Canterbury Vet World Pet Memorial Day World Pet Memorial Day honors our pets both past and present. Held each year on the Second Sunday in June, this day was established in recognition of the important role that our beloved pets play in our lives. More than just a pet, she was your playmate and trusted confidante. She was a faithful pal. Many people want to offer a lasting tribute to such a special friend. Gestures of remembrance, large or small, provide comfort by celebrating a pet’s life and the incredible power of the bond between humans and animals. The death of an animal friend can be one of life’s most difficult experiences. Although culturally there are few traditions for paying last respects to departed companion animals, there are many meaningful ways to memorialize your beloved pet. If your pet has been cremated, scatter or bury the remains in the pet’s favorite outdoor place, or put them in a potted plant that can be taken with you should you relocate. Create a small memorial in a flower garden in your yard. Or keep your pet’s remains in a special box or an urn can be displayed in a special place of honor in your home. Some people place a small portion of the pet’s remains inside a memorial locket or have them incorporated into a piece of jewelry. Collect all the snapshots of a pet in a memory box, an album or a collage. Frame a favorite picture of the pet and display it in a special place. Give a copy as a gift to another grieving family member. Have a professional portrait of your pet painted or drawn by an artist from a favorite photograph. Have a favorite picture of the pet imprinted on a watch, mug, T-shirt or sweatshirt. Donate money or time to a charity or organization in honor of your late pet. Choose an organization or charity based on your animal’s species, breed or a particular cause that is close to your heart. Animal shelters, rescue groups and humane societies all need and appreciate volunteers. Support ongoing research regarding the illness or treatment your pet experienced.
Spend a few minutes reflecting upon pleasant memories of your pet. Think about your late pet. Look at old photos. Talk about your pet with others who were familiar with her. Reflect on all the great memories you made with your pet. Frame a photo of your pet and put it in a special place. Keep your pet’s favorite toy, collar, blanket, or bowl as a symbol of your pet. Hold a memorial service in your backyard, or in a place that was special to your animal companion. Participate in on-line memorials and candle-lighting ceremonies. Write a poem or story about your pet or write a letter to her. Contact a community park to see if you can sponsor a bench or tree affixed with an acknowledgment plaque memorializing your pet. Start a memorial fund at a local shelter in memory of your pet. When the time is right, adopt another pet from your local animal shelter or humane society. Remember, you are not alone. Grieving the loss of a friend or companion is a sign of the love that existed between you. People who don’t understand the pet/owner bond may not understand your pain. All that matters, however, is how you feel. If you need help, please contact your veterinarian for resources or contact us here at Canterbury Animal Hospital. Please send all your veterinary questions to: AskTheVet@canterburyvet.com or mail them to Ask the Vet c/o Canterbury Animal Hospital 88 Delaware Avenue Delmar, NY 12054 439-2700

Pavilion Palooza Fundraiser
Own" at the BCMS student vegetable garden! Voluntary contributions toward the event can be made at the entrance.
June 11, 11am-2pm
The Bethlehem Central Middle School Parent Teacher Organization is a group of families and educators that have come together to enrich the student experience for our children in the towns of Bethlehem and New Scotland. With this goal in mind, we are thrilled to announce our most recent endeavor: “Project Pavilion Palooza! The BCMS PTO is fundraising to construct a 48' x 36' open pavilion structure on the Middle School grounds. This space will be a wonderful resource for many years to come. Among many reasons for supporting this endeavor, it will serve as an outdoor classroom and support the district goal of promoting a healthy lifestyle by encouraging students to engage in outdoor activities. Your support will, therefore, be a meaningful and lasting investment in the community. On June 11, 2016 from 11-2, the PTO will be holding a community day event at BCMS. We will feature performances from many local groups and organizations, the chance to "dunk the principal" at a dunking booth, a bounce house, the Vertical Rush +40 Obstacle Course, and the Triple Threat Sports inflatable. It will also showcase the best of our community with local clubs and organizations offering K-8 activities and the chance to enjoy several student performances throughout the day. There will be an opportunity to "buy a ball" for the Ping Pong Ball drop with a cash prize, a silent auction, 50/50 raffle and a chance to test your sports skills with some of our local teams. There will be delicious snacks and the opportunity to "Pick Your
Please join us on June 11 to support the BCMS Project Pavilion Palooza! Direct donations and sponsorships are also encouraged and accepted before, during, and after the event. Thanks to prior community support, we are getting closer to our goal of $58,000 each day but we still need your help to donate and attend!!! Donations can be made on the day of the event or made out to BCMS PTO, 332 Kenwood Avenue, Delmar, NY 12054. You can also donate by visiting our website at www.bcmspto.org. Donations over $50 for individuals and over $100 for businesses and organizations will be acknowledged with a plaque on site. If you or your organization would like to volunteer to help at the event, you can visit our website and sign up. We need you!!! On behalf of the students, families and staff of Bethlehem Middle School, we thank you and look forward to seeing you on June 11 at the Bethlehem Middle School!

BAILEY’S GARAGE
Cooling system neglect is cited as a principal reason for mechanical failure of a vehicle. In addition to the danger and inconvenience of a breakdown, the damage to the engine and transmission can add up to thousands of dollars. Discovering a leaking radiator, hose connection, a sticking thermostat or other cooling system component that’s on “borrowed time” can save the life of one’s engine. To underscore the importance of proper care of the cooling system, the Council offers this multiple- choice quiz:
Cooling system quiz 1. For maximum freeze protection antifreeze mixture should be: a. half anti-freeze and half water; b. pure antifreeze; c. 70% anti-freeze, 30% water. 2. In the cooling system the thermostat: a. controls engine temperature; b. works the air conditioner; c modulates the diodes. 3. A radiator cap is designed to: a. keep water from sloshing out of the radiator; b. keep the cooling system operating at a specified pressure; c. last indefinitely. 4. A broken drive belt can cause: a. overheating; b. loss of power steering; c. dead battery. 5. Cooling systems on many cars today: a. have no water pump; b. never need to be flushed; c. are equipped with an electric fan on the radiator. Answers to Cooling System Quiz: 1. (C) is correct, although a 50/50 solution is adequate for most climates, protecting to -34o F. Never use pure antifreeze. 2. (A) is correct. As stated above, a faulty thermostat, causing an engine to run too hot or too cold, can damage the engine. 3. (B) is correct. And when replacing the cap, be sure to install the right one for your vehicle. Pressure recommendations vary. 4. Because all three functions are dependent upon the drive belt (or belts) all three answers are correct. 5. (C) is correct.

FINANCIAL FOCU$
Identity theft Identity theft is a big problem. How big? Consider this: In 2015, about 13 million Americans were victimized, with a total fraud amount of $15 billion, according to Javelin Strategy & Research. That’s a lot of victims, and a lot of money. How can you protect yourself from becoming a statistic? Here are a few suggestions: •Secure your Social Security number. Identity thieves eagerly seek Social Security numbers — so don’t give out yours to anyone who asks for it. In fact, as a general rule, be reluctant to give it out at all. Always ask whomever you’re dealing with if he or she will accept another form of identification, or at the very least will take just the last four digits of your number. And never carry your Social Security card with you. •Shred credit card offers and bank statements. If you’re not going to apply for the credit cards offered to you, shred the offers. Identity thieves have been known to go through garbage, fill out credit card offers and take advantage of them. At the same time, shred your bank and brokerage statements – and any other statement containing personal or financial information. •Study your credit card bills and checking account statements. Question any credit card charge or checking account activity you don’t recognize as your own.
with Jerry Pittz
information will be protected. Never give out your credit card number to people or businesses who, unsolicited, try to sell you something over the phone or Internet. •Protect your passwords. Do you use a password to log onto your computer? If so, don’t share it with anyone, outside perhaps your most trusted family members. And use a strong password – one that doesn’t contain your real name or even a complete word that could be used to identify you. Also, it doesn’t hurt to periodically change your password, whether it’s for your computer logon or for entry to any of your financial or consumer accounts. Even after taking these steps, you could still run into identity theft. That’s why you need to watch for certain signs, such as the arrival of unexpected credit cards or account statements, denials of credit for no clear reason, or calls or letters regarding purchases you didn’t make. If any of these things happen to you, you may want to place a “fraud alert” on your credit reports and review them carefully. Three national credit-reporting companies – Equifax, Experian and TransUnion – keep records of your credit history. If someone has misused your personal or financial information, contact one of the companies and ask for an initial fraud alert on your credit report. A fraud alert is free, but you must provide proof of your identity. And the company you call must tell the other companies about your alert. (For more information on placing a fraud alert, visit the website of any of the three companies.) You can help preserve your good name from those who want to misuse it – so, stay vigilant.

•Don’t give out your credit card number unless you’re initiating a purchase. Many of us shop online. As long as you’re dealing with a reputable merchant who uses a secure site — i.e., one that has “https” in the web address — you should be fairly confident that your credit card

Bethlehem’s
Town Hall By Susan E. Leath
What is a town hall? A place to conduct the business of the town, hold meetings and public gatherings. A place to store the voluminous records of the town. Such a place seems to have always been with us. Yet, for most of Bethlehem’s history, we didn’t have a permanent town hall building. Starting at the very beginning in 1794, town business was conducted in any number of locations, usually a local inn. Our first town meeting was held April 10, 1794 “at the house of Henry Burhans, Innholder.” In 1829, the town clerk noted in the minutes that the next town meeting would be held at the house of Peter J. Houck. In 1831, the clerks began using the phrase “For Town House” followed by the person’s name. For example, in 1832 it is Daniel Winne and in 1833 it was Joshua Babcock. This continued for the next 70 years
An excerpt from the town clerk’s minute books dated March 5, 1834. Note the “For Town House” near the bottom.
J. Robert Hendrick and Thomas V. Corrigan pose in front of the new Bethlehem Town Hall during the open house on May 4, 1980. Hendrick (left) was supervisor from 1985-1989. Corrigan (right) served from 1978-1984.
or so with some individuals retaining the Town House for several years running. 1893 is an interesting year to use as an example. The duly recorded Town House was that of William J. Wemple, however in January the town board met at the house of Henry Parr. Later that year in April the meeting was simply at the Town House – one assumes William Wemple’s. In May the town board met at the Bethlehem Center Hotel, in June at the Pearl Street Hotel and later that month at the hotel of Chas Smith in Normansville. July saw them back at the Bethlehem Center Hotel followed by another meeting where the location is the “bridge near the Jagger Stone Quarry.” This meeting schedule also points to changes in town government and the minutes kept by the town clerk. In the early years, say the late 1700s to early 1800s, the clerk recorded the results of the annual town meeting where the supervisor, town clerk, over seers of the highways and other officials (like justices, constables, fence viewers and pound masters) were elected. They also recorded the few ordinances enacted (usually regarding funds to be raised and animals to be kept under control.) Beginning in the 1860s, and as demonstrated above in 1893, the town board became more active as life in our little town became more complicated. The town clerks went from recording the single annual town meeting to recording the many town board meetings. 1899 was the year when the annual town meeting held in the spring for the election of officers was folded into the November general elections. The town clerk notes that while there was no town meeting in May, the board still appointed an official Town House, which was the Abbey Hotel in Glenmont. This is the last Town House listed. For the next 50 years, the majority of Bethlehem town board meetings are held at the Offices of the Town Clerk, be it George T. Coughtry’s office in Slingerlands 27
Bethlehem’s Town Hall at 393 Delaware Avenue is decorated for the holidays in this circa 1980 photo. In an article published by the Spotlight in 1978 that discusses the possible move of town hall from here to the elementary school, the writer sums up with a nice turn of phrase. “Previously [to the location on Kenwood Avenue], the town government was headquartered in the residences of the supervisor and town clerk, who were said to “carry the town government in their hats.”
in the 19-teens or the office Edward W. Boutelle in the 1930s. In 1940, town clerk Robert F. Westervelt informed the town board he was moving his offices to 388 Kenwood Avenue in Delmar. The town board agreed that the town would pay the monthly rent of $35. The Tri-Village Directory reflects this change. In 1939 it simply lists town officers, with no location. In 1940, the directory lists town officers noting that Town Clerk Westervelt’s office is at 388 Kenwood Avenue (it also lists his residence at 91 Darroch Road.) This rented suite of offices at Kenwood Avenue become our first Town Hall. The building is still standing. Some remember the days when Ehrlich's Auto Parts Store occupied the building. You also might be curious to know that the directory does not list a phone number for the town until 1943.
The Delmar Public School is seen here in 1977 just before it was purchased by the town. Supervisor Thomas V. Corrigan in his remarks during the May 1980 open house wrote: “When the Bethlehem School District closed the Delmar Elementary School and offered it for sale, we knew we had the perfect solution to our office space needs. The price - $65,000, was a bargain. Our Capital Reserve Fund for Buildings could be used for the purchase and it would cover the cost of renovations too…. The building is all “Paid For!” and we’re very proud of it!”
As early as 1932, the town board was approached by the Delmar Fire Company to purchase their fire hall for a town hall. The fire hall was the old Adams House Hotel at 393 Delaware Avenue (which, by the way, was built by Nathaniel Adams and town meetings were held there in the 1840s.) This idea finally came to fruition in 1950 when a special election approved the purchase of the building for use as Town Hall. The seat of Bethlehem’s government remained there for 30 years. By the late 1970s, space was growing tight in the former hotel and fire hall. About the same time, the Delmar Grade School became available. In 1978, the town of Bethlehem purchased the school building from the Bethlehem Central School District, renovated it extensively and held a grand opening on May 4, 1980. Susan E. Leath presently serves as Bethlehem’s Town Historian. She is the author of Historic Tales of Bethlehem, New York. The book is
available for sale at the Town Clerk’s office at Town Hall, I Love Books in Delmar, Tattered Pages in Glenmont, and many other retailers including online. Visit her blog at: BethlehemNYHistory.blogspot.com. Susan welcomes your suggestions for future Then and Now articles. OH THE PLACES YOU’LL GO AT Y SUMMER CAMP….
WITH APOLOGIES TO DR. SEUSS Camels and buffalo and bears, oh wow. Giraffes and monkeys and zebras and how. Those are just some things you will eye when you go to summer camp at the Bethlehem Y. Water slides, cruises, a trip to the lake, the kids at the Y say our camp is great. Mini-golf, parks, a big mountain hike, at YMCA summer camp there’s so much to like. A summer with fun, a summer with friends, at Y summer camp, the fun never ends. So go tell your mom and say to your dad, you want the best camp around to be had. If you want a great summer with smiles every day, please sign up for camp at the YMCA. The exotic animals at Adirondack Animal Land are just one of the many great field trip adventures planned for kids that attend summer camp at the Bethlehem YMCA this year. We are also going to Great Escape, Prospect Mountain, Water Slide World, High Adventure at Howe Caverns, a JP Morgan Cruise, Grafton Lake State Park, and more. The field trips, combined with our terrific camp staff and daily activities of fun, games, crafts, swimming, and play make for the best summer camp around. It is also a great value and very accommodating for working parents. Summer vacation from school starts in a couple of weeks and there are still camp slots open, so either go online at cdymca.org or stop by the Bethlehem YMCA to sign your kids up for a great, fun summer. 20/20 REFERRAL PROGRAM FOR Y SAVINGS When it comes to spreading the word about all the YMCA has to offer its members, we aren’t flashy. We don’t bombard people with constant advertising. We aren’t loud. Nothing is huuuuge. However, the Y is a great value because it offers a wide range of programs, classes and facilities designed to meet everyone of every age and physical capabilities. We are a community center and a non-profit organization that helps thousands of people in need every year. We do cater to friends and family and we are the real thing. Now, the Capital District YMCA is offering an extra special value for our members – our 20/20 referral
program. When you refer a friend who joins the Y, you and your friend save 20 percent on your memberships for as long as you are both members. This offer began on May 1st and replaced the previous offer of a free month for every referral. Working out with a friend has many benefits – motivation, competition, accountability, more fun and better results, to name just a few. So now you can bring a friend to the Bethlehem Y, get them signed up and both can save money. Y PRE AND AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAMS REGISTERING FOR NEXT FALL Many parents are already signing their toddlers up for fall 2016 pre-school at the Bethlehem YMCA. At Y-Time, children learn core values and positive behaviors, and can explore their unique talents and interests, helping them realize their potential. We nurture their development by providing a safe place to learn foundational skills, develop healthy, trusting relationships and build selfreliance through the Y values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility. That makes for confident kids today and contributing and engaged adults tomorrow. The YMCA is the largest child care provider in the Capital District and we offer the following pre-school opportunities: > Toddler Class: Tuesday and Thursday from 9:30-11:00 a.m.; Designed for toddlers and early 3’s that are new to a group setting, children will sing, dance, experience art and learn through play. > Preschool Class: Monday, Wednesday and Friday; 9:0011:30 a.m. Designed for 3’s and early 4’s, children will build social and cognitive skills through classroom activities and play. > Pre-Kindergarten Class: Monday through Friday; 12 Noon -3:00 p.m. Designed for children preparing to enter kindergarten the following school year, children will develop essential pre-math, literacy and reasoning skills to get ready for kindergarten. > Y-Time before and after school enrichment care for children grades K-8th: Monday through Friday 7:00 - 9:00 a.m. and from school dismissal until 6:00 p.m. Please contact Katie Eagan at the Bethlehem YMCA if you have any questions.

Trish Pix Tattered Pages Used Books
My dear constant readers, I recently posted a poster on Facebook that said, “Each time you read a book, a tree smiles knowing there is life after death!” That once living tree, now processed into paper, has ink lovingly imprinted upon it, and, what once lived only in the author’s mind now lives eternally within the pages of a book! Kind of makes you want to respect books just a wee bit more, doesn’t it. While teaching, I always did a lesson on the life of a book incorporating the tree into that process. I explained that pure thought is like matter in a gaseous state, you can’t see it until it is transformed. I bring in the history of “writing” from cuneiform, to quill ink pen & papyrus, to moveable print (thank you Guttenberg)… to now “mass-communicating”. I have had students create/ publish their own hardcover book complete with index, table of contents, dedication & illustrations. I would explain about “book etiquette” with how you turn a page, use a bookmark (no, no, no, never, ever dog ear a page or break the spine to keep it open!). I even shared a waterdowned version of the plot line behind “Fahrenheit 451” and how each rebel “became” a book memorizing every precious word of that outlawed book. If you didn’t know, Bradbury’s futuristic sci-fi novel is so named in reference to the temperature at which paper burns. A great novel with a wonderful book storyline is “The Book Thief” by Markus Zuzak. I love this book and all of its incredible levels, settings and plot lines. At the center is “the book” as if it is a character as alive & thriving as any character in this intense story set in WWII Germany. Many have categorized it as YA (young adult) and it is definitely for the young adult in all of us…no matter the age. This is one of those books that appeals to readers for so many reasons. You truly bring your own life experience into this one…but the love of the written word, the atrocity of book burnings, the love of the story and reading…it is as much a love story of that as anything. There was a time when owning books was a life goal, even a hobby. Immigrants would pack books among their treasures. Simply put, they were treasures. Often milestones of one’s life, books connect us to our past, to ourselves, our dreams & aspirations, they may also connect us to a specific time in our life that we can relive the instant we hear the title or “actually hold the book in our hands”. For input/knowledge, instant gratification, the e-book has its purpose, but it cannot replace that sensory relationship with the written word. The other day I had a conversation with a customer about the “author’s voice” in any given piece. We had come to agree that a particular author had spoiled us for others in that particular genre of sci-fi/urban fantasy. Karen Marie Moning is a phenomenal author of this popular genre. We both took a moment to describe how we saw the kitchen inside the defunct church where much of the action in each book takes place. It is not described in any of the books, but in bits and pieces, 40
and yet, we both agreed on each other’s overall design & layout! That’s how vivid her writing is. A well written book exercises our senses & our imagination. The adventure can be what we invest in it. How incredible is that? The most economical adventure/get-away can be found in books! Here at Tattered Pages the books are shelved in genres and all books are in my data base. Don’t let the name of the shop confuse you! Most of the books in the shop are in gift-giving condition and many are quite new. I do not buy books nor take large boxes of books, ever! I do offer an opportunity for readers to responsibly recycle a few books at a time into my inventory, and in return they receive computer credits that will deduct 20% more off the price of future purchases. I do sell gift certificates to the store. I do carry about 50 DVDs and a few audio books on cd. All books are priced on the back, reduced between 20-60% off the original publisher’s price. Anything brought in for credit consideration should be clean, dusted and odor-free…up to 6 books adult…up to 12 children books & 12 DVDs. We will be celebrating our 9th Anniversary in this location in mid-June! During the month of June all military novels & history books are an additional 10% off the already reduced price. Teachers always receive an additional 10% off all purchases, just remind Trish at the checkout. I accept credit/debit cards, personal instate check, as well as cash. For those who love historical fiction & mystery, I highly recommend “The Alienist” by Caleb Carr. The first recorded serial killer, set in NYC when Teddy Roosevelt was the police commissioner and fingerprints were first used as evidence. Utilizing one of the first female police detectives, a socialite newspaperman, and an “alienist” which was the term given to a psychiatrist of the insane, this is a must for murder mystery purists. I also enjoyed, “The Inferno” by Dan Brown, which I just saw was coming out as a movie in the near future with Tom Hanks returning as Robert Langdon. I already have the “picture” set in my mind…I guess I will have to wait and see how it translates to the big screen. I am currently reading Justin Cronin’s first book in a trilogy, “The Passage”. Nothing says summer to me like a futuristic, Apocolyptic Dystopian fiction piece! But then… my shop is a no-judgment zone. Check out my Facebook page: Tattered Pages, LLC or my website: www.tatteredpages365.webs.com. You can always contact me that way & I will do the browsing for you. Summer hours are in effect from June-Labor Day. See below for the adjusted hours. Until next month…you can find the beginning of that next adventure, right here in my shop…and…if you would, please….tell a friend! Trish & Seamus Patricia Eldridge is the owner of Tattered Pages New & Used Books in the Glenmont Center Square at 365 Feura Bush Rd. #447-9910 Summer Hours: M,T,W: 10-5, Th. 10-4, Fri. 10-7, Sat. 10-2

Community Fund neighbors helping neighbors since 1942
In 1942, the Bethlehem Community White Christmas Festival Fund began as several nights of community group performances. Donations collected were used to extend the spirit of community to our less fortunate town residents throughout the entire year. This spirit was so strong that the activities of the Festival continues today as the Bethlehem Community Fund. Today, the Bethlehem Community Fund provides financial assistance for emergency needs for residents of the Town of Bethlehem and students of Bethlehem Central School District, when such needs are not covered by other agencies/ sources. These matters are treated with confidentiality.
Please consider helping your neighbor with a donation. Donate online at:
