions, “you have to stay in the lines.”

Maria Farnam of Rotterdam is both a parent and a Special Olympics coach. She appreciates the positive impact the Olympics have had on her daughter Taylor. “I love the Special Olympics. It changed my daughter’s life. She has a lot more self-confidence than she had before. She’s just a completely different kid. It’s awesome. Everybody accepts everybody. You don’t care if you come in first place or second place, everybody is happy.”

Coach O’Keefe thanked people in Bethlehem who have stepped up to help the Special Olympians, including Mark Thurman at the Bethlehem YMCA, Dave Swift, owner of Swifty’s, who held a fundraiser for the Special Olympics softball team so they could buy new uniforms, and the Town of Bethlehem for use of the fields at Elm Ave park softball fields.

The local Special Olympians’ extensive training may bring them medals and ribbons at competitions, but the rewards for results pale in comparison to the smiles, joy and laughter of the team’s journey along the way.

Bethlehem Garden Tour and Plant Sale

Plant Sale: 3-7pm | Garden Tour: 4-8pm The 2017 tour takes place on June 14 from 4-8 pm. Gardens of varying sizes have been selected to showcase the beautiful flora and landscape in the town of Bethlehem. Travel with ease in your own vehicle on this self-guided tour to view each of the stops along the way. Garden owners and Club members are available at each garden to provide direction and answer questions. Proceeds from the tour support gardens and other community enhancement projects of the Bethlehem Garden Club.

Ticket sales take place on the day of the tour ONLY. The cost remains at $15 a person, and this is the tenth year at the same low cost. Tickets are available for purchase between 4:00 and 6:00 at the Plant Sale at Delmar Presbyterian Church (see location below) or in the PARKING LOT of the Slingerlands Price Chopper Plaza (NOT in the store.)

The “ticket” is a brochure with a map, driving directions, descriptions of each garden, and local restaurant discounts available to ticket holders on the day of the tour.

Annual Plant Sale There is no ticket required to attend the Plant Sale.

Our perennial Plant Sale takes place from 3-7 pm on the same day as the Garden Tour, and is held at the Delmar Presbyterian Church, 585 Delaware Avenue. Both professionally-grown plants and member divisions are offered for sale. Please join us at this year’s event to support your community and enhance/expand your gardens. Proceeds from this portion of the event go to fund Educations Grants awarded to local schools.

The Bethlehem Historical Association celebrates the opening of their summer exhibit, Bethlehem 100 Years Ago, with an Ice Cream Social on Sunday afternoon June 11 from 1 to 4 PM. Bethlehem 100 Years Ago takes a particular look at what our town was like during World War I. Highlights include the Woman’s Land Army farm in Selkirk and the WWI veterans that honored their fallen comrades annually as part of the Last Man’s Club. Our center exhibit area recreates a kitchen scene circa 1917. Military memorabilia will also be featured.

Come and enjoy a free sundae made from ice cream courtesy of Stewart’s Shops. The Cedar Hill Schoolhouse Museum is located at 1003 River Road in Selkirk and will be open Sunday afternoons from 2 to 4 PM June 11 through the end of October. Admission is free.
