Dear Constant Readers… What an unusual September we have had! It was one where I wish I had a pool or lake nearby for after work swims! With such tragic weather news, I have to admit I did a bit less reading because of being glued to the news and spending more time on Facebook checking on friends and family! But I did turn to a few choice books during the time of the hurricanes, earthquakes and our country’s involvement in foreign concerns. As a mother of a service man who has done 4 tours of Iraq, 2 of Afghanistan, 2 in Haiti…over 6 years of duty away from his wife and children, I turn to prayer and open my bible and books of inspiration and reflection to help me from day to day. Personally, for me, it is what has lifted me up whenever I have my son, his family and armed forces on my mind, as well as my Darlin’ Dad (88.5 yrs) and my wonderful family. Maybe because of being an Army Mother, with a dedicated son who trains others as paratroopers, demolition and firing ranges and military tactics, I tend to engage my mind in mysteries, sci-fi fantasy and history, to shift my focus. I love strong character development within the story. Now don’t judge me if there are paranormal/metaphysical situations in many…maybe the heroes being vampires, shapeshifters, witches, fae or slayers, suspending reality just enough so that I don’t reflect on some of the “real” scary situations in my reality! Reading is such a part of my life, not just a hobby, and I wish I could walk & read…that is a multi-task that I think would be great, though for me, probably not. I have tried to read on an exercise bicycle…too much vibration…and I certainly can’t read and swim…so…during my daily walks with Seamus I usually reflect, pray or listen to uplifting music. Here in the shop I always have music on…I think everyone should have background music or a soundtrack! I just recently discovered on Pandora a few musical artists who write great parody comedic music which lifts me up. Like little 3 minute stories, I love Jonathan Coulton (Code Monkey, Still Alive, Creepy Doll, IKEA, Shop-Vac), Weird Al Yankovic, They Might Be Giants (Birdhouse in your Soul, Particle Man, Istanbul (Not Constantinople)) and Rob Paravonian (Pachabel’s Rant). Of course, I still love my “Broadway tunes”…especially from “Wicked”, “Hamilton”, “Book of Mormon” and “Avenue Q”. (stories in song!)They all can be found on YouTube, of course. Not everyone’s taste…just giving a little insight. Yes, sight…you see, like many, I have been struggling with clear vision, eye pressure & cataracts and sometimes I have to put the book down. When that happens I put on Pandora and pull up these artists and get to work on something in the shop or at home. I will be having my pre-op on Oct. 3rd, so the store will be closing early on that day at 2pm. I will be having surgery on October 19, so the store will be closed on October 19th. On the 20th I will be having my follow up… so…check my Facebook page (Tattered Pages, LLC) or call the shop #518-447-9910 before coming over, for I am not sure how things will go for me.

Do you love historical fiction? Might I suggest Georgette Heyer, Tracy Chevalier, Bernard Cornwall, Alison Weir, and Jean Plaidy. The other day a customer asked as to where my “BestSelling Fiction” was located in the shop? I told her that I didn’t discriminate against those that didn’t do so well… so, they are blended together! You have to know your authors…I can always look it up on my data base! You can even call me, e-mail, or message me on FB if you are looking for a specific book! The Stone Houses of the Onesquethaw Valley Historic District By Susan E. Leath

While the vast majority of the Onesquethaw Valley Historic District is located in the town of New Scotland, I often claim it for Bethlehem. After all, when the old houses there were built, it would have been the town of Bethlehem. Except it turns out that is not quite accurate. The eight stone houses still standing in the district were all constructed prior to about 1767. Two are as early at 1719. That is well before Bethlehem was a town, New York a state and the United States a country. Cover Photo: The Bratt – Oliver House on Van Dyke Road has undergone many architectural changes over the years. It is now part of the Spinney community and was once part of the Leonard Farm. In those days, this area would have been part of the Manor of Rensselaerwyck, which was part of Albany County in the colony of New York. The town of Watervliet was erected in Albany County in 1788 after the American Revolution. The town of Bethlehem was carved out of that in 1793 and the Town of New Scotland split from Bethlehem in 1832. So, the stone houses of the Onesquethaw Valley Historic District would have officially been in the town of Bethlehem from 1793 to 1832.

The original section of the Van Der Zee Manor house was built circa 1754 by Harmon Van Der Zee. Harmon was a grandson of the legendary Storm Bradt. Storm is the son of Albert Bradt and Annetie Baernts, born aboard ship November 2, 1636 while the couple was crossing the Atlantic on the way to New Netherland. As an adult, he called himself Storm van der Zee, Storm from the Sea. Storm spent his first five months on the water as the Bratt’s ship did not arrive in Fort Orange until April 7, 1637. Today this is a private home on Rowe Road in New Scotland. p. 14

Oriskatach was the home of Gerrit Van Zandt. This elegant stone house was built about 1755, and is said to have housed soldiers during the French and Indian War. Gerrit is likely a descendant of Joseph Janse Van Zante (who may have come to New Netherland before 1664) and Seitje Marcelis Van Bommel. I was unable to determine the origin of the name Oriskatach. The private home, located on Onesquethaw Creek Road, is on the market. Google for interior photos.

All well and good, except for the interesting story of Tenuis Slingerland and his son-in-law Johannes Appel. In March of 1685, they purchased 300 acres from the Mohawk. This grant, known as the Onesquethaw Patent, was confirmed by Governor Dongan in May 1685. It was almost immediately disputed by the Van Rensselaers who also had their patent for the Manor of Rensselaerwyck confirmed by Dongan 1685. In 1719, Johannes Appel was able to confirm his family’s ownership of the land making the Onesquethaw tract separate from the surrounding Manor lands. These Colonial era stone houses were erected by builders who combined their knowledge of Dutch building techniques with local materials to create functional homes. They were part of thriving farms, established by Dutch families and oriented toward the Onesquethaw Creek. The Onesquethaw is a branch of the Coeymans Creek. It flows from Clarksville through New Scotland over to South Bethlehem where it merges with the Coeymans Creek on its way to the Hudson River. During the colonial era, it provided a trade route inland from the Hudson toward the Native Americans living in the Mohawk Valley, strategically bypassing Albany. The Onesqethaw Valley also offered prime agricultural lands. Onesquethaw is said to be an Indian name for corn fields and old records sometimes show it as Nisquthaw. Modern day Bethlehem has its share of old stone houses. The Winne houses near today’s Creble Road were all built prior to 1767. The one still standing near the intersection of 9W is the Peter Winne House. The original section was built circa 1725 of timber and

brick and has a fieldstone addition dating circa 1750. Hidden off a long drive opposite the greenhouses on Creble is another stone Winne house built circa 1750. Over on Van Dyke road is the Bratt-Oliver house which is pre-1767. River Road boasts the stone AlexanderKimmey House also known as the Halfway Tavern. The old Vanderzee home on Old Quarry Road might predate the time when the property was deeded to Gerret Hoogteling by Stephen Van Renselaer in 1790. It came into the Vanderzee family in the 1840s. Canterbury Vet Adopt a Shelter Dog Month October is Adopt a Shelter Dog Month and The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) suggests people who are looking for "man's best friend" to check out the millions of dogs at local shelters across the country. However, responsible pet ownership requires more than simply agreeing to take an animal into your life; the potential adopter should be ready to make a commitment that will enhance the lives of both the human and the animal. Shelter animals make good pets and proper training is the key. Owners that train their dogs have better relationships with their pets and fewer problems in the home. Most people don't realize that training is not as difficult as one would think. Training should be fun for both the pet owner and the dog and, in fact, usually strengthens the bond between them. According to The ASPCA, people bringing a companion animal into their lives need to thoroughly review their lifestyle and their readiness to take responsibility for the animal's care. The ASPCA advises people to consider the five questions below before they adopt a dog: 1. Am I ready to make a long-term commitment? Adopting a pet means being responsible for it's health and happiness for the rest of his or her life, which could be up to 15 or more years for dogs. 2. Is the animal right for my household? A strong, active pet may be too much for a young child or elderly person to handle. Small pets may be too delicate for rough play with children. 3. Who will be the primary caretaker for the animal? One adult in the home should be designated as the primary caretaker so that the pet's needs do not become lost in the shuffle of busy schedules. 4. Can I afford the animal? The cost of a pet is more than just the purchase price or adoption fee; remember to include the cost of food, pet supplies, veterinarian bills and training. 5. Am I ready to commit to making this dog a good canine citizen? Research shows that people who take the time to train their dogs are more likely to keep them longer than people who don't. FINANCIAL FOCU$ Put Lessons From “Retirement Week” to Work To raise public awareness about the importance of saving for retirement, Congress has designated the third week of October as National Save for Retirement Week. What lessons can you learn from this event? First of all, save early – and save often. Too many people put off saving for retirement until they are in their late 40s – and even their 50s. If you wait until you are in this age group, you can still do quite a bit to help build the resources you will need for retirement – but it will be more challenging than if you had begun saving and investing while you were in your 20s or early 30s. For one thing, if you delay saving for retirement, you may have to put away large sums of money each year to accumulate enough to support a comfortable retirement lifestyle. Plus, to achieve the growth you need, you might have to invest more aggressively than you’d like, which means taking on more risk. And even then, there are no guarantees of getting the returns you require. On the other hand, if you start saving and investing when you are still in the early stages of your career, you can make smaller monthly contributions to your retirement accounts. And by putting time on your side, you’ll be able to take advantage of compounding – the ability to earn money on your principal and your earnings. Here’s another lesson to be taken from National Save for Retirement Week: Maximize your opportunities to invest in the tax-advantaged retirement accounts available to you, such as an IRA and a 401(k) or similar

At a minimum, put in enough to earn your employer’s matching contribution, if one is offered. Apart from saving and investing early and contributing to your tax-advantaged retirement accounts, how else can you honor the spirit of National Save for Retirement Week? A key step you can take is to reduce the barriers to building your retirement savings. One such obstacle is debt. The larger your monthly debt payments, the less you will be able to invest each month. It’s not easy, of course, to keep your debt under control, but do the best you can. One other barrier to accumulating retirement resources is the occasional large expense resulting from a major car repair, sizable medical bills or other things of that nature. If you constantly have to dip into your longterm investments to meet these costs, you’ll slow your progress toward your retirement goals. To help prevent this from happening, try to build an emergency fund big enough to cover three to six months’ worth of living expenses. Since you’ll need instant access to this money, you’ll want to keep it in a liquid, low-risk account.

Spring is the time for renewal and rejuvenation! Wait, spring isn’t coming for another seven months? Okay then, let’s bring on the rejuvenation right now by announcing that the Bethlehem YMCA will soon cut the ribbon on a brand new wellness center.

The upstairs wellness area that includes the track, free weights, treadmills, bikes, studios etc.,is closed temporarily while it is gutted, painted, updated, reorganized and appointed with all kinds of new workout equipment. This will improve the aesthetics of the wellness center and increase the number of different exercises available. Our trainers will be able to teach members new workouts that will help them achieve their wellness goals. The new wellness center is closed in early October for renovations and will reopen on Tuesday, October 10th, . Enslaved people of African and Native American descent were used as the primary labor force in New York until gradual emancipation abolished the institution in 1827. Michael Lucas is the Curator of Historical Archaeology at the New York State Museum. In addition to his studies on slavery and its aftermath in the Hudson Valley, he also conducts comparative research on eighteenth century development of New York City and Albany using the historical archaeology collections at the museum.
