EXERCISE: 7 BENEFITS OF REGULAR PHYSICAL ACTIVITY
You know exercise is good for you, but do you know how good? From boosting your mood to improving your sex life, find out how exercise can improve your life.
By Mayo Clinic Staff
Want to feel better, have more energy and perhaps even live longer? Look no further than exercise. The health benefits of regular exercise and physical
activity are hard to ignore. And the benefits of exercise are yours for the taking, regardless of your age, sex or physical ability. Need more convincing to exercise? Check out these seven ways exercise can improve your life.
No. 1: Exercise controls weight Exercise can help prevent excess weight gain or help maintain weight loss. When you engage in physical activity, you burn calories. The more intense the activity, the more calories you burn. You don't need to set aside large chunks of time for exercise to reap weight-loss benefits. If you can't do an actual workout, get more active throughout the day in simple ways — by taking the stairs instead of the elevator or revving up your household chores. Continued on p.6

No. 2: Exercise combats health No. 6: Exercise puts the spark back into your sex life conditions and diseases Worried about heart disease? Hoping to prevent high blood pressure? No matter what your current weight, being active boosts high-density lipoprotein (HDL), or "good," cholesterol and decreases unhealthy triglycerides. This one-two punch keeps your blood flowing smoothly, which decreases your risk of cardiovascular diseases. In fact, regular physical activity can help you prevent or manage a wide range of health problems and concerns, including stroke, metabolic syndrome, type 2 diabetes, depression, certain types of cancer, arthritis and falls.
No. 3: Exercise improves mood Need an emotional lift? Or need to blow off some steam after a stressful day? A workout at the gym or a brisk 30-minute walk can help. Physical activity stimulates various brain chemicals that may leave you feeling happier and more relaxed. You may also feel better about your appearance and yourself when you exercise regularly, which can boost your confidence and improve your selfesteem.
No. 4: Exercise boosts energy Winded by grocery shopping or household chores? Regular physical activity can improve your muscle strength and boost your endurance. Exercise and physical activity deliver oxygen and nutrients to your tissues and help your cardiovascular system work more efficiently. And when your heart and lungs work more efficiently, you have more energy to go about your daily chores.
No. 5: Exercise promotes better sleep Struggling to fall asleep? Or to stay asleep? Regular physical activity can help you fall asleep faster and deepen your sleep. Just don't exercise too close to bedtime, or you may be too energized to fall asleep.
Do you feel too tired or too out of shape to enjoy physical intimacy? Regular physical activity can leave you feeling energized and looking better, which may have a positive effect on your sex life. But there's more to it than that. Regular physical activity can lead to enhanced arousal for women. And men who exercise regularly are less likely to have problems with erectile dysfunction than are men who don't exercise.
No. 7: Exercise can be fun Exercise and physical activity can be a fun way to spend some time. It gives you a chance to unwind, enjoy the outdoors or simply engage in activities that make you happy. Physical activity can also help you connect with family or friends in a fun social setting. So, take a dance class, hit the hiking trails or join a soccer team. Find a physical activity you enjoy, and just do it. If you get bored, try something new.
The bottom line on exercise: Exercise and physical activity are a great way to feel better, gain health benefits and have fun. As a general goal, aim for at least 30 minutes of physical activity every day. If you want to lose weight or meet specific fitness goals, you may need to exercise more. Remember to check with your doctor before starting a new exercise program, especially if you haven't exercised for a long time, have chronic health problems, such as heart disease, diabetes or arthritis, or you have any concerns.

FINANCIAL FOCU$ Time for Some New Year’s (Financial) Resolutions The countdown to 2016 has just about begun. If you’re like many people, you might be mulling over some New Year’s resolutions, such as hitting the gym more, learning a new language or taking a cooking class. All are worthy goals, but why not add some financial resolutions as well? For example … … Pay yourself first. Even if you aren’t living “paycheck to paycheck,” you probably don’t have much trouble spending your money – because there’s always something that you or a family member needs, always a repair required for your home or your car, always one more bill to pay. But if you are going to achieve your long-term goals, such as a comfortable retirement, you need to invest consistently. So before you pay everyone else, pay yourself first by having some money automatically moved from your checking or savings account each month into an investment. … Take advantage of your opportunities. If you have a 401(k) or similar plan at work, take full advantage of it. Contribute as much as you can afford – or at least enough to earn your employer’s match, if one is offered – and choose the mix of investments that give you the potential to achieve the growth you need at a level of risk with which you are comfortable.
with Jerry Pittz
… Focus on the long term. In the short term, you might be excused for not wanting to invest. The headlines are typically scary, the financial markets are frequently volatile and the future often looks murky. Yet, if you can look past the uncertainties of today and keep your focus on tomorrow, you will find it easier to follow a disciplined investment strategy that gives you the opportunity to meet your long-term goals, such as a comfortable retirement. …. Don’t be driven by fear. When the market is down, investors tend to react with fear. Specifically, they rush to sell their investments, afraid that if they don’t “cut their losses,” they might sustain even bigger ones. If you can get past this feeling, you may find that a down market can offer you the chance to buy quality investments at good prices. … Forget about the “hot stocks.” You’ll hear friends, co-workers and talking heads on television tout today’s “hot stocks.” But by the time you might hear about them, they may have cooled off – and, in any case, they might not be appropriate for your needs. Forget about “getting rich quick in the market” – it probably won’t happen. True investment success requires patience and persistence. … Cut down on your debts. It’s easy to pile up debts, but a lot harder getting rid of them. Yet, if you can reduce your debt load even moderately, you’ll free up money you could use to invest. So look for ways to conserve, cut back and consolidate – it will be worth the effort. Making these resolutions – and sticking to them – can help you as you work toward achieving your financial goals. This article was written by Edward Jones for use by your local Edward Jones Financial Advisor.

Get in Shape with Personal Training at Y The New Year’s resolution to get in shape is often made but rarely kept. If only you had someone to hold you accountable, motivate you to get to the YMCA, tell you what exercises are best for you, how to do them the right way, and help you get real results. That person exists at the Bethlehem YMCA – a personal trainer, and we’ve got the best. Personal training is truly an investment in one’s own health and wellbeing. Why do it? Lots of reasons. MOTIVATION – You spend so much of your time worrying about your kids, your job, and your spouse. Who is looking out for you? A personal trainer only cares about you and your success in achieving your goals. ACCOUNTABILITY -- Trainers are experts at holding you accountable. Your trainer will work with you to develop personalized goals and a realistic plan to meet them. DEVELOP A ROUTINE -- A personal trainer will help you develop a routine that makes sense for you, even if you haven’t worked out in a long time. Trainers also help you make adjustments as your fitness level improves to ensure continued progress. INJURY PREVENTION & REHAB – Personal trainers will show you how to use wellness equipment properly to reduce your risk of injury or help you rehab from an injury. MAXIMIZE WORKOUT TIME – The routine you develop with your trainer will ensure that you make the most of your time in the Y wellness center by getting in the most work in the shortest amount of time. And the most important reason of all --- RESULTS! Working with a trainer will allow you to achieve the results that you cannot achieve on your own. Whether it is weight loss, injury rehab, or just getting more fit, a trainer will lead you down a path to success by providing you with immediate feedback and encouragement that you can’t get in fitness magazines or from watching you tube videos. So who are the people at the Bethlehem Y that can provide you with that encouragement, motivation 16
and accountability? Here are the names and some background information about our personal trainers as well as a quote from each of them. Ethan Crevatas is the Y’s lead personal trainer. His specialty is TRX suspension training and group exercise. He is interested in running, weight lifting and teaching Tabata. Ethan’s quote: “Get up and get after it!” Gerard Cunningham is the Y’s Wellness Director and is a certified USA Hockey Coach and personal trainer who also competes in 5K races. Gerry’s quote: “You can either feel sore tomorrow or feel sorry tomorrow; make the decision today!” Rhakeem Wiggins participated in football and track at UAlbany and was the Strength and Conditioning coach at Morehead State University. Rhakeem is the Y’s Assistant Wellness Director. Rhakeem’s quote: “Building the best version of yourself mentally, physically and spiritually through hard-work, dedication and perseverance!” Cassy Leadenham’s specialty is instructing women on weight training, as well as conducting group exercise classes. Cassy’s quote : “When everything seems like an uphill struggle, just think of the view from the top.” Akeem Mauzon is a professional Gold Glove boxer, as well as a certified personal trainer. Akeem’s quote: “Despite any situation, there’s always room for improvement when perfecting your imperfections.” Jade Naylor is a certified personal trainer whose many interests include fitness, nutrition, learning and teaching Spanish, traveling, photography and cooking. Jade’s quote: “Champions are not the ones who always win races - champions are the ones who get out there and try!” Six personal trainers with different interests, different specialties, different approaches and different personalities. But all with the same goal – to help you get in better shape, to live healthier and to get results from your workouts. Please stop by the Bethlehem YMCA to learn more about our personal trainers and what they can do to help you towards a happier and healthier new year.

Ask the
Canterbury Vet Train Your Dog Month It’s only a few days into 2015 and people are hard at work on their New Year’s resolutions – keeping a tighter budget, going to the gym and eating less junk food. But January is National Train Your Dog Month so make a resolution to learn something new with your four legged friend. The Association of Pet Dog Trainers (APDT) began their National Train Your Dog Month in 2010 to raise awareness about the importance of pet training and healthy socialization as part of a dog’s overall wellbeing. People get dogs with the best of intentions but they often can’t cope with their untrained dog’s behavioral issues. The adult dog or puppy may be hyperactive, yippy or destructive. Maybe he’s fearful, shy, lashing out or behaving aggressively. Often it is not because they are bad dogs – rather they have not yet been given the appropriate tools they need in order to know how to behave like good dogs. Inexperienced owners might attempt temporary fixes that actually make the problems worse – isolation from the family and the house, yelling, shock collars or worse. January becomes the perfect month to remind both new and experienced pet owners to take time to train their pets. With consistency, well-timed praise and rewards, lots of practice and the guidance of an experienced dog training professional, you and your pooch will be learning and growing all year long. Training classes are not just for puppies. Adult dogs who may have a few basic commands under their belt will enjoy a more advanced class. Learning new things will help prevent boredom and behavioral problems. Find the perfect dog trainer for you and your dog by asking your veterinarian, local shelter and rescue organizations and your friends for recommendations. When you locate a trainer, ask if you can sit in on one of their classes. Observe if the dogs and owners seem happy. Chat with owners after class to get their impression of the trainer. Does the instructor emphasize socialization? Do the canines get to interact with one another during the class? Does the training facility seem like a safe, clean, sanitary environment for you and your dog? Is proof of vaccinations required to ensure your dog will join a healthy class? Does the trainer use positive reinforcement and denounce physical punishment? Ask the trainer their training philosophy to make sure it matches with yours. 18

Most importantly, remember that training your dog is not only beneficial, it’s fun. Canines thrive on mental stimulation. They relish the chance to learn and practice something new. More than that, they will love the chance to bask in your undivided attention. Time spent training is time spent bonding and making a strong relationship between you and your dog. Then
& Now A New Scotland Road Victorian By Susan E. Leath Cover: A modern view of the Mattice-Andreou home on New Scotland Road in winter time. Adam and Mary Mattice, circa 1910.
Adam is the son of John and Lorinda Bowman Mattice. The Mattice family is from Schoharie County and can trace their lineage back to the Palatine German migration of the early 1700s. Their ancestor, Johanis Nicholas Mattice, arrived in the Schoharie Valley about 1712. John made his living as a lawyer and the family moved a good bit, living in the town of Broom, then Slingerlands, then Albany, then again in Slingerlands where they seem to have finally settled. John and Lorinda’s But old homes like this speak to me about family daughter Rosalie married George Slingerland and we’re lucky to know who built this one about and another daughter, Nellie, married Cornelius 1895: Adam and Mary Mattice. Adam Mattice Slingerland. (1863-1917) and Mary Jane Hagadorn (18651949) married in 1885. They had three children The Mattice and Slingerland families were very Blanche (b.1883), Dudley (b. 1888) and John b. much intertwined in the hamlet of Slingerlands. In the 1892 New York census John and Lorinda (1897). are living near to Nellie and Cornelius. Cornelius is listed as a printer and his Slingerland Printing Company building still stands on New Scotland Road. Close by at the end of Mullens Road is his and Nellie’s fancy Victorian home. The 1900 U.S. Census has John and Lorinda living in the same household with their son Walter, his wife Honour and their daughter Edith. Fittingly, Walter is listed as a printer, probably at his brother-in-law’s printing company. New Scotland Road in Slingerlands is full of lovely, old Victorian style homes. The one featured here is no exception. Highlights include intriguing nooks and crannies, a cozy room in the tower, an original fireplace mantel and stained glass windows, architectural arches and antique hardware. Even the medallion over the front porch matches the one carved in the newel post on the stairway. All in all, a lovely and well preserved home.
The home circa 1900.

Getting back to Adam and Mary, we know Adam was a noted baseball player. He played with several teams in Albany and Schoharie counties in the 1880s and 90s including Central Bridge and the Slingerland Echos. Mattice was known for his curve ball. An undated newspaper article notes “Although there were pitchers in Albany familiar with the use of the curved ball,

Mattice was the first to introduce it in this vicinity, and by its use became practically invincible when opposing the old school of sluggers accustomed only to the swift straight kind.” The Albany Evening Journal of March 23, 1903 recalls an unusual game from 1882 which featured Mattice’s pitching for Central Bridge. It goes on to note that “He is now living in Slingerlands and is a train dispatcher for the Delaware & Hudson railroad, being as expert with the telegraph key as he was years ago with the baseball.” (The unusual part of the game involved a betting scheme gone awry.) Adam studied the law with his father and was admitted to the bar in 1897. His obituary states that he worked for the Delaware and Hudson Railroad for 30 years as a train dispatcher, clerk in the auditing department and in the legal department. We know less about Mary. Her family, the Hagadorns, was also from the Schoharie Valley. The census often reports the occupation of women as “keeping house” and that is what I imagine her doing, keeping house and raising her family. She was also active in the Slingerlands Methodist Church, the local chapter of the Red Cross (especially during World War I) and the Slingerlands Woman’s League.

The current owners of the New Scotland Road house, Jeff and Holly Andreou, along with their young children James and April, have created a warm family home in their stately Victorian. While house shopping a couple of years back, this was one place that just clicked for them. As Holly said, “It felt like home.”

The Dos and Don'ts of Winter Bus Safety With more students and snow at our bus stops here in Bethlehem, now’s a good time to go over with students, parents and drivers some winter bus-stop safety tips to ensure a safe and pleasant trip to school.
WINTER BUS SAFETY TIPS FOR STUDENTS: DOs
• Do dress in warm winter clothing: hats, mittens and boots. • Do be on time at the bus stop. • Do walk facing traffic and wear bright clothing so you are visible in times of reduced light. • Do wait for the bus several feet further off the road in a safe place in winter weather. Be mindful that some stops may still have snow piles or drifts. • Do use the handrail when boarding or exiting the bus to prevent slipping and injuring yourself on icy road surfaces or steps. • Do keep your head and arms inside the windows when riding the bus to prevent frostbite and other injuries to your limbs and face. • Do move away from the bus to a place where the driver can see you and you can see the driver after you get off the bus. • Do cross 10 feet in from of the bus, but wait for the "all clear" signal from the driver before leaving the curb. • Do keep all pagers and articles in a backpack.
DON'Ts
• Don't stand or play on snow piles at the bus stop - you could slide into the street in the path of oncoming traffic. • Don't attempt to retrieve your books or lunchbox from around or underneath the bus until after it has cleared the unloading zone. • Don't push or shove when getting on or off the bus. • Don't chase after the bus or attempt to grab the rear bumper.
WINTER BUS SAFETY TIPS FOR PARENTS & DRIVERS: DOs
• Do encourage your children to follow winter school bus safety rules. • Do keep your vehicle in good driving condition - a child's life may depend on it. • Do clear snow from the bus loading and unloading area near your home. • Do use extra caution in school zones, at bus stops and at bus loading and unloading areas where high snow banks exist. • Do keep your windshield free of ice and snow. • Do know and follow the laws of your state regarding school buses. • Do drive safely - our winter climate, with its extreme weather conditions, short daylight and dangerous roads, requires extra effort by every driver.
DON'Ts
• Don't be in a hurry. Student safety is important. • Don't try to catch the bus at another stop with your vehicle if your students miss their pick-up. Take them all the way to school. The bus driver may not see the car in back of the bus and as the students attempt to run along the side of the bus to board, they may fall underneath the wheels and be injured or killed. • Don't follow too closely behind the school bus making student stops. • Don't disregard the red flashing signals when following or facing a school bus. It is illegal - and dangerous - to pass a stopped school bus with its red lights flashing. Keep these DOs and DON'Ts in mind and we can all do our part at home and on the road to keep Bethlehem's students safe!
Bus-stop safety doesn’t end with the student, however. Parents are responsible for their children's safety before and after they are transported on the bus, including at the bus stop. Drivers should always be mindful of student unloading and loading zones, but should take extra precaution at or near schools and bus stops during winter months. 31

Q. Do I need Snow tires? A. If you live in an area where the temperature is consistently below 45 degrees you do. Snow tires are not like All-Season tires. Snow tires have special rubber compounds designed to improve traction, handling and braking in all cold weather conditions, not just ice and snow.
Q. How many Snow tires are recommended?
Kitchen & Laundry Repair Service
A. Four. Of the hundreds of questions we get every year regarding Snow tires this is the most frequently asked. The answer is the same for every vehicle type, whether you drive a compact car or SUV.
Dryer Vent Cleaning Clogged vents waste energy & can cause fires!
Q. Do I need Snow tires to improve traction if my vehicle has Traction Control?
GOOD USED APPLIANCES
A. Yes. Even though traction control optimizes the traction of your tires in adverse conditions by preventing wheel spin, this specialized system does not create additional tire traction. Traction always depends on the four contact patches created by the tires. The better traction your tires provide, the more effectively the traction control system will help you drive more safely. Cold temperatures will cause allseason compounds to harden, losing pliability and traction. See our Safety Below 45° article for more information.

Thank you for the many years of continued support!
Q. My vehicle has ABS brakes; does that eliminate the need for Snow tires?
A. No. An ABS braking system prevents “locking-up” the brakes by “pulsing” them as you apply pressure to the pedal. Remember that the tires on your vehicle supply the traction and help the ABS deliver faster stops. Tires built with better winter traction will improve overall braking performance on ice, snow, and cold roads.

and so successful. Each and every job is important, just as each and every student is important. It actually really speaks to the message of this production. As the students explore what they love and find their own strengths, they realize they have to work together to make the show the success that it is.”

Once again the Bethlehem Middle School is gearing up for their annual musical performance. Always a highlight of the school year for students, parents and the Bethlehem community alike, this year’s production of Disney’s High School Musical Junior is sure to be another crowd pleaser. Directed and Choreographed by Lindsay Dashew with Musical Director Jason Dashew and Technical Director, middle school teacher, Mary Katherine Daly, the cast of 78 actors are feverishly working on the show’s 16 musical numbers and various scene and set changes. Set in the typical All-American High School, the cast of characters are broken down into four categories: the Jocks, the Thespians, the Braniacs and the Rebels. The musical explores what happens when students don’t necessarily fit neatly into one of these categories. Can they follow their dreams? Can they have more than one label? Will their friends and family support them as they search for their own identities? This is a heartwarming story about working together to support one another’s passions and honoring the differences that make our students, our schools and our world so interesting. As always, the Bethlehem Middle School Musical is a group effort with 60 additional students serving as crew members. Students on the various crew teams will assist in every facet of the production including stage set design, lighting and sound, make-up and costumes, and props. Students will also be helping with tickets sales, as well as serving as ushers at each performance. Director, Lindsay Dashew, feels it’s very important to get the students involved at every level of the Middle School Musical, “The collaborative effort of all of the students is what makes these productions so special
