When it comes to your car’s safety, brakes top the list of systems that need monitoring. However, many people are unaware of the signs that indicate a car’s brakes may need maintenance or repair.

For routine maintenance, it’s important to check the vehicle’s braking system at least once a year. Other tips: • Brake systems should be flushed and brake fluid replaced every two years. Brake fluid absorbs moisture in the system and becomes acidic after two years or 30,000 miles.

• Check your owner’s manual or ask your technician to see what kind of brakes your car has and how they are adjusted.

Any out of the ordinary sound is often a sign that brakes have worn to the point they should be checked. Watch especially for a grinding noise, and if your brakes typically throw off brake dust on your wheels, look for a sudden increase or decrease in dust. Another leading indicator is the feel of the brake pedal. If the car pulls left or right when braking, or if the front end shakes, those are both signs of excessive brake wear. If the brake pedal begins to feel spongy, it could be a sign that air has entered the brake system or fluid is low.

Q: There are a number of dogs in my neighborhood and I get concerned about my kids playing outside. What can I do to help

prevent dog bites?

A: Dog bites and attacks are a serious health problem. Dog bites requiring medical attention in the United States number 500,000 to 800,000 annually. Countless more bites go unreported and untreated. May 20-26 is National Dog Bite Prevention Week.

The vast majority of dog bites are from a dog known to the child—his or her own pet, a neighbor’s or friend’s.

You can help prevent this from happening to your child. Please discuss with him or her the appropriate way to behave around dogs. The following tips will help you and your child understand the difference between safe and potentially dangerous interactions with dogs.

1. Do not stare into a dog’s eyes.

2. Do not go near or tease dogs behind fences or chained in yards.

3. Do not touch a dog that is off-leash outside.

4. Teach your child if they see a loose dog to tell an adult immediately.

5. Do not run and scream if a loose dog comes near you.

6. Stand very still like a tree and be very quiet if a dog comes near you.

7. Do not touch or play with a dog while he or she is eating.

8. Do not touch a dog when he or she is sleeping.

9. Only pet a dog if you have received permission from the dog’s owner.

10. Ask permission of the dog by letting him sniff a closed hand.

11. If you fall or are knocked over by a dog, curl up into a ball with your hands over your head and neck.

Protect your face.

12. If a dog approaches to sniff you, stay still. In most cases, the dog will go away when it determines you are not a threat.

Remember, regardless of size or breed, any dog can bite if provoked. Responsible pet ownership is the key to reducing the likelihood of a dog bite. Dog owners must understand the importance of appropriate behavioral training and supervision of contact between their dog and children or strangers.

Health Matters Preparing Your Body for Exercise How many of us are too rushed, too impatient, to warm up our joints and muscles prior to exercise? Or think we don’t need to because we’ve never been injured? (Me! Once upon a time.)

Simple movement preparation can not only help prevent injuries, it can improve athletic performance. Releasing tightness in our fascia increases our joints’ range of motion, enabling our muscles to perform optimally.

Fascia is a structure of connective tissue whose function is much more extensive than space (or my expertise) allows me to describe, but think of it as a sheet of plastic wrap lying under our skin, pulled tightly from the top of our heads to the tips of our toes and also woven tightly throughout and surrounding your muscles. That white filmy layer you see underneath the skin of chicken breast (muscle) is fascia.

When we feel a “knot” or tightness in our muscles, it’s usually because the fascia has gotten “bunched up” (again, laymans’ terms). If you’re lucky, you have access to a great massage therapist who is trained in myo (muscle)-fascial release. Next best is to learn how to perform this on yourself, and the good news is it’s easy to do and only requires one or two inexpensive tools.

Foam rollers are dense, cylinder shaped tools that you place your body on (sit, lie, roll over) using it like a giant rolling pin. They’re great for massaging and releasing tightness in all the major muscle groups including backs, legs, shoulders, etc. Foam rollers can be purchased in retail stores and online. Perform Better www.performbetter.com offers a variety of shapes and degrees of density (softness-hardness) and comes with an instructional CD/DVD that’s very helpful.

To focus more direct pressure on a tight spot, try using soft balls, tennis balls, golf balls, lacrosse balls, even those large tennis-type balls sold in pet stores for dogs to play catch with. Roll a tennis ball under your foot, paying attention to your arches, heels and where your toes attach to your foot. If you need more pressure, try a golf ball. Larger balls are better for larger muscle groups, e.g., softballs or lacrosse balls for gluteal (butt) muscles and hamstrings (back of thighs).

Roll until you find a tight spot or “knot” , pause and increase the pressure until the spot relaxes. Don’t hurt yourself – you should not be bruised!

To relieve tightness between your shoulder blades (epidemic in our culture due to the amount of time we spend at computer/desks), place a tennis ball between your shoulder blades and lean against a wall, pressing your back into the ball and roll it around to massage “knots” or tight areas. To anyone who happens to walk in on you doing this, you’ll look like a bear scratching himself against a tree.

Follow this by performing some simple joint mobility moves prior to exercise. These moves are non-impact, and use only your bodyweight.

Examples are one- and two-legged bridges, hip circles, leg swings, bear crawls, shoulder and T-spine activation moves.

All of the above should take you no longer than 10 minutes. Finish with dynamic stretches and a little more foam rolling and I guarantee you’ll be amazed at how much better you feel both during and post-exercise!

Neighbors Next Door Meghan McFerran Dancer & Choreographer

It’s the story of a little girl, dreaming of being a dancer. She wears tutus all the time and dances her way through family videos. Of course, dance class is part of this story and the three-year-old loves to twirl on the stage with the other tutu-ed girls. Delmar’s Meghan McFerran was that little girl, joyfully wearing her Tinker Bell costume for weeks on end and dancing all the time. Now at seventeen, she’s an accomplished young woman with an intense passion for dance. She also loves to choreograph and teach.

Meghan has been dancing at Tina Marie’s dance studio in Guilderland since the age of three. She started out as any other toddler, happy to be dancing in her costumes. Early on, it became clear that Meghan would stand out. By seventeen, many dancers have fallen into a particular style. Meghan, however, loves all methods of dance: ballet, hip hop, jazz, tap, lyrical and modern. Also for her, the many competitions she participates in aren’t all about winning. Meghan goes to the events and when she’s not onstage, she’s sitting in the audience observing and learning.

“I love to watch the other dancers. I sit and take notes on the moves and music. Styles and dances change so much. I want to see what the other studios are doing.

It’s also important to see what the judges like,” she says with a huge smile.

The information she gathers strengthens her skills as a teacher and choreographer. A big piece of what Meghan does at Tina Marie’s is working with younger students which requires choreography, something that is never far from her mind. She finds great joy in it, as much as in her dance. She’s practically grown up in the dance studio. Her teachers have guided her over the years from a happy little girl to confident, strong dancer. She was asked to become one of them, and be not only student and dancer but also teacher and choreographer. Meghan teaches the younger students on Saturday, enjoying it so much that when her paycheck arrives, she is pleasantly surprised.

It’s easy for her to forget that she’s working. Her

boundless energy and enthusiasm for the art bubbles over when she speaks of it.

“When they offered me the teaching position, there wasn’t any doubt. When it comes to dancing, I want more. I’ve always wanted more. I love a challenge and I say bring it on!”

There are long hours spent at the studio, four days during the week and every Saturday. Her routine is rigorous and disciplined. There is gymnastics first, done to keep limber and strong. After gymnastics is a solo dance lesson, then a break. She carves out time for homework. Then it’s ballet for an hour and more dance until 8:30. At home, she eats dinner, hits the shower and does more homework. It’s a busy day.

All of her dedication and hard work have pay off.

Although winning National trophies and medals is not Meghan’s goal nor her motivation, she has plenty of them. There have been many competitions over the years, routines done with a group or solo. She’s brought home countless trophies, medals and awards for her creative and graceful style. Now, she’s aiming for the other side of dance: the role of choreographer.

This year, Tina Marie’s studio trusted her with choreographing a dance for one of the competitions. It was for a group of three girls, a tap trio. Meghan chose Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy and created a very challenging routine. She instilled in the girls what had been taught to her by telling them, “It’s not about winning or beating the other dancers. It’s about being precise and getting the exact technique down.” For this work, Meghan brought home the Young Choreographers Award from their most recent dance competition - a prestigious and important validation for a talented young dancer.

“The dance was really challenging for the girls. They worked so hard at it,” she says, with genuine pride, “But they nailed it and I was so happy for them.”

Last summer, Meghan’s talent and reputation earned her an invite to study in New York City with several of the choreographers from the popular television show, So You Think You Can Dance. In addition, Meghan works tirelessly with her dance troupe to raise funds for children’s causes, in her words “an opportunity for talent to give back and help those in need.”

At the end of the day, when the dancing is done, there is school work. Meghan is an honor-roll student at Bethlehem High School. Her intense dance schedule is balanced with a serious course load, with honors and AP classes. She is Secretary of the Student Senate and a tutor in math and Spanish. There is also the violin, which she plays in the school orchestra.

Expertly balancing her school work with dance, she excels at both. Meghan was recently chosen to spend two days at the 2012 Students Inside Albany Conference. One of only twenty-five students chosen from across New York state, she won the honor by writing a winning essay. For two days, she shadowed and Senator Neil Breslin and Assemblyman Steven McLaughlin. She gleaned much from her experience.

“I learned so much and came back with all these ideas about how we can be better organized in our student senate and great ways to raise funds. I love writing and journalism and math and chemistry, and now I’m really loving politics too.”

When Meghan talks of the future, dance plays a big part in her vision. The best dance schools are in the big cities, and that’s where she wants to be.

“I’ll find something that’s not too far from home.” This she says with a loyal glance and smile at her mother.

“It will be a school that has a ton of energy and is known for its dancing.”

Before she goes off to college, there is so much to do; a whole year and a half of dancing. This July, she’s heading off to Disney World with her dance school, to perform onstage in Downtown Disney. For this they will have prepared for nearly a year, working on dances, honing, perfecting and doing it over and over again. She’ll be dancing on the stage, but also showcasing her talent for choreography by working with and preparing a few of the other acts. This event is not a competition. Just a chance to shine.

And shining onstage is something that Meghan McFerran does best.

Irises and Perennials on May 20th One Sunday morning every spring, the Capital Hudson Iris Society has a big plant sale in the parking lot at Main Square Shoppes, 318 Delaware Avenue in Delmar. Many of the members of the group are Bethlehem residents who have spectacular gardens, and they divide and pot up some of their prized perennials and Siberian irises for the sale. We like to think that we’ve helped make Bethlehem a more beautiful place because we’ve been providing the people of the town with a great selection of Siberian Irises for so many years!

The sale has been an annual event for over 15 years, and for the past 10 years Dennis Corrigan, owner of Main Square, has generously offered his front parking lot for the sale. The proceeds of the sale are used to bring guest speakers to the free monthly meetings of the Capital Hudson Iris Society.

This year the sale will be held on Sunday, May 20th, from 9 a.m. until noon, rain or shine. Members of the group will be there for advice and to help you make the best selections for your site. There will be sun and shade perennials, plants that do well in clay, others that grow in sand.

And remember, perennials are the plants that come back bigger year after year, so you don’t need to plant as often. Whatever your needs, you can probably find quite a few very special plants for your garden.

This spring sale specializes in Siberian irises, with over 200 pots and usually 40 or so varieties. Siberian Irises do really well in this area – they are adaptable to all kinds of soil, wet or dry conditions, and grow into large clumps that make a beautiful show in just a couple of years. There won’t just be blue irises, there will be yellow, pink, lilac and white irises. Siberian irises have smaller flowers than the showy tall bearded irises, but they are much easier to grow and because they make a big clump in a relatively short time, they give the gardener a lot of satisfaction with fewer care requirements.

In addition to Siberian irises, the sale will have hundreds of perennials.

Most are from the members’ gardens, but there will be some extra special plants purchased from a wholesaler to broaden the choice and bring in some different cultivars. We’ll have unusual daylilies, many different kinds of hostas (not the boring ones), foxgloves, coneflowers, phlox, yarrow, and other more exotic perennials that do well in sun, part sun, and even full shade.

A letter from

Bethlehem Town Hall National Volunteer Week took place last month, complete with celebrations, proclamations and special events. In Bethlehem, as usual, there were far too many individual acts of volunteerism to recount. For example, I was among the groups that turned out for a community clean-up and to help plant trees at Five Rivers Environmental Center.

Volunteerism is broad term that covers all the myriad things we accomplish though uncompensated efforts. It brings to mind both lofty ambitions and everyday needs.

As stated in a Presidential Proclamation, “From the American Revolution and the Seneca Falls Convention to the everyday acts of compassion and purpose that move millions to make change in their communities, our Nation has always been at its best when individuals have come together to realize a common vision.”

But while we celebrate volunteerism, the term can also carry an unacknowledged dismissive connotation – that needs met through voluntary efforts are somehow less important than those met through other means. If these activities were really important, in other words, they’d be required by law or supported by tax revenues.

Nothing could be further from the truth. First, many of the things we provide through voluntary effort might otherwise need to be carried out by government, and perhaps not as well, or at far greater cost. There are also many areas of endeavor that simply can’t be carried out other than by voluntary efforts.

Bethlehem relies on volunteers to provide fire protection and most emergency medical services; last year a total of 5,677 emergency calls were handled by 373 volunteers.

Without volunteers, we would not have the amenities and improvements sponsored by the Bethlehem

Garden Club and the Progress Club. Neither would we have the existing 1.9 miles of rail trail open, nor the prospect of opening additional sections. Many school and community sports programs wouldn’t exist. We would not have the charitable contributions and works of the Rotary, Kiwanis or the Chamber of Commerce.

There are too many examples to recount, but we simply would not have the quality community we enjoy without the vast number of services and activities carried out by religious groups or charitable associations.

Town government has always relied on volunteers, particularly for our Seniors programs. We are also relying more and more on voluntary citizen advisory groups, and over the past several months the Town Board has already taken action based on two reports from the Budget Advisory Team (lockbox pilot, fund balance policy) and we’ll soon be acting on improvements in our Town ethics code based on the work of that Advisory Committee.

In many areas voluntary efforts can be even more important than the decisions we make collectively through governmental action. Each act of volunteerism is a citizen taking action to help improve our collective destiny. The goal is always a better community in some way or another, whether we’re helping out individuals or contributing toward a broader need.

Civic and even political involvement is another form of volunteerism which is vitally important. Much of what we do together as a community is done through public institutions and government, and these institutions only reflect what we the people ask for in terms of our own civic and political involvement.

Not everyone can volunteer, and for many of us the opportunity arises as other responsibilities ebb. But for all of us, volunteering can be a way to help take action to improve our communal destiny. It’s a good thing.

A 30th anniversary concert, will be presented by the Friendship Singers on Friday, May 18, at 7:30 p.m., at the Delmar Reformed Church.

The event is free and open to the public, and will feature many of the group's favorite numbers from over the past 30 years. All donations will go to the Bethlehem Senior Services organization.

There are now 16 singers in the group, with direction

by Marie Liddle, piano accompaniment by Linda Drew, and tympani by Bill Reusswig. Dick Feldman, retired Bethlehem English teacher and musical theater expert, provides the choreography as a tribute to the late Muriel Welch.

Historic Bethlehem In 1915, pupils of District School #13 at Hurstville surround their teacher Miss Clancy. Hurstville draws its name from William Hurst who in 1861 established a hotel on the site of the old Log Tavern on the northwest corner of New Scotland and Whitehall Roads. Hurstville and nearby Karlsfeld were part of the Town of Bethlehem for 170 years before they were annexed by the City of Albany of 1963. Learning takes place through regular curriculum, projects, trips, and research. The Lab School is entirely self funded. Students raise money by winter and spring plant sales and our annual BBQ. Lab School is asking for your help.

We are once again looking for board of examiner participants for June 18th and 19th. We also have a need for speakers to give a seminar at the end of year retreat at Silver Bay. ARE YOU READY TO TAKE CONTROL OF ASTHMA?

Grass, pollen – Spring is here. For some, that means asthma begins to flare up. By understanding when and how to your asthma medications, knowing what to do when an asthma attack creeps up, and reducing your asthma triggers you can take control of your asthma.

What is asthma control?

Asthma control means something different to everyone.

Overall, it means having minimal to no symptoms (coughing, shortness of breath, wheezing, chest tightness) during the day, at night or before, during or after exercise. Control means not having to miss any work or school due to asthma and having no emergency room visits.

The National Asthma Education and Prevention Program define asthma control as the following o Asthma symptoms 2 days per week or less o Waking at night 2 nights per month or less o Using your quick relief or rescue inhaler 2 days per week or less o Having no interference with your normal activities

Why are medications controlling asthma?

Asthma medications can be divided into two categories – controller medicines and quick relief or rescue medicines.

Controller medications are to be taken every day to reduce the swelling and inflammation in your airways to keep you breathing freely. Quick relief (or “rescue”) medications are used when you are having asthma symptoms to open up your airways and help you breathe better fast. Talk with your health care team to clarify which medications to take when. This information should be written down as part of your Asthma Action Plan which can also remind you what to do when you are having an attack. Parents – don’t forget to give a copy of the action plan to the school nurse, relatives and child care providers.

There are so many new and different asthma medication devices available that sometimes, patients find it hard to keep track of which one you need to breath in fast with, which ones you breath in slow, which need to be shaken, which should not be shaken.. the list goes on and on. The National Asthma Education and Prevention program notes that not using a medication device properly reduces asthma control.

Asthma triggers are things that can make your asthma worse.

Every person has different triggers, however, common ones are allergens (pet dander, dust mites, cockroaches, mold or pollen) or irritants (tobacco smoke, strong odors, cleaning products). Dust mites are microscopic bugs that are found in places such as mattresses, pillows, carpets, stuffed toys, curtains and more. Allergy testing and talking with your health care team can help identify your triggers. Viral or bacterial infections can also make asthma worse.

How can I reduce my exposure to things that trigger my asthma?

Using dust mite covers, washing bedding and frequent vacuuming can limit exposure to dust mites and pet dander.

If you are allergic to house pets and can not find them a new home, keep the pets out of your bedroom and off the furniture. Keeping a smoke free home and work place is also important. Your health care provider may recommend an influenza and/or pneumococcal vaccination to protect you against common viral or bacterial infections.

Talk to your doctor and your Four Corners Pharmacists about your asthma and how to control it. The New York State Department of Health (www.health.state.ny.us/nysdoh/ asthma/index.htm), The American Lung Association (www. lungusa.org), Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (www.asthmaandallergies.org), and the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (http://www.aaaai.org) all provide information that can help you control your asthma.

A Special Day of Recognition is scheduled for all Veterans of D-Day, living and past, and a day of Remembrance of the D-Day Invasion, June 6, 1944. Last June 2011, the event had 30 Survivors of D-Day and a total of 275 people attended. This year there are 7 more survivors located.

Greetings fellow readers, Since I last wrote to you I have had some uplifting news here in the store. Capital Region Living will post in their May issue that our cozy little bookstore has been chosen #1by their readers! We are thrilled and grateful to all who voted for us. We are certainly a unique bookstore and I am proud to say that I have been the manager since 2007.

Barbara & Larry Boord bought the store in May 2008. The store changed its name (we dropped the Tea &) putting a slightly different business vision into effect. Larry, Linda, (Seamus) & I work the store with Barb doing all the important behind the scenes work.

What makes Tattered Pages so unique?

-Over 18, 000 titles in our store…all logged into our computer database.

-Responsibly recycled books offered at 20-60% off the original price -Trade credits are applied to the accounts of those customers who bring in inventory for our store (no more than 8 books at a time) -Trade credits are used to take an additional 30% off the price of books for trade credit customers.

-We offer a “reserve” option where customers can have titles “on reserve” until they come in. We call immediately and hold them until pickup.

-We will order books (for a small fee) that we don‛t have in the store.

-We made over $3,000 in donations to local charities & organizations for their fundraisers last year.

-We collect items for Blue Star Mothers through out the year for their mailings to our troops. (I have a son in the army and Barb & Larry have a son, son-in-law, and granddaughter in the military as well.)

-We have a website at: www.tatteredpages365.webs.com and accept e-mail requests at tatteredpages365@yahoo.com. We will take wishlists and put them into your account on reserve.

-We are more than a “retail” experience…we do our best to connect our customers with just the right book, lead them to that book and do research for them in their searches. Love our informal book discussions!

-We have the cutest “greeter dog”, in the Capital District!

-We ourselves responsibly recycle…weeding our books periodically for responsible removal from the store. We pride ourselves on reusing bags, paper, doing our best to keep our community green and “well read”.

-We often have books that are newly published (at 50% off) we have the “Bethlehem” book written by our town historian for sale in the store.

I have had inquiry if we carry anything new? If you haven‛t read it yet…isn‛t it new to you? We also carry made in America greeting cards at $1/6 for $5. We have over 300 cookbooks, about as many in crafting, gardening, hobby and humor.

Last month I mentioned that I was giving my granddaughter, Trinity, a beautifully illustrated edition of Tales of Brer Rabbit. I received a lot of comments from customers that appreciated what I had written regarding much loved tales that have received condemnation as being politically incorrect. The Tales of the South were similar to Aesop‛s fables in that the animals were outwitting one another and carried no racist tones. Both my son and my granddaughter are enjoying them immensely. We even had a discussion about the last nature hike that we took where we saw rabbits, turtles, birds, deer and even a fox!

We discussed our time on the lake in Maine where we see loons, ducks, chipmunks, red squirrel, hummingbirds, chickadees, dragonflies and at times beaver and moose.

Trinity shared that she writes books about these animals with pictures in her kindergarten class as part of her science/observation class!

Books are truly the hobby that keeps on giving. I feel so sad when I hear people say that they don‛t read!

Don‛t read! I think they mean for pleasure! So sad! When I finish a good book…I don‛t want it to end. I was just discussing with customers how sad I was upon the end of my last book. I found the main character to be noble, courageous and very simple in his loves and desires. He was also a zombie. Before you judge me…Zombie, Ohio: A Tale of the Undead by Scott Kenemore is an extremely well written, tale of humanity that deals with a recently “risen dead‛s” search for identity, purpose, and morality told with humor and pathos. Different than any “urban fantasy” I have read before, I had to take a few days before starting another book as I continued to process the story as a whole. I do have two other books going at this time one a dystopian fiction; Incarceron and the other a memoir written by a local author Jill Marie Morris; 207 about the true events at 207 19th St., Watervliet, NY an alleged haunted house.

My boss, Barbara, just finished the Hunger Games and agreed with me that it was one of the best series she had read in a while. She just brought in the latest Anne Rice; The Wolf Gift saying that it was a good old fashioned horror story with insight into the life of the werewolf from their point of view.

Just a reminder for parents…we have a great array of chapter books from grade 1-high school student.

We just acquired quite a few books in the Dear America/ journal diary series, Magic Treehouse, Horrible Harry ,“Fairies” books, Sarah Dessen & Zoey Dean books.

As the weather becomes warmer…you will see our door open to welcome you for all your reading needs. Don‛t forget that you can always call to see if we have a book in store for you…but we‛d love to see you come and browse and have your new favorite book find you! During May we are continuing to sell all books in our gardening section at an additional 10% off.
