Q: Spring break is around the corner and we have a family trip planned. What can we do so our pets have a safe vacation too?

A: Vacation is just around the corner, but before your family departs, consider a few things to prepare your pets for your trip. Whether you are planning on traveling with your pets or having them kenneled, plan ahead to make sure your pet will be taken care of during your trip. There are many options available for your pet: traveling with the family, staying with a friend, boarding at a kennel or cattery, or hiring the services of a pet-sitter. Here are a few things to take into account for each option: Taking your pet with you: • If you can’t bear to leave your dog or cat behind, check for pet friendly hotels. Be realistic about the amount of time you will be able to spend with your pet. If you are away from your pet over 50% of the day, it may be best to leave your pet at home.

• If you will be taking flight for your travel plans, carefully consider how the trip will affect your pet.

Air travel can be very stressful for pets.

• Check with your vet to make sure that there are no special animal health requirements for traveling to your destination.

Staying with a friend: • To have piece of mind, arrange for your pet to stay with a friend during your vacation and then swap services during their trip.

• Make sure your pets have a positive interaction before you leave, especially if your friend has pets.

Bring your pet over to your friend’s home multiple times to get them used to the environment. Make sure to leave complete instructions for friends to keep your pet “on schedule.”

Boarding at a Kennel or Cattery: • If you are unable to travel with your pet or make arrangements with a friend, a boarding facility may be an alternative. Choose a facility that requires immunizations so that your pet doesn’t get sick from any of the other residents and ask for a tour to ensure the cleanliness of the facility.

• Inquire about the amount of time your pet will spend outdoors and the types of exercise areas.

Hiring the Services of a Pet-Sitter: • If your pet requires one-on-one interaction and has difficulty leaving home, hiring a pet-sitter may be your best choice. Check their references to guarantee they are reliable and trustworthy.

• Leave clear instructions and all of your pet’s supplies in an easily accessible location.

• Do a trial run for a day to identify any potential problems prior to leaving.

Important items to leave with your pet’s caretaker: • A letter of authorization for the caretaker and the most recent vet record so that they can seek veterinary treatment if your pet becomes ill.

• The phone numbers and locations of your veterinarian and a nearby emergency clinic.

• Your personal contact information or hotel and flight information in the event of an emergency.

Although it may seem time-consuming to make these arrangements prior to your vacation, knowing your pet is safe and properly taken care of will give you peace of mind during your escape.

Expanding Girls’ Horizons in Science and Engineering March is Expanding Girls’ Horizons in Science and Engineering Month! This is the 21st century, so why are we still talking about women in science? While women have made huge advancements in biological and medical fields, even making up the majority in some of these fields (especially veterinary medicine), women are still a significant minority in engineering, computer, physical sciences, and mathematics.

The development of talent in STEM (Science Technology Engineering Mathematics) fields is crucial for our country’s global leadership. When an open and diverse scientific community is fostered, you can draw from a variety of unique viewpoints or experiences.

So why is it important for women to be encouraged to pursue careers in STEM fields?

Attracting and retaining more women in the (STEM) workforce will maximize innovation, creativity, and competitiveness. Scientists are working to solve some of the most difficult challenges of our time. Engineers design many of the things we use daily. Innovation is most useful for a population when the innovators represent the population for whom they innovate. With a more diverse workforce, scientific and technological products, services, and solutions are likely to be better designed and more likely to represent all users, and the direction of scientific inquiry will be guided by a broader array of experiences.

As Google says, technical innovation requires diversity. A diverse workforce leads to better products for diverse users. When women are not involved in the design of products, needs and desires unique to women may be overlooked.

For example, some early voice-recognition systems were calibrated to typical male voices.

As a result, women’s voices were literally unheard. Diversity ensures better products for the entire population.

How do we get girls interested in STEM? Spread the word about girls’ and women’s achievements in math and science. Find local mentors to help girls reach their career goals.

Teach girls that intellectual skills, including spatial skills, are acquired, not innate.

Teach kids about stereotype threat (the risk of confirming negative stereotypes about an individual’s racial, ethnic, gender, or cultural group) and promote a growth-mindset environment.

Help girls recognize their career-relevant skills and emphasize real-life applications in early STEM courses.

Encourage high school girls to take calculus, physics, chemistry, computer science, and engineering classes when available.

Give inclusive messages about who makes a good science or engineering student.

Take proactive steps to support women in STEM majors.

FINANCIAL FOCU$ Women Must Act to Overcome Financial Challenges International Women’s Day, observed on March 8, celebrates the social, cultural and political achievements of women. Yet, women continue to face many challenges. For one thing, women still encounter gender-specific obstacles to their important financial goals, such as a comfortable retirement. If you’re a woman, what can you do to get past these barriers?

First of all, you need to recognize them. Here are a few to consider: Longer life spans – A 65-year-old woman is expected to live, on average, another 20.5 years, compared to 17.9 years for a 65-year-old man, according to the National Center for Health Statistics. That’s another 2½ years of life – and 2½ years more of expenses.

Lower incomes – Women working full time in the United States typically are paid 80% of what men earn, according to Census Bureau data.

More time away from the workforce – Men work an average of 38 years, compared to just 29 for women, according to the Pew Research Center and the Social Security Administration. The gap is largely due to women taking time off to care for young children and elderly parents. Women who work substantially fewer years than men will miss out on hundreds of thousands of dollars in earnings and many years of contributions to 401(k)s or other retirement plans.

These statistics certainly are sobering – but they don’t mean you are powerless to improve your financial security. In fact, you can do quite a lot, including the following: Boost your retirement plan contributions – Put in as much as you can afford to your 401(k) or other employersponsored plan, and increase your contributions whenever you get a raise. And even if you have a 401(k), you may still be eligible to contribute to an IRA. Invest for growth – Some studies have shown that women may invest less aggressively than men. If you invest mostly in conservative vehicles, you may run the risk of falling short of your financial goals. To achieve these goals, you’ll need a reasonable amount of growth potential in your portfolio.

Extend your working life – If you like your job, you may want to consider sticking with it a couple of years past when you initially thought you’d retire. You’ll be able to add to your retirement accounts, and the extra years of work may help you increase your Social Security benefits.

These payments are based on an average of your highest 35 years of earnings, so if you have a zero in some of these years, it will pull the average down. Consequently, your extra years of work may help erase those zeros.

But even if you have a long, unbroken work record, your extended career can help you in regard to Social Security, because the extra money may mean you can afford to delay collecting benefits – and the longer you wait past 62, the bigger your checks will be – at least until you turn 70, when they “max out.”

You’ll help yourself by becoming familiar with the special issues women face in meeting their long-term goals. As you know, women have met challenges successfully for a long time. After all, Ginger Rogers did everything Fred Astaire did – except backwards, and in heels.

The Kleinke Family and Glensmere Guernsey Farm

Guernsey cows and fresh produce figure prominently in the story of the Kleinke family farm on Kenwood Avenue.

William Kleinke and Helena Krause immigrated separately from Germany in 1880. They met in the States, married in 1882 and began raising a family in Albany’s South End, then full of German immigrants.

William was a successful butcher who owned his home and shop.

In 1915, the Kleinke’s purchased Pine Grove, a former Hotaling family farm which was located on the north side of today’s Kenwood Avenue. A 1916 farm directory notes that William H. and Helena Kleinke owned Pine Grove in Glenmont and their main crop was hay. Soon thereafter, their son Edward, then just 18 years old, traded a horse for two Guernsey cows. Thus began the operation that would become the Glensmere Guernsey Farm.

Glensmere (so named because the farm is on the border of Glenmont and Elsmere) grew to about 100 head with 60 cows being milked. Kleinke’s advertised “There is no substitute for Guernsey Milk. Buy it at the farm or have it delivered at your door.” The dairy had routes in Bethlehem and Albany, and deliveries could include eggs, milk and cream. The dairy had a good, long run, 50+ years, finally closing shop in 1973.

Edward Kleinke was a tireless promoter of Guernsey cows. In 1927 he helped organize the Capital District Guernsey Breeders Association where he was the first president. His cows won awards at the Altamont Fair and his bulls were sought after sires. One, Glensmere’s

King Bee, sired eight champion cows, one of which, in 1951, set a record with the American Guernsey Cattle Club for producing 7,873 pounds of milk and 442 pounds of butterfat. According to the newspaper clipping, “Nice was a junior 2-year-old and was milked twice daily during her record, 610 times.”

On the personal side, Edward married Ida Burkhardt in 1922. They met at a square dance in Clarksville. The couple raised six children on the farm: Helen, Edward Jr., Dorothy, Ethel, and twins Peter and Paul. Edward was also a violinist playing with the Delmar Community

property that Paul had purchased from his father ten years earlier. The original farmhouse there had burned down, but the old Dutch style barn remained as did a machine shop. Paul and Ann transformed the machine shop into a warm and inviting home. This property is the Kleinke farm stand on Kenwood Avenue we are all familiar with today. Ann and Paul are proud to note that their five grandchildren have the opportunity to be the fifth generation of Kleinkes farming in Bethlehem.

Born in 1939, Paul Kleinke has many memories of growing up on the Glensmere farm. This was an era when Delmar and Elsmere were still relatively rural.

One highlight is the time he and his brother Peter rode their Palomino horses to Tastee Freeze on Delaware Avenue for a refreshing ice cream. Besides working in the dairy operation, Paul raised vegetables and sold them to dairy farm customers, first from the back of his truck and gradually expanding to a large farm stand.

Paul graduated from Bethlehem Central in 1958. He met his bride, Ann Wasson, roller skating at Hoffman’s rink and they married in 1959. While continuing to raise and sell farm fresh produce, Paul and Ann were, and continue to be, active in community life. Paul volunteered with the Elsmere Fire Department for many years including service as chief from 1975 to 1983. Ann was active with the Ladies Auxiliary. Both worked a combined total of 51 years with Bethlehem Central schools, he as a bus driver and she in a clerical position at the high school.

Bethlehem YMCA Summer Camp Cures Summertime Blues

The 2016 Bethlehem YMCA Giving Tree turned into In the 1960’s, singer Eddie Cochran, and later rocker Roger Daltrey of the Who, sang “there ain’t no cure for the summertime blues.” For kids in the Bethlehem area, Cochran and Daltrey are wrong. The cure is summer camp at the Bethlehem YMCA and registration is open now!

You can find out all the information and download a camp brochure by going to cdymca.org/bethlehemymca-summer-camp/. However, as long as you are reading this, let me tell you more about YMCA summer camp using a few lines from that classic song, and some real comments from parents of Y summer campers.

“I'm gonna raise a fuss, I'm gonna raise a holler.” – No fussing but lots of hollering for joy as the Bethlehem YMCA summer camp promises and delivers fun all day for our campers.

After summer camp last year, a parent told the Y: “I have a great granddaughter going to the Bethlehem Y and totally loving it. I think the program is well run and the kids have freedom to choose activities with gentle and caring supervision. The whole camp went to the Great Escape for the day and Emack and Bolios ice cream truck will be there after lunch. Swimming every day, making new friends, plenty of room to run, climb, play ball or do quiet activities, even just sit in the shade and read if you want!!”

“I'm gonna take two weeks, gonna have a fine vacation.” A parent told us: “My nephew attended six weeks of Summer Camp and this has been by far the best experience he has ever had. The counselors and program director were all so amazing.”

“About a-workin' all summer just to try to earn a dollar.” YMCA summer camp is a great value and can save you money. Our Summer Camp is in full swing from 9:00 am until 4:00 pm, Monday through Friday, with lots of fun things for your child to experience each day. In addition to a high-quality summer camp experience, we also offer before and after camp care at no additional charge.

In addition, with our sibling savings option, you save more for each additional child you send together to camp. For each additional child who attends camp, you save $10 a week. That’s a savings of $100 for each additional child who spends the summer at the Y. In addition, the Y offers financial assistance for those who need help to afford summer camp.

Greetings Fellow Reader, March is a unique month! Most are aware of the old Lion/Lamb adage. As I write this today, it is still February.

The sun is shining in a blue sky screaming day! Birds have started to build a nest outside over the door to the shop.

Their chirping is a wonderful serenade that Spring is on its way. The weather forecast is for a drop in temperature into the 30s over the weekend! The door is wide open and Seamus has wandered out onto the pavement a few times already. I am struggling with a wicked head cold that I am battling and has caused me to close the shop early a few days so that I can gain a little bit more sleep. I would love to cuddle up and read, but my eyes are saying not yet!!!

March is a transitional month before the April rain and a change in our landscape. However, flocks of geese have been flying overhead for the past weeks! I see daily posts from friends & family expressing a longing for sunshine, flip-flops and the day when we can come out from under our afghans, scarves, woolen hats & hoodies! March leads to April which often brings back my “snowbird patrons” who left with an arm load of books for places warmer!

I miss them & our wonderful conversations about books and life! I also miss their sales here in the shop!

The most recent jewelry sale in the shop in February brought in several new customers to purchase books. All February, Romance novels were an additional 15% off.

Since I last wrote, I finished and then re-sold, Joe Hill’s “The Fireman”, a pandemic/apocalypse novel unlike anything I have ever read. I also read “Station Eleven” by Emily St. John Mandel. It is the story of child actress, Kirsten, and the night a famous Hollywood actor dies of a heart attack at her feet. It is also the night that a devastating flu pandemic arrives into the city. In a matter of a few weeks civilization is changed forever. Twenty years later Kirsten travels the remaining settlements with a small troupe of actors and musicians. While dedicating to keep civilization educated & entertained, they are drawn into a personal mystery, a cult and the relationship between Kirsten and her older mentor that provides her an escape, a purpose, a guide to live in this ever dangerous world. I am currently reading “The Disappearance” by Philip Wylie
