THE PLACE Potenza, Italy Potenza in Basilicata spreads across a high ridge 819 metres above sea level making it the highest regional capital in Italy. For this reason the weather often appears uninviting – at least when we’ve passed through – but this summer we finally stopped to have a look around. Instead Potenza is a place to relax and enjoy a slice of authentic south Italian living. With the city center situated at the top of a steep hill, escalators provide a form of public transport in Potenza. The largest, Santa Lucia Escalator (Italian: Scale Mobili Santa Lucia), is approximately 500 m (1,600 ft) long and connects Potenza's historic center with a residential neighborhood to the west by descending 100 m (330 ft) into a valley. Potenza's public escalator network is the largest in Europe and the second-largest in the world after Tokyo.
