Greetings Gryphon football fans! In addition to being the mayor of Guelph, I am a longtime and loyal fan of Guelph Gryphons football. I have always been impressed by the skill, determination, and teamwork the Gryphons display on the field. I’ve also been impressed by the character and community involvement players demonstrate off the field. Gryphons give back to our community, volunteering their time and talent to help make Guelph a better place. I have attended many Gryphons football games at Alumni Stadium with my family, and the atmosphere and vibe there is second to none. I am looking forward to another fantastic season in 2017-2018. All the best for a great season! Go Gryphons! Sincerely,
Cam Guthrie Mayor

in the country. The support for our Gryphon football program continues to grow larger each year. Whether it be the student body here on campus, or the greater Guelph community as a whole, the enthusiasm and passion for university football in this city is evident. With five straight trips to the playoffs, including a conference championship in 2015, the Gryphon football team has certainly earned the title of a perennial power in the OUA.

With success comes expectation. The Guelph Gryphons football team has been to the post-season for five consecutive years, including a dream run to the fourth Yates Cup victory in school history. So, the 2017 squad is hungry to keep that playoff streak alive and Coach Kevin MacNeill will lean on a talented and experienced roster to do battle with its OUA foes. With a mix of veteran players, strong recruits, and top-class facilities, this emerging program can look forward to a bright future, set in the most desirable environment in Canadian university football.
OFFENCE: What’s old is new again. The adage perfectly sums up the Gryphons’ offence heading into the 2017 OUA season. The imposing trio of quarterback James Roberts, running back Johnny Augustine and receiver Jacob Scarfone, all prominent members of the 2015 Yates Cup championship team, will be reunited. Roberts, a fourth year Cambridge, ON native, ranks fifth on the Gryphons’ all-time passing list (4,711 yards) and the talented QB gets his favourite weapon back with the return of Scarfone. The receiver missed all of the 2016 with a serious knee injury but Scarfone gained invaluable experience in recent months competing on the Hamilton Tiger-Cats practice roster after the team drafted the London, ON native 47th overall in the last CFL Draft. Scarfone racked up a school record 942 yards in the 2015 regular season and was on the receiving end of 10 touchdown passes from Roberts. Augustine will play his fifth and final season for the Gryphons after taking part in the Edmonton Eskimos’ training camp this past spring. The powerful running back enters 2017 ranked fourth on Guelph’s all-time rushing list with 2,052 yards on the ground, and 19 touchdowns. But Augustine isn’t the only weapon in what will be a deep backfield. Brandon Gordon (fifth year) and Jamal Hooker (third year) are all expected to earn meaningful touches. And when they get those opportunities, they will run behind an imposing offensive line anchored by twotime OUA All-Star Andrew Pickett and the very athletic Jaylan Guthrie, who many people believe will play professional football either in Canada or south of the border when his Gryphon days are done.
DEFENCE:
Strong defensive play has been a hallmark of recent Gryphon teams and the 2017 edition of the corps will make moving the ball a difficult proposition for OUA offences. The linebackers are the backbone of this unit, led by Lynden, ON native Luke Korol (fourth year) and Derek Drouillard (fifth year) from London. The two captains have made a lasting impression on the Gryphon defence. Korol was all over the field in 2016, registering eight tackles per game, which ranked second in the conference. Drouillard showed his athleticism by making the jump from the defensive line to linebacker, where he made many big plays in his seven regular season games last year, including three sacks and an interception. The secondary is in good shape with the return of former All-Canadian and Guelph native Nick Parisotto (fourth year) and converted free safety Royce Metchie (fourth year). Both were invited to the East-West Bowl in Quebec City last May.
SPECIAL FORCES: This prominent unit welcomes back two key pieces for the 2017 season. In Gabriel Ferraro (fourth year) and Job Reinhart (third year), the Gryphons have two reliable performers that are among the best at their positions in U SPORTS football. Ferraro has become clutch kicker/punter in his Guelph career and his performance in the EastWest Bowl was indicative of how the Mississauga, ON native can rise to the occasion. Among the best U SPORTS players in the country, Ferraro was a perfect 2-for-2 in field goals (the longest from 42 yards) and 4-for-4 in extra points in the West’s dominant 37-13 win. Reinhart had a standout season on the Special Forces unit and was relied on to do many things, including long snapping duties. The local product was Guelph’s only representative on the OUA All-Star First Team, earning his spot with impressive play at the Rush Cover position.

Being a Gryphon means respecting those around you; it means asking others what they want from a relationship (any relationship), and respecting those boundaries. It means stopping to ask a partner if they are okay with a kiss, with a sexual activity, or even a hug goodnight.

FOOTBALL PAVILION The University of Guelph football team has had its fair share of difference makers enter the program in recent years. Momentum has certainly been gathering as the Gryphons step towards elite status. But the task of recruiting the best student athletes from around this country will be considerably easier in the future with the completion of Alumni Stadium’s new Pavilion, a jewel among the stunning infrastructure redesign on campus.
“We’ve always been able to engage recruits when talking about our rich history and the tremendous academic opportunities here,” Head Coach Kevin MacNeill said when groundbreaking for the Pavilion began in 2016. “But when you couple that with the state-of-the-art facilities, U of G truly becomes a top destination for young men looking to play football at the U SPORTS level.”
“Our vision has always been to create a program that can sustain success for years to come,” - Stu Lang
The beautiful two-floor facility, funded by Stu and Kim Lang’s Angel Gabriel Foundation, is a massive beacon for the supporters of Gryphon football. Situated just off College Ave in the northwest corner of Alumni Stadium, the completed Pavilion will be like no other building in Canadian university football. The spacious 3,300-square foot locker room (with a sauna) on the ground floor is complemented by an athletic therapy clinic complete
with hydrotherapy pools, as well as new meeting rooms where players, coaches and team staff can gather for film sessions. There is a new equipment room, and a lounge for players, with full kitchen and TVs, where they can study or simply relax. Gamedays will be unique, when the rooftop will open as a viewing area for Alumni and Friends of Gryphon Football. But the investment made to give Alumni Stadium a bold new look is for much more than simple aesthetics and comfort. The Pavilion also represents the University of Guelph’s future potential, with a promise that the institution and Gryphon Football will make more history. “Our vision has always been to create a program that can sustain success for years to come,” Stu Lang said in 2016. “We want to continue to build a program in which we strive for excellence in everything we do.” The presence of the new Pavilion will act as a constant reminder of Stu Lang’s thoughtful words. Each player who goes through the Gryphon Football program will be able to say that they competed on their very own field of dreams.

crucial part of their daily mantra. For incoming recruits, this is made clear – playing football for the Guelph Gryphons comes with high expectations.

With all of the new facilities, the academic support and the citizenship opportunities, especially for higher level athletes, this is one of the most elite environments you can possibly be at in the country.” Galloway is proud that there is honesty and integrity in the way the Guelph football staff and the group of scouts approach the task of recruiting. For one, they do not over recruit. Potential players also get a clear picture of what will be required of them, as well as the many tools at their disposal designed to make the challenges of both the academic and athletic year easier. The perks are many – and these unique offerings have helped Guelph Gryphons football stay ahead of the curve on the recruiting front. But players are expected to hold up their end so that when they leave Guelph, they have transformed from young athletes to productive men. “The first thing we always tell people is that this is not an easy program to play for,” Galloway says. “This is not a program for kids who like football. It’s a program for kids who want to go pro. “We say that but our ultimate goal is really to make sure they leave here a better person. They have to be ready to go out and be successful in the real world, ready to be good fathers, good role models in their community.”

ATHLETIC THERAPY
Football players at the University of Guelph have access to top-notch Athletic Therapy services as well as state-ofthe-art facilities. Led by Head Athletic Therapist, Teresa Budwal, the Gryphons’ team of athletic therapists focus on providing comprehensive assessment and treatment of musculoskeletal conditions and sport-related injuries. During the rehabilitation process, Gryphon football players will work with Teresa and her team of studenttrainers to develop therapeutic exercise programs to optimize mobility and strength, while also providing education on the management and prevention of injuries. Student-trainers are selected from a pool of candidates pursuing post-secondary degrees in Kinesiology and Athletic Therapy. All student-trainers undergo thorough screening during the interview process to ensure the highest level of professionalism. As part of the newly constructed football pavilion at Alumni Stadium, Gryphon football players will have access to a brand new athletic therapy clinic, opening in the summer of 2017. This new treatment and rehabilitation facility features an anti-gravity treadmill, two in-ground hot and cold hydrotherapy pools, as well as cardio, resistance and functional exercise equipment. Team physician Dr. Patti Galvin is a dedicated resource for the football team year-round and is part of a comprehensive approach at the University of Guelph that ensures all levels of the student-athlete’s well-being are accounted for, including daily access to on-campus healthcare providers specializing in massage therapy, physiotherapy, as well as chiropractic care. TERESA BUDWAL HEAD ATHLETIC THERAPIST Head Athletic Therapist Teresa Budwal arrived at the University of Guelph in August of 2014. Prior to her time at U of G, Teresa spent 10 seasons as the Head Athletic Therapist with the Laurier Golden Hawks football team. GRYPHON FOOTBALl Any athlete who competes wants to get better at what they do. For the hundreds of kids who visit the Gryphon Football camps each year, improvement is a given. Young football players whose goal is to play at the U SPORTS level and beyond have embraced this unique and challenging learning environment. But so have players who maybe just want to catch a few more balls in their fun flag football league – Gryphon Football camps are for everyone. Boys and girls are led by current University of Guelph team members, while older athletes who attend the elite camps, get to pick the brains of past and present CFL players.
ELITE CAMPS Gryphon stars like James Roberts, Jacob Scarfone, Nick Parisotto, and Orion Edwards offer a lot of star power for young campers. But learning skills from Damon Allen, the combined passing and rushing leader in all of professional football (84,301 yards), is another level. Damon Allen headlined an impressive list of guest coaches at the 2017 Elite Skills Camp, which included current CFL’er Alex Charette from the Montreal Alouettes. “He’s an absolute legend, the best to ever play in the CFL,” James Roberts said of Allen. “Someone like that, to be here for these kids and to learn from, to see what goes on in his mind and how he sees the game is just an absolute incredible opportunity.” The Elite O-Line D-Line Camp, led by Guelph’s respective line coaches Mike MacDonald and Brian Cluff, welcomed recently retired CFL’er Jake Piotrowski, as well as current CFL’ers Jeff Finley, Ryan Bomben, and Cam Thorn. And the Specialist Camp, run by Coach Bill Brown, featured several former Gryphons who went on

to the professional ranks, including Rob Maver, Curtis Newton, Jake Reinhart and Cam Walker. “The Specialist Camp is unique,” said Coach Brown. “There aren’t too many of these camps around. Unfortunately, a lot of these kids in high school may not get the coaching that they need in kicking, long snapping or even the returning perspective. We thought that we would provide that so high schools in the area benefit from the skill sets that are being taught here at the University of Guelph.”
FLAG FOOTBALL CAMPS Guelph’s flag football camps offer kids aged 7-13 a great chance to learn some skills in a fun, friendly, non-contact environment. Current Gryphon players lead the way in helping these campers get better and learn, but also develop a deeper passion for the game itself. “The camp is a great introduction to football,” said former Gryphon player and current assistant offensive coach/football operations manager Matt Nesbitt. “The younger campers do high-energy, games that incorporate basic football skills. There are no rules and they’re not being taught scheme. It’s a lot of fun for them.” The older kids go into greater depth. Many are flag football regulars, who learn important skills and scheme work that they can implement in real games. Many begin the flag football camps early in life, continue to participate annually, and often join Guelph Minor Football. “Kids really start to love the game,” said Nesbitt. SPRING CAMP
Gryphon Football is headed south in 2018. The University of Guelph football program will have the rare opportunity to attend the world-renowned IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida next February, where they will undoubtedly adhere to the facility’s slogan: Train Here. Leave Better. The Gryphons are scheduled to bus down to Bradenton during Reading Week to hold their spring camp in an extremely unique setting.
“The vision is to always want to get better,” said Assistant Head Coach Todd Galloway. “We tried to think of the most elite environment possible where we could do that.” The plan is to make the trip south once every four years so that each member of the program can take part. The Gryphons visited Apopka, Florida in 2014, where they stayed locally and trained at the Apopka Athletic Complex. The bonding and subsequent benefit on game days was obvious that year. “We came back and were able to execute at a high level throughout the season on the way to making a trip to the Yates Cup,” said Galloway. “The guys were so close and willing to go to war with each other.” The IMG experience promises to be even better. The Gryphons will be in amazing company given some of the collegiate and professional programs that have trained at the impeccable 500-acre academy. NFL franchises that have made the trip to Bradenton include the Arizona Cardinals, Oakland (Las Vegas) Raiders and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Blue chip NCAA programs like the Alabama Crimson Tide and Michigan Wolverines have trained there, as have the Premiership soccer side Tottenham Hotspur and legendary rugby team the New Zealand All Blacks. These organizations have been treated to IMG’s perfect environment and ideal weather, all of which enables participating athletes to stay sharp and elevate their games both individually and as a team.

Friends of Gryphon Football The evolution of Gryphon Football has put the spotlight on a proud program. Supporters want to be a part of it – and keep that momentum moving forward. Friends of Gryphon Football was established about a decade ago to do just that. The organization, which is an extension of the original 25th Man Club created by former Gryphon Pat Tracey in the mid 1990s, exists so that alumni and friends can help promote and support the football team’s annual quest to compete for the OUA and U SPORTS hardware. “Friends of Gryphon Football has become an excellent vehicle for alumni and friends to keep a real connection with the program,” says Director of Football Development and Special Forces Coordinator Bill Brown, who was a member of the 1996 Yates Cup champion Gryphons. “It is one of the ways to ensure that the program will remain intact.” FOGF, working alongside the University of Guelph and the Department of Athletics, has a variety of objectives among its active and enthusiastic membership. The first is to raise funds to improve and promote the program. One of the most significant advancements to come from the club was the creation of the Gryphon Football Gala in early May, which raises approximately $30,000 to $40,000 annually for the program. Guests are eager to take part and see notable speakers like University of Guelph alum Thomas Dimitroff, the General Manager of the NFL’s Atlanta Falcons, who was a keynote speaker at the inaugural edition of the gala. Friends of Gryphon Football allows this family of supporters to stay connected. Events like the annual golf tournament encourage interaction among the current players, alumni, parents, students, the University of Guelph administration and the local community, all of whom have are heavily invested in seeing every Gryphon achieve personal and team success.
ParentsTHANKofYOU!Players It’s hard enough for most parents to send a child off to university. When that individual is a football player at an elite OUA program, who will be put to the test both physically and mentally, the concern can be even greater. But the Moms and Dads of Gryphon Football players have a security blanket. The Parents of Players group is an essential tool for the families, friends, alumni and community members who are closely following these young men on their football journey at the University of Guelph. “We’ve created a culture of support,” says Bruna Ferraro, current POP President and mother of Gryphon kicker Gabriel Ferraro. “All parents are nervous when their kids go away to school. There’s separation anxiety. And when they play varsity sports, the jump from high school to university is so big. We want to provide some relief and comfort for parents.” Stu Lang had a vision for this group, and Ferraro, continuing the work of original president Sharanne MacDonald, has run with it. Regular emails go out to over 400 people, keeping everyone on top of Gryphon Football news. Once the season begins, POP members meet in the parking lot for pre-game events, where they share stories and food before their loved ones hit the field. The impact POP has had on families and friends is obvious.
“POP has done a fantastic job keeping us informed about all aspects of the team,” said Tracy Drouillard, mother of returning player and 2017 captain Derek Drouillard. “They provide a line of communication that allows us to truly feel a part of the Gryphon family. POP brings together parents, friends, and alumni, allowing us to connect through our mutual bond that is Gryphon football. This is a special group of wonderful people and we are grateful for all that they do.” Ferraro is proud of POP’s impact.
“You can see how parents grow from having a desire to follow their own child to developing a love of the program as a whole,” she says.

ADOPT-A-GRYPHON The life of a student-athlete can be chaotic at the best of times. The commitment to play a varsity sport and maintain an academic standard leaves little time for much else. It wasn’t too long ago that Gryphon athletes would help raise funds by going door-todoor with a form in hand, desperately hoping for a contribution that would help their Guelph team in some small way. But the Adopt-A-Gryphon program, which began in the mid 2000’s, is changing the way University of Guelph athletes garner
