Hi Bethlehem, By now your lfe is probably as hectic as ours, with spring sports, concerts and full weekends of enjoying the weather. However.... there is less than two months until the end of school! Hang in there! Sunday, May 8th is Mother’s Day. Take the time to thank your Mom for you put her through over the years.....at least send a card! The Memorial Day Parade will take place Monday, May 30th. It’s great to see so many neighbors get together at one time. I hope you can make it.

CAR CARE TIPS Safety and Maintenance Tips for Busy Women A lot of women are living at a hectic pace these days. Many work full time. They take their kids to day care and after-school activities. And a lot of women have the additional responsibility of being the household “car care manager.” The fact is, women are busier than ever. According to the U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics: • In 2002, nearly four in every five mothers of school-aged children were in the paid workforce. • In 2003, there were 3.7 million female multiple jobholders. • The number of working women has grown from 18.4 million in 1950 to nearly 65 million in 2003. To help keep women “on the go,” we encourage you to visit your local auto repair shop to help ensure that your vehicle is up to date on its maintenance needs. The maintenance inspections can point out items needing service that can help a vehicle run better, last longer, retain its value and provide optimal safety and security. Here are safety and maintenance tips from Mr. Goodwrench that will help your vehicle run at its best heading into the spring and summer travel seasons. Air pressure: To help avoid under-inflation, the Rubber Manufacturers Association (RMA) recommends checking your tires’ air pressure at least once a month and before every long trip. Tires must be checked when they are cold - that is, before they have been run no more than one mile (1.6 km). Under-inflation is the leading cause of tire blowouts. Tread wear/When to buy a new tire: You can check your tires for proper tread by taking a penny and pinching Lincoln ‘s body between your thumb and forefinger. Put Lincoln ‘s head in a groove on the tread. If any part of Lincoln ‘s head is obscured by the tread, the tire has good tread. If you can see above his head, you need to get new tires. In addition to tires, these key items need to be inspected: Batteries: A weak battery can leave you stranded. Brakes: An expert inspection can determine whether your brakes are functioning properly with full braking capability. Windshield wipers: Old or worn windshield wipers can lead to poor visibility in adverse weather conditions. Headlamps: Properly aimed headlamps are a must for optimizing your visibility - both your seeing and your being seen. Fluid levels: Improper fluid levels - including coolant, oil, power steering, transmission, and brake fluid can affect vehicle performance and safety. Belts and hoses: A broken belt or ruptured hose can cause costly engine damage and travel delays. Read more: http://www.motortrend.com

Neighbors Next Door

Nick Mertik / The Boy Chef “They are the very best cookies. They are nice and soft and when you take a bite the chocolate just melts in your mouth and tastes really, really good.” These are the words of Bethlehem’s Nick Mertik, ten-year-old Eagle Elementary student and Pumpkin Chocolate Chip Cookie enthusiast. He’s also known as The Boy Chef. The Boy Chef is more than your average kid who likes to hang around the kitchen, looking for a snack. He went from a little boy who loved to help in the kitchen, to being the chef. All at the tender age of seven. At eight, he started making videos. It was his brother Ben’s idea, to record the recipes and put them together in one place. So he gave his little brother a website for his birthday. It turned a hobby into a passion. Now, Nick confidently stands in front of the camera, showing his audience how to create chili, quiche and barbeque sauce. He even has guest stars on his cooking videos. His guests so far have been friends, his father, and even Yiayia. Yiayia is Greek for grandmother, and she is one of his biggest influences. His younger brother is six years old and was officially crossed off the list of possible guest stars when he ran in front of the camera, while they were filming, and waved at the camera.

One of the best recipes he’s cooked up with his Yiayia was baked apples. When Nick described the apple dish they baked and ate together, it was almost like listening to a grown-up foodie someone who had been talking about food for decades. He started by telling me about Yiayia, how she likes to cook. Then, he talked about her baked apples. About how when he ate it, it was like warm applesauce on the inside. And when you cut open the apple, the warm juices just run out over all the apple. I was sold. One of Nick’s dreams is to cook food from all over the world. He’s started right here in the U.S., with his barbeque sauce. And his famous pumpkin cookies. And the chili, that’s spiced just right, a little smoky but not too spicy. In his culinary technique, he’s been to Nicaragua, creating a dish of rice and beans, and even deep-frying the chips to go along with it. Of course, he and his Yiayia have cooked the food of Greece many times together.

“How amazing would it be if a grown up came home from work and the whole dinner was ready?” Recently, The Boy Chef has been getting some good press. Fox News heard about him, and reporter Torie Wells came to the house to meet and do a story about Nick. I wondered, how did Fox News hear about The Boy Chef? “Funny story,” he tells me. And then, he describes how, when a Fox news crew was at his school filming a unrelated story, he waited patiently until they were finished filming. And then, he approached the camera crew. ”I said Hi! I’m The Boy Chef from theboychef.com.”Did he expect that they would call? “I didn’t think they’d call. But they did.” It was a pretty exciting moment for this sweet, shy boy who started helping in the kitchen, and ended up with his own website and video blog. After the Fox news story, there were many comments on his blog, and people were flocking to the site to see his recipes for themselves. Nick creates these videos now because he wants to help other kids, and other families. “How amazing would it be if a grown up came home from work and the whole dinner was ready? And made by the kids! That’s why I do my website because I want kids to know how to cook so they can help adults.” He has words of advice for kids before they think about stepping into the kitchen: always wash your hands first. And always be safe. Let the parents take hot pans out of the oven. continued p.20

Nick thinks that doing a lot of his own cooking contributes to his good eating habits. His mother assured me that he likes many different foods, and isn’t afraid to try something new. Recently, he tried oysters and lobster. Both were filed as good food, and perhaps one day they will inspire Nick in a recipe on his blog. Thinking about the future, Nick believes that he will one day be a chef. He wants to attend the prestigious Culinary Institute in Hyde Park, NY. When I asked him what kind of chef he’d like to be, he said, “The chef that I am! I want to be an all around chef. It doesn’t matter what it is... I just like to cook it.” Nick wants to work in a place that makes good food for everyone. “Why cook food only one person would like? I want to make everyone happy.” For now, he’s reaching people by working hard on his blog and sharing recipes through his videos. And he guarantees: try the Pumpkin Chocolate Chip cookies. You’ll be very happy.

Celebrating the Mothers in your life

Mother’s Day: A Brief History Not just another “Hallmark Holiday,” Mother’s Day has been celebrated in some form or another for centuries. The earliest recorded celebrations of Mother’s Day date all the way back to ancient Egypt with the annual festival to honor the goddess Isis, known as the mother of the pharaohs. Like the ancient Egyptians, the ancient Romans and Greeks too had annual festivals honor goddesses, in particular the goddess Rhea, who was thought to be the mother of all gods and goddesses. The term Mother’s Day was first officially used in 1870 when Julia Ward Howe made her famous Mother’s Day Proclamation. Also known for writing the “Battle Hymn of the Republic,” Howe wanted a day for all mothers to come together and protest the Civil War in which she saw too many sons killing the sons of other mothers. June 2nd was originally designated as Mother’s Day but soon after Howe’s death the holiday failed to catch on. Later, Anna Reeves Jarvis started celebrating Mother’s Day as a way to reunite families that were torn apart by the Civil War; this holiday was known as Mother’s Friendship Day. When Anna Reeves Jarvis died her daughter, Anna M. Jarvis made sure that Mother’s Day would not die with her. Anna M. Jarvis campaigned for Mother’s Day to be made an official holiday as a way to remember her mother and honor the peace that she fought for. The first official Mother’s Day was held on May 10, 1908 at Andrew’s Methodist Church in Grafton, West Virginia. That same year Nebraska Senator, Elmer

24

Burkett petitioned for Mother’s Day to be made a national holiday but was defeated. However, in 1914 Woodrow Wilson declared Mother’s Day a national holiday to be held the second Sunday in May. Ways to Celebrate While many mothers will say that just being with their family is enough on Mother’s Day, here are some ideas how to spend the holiday. • Give mom the day off! Mom does enough cooking and cleaning all year, let her sit back and relax. Wait on mom for a change! • Take mom out to a nice brunch • Plan a picnic in the park. With the weather finally getting nicer it’s the perfect time to get out and enjoy some fresh air with the whole family. • Make mom something. Mom’s always love something that was made with love that they can put on the refrigerator! • Send mom flowers. Carnations are the designated flowers of Mother’s Day. However you choose to celebrate the holiday, here’s wishing all the mothers out there a very happy Mother’s Day! of this month, the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) is offering these 10 tips on how to identify animal cruelty. 1. Be aware. Without phone calls from concerned citizens who report cruelty in their neighborhoods, humane organizations wouldn’t know about most instances of animal abuse. Get to know the animals in your neighborhood. By being aware, people are more likely to notice, for example, that the dog next door that was once hefty has lost weight rapidly--a possible indicator of abuse. 2. Learn to recognize animal cruelty. The following are some signs: • Wounds on the body; patches of missing hair; extremely thin, starving animals; limping, etc. • An owner striking or otherwise physically abusing an animal. • Dogs that are repeatedly left alone without food and water, often chained up in a yard. • Dogs who have been hit by cars—or are showing any of the signs listed above—and have not been taken to a veterinarian. • Dogs that are kept outside without shelter in extreme weather conditions. • Animals that cower in fear or act aggressively when approached by their owners. 3. Know who to call to report animal cruelty. Every state and town is different. In our area contact the Mohawk and Hudson River Humane Society at 518-434-8128. 4. Provide as much information as possible when reporting animal cruelty. It helps to write down the type of cruelty that you witnessed, who was involved, the date of the incident and where it took place. 5. Call or write your local law enforcement department and let them know that investigating animal cruelty should be a priority. Animal cruelty is a CRIME--and the police MUST investigate these crimes. 6. Know your state’s animal cruelty laws. They vary from state to state. You can visit the ASPCA web site at http://www.aspca.org/statelaws to find information about the laws in your state. 7. You can fight for the passage of strong anti-cruelty laws on federal, state and local levels by joining the ASPCA Advocacy Brigade to lobby your legislators and help get the laws passed. 8. Set a good example for others. If you have pets, be sure to always show them the love and good care that they deserve. It’s more than just food, water, and adequate shelter. If you think your animal is sick, bring him to the veterinarian. Be responsible and have your animals spayed or neutered.

9. Talk to your kids about how to treat animals with kindness and respect. One of the most powerful tools for preventing cruelty to animals is education. Children not only need to learn what they shouldn’t do, but also what they can and should do. When children see that their pets are happy and loving, it will make the child feel good, too. 10. Support your local animal shelter with donations of money, food or supplies. Volunteering your time or fostering a shelter animal is another good way to make a difference. A letter from Bethlehem Town Hall

OPEN IN BETHLEHEM In Bethlehem we value openness and open government. Openness, in its many forms is something that defines much of the reason that our country was created. People rebelled from England because of a belief that they had no say in their government. Cries of “no taxation without representation” might well be the clearest indicator of how essential openness – and open government – are to our form of government. Openness is also the underpinning of the four freedoms recounted by President Franklin Roosevelt - freedom of expression and worship and freedom from want and fear. Freedom of Expression and worship both require us to be accepting of concepts that may be different from those we already know. Want is conquered by openness because as we share resources with one another we are extending an open hand. In the same way, fear of the unknown struggles to gain root when openness is presented. These essential values translated into the 21st Century – demonstrate why governments should value openness. As an example of this, during the last year our town changed the way that it presents its Town Board meeting materials so the public could see appropriate supporting documentation – also known as attachments – that the Board sees. A process was undertaken to develop a rational method to give the public access to these documents. Normally creation of a policy would have had staff leading an effort to create a policy at the direction of the Supervisor and Town Board. While the Board had discussed a policy more than a year ago, action was not taken at that time. Prior to formal development of a legally supported policy I sought public

input by posting attachments on a website. What followed was the open and deliberate evolution of a new policy. The policy was revised and revised again. All told, seven different versions of the document were created over the course of about six months. Every member of the Town Board, the Supervisor, the Town Clerk and our Director of MIS services, as well as dozens of members of the community had a hand in designing the policy. The policy, called the Attach and Release Policy, electronically makes available to the public a copy of all agenda attachments without the need for a FOIL request. The policy also provides a process and rationale for treating confidential and sensitive documents in an appropriate manner. The policy is, as far as I know, a first in the State and demonstrates that we can lead the State with our commitment to providing quality services while actively collaborating with the public. This policy’s effect has been a valuable addition to the experience of government. It means that we all can experience meetings as a community rather than as a government separated from the people it represents. It has meant that at Board meetings we get additional insightful questions from the public. It means that with few exceptions, people can know what information we see before making decisions. There is an essential and strong value that we all gain from participating in this approach. Openness also means creating forums for meaningful exchanges of ideas. One example of openness and a forum for the exchange of ideas is my article written here, since Supervisor Messina has encouraged Town Board members to write a piece for the Supervisors Column in Our Towne. Bethlehem is also blessed with community volunteers that create structures both inside and outside of town government where commerce – not just the exchange of money, but also the exchange of ideas – can take place. Our town has many volunteer committees like the 20/20 Implementation Committee, the Local Waterfront Revitalization Program effort, the Route 9W corridor study and the Delaware Avenue Corridor study which are all contributing to efforts to bring new visions and opportunities to town.

Many of us have had occasion to chat with a friend at the Delmar Farm Market. I was there last year and had a great conversation with a town resident when it dawned on me that rather than just being a place to shop, the Farm Market is a place where a community gets together to recount the life they have chosen and their community experiences. Recent news reports have also indicated that the market is acting as a micro business incubator and has already helped to create at least one new business in the Capital. Region. The Market is a community-supported experiment that is transforming commerce. I attended a meeting of community volunteers who were tackling issues related to youths in Haswell Farms. These volunteers were working together to create a plan in conjunction with Town police to ensure that the community would have a chance at avoiding events that caught the national news last summer. It was amazing that people who did not know one another would share their stories about issues that had existed for years which remained unresolved. They opened up about what could be done and since then, an active discussion has taken place on a Facebook page posted to encourage further discussion. Being open to the exchange of new ideas and the possibilities of technology as a leverage point means that communities grow stronger. Open space is also an issue where openness has played a great role in the last year. Recently the Town hosted a meeting with hundreds of residents to hear community views about the acquisition of the Normanside Country Club. The most fascinating part of the meeting was seeing how many people felt so passionately about the issue. Some were of the opinion that the acquisition was the only possible choice, others thought it was not. The outstanding characteristic of the Normanside meeting was the civility of tone, the candor of the conversation and the willingness to discuss an issue as a community. While there was passion in the discussions, everyone who spoke was polite, attentive and thoughtful. The Board knew that without that meeting, any action would have been illegitimate. I applaud my colleagues on the Town Board – Councilwoman Dawson, Councilman Jordan, Councilman Kotary and Supervisor

$2.00 OFF Custom Packing

Messina who all agreed that it an essential part of the process. The decision we made was one informed and forged by the opinion of the people who attended the meeting and those who wrote to each and every one of us to share their view, and with the best factual information that the Board could obtain. Information gathering, sharing with the public, listening and learning are all elements that should precede decision-making. In that meeting, I remember thinking to myself that in my career as public servant I have never seen such a perfect demonstration of how democracy is supposed to work. There are still areas where we can improve access and openness. There is wide support amongst the Town Board to enable live video from town board meetings. We can accomplish this goal before the end of the year and we should. In December I will complete four years of serving on the Town Board. With my prior experience on the Zoning Board it will be six years that I have spent working for the Town and its residents. I hope that people I have interacted with know how much I have valued their commitment to government and an open process. For me, this value is the basis for our even having a system of governance in the first place. It is the essential mechanism with which representative government must be empowered. It is a good in and of itself that needs to be attended to and fostered. We are open in Bethlehem and we are stronger as a community because of this value. Sincerely,

Mark Hennessey Councilman

Health Matters

Some general rules of thumb: *Avoid packaged & processed foods and instead eat whole foods. The closer food is to coming straight from the ground, tree or animal, the better.

Back to Basics!

*Prepare your food at home whenever possible. You’ll have more control over the quality of the ingredients.

This is the second time in the calendar year when the media bombards us with ads and articles and infomercials about weight loss: “Get 8 pack abs and a bikini-ready body in 3 weeks!”

* Keep junk or snack “foods” out of your house. Don’t kid yourself. If you bring it home “for the kids/husband/roommate” you will end up eating it.

Here’s challenge: put yourself on a media starvation diet for 4 weeks. Get rid of fitness magazines, switch off the informercials and stop surfing the internet for the latest quick fix program. All that matters is what works for you. Pay attention to the chatter in your head. What self-defeating thoughts, habits and beliefs are keeping you from reaching your goals? How much and what are you really eating? How often are you exercising? Be honest and then write down everything you eat and drink (and how much) and your activity level. This sounds like an obvious, easy thing to do, but lots of us balk at doing it. Get over it and get on with it! Stick to BASICS: fat-blasting/muscle building exercise & recovery, sound nutrition, and support are what will work long term.

1) Exercise. First, try getting off the machines! Your body is the only machine you need. Treadmills and other machines are less effective due to the fact that they assist movement. For example, treadmills pull your foot backward as you walk or run which is why people notice a change in their speed when they walk or run outdoors. If you want the challenge and inspiration of exercising in a group setting, join a fitness boot camp. You’ll see real results for less money than you’d spend on a home gym. Do bodyweight training such as pushups, air squats, burpees, and planks; use kettlebells, TRX, resistance bands, anything that makes your muscles work in all planes of motion. You’ll get stronger by challenging your body to move the way nature intended it to: reaching, bending, twisting, pulling and pushing and jumping. If you prefer to work out in the privacy of your own home, I recommend 1) TRX Portable Gym www.trxportablegym.com and 2) Resistance Bands www.workoutwithbands.com. Both are portable and take up very little floor space. Kettlebells are excellent for home use as well, but several sessions with a qualified instructor to learn basic moves is essential before training on your own.

2) Nutrition. Find a meal plan that you know you can stick to. If you have no idea where to start, meet with a qualified nutritionist who can get you started. Pay attention - do they ask you questions about your habits and health and food history? There really is no one-size-fits-all approach to eating.

36

3) Get support. A group or an individual, anyone who knows what your goals are and will hold you accountable (in an encouraging way!) can make all the difference. Simple doesn’t mean easy. Stuff - LIFE - happens and can and will de-rail us despite our best intentions. Decide that when you get off course, you’ll stop and figure out what happened, dust yourself off and get back on track. Because getting and staying healthy can be hard, but it’s ALWAYS going to be worth it.

Chinese proverb Dear Fellow Readers, Today it is a beautiful “screaming” blue sky day. The morning air was crisp and misty as Seamus and I took our morning walk. The daffodils are finally in bloom as are the hyacinths and forsythia. The afternoons are filled with the sounds of children coming out into the street in my suburban neighborhood, riding books, playing basketball, practicing catch (baseball and lacrosse), riding bikes and rollerblading. My chair is now outside, in full view of my birdfeeders. I have finally had the chance to sit out there with a glass of ice tea and a good book while Seamus stretches on the lawn. As my hosta starts to poke through, I have turned to the many gardening books in Tattered Pages as I plan my garden. So, this month, all books in our Gardening section are an extra 10% off in the store. We have quite the selection from Sunset, Burpee, Rodale and others. This includes any bird books as well. Remember all of our books (close to 18,000 titles) are already marked down between 20-60% off the original publisher’s price as customers bring them into our inventory. We don’t “buy” books but the trade credit program, for the books that you bring in, takes an additional 30% off the price of the books that you purchase. (We ask that books are in clean, re-sellable condition…no more than 8 books at a time for consideration, please.) We know that we offer the best price on books in the Capital Region when a customer participates in our trade credit program. I am always thrilled when the “snowbirds” start to reappear in the store. I love to hear their tales from their winter in the South. They often share the new authors and book titles that they discovered while away. They bring in books to add to their trade credit account as they search out more books here by their newest author. I still couldn’t believe the number of Clive Cussler books I sold to one returning regular who just discovered his books this winter. I was also thrilled to see Josh, who had moved away and recently returned to the area. He said I was one of his first stops once he was settled. He headed straight for Michael Connelly and Harlan Coben in mystery. It was great to see Russ back in the store, as well. An avid Grisham reader, he put a few books under his arm as he carried his 3 month old daughter in his other. In the 4 years that I have worked in the bookstore,

I have met thousands of people, and for those who continue to come, I think of them as extended family. The other day, regular reader/customer, Tedi brought in 10 paranormal romances by Gena Showalter, Maggie Shayne, Lynsay Sands and Kim Harrison. We discussed the latest paranormal series that we enjoyed. I sold her on trying a new author and series. My bookshop friend, Elisa, introduced me to the MacKayla Lane “Fever” series by Karen Marie Moning. An extremely quick read, this series pulls you into the “fae” world of Seelie/ Unseelie fae, the ancient Celtic world of Druids, charms and the battle of good and evil in modern day Dublin, Ireland. Our heroine, a 22 year old Southern party girl whose previous life consisted of lazing in the Georgia sunshine as she planned her wardrobe for the next party, now is fighting (in Buffy the Vampire Slayer type fashion) alongside sidhe-seers fortressed in an ancient abbey. As in most paranormal-romance, this is adult reading, and has become the number one rising genre of fiction today. For the more “serious” readers, may I suggest the book most recommended by my bookshop friends this past month and currently waiting on my nightstand: “Major Pettigrew’s Last Stand.” My friend, Lin, an avid reader and book club member, recently brought in her copy and said that it was a big hit with her reading discussion group. Oprah Magazine, from their review, says: “The beauty of this engaging book is in the characters…a sweet story about the unexpected miracle of later-life love”. The Daily Beast reported: “Major Ernest Pettigrew is a staunchly traditional English widower having trouble navigating his changing circumstances…a classic comedy of love and manners in a small English town.” May brings us Mother’s Day and Memorial Day…so, for the month of May all memoirs and biographies will be an additional 10% off. We have a lovely selection in this section with historical, entertainment, humorous and inspirational figures featured in both biography and memoir. Among the most popular titles purchased over this past year: “Eat Pray Love” by Elizabeth Gilbert, “Half Broke Horses” by Jeannette Walls, “In a Sunburned Country” by Bill Bryson, and John Krakauer’s “Under the Banner of Heaven”. Also, for May we will have all Debbie Macomber books, in romance, for an additional 10% off as well, included in this would be her popular Cove series and her Blossom Street series as well. In closing, I want to thank all who voted for us in the Times Union’s Best of the Capital Region poll. As of this writing, I do not know how

we did, but I would like to thank you and all those who frequent Tattered Pages Used Books. Check out our website at www.tatteredpages365.webs. com, or come on by for a visit and meet the cutest greeter dog around, Seamus. Until then…I wish you well as you get lost in a good book!

Happy Reading…Happy Spring!

FINANCIAL FOCU$ Can You Save for Retirement and Education? The school year is coming to a close, which means that if you have young children, you are now one year closer to college days — and college bills. At the same time, you are moving nearer to your own retirement. Can you save for college while you put money away for retirement? Yes — but it will take planning, patience and discipline. Your first step is to be aware of the challenges you will face. As you know, the financial crisis of 2008 and early 2009 took a bite out of just about everyone’s retirement portfolio. And even though the markets have bounced back strongly, you might still have some ground to make up in your 401(k), Individual Retirement Account (IRA) or other accounts. At the same time, budgetary pressures may lead to reductions in Pell Grants and other federally backed financial aid to students, so you may need to provide more assistance to your children than you once might have thought.

44

To deal with these challenges and help yourself make progress toward your college/retirement objectives, consider the following moves: Establish some priorities. How much should you save and invest for retirement versus college? Also, how much of the college costs would you like to cover: 100%, 50% or perhaps a set dollar amount? There’s no one “right” answer for everyone — you’ll have to establish priorities based on your preferences and family situation. But once you’ve set these priorities, you’ll have some guiding principles to govern your savings and investment decisions. Put time on your side. The earlier you start saving for both your retirement and your children’s college education, the better your chances of reaching your goals. Choose the right investment vehicles. You may want to work with a financial advisor to choose the appropriate mix of investments for your needs. But in general, it’s a good idea to contribute as much as you can afford to your 401(k) or other employer-sponsored retirement account. Your contributions are generally made with pretax dollars, and your earnings can grow tax deferred. And whether

or not you have access to a 401(k) or other employer-sponsored plan, you can probably also contribute to a traditional IRA, which offers tax-deferred earnings, or a Roth IRA, which provides tax-free earnings, provided you’ve held your account at least five years and you don’t start taking withdrawals until you’ve reached age 59½. To save for college, you may want to explore a 529 plan, which also provides tax-free earnings, provided they are used for qualified higher education expenses.* Keep investing. The financial markets will always move up and down — so in some months, you might not like what you see on your investment statements. But the most successful investors keep investing in good times and bad. If you decide to take a “timeout” from investing and head to the sidelines during a market slump, you could miss out on the next rally.

By following these suggestions, you can keep moving forward toward two special times in your life: when your children attain the higher education that can help them succeed in life and when you can enjoy the retirement for which you’ve worked so hard. What Should I know About Lyme Disease? children remain outdoors longer. (aapnews.aappublications.org)

Submitted By: Four Corners Pharmacy Christi Kearns, Doctor of Pharmacy Candidate, Albany College of Pharmacy & Health Sciences Jennifer Cerulli, Pharm.D., Pharmacist, Four Corners Pharmacy & Associate Professor ACPHS

IIn this month’s “Ask the Pharmacist” we will answer some important questions about the seasonal concern of deer ticks and Lyme disease. Deer are extremely prevalent in this area and ticks can be a worry to those who spend a lot of time outdoors in the spring and summer.

• Picardin: Picardin products can repel ticks and have low adverse effects. However, there is no safety data in children and therefore are not yet recommended for children. • Oil of menthol eucalyptus: Currently there is no evidence that these products repel ticks and therefore are not recommended for use. • Permethrin: Permethrin products are for use on clothing

What is Lyme Disease? Lyme disease is a tick-borne illness that is transmitted to humans by the bite of infected deer ticks. People who spend time in grassy and wooded areas are at an increased risk of exposure to Lyme disease. This risk is increased from MayAugust, when ticks are most active and abundant. If Lyme disease is left untreated it can progress to cause symptoms that affect the skin, nervous system, heart, and joints.

only, not on skin. These products kill ticks that come in contact with treated clothes. o Permethrin can remain effective for 2 weeks if treated clothes are not washed. Keep these clothes in a plastic bag when not in use. o These products are known to cause eye irritation and contact with eyes should be avoided.

What precautions should I take with children? How do I protect myself from Tick Bites? There are many ways to protect yourself from tick bites and stay safe while you are outside in the summer. Here are some easy tips: • Cover yourself: wear enclosed shoes, long pants and a long-sleeved shirt. • Tuck in loose clothing. • Check clothes and any exposed skin frequently for ticks while outdoors. • Stay on cleared, well-traveled trails. • Avoid sitting directly on the ground or in vegetation. • Keep long hair tied back, especially when going through wooded areas. • Wear light-colored clothing so that ticks can be spotted easily. • Use an appropriate insect repellent!

What Type of Repellent Should I Use? There are many different types of insect repellents available. It is important to know that not all repellents protect against ticks so be sure to check the ingredients. Ingredients that protect against ticks are: • DEET: Use an insect repellent with a 10-30% concentration of DEET. Apply the repellent to exposed skin and to the outside of clothing. o DEET comes in concentrations ranging from 5%-100%. The higher the concentration the higher the protection, but the higher the risk of side effects (headache, dizziness, bad smell, clothes damage). o Use the lowest concentration that you think will provide the protection you need. o The American Acedemy of Pediatrics states that products with 10%-30% DEET are safe and effective for children. Products with these concentrations are effective for about 2 hours – 5 hours respectably and should be reapplied if

People of any age can be a target for tick bites and can acquire Lyme disease. Children need protection and to be checked for tick bites. Children may be at greater risk for adverse reactions to repellents and an adult should assist in their application. • Keep repellents out of the reach of children. • Do not allow children to apply repellents to themselves. • Use only small amounts of repellent on children using 10% DEET. • Do not apply repellents to the hands of young children (it may result in accidental eye contact or ingestion) • Dress children in long sleeves and long pants tucked into boots or socks. • Use netting over strollers, playpens, etc. • DEET products are not recommended for children under 2 months of age

What do I do if I find a tick bite? 1. Don’t panic. Your chances of acquiring Lyme are low if the tick is removed during the first 24-36 hours 2. Remove the tick promptly and properly: - Using tweezers, grasp the tick as close to the skin as possible. - Gently pull the tick in a steady, upward motion. - Wash the area with a disinfectant.

When trying to remove the tick: • DO NOT touch the tick with your bare hands or try to remove it with your fingers • DO NOT squeeze the body of the tick as this may increase your risk of infection. • DO NOT put alcohol, nail polish remover or Vaseline on the tick. • DO NOT put a hot match or cigarette on the tick in an effort to make it “back out.” After a tick bite is discovered, call your physician to determine if you are at risk for Lyme disease. Your Support is Needed for Graduation Celebration One of the highlights of the Bethlehem Central High School graduation season for the past 20 years has been "Graduation Celebration," an all-night, alcohol-free party following graduation. This year's event will be held at the high school starting late on Friday, June 24 and running into the early morning hours. It is a fun-filled event featuring food, music, games, entertainment and prizes in a safe environment. Graduation Celebration is not a school-sponsored activity. Parents are already hard at work planning the celebration and raising the necessary funds. Bethlehem families and businesses have generously donated time, talents, prizes and money to past Graduation Celebrations and we need your assistance once again to help make this year's event a great success. Monetary donations will help defray the costs of the event and will also be used towards cash prizes for the graduates. Donations of prizes, such as gift certificates, electronics or small appliances for college, are also greatly appreciated. Parent volunteers are needed to do pre-event work on Graduation Celebration committees, such as Prizes, Games, Food and Decorations. In particular, parents of Juniors and underclassmen are being sought to work on the night of the event, especially on the second shift. Shift times are 10:30 p.m. to 1:30 a.m. and 1:00 a.m. to 4:00 a.m. To volunteer, e-mail Jayne Deane-White at jdeanesk8@ verizon.net or BCHSgradscelebrate@gmail.com. If your family or your business would like to make a monetary donation, please send a check made payable to Bethlehem Senior Celebration, c/o Mel Quinlan, 25 Douglas Rd., Delmar, NY 12054. For prize donations, please contact Lisa Allendorph at 475-7752 or Hannah Shuman at 441-0610. Additional information is on the Graduation Celebration website at: www.bcsd.k12.ny.us/high/raduationcelebration2011.html Questions about Graduation Celebration can be sent to BCHSgradscelebrate@gmail.com.

5 Worst Enemies Of Your Shiny Smile

Gourmet Bakery - Cookies & Pastries Stonewall Kitchen Products Unique Gift Items Catering Menu Available

Emma Cleary’s Cafe

We all know so well that using our teeth for opening nut shells or eating too much of sweet foods (especially chocolate or soft candies) may have serious destructive effects on our tooth enamel. In addition, there are many foods and drinks which can change color or damage our tooth enamel (both physically and qualitatively), cause plaque and serious dental diseases. Below, you can see a list of 5 most dangerous foods and drinks which should be considered 5 worst enemies of our shiny smile. 1. Carbonated drinks. First of all, soft and carbonated drinks usually have a lot of sugar, which is very harmful to our tooth enamel as it creates favorable environment for plaque formation. Besides, the majority of soft and carbonated drinks are very acidic, which is also very damaging and harmful to our teeth. 2. Citrus fruit. Occasional consumption of oranges, lemons or other citrus fruit can not bring to a huge damage to our teeth. However, these fruit are very rich in natural acids, which if consumed regularly can cause softening and erosion of tooth enamel, making our teeth weaker and less healthy. Therefore those, who love eating oranges or tangerines should make a habit of using mouthwash after eating these fruits. In addition, it is recommended to drink orange juice using a straw. 3. Tea and coffee. If you have a habit of drinking 3-4 cups of black coffee or black tea a day, you’ll need to pay increased attention on the color of your teeth. Along with tobacco smoking, regular consumption of coffee or black tea are the leading causes of tooth darkening, straining and discoloration. Rich in tannins and some acids, tea and coffee may have destructive effects on our teeth, but if you want to stick with your habit and still have a shiny smile, add a little milk to your daily cup of tea or coffee. Milk is proven to be able to neutralize negative effects of tannins on out teeth.

You may know that 2011 is the 150th anniversary of the Civil War. For its annual summer display the Bethlehem Historical Association has chosen to commemorate this pivotal period by focusing on the impact it had on our locality. Commencing June 19th, and continuing throughout the summer, BHA will use personal vignettes and local anecdotes as the basis for its presentation on the effect of the war on the daily lives of residents in the Capitol Region and, in particular, the Town of Bethlehem. To that end, the Association seeks help from the community in gathering information, artifacts and ephemera. If you have any such items and would be willing to share them, please contact Bob Mulligan, who will be happy to discuss this project with you. Do not hesitate to call if you are not certain of the identity or relevance of the items. Also, Bob will explain how the security of those items would be handled. Bob can be reached at 439 3802.

4. Wine. Wine is actually a controversial factor which has both positive and negative effect on our dental health. As a natural antiseptic, red wine can be used to lower the risks of dental plaque formation and preventing tooth decay. At the same time, wine is also rich in sugar and acids, which are damaging to our tooth enamel. Besides, recent studies have shown that a regular consumption of wine is linked to increased risks of tooth staining. Therefore, drink plenty of water after drinking wine to remove harmful components from your teeth. 5. Diet pills. The effects of diet pills sometimes cause reduced production of saliva by the glands. As a result, we have dry mouth and a very favorable environment for various bacteria and dental plaque formation. Remember that for an effective weight loss it is enough to combine a healthy balances diet with sufficient amounts of exercise. It is the healthiest solution, both for your body and teeth. 59
