To Protect and Serve Election Day has finally come and gone. We can now all breathe a sigh of relief and settle back into our usual way of life. I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to all the residents who displayed the “We Support Bethlehem Police” sign and stood by us during this most difficult year in law enforcement. Our public engagement campaign was a tremendous success. Going door-todoor allowed us to connect with residents outside of the uniform and really understand the concerns of the community. Your feedback was invaluable and I will be working with our elected officials to implement many of your recommendations. Our only regret was not being able to meet every resident, especially those who have concerns or recommendations that have not yet been heard. For those residents, or those who request a followup, please don’t hesitate to contact me and I will personally meet with you outside the scope of my official duties. You may email me at BethlehemPBA@gmail.com. Despite many of our endorsed candidates coming up short at the polls, I would like to thank all the candidates for their hard work and commitment to Bethlehem. Disagreement between candidates on how to best serve our residents provides choice and only strengthens our democratic process. Civil debate is a fundamental right and core freedom that we enjoy as citizens of this great country. I would like to congratulate Town Board Member Bill Reinhart on his successful bid for County Legislator. He was an asset to our Town Board and will be truly missed. Bill’s departure will leave a vacant Town Board seat which the Town Board will fill by appointing someone as an interim Town Board Member until next November’s general election. It would be quite unifying if the Town Board considered appointing Town Supervisor Candidate Jim Foster to the vacant board position since more than 49.9% of our voting residents wanted Foster to represent them. By appointing Foster, the Town Board can show that they want to listen to and provide a voice for all our voters, not merely half of them. This is a wonderful opportunity for our elected officials to demonstrate nonpartisanship, strong leadership, and a true commitment to the basic principles of representative democracy. Finally, I would like to congratulate John Clarkson and his winning team. I look forward to resuming discussions with Supervisor Clarkson and hope for a successful resolution regarding the staffing, scheduling, overtime, equipment and contractual issues plaguing our police department. Regardless of who our elected officials are, I will always advocate on behalf of public safety and proper working conditions that support our ability to better serve our community. Advocating for such is not Democrat or Republican, it is American, and it is my duty to you and my officers. Rest assured that no matter what your political affiliation or stance on law enforcement, we have been, and always will be there to protect and serve you. As always, we thank you and appreciate your support. Best, Michael J. Berben

Canterbury Vet While this column is typically focused on household pets, veterinarians are involved with animals beyond the pets we have at home or in our barns. December 4th is Wildlife Conservation Day. The world’s best loved species are being slaughtered by widespread and dangerous criminal networks. Driven by a voracious demand for illegal animal parts and products, the black market in wildlife rivals that of illegal arms and drugs. Increasingly, wildlife traffickers are the same kingpins involved in trafficking people and arms and narcotics. Wildlife crime is a serious crime, not a distant problem in a faraway country. It is a global challenge that spans continents and crosses oceans. It is a concern and not just because we care about elephants, rhinos and tigers. It is not just the animals that are suffering. Park rangers on the front lines of conservation are being killed on a regular basis by poachers they’re trying to stop. Local communities that depend upon wildlife for tourism are being robbed of their livelihoods. Corruption and intimidation are weakening law enforcement efforts. Unscreened wildlife and wildlife parts increase the risk of human health pandemics such as bird flu. Regional security is compromised as militarized groups cash in on this lucrative and rapidly growing trade, using it to finance insurrection and even terrorist activity. Everyone involved is suffering. There are synthetic substitutes for things like ivory and fur that don’t require the slaughter of an animal to obtain. It is very hard to tell the difference between high-quality synthetic substitutes and the real thing. There is no excuse for the amount of animals being poached every year. The world’s wildlife is being lost at a stunning rate. In 2011 alone, for example, there were 13 large-scale seizures of ivory, and over 23 tons of ivory confiscatedwhich is equivalent to at least 2,500 elephants. A 2010 United Nations report suggests that gorillas could disappear altogether from large parts of the Congo Basin by the mid-2020s. A call to action was put out by Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in 2012 to raise awareness and engage conservationists on Wildlife Conservation Day, December 4. “Wildlife cannot be manufactured. And once it’s gone, it cannot be replenished. Those who profit from it illegally are not just undermining our borders and our economies, they are truly stealing from the next generation,” she said. “We want to make buying goods, products from trafficked wildlife, endangered species unacceptable, socially unacceptable. We want friends to tell friends they don’t want friends who ingest, display, or otherwise use products that come from endangered species anywhere in the world.” 6

So what can you do to make a difference for wildlife? Raise awareness and contribute to the conservation and protection of endangered species such as elephants, rhinos and tigers on World Wildlife Conservation Day’s website. This global occasion provides everyone with the opportunity to learn more about wildlife conservation and to be part of the solution to wildlife crime. Learn how to become a responsible consumer in order to stop illicit wildlife trade. Do not buy any wildlife souvenirs from the endangered list. Focus instead on handicraft souvenirs that promote artisan professions without damaging wildlife. To ensure consumers aren’t unknowingly participating in the illicit trade in wildlife, the International Fund for Animal Welfare urges people to think twice before purchasing the following items:

1. Ivory 2. Products made of exotic skins: alligator, crocodile, lizard or snake such as belts, boots, handbags, wallets, etc... 3. Elephant hair items 4. Exotic birds 5. Live reptiles 6. Coral and Queen Conch shells 7. Exotic wood – The loss of habitat in old growth forests is devastating for wildlife. In general if a wood is relatively light it is from a fast growing tree and is likely okay. If it feels heavy and dense it is from a slow-growing tree which needs protection 8. Turtle shells 9. Porcupine quill accessories 10. Tiger-derived products such as bone wine, teeth or pelts 11. Any traditional medicinal products claiming to contain rhino horn, bear bile or other animal derivatives 12. Bird eggs or bird nests 13. Shahtoosh wool products (from the hair of Tibetan antelopes) – actually illegal in the United States

This holiday season commit to preserving nature’s beauty for future generations. Happy Holidays and a peaceful New Year. Bethlehem

Dear Neighbor and Supporter, In 1942, the Bethlehem Community White Christmas Festival began as several nights of group performances. Donations collected were used to extend the spirit of community to our less fortunate neighbors throughout the entire year. This spirit was so strong that the activities of the Festival continue today as the Bethlehem Community Fund.

Bethlehem’s Community Fund quietly helps children, families, individuals and the elderly living in the Bethlehem Community whose needs fall through the cracks of traditional programs. Throughout our seventy three year history the fund has come to the aid of thousands of Bethlehem residents, young and old alike, quickly, without red tape. Every dollar donated is used for assistance. neighbors helping neighbors since 1942

Community Fund

Assistance is given anonymously with the utmost respect for the pride and privacy of the recipients. This is a longstanding tradition of the Fund. School personnel, local clergy, Bethlehem Senior Services and other providers make most of the requests for assistance.

• Children receive help with school supplies, tutoring, eyeglasses, clothing, camp tuition & other needs. • Several Bethlehem Festival Fund Scholarships are awarded to local High School students each year. • Seniors may find assistance with utility bills, small home repairs, medical costs, a personal emergency response system or pet care. • Each December, over 100 Bethlehem families receive baskets of food, clothing and gifts. With the Holiday Season fast approaching, Bethlehem’s Community Fund is looking at a record number of families needing food baskets. We will soon be ordering our turkeys and coordinating our holiday deliveries. Financial responsibilities and human service needs in our schools and community increase during this time of year. Our goal of $30,000 will enable us to meet many of the needs of our Bethlehem neighbors throughout the year.

Your gift will touch the lives of many people in the Bethlehem community by helping each recipient in a unique and much needed way. Thank you for your support of this valuable community effort. Warmest regards,

This years Turkey Trot was dedicated to our very dear friend Sheila Fuller. She was an incredible lady who was a mentor and a friend to everyone. As our Town Supervisor for 10 years, she was a huge part of making this town the very special place it is today. She will be loved and missed forever. In her memory ~ To anyone who brought a canned good for our Food Pantry, we thank you! To anyone who carried a box, held a door, passed out a t-shirt, or helped out just because they believe in helping their neighbors, we thank you! To anyone who handed out the water that Hannaford always donates, or clapped, cheered and screamed while freezing their butt off, we thank you. To our community groups, who gathered today to remember a loved one, reunite with friends, or just came together to strengthen their bond, we thank you. To anyone who was a sponsor, your generosity is amazing. CLIF Bars, Bananas, Appetizers, HUGE Gift Card discounts, awesome Give-A-Ways and even 1,000 Free Car Washes!... we cannot thank you enough.

FINANCIAL FOCU$ Holiday Spending

Can Help Teach Children About Money During this holiday season, you’ll likely be spending money, in various amounts and in various ways. And you can use this experience to teach your children about money management. Here are a few ideas for doing just that: •Stick to a budget. Tell your children you’ve set aside a certain amount of money for gifts and holiday events, such as hosting parties, and that you won’t exceed it. And if you have saved money throughout the year in a special holiday fund, let your kids know about that, too. This information should help impress upon them the importance of sticking with a budget and saving for a goal. •Discuss credit and debt. Ideally, you won’t have to use your credit cards to an unusual degree during the holiday season. If you do, though, explain to your children that using a credit card is not the same thing as “free” money, and that your goal is to pay off the card as soon as possible, so that you won’t have to pay even more for your purchases in the form of interest payments.

•Compare short- and long-term goals. Explain to your children that your holiday spending is the result of having saved for, and met, a short-term goal, but that you are also saving for long-term goals, such as retirement. Depending on the age of your kids, you might want to go into somewhat more detail, such as describing, in general terms, the different ways you save for the different goals. For example, for your holiday spending, you might be

with Jerry Pittz

drawing on money from your checking account – or, as mentioned above, a holiday fund, possibly kept in a lowrisk, liquid vehicle – while for your long-term goals, you might be relying in part on your employer-sponsored retirement plan, such as a 401(k). The key point to get across is that you have various financial goals in life with various means of working toward achieving them. •Introduce your children to investing. If you’ve already brought up the topic of saving for long-term goals, why not take it a step further and give your children a doorway into the investment world? Specifically, consider giving them a few shares of stock, possibly in companies with which they are already familiar, and help them follow these stocks. One way of giving stocks to children is through a custodial account, which can be opened under the Uniform Transfer to Minors Act (UTMA) or the Uniform Gifts to Minors Act (UGMA). Keep in mind, though, that once your child reaches the age of majority – usually 18 or 21 – he or she gets full control of the money in the account. Plus, your gift is irrevocable. •Be generous. If you’re going to make charitable gifts, let you kids know about it – or even let them help pick the charities. It will show them that one purpose of wealth accumulation is to give back to the world. By providing some financial education to your kids this holiday season, you’ll be giving them a gift that can last long after the festivities have ended. The Selkirk Rail Yard By Susan E. Leath

fo de Workers with the Walsh Construction company work on a roundhouse at the Selkirk Yard circa 1923.

Cover: David Todd Magill's photograph shows his daughter Maddie Magill using her own camera to take a picture of the trains at the Selkirk Yards in October 2015. The photo was taken from Ben's bridge which is currently being demolished.

The Alfred H. Smith Memorial Bridge, completed November 15, 1924, is 5,245 feet long. The highest point above the water is 210 feet with the tracks 148.5 feet above the river. 22,600 tons of steel and 508,000 rivets went into the building of the bridge.

In the dead of night, the far off sound of a train whistle can sound soothing or even romantic. The clanging and banging of freight cars are not so easy on the ears. If you live in the southern part of town, you might hear those late night noises coming from the Selkirk Rail Yard. An active and busy railroad classification and maintenance yard, the Selkirk yard dates from 1924.

At its completion, the Selkirk Yard was described as the “greatest and most up to date gravity freight classification yard in existence.” It was said to be the largest in the world. Here trains of many cars were assembled. Freight cars were, and still are to this day, pushed up the hump, identified and classified at the top, uncoupled, and sent down the hump on the other side. Gravity provided the energy as the cars were switched to the appropriate track and then banged into the end of the waiting train. A sound that still echoes today.

Circa 1900, the West Shore Railroad line heads north through Ravena, South Bethlehem and on northwest towards Schenectady. A branch line split off just north of Ravena and goes through Selkirk and on north to Albany. On the eastern shore of the Hudson River are the Hudson Division line coming up from New York City and the Boston and Albany Railroad coming in from the east. A large number of passengers and freight moved along these lines and bottlenecks formed at the drawbridges in Albany as trains waited their turn to cross the Hudson. Another issue was the hill heading from Albany out to the West Albany Yards. It required extra pusher engines to power up the steep grade. Time was lost waiting for the extra locomotives. As early as 1910, the New York Central Railroad was planning a more efficient means of moving freight. Conceived and championed by New York Central President Alfred H. Smith, the Castleton Cut-Off project addressed these obstacles by sending freight trains over the Hudson River south of Albany on a high and level bridge. The project included a massive new rail yard, which, with its rural setting, had plenty of room for expansion. Construction began in 1922 and was completed in 1924 at a cost of $25 million. 30

In 1968, the yards were significantly improved. The Altamont Enterprise described the renamed Alfred E. Perlman Yard as the “railroad industry’s most modern, electronic freight classification yard.” A 1968 brochure published by Conrail (predecessor to today’s CSX) notes that “trains of 150 or more can efficiently be classified in less than one hour, assisted by computers and other devices. This allows more than 3,200 cars per day to be handled

for consolidation and movement to as many as 70 destinations.” Along with classifying and assembling trains, the yards included maintenance and repair shops. In 1924 there were two roundhouses with a capacity of 62 locomotives. A roundhouse is a large circular or semicircular structure that surrounds or is next to a turntable. Engines are driven on the turntable, and then the table is rotated to line the engine up with a maintenance stall. The turntable in 1924 was 100 feet in diameter. Today, Bethlehem residents hear the whistles from trains traveling to and from the Selkirk yards. On the west, the tracks travel out of the yards in the town of New Scotland through Feura Bush north to Vorheesville. On the east side of town, trains travel up from the yards through the hamlet of Selkirk and on to the Port of Albany area and beyond.

This article explains why motorists whould give their vehicle a complete physical before a Holiday trip. It includes the items to check. Tow truck operators in resort areas or along Interstate highways see all too many travelers forced to return home ahead of schedule. Car trouble, usually due to neglected preventive maintenance, brings an end to vacation plans. The situation usually means more than just a repair bill. It can involve towing charges, lodging and possibly a rental car. Add to that the cost of extra phone calls, meals and general inconvenience, and the ordeal becomes expensive. This scenario usually can be avoided with a pre-vacation inspection performed by a qualified automotive technician. This “physical” for your automobile should address the following systems: Cooling Braking Emission control Steering/suspension Fuel Electrical and ignition In addition, the tech should evaluate engine performance, tires/wheels, A.C./heater/defroster, instruments/gauges, windshield wipers, horns/lights/mirrors, seat belts and the car’s body, inside and out.

Portion of a 1924 map of the Castleton Cut-Off highlights the bridge and yard.

Susan E. Leath presently serves as Bethlehem’s Town Historian. She is the author of Bethlehem an illustrative history of our town with over 200 images dating from the 1880s to 1960. The book is available at local booksellers and online. Visit her blog at: BethlehemNYHistory.blogspot.com. Susan welcomes your suggestions for future Then and Now articles. She can be reached at sleath@townofbethlehem.org

Not only can a pre-trip inspection help reduce chances of costly and possibly dangerous road trouble, it also provides an opportunity to have repairs made at home, with one’s own technician who knows the vehicle. Especially important, it provides peace of mind. While no inspection can guarantee a car’s performance, it’s comforting to know proper precautions were taken.

Sarah was very grateful for her scholarship to the Y. “When I was unemployed, the twice weekly morning yoga classes gave my week structure and purpose. As I gained strength, I gained confidence that I would find a job that I loved soon. Taking care of my body helped keep my mind clear. As a single parent, I tend to put myself last in the priority of family life. Having a place to go to nurture my own self has been the greatest blessing the Y could give me.” You’re the reason Sarah’s able to feel confident and calm as she cares for her family and searches for a new job. Your support makes this story possible. You’re the reason the Y’s here, in our community doing good.

Legacy – To create the something as extraordinary as the Adirondack Mountains it took millions of years – you have about 74. Hundreds of years from now it won’t matter what car you drove, how big a house you lived in or what your bank account was. But what you can be remembered for is your kindness and generosity – your willingness to make a difference in the lives of many people – or just one. A young man is walking along the ocean and sees a beach on which thousands and thousands of starfish have washed ashore. Further along he sees an old man, walking slowly and stooping often, picking up one starfish after another and tossing each one gently into the ocean. “Why are you throwing starfish into the ocean?,” he asks. “Because the sun is up and the tide is going out and if I don’t throw them further in they will die.” “But, old man, don’t you realize there are miles and miles of beach and starfish all along it! You can’t possibly save them all, you can’t even save one-tenth of them. In fact, even if you work all day, your efforts won’t make any difference at all.” The old man listened calmly and then bent down to pick up another starfish and threw it into the sea. “It made a difference to that one.”

Trish Pix Tattered Pages Used Books

My Darlin’ Dad, resides in a local nursing home & I have continued to read to him from the Joshua series, by Father Joseph Girzone. I had the pleasure of being taught by Father Girzone while he was in the early stages of creating his Joshua series…a parable of a modern day Jesus, and how he would be accepted if he came today hold my Dad’s attention. On my drive home, I often reflect upon the days chapters and how this activity continues to connect me to my Dad. Recent topic of conversation here in the shop, again, is the comparison of well written books and their film adaptations. Most people express that they prefer the book over the movie. A movie may last 2 hours, where as a book may take several days or weeks to finish. The details are presented, but it is your own mind that translates the picture and has the opportunity to paint a more personal perception of the author’s words. A picture may be worth a thousand words, but what the author imparts through words can have a much greater impact, and it is nearly impossible to cover your eyes and read at the same time! Why not check out what books I have in the shop that were the inspiration for movies that are currently out in the theater This past month I read “Big Little Lies” a fast paced “dramedy” by Lianne Moriarty. Set in a present day coastal town in Australia, it tells of the conflicts, secrets, betrayals & subsequent murder within a Home & School Association. Perhaps I found myself smiling while reading it, the banter was witty, the mystery intriguing and the conclusion satisfying! I am currently 400 pages into the 4th book in the Game of Thrones series and enjoy the time spent, except for the number of characters names that start with “T”! I cannot take another new character with a T based name! Christmas romances, Christmas novels, craft books, cookbooks and all of the children’s Christmas & Holiday stories are on the shelves. I have Christmas cards and some small gifts for sale. Don’t forget that the jewelry show, featuring Delmar Farmer’s Market crafter, Dana Flint’s sterling silver earrings, with high end beads and Swarovski crystals will be on Saturday Dec. 12th & 19th from 11-4. We will be offering hot tea & homemade cookies & other surprises on those days. Gift certificates from Tattered Pages will also be available. Also, just a reminder that I accept major credit cards & checks! You can also have your picture taken any day with my adorable business partner, Seamus! Please remember your small business owners this shopping season. In the case of inclement weather this winter, call ahead, though I should be open the hours noted below. May the many blessings & gifts of this Christmas season be with you! Stay warm, stay healthy and if you need a book…you know where you can find 19,000 titles all at reduced prices!

Greetings of the Season, my dear Constant Readers, As I set my thoughts to paper, I ponder, “Where did the year go?” Tattered Pages celebrated its 9th year in business in October and our 8th year in this location in June. Since that first day we have had 3 owners, 2 part-time workers, 17 foster cats (in a relationship with AnimaLovers) all adopted, Riley my first beloved greeter dog and Seamus who currently works alongside me, and sold books to over 20,000 customers. Like the pages of a James Patterson novel, it has gone all too quickly! This past November I have had the good fortune of being able to keep the door to the shop wide open to the public! Seamus could be seen many an afternoon stretched out in the sun on the welcome mat! In 2015, I have had the pleasure visits in the bookshop by two of my granddaughters. Trinity, age 9, who has worked a few weekends with me in the shop and takes great pride in welcoming customers, helping out in the children’s section, and working behind the counter. Her little sister, Raven (just 3), was in the shop with her last week and buzzed right by me calling out, “Hi, Nonna” making a bee-line to the children’s section and the toy table. I chose to read 2 books to them that had a common theme, great illustrations and held Raven’s r attention! I sang, “There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly” by Rashin. The quirky illustrations of each animal “inside” along with the ability to predict what would happen next, truly held Raven’s attention. I followed that with the classic book by author illustrator, Jules Feiffer, “Bark, George”. With a similar premise, George is asked to bark but instead, he meows, quacks, oinks, moos etc. Mama takes George to the vet who dons a long rubber glove and reaches into George and extracts each farmyard animal until George at last “arfs”. Raven pronounced that that was silly! A book is a timeless gift, that you can easily personalize to each child’s personality. Making a gift bag or basket with a theme brings a wonderful level of personalization to your gift. Let your imagination guide you to what you could do with a great book in sports, cooking, fitness, mystery, romance etc. Just think what your golfer would think to have a great book by a golfing icon along with new golfing gloves, a box of tees and a hand towel or club cozies! For your budding chef, create a basket with cookbook, utensils and ingredients. I have several children’s cookbooks here on the shelves for a kid’s basket. How about a few “bodice ripper” romances, a box of chocolates, a mug, a scented candle & beverage of choice! There are several crafting books, instruction booklets for Until 2016…Trish & Seamus needlepoint, embroidery, quilting, crocheting etc. Recently added to the inventory are books in history, science, military, Patricia Eldridge is the owner/manager of Tattered Pages New & Used Books in the Glenmont Center Square, 365 Feura Bush Rd. art & music. Remember that all of our books start at a #447-9910, mytatteredpages@gmail.com, Tattered Pages, LLC on reduced price due to the fact that they were gently read by Facebook, www.tatteredpages365.webs.com others before I acquired them. Most are in gift giving quality! Open: M,T,W 10-5, Th. 10-6, Fri. 10-7, Sat. 10-4 I just recently took in 30 new books in the Sci-fi area alone & young adults section. 42

Holiday Shopping Safety Tips Shopping during the holiday season can present unique danger. Taking a few prevention measures can help keep your holiday season joyous. The holiday season is a time when busy people can become careless and vulnerable to theft and other holiday crime. The following tips from the Bethlehem Police Department Crime Prevention Section can help you be more careful, prepared and aware during the holiday season. • Shop during daylight hours whenever possible. If you shop at night, go with a friend or family member. • Dress casually and comfortably. • Avoid wearing expensive jewelry. • Do not carry a purse or wallet, if possible. • Always carry your Driver License with necessary cash, checks and/or a credit card you expect to use. • Even though you are rushed and thinking about a thousand things, stay alert to your surroundings. • Avoid carrying large amounts of cash. • Pay for purchases with a check or credit card when possible. • Keep cash in your front pocket. • Notify the credit card issuer immediately if your credit card is lost, stolen or misused. • Keep a record of all of your credit card numbers in a safe place at home. • Be extra careful if you do carry a wallet or purse. They are the prime targets of criminals in crowded shopping areas, transportation terminals, bus stops, on buses and other rapid transit. • Avoid overloading yourself with packages. Maintain a clear visibility and freedom of motion to avoid mishaps. • Beware of strangers approaching you for any reason. At this time of year, "con-artists" may try various methods of distracting you with the intention of taking your money or belongings.

Happy Holidays and a Safe New Year from your Bethlehem Police Department 43
