Ask the
Canterbury Vet It may be difficult to believe but Spring will soon be here! As you get ready for spring, it is time to think about getting your dog ready for the nice weather ahead. Take a look around your yard and make sure that any winter hazards such as ice melt are put away. Once you are sure things are safe, allow your dog to run, romp and play in your yard. Take great care to insure that your dog is safe when left outdoors. A fenced-in yard is ideal and can serve well as a dog’s personal playground. Remember, a dog that has been inside for the winter is going to be excited when the weather turns warm. Don’t let his or her excitement be a reason to bolt through a break in a snow damaged fence to run from your yard into the path of an oncoming car or truck.
Head to the vet: Go to your veterinarian for a good check up so you can be sure your dog is ready to enjoy the great outdoors. Make sure vaccines, flea and tick medications, and other necessary precautions are all up to date. Make sure your dog is on monthly heartworm preventative. If you have missed doses over the winter, make sure to check with your veterinarian before giving any medication.
Begin to increase the exercise: Once the weather turns nicer, your dog will be enjoying more outdoor time. Try to gradually incorporate more exercise so that your dog becomes use to it. Once they have the chance to really get active, it won’t hit their body with such unfamiliarity.
Scope out the new play areas: Ask around about any dog parks, puppy play groups, or other fun activities that may be happening. This way, you can start planning what activities you will enjoy and learn what you will need in order to participate. Check the leash and collar: If you haven’t used your leash a great deal in the winter, now is the time to give it a good once over and buy a new one if needed. It is also a great time to think about a new collar. Check and make sure it still fits well but comfortably and that it is still in safe usable condition. Make sure your dog’s tags are still readable. Get ready to have fun! Get outside and enjoy the Spring with your four legged friend! Please send all your veterinary questions to: AskTheVet@canterburyvet.com or mail them to Ask the Vet c/o Canterbury Animal Hospital 88 Delaware Avenue Delmar, NY 12054

Then
& Now Business Blocks of the Delmar Four Corners By Susan E. Leath The crossroads of Delaware and Kenwood Avenues have been a focal point of Delmar since the days when it was still known as Adamsville. The area has seen many changes over the years from the dirt roads of the horse and buggy era to the passenger cars of the railroad commuters; from the macadam roads and Model T’s of the early 20th century to today’s high tech automobiles and buses. Businesses and buildings have come and gone but the Four Corners remains a community center. The late 1920s and early 30s were a bustling time for the Four Corners. The completion of the viaduct over the Normanskill in 1928 made travel between Albany and the Delmar/Elsmere area easier. While still catering to locals, Delmar businessmen saw the opportunity to lure Albanians out to the suburbs and began reenvisioning the Four Corners area. Substantial brick buildings like the Bank of Bethlehem, Delmar Theatre, the Paddock building and the Wood Building, all sizable commercial buildings, were constructed during this era. It was also about this time that the name Delmar Four Corners began appearing in advertising. 22
Seen here about 1915, the original Paddock’s store was located in this wood frame building at the corner of today’s Delaware Avenue and Paddock Place. Across Delaware Avenue in another wooden building was the Delmar Hotel, a hotel, dance hall and saloon operated by Mr. Crum. The Paddock store building was demolished in 1985 soon after the Four Corners Luncheonette moved out. Today the lot is part of Swifty’s Pub.
The same corner is seen in the mid 20th century. Notice the changes to the front porch and roof lines of the old store. Next door is Lang’s Department Store that houses today’s Swifty’s. To the left is the Paddock Building, a business block built in 1928 with room for stores on the first floor and apartments second. In the foreground on the corner is a glimpse of the Tydol gas station attached to the Wood Building.
The same corner as seen today.
Susan E. Leath serves as Bethlehem’s Town Historian. She is the author of Bethlehem an illustrative history of our town with over 200 images dating from the e 1880s to 1960. The book is available at local booksellers and online. Visit her blog at: BethlehemNYHistory.blogspot.com. Susan welcomes your suggestions for future Then and Now articles. She can be reached at sleath@townofbethlehem.org
A closer view of the Paddock Building when Libbey’s Restraunt was there. Note the heavy balustrade, or railing, around the roof line. Howard P. Paddock was a real estate developer, insurance man, and prominent Delmar booster. Paddock was concerned about the orderly development of town and was instrumental in forming the town’s Planning Board. He served as its chairman from its inception in 1944 until his death in 1969.
Two views of the Wood Building are seen here. According to a 1988 Spotlight article it was built by Bennett Wood for his son Thomas. Shops like Woods 5-10-25 Store, Carroll’s Pharmacy and Tad’s Men’s Shop were on the first floor with apartments above and a gas station on the corner. The imposing brick building was removed in 1974 to make way for today’s Key Bank building. Arthur Starman ran Carroll’s Pharmacy from the late 1930s until about 1960, when he sold it to Al Warner. Damian Schnur and Bennett Wood founded the nearby Schnur and Wood Feed Store.

Irish Soda Bread Recipe Ingredients 4 to 4 1/2 cups flour 2 Tbsp sugar 1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon baking soda 4 Tbsp butter 1 cup raisins 1 large egg, lightly beaten 2 cups buttermilk
APPLIANCE REPAIR Bob’s
439-0912
1. Preheat oven to 425°. Sift together 4 cups of flour, the sugar, salt, and baking soda into a large mixing bowl. 2. Using a pastry cutter or two knives (can also use your fingers), work butter into flour mixture until it resembles coarse meal, then stir in raisins. 3 Make a well in the center of the flour mixture. Add beaten egg and buttermilk to well and mix in with a wooden spoon until dough is too stiff to stir. Dust hands with a little flour, then gently knead dough in the bowl just long enough to form a rough ball. If the dough is too sticky to work with, add in a little more flour. Do not over-knead! Transfer dough to a lightly floured surface and shape into a round loaf. Note that the dough will be a little sticky, and quite shaggy (a little like a shortcake biscuit dough). You want to work it just enough so that it comes together. If you over-knead, the bread will end up tough. 4 Transfer dough to a large, lightly greased cast-iron skillet or a baking sheet (it will flatten out a bit in the pan or on the baking sheet). Using a serrated knife, score top of dough about an inch or so deep in an “X” shape. The purpose of the scoring is to help heat get into the center of the dough while it cooks. Transfer to oven and bake until bread is golden and bottom sounds hollow when tapped, about 35-45 minutes. (If you use a cast iron pan, it may take a little longer as it takes longer for the pan to heat up than a baking sheet.) Check for doneness also by inserting a long, thin skewer into the center. If it comes out clean, it’s done.

Hint 1: If the top is getting too dark while baking, tent the bread with some aluminum foil. Hint 2: If you use a cast iron skillet to cook the bread in the oven, be very careful when you take the pan out. It’s easy to forget that the handle is extremely hot. Cool the handle with an ice cube, or put a pot holder over it. Remove pan or sheet from oven, let bread sit in the pan or on the sheet for 5-10 minutes, then remove to a rack to cool briefly. Serve bread warm, at room temperature, or sliced and toasted. Best when eaten warm and just baked.

Message from the Supervisor Last month, I outlined a number of quality of life issues that we’ll be focusing on in town government this year. These include responding carefully to renewed pressure for residential growth, investing in civic improvements and taking on more traffic planning and pedestrian safety issues. These are things people in this community care about, and we’re going to h d to see what improvements we can make. workk very hard At the same time, we can’t lose our focus on providing quality services every day, and making investments where needed to continue providing those services within a reasonable cost. Two very basic services are Highway and Water. People definitely need to be able to drive from place to place, and get water when they turn on the tap. Our Highway Department, under our new Highway Superintendent Brent Meredith, provides snow and ice removal, road repair, leaf and brush pickup as well as many other services. On his first day on the job, Brent and the highway staff had a snowstorm to deal with, and there have been many since, including the Valentine’s Day storm that dropped more than 20 inches of snow. Well, the roads were cleared, as were the 43 miles of sidewalks in town (some of these took a little longer than usual, as it was a lot of snow). But despite being new on the job, and responding to some pretty difficult weather conditions, Brent and his staff have been busy thinking about better ways to provide service. They found a way to reopen the Town’s Compost Facility for five days (Tuesday – Saturday) for shoveling compost and dropping off yard waste (those needing a loader will still need to come on Tuesday, Thursday or Saturday). He saw a problem and found a way to fix it without requiring more tax money, and that’s what good management is all about. Whether you use the compost facility or not, we need to have a way to dispose of the leaves and yard waste we collect, and it’s good to know your town keeps looking for ways to maintain or improve service. Water and sewer are also very necessary services. The town DPW workers who staff our water treatment facilities and maintain the water and sewer systems are always there when needed. Like the Highway workers, they don’t get to choose when it snows or when the pipes burst. You’ll see them on the job regardless of the time of day or day of the week. While we don’t think of them on a daily basis, except perhaps when something goes wrong, our community could not exist as it is without their work. As the saying goes, you don’t miss your water until the well runs dry. That’s why the Town has been planning for and discussing our water supply for a great many years. This has included the work of our DPW department, several comprehensive engineering studies, and has been under focus by every Town Board since the mid 2000’s. In 2010, following intense study, debate and public discussion, the 26
Town Board made the decision to invest in our Clapper Road water treatment plant. Along with other supply sources, it was and remains a necessary facility to meet our water needs today, and is by far the most cost effective and reliable supply for the foreseeable future. It will require investment, as does our sewer system and other public infrastructure. This brings me to the very good news that the Town of Bethlehem’s bond rating has just been upgraded. While a bond rating is far less tangible than water or roads, it is very important. To get an upgrade says very good things about our town, and we now have the highest rating of any Albany County municipality. A higher rating also reduces the cost of debt, and debt is essential when making long term investments in water and sewer infrastructure. In their ratings upgrade report, S&P said that they viewed the “town’s management conditions as strong, with good financial practices,” noting that in 2012 Bethlehem adopted a fund balance policy and multiyear forecasts for operations and capital needs. Good town services require the constant efforts of town workers, as well as careful and expert planning. These are responsibilities everyone in town government takes very seriously, whether in our daily work or in long-term decision making to ensure that Bethlehem continues to thrive. The daily (and nightly) efforts of our dedicated workforce, and the recognition of our planning work in a bond rating upgrade are signs that we are on the right track.

BAILEY’S GARAGE
CAR CARE TIPS It’s All in the Timing With automotive engines as with many aspects of daily life, timing is critical. One vehicle component often overlooked during routine maintenance is the engine timing belt. If it fails, the engine will stop and the car will coast to a stop. The lucky motorist will only have the inconvenience of being stranded on the side of the road until the car can be towed to a repair facility to have the timing belt replaced. On the other hand, the engine might suffer severe, if not catastrophic, damage to its internal components. This potential disaster can be avoided easily and relatively inexpensively by replacing the timing belt within the required replacement interval. Timing belts resemble an engine accessory serpentine belt in appearance, only they typically have square teeth on the inside surface. They usually are constructed of rubber reinforced with nylon. The timing belt transfers the rotation of the crankshaft to the camshaft. The rotating camshaft activates the valves, which provide air and fuel to the cylinders and expel combustion gases to the exhaust system. The valves and pistons are constantly moving up and down at very high speeds. When the pistons are down, the valves are open; when the piston is at the top of its travel, the valves are closed. Some engines don’t allow clearance between a valve at its lowest point and a piston at its highest. The timing belt, therefore, is the critical link to ensure that these components don’t collide. If collision occurs, damage to the valves, pistons, cylinder head and cylinder walls can result. This can be an expensive repair. Timing belts usually are protected from foreign objects by a cover, making visual inspection impossible. Many domestic vehicles built within the last several years and the majority of imports are equipped with a timing belt. Other engines rely on a timing chain rather than a belt. Refer to your owner’s manual or take your car to a repair facility if you are unsure. The owner’s manual maintenance schedule is a source of timing belt replacement intervals, typically every 60,000 to 90,000 miles. Timing belt replacement usually requires removal of the engine drive belt that operates the alternator, water pump, power steering pump and air conditioner. Consider replacing this belt, or multiple belts, when having a new timing belt installed.

Diabetes Prevention Program YMCA Summer of Fun If you use your imagination, summer is just around the corner and it’s time to make plans for your kids to have a fun, active summer at the Bethlehem Y’s summer camp. Summer camp runs from June 30 to August 29 and is open from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. The Y’s Travel Camp features many exciting field trips to the best state parks, water parks, and other fun destinations. Travel camp runs for two weeks: July 14-18 and August 11-15. The Y also has a half-day pre-school Camp that runs from 9-12 for 3-5 year olds. There is a 3-day or 5-day option for this camp. Register for camp now at cdymca.org or at the Y’s front desk.
The Sound of Music at the Y The Y is alive with the sound of music! The Bethlehem YMCA will soon be expanding its opportunities for young children to develop skills in the performing arts. For the future Alicia Keys or Justin Timberlake, there will be a beginner’s singing class. The class will teach a complete understanding of all basic singing techniques. There are separate classes for kids ages 5 to 10, and for adults. Maybe your child is the next piano prodigy or guitar virtuoso. Develop that talent through the Y’s parent/child music program. This is a fabulous opportunity for you and your child, ages 3 to 5, to bond via interactive musical play.
Almost one in 10 Americans has diabetes, including one in four seniors. Exercise is also a key component of proper diabetes care. Losing a modest amount of weight and increasing physical activity could help you prevent or delay Type 2 diabetes. Let the Y help you reach healthy living goals for a healthier future. If you have diabetes, or are at risk, check out the Bethlehem YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program beginning March 31 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.
Saturday Night Live Every parent could use a little break for a night out. Every other Saturday night, your child can enjoy a fun-packed evening of games, gym time and movies at the Y while you enjoy an evening out. The program runs from 6:30 to 9:30 pm for kids ages 4 to 12 and costs only $13 for the first child and $7 for each additional child. Sign up at the Y front desk.

REAL ESTATE EXPERTS REVEALS HOW TO GUARANTEE HOME SELLS Bethlehem NY- Your biggest dilemma when buying another home is deciding whether to buy first or sell first. Either way is risky because you could wind up owning two homes or none at all. Well, our guaranteed sale program solves this. You see, before you even list with us, we prepare a total market analysis of your home, including a computerized printout of all comparable home sales, absorption rates, and current listings in the area. Using this information, together with you we determine a market value for your home. You then receive our upfront guarantee in writing before we even begin to market your home. This is better than RISK FREE because it gives you the security of knowing that your home is guaranteed to sell. This is a really important guarantee for you as a home seller, because you win no matter what happens. Let me explain: We will aggressively market your home for 120 days. In the unlikely event that your home does not sell within the 120 day period, we will buy your home ourselves for the upfront guaranteed sale price that we set together. You’re doubly protected, because if during this 120 day timeframe you receive an offer from an outside buyer that is over the guaranteed price, you get the higher offer, not us. You see, we’re taking all the risk so you don’t have to. With our program you know your home will sell, and that you will always get the highest offer (whether it’s our agreed guaranteed sale price, or a higher offer from an outside buyer). When you access our guaranteed sale program, you can look forward to finding your next home with much greater peace of mind. Now when you see a home you like, you can immediately place a firm cash offer because you’ll know how much money your home will sell for. The best part about our guaranteed sale program is that it eliminates the usual stress and worry that most home sellers experience. No emotional roller coaster ride about getting stuck with owning two homes or no home at all. Our guaranteed home sale program makes house-hunting fun. To find out about how
our program can benefit you, please leave your address after the tone to receive your FREE industry report entitled, “How to Avoid Getting Stuck with Two Homes”. If you are planning to put your home on the market within the next six months or less, you’ll need to organize yourself quickly. Simply call us at 1-800-448-7016 Ext 1001 So if you plan to make your move within six months or less, please ask for Report #1. If you think it will be longer than six months before you list your home, the choices that you face are a little broader. So if you plan to list your home in longer than six months, please ask for Report #2. Again, to receive your free report, please leave us your mailing address, email address, and the specific address of the property you are interested in selling. As always if you want to get an idea of the value of your home instantly, simply visit us at www.Albanynyhomevalues.com and enter your property address for a free instant property evaluation. TRASH TALK
Delmar
Ideas for making the process easier:
Just got off the phone with Punxsutawney Phyllis, the somewhat lesser known but equally precise with prognosticating Pennsylvanian groundhog. Good news and bad news. The bad news is that she woke up today and just sees shadows everywhere, which apparently means 6 more months of winter. Sorry, but maybe now would be a good time to go grab a pallet of ice melt at Home Depot. Got to get that girl some rose colored corrective lenses! Good news? Well, I did just save a bunch of money on car insurance, but even better, this means YOU now have plenty of time to start getting ready for SPRING CLEAN UP before the sun comes back! What a relief, instead of being stuck outside getting actual fresh air, you can instead breathe your own fresh air into some long neglected but necessary projects. Like I always say, “air on the side of caution”. Ok, I just made that up, but I will be saying it daily moving forward.
1. Separate unwanted items into 4 groups: household garbage, useful items to donate like clothing, recyclables (scrap metal, electronics, glass, plastic, paper) and junk (broken stuff, old furniture, wood, etc.). 2. Start with one room like the kitchen which will go fast and provide instant satisfaction. 3. Make easy decisions-If you’re not using something, get rid of it. Don’t plan for years down the road when you “might” need it-trust me, when you finally get around to using (fill in the blank) it will be inevitable it was broken the whole time or you are missing half the pieces. 4. Let go of sentimentality. I am not going to throw away my wedding album even though I have only looked at it once in 12 years, but maybe the Smithsonian would be interested in your National Geographic collection. Probably not. Ditto the toys in the garage only the squirrels play with, since your kids are in college now. Goodbye!
We can help. Scrapster is family owned local business which provides a NO COST scrap metal and appliance pick up and removal service. We also offer LOW COST junk removal and clean outs. FINANCIAL FOCU$ Financial “Spring Cleaning” Can Brighten Your Investment Picture
The days are getting longer and warmer — a sure indication of the arrival of spring. Another sign of the season may be the urge you get to do some spring cleaning. But you might not have realized that some of the same spring-cleaning techniques that can be used on your home can also apply to your investments and your overall financial strategy. Here are a few ideas to consider: •Get rid of “clutter.” As you do your spring cleaning, you may well find some clutter — a bunch of items you no longer need. As an investor, you might look at your portfolio and also find “clutter” in the form of investments that are no longer appropriate for your objectives. For example, perhaps some of them are virtual duplicates of other investments you own, thereby diminishing your potential for diversification. Or maybe some investments are now too risky for your needs. In any case, you may be better off rebalancing your portfolio. •Get organized. As you clean your home, you might find ways to organize your belongings and furniture more efficiently. And you may also be able to organize your investments more effectively. One possibility: Consider consolidating your investment accounts with one provider. If you have an IRA here, another one there and some other investments scattered about, you may be paying more in fees and commissions than is necessary. By consolidating these investments, you might save money and paperwork — and more importantly, you may find it easier, with all your investments under one “roof,” to follow a single, unified investment strategy.
with Jerry Pittz
• Seal “cracks.” Over time, the grout between your kitchen or bathroom tiles can crack, so you’ll need to re-grout to protect your flooring. And you may find that, in looking at your overall financial strategy, your “protection” component — primarily in the form of insurance — might have developed some “cracks” or “chips.” Specifically, has your life insurance kept up with changes in your family situation? Events such as marriage, remarriage or the arrival of a new child can all trigger the need to review your life insurance. And you’ll also want to make sure you have adequate disability insurance. Consult with a financial professional for information on appropriate protection vehicles. •Do some “dusting.” As part of your spring cleaning, you may need to dust furniture, shelves and other surfaces in your home. And if you’ve been investing for a long time, you may need to metaphorically “dust off” your financial strategy to “freshen it up” to reflect changes in your life. To cite one possibility, as you get close to retirement, you may need to shift some — but certainly not all — of your growth-oriented investments into income-producing ones. But you may also need to review and revise your financial strategy at other points in your life, such as when you begin saving for your children’s college education. Just as spring cleaning can bring more light into your home, sprucing up your investment picture can help you brighten your financial outlook. And these improvements can help you in all the seasons of your life. This article was written by Edward Jones for use by your local Edward Jones Financial Advisor. ASK THE Paul B. Pagnotta, Pharmacist and Co-Owner, Four Corners Pharmacy
March is National Kidney Month
More than 20 million Americans may have kidney disease and many more are at risk.
Do you know the basics about Kidney Disease?
What makes the kidney so important to our body?
Your kidneys filter extra water and wastes out of your blood and make urine. It also removes some medications from the body. Your kidneys also help control blood pressure so that your body can stay healthy. Kidney disease means that the kidneys are damaged and can’t filter blood like they should. This damage can cause wastes to build up in the body. It can also cause other problems that can harm your health.
How does damage to the kidneys happen? For most people, kidney damage occurs slowly over many years, often due to diabetes or high blood pressure. This is called chronic kidney disease. When someone has a sudden change in kidney function— because of illness, or injury, or have taken certain medications—this is called acute kidney injury. This can occur in a person with normal kidneys or in someone who already has kidney problems.
Who is at risk for kidney disease? Anyone can develop kidney disease, regardless of age or race. The main risk factors for developing kidney disease are: • Diabetes, • High blood pressure, • Cardiovascular (heart and blood vessel) disease, • A family history of kidney failure.
Diabetes and high blood pressure are the most common causes of kidney disease.
These conditions can slowly damage the kidneys over many years. That is why controlling your blood pressure and blood sugar are so important.
What are the signs and symptoms of kidney disease?
Early kidney disease has no signs or symptoms. You may not feel any different until your kidney disease is very advanced. Blood and urine tests are the only way to know if you have kidney disease. A blood test checks your glomerular filtration rate (GFR), which tells how well your kidneys are filtering. Kidney disease can be treated if detected early. Ask your doctor if you should be screened for kidney disease. 40
How is kidney disease treated?
The sooner you know you have kidney disease, the sooner you can get treatment to help delay or prevent kidney failure. Treatment may include taking medicines called ACE inhibitors or ARBs to manage high blood pressure and keep your kidneys healthier longer. Treating kidney disease may also help prevent heart disease. Kidney disease usually does not go away. Instead, it may get worse over time and can lead to kidney failure. If the kidneys fail, treatment with dialysis or a kidney transplant is necessary. Kidney disease can also lead to other health conditions including heart disease. In fact, people with kidney disease are more likely to have a stroke or heart attack. If you have kidney disease or at risk for kidney disease (high blood pressure, diabetes), what does your pharmacist and provider need to know about your medicine and supplement use? If your kidneys do not filter as well as they did in the past you may have an unsafe buildup of medicines in your blood. Some medicines also can harm your kidneys. Your pharmacist and healthcare provider need to know what medicines you take so they can give you advice on how to protect your kidneys. These medicines include prescription and over-the-counter (OTC) medicines (those you get without prescriptions) in addition to supplements, such as vitamins and herbal or natural remedies. If you take OTC medicines for headaches, pain, fever, or colds, you may be taking non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). NSAIDs are OTC medicines that can be harmful to your kidneys and blood pressure control. Common NSAIDs include ibuprofen and naproxen. Ask your pharmacist or provider if the OTC medicines you take are safe to use, especially if you have high blood pressure or diabetes. Combining NSAIDs with other medications used to manage high blood pressure puts your kidneys at more risk for damage.
What you can do?
• The next time you pick up a prescription or buy an OTC medicine or supplement, ask your pharmacist how the product may affect your kidneys or interact with other medicines you are taking. • Get your prescriptions filled at one pharmacy so your pharmacist can keep track of your medicines and check for harmful interactions. • Keep a list of your medicines and supplements to review with your doctor and pharmacist. • Some pharmacies, like Four Corners Pharmacy, offer a medication review service which reviews your all your medications including prescription, nonprescription, vitamins and supplements to ensure there are no interactions. Some insurance plans cover this medication review service.
Remember that you can always talk with your pharmacist or provider about your medicines http://www.nkdep.nih.gov

Trish Pix Tattered Pages Used Books
Greetings Fellow Reader, March is a unique month! It is said that “March comes in like a lamb & goes out like a lion” or “March comes in like a lion & goes out like a lamb”. It is the month in which Spring officially arrives! Crocus poke thru the frost, forsythia bring a pop of color and hope, though often under a cover of snow. March is a transitional month before the April rain and a change in our landscape. However, a flock of a hundred robins descended in my neighborhood on Feb. 15th! I see daily posts from friends & family expressing a longing for sunshine, flip-flops and the day when we can come out from under our afghans, scarves, woolen hats & hoodies! March leads to April which often brings back my “snowbird patrons” who left with an arm load of books for places warmer! I miss them & our wonderful conversations about books and life! I also miss their sales here in the shop! January & February are always tough months for small, local businesses. The aftermath of the Holidays impacts us as credit card bills come in, snow mounts and the polar vortex keeps us inside more. Here, in Glenmont Center Square, we lost another locally owned small business in January. After 27 years, Bethlehem Physical Therapy closed its doors. I miss my friends as well as the business that they generated for the shop. I still see some of those patrons, for they love the bargains and selection that Tattered Pages provides; such as: a table of Romance novels for $1…a bargain rack for $3.99 and a shelf of $0.75 books which are bit more tattered…but totally readable. Owning the bookshop allows me to meet new people each day, have conversations regarding books, the community and life in general. Yesterday I had a conversation with Chris, a young college student & writer, who shared his love of the “print” book over the e-reader. He enjoys the tactile experience of holding a real book. We discussed some of his favorite minimalist writers such as Amy Hempel (In the Cemetery Where Al Jolson is Buried) whose short stories often involve the human/pet relationship, Tobias Wolff (short stories, memoirs), Raymond Carver (short stories), and Chuck Palahniuk (Fight Club, Choke, several essays). We discussed the power of writing, the imagery of adjective filled description versus the impact of minimalist essays, short stories & poetry. It was exhilarating to discuss the love of well written fiction. I shared my personal love of scifi/fantasy/horror/mystery and those authors whom I enjoy. I should get a “kick-back” from Stephen King, his son “Joe Hill”, & Dean Koontz who write in the “horror/suspense/supernatural genre for all the mention I give them! I just finished reading a SK that was published in 2006, “The Cell.” I have a fixation with “The Walking Dead” and apocalyptic/dystopian fiction lately and the core of the story of “The Cell” is that. In an instant, a pulse thru all operating cellphones turns the phone users into zombies. The tale continues with the non-cellphone users finding each other and trying to reach their loved ones. Survival of humanity, plain but never simple, King’s writing stimulates my own imagination and as I appreciate his very carefully chosen words. (Also, I still 44
don’t own a personal cellphone!) King has said “The path to hell is paved with adverbs.” “Description begins in the writer’s imagination, but should finish in the reader’s.” “Any word you have to hunt for in a thesaurus is the wrong word. There are no exceptions to this rule.” “Books are the perfect entertainment: no commercials, no batteries, hours of enjoyment for each dollar spent. What I wonder is why everybody doesn’t carry a book around for those inevitable dead spots in life.” Perhaps I read him so much because he appeals to the untapped writer that lives deep in my own soul. Also, he deeply affects the “teacher” in me through his many interviews, essays, and books on the writing process. He encourages others to write…and one cannot be a successful reader without building that foundation thru reading. I am afraid that texting has abbreviated our use of words & time dedicated to reading those words. Writing is an art that helps to release what is held in our soul. Reading helps to tap into that inner soul and can make for excellent personal reflection and discussion. I recently found my good friend Ginny a copy of “The Bitter Woods: a story of the Battle of the Bulge” so that she could revisit this story that was such an integral part of her father’s life as he fought there in WWII. She wanted to share this personal part of her father’s life with nieces, nephews and her own son, through a book. I also feel that books fill in those blank spots in our life. Another friend, Carol, reads 5 books a week, mostly mystery, to fill in those long winter nights when she can’t sleep. Books help us to forget our troubles or learn a new skill or just whisk us away. OUR MARCH SPECIAL: an additional 15% off on all books in our “Adventure/Intrigue” section of the store! Authors such as Baldacci, Berry, Brown, Clancy, Cussler, Follett, Ludlum etc will have be 15% off their lowest ticketed price! Thousands to choose from! SHOW ME THIS ARTICLE FROM
OUR TOWNE FOR A FREE GIFT!!!
If you “opt in” to our new Sentext program…text pages to 57711 you will receive monthly text specials just for you in the shop! Students, Parents…remember college texts and reading requirement books can be ordered at reduced prices for school needs…just contact Trish! In closing, I would hope that you would tell others about my shop. Just 10 new customers this month could help me beat the winter blahs and support a locally owned business! Until next month…Good Health and Happy Reading!

St. Patrick's Day Toasts Health and long life to you Land without rent to you The partner of your heart to you And when you die, may your bones rest in Ireland As you slide down the banisters of life may the splinters never point the wrong way. May your blessings outnumber The shamrocks that grow, And may trouble avoid you Wherever you go. Here's to your coffin.... May it be built of 100 year old oaks which I will plant tomorrow May your neighbor respect you, Troubles neglect you, The angels protect you, And Heaven accept you. May the best day of your past be the worst day of your future. May you live to be a hundred, with one extra year to repent. May you never forget what is worth remembering, Or remember what is best forgotten. May you have the hindsight to know where you've been, The insight to know where you are, and the foresight to known when you've gone too far. May God bring good health to your enemies enemies
