FINANCIAL FOCU$ Women Business Owners: Don’t Forget About Your Retirement Plan American Business Women’s Day is celebrated on Sept.

22. And there is indeed cause for celebration, because, in recent decades, the number of women business owners has risen sharply, to the point where nearly 40 percent of all businesses are now women-owned, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. If you are one of these owners, or thinking about becoming one, you’ll always have a lot to think about when running your business, but there’s also an area you can’t ignore – your retirement.

Specifically, you need to consider establishing your own retirement plan.

Most plans available to you are fairly easy to establish and maintain, and are not terribly costly to administer. Here are some popular options: Owner-only 401(k) – This plan, also known as an individual or solo 401(k), is available to self-employed individuals and business owners with no full-time employees other than themselves or a spouse. For 2018, you can put in up to 25 percent of your annual income as an “employer” contribution, and you can defer up to $18,500 (or $24,500 if you’re 50 or older).

The sum of your employer contribution and your salary deferrals cannot exceed $55,000, or $61,000 if you’re 50 or older. You can make elective contributions on a pre- or post-tax (Roth) basis. Pre-tax contributions reduce your taxable income for the current year. Roth contributions don’t offer any immediate tax benefit, but any qualified withdrawals will be 100% tax-free.

SEP IRA – If you have just a few employees or are selfemployed with no employees, you may want to

consider a SEP IRA. You’ll fund the plan with taxdeductible contributions, and you must cover all eligible employees. As an employer, you can contribute the lesser of 25% of your compensation (if you’re also an employee of your own business) or $55,000.

Solo defined benefit plan – Pension plans, also known as defined benefit plans, are less common than in previous years, but you can still set one up for yourself if you’re self-employed or own your own business. This plan has high contribution limits, which are determined by an actuarial calculation, and your contributions are typically tax-deductible.

SIMPLE IRA — A SIMPLE IRA, as its name suggests, is easy to set up and maintain, and it can be a good plan if your business has fewer than 10 employees.

However, while a SIMPLE IRA may be advantageous for your employees, it’s less generous to you, as far as allowable contributions go, than an owner-only 401(k), a SEP IRA or a defined benefit plan. For 2018, your annual contributions are generally limited to $12,500, or $15,500 if you’re 50 or older by the end of the year. You can also make a matching contribution of up to 3% of your compensation.

As an employer, your contributions are fully deductible as a business expense up to certain limits; as an employee, your pretax contributions reduce the amount of your taxable income for the same tax year.

Before opening any of these plans, you’ll want to consult with your tax advisor on the tax issues and a financial professional on the investment aspects. But don’t wait too long. You will need to work hard to keep your business thriving – so choose a retirement plan that works just as hard for you.

Summer’s fading and fall is on the horizon. The cicadas are still singing, but soon they will be chorusing to school buses before receding with the onset of autumn colors.

So of course, we’re all in the mood to talk about taxes.

Conrad had many adventures. He landed in rough and tumble Dead Wood, South Dakota for a few Two Niver years where he panned for gold and perhaps made a tidy fortune. He also had a terrible encounter with Sons and the desperados in Cheyenne, Wyoming, then a frontier town. Garret Niver enlisted in the U.S. Army’s 7th Cavalry on October 2,1873, at age twenty-seven in New York City under the assumed name of Garrett H. Van Allen.

He listed his occupation as farmer and the enlistment records indicate that he had blue eyes, brown hair, and was 5'7" in height. Family tradition says he used an alias order to protect his mother.

The 7th Calvary was organized after the Civil War and in 1873 was stationed at Fort Abraham Lincoln in Dakota Territory. Garret must have traveled there and would have served under Lt. Col. George A. Custer. One wonders if he went with Custer and the 7th Calvary when they explored the Black Hills in 1874 and found gold there. Garret was certainly part of Custer’s column on the fateful day two years later when the 7th met defeat at the hands of the Lakota and Cheyenne during the Battle of the Little Big Horn. Garrett’s memorial at Bethlehem’s Elmwood Cemetery reads “Killed in the Custer massacre on the Little Big Horn Dakota June 26, 1876.”

About the same time that Garret was out west, his younger brother Conrad was also heading in that direction. After a brief time in West Barre, New York, as either a shop keeper or school teacher, and due to some poor decisions (apparently, he tried to finance his honey moon with forged bank notes) Conrad determined his only option was to change his name and go west. John Eddy seems to have always felt the pull of home in Bethlehem. He and Nellie moved back to the area in 1906 first purchasing the Hurlbut estate in Glenmont, then later moving to 732 Madison Avenue in Albany.

It appears that a lot of her hobbies such as sewing, cycling, twirling a baton in the marching band, organizing, and gardening require her shoulders to be rolled forward and/or her head to be down. Over time, these repetitive movements have created a Dowager’s Hump in between her lower neck and upper back.

Both Dr. Kinkaid and Dr. Seaver have worked with Lisa, discussing the importance of good posture, stretching, strengthening and consistent chiropractic care. Since beginning care, the appearance of her Dowager’s hump is notably reduced. As the hump reduces in size, Lisa’s symptoms of neck pain into the arms with frequent numbness continue to reduce.

Dear Fellow Readers…

As you read this I am probably with my family on Sebec Lake in north central Maine; breathing in the fresh balsam scented air, relaxing on the deck overseeing the crystal waters of the lake. Hummingbirds & dragonflies may be dancing overhead as Seamus, my husband & family reconnect & refresh in this incredible place. Sebec is about 3 hours from the "ocean destinations" and in the center of the state. The lake flows 11 miles long and 2 miles wide at its widest point. A large portion of the northern shore is undeveloped and only accessible by boat. It is thru the graciousness of my sister-in-law, Ann that we have the time on Sebec each year. This year we opened the camp in May and return, perhaps to close it up for the season.

The summer season comes to a close up there with the Piscataquis County Fair in the town of Dover-Foxcroft, just 5 miles from the lake's shore. The Monday following that, school starts, and the lake, a mecca for kayak, canoe, pontoon, motorboats & sailboat, become eerily still . This is when I love to swim in our cove the best! The cool, still water is often occupied by just me, under Seamus' watchful eye. At night, the lone loon calls out, fewer camps on the other shore have lights on and the night sky is full beyond anything one can see near a city, often sprinkled with meteorite showers. The evening air wafts with the sweet smell of campfire smoke as I cuddle up on the screen porch with my next "read". This year I am bringing 6 novels, with hopes to make it thru most of them. I have the next in the Scotland Yard Mysteries by Alex Grecian. I can't wait to read the sequel, "On the Bright Side: The Secret Diary of Hendrik Groen age 85" my next Stephen King, "Sleeping Beauties", the next in the "Alienist" series by Caleb Carr along with a few others. I have packed a few games including Mille Bornes (in French) card game donated to my granddaughter by bookshop friend Jan, coloring books and French paper dolls!

Maine is my place to also create incredible meals made with just picked farmstand produce, eat lobster (which is brought in daily from the shore 2 hours away) support the local shops with purchases of homemade bread, chicken pie, cookies, homemade ice cream, fresh fruit pies and whoopee pies! Can't wait to check out the new bakery in town and the farm to table shop that just opened. We visit the cemeteries while we recall memories of relatives now at peace under a cedar tree or burning bush. The tiny town church reminds me of the fellowship of townies & the vacationers who boost the small town economy.

When I return to the shop it, school will have already resumed! Just a reminder to all teachers: all

Bethlehem Senior ProjectsTrip

Hop On The Bus to Cooperstown on Saturday, October 13th

There is a day trip to Cooperstown and it is open to one and all! The journey includes the fall foliage bus ride to Cooperstown and a drop off at the Farmer’s Museum, the Fenimore Art Museum or on Main Street. Lunch for all will be at the Otesaga Hotel and then we will continue on to wine tasting at Bear Pond Winery. This is a fund raiser for Bethlehem Senior Projects, Inc. ( 501©3) and the cost is $65, including a donation to the Senior Projects. The entry fee for the museum, if you are planning to go to one, is extra.

The bus leaves Bethlehem Town Hall at 8:00am and will return to Town Hall at 5:00pm.
