5 reasons to have a web site
How will a web site benefit my business?
Having a well-built web site can greatly increase your sales and exposure. Potential customers are searching the web everyday for the same products and services that you provide. Here are just 5 excellent reasons to have a web site: 1) Consumers search online for many products and services before they even think about calling or stopping by. Your business should be accessible to these consumers 24/7, as many web searches for products and services occur during non-business hours. 2) You can educate consumers about your business while they are comparing places to shop. Consumers tend to have more confidence in a business that they know more about. 3) Keep your customers close by. With a web site, you are able to use features such as auto responders, e-mails, web forms, and many other forms of interactivity to keep in touch with customers 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Your business will be accessible to customers and potential customers around the clock. 4) It's professional! You can put your web site address on business cards, advertisements, logos, letterheads, and much more. A business with a web site gains more desirable leads than a business without one.
5) Consumers demand it. With more and more people using the internet to shop around, they are expecting businesses to have a web site that they can visit. It gives them insight on your business, as well as the products and services you have to offer. If they aren't finding your business online, they are finding someone else.
Choosing the right web designer is also a critical factor. Make sure to ask the following questions: >Will my web designer be around when I need maintenance to my site? >Are they local and provide a reasonable turnaround time? >Do they provide services that will help build my online presence as my business grows? >Are their prices competitive and in line with their experience? >Do their current clients have positive feedback to provide? >Do they have an online portfolio to display their abilities? Guinea pigs’ teeth grow continuously, just like those of all other rodents. It is important for you to give your guinea pig a piece of wood that he or she Q: My kids want to adopt a Guinea Pig. Do they can gnaw on to wear make good pets? What can I expect from a Guinea his or her teeth down. Pig?
Ask the
Canterbury Vet
A: March is national Adopt A Guinea Pig month. These adorable little creatures can make great family pets. The guinea pig is quiet, does not demand constant attention, has relatively low-cost upkeep, yet is very affectionate. A guinea pig is often thought of as a good pet for children, and this is true, but as with all pets, parents must make certain the child is old enough to be gentle with the animal and mature enough to care for it properly. A guinea pig is a sociable animal and needs a home where it will receive attention and affection. Guinea pigs generally live for five to seven years and are very sociable animals. They bite only when very frightened, usually from such things as mishandling or fear of a threatening animal. Children caring for guinea pigs should always be supervised by an adult, since these animals need to be treated gently. One of a guinea pig’s most endearing traits is his tendency to whistle when excited by someone coming into the room or offering a special treat. Always keep the cage indoors away from drafts and extreme temperatures. The bottom of the cage should be lined with wood shavings or some other form of safe bedding. Do not use cedar or pine chips - the oils they contain can be dangerous to the animal. Timothy hay is a good choice of bedding. Be sure to change the bedding often enough to keep it dry and odor-free. Guinea pigs love to hide when they play, so be sure to place cardboard tubes or other “toys” in the enclosure. Guinea pigs can be allowed to run free in one room to get additional exercise, but the room should be carefully checked for openings from which the guinea pigs can escape, get lost and possibly end up hurt. These animals must be supervised when they are loose because they will chew on anything in their paths - including electrical wires. It is essential to provide a guinea pig with enough vitamin C. You can feed oranges and other high-C foods such as kale and strawberries. You can give your guinea pig small amounts of fresh fruit and vegetables to complement his or her basic diet, but always make sure to clean up any leftover fresh food before it spoils. Grass hay should be made available. It’s great for the digestive system and will satisfy your pet’s need to gnaw. Fresh, clean water should be available at all times. Use an inverted bottle with a drinking tube, and change the water daily.
Guinea pigs are social animals that prefer to live in small groups. If necessary, two young males generally can be kept together, but fighting usually breaks out among adult males. Several females can be kept together without problems, however. Since guinea pigs, like all rodents, multiply rapidly, keeping males and females together is not recommended. Consult with your veterinarian for more about having a Guinea Pig as a pet. Please send all your veterinary questions to Dr. Estra at: AskTheVet@canterburyvet.com or mail them to Ask the Vet c/o Canterbury Animal Hospital 88 Delaware Avenue Delmar, NY 12054

Health Matters
Greasing the Groove It’s been approximately two months since New Year’s Day, which means it’s been approximately two months since you made your New Year’s Resolution(s). So… how’s it going? Historically, the overwhelming majority of us fall off the New Year’s Resolution Wagon somewhere between six-eight weeks afterwards, right around Valentine’s Day (scientific connection or chocolate-induced “coincidence”?).
without collapsing by this date). Whatever your goal, break it into reasonable, manageable-for-you chunks that you can check off. 3) Stop thinking that more is always better. Rest is equally important to muscle and endurance gains. Among many athletes – weekend or otherwise – rest has become a “four-letter word”. FACT: your muscles cannot, repeat, cannot get stronger unless they are given time to repair. 4) Accountability. Find someone or something that holds you accountable for reaching your goals. Just remember: no shaming allowed and don’t “should” all over yourself.
The problem many of us have with making lasting changes, whether it’s quitting smoking, losing weight or stopping any habit that stands in our way of living a healthy life, is having a “perfectionist” attitude. And before you roll your eyes and mutter, “yeah, well, I’m not a perfectionist…I can never do anything right!”, let me point out, as my then-teenage daughter did to me years ago, that THAT is the very definition of a perfectionist. And expecting that we should be able to get to a point where we can push the automatic pilot button once and for all, and never again struggle with bad habits can only set us up for failure. Progress, not perfection, as they say. And that’s not news to most of us, but do you really, honestly believe it and act accordingly? There is a training method in Russian kettlebell lifting called Greasing The Groove (GTG), which in its essence, is repeating a movement at regular intervals over the course of the day, but never to excess or “to failure”. The result is improved movement and strength gains without risk of injury. GTG translates well when pursuing other goals. Repeating a new action consistently but not obsessively and overdoing it, will help make it a new habit much more easily! Also…. 1) Don’t tackle too many changes at once. If one or two is good, more is not better. Those afore-mentioned perfectionists know what I’m talking about. This is a surefire route to throwing the baby out with the bathwater. And speaking of babies… 2) Take baby steps. If you’re going to make a majorfor-you change, don’t set yourself up for failure by only looking at your ultimate goal. If your goal is to lose 100 pounds of body fat, or deadlift 300 pounds, or run 5k without stopping, make a time lime with mini-goals (e.g, lose 5 pounds by this date; run to the end of your driveway 14
Remember: success doesn’t mean perfection; life is messy and your path will rarely be linear. Keep going, keep expecting it to be challenging, and keep greasing that groove!

David LaPlante | Guitar Maker It was an advertisement placed in a magazine that opened the door to a passion that would last a lifetime. David LaPlante was 16, broke, and wanted his own guitar. The ad that caught his eye read, “YOU can build a guitar for $20.” It sparked the imagination of a young man who loved music. A new guitar it seemed, was unattainable. But building his own? For $20? That he could do. With the money he earned mowing a few lawns, and the help of his woodworking father, David built his first guitar. 102 guitars later, he is slowly and steadily handcrafting classical guitars one at a time in his workshop/studio in Selkirk, NY. In fact, LaPlante is a highly respected luthier whose pieces are played and collected worldwide. There is only a bit of David’s first guitar left today. He played that instrument throughout his high school and college years. Eventually it was taken apart, pieces used for other guitars. Though that first guitar is long gone, he does have his first music partner. Steven Pounds, the guy that David starting making music with in 1965, his friend and collaborator, is still with him today. They are two of the folk trio all-She-wrote. Rounding out the trio is David’s wife, noted singer/songwriter, Gloria Jean. Before there was the trio, before guitar making, even, there was a love of nature. Growing up in Connecticut, David spent much of his time outdoors. He became interested in taxidermy and came to know the preparators at Yale University. His mother would drive him there after school so he could watch the work of the professional taxidermists. Those men became friends and mentors. His early interest in the outdoors and preparing and exhibiting wildlife led to a degree in zoology, which, he says is similar to instrument building. He explains: “Taxidermy work is allied very closely with instrument work in that it’s very sculptural. It’s threedimensional. It seems like it would be separate. But it isn’t.” David’s work as a zoologist brought him to Albany in 1974. The New York State Museum was being built, and he was hired as a curator. At the museum, he built the mastodons, the mountain lion, caribou, and was responsible for preparing the birds in the bird hall. This interesting and sculptural work kept David engaged for 20
all of thirty-eight years. He worked on the exhibits, and eventually moved to a managerial position. All the while, he quietly built guitars, one at a time in his workshop. When he was promoted to supervisor, the work at the museum became less hands-on. His focus slowly shifted, and he started building more guitars. There were times, however, that the guitars had to be put on the back burner. He remembers frantically finishing the 9/11 exhibit. Two days before it was set to open, the carpet wasn’t laid, as his installer went home with a toothache. Knowing the governor was coming to speak and the event would be attended by many, he worked non-stop. It was times like those that the guitars played second fiddle, so to speak, to his work at the museum. But in David LaPlante’s heart, all of those years, were guitars. Building guitars. After building his first, and a few for friends, he began selling his creations. “Once I built the first one, I enjoyed the aesthetic. And the instrument itself. So I just kept doing it.” Originally making steelstringed guitars, David now makes classical guitars exclusively. The classical variety was just more interesting to him. He even went to Spain for a summer to study with Jose Luis Romanillos, a renowned classical guitar maker. His interest in different musical styles and study in Spain resulted in David emerging with a singular style for one-of-a-kind instruments. The process for creating a guitar is a complicated one. The wood she uses are from all over: spruce from Europe, rosewood from India, mahogany from South America, spanish cypress from the Mediterranean region and maple from the Northeastern United States. He starts by thicknessing and sanding the wood. This creates an ultra-thin surface. The wood is sliced through the center to create two thin pieces, and the grains are matched. Sometimes a decorative seam is added, sometimes not. The wood is about 2.5 millimeters thick on the back of the guitar, and the edges are tapered. The bracing (the support on the soundboard and back of the guitar) is glued in. The sides are bent and formed on a hot pipe. The guitar is built and assembled on a fixture. Trim is added. The neck is attached. The

whole thing is finished with a technique called “French Polish” in which shellac is applied with a special cloth. David is especially careful with the shellac. A thin finish is optimal for the sound of wood. A heavy amount of shellac will mask the true sound of an instrument. Ultimately, David is striving for an instrument that plays well and has presence. Each note on his guitars is strong and clear. His approach to guitar-making hasn’t changed much in forty five years. Rather than jumping from one technique to another, he has built his style very carefully and thoughtfully. “Over the years, I have worked at improving things incrementally. It’s a very systematic approach. I experiment in subtle ways. The mode of construction I’ve followed for many years produces consistent results.” LaPlante’s guitars have been played in front of millions of people. Most notably, Noel Paul Stookey, the “Paul” of Peter, Paul and Mary has played a LaPlante exclusively for 20 years. Occasionally, David will see one of his guitars on television. He’s recognized them on the Phil Donahue show, the Tavis Smiley show, numerous PBS specials, Good Morning America and even the Democratic National Convention. David is also a noted historian and restorer of vintage C.F. Martin Guitars. He is currently part of a consortium that is working to publish a book tentatively entitled “C.F. Martin and the Invention of the American Guitar.” The book, which will be offered through the Hal Leonard Publishing Group, and concurrent major museum

exhibition is planned for 2013. Now retired from the museum, David dedicates his time to making guitars and together with his wife and friend, making music. They tour around the region playing coffeehouses and clubs. The all-She-wrote trio also plays locally at Emack and Bolio’s in Albany. It’s important to their group that they play locally, for free. David’s enthusiasm and passion for building and playing guitars is the same as when he was the 16-old kid back in Connecticut. Each guitar he builds becomes his favorite as he slowly and methodically pieces it together. He explains his retired life this way: “I spent 35 years subsidizing myself so I could build guitars exclusively. Now, I’m doing it. And I’m enjoying every single moment.” Interview and article by Caroline Barrett

Irish Soda Bread Recipe Ingredients 4 to 4 1/2 cups flour 2 Tbsp sugar 1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon baking soda 4 Tbsp butter 1 cup raisins 1 large egg, lightly beaten 2 cups buttermilk 1. Preheat oven to 425°. Sift together 4 cups of flour, the sugar, salt, and baking soda into a large mixing bowl. 2. Using a pastry cutter or two knives (can also use your fingers), work butter into flour mixture until it resembles coarse meal, then stir in raisins. 3 Make a well in the center of the flour mixture. Add beaten egg and buttermilk to well and mix in with a wooden spoon until dough is too stiff to stir. Dust hands with a little flour, then gently knead dough in the bowl just long enough to form a rough ball. If the dough is too sticky to work with, add in a little more flour. Do not over-knead! Transfer dough to a lightly floured surface and shape into a round loaf. Note that the dough will be a little sticky, and quite shaggy (a little like a shortcake biscuit dough). You want to work it just enough so that it comes together. If you over-knead, the bread will end up tough. 4 Transfer dough to a large, lightly greased cast-iron skillet or a baking sheet (it will flatten out a bit in the pan or on the baking sheet). Using a serrated knife, score top of dough about an inch or so deep in an “X” shape. The purpose of the scoring is to help heat get into the center of the dough while it cooks. Transfer to oven and bake until bread is golden and bottom sounds hollow when tapped, about 35-45 minutes. (If you use a cast iron pan, it may take a little longer as it takes longer for the pan to heat up than a baking sheet.) Check for doneness also by inserting a long, thin skewer into the center. If it comes out clean, it’s done.

Hint 1: If the top is getting too dark while baking, tent the bread with some aluminum foil. Hint 2: If you use a cast iron skillet to cook the bread in the oven, be very careful when you take the pan out. It’s easy to forget that the handle is extremely hot. Cool the handle with an ice cube, or put a pot holder over it. Remove pan or sheet from oven, let bread sit in the pan or on the sheet for 5-10 minutes, then remove to a rack to cool briefly. Serve bread warm, at room temperature, or sliced and toasted. Best when eaten warm and just baked.

What should I do when my child doesn’t want to stay committed to an activity? There are many schools of thought on whether or not to force a commitment from a child, or adult, for that matter. No matter which side of the fence you are on, there are some steps that should be taken to help reinforce commitment. Prior to having challenges, there are a few things that can be done to help avoid this quitter situation in the first place. First, prior to starting any program, get the child’s buy-in. Make sure the child knows what the commitment is and have him or her verbalize it back to you. This will allow you to reflect back on the promise made at a later date. Second, have a regular schedule. This, too, will help reinforce any commitment challenges (i.e., “It’s our commitment to go to practice every Tuesday and Wednesday). Always reward their commitment. For example, make sure you congratulate your son or daughter regularly for attending classes on a regular basis. Also, participate when possible. This should be done in more ways than one. If there are parent/child events, it’s important that you participate with your child. Not only will you build a bond with your child, but it will also help reinforce the importance of the commitment made. The other way to participate is to take part in activities put on by the business or school. These help keep everyone interested. Encourage your child to make
friends. The more a child is anchored to a program by having friends and family involved, the less likely he or she will quit. Finally, don’t just give in. On occasions, it’s okay to take a break from a class or an event, but make sure there is a followup commitment and stick to it at all cost. For example, “If you take off from class on Tuesday, I expect you to go to class on Wednesday instead. Can we agree on that?” This is a great way to prepare your child for many of the commitments he or she will take on throughout life. ’s Dewey

A letter from
Bethlehem Town Hall
always something to do here. Senior services are of great importance to many, and to all of us who value having a senior-friendly community.
What do you like most about Bethlehem? That question was asked as an ice-breaker of each member of the newly formed Governance Options Study Committee. The committee members’ answers, taken as a whole, paint a remarkable picture of our town, and I want to share them with you.
And even though no one mentioned it, I know that they appreciate good drinking water and sewers. The old expression about not missing your water till the well runs dry is very true. We don’t tend to think about these things until a system fails (usually very briefly), or when it’s necessary to dig up a road to repair or rebuild something. Like the roofs on our houses, infrastructure is not really fun to think about, but we have to make sure we’re taking the steps necessary to keep it in shape. OK, back to the fun stuff.
Perhaps the most frequently used word was “community” – in particular, that we really are one. Bethlehem residents share more than a municipal boundary, there is genuine concern for one another and a strong, smalltown feel despite being a community of nearly 35,000. The sense of togetherness and community, and the wealth of charitable, service and civic groups are all major factors making this a great place to live.
One person said the most exciting thing about Bethlehem is that we are on the verge of expansion, and that between the Vista technology park, the Selkirk yards and the 9W corridor, we could see significant commercial growth. Commercial development brings jobs and more affordable taxes for homeowners. Of course, growth can threaten some of the things we like most. That’s why the Town Board and I are committed to reviewing Bethlehem’s Comprehensive Plan that guides land use, and having an open discussion with the community about it.
A strong runner up in the answers was the schools. Almost everyone said that they originally moved to Bethlehem for the schools, whether BCSD, RCS, or Guilderland. That’s an important thing to keep in mind as all three districts head into a very difficult budget year. People also highly value St. Thomas and other nonpublic schools. Many of the committee members talked about the nice mix of rural and suburban areas, and the many choices in housing styles and neighborhoods. Several people observed that we have a strong sense of place in Bethlehem. They talked about the physical beauty of the town, about having a center and great neighborhoods, and also, again and again, about the sense of community. You don’t go to the supermarket or walk around Town without meeting friends. Of course, the many trails, creeks, rural and natural areas were mentioned prominently, not to mention the Hudson River. Bethlehem is a great town for walking, whether on a trail, sidewalk or on a neighborhood street. People also like being close to Albany, where many work, and living in a location with lots of exciting places nearby – the Adirondacks, Catskills and Saratoga, just to name a few. Town services were lauded – people appreciate good roads, leaf pickup and policing. Knowing that Bethlehem is a safe place really matters. People love the town pool, sports fields and the library. There is 32
Public discussion is always good. We all learn from each other, including when we disagree. I want to close with the comment one person made that I think really points the way to the future. It was said that the best thing about Bethlehem is that we share a determined commitment to make it a better place. What better thing could be said about our town? We will continue to face both opportunities and difficulties, including some very serious budget choices. As we do this, together, let’s keep in mind the many good things we have. Let’s also remember that the things we value require a community commitment. Sometimes these choices will be hard, but hard choices are usually the most important decisions we make. What do you like most about Bethlehem?

FINANCIAL FOCU$ Give Your Portfolio a
“Spring Cleaning” Springtime is almost here. If you’re like many people, the arrival of spring means it’s time to spruce up your home. But why stop there? This year, consider applying some of those same spring-cleaning techniques to your investment portfolio. Here are some ideas you may want to put to work: GET RID OF CLUTTER. You probably don’t have to look too far around your home to find things that are broken or simply no longer useful to you. If you poke around your portfolio, you might make similar discoveries: an investment that has chronically underperformed, duplicates another investment or met your needs in the past but is less relevant to your current situation and goals. Once you identify these types of investments, you may decide to sell them and use the proceeds to take advantage of opportunities that may prove more valuable to you.
with Jerry Pittz
clear branches away from your house, clean your gutters and downspouts, and take other steps to protect your property from the ravages of Mother Nature. And just as you need to safeguard your home, you’ll want to protect the lifestyles of those who live in that home — namely, your family. You can help accomplish this by reviewing your life and disability insurance to make sure it’s still sufficient for your needs. GET PROFESSIONAL HELP. You may find that you can’t do all your spring cleaning by yourself. For example, if your carpets and rugs are heavily soiled, you may need to call in a professional cleaner. Or if your tree branches have grown out of control, you might need to bring in a tree trimmer. Similarly, when you decide to “tidy up” your portfolio, you’ll need some assistance from a financial professional — someone who can study your current mix of investments and recommend changes, as needed, to help ensure your holdings are suitable for your risk tolerance, time horizon and short- and long-term goals. Spring cleaning can reinvigorate your home and your overall outlook. And by tidying up your investment portfolio, you can help gain some of that same optimism — for your future.

Greetings fellow readers, I love a good story. I love to hear people share tales of their adventures, their lives, the cute things that their children or grandchildren have done. I love information…my mom lovingly called me her bookworm… long before I could have the instant gratification of finding anything out almost instantly on the Internet…I would have to research through books. If I heard a word that I didn‛t know…I grabbed the dictionary/thesaurus. If something was mentioned in history, that I didn‛t know… I turned to the encyclopedia. Just as in the 1986 movie “Short Circuit” where the errant robot Johnny 5 searches endlessly for “input”, I would pour over encyclopedias, National Geographic, Time, Newsweek, Saturday Evening Post, Life, Reader‛s Digest…any printed word that came into my reach. The original Guilderland Library moved into a newly constructed site just around the corner from my house in Westmere, in 1969. My schools‛ library would only allow one book a week to go home, which I thought was most tragic! I remember when the library opened that I would take out books of Broadway plays, biographies of celebrities and saints, Alfred Hitchcock Short Stories, and the classics. I would save my first babysitting money to buy my own copies of “Heidi”, “Little Women”, “Kidnapped”, “The Five Little Peppers and How they Grew”, and “Lassie” at Woolworth‛s. Those books cost 65 cents at the time and I still have some of them in my collection. I loved when I had the opportunity to go to see a Broadway play with my high school. When I saw news of the Tony Awards, I would go to the library to take out books on the latest year‛s plays. At Mercy High I was in 3 plays, one was based on Shakespeare‛s heroines. I played Desdemona, had long Roman locks and called out from the back of the auditorium for assistance to find my missing handkerchief. I especially loved watching my friends embody each heroine. We each read our plays and met with our English teacher to understand the characters better. I still smile thinking of Johanna trying to stomp her foot and spit simultaneously while portraying an angry Kate from Taming of the Shrew. This love of the arts drew me more to books and the well written plot, the unexpected twists, the laughter, the fear, and if I didn‛t like the conclusion, I would re-write it in my mind. I love a good play, though I haven‛t been to Broadway in years. My last live play on Broadway was Les Miserables. (I can‛t wait for the musical movie that will be coming out) while attending Manhattan College with a fellow Principal one summer. She didn‛t have a clue of the plot… she didn‛t know the music! Watching the play with her was such a delight! Her mouth was open and her eyes wide with wonder as each scene unfolded. Seeing this through her eyes made the experience all the more 46
precious. Another time had a very similar experience. We had taken my parents to see “Phantom of the Opera” on Broadway. I spent as much time watching my mother as she squeezed my hand and shared tissues over this magical presentation. I love it when I share that similar enthusiasm of books. We sell plays, classic literature and books on music here at the shop and most days the shop is filled with the music of Broadway thru the broadcast Sirius XM “On Broadway” station (thank you Barb & Larry for that). One of the songs from Sondheim‛s “Passion” was playing the other day…I would like to share some of those lyrics sung by the aging Fosca who explains why she spends so much time with her books: ”I do not read to think. I do not read to learn. I do not read to search for truth I know the truth, the truth is hardly what I need. I read to dream. I read to live...in other people‛s lives. I read about the joys, the world Dispenses to the fortunate, And listen for the echoes. I read to live, I read To get away from life!” I have said before that books are the cheapest “getaway”. They can take you to ancient time…to far off lands… to worlds of fantasy. Books inform, educate, clarify, entertain…they can profoundly affect your life! They can be pure “fluff”. You choose…in our store we have over 18,000 titles…just waiting to be experienced. I would like to thank Donna Liquori, from the Times Union, for the incredible “shout out” she gave to me and Tattered Pages recently! You can view the article on TimesUnion.com if you didn‛t see it in the paper. Donna was researching “romance” novels and came to me for my opinion and insight. Romances and mysteries are our two biggest sellers in the store. I explained that romance is more than “bodice rippers”. I shared with her authors that write historical romance, such as Catherine Coulter… those that are set in the West such as Linda Lael Miller and Janet Dailey. I showed her that along with Catherine Coulter, Sandra Brown, Kay Hooper, Janet Evanovich, Linda Howard and Iris Johansen write both romance and mystery. I told her that romance has evolved from Harlequin to best sellers. I also reminded her that much of “great classic literature” were basically romances! “Wuthering Heights”, “Jane Eyre”, “Pride & Prejudice”, “Madame Bovary”…romances. I then shared my new love of urban fantasy and dystopian fiction that feature strong, courageous female heroines…not a fainting lily among them! She said that she had a new perspective on the genre. I told her that when they are well written… they are great…yes, there are some that aren‛t so well written…but even they have their own followers. One of my recent customers mentioned that when books are “too good” she slows down her reading speed, instead of speeding up, because she doesn‛t want the book to end! Cecelia, a regular at Tattered Pages, came in with her daughter to find more Catherine Coulter and Fern Michaels books. She informed me that in 2011 she read 450 books! She has already read over 70 this year! She has moved from Harlequins & Regency Romances to other,

more substantial authors. She is now trying mysteries (no graphic gore though!) so, of course I led her to the mystery cozy writers that I know. Another regular, Peg, went home with an armload of cozies including cookies, pie and chocolate in the titles…recipes…no gore! There really is something in our shop for everyone! Don‛t think that we have only “old” books… books….I recently put dozens of books published within the last 60 days. When asked… “Do you have anything new in here?” I look about the shop and often inform them of the newest published inventory and then say… “Hey, if you haven‛t read it before…isn‛t it new to you?” We would love to help you find just the right book for you in March. Until next month…I‛ll be reading Connie Willis‛ “To Say Nothing of the Dog” and Angela Bourke‛s “The Burning of Bridget Cleary”….when I can steal a moment!

Shingles:
What is it and How Can I Prevent It? According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), 1 out of every 3 people in the United States will develop shingles during their lifetime and anyone who has had chickenpox in their lifetime is at risk of developing the painful disorder1. Although shingles can affect any age group, more than half of all cases occur in adults over the age of 602.
vaccine before)1. The virus is transmitted by direct contact with the fluid from the blisters, therefore precautions such as covering blisters and frequent hand washing can reduce the risk of transmission2. Until the blisters heal over, patients with shingles should avoid contact with pregnant women and patients with a weakened immune system.
How can I prevent Shingles? Although there is no way to completely prevent shingles, the vaccine ZOSTAVAX reduces the overall risk of shingles by more than 50%4. Additionally, those who do develop shingles despite getting the vaccination are less likely to develop complications such as PHN4. This vaccination is approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for use in all individuals over the age of 50. Currently the CDC recommends the vaccine be given to those over the age of 601 due to concerns of supply shortages and the increased likelihood of complications such as PHN occurring in individuals over the age of 60. ZOSTAVAX is available by prescription from your doctor and may be covered by Medicare part D and other prescription plans. Check with your insurance provider as coverage and copays vary.
What is Shingles? Shingles usually starts as a painful blistering rash along one side of the body or face3. One to five days before the rash emerges, patients can experience pain, itching or tingling in that area. The blisters scab over in 7 to 10 days and the rash usually clears within 2 to 4 weeks. Anti-viral medications used as early as possible can decrease the length and severity of the illness. Treatment is important as more than half of people over the age of 60 who do not receive treatment will develop a complication known as postherpetic neuralgia (PHN)3. PHN is severe pain in the areas affected by the rash. In many cases the pain resolves within a few weeks to months following the infection, but for some it can last years2. Very rarely, shingles can lead to blindness, hearing loss, swelling in the brain, or death3.
What causes Shingles? Shingles is caused by the varicella zoster virus, the same virus that causes chicken pox. Shingles occurs in people who have previously had the chickenpox. Once the body fights a chickenpox infection the virus settles in certain nerves in the body where the virus remains dormant. For many people, they will never be affected again. However, for some individuals, the virus reactivates causing the blistering and pain we recognize as shingles2. It is not clear why the virus reactivates, but the risk for shingles increases with age2. Those who have a weakened immune system due to medications or other health conditions are also at increased risk for developing shingles2. Examples include patients with HIV infection or certain types of cancer, patients receiving cancer chemotherapy, or those who have undergone an organ transplant.
