Americans spent nearly $19 billion in Valentine’s Day gifts last year, according to the National Retail Federation. Much of this money went for gifts with short shelf lives, such as candy, flowers and restaurant meals (and about $700 million was spent on gifts for pets). There’s certainly nothing wrong with giving chocolates or roses. But this year, think about going beyond the classic gifts. Instead, use Valentine’s Day as an opportunity to determine how you can make gifts with long-lasting impact to your circle of loved ones.

Here are some suggestions: •For your spouse or significant other … As long as your spouse or significant other has earned income, he or she may be able to contribute to a traditional or Roth IRA. So, consider giving a check to be used for that purpose. A traditional IRA can grow tax deferred, while contributions are usually taxdeductible. (Taxes are due upon withdrawal, and withdrawals prior to 59½ may be subject to a 10% IRS penalty.) While Roth IRA contributions are not deductible, any earnings growth can be distributed tax free, provided the account owner doesn’t take withdrawals until age 59½ and has had the account at least five years. For 2015 and 2016, the IRA contribution limit is $5,500, or $6,500 for those 50 or older.

•For your children … You don’t have to be rich to give your children a gift worth $1 million – you just have to help them through school. College graduates earn about $1 million more over their lifetimes than those without a degree, according to research from

Still, college isn’t cheap: The average annual cost – tuition, fees, room and board – for a private four-year college is more than $42,000, according to the College Board, while the comparable figure for a public four-year school is about $19,000. Your 529 plan contributions may be deductible from your state taxes, and any earnings growth can be withdrawn tax-free, provided it is used for qualified higher education expenses. •For your parents … If you have elderly parents, you may want to find out if they’ve got their retirement and estate plans in place. If they’ve already taken care of everything, you may not need to get involved – but if they’ve left some “loose ends,” your help could be a valuable gift. So, ask them if they have drawn up the necessary legal documents. Do they each have a will? Have they created a durable power of attorney, which allows them to name someone to make financial and health care decisions on their behalf if they become incapacitated? If it appears they have much work to do in these areas, you may want to offer to arrange a consultation for them with a legal advisor and a financial professional.

YMCA Social Conscience for 172 Years

If the Bethlehem YMCA was a human body the wellness center would be the muscles; working out every day to ensure strength and flexibility. Since the body is about 60 percent water we have our aquatics center. Our excellent YMCA staff is the nervous system, helping all our programs and offerings operate effectively.

Our members are the heart of everything the Y does every day. But did you know that the YMCA also has a conscience? It’s a conscience that is far older than any treadmill, pool or exercise program.

Meet George Williams. The man who founded the YMCA and established the Y’s social conscience that dates back to Victorian London, with a direct line to the Bethlehem YMCA’s current Annual Campaign.

George Williams founded the YMCA in London, England, on June 6, 1844, in response to unhealthy social conditions arising in the big cities at the end of the Industrial Revolution.

Growth of the railroads and industry brought many rural young men who needed jobs into cities.

Far from home and family, these young men often lived at work. They slept crowded into rooms over the company’s shop, a location thought to be safer than London’s dangerous and unhealthy tenements and streets.

Williams recognized an important community need and he acted to address it by founding the first YMCA. That Y got people off the streets, provided safe housing, and substituted Bible study and prayer for life on the streets.

In 1894, George Williams was knighted by Queen Victoria. He was later buried under St. Paul’s Cathedral among heroes and statesman, and there is a stained glass window in Westminster Abbey -with a red triangle – the Y’s former, long-time symbol, dedicated to Williams and the YMCA.

The social conscience of the YMCA has expanded a great deal in the past 172 years, but it’s mission was, and is, very clear: To put Christian principles into practice through programs that build healthy spirit, mind and body for all.

So how does that mission lead us from Victorian London in 1844 to Bethlehem N.Y. in 2016? Read that mission statement again. The most important words are the last two – “for all.”

The YMCA is a place where everyone is welcome regardless of age, race, religion, or financial circumstances. No one is turned away due to an inability to pay. We can only make and keep that commitment because of the generosity of our members contributing to our Annual Campaign. Funds raised through the campaign provide the financial assistance to ensure that our programs and services are available to the children and families that need our help.

Last year, the Bethlehem YMCA raised more than $100,000 through our Annual Campaign and 100 percent of the money raised stayed right here in our community.

It’s important to point out that the monthly fee paid by our members goes to pay for operating expenses, from utility costs to personnel to insurance.

Contributions to the Annual Campaign – to just site a few examples -- pays for children from low income families to attend summer camp; to help teenagers learn leadership skills; to fund programs that help people combat Parkinson’s disease; to help families deal with life threatening illnesses; or to pay for child care so an unemployed mom can look for a job.

From providing housing and Bible studies to homeless railroad workers in London over a century and a half ago, to providing a fun summer camp for needy kids in Bethlehem now, the social conscience of the YMCA has only grown stronger over time. It’s what makes the Y human. It’s what makes us much more than a gym. And it is all because of the kindness and generosity of our members and the people in our community who donate to the YMCA’s Annual Campaign.

& Now Selkirk Fire Department

By Susan E. Leath Cover: During the 1980s, the Childs engine was extensively rejuvenated and nowadays it makes regular parade appearances. Louis Picarazzi is again pictured behind the wheel in this modern photo.

In 1928, the Selkirk Fire Commissioners purchased this O.J. Childs fire apparatus. Sometime during the WWII years it was sold. It came into the possession of the New Salem Fire Department who returned it to Selkirk in the 1960s. Louis Picarazzi, a member of the Selkirk department since June of 1949, sits behind the wheel of the dilapidated vehicle.

For 88 years and counting the Selkirk Fire Department has been providing fire protection. The district covers 33 square miles, about half of the Town of Bethlehem.

It began in early 1926 when concerned citizens in the hamlet of Selkirk recognized the need. In March 1928 the Albany County Board of Supervisors officially adopted the resolution establishing the Selkirk Fire District. While the demands on firefighters have certainly changed over the years, the desire to help the community has not. Chuck Whitman, a forty year member and Chairman of the Board of Fire Commissioners, recently said, “The department strives to provide the best, professional public service.”

In December of 1926, five fire commissioners were elected and set about organizing the district and the fire company. They were T.B. Vanderzee, William T. Fletcher, Walter Miller, Neil D. Hyde, and Michael H. Mangini.

1928 was a busy time. In January, the commissioners voted to purchase fire fighting apparatus, in March the deposition to Albany County was filed and on March 27 the fire commissioners appointed T.B. Vanderzee as the first chief. He served from 1928-1933. They also appointed a chief mechanic and drivers: A.J. Lehman, William Paulsey, Ross G. Mathusa, Raymond Golden and George Coonley. In April, construction of the Maple Avenue station began and bids for a siren were accepted. In July, a meeting of residents was called to rally volunteers for the company.

Department records indicate the first fire alarm took place on November 16, 1928 at a hay barn fire at the Wilsey farm. And yet, a Card of Thanks in the April 13, 1928 Altamont Enterprise shows that the community was banding together to help each other months before that date. “We wish to express our appreciation and 24

thanks to the Selkirk Fire Department and our neighbors and friends for their acts of kindness during the recent fire. Howard Becker and family” reads the item. For the 18 years between 1928 and 1946, the department responded to an estimated 450 fire calls. The total for 2015 alone was 300.

Since 1928, Bethlehem has continued to grow. Station No. 2 was established in 1952 and in 1953 the fire commissioners accepted a donation of land from Jacob J. Wiggand for a new fire house on Glenmont Hill Road.

Station No. 3 was organized in 1956 and the new fire house in South Bethlehem was dedicated June 16, 1957.

A similar one was first put up in 1938 and then stolen in 1977. The current one is a replica of the 1938 one.

Over the years, all three stations have benefited from their respective Ladies Auxiliary. The first for Station No. 1 was organized in July 1929 with 25 charter members. An October 1929 notice states that they had 95 members and were working on plans for the year.

have supportive Ladies Auxiliaries. And it should be noted that today women are welcomed to become fire fighters as well as participate as part of the auxiliaries.

Another activity that should be noted is the Selkirk Fire Department’s annual Fireman’s Fair. This community event is entering its 60th year having started in 1956.

Canterbury Vet Valentines Pet Safety Valentine’s Day is fast approaching ... you know, that special day when Americans go buy their loved ones everything they can find at their local CVS: cards, chocolate, flowers and stuffed animals. Unfortunately, some of the wellintentioned gifts of love can be toxic or dangerous to your pets. Here are a few tips to keep your Valentine’s Day safe.

1. While beautiful, flower arrangements can be deadly.

All lily flowers are extremely toxic to cats and will cause fatal kidney failure. Even a tiny nibble of any part of the lily plant can be deadly to felines. If you have cats in your home, make sure that mixed arrangements of flowers do not contain any type of lilies and, if they do, pluck them out. Remember, cats can get almost anywhere and as the lilies wilt the petals can fall off and can be accessible to cats. If you think your cat has been exposed to any part of the lily plant, bring them immediately to the vet.

2. Give chocolates to your paramour, not your pooch!

Most of us know that chocolate is toxic to dogs. How toxic, depends on the kind of chocolate – baker’s, semisweet, milk or dark. Generally, the darker it is, the higher the toxicity. The best thing to do is to call your vet because they can tell you by the amount of chocolate the dog ate, what product it was, and how big your dog is, how worried you need to be.

3. Keep sugar-free foods out of your pet’s reach. Xylitol, an artificial sweetener found in many types of sugar-free candies and baked goods, is toxic to dogs and can cause liver failure. It’s best to read the ingredients list on any sugar-free foods and keep any products containing Xylitol out of your pet’s reach. Xylitol is hiding in many other foods as well, including some peanut butters.

6. Blow out the candles. The warm glow of candlelight is romantic and flattering, but open flames present obvious dangers. Never leave your pet alone with a lit candle or fire. They can knock over candles and harm themselves and your home.

7. Are you planning to gift a loved one a new puppy or kitten for Valentine’s Day? You may want to reconsider.

Mull it over and do your homework -- animals are not disposable, nor can they easily be repackaged, re-gifted, or returned if the recipient is not pleased.

Although no one knows for sure the exact origin of Valentine’s Day it is believe that it started in the Roman Empire around 270AD under the ruling of Claudius II During time of war Claudius did not want men to get married because he believed it made them weak.

It is said that Bishop Valentine would perform secret wedding ceremonies so men could marry their sweethearts.

Bishop Valentine got in big trouble for performing marriage ceremonies and was sent to jail.

While in jail Bishop Valentine wrote a love letter to the jailer’s daughter and signed from you Valentine.

Bishop Valentine was put to death for his crime on February 14th.

Why is the color red the symbol of Valentine’s Day? Red is the color of blood. It was once believed that the heart (the body’s organ that pumps the blood) is that part of the body that the feeling of love came from.

King Henry VII of England declared St. Valentine’s Day a holiday in 1537.

During Medieval Times girls would eat unusual foods on Valentine’s Day. It was believed that it made them have dreams about their future husband.

During the Middle Ages men and women would pick names out af a bowl and the person’s name they drew would be considered their Valentine. They would wear that person’s name on their sleeve for a week. This is where the saying wear your heart on your sleeve comes from.

Have you found time to read this winter, so far?

On slow days, I often cuddle up with Seamus, a hot cup of Scottish blend tea, and a good book. I recently finished Stephen King’s, “Revival”, a 2014 novel, that tells a tale of Jamie & his childhood minister, whose lives entertwine over the course of 50 years. I found it riveting.

The allegory of “revival”, re-birth, favors & paybacks fascinated me. I would think that this book would make for great discussion on many levels. I realized that this is my 45th Stephen King novel that I have read since I was 21! That doesn’t include the Dark Tower series, which I wouldn’t read until it was finished. I hate when you are deep into a series and then realize that the next book may take over a year to be published! My next book that I read was “One Minute after You Die” by Erwin Lutzer, a scripturally based look at what has been written, preached and theorized, as to what happens after we die. (Hint: this tied in well with “Revival”) I am currently reading a non-fiction by Douglas Preston & Mario Spezi “The Monster of Florence”, written while Preston lived in Florence, Italy with his family and writing his books with Lincoln Child. This recounts not only the facts behind the greatest serial killings in Italy but also the unusual manner of police & law procedures in the Italian justice system. The victims were engaged couples, killed while “parking” in the surrounding olive groves, fields and land surrounding Preston’s home. The police investigator (Spezi) could not believe that Americans did not know of this crime spree that continued for over 30 years in the beautiful & historic countryside of Florence, Italy!

Remember: the books at Tattered Pages are often in next to new condition for a fraction of the cost. I can’t compete with flea market, garage, and thrift store prices, but, I do offer a selection, service and prices that are hard to beat, especially if you buy on line. Many of my paperbacks start under $5, tradecovers start at $7 and hardcovers start at $9! If you have a trade credit account, you save an additional 20% at checkout! I will reserve titles for you if I don’t have them in store. I will order out of print books for you at a minimal profit for me! I only take 6 books at a time, 12 children’s books, 10 DVDs at a time. No Reader’s Digest condensed, no encyclopedias, and all books must be free of dust, dirt, odor, water damage, of course! No large donations, but if you are clearing an estate or large older collection, call me for I may have a referral for you.

My dear friends & constant readers,

Did you miss me last month? Well, I missed the deadline due to the wonderful chaos of preparing for the Holidays! I received a call on Dec. 21st that Teresian House had a room for my father & we had to have him there the next day or we might lose the room! Dad had lived for the past 16 months at Rosewood Gardens, in East Greenbush (after surgery for a broken hip) where the nurses & nurse’s assistants had built a warm & loving relationship with him. Some of the aids actually have come to visit him at Teresian, which is a much better fit both physically & spiritually. He can attend Mass & rosary daily…and the surroundings are like that of a 5 star hotel! We just recently celebrated his 87th birthday in an available space that is every bit as nice as an event room at the Century House! So, with helping him transition, finishing up Christmas necessities, I missed the deadline!

I have mentioned before how reading to my dad is a great way to spend some time with him. A voracious reader before Parkinson’s made that pleasure a chore, I read to dad for at least 20 minutes at each visit.

Amongst his books are “Chicken Soup for the Soldier”, Chicken Soup for the Father, “365 Saints a Day”, The New Testament, “God Calling” and the newest to his collection, a wonderful reading a day book by Joyce Meyer called, “Power Thoughts: 365 Daily Inspirations for Winning the Battle of the Mind” I have to say, Joyce Meyer’s writing is very approachable, understandable and uplifting. Parkinson’s often brings on depression and dementia for my Dad. These uplifting readings provide a springboard for conversation with my Dad especially when he is experiencing a one word answer day. For those of you may be in need of Large Print books, I have a nice selection of books here in the shop from romance to action to mystery. These books tend to range from $9-$13 which is 60% off the original publisher’s prices.

For the month of February all books in the “Romance” section will be an additional 15% off all month. What a great way to warm up on a cold, blustery day/night, but with a spicy romance, romance thriller, or historical fiction romance (often known as bodice rippers!). Also, in preparation for Valentine’s Day, Tattered Pages will be hosting another jewelry show in the shop! Designs by Dana will be featured here on Saturday, Feb. 13th, from 11-4am in the shop. August 26, 2016 marks the 96th anniversary of when the 19th amendment became part of the U.S. Constitution. It states, “The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex.”

Bethlehem Opportunities Unlimited (BOU) is sponsoring its 4th Annual Community Spelling Bee at the Bethlehem Central High School, Delaware Avenue in Delmar on

Thursday, February 25 at 6:30 p.m.

Snow date is set for Saturday, February 27 at 6:30 p.m.

Teams of three to five members will compete for prizes and the honor of being recorded as Bethlehem’s Spelling Champions. This is a team-based competition so no one spells alone. Last year’s Spelling Bee attracted 20 teams from the community and the school district. This year should not disappoint with teams expected from BCSD elementary, middle and high schools, Town Board, Real Estate firms, local banks, and last year’s champs, the Spellmartians. David Ksanznak, Hamagrael Elementary Principal, is Master of Ceremonies and Dave Norman, Music Supervisor for BCSD, is word pronouncer.

Bethlehem Opportunities Unlimited (BOU) is a not-forprofit organization that promotes prevention education and safe, healthy activities for the youth in our community.

Proceeds from this event will benefit BOU programs.

The deadline for team registrations is February 19, 2016 and after that on a space-available basis. Team sponsorships from area businesses and community organizations are ongoing. Registration forms and sponsorship forms are available at: http://www.bethlehemschools.org/community/bou/ While the team registration fee is $120 per team, prospective participants are encouraged to contact bouspellingbee@gmail.com if they need a team sponsor. Team attire and costumes are encouraged.

Spellers must be at least 13 years old to enter. Family team entries are welcome!! BOU is also seeking more team sponsors.

BOU expects this to be a popular event for families with children and a welcome antidote to winter’s cabin fever.

Supporters and cheering sections are expected to join in for an evening of F-U-N, P-H-I-L-A-N-T-H-R-O-P-Y and C-O-M-M-U-N-I-T-Y! Admission is free. Donations welcome. There will be lots of raffle items, entertainment and refreshments available.
