Trish Pix Tattered Pages Used Books

Greetings Fellow Readers, “I would never attempt to dissuade anyone from reading a book. But please, if you’re reading something that’s killing you, put it down and read something else, just as you would reach for the remote if you weren’t enjoying a TV program...All I know is that you can get very little from a book that is making you weep with the effort of reading it.” Author Nick Hornby (About a Boy, Fever Pitch, High Fidelity…) Autumnal Felicitations my dear Fellow Readers, I hope that I have found you in good health and enjoying these first days of Fall. Getting back to what I have always referred to as my “ordinary time” is often a challenge, but the colors, smells and joys of Fall make it one of my favorite seasons. My time in Maine was magical, peaceful, and energizing. My last swim in Sebec Lake was on September 6th. The cove was still without a sign of activity from anywhere. My husband was sitting on the end of the dock in a chair with Seamus in his lap, reading Bill Bryson’s, “The Life and Times of the Thunderbolt Kid” ( a witty memoir of his life growing up in the 50s & 60s…which I highly recommend to anyone who experienced similar) when from above we could hear the screech of a bald eagle. I turned onto my back just in time to see the eagle fly down low just over my head. What a sight, to see up through his feathers with the blue sky overhead. My husband later commented that perhaps the eagle saw my white head and thought that I was a fellow eagle stranded in the lake! Hah! Time at Sebec is also my haven for hiking, swimming, day trips, recalling the past, planning the near future and reading! I enjoyed these following titles: “The Book Thief”, “Allegiant”, “The Last Child”, “City of Ember”, “A Bad Day’s Work”, “An Abundance of Katherines”, “Grave Surprise”, and “The House at Riverton”; varied authors, many new to me, and all very enjoyable. My top 5 were: The Book Thief by Markus Zusak, a book which I read slowly, loving every word, every image is an inspiring tale set in Nazi Germany. This is a great book for discussion with friends! If you haven’t heard of John Green, more than likely you do not have a teen in your house; however, you may be aware of a recent book of his which was recently released as a movie (A Fault in our Stars). I have never been disappointed by his style, his story and the way he brings “youth” to life. An Abundance of Katherines is a delightful tale of anagram loving, washed up child prodigy Colin Singleton, who decides to re-evalutate his life after being “dumped” by his 19th Katherine! I had never read John Hart, and I have another of his novels now in my pile. The Last Child centers on the life of Johnny Merrimon, a twelve year old who is living with the tragedy of his twin sister gone missing. It is an intricate, powerful story of loss, hope, and courage in the face of evil. Allegiant by Veronica Roth is the last book in her dystopian trilogy. Amazon’s quote: What if your whole world was a lie? What if a single revelation— like a single choice—changed everything? What if love and loyalty made you do things you never expected? The explosive conclusion to Veronica Roth’s #1 New York Times bestselling Divergent trilogy reveals the secrets of the dystopian world that has captivated millions of readers in 4

Divergent and Insurgent. I actually liked the ending…but then I try to take a very realistic view with me to dystopia where good doesn’t always win and heroes often do heroic things that may not please the reader. I had never read anything by popular author, Kate Morton. I finished my lake reading in the same fashion as I started, with a book that slowed down my reading speed as it painted a picture of another time. In a very Downton Abbey sense, The House at Riverton weaves a mystery into the timeline of a “domestic maid” who recounts her life at Riverton as a movie is preparing to hit the big screen about the tragic past of the great estate. We travel the daydreams of 99 year old Grace as she relives her role at Riverton. Like a flower on the wallpaper, she is always silent in the background as life of the upper class unfolds. She also keeps her silence for almost 80 years. This is one of those books that takes you along on the journey as we shadow the events, times and people of Riverton! Here in the shop, we will be having a special on all books in our Horror section during the month of October. An additional 10% comes off at the counter when you purchase any of our paperbacks or hardcovers in our Horror section during October. Also, remember all teachers always get an additional 10% off purchases at Tattered Pages! Trish wants to thank all those who have a career in this most noble profession! (Trish worked in the educational field for over 25 years…and is always willing to help you find just the right books for your children.) I want to take this opportunity to thank all of my loyal readers/customers that help me to enjoy my life as bookshop owner. Your patronage of my small business (that contains 19,000 new & used books) helps me to stay viable. Remember, if you are having an upcoming fundraiser, I always participate with a donation of $250 worth of books for your raffle or auction! In reference to my opening quote, if you are reading a book that just isn’t great, put it down and “change the channel” to something more to your liking. Tattered Pages is your perfect place to pick up that next favorite book all at prices reduced 20-60% off the original prices! Until next month…Don’t waste your time reading anything except the exceptional! You deserve it!

O

ctober is National Pet Wellness Month and focuses on educating pet owners about the importance of wellness examinations and disease prevention. Just as you get annual check-ups, have your teeth cleaned every 6 months, and take your car in regularly for an oil change, your pet needs periodic check-ups too. Once-a-year exams are recommended for young, healthy pets. Older pets or those with health problems could benefit from a minimum of twice-a-year exams. Pets, in particular cats, are so good at hiding when they don’t feel well that often signs of illness are not noticeable until pets are in advanced stages of disease. Wellness exams can identify a problem early on, when it is much easier to treat. Your veterinarian may discover your pet has developed a heart murmur, is in the early stages of kidney disease, or has gum disease that could affect his other organs and overall health. These, and many other conditions, can all be managed better when diagnosed early. Early diagnosis and treatment is often less expensive and is more likely to add to your pet’s length and quality of life. When having your pet examined, make sure you notify your veterinarian of any changes in your pet’s appetite, behavior, urinary and bowel habits, exercise tolerance, weight loss or gain, or drinking habits. Discuss topics such as vaccinations, diet, parasite control, and home dental care with your veterinarian. You may be able to prevent problems before they ever start. Your veterinarian may also discuss weight management for your pet. 53% of adult dogs and 55% of adult cats are classified as overweight or obese. Preventing obesity is much easier to accomplish than treatment, so consult with your vet about the appropriate diet and exercise regimen for your pet.

Teeth and oral health are extremely important when caring for your pet and should be evaluated annually. Unchecked, dental disease can lead to kidney problems or nutritional issues if your pet cannot adequately chew and digest their food. HIGHLAND HOLLOW 1715 T ARRYTOWN R OAD . F EURA B USH . N EW Y ORK

518.424.3667 In a small stone house located in Feura Bush you will find tucked back in the woods Highland Hollow Farm. Here you will find Dave, Benaye, Oscar, and Olive Raylinsky and there animals, who are the first non Van Dyke kin to live in the home since 1780.

More animals, tractors, a cattle trailer, building their own processing facility, haying equipment, and of course a donkey named Jackson. They had put forth a great business plan and idea where they wanted to share with the public the incredible meats they raised.

Three years ago shortly after getting married Dave and Benaye purchased a home they could settle into and call theirs. 60 acres of neglected farmland was quickly transformed into a grass fed beef farm. Benaye was a hardworking businesswoman new to this idea, while Dave was fourth generation beef farmer and third generation butcher. Benaye was raised in Scotia, NY while Dave was born on a farm and began working on his family farm at 3 years old.

With all of the definitions, proclamations, and categories people are placing their products under it is very simple at Highland Hollow. The cows their entire lives eat and only eat ….wait for it…..GRASS. They do not use hormones, pesticides, herbicides, or antibiotics either. The Lambs eat Grass, the Turkeys eat grass and graze until the freeze, then grain is supplemented, the Pigs forage through the woods, eat veggies from the garden, apples from there trees, and are also supplemented with grain. There Gibson Farm in Columbia County specifically mixes non-gmo grain precisely for Highland Hollows specifications. Highland Hollow is also extremely rare where they are “farm to fork”. Just like the old days where is you wanted meat you went and saw the farmer. The beef is dry aged 21 days and everything is custom cut to your liking and cryovac packaged. There is no middleman and that is how they maintain such high quality with animals going from the farm, to the cooler, to you.

There was a combination of reasons Dave wanted to start farming again with the main reason being the poor quality food being sold at stores along with a list of additives these meats contained. The first choice they had to make starting the farm was what type of animals they wanted to raise and breeds. Benaye and Dave felt that it was very important to raise “Heritage Breed” animals. The easiest way to describe “Heritage” animals is they are the animals that our Grandparents and Great Grandparents use to eat. These animal are very hardy, foragers, and have a great longevity but are becoming a thing of the past with today commercial markets and the demand for “more, faster, and we need it now”. Most heritage breeds take longer to mature and at Highland Hollow they are willing to take the extra time and the put in the work to bring you the highest quality products out there. For the cattle they choose Scottish Highland and Herefords. Herefords because it is the cows Dave grew up with and Highlands because of there vigor, look, and the fact that most people have never seen them. As for the rest of the line up Tamworth and Old Spot pigs, Katahdin and Jacob sheep, Aracaua and Ameracuna Chickens for green and blue eggs, and Bronze Turkeys for Thanksgiving and Christmas. After numerous days of mending the soils, reseeding pastures, stringing fence, and building the barns the farm began to grow.

As for today the farm has grown into three separate small farms, 400 acres of hay fields, 50 plus head of cattle, 15 sheep, 30 egg layers, 125 turkeys, 18 pigs, and a closed breeding program. The farm is also supplying over 15 families with fresh food from New York City to Saratoga. Meat is available in large portions to keep the price down beef (whole, half, and quarter), pig (whole and half); lamb (whole and half) arrangements can also be made between families to split larger portions. Sometimes two different families will split a fore and hindquarter to have a variety of meat from the animal. The most difficult decision is the quantity and storage of it. A quick note; a quarter of beef is two milk crates packaged, which can easily fit in a normal freezer with a lot of room to spare. Most families of four eat a half of beef from Highland Hollow a year. Rt 32 | 6.5 miles from the Bethlehem Town Park Right onto Tarrytown Road

Then

& Now South Bethlehem United Methodist Church By Susan E. Leath : In 1886, a bell made by the Meneely Bell Company of West Troy, NY was installed in the belfry. The church boasted electric lights in 1905. This photo is from about 1900. (Photo courtesy of the Bethlehem Historical Association.)

stands for Methodist Episcopal. Methodism is the movement started by John and Charles Wesley. In 1729 while at Oxford University they formed the Holy Club where members pledged to be disciplined about their spiritual lives and to perform social service. Outsiders called them “Methodists” because of their systematic approach to their religion. The Wesleys adopted the term as a badge of honor and used it for the wider spiritual movement they sparked after their transformative religious experiences of 1738. The Episcopal part of the name stems from the organizational structure of the church in which they are governed by bishops.

This is how the hamlet of South Bethlehem was described in 1886 in Howell and Tenney’s Bicentennial History of Albany County. Everything needed to sustain the surrounding farms was there. The description omits the railroad station, important transportation for crops and people, and the post office. Today, the only thing left on that list is the Through the 1700s, Methodism continued to spread M.E. constructed in 1832, near Beckers Corners (near today’s Route 9W and Route 396/Bridge Street.) It was dedicated on November 20 having been built on lands of Betts Chatterton. Bradley H. Glick and John C. Green were the first preachers. In 1845 the congregation determined to move to South Bethlehem and dismantled the church at Beckers Corners. Some of those timbers were used in the construction of the new church on land donated by Conrad Baumes. It was dedicated in February 1845 as the First Methodist Episcopal Church of Bethlehem. The pastors were Rueben Bloomer and Jason Wells. In 1886 Pastor John Buskins reported 56 families, 115 members, 97 Sabbath-school pupils and 11 teachers. Today, the church continues to live its mission “to walk in God’s love and to give it away.” As Pastor Mark Ledbetter said during a recent Sunday service, “South Bethlehem United Methodist Church has a strong past and an incredible future.”

Susan E. Leath presently serves as Bethlehem’s Town Historian. She is the author of Bethlehem an illustrative history of our town with over 200 images dating from the 1880s to 1960. The book is ne. available at local booksellers and online. Visit her blog at: BethlehemNYHistory.blogspot.com. Susan welcomes your suggestions forr future Then and Now articles. Message from the Supervisor Last month I presented the tentative budget for the Town of Bethlehem, which details spending and revenues for 2015. It’s a $40 million plan that covers all town services, including highway, police, planning, building, water, sewer, parks and recreation, seniors and many more. Spending is well controlled in the budget, rising by less than ½ of one percent, and Bethlehem is below the property tax cap for the 4th year in a row. This year, in addition to dealing with rising costs, we saw a steep fall off in mortgage recording taxes. We get a share of this state tax, which depends on how many new mortgages and refinances occur for Bethlehem properties. This revenue source, over which we have no control, fell precipitously this year, and is projected to decline by 17% or -$225,000 in 2015. It would have been a far easier year without that decline, but because the town is in very good financial condition, we were able to adjust and still meet our service commitments without a spike in local taxes or fees. That’s good news, and a testament to the Town’s conservative budgeting and consistently improving financial practices. For a majority of homeowners, it will be a good year, with lower property taxes. For example, many have already found that they are paying lower school tax bills this year. This is occurring for a substantial majority of homeowners because the town wide reassessment is reducing the share of taxes paid by the residential sector. In the case of 2015 town taxes, most homeowners will see a decrease in their property taxes of 4% or more, because their assessed value either remained unchanged or went down. Even those with modest increases may see declines, or increases smaller than they would have had without the reassessment. While overall the town property tax levy will increase in 2015, the tax rate will decrease by about 4 percent (rates go down because total taxable value went up). That means that even if your assessment went up by 4% (the average for single family homes), you’ll likely have no change in your bill. Tax bills depend on home value, exemptions, and the districts your property is in (water, sewer, fire), and these are rough figures. Bear in mind that the reason the Town reassessed was to ensure fair assessments at market value for all types of property, and to protect against court challenges. However, the results of the reassessment showed that homeowners overall had been paying too much in property taxes, and this year the correction in that 26

inequity will result in most actually seeing lower taxes. Of course, some individual homeowners, and many commercial properties went up by more. Overall value went up by 7.5% with the residential sector going up less and other sectors going up more. As was the case in 2014, town employees will be receiving a 2% cost of living adjustment (or COLA) for 2015, which is well deserved. Over the last 10 years, the COLAs going to town employees have been below inflation (as measured by CPI). Over the last five years, inflation averaged 2.0% whereas the COLAs for general employees averaged 0.8% and for police 1.3%. Providing a 2% COLA in 2015 will result in a 1.0% average over six years, still roughly half of inflation for the period. Town staffing has been reduced from a high of 241 in 2008 to 216 in the 2015 budget, a reduction of 25 staff, or 10.3%. Town employees have risen to the challenge of doing more with less, and it is our responsibility to compensate them fairly. We were able to make up for the decline in mortgage recording taxes through a variety of reductions in various areas, including reduced staffing for tax receiving and building inspections. The workload in these and other areas will be kept up through flexible staffing and the use of new technology that improves productivity. Strictly speaking, the budget only covers one year, but it is based on a multiyear projection that includes a comprehensive capital plan. In this way, we ensure that the Town will be able to afford necessary infrastructure repairs and replacements. Using portions of the $776,000 in efficiency and performance award money received last year from New York State we are also moving forward with some important improvements, including the Feura Bush Road and Herrick Avenue sidewalks, and seed money for the new traffic calming, open space and parks master planning initiatives. The majority of this year’s allocation from the award money ($216,000) will go for efficiency investments, including systems, software and improved technology to enhance results and help town employees accomplish their tasks effectively within leaner staffing levels. The town budget goes through an intensive review period, including workshops, hearings, and lots of other opportunities for public input. If you want to follow this process more closely, all of the information, materials and schedules will be available on the town website. The Board and I want your input, so please don’t hesitate to reach out. John Clarkson,

Town Supervisor

IS THE SPRING THE BEST TIME TO SELL YOUR HOME? Bethlehem, NY – Every fall, home sellers face the dilemma of listing in the fall or waiting until spring. After all, everyone knows that spring is the best time to sell a home, right? The belief that selling a home in the spring is the best choice is common even among real estate professionals. Is this a myth or are there actually facts supporting the common belief that it is better to wait until spring? A study conducted by Redfin between 2011 and 2013 looked at 1.1 million home listings in 19 markets. The study found that homes listed in the fall had a 9% greater chance of selling within 180 days than those listed in the spring. In some markets, such as Boston, the percentage was as high as 14% greater probability of selling within 180 days in the fall, than in the spring market. Real estate is local so the real question is what is true for the Capital Region? A review of local Capital Region data backs the Redfin study. In the Capital Region, 362 more homes were sold in the fall of 2013 than were sold in the spring of 2014. Sellers who waited until the spring of 2014 listed in a market that had a lower likelihood of selling. This is contrary to what is commonly believed by real estate professional and home sellers. In addition to historic data that supports listing in the fall over the spring market, the National Association of Realtors just put out a report for the Capital Region. Based on the performance metrics they track, they predict the fourth quarter of 2014 will be the most active for our housing market. So is Spring the best time to sell a home? The answer is that it depends on your personal situation. Trying to time the real estate market is no different than trying to time the stock market. It is difficult and studies show very few can do it effectively. However, the common myth that the spring is the best time to sell a home is clearly not based on facts or sales data. The spring market is a good time to sell a home but so is the fall. There are a myriad of other factors that are part of the decision of when to sell a home rather than just timing the market. Selling a home is a process, not an event, and a real estate professional can help with the decisions on selling a home to maximize your return, sell in the shortest period possible, and sell with the least inconvenience to you. Listing at the wrong time is just one mistake that could cost you thousands in the sale of your home. Our free report, just released, provides the 7 most costly mistakes sellers make when selling their homes and is yours free of charge. Just call us at 1-800-448-7016 ext 9951 and leave us both your mailing address, and your email address, and we will get you the report in the mail. Trick -orTreating Tips: Carry a flashlight with fresh batteries after dark. Take along money for a phone call. Wear identification that’s easy to read. Always trick or treat in groups, accompanied by an adult. Follow a curfew and take a watch with a backlight. Plan your route ahead of time. Stay on the sidewalks and out of the streets. Cross only at intersections and designated crosswalks. • Walk. No running. • Don’t trample through flower beds and gardens. • Watch out for open flames in jack-o-Lanterns. • Trick or treat in familiar neighborhoods. • Walk with your head up and be aware of your surroundings. • Only visit well lit houses. Don’t stop at dark houses.

Don’t enter any houses unless you know the people. Carry a spare Halloween bag—in case yours breaks or you fill your original one. Don’t approach unfamiliar pets and animals. Don’t cut across yards and stay out of back yards. Follow traffic signals and don’t jaywalk. Always watch for cars backing up or turning. Review the “stop, drop and roll” procedure in case your costume catches on fire. Never accept rides from strangers. Respect other people and their property. Be polite and say “thank you.” Don’t eat any candy until it’s inspected for tampering under bright lights. Avoid candy that has loose wrappings, is unwrapped, has puncture holes, or is homemade. Small children should not be allowed hard candy they may choke on. Report suspicious or criminal activity to an adult or police. Consider having a party instead of Trick or Treating.

CAR CARE TIPS 23 Oakwood Road

Off Kenwood Ave.

439-1446 ’s

The “four B ” of fall car care:

Since 1967 we have been providing Bethlehem with the freshest Cut Choice & Prime Meats in the area

Blades, Batteries, Brakes & Belts

Sure it’s not winter yet, but car-care experts advise consumers should use these final fair-weather days to get cars ready for what lies ahead. We suggest attention also be paid to tires, shocks and struts, oil, fluid levels, air filters and headlamps and tail lamps. Regular maintenance is the best preventative for winter breakdowns, but here’s a closer look at the areas experts call out for extra attention: •BLADES – If you’ve ever tried to scrape frost from your windshield by dousing it with washer fluid and running the wipers excessively, you know worn wipers can’t clear your view. Driving through a snowstorm with frosty buildup eroding your visibility is a horrible feeling. Avoid it by replacing your wiper blades before the weather becomes nasty. •BATTERY – Mopar advises the extreme heat of the summer months can reduce battery life, resulting in batteries that then fail in high-demand winter months. AC Delco tells consumers to watch for corrosion on cables and posts and seek help from a professional if these contact points require cleaning. •BRAKES – Before winter has you sliding your way through intersections, have your brakes checked and replace the pads as needed.

Try Vince’s Famous Homemade Pesto & Spaghetti Sauce Italian Sausage & Giant Meatballs Homemade Soups & Pasta Fagioli Extra Lean Bratwurst Maple Breakfast Sausage Homemade Baked Beans Macaroni & Potato Salad Thick Sliced Bacon

ORDER FOR THANKSGIVING TODAY! • Fresh Jaindl Turkeys • Hatfield Hams

•BELTS and hoses – These will leave you stranded if they snap or leak. Look for thinning or cracking in belts and check all hoses for imperfections, too.

• Prime Ribs

•Tires – Changing temperatures can alter tire pressure. Make sure all tires are filled to their recommended tire pressure. Also check for tread wear.

• Prime Top Butts

•Shocks and Struts – Mopar says shocks and struts are the most overlooked parts on a car but argue that this should not be the case. Shocks and struts do improve vehicle handling, extend tire life and improve ride control a for the driver. •Oil and other fluids – Top off all fluids that have run low. Windshield washer fluid is used frequently in winter driving, so keep a gallon in your trunk to ensure you will always have a clear view of the road. Check the oil, and change it if the time is right. •Air filters – Mopar includes these on their fall inspection list. A dirty air filter is not generally going to cause your car to break down, but have it inspected too. •Headlamps and tail lamps – So you’ve completed a complete prewinter inspection of your car, but the guy behind you probably didn’t. Check your lights to make sure you are as visible as possible to other drivers. This may seem like a lot, but many items on this list can be handled quickly and easily. Once your car is prepared, you will be a more confident driver. Too bad there isn’t a list on how to prepare ourselves for winter’s wretched wickedness.

What's Smarter -- Paying Off Debts or Investing? It probably doesn’t happen as much as you’d like, but from time to time, you have some extra disposable income. When this happens, how should you use the funds? Assuming you have adequate emergency savings — typically, three to six months’ worth of living expenses — should you pay off debts, or fund your IRA or another investment account? There’s no one “correct” answer — and the priority of these options may change, depending on your financial goals. However, your first step may be to consider what type of debt you’re thinking of paying down with your extra money. For example, if you have a consumer loan that charges a high rate of interest — and you can’t deduct the interest payments from your taxes — you might conclude that it’s a good idea to get rid of this loan as quickly as possible. Still, if the loan is relatively small, and the payments aren’t really impinging on your monthly cash flow that much, you might want to consider putting any extra money you have into an investment that has the potential to offer longer-term benefits. For instance, you might decide to fully fund your IRA for the year before tackling minor debts. (In 2014, you can contribute up to $5,500 to a traditional or Roth IRA, or $6,500 if you’re 50 or older.) When it comes to making extra mortgage payments, however, the picture is more complicated. In the first place, mortgage interest is typically tax deductible, which makes your loan less “expensive.” Even beyond the issue of deductibility, you may instinctively feel that it’s best to whittle away your mortgage and build as much equity as possible in your home. But is that always a smart move? 3 38

Increasing your home equity is a goal of many homeowners — after all, the more equity you have in your home, the more cash you’ll get when you sell it. Yet, if your home’s value rises — which, admittedly, doesn’t always happen — you will still, in effect, be building equity without having to divert funds that could be placed elsewhere, such as in an investment. In this situation, it’s important to weigh your options. Do you want to lower your mortgage debts and possibly save on cumulative interest expenses? Or would you be better served to invest that money for potential growth or interest payments? Here’s an additional consideration: If you tied up most of your money in home equity, you may well lose some flexibility and liquidity. If you were to fall ill or lose your job, could you get money out of your home if your emergency savings fund fell short? Possibly, in the form of a home equity line of credit or a second mortgage, but if you were not bringing in any income, a bank might not even approve such a loan — no matter how much equity you have in your house. You may more easily be able to sell stocks, bonds or other investment vehicles to gain access to needed cash. Getting some extra money once in a while is a nice problem to have. Still, you won’t want to waste the opportunity — so, when choosing to pay down debts or put the money into investments, think carefully.

ASK

THE

Paul Pagnotta, Pharmacist, Co-Owner, Four Corners Pharmacy, Delmar

OCTOBER IS AMERICAN PHARMACISTS MONTH

their benefit and for any problems. Some pharmacists offer a specific service called Medication Therapy Management or a Medication Review. During the session you can sit down with your pharmacist to review all your medications, ask questions and learn new information. Together, you and your pharmacist can create a PMR to review with your physicians along with any potential problems that are detected during this review.

Do you know your pharmacist’s name?

You should. A national patient survey conducted by the American Pharmacists Association revealed that respondents who knew their pharmacist’s name had better medication use habits. These patients were more likely to tell their pharmacist other medications they were using, read product labels, know the main ingredients of their prescription medications and use their pharmacist as a source of information on medicines.

Do you know your medications?

Give yourself a little quiz and test your medication knowledge. For each medication you take (including non prescription and dietary supplements) can you identify four important things: the name of the medication, the dose or strength, directions for how you use it and the reason you take each medication? If you knew all four things for each medication, give yourself an A+. If you did not, keeping a personal medication record can help.

How can I keep an accurate and up to date list of all my medications? A personal medication record (PMR) can help you keep track of all your medications. The PMR should include the name, strength/dose, directions and reason you take each medication. Remember to list prescription and nonprescription medications including any herbal or dietary supplements you take. If you need help making a PMR, a sample is available from the Institute for Safe Medication Practices at http://www.ismp.org/newsletters/consumer/ alerts/ismp_med_form_pdf.pdf). Share your medication record with your pharmacist, physicians and the other members of your health care team.

Why should I tell my pharmacist each medication I am taking, including non-prescription and herbal medications? Not all medications mix well together. For example, some can interact changing how the medication works in your body. Others can cause added adverse effects when combined. Including when non-prescription and herbal products are mixed with each other or with prescription medications. If you have multiple doctors and/or multiple pharmacies, keeping a PMR is especially important to make sure there are no interactions or duplications. Although some herbal or dietary supplements have been shown to help manage some conditions, they are not regulated by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). That means that clinical trials or studies are not required to determine if they work to manage your symptoms. It is also not always known if they have interactions with other medications or what adverse effects they might cause. Let your health care team know you are taking them, so they can monitor for

40

When I get a new medication from my doctor and pharmacist, what do I need to know?

Being an educated patient is the best way to ensure safe medication use. New York State requires that your pharmacist counsel you on all new prescription medications. Even a mail order pharmacy should attempt to call you to provide this important information. When talking with your doctor and pharmacist, use the following questions to learn as much about your medication as possible: ◊ What is the medication’s name and strength? ◊ What is the medicine used for and what should it do? ◊ How do I take this medication? (example: number of times per day, with orwithout food) ◊ How long before I see the effects of this medication? ◊ How long do I need to take this medication? ◊ Are there foods, alcoholic drinks, other medicines (including over-the-counter medications, natural or dietary supplements) or activities I should avoid when taking this medication? ◊ What are the possible side effects of the medicine and what should I do if they occur? ◊ What do I do if I miss a dose? ◊ How should this medication be stored? For more information talk with your pharmacist and visit the following websites for more information about pharmacists and your medications: American Pharmacists Association (www.aphanet.org), FDA (www.FDA. gov), Medline PLUS (http://medlineplus.gov/) and AHRQ (http://www. ahrq.gov/consumer/).

Give it a Spin! Have you been thinking about going to your first Spin class but are a little intimidated by the bikes, the set-up, and all the positions? Totally normal! Spinning is a great way to torch major calories regardless of your fitness level!

What is it? Spinning is the generic name given to the fitness program of Indoor Cycling. Classes are generally 45 minute to an hour, medium to high intensity classes delivered by a qualified instructor where participants are lead through the various components of an indoor cycling class. These components are the warm-up, main workout which consists of hills and flats, cool-down and finally stretching, all done with music. A participant will experience a number of profiles which may be found in outdoor cycling such as hills, flats and even downhills. There are three variables used on the indoor cycle to create the various profiles found outdoors - these three variables are: • Body Positioning (sitting or standing), • Cadence ( leg speed or revolutions per minute RPM) and • Resistance (scale of 1-10 known as Rate of Perceived Effort RPE). RPE is considered by the American College of Sports Medicine [ACSM] as the acceptable measurement of intensity while doing exercise. 10 on the scale is maximum effort whereas 1 is little or no effort. On the bike there is a dial participants turn to the right for more resistance and turn to the left for less resistance. The many different combinations of theses three variables create the terrain or profiles found in outdoor cycling. Workouts include a variety of interval type time sets where short bursts of 10-90 seconds of hard work are used as well as timed sets such as 3-5 minute mini time trials.

What should you wear? General fitness gear can be used but it is always a good idea to invest in a pair of proper cycling shorts to assist in being comfortable in the saddle. Standard fitness tops or t-shirts can be worn although it does help to have a top which assists in keeping you cool. But a sweat towel and filled water bottle is essential when participating in an indoor cycling class. Cycling shoes are also a great investment as your foot is placed in the best position on the pedal both for indoor and outdoor cycling otherwise sneakers are totally acceptable.

Indoor cycles are a 'one size fits all', but there is a generic set-up to assist you in obtaining a proper bike fit. The seat, height, and handlebars are all adjustable. Your instructor will help you achieve the most safe and effective position on the bike. Hope to see you in the saddle!

People from all over the Bethlehem area come to the YMCA to participate in a wide range of programs that are targeted to help them become stronger and healthier. We have Livestrong for cancer survivors, the Diabetes Prevention Program, and Pedaling for Parkinson’s to name just a few. We have the Achiever’s Program to improve skills and academic standards for young people and ICan to build fitness and life skills for high school students.

You may have joined the Y as a place to get healthier, help your kids learn and grow or make new friends. Now, your membership can mean even more. Togetherhood service projects are designed to make a meaningful impact while being rewarding, convenient and fun. Please join us. Member, Bethlehem YMCA Board of Advisors Baycolumns.blogspot.com

All of these programs, and many more, happen inside the walls of the Bethlehem YMCA. It’s a place where good things happen for good people. But the YMCA’s mission goes well beyond our walls.

Mark Hansen 518-439-4394

As we work to bring about healthy changes for our members, we are also working to bring about meaningful and enduring change in our community. We believe the power of community ownership in the Y, and work to ensure strong community relationships. YMCA volunteer board members and Y staff have always been the backbone of our efforts, and now we are beginning a new program that will provide all of our members with fun, convenient and rewarding ways to give back and support their neighbors. It’s called “Togetherhood.” Togetherhood is a YMCA community service program. YMCA members lead and participate in volunteer service projects that benefit Bethlehem. It is a simple, fun and rewarding way for members to identify ways they can give back and support their neighbors through their own ideas, skills and energy. We will do this by participating in four volunteer projects over the course of a year. These projects will be one-day events where our Y members can volunteer and give back to organizations that need our help. If you want to help our Togetherhood program right away, you can show your support for “Tinker Kids: A STEM Learning Project.” The purpose of the tinkering project is to work with at-risk children in Albany to increase their access to high quality science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) learning experiences. It is a key component of the YMCA Togetherhood program. This new community initiative is entered in the Fresh Page Project Contest, a digital media effort that judges ideas for improving local communities. If this idea receives enough votes, the YMCA would win financial support to make the Tinker Kids project a reality. Please consider voting for the program at the following link: http://mfpp.ymca.net/project/tinker-kids-a-stem-learningproject

Togetherhood is a pilot program that began last year with eight YMCA branches and has now expanded to 125 across the United States, including Bethlehem. And It’s not just for YMCA members, it’s for anyone in the community that would like to help out. Our first Togetherhood project benefits Bethlehem senior citizens. On October 4th at 10 a.m. at the Bethlehem Town Hall, we are cleaning vehicles used by Bethlehem Seniors Services. Bethlehem Senior Services and Bethlehem Senior Projects work together to provide transportation to medical, dental, and therapy appointments, the grocery store, as well as a variety of prescheduled social and recreational programs. Future Togetherhood projects will help provide new parents with resources, gear and supplies such as strollers, clothing, and diapers and cleaning up local hiking trails. There will be more information about each of these events as they near. 52
