Walking Tours of Historic Cemeteries:
Come explore two of Bethlehem’s historic cemeteries with town historian Susan Leath. Learn fascinating family stories and their connection to Bethlehem history while walking in these quiet, green spaces. June 9, 10 AM: Bethlehem Cemetery was established in 1865, yet the folks buried here, like Revolutionary War veteran Christian Bender and his wife Elizabeth Cramer, touch history back to the 1700s. Nathaniel and Rhogenia Adams, early residents of the Delaware Turnpike, are also here. Many other family stories will be explored including Blanchard, Haswell, Slingerland and Van Allen. June 30, 10 AM: Elmwood Cemetery, also known as Bethlehem Rural Cemetery, was established in 1860 on land transferred from the First Reformed Church. Noted families include Becker, Lasher, Myers, Selkirk, and Schoonmaker. One family story sure to be highlighted is that of Garrett Niver who lost his life at the Battle of Little Big Horn. Walks are free but please pre-register with the Town of Bethlehem Parks and Recreation Department, townofbethlehem. org. Contact Susan Leath, sleath@townofbethlehem.org, with questions.
History Paddle
Join Town Historian Susan Leath for a guided kayak paddle along the Hudson River and Vlomankill. Learn about Bethlehem’s historic river connections from the unique perspective of actually being on the water. Experience the historic Nicoll-Sill House, Winne’s dock, Parda Hook and, if the creek is passable, the waterfall on the Vlomankill. Thursday evening June 28. Please arrive in time to unload and be on the water by 6:00 PM at the Henry Hudson Park kayak launch. Dear Constant Reader, I hope that this finds you all enjoying the beautiful weather, sun shiny days, and gentle breezes that came to us in May! So much has happened in my life since I last wrote to you! My husband took me on the most incredible Mother’s Day weekend, where we travelled to my favorite spot in the world, Sebec Lake, Maine! I closed the shop from mid-Friday and re-opened the next Tuesday. I have never done this before…but with my husband retired, I promised that Seamus & I would be more accessible and willing to travel from time to time. The opportunity presented itself that we travel the 450 miles to my sisterin-law’s lake house in Dover-Foxcroft, Maine, to open the camp for the season. What a treat! We stopped on the way at our son, Ryan’s home in the village of Pemacook, NH on the Contoocook River. His old farmhouse basically has this lazy river just behind his backyard. At 6am I saw a man canoeing silently on the sparkling river! What a great, though short visit, where I did 2 huge jigsaw puzzles (Trolls & SnowWhite) on my granddaughter Raven’s bedroom floor. I then read 2 books to her before bedtime, where Seamus & I cuddled with her on her unicorn sheets! We had a great lunch in Portland, Maine on the waterfront at Becky’s Diner on Commercial Street! (Recommended by Rachael Ray over 10 years ago…and I ordered the Haddock sandwich and it was delectable…and the meal was cheaper than at a fast food restaurant!) My husband savored the fiddlehead omelette...what a treat! After cleaning camp, luckily I had the inside, I stepped outside into the sunshine with Seamus, a glass of ice tea, my sunscreen/glasses and one of the best books I have ever read, “The One in a Million Boy” by Monica Wood. I have questioned if it is my venue that makes some of my favorite books seem so magical? Every now and then a novel comes along that grips you from the beginning, drawing you in. The traits of each character are so beautifully painted and woven into a tapestry of a story line that is so endearing, so human that you don’t want to set the book aside. The story line encompasses characters of all ages and experiences! It is a tale of a unique, if not unusual young boy scout who offers service to a 104 year old woman who has lived quite a life and his separated parents who can’t coordinate their lives! It demonstrates the love and bond of family, the treasures and pain of the past, and examining human nature at its best and worst. It was one of those books that I even dreamt about, assigning each character a recognizable character actor in the roles! I am so glad that I read this customer recommendation. I shall search out other books by Monica Wood. On Mother’s Day it was 85 degrees, and I even ventured into the lake, yes, the same lake that officially declared ice out on May 4th! I didn’t swim, but stood in the water breathing it all in. The loons landed on the lake late that night and their lonesome song echoed into the cove. I had a great quick read that day with a Consumer Report’s “Should I Eat This?” coordinated with reading Don Colbert, MD’s book on ultimate eating well, feeling great and living p. 6
longer called (be ready for one of the most unique titles ever!) “What Would Jesus Eat?”! Dr. Colbert takes us on a gastronomical tour of the Bible and the rules set forth in Leviticus and Deuteronomy on clean eating. I loved the historical/biblical connection to when, how, why we as evolving humans came to eat what we eat today. The simplicity of the clean diet that many search for today is addressed with clearly defined why’s of the Bible and eating Kosher, non-Kosher! So much makes sense, and truly gave me pause to think. This book presents the material in very easy to read chapters and could be looked at as an “owner’s manual” for the human body with divine inspiration and intervention. I found it very thought provoking. In my own defense, I think that Jesus would have loved a hot fudge sundae or deep, dark, double fudge brownies, mousse or cake! My good friend, Tonia, sent to me a very disturbing video clip from one of my favorite TV shows, Jimmy Kimmel Live. Often his bits, though funny, also make you think. This bit was the man on the street asking people to just name a book. Just name a book, not describe it, review it or anything complicated, just name a book! As each one floundered, I became more upset to think that a person couldn’t name a book! It could have been a child’s book… anything! Very few even attempted. One man said that he read a book by Moby Dick and it was called Horse! Then one lady gave Dr. Seuss’ name…that is the author, not a book…but then several repeated that. Okay, I understand that at one time in our life we may be in the world of board & picture books…but you could have at least given a title! I tried to reconcile my disappointment with these people, and they varied in age, to that they are from California where maybe everything is digital, TV and movie related… but not even to say “dictionary” or “cookbook”…nothing came to them! Yikes! Like many, my summer brings a bit of a change, namely, a change in my shop hours. Due to the popularity of restaurants here in the plaza, parking is often at a minimum on Fridays. This has caused me to contemplate my hours and time spent here with little foot traffic on certain days. So…the new summer hours starting on May 31st are as follows: M: 10-3, T: 10-5, Wed. 10-5, Thurs. 10-6, Fri. 106, Sat. 10-2, closed Sundays. I will post my vacation hours on Facebook: Tattered Pages, LLC, my website: www. tatteredpages365.webs.com and my phone #518-4479910. I thank you for your patronage and for spreading the word about Tattered Pages which has been in the Glenmont Center Square since June 2007! Celebrating 11 years!!! A Tale of Two Van Der Heyden Houses By Susan E. Leath
Are you one of those people who likes old cemeteries? I am. To me, cemeteries are a direct connection to the everyday people who make local history. I enjoy walking along the rows of stones and wondering about the family names. Who were these people? What are their stories? What was life like for them?
Cover Photo:
Archaeologist Dan Mazeau works at the Slingerland Family Burial Vault.
Today in Bethlehem, cemeteries fall into two categories. First are the family burial plots. Bethlehem has over 30 documented family plots, the majority of which are on private property. They are found all over town wherever the old farms were. Many are difficult to find in the over growth. In Bethlehem, in the early 1800s, besides burial at a family plot, folks were often interred in the cemetery grounds right next to their church. Today, this can still be seen at the New Scotland Presbyterian Church (established in 1787). At one time, Delmar Reformed Church (established in 1841) and the First Reformed Church of Bethlehem (established 1763) both had surrounding graves. As these became full, the second category of cemeteries were established, those that are incorporated.
Town Historian Susan Leath with Adelia Holliday Dexter’s headstone at Bethlehem Cemetery. p. 14
Many of Bethlehem’s ten incorporated cemeteries also have ties to the rural cemetery movement of the early to mid-1800s. The rural cemetery movement was a response to increased population and overcrowding. The open spaces of the countryside provided room for many burials as well as a green space for folks to enjoy nature away from the hectic cities. One writer notes that these beautifully designed and planted rural cemeteries provided “sanctuary, solitude, quiet adornment and beauty.” Another, in regards to Forrest Hills Cemetery in Madison WI, writes that families on their Sunday picnics would take long walks in the peaceful setting “thinking about the past and the future, and keeping a little bit of history alive for themselves.” Albany Rural Cemetery, established in 1844, is a perfect local example. Bethlehem Cemetery, incorporated in 1865 and located at the corner of Kenwood and Elsmere Avenues in Delmar, was established in part to receive burials from Delmar Reformed Church. Many of the founders, including the Reverend J. Lansing Pearce, were members of the church. Eventually, all of the graves near the church building were removed to Bethlehem Cemetery. In the month of June, a visit to Bethlehem Cemetery is like entering a green oasis in the midst of bustling Delmar. A prominent stone near the garden shed memorializes Adelia M. Holliday, wife of John Henry Dexter, who died in 1891. Holliday is not what I think of as a prominent Bethlehem name. But her story is so interesting! Through census records, I found that Adelia and John had six children, Maretta, George, Lewis, Henry, Emma and Maley. By 1880
Caspar Tropp’s stone at Elmwood Cemetery is extremely weathered and hard to read.
Bethlehem Parks and Recreation Department. Feel free to email me for more details, sleath@townofbethlehem.org. These walks will be repeated in the fall. An essay about Bethlehem cemeteries would not be complete with out a report on the Slingerland Family Burial Vault project. A local archaeologist just finished an investigation of the interior of the vault where debris has accumulated over the years. The doorway is now sealed up as we continue with our fundraising. Please visit our website, https://sites.google.com/view/slingerlandvault for details and to donate. You can also find the Friends of the Slingerland Family Burial Vault on Facebook.
The Van Derzee family lot on South Albany Road is badly over grown. Cornelius VanDerzee’s headstone is seen here in March 2016. He died in 1846 at age 60. Nearby is the stone for his wife Maria Van Bergen who died in 1822 at age 31.
they were living on Spring Street in Albany where John was a teamster. In that same year Adelia voted in the local races for alderman in the City of Albany. Keep in mind that New York State did not pass woman suffrage until 1917! An article headlined “Women Voters” (published in the Albany Evening Journal on April 14, 1880) includes a list of first time woman voters “whose names will accordingly be handed down to posterity.” Adelia Dexter of Spring Street is listed. The article also noted that “In the seventeenth ward inspectors very ungallantly refused to accept the ladies’ votes, although three of them were registered.” In a nearby column is this note “The Albany County Woman Suffrage Society will hold its sixth meeting at Tweedle Hall at 7:30 to-night, to celebrate the first vote of women in Albany. Admission free.” How is that for a local connection to a national movement? Elmwood Cemetery, also known as Bethlehem Rural Cemetery, is closely associated with the First Reformed Church of Bethlehem. It is located on Route 9W just north of the church near the Jericho Drive In. Another lovely spot, Elmwood was established in 1860 by members of the church and those buried near the church building were moved to the new, larger space. One head stone that caught my eye at Elmwood was Caspar Tropp’s. He died in 1867 at age 56. Again, not a familiar Bethlehem name. When investigating the Tropp family, I found very little about Caspar or any Bethlehem area Tropps. However, when I searched the name Tropp in the online newspapers, an amazing amount of badly behaving Tropps turned up. The most scandalous was Joe Tropp a notorious fence for the Whittemore gang of jewel thieves, who was murdered in 1933. As the Albany Times Union put it “Joseph Tropp, Slippery, Deceitful Fence …paid for his life for his scoundrelly activities.” I like to believe our Bethlehem Tropp’s were of the law-abiding sort. I did find the 1943 obituary of Carrie Tropp Bridgeford, daughter of Caspar, who led a peaceable life in Slingerlands. If these stories like these intrigue you, join me on one of my new cemetery tours. The first is at Bethlehem Cemetery on Saturday June 9 at 10 am. The second is at Elmwood on June 30, 10 am. You can register through the Town of
Fund raising continues for the preservation of the Slingerland Family Burial Vault. Located in the hamlet of Slingerlands, this small cemetery memorializes a family that had large impact on the history and development of our town. Visit https://sites.google.com/view/slingerlandvault We are also on Facebook and have a GoFundMe account. Search for the Friends of the Slingerlands Family Burial Vault. Thank you! Susan E. Ask the
Canterbury Vet How to Get the Most Out of Your Veterinary Visit We all want our pets to be healthy and get the best medical care possible. There are many things you can do to help ensure your pet gets the most out of her veterinary visit. Plan ahead! If there are specific things you want your vet to know or questions you want to ask, write them down and bring your list to your appointment. Better yet, drop it off or email it to the vet in advance. This is particularly important for first-time visits. Also, if your pet has records from a shelter, breeder or previous vet, it is very important to get that information to your new vet so she will have a thorough understanding of your pet’s health and history. Please don’t be late for your appointment! Promptness for appointments is an absolute must. We have a limited amount of time per appointment, so every minute counts. Also, if you are rushed, anxious and stressed when you come into your pet’s visit because you were running late, your pet will also be anxious and stressed. Unless asked for your help, leave pet-handling to the pros. We know you love your pet and that you know how to handle them. However, in the vet’s office, professional staff are the experts. Also, in the veterinary setting, many pets do not act like they do at home as they are nervous or anxious. The vet and the vet staff can learn a lot about your pet by interacting with it, so leave the pet handling to them. They will let you know if there is something you can do to help.
and injure it (don’t laugh, it happens all the time). Fact is, even the most responsible pet owners have pets that get injured. Please don’t worry about what the vet or techs will think of you; their concern is getting your pet better, not passing judgment. Please warn your vet in advance if your pet is aggressive, and keep your pet restrained. If you have an aggressive pet, let your vet know in advance. With advanced knowledge, your vet may be able to provide medication to reduce your pet’s anxiety and make the visit less stressful. When bringing your pet in, aggressive or not, please make sure it is properly restrained for its own safety, the safety of other animals, and the safety of you and the vet and technicians. Cats should be in a carrier designed for them; not in a cardboard box or on your lap. Small dogs can be in a carrier, or on a short, sturdy leash. Large dogs should be on a short, sturdy leash, not a retractable, flexible one (refer to last month’s column in which flexi-leads are one of the things you should throw out right now). Consider purchasing pet insurance. Pet insurance may be worth it for your pet. Depending upon your plan, it may make testing and complicated procedures and surgeries much more affordable. Having pet insurance may allow your pet to receive a life-saving surgery that you might not otherwise be able to afford. There are many companies out there that offer pet insurance and many plans ranging from emergency only coverage to complete wellness plans. As always, discuss any concerns you have with your vet. We are here to help you and your pets have long, healthy lives together! Please send all your veterinary questions to: AskTheVet@canterburyvet.com or mail them to Ask the Vet c/o Canterbury Animal Hospital 88 Delaware Avenue Delmar, NY 1205439-2700
Ask your questions! The only stupid question is the one not asked. If you have questions, just ask them. You’ll feel relieved to have all the answers, and your vet will better understand you and your concerns as a pet owner. Be wary of the Internet. The Internet has tons of information and forums related to pet concerns and illnesses. While there are some excellent and trustworthy websites, there are also many that provide information that is not as reliable. Many sites and posts are authored by people who are not veterinarians or animal care professionals. The information they provide is often based on their own experiences and opinions or information that has been gathered from other sources, which may or may not be accurate. Diagnosis is best left to professionals. Please be honest. Lying to or misleading your vet about how an injury or illness occurred isn’t helping anyone, least of all your pet (and we can usually tell if you are lying!). Accidents happen. People look away for a minute and a puppy eats something it shouldn’t. You forget to shut the screen door and your cat gets out and gets into a fight with another cat. You accidentally step on your cat’s tail p. 16

FINANCIAL FOCU$ How Can You Meet Your Short-term Goals?
Why do you invest? If you’re like most people, you’d probably say that, among other things, you want to retire comfortably. Obviously, that’s a worthy long-term goal, requiring long-term investing. But as you journey through life, you’ll also have short-term goals, such as buying a second home, remodeling your kitchen or taking a muchneeded vacation. Will you need to invest differently for these goals than you would for the long-term ones? To answer that question, let’s first look at how you might invest to achieve your longer-term goals. For these goals, the key investment ingredient is growth – quite simply, you want your money to grow as much as possible over time. Consequently, you will likely want a good percentage of growth-oriented vehicles, such as stocks and other stock-based investments, to fund your 401(k), IRA or other accounts. However, the flip side of growth is risk. Stocks and stockbased investments will always fluctuate in value – which means you could lose some, or even all, of your principal. Hopefully, though, by putting time on your side – that is, by holding your growth-oriented investments for decades – you can overcome the inevitable short-term price drops. In short, when investing for long-term goals, you’re seeking significant growth and, in doing so, you’ll have to accept some degree of investment risk. But when you’re after short-term goals, the formula is somewhat different: You don’t need maximum growth potential as much as you need to be reasonably confident that a certain amount of money will be there for you at a certain time.
with Jerry Pittz
You may want to work with a financial professional to select the appropriate investments for your short-term goals. But, in general, you’ll need these investments to provide you with the following attributes: Protection of principal – As mentioned above, when you own stocks, you have no assurance that your principal will be preserved; there’s no agency, no government office, guaranteeing that you won’t lose money. And even some of the investments best suited for short-term goals won’t come with full guarantees, either, but, by and large, they do offer you a reasonable amount of confidence that your principal will remain intact. Liquidity – Some short-term investments have specific terms – i.e., two years, three years, five years, etc. – meaning you do have an incentive to hold these investments until they mature. Otherwise, if you cash out early, you might pay some price, such as loss of value or loss of the income produced by these investments. Nonetheless, these types of investments are usually not difficult to sell, either before they mature or at maturity, and this liquidity will be helpful to you when you need the money to meet your short-term goal. Stability of issuer – Although most investments suitable for short-term goals do provide a high degree of preservation of principal, some of the issuers of these investments are stronger and more stable than others – and these strong and stable issuers are the ones you should stick with. Ultimately, most of your investment efforts will probably go toward your long-term goals. But your short-term goals are still important – and the right investment strategy can help you work toward them.
